Teaching did not stop in the classroom as she taught learn to swim at the Jordan Memorial Pool for many years, taught Sunday school at Jordan United Methodist Church, coached science Olympiad teams for her daughter and grandchildren and co-led the Jordan Girl Scout troop.

In her free time Mary Ann enjoyed music of all kinds but especially that of the Syracuse Symphoria, nature (Baltimore

woods), swimming, gardening and her hobby farm with a menagerie of animals who all had names (sheep, horses, pigs, cows, ducks, dogs, cats and a donkey). In lieu of flowers the family asks that people consider donations in her name to one or two of her favorite volunteer passions: the Jordan Memorial Pool (Veterans Memorial Pool, P.O. Box 561, Jordan, NY 13080) and the Baltimore Woods Nature Center (baltimorewoods.org 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus, NY 13108-0133). Mary Ann chose to donate her body to Mary Ann Baner Upstate Medical Center and will continue to teach even in death. Memorial Day

Memorial Day is usually a festive time in many communities.

Usually seen as an unofficial start to summer, many gather for parades and to listen to guest speakers and host parties and cookouts.

In recent years these celebrations have been disrupted due to concerns associated with COVID-19.

But as Memorial Day approaches many of the traditional celebrations are preparing to honor and celebrate the day and the people it recognizes with many of traditional activities we have come to anticipate.

While it is great to gather with friends and family and celebrate the day, Memorial Day and its true meaning are something well worth remembering and well worth putting a greater focus on and sharing with friends and family as we prepare to honor this special day.

The parades, the gatherings, the cookouts, the long weekend are all things we can share in and enjoy, but taking the time to consider the tradition, the history and the countless people this day represents is incredibly important.

While the short answer is that Memorial Day is about honoring those who gave their lives serving their country, there is a great deal of history behind this day and it is a day that reminds us that remembering those who served deserve our respect regardless of the date.

Memorial Day goes back to what was known as Decoration Day starting in 1868 following the Civil War.

The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May.

While this move created the three day weekend so many have come to associate with Memorial Day, locally many organizations from municipal governments to VFWs have worked to maintain a sense of the true meaning behind the day.

There will be ceremonies honoring those who served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice as wreaths will be laid at memorials. There will be guest speakers who will share their experiences and insights as veterans, people who have served and people who understand the sacrifice others made and there will be time to reflect on what this means and how much those who served and sacrificed have meant to this country.

We hope that everyone, whether they are attending a community celebration or hosting their own private gathering with friends and family, will keep the true meaning of Memorial Day in mind in their own way. Whether it is with a moment of reflection or silence or sharing stories of loved ones who served and sacrificed, this is a day for honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

GeTTiNGOuT, FiNAlly

A soft breeze slid in through my office window. Spring was here and I was still inside. The outside and all its wonders is waiting for me to unbundle my COVID19 adaptive isolation and enjoy the sweet benefits of just being outside.

My garden awaits my ministrations. Left without supervision, it has developed a rather ragged appearance with garlic mustard, celandine, dandelions, black walnut and maple seedlings advancing on the hapless herbs and perennials. There is so much to do.

There is also my village, with its homes, churches and shops, waiting for a wander and, perchance, a meeting with an old friend or the possible beginning of a new friendship.

And there is Baltimore Woods, with its meandering trails, endless inspiration from woodland, wild flowers and brooks. I can once again explore the delightful Marcellus park where I have walked the trails many times.

I have to move out, untangle the comfortable hold of isolation and experience the loveliness of the natural world that nourishes us with its quiet, its sweet air, its memories of ancient times.

St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, taught the

world that all the Ramblings earth’s creatures from the were part of God’s empty nest creation, each Ann Ferro part of the larger whole, part of a plan that linked all in a concert of life. The earth shimmered with purposeful life. He was focusing on the natural world, not the world that the wealth of his family offered, but the dirt and the stones and trees and the creatures that lived there. A bit more challenging is the idea that the whole earth has a resonance, linked to the rhythms of our bodies. Think of biorhythms, monthly cycles, seasonal affective disorder, the need for sunlight’s Vitamin D, etc. Are we missing something because we are more attentive to the electric beat from our earphones, our computers, cultural

“advancement?” How do we connect with the resonance of that natural life that exists all around us? I am thinking of those who were connected who weren’t saints but whose cultural life included meaningful connections to the earth. My fatherin-law was an expert forager. A factory worker, he retained his connection to the earth. Taught by his mother, an immigrant from Italy, he knew the earth’s rhythms, knew when to look for the tender shoots of milkweed, the wild mustards, lambs’ ears and mushrooms that grew on trees and others with names I don’t know. He also knew, as Robin Wall Kimmerer said so beautifully in Braiding Sweetgrass, that taking from the earth required taking only enough, leaving enough for growth.

It may be his Italian heritage that kept him connected. As you drive along the Autopista in Italy you will see acres and acres of small gardens, cultivated by city dwellers. Even the most sophisticated urbanites retain the need to be close to the earth.

My English grandmother, too, retained that connection, knowing the signs of when to plant and when to harvest. She knew that taking us for walks along country lanes and pointing out the different kinds of plants as we ambled by was an important part of our educations. When we stayed with her, we were outdoors most of the time, playing in the woods and along the stream that ran next to the unpaved lane behind her house.

I know that I am a different person when I am in my garden. When I walk through the beauty of the woods. When I am picking berries to make jam. When I stand outside in the sunlight and watch the life all around me, the birds, the insects, the flowers, the trees … all living purposeful lives connected to the earth and each other.

There is a growing knowledge that being in nature is important for healthy children and adults. The premise of “The Last Child in the Woods” by Richard Louv tells us that we are separating ourselves from the very thing that created who and what we are. Our bodies and minds are the creation of life in nature, not changed by inventions, often stressed by the need for our ancient home.

Japanese physicians prescribe time in woodlands as a doctor here would prescribe medicine.

While the stresses of our modern world’s digital devices are often the biggest barrier to our being attentive to that which surrounds us, we can turn them off, or at least put them to sleep while we explore outside.

From “The Last Child in the Woods” there are these words:

“In our bones we need the natural curves of hills, the scent of chapparal, the whisper of pines, the possibility of wildness. We require these patches of nature for our mental health and our spiritual resilience.”

I’ve got my outside shoes on, weeder in hand … I am out.

Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Smoke testing can predict and prevent sanitary sewer overflows

If you happen to see smoke rising from the depths of your front yard next month, it may just be a vision of progress regarding the proper disposal of human sewage.

Sewer smoke testing is the most cost-effective method to find sources of surface water inflow and infiltration – the leading causes of wet weather sanitary sewer overflows. Fast and easy to do, smoke testing produces immediate results that can be acted on quickly often at minimal expense to the municipality.

At its Jan. 26 meeting, the village of Liverpool Board of Trustees unanimously approved spending $8,800 to pay JM Davidson Engineering to provide smoke testing services to several village neighborhoods.

Village Engineer Greg Sgromo received bids from three potential firms capable of smoke-testing. Davidson Engineering, based in Tonawanda, was lowest bidder.

Affected neighborhoods

The neighborhoods they’ll analyze are Hickory Street, Fourth and Birch streets, Balsam and Sixth streets and Tulip and Tamarack streets.

According to Sgromo, the process involves placing a high-capacity blower on top of a sanitary manhole and blowing “smoke” into the sewer system. The smoke will then escape the sewer system through pipe connections, leaks, cracks in the pipes or low vents in the system.

Residents may see field crews in the area during the May 31 – June 10 testing period opening manholes, walking through the neighborhood – including your yard – taking photographs, and documenting smoke sightings.

“Notices should be received by neighborhood homeowners about a week before the testing,” Sgromo said.

Now considered an industry standard, smoke-testing has been utilized by thousands of municipalities in all 50 states and around the world. Hundreds of millions of feet of sanitary sewer mains have been smoke-tested using smoke can-

dles, smoke blowers and smoke Livin’ in fluid, eliminating countless Liverpool faults and the sanitary sewer overflows that would result Russ Tarby from them.

Decoration Day help needed

Liverpool American Legion Post 188 is seeking volunteers to place flags on veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. To help, please meet at the Liverpool Cemetery at 9 a.m. Saturday May 28.

“Support from the Liverpool community will enable our veterans’ graves to be honorably recognized,” said Post 188 Commander Ken Palmer. If you can be there Saturday morning, call Ken at 315-4519544.

shooting deaths on the rise

Given the unimaginable tragedy that unfolded in Buffalo May 14, maybe it’s time for us to reflect on our troubled nation’s unsettling increase in shooting deaths. A deranged racist teenager from Broome County shot and killed 10 mostly Black individuals at a Tops supermarket that day on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo. Among the dead was 32-year-old Cicero native Roberta Drury, who was in the Queen City caring for her convalescent brother.

The New York Times and National Public Radio have recently reported that the country’s firearm homicide rate surged 35 percent from 2019 to 2020, hitting its highest level since 1994, according to new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The nationwide gun homicide rate was 6.1 per 100,000 Americans, up from 4.6, while the firearm suicide rate increased slightly from 7.9 to 8.1 per 100,000 people.

Amid the heightened stress of the pandemic and its economic fallout, some communities were hit notably harder: Counties with the highest poverty level saw dramatically higher rates, while the largest increases were seen among young black and indigenous men.

Local Lions Club helps kids play safely in the shade

To the editor:

Recently there was a story about the Play Safely in the Shade campaign at the North Syracuse Early Education Program. Our PTO had done a tremendous fundraiser to help reach our goal as we near the end of this fundraising campaign. But providing the original seed money, with a very generous donation of $10,000 was the North Syracuse-Liverpool Lion’s Club. They immediately saw the need and benefit of ensuring that young kids with special needs and their caregivers are protected from the hot sun while playing and learning. They visited with us in our new play area one beautiful morning last June and presented us with the first, very special donation towards our dream of healthy shade. This local Lions Club began in March of 1956 and has been supporting those with visual impairments and other challenges in our community ever since.

We at NSEEP would like to most sincerely thank the President Gloria Mitton, VP and Secretary Emily Sharp, Treasurer, Christi Corrigan, Member Chair Michael Frey, Tail Twister Carol Frey, Lion Tamer Robert Mitton and Directors Richard Frio and George Wasickanin and members Charles and Ochuwa Airebamen, David Blackburn, Tom Clegg, John Mehlek, Ray Rinaldi, Ray Sharp, Alicia Southworth and Susanne Wilkowski.

Last month I mentioned the importance of each person doing things like Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. But also that it is important for us to let our voices be heard at the corporate and government level. How do we do that?

Sign petitions that come your way via 350.org or Sierra Club or any number of environmental organizations. Sign letters to corporate leaders and to congressman. Establish an environmental advisory committee to your town or village board. Run for local government office on an environmental platform.

Since global warming and climate change are at tipping points now, it is imperative that we act not only locally, but globally. Fortunately governments and corporations are beginning to talk about the need to pay attention to their climate footprint. However, their actual movement on environmental issues is quite minimal. There seem to be supportive words but not substantive action. The reality of that inertia is unfortunately related to the almighty concern of the bottom line - the dollar.

So a way forward to lean into environmental action is to remove our dollars from being invested by these companies in dirty and ill chosen technologies. The divestment movement is gathering momentum and having a positive impact on our environmental choices. You can join that movement by finding out where your money is invested and redirecting those funds into organization that care about environmental, social, and governance issues. ESG companies are producing as good and better returns than companies that invest in fossil fuels and other climate destroying technologies.

Some places to find out how to divest and move your money into money making opportunities that are also sustainable and pass the ESG criteria are:

Hansen’s Advisory Services in Central New York at hansensadvisory.com.

Also Rivers and Mountains GreenFaith Circle provides a service to walk you through the process of divestment. They will be providing a workshop next fall from St. James’ Church, Skaneateles and on Zoom. Visit rivers-mountains-greenfaith.org/divestmentfossil-fuel.

And think about where your gift money goes. Do you donate to your alma mater? Ask where they invest their money. If it is not in ESG companies, suggest to them that you would like to see a more environmentally responsible balance sheet before you give them more funds.

Individual investors do nave a choice. We can make our voices heard in the marketplace. We vote with our pocket book. Buy from socially and environmentally responsible organizations and invest with socially and environmentally responsible institutions. God’s green earth will thank you.

Hate and tragedy strike again

Roberta Drury. Margus Morrison. Andre Mackneil. Aaron Salter. Geraldine Talley. Celestine Chaney. Heyward Patterson. Katherine Massey. Pearl Young. Ruth Whitfield.

Say their names. Honor their lives. Do not ever let them be forgotten.

These are the 10 beautiful souls who, on a Saturday afternoon in Buffalo, were just living their lives, all at a Tops Friendly Markets, all gunned down only because of who they were, and where they were.

As a person who grew up less than 10 minutes from where that Tops was located, what happened was, and is, an open wound straight to the heart. And what made it more sickening was that we’ve seen it all before.

At a church in Charleston, South Carolina, or at a synagogue in Pittsburgh, or at a Wal-Mart in El Paso, the story is the same. Ordinary, innocent people targeted by angry white men armed beyond reason, their futures snuffed out, their communities left with scars that have still not healed.

Maybe they could move on if the twisted, perverted ecosystem in which hate and prejudice are rewarded with attention, air time and millions of dollars did not exist, spitting out an endless list of made-up grievances, always portraying themselves as victims.

Just typing these words boils my blood. Every time one of these mass shootings takes place, the usual crowd offers the usual, and completely useless, thoughts and prayers, then immediately pivots to deflecting the blame from themselves to some other easy scapegoat. It’s mental illness, they’ll tell you. Or it’s video games. Or rock music. Funny, though – they have issues of mental illness, video games and rock music in other nations without the constant drumbeat of gun violence. What’s their secret?

Actually, it’s not so secret. Combine the hate culture with a gun culture completely out of control and barely disguised white nationalism that tells us we’re all doomed because a whole range of “others” might gain more political and economic power, and, well, look what happened in Buffalo.

Nothing will substantially change until we examine, from top to bottom, the way hatred is codified and celebrated instead of getting shunned to the sidelines, as it should.

Often we hear that prejudice is not something we are born with, that it is taught to us by our elders and that, once it is put in place, it’s impossible to dislodge.

Thus, those most responsible for planting the seeds of these these horrible massacres are the parents who, through indoctrination or indifference, allowed their sons (they’re all male) to get swept up in the tides of bigotry flooding through the Internet or pouring out of certain cable channels and their most visible hosts.

We in the media don’t help, either. Instead of focusing on the victims and their families, every single time this happens the attention is always given to

the killers, their backgrounds, Random Thoughts their motives, when in essence it’s the same thing over and over – manifestos of hatred, Phil Blackwell lots of guns and ammunition, then death. The monsters are not shunned or forgotten, as they should. They are elevated, their methods laid out for others of a similar evil mindset to copy and mimic. Next thing you know, another place of quiet, in another innocent city, is upended and changed forever. About the only saving grace from what happened in that Tops on Jefferson Street is seeing how the Buffalo community, individuals and businesses and civic institutions like the Bills and Sabres, have gone all-in pledging to help in any way they can, further proving the point that “City of Good Neighbors” is quite accurate. But it shouldn’t take mass tragedy to do this, or to expose the sad fact that Buffalo’s East Side lacked any real grocerystore options beyond that Tops and shouldn’t turn into a “food desert”. We’ve spent way too long setting aside the root issues that have caused this repeated cycle of horrible violence, all done by Whites, all aimed at non-Whites. And we can’t wait for ineffective governments to address it. All of us, as citizens, have an obligation to call out, expose and drive out the hatemongers whose malicious behavior guarantees that more shootings, and more heartbreaks, are around the corner. Buffalo will come back. If only we remember.

in 2013, igor the kitten came to the shelter as a stray. he was adopted a few weeks later and happily spent the next several years as a beloved pet. unfortunately, igor came back to the shelter a few months ago when his family was no longer able to care for him. At 9 years old, igor is considered a senior. he’s been well-loved and (at 17 pounds) well-fed. He gets along well with other cats and is a staff favorite. He’s mellow, but he’s not above enjoying a catnip buzz! he’s just a really nice cat. if you’d like to give a deserving cat a second chance at a happy home, igor’s the guy for you! For more information about adoption, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

The Skaneateles Area Arts Council (SKARTS) announced funding for its 2022 grant awards for art and cultural activities. Grants are awarded to groups and individuals within a 15-mile radius of the village of Skaneateles. Applications are located at the SKARTS website grants page: art4skarts.org/grant-application.The deadline for submission is May 31, 2022.

All artists, arts organizations, choral groups, museums, schools, theaters and other not-forprofit organizations committed to the arts are encouraged to apply. Multiple grants are issued with a maximum of $1,000 per grant. Not all applicants are awarded grants. Grant winners are identified at SKARTS’ sole discretion through their judging process.

According to Laurel Moranz, SKARTS president, “Thanks to our many donors’ generosity, the SKARTS board was able to approve funds for the 2022 grant program. We are so grateful that the community stepped up to help our grants funding even though we were unable to hold our fund-raising art show due to the pandemic.”

Moranz also noted, “I’m happy to report that in 2022, Art4Skarts, our annual fund-raiser and juried art show, will return. This exciting event will showcase the work of dozens of local artists. The opening reception will be on Thursday, Sept. 15 and the art show will continue to September 24 during the Cayuga Museum’s normal hours. We are asking all our friends and supporters to save the dates.”

Since 2006, SKARTS has issued over 130 grants, contributing to the pursuit of artistic and cultural endeavors in the area.

The 13 grantees for 2021 represented grant winning projects that ranged widely from purchases of art supplies and programs to sponsorship of on-line musical performances or organizations and educational opportunities.

The SKARTS 2021 grantees included Auburn Public Theater, John D. Barrow Art Gallery, E. John Gavras Center, Genesee Elementary School, MasterWorks Chorale, Montessori School of The Finger Lakes, Schweinfurth Art Center, Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Skaneateles Historical Society, Skaneateles Library Association, Skaneateles Middle School, The Rev Theatre Company (formerly Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Inc.), and Victoria Fitzgerald Art.

The SKARTS grants program is funded primarily by their annual art show and artists reception, Art4Skarts. Direct financial support for the SKARTS grant program is always
