Mattydale Market returns June 1 Yard sales, Roxie Fair this weekend

Liverpool Chamber of Commerce

Audiences averaging 400 concert-goers turn out for the 22 free summer performances presented by the Liverpool Is The Place Committee at Johnson Park.

Mattydale Market will feature fresh produce, food trucks and items from artisan vendors from 4 to 7 p.m. each Wednesday in the Big Lots Plaza on Brewerton Road. By Ashley M. Casey Associate Editor The Mattydale Events Committee is kicking off summer this week with their outdoor Mattydale Market, which brings fresh produce, food trucks, vendors and community resources to the hamlet in Salina. Last year’s market began in August, so the committee is hoping an earlier start will mean a greater variety of vendors and visitors. “Every week will be like a different market,” said committee member Jennifer Sampson. “We want people to have new reasons to come.” Mattydale Market plans to have three or four produce vendors, two food trucks, 20 to 30 craft and artisan vendors and about 10 community agencies that promote education, public safety, and local sports and activities such as Scouting or Pop Warner. “I really wanted to make sure we had space for a lot of them and a lot of different types of them,” Sampson said. Prevention Network will offer Narcan training and resources for those struggling with mental illness and addiction. The Onondaga County Sheriff ’s Office will measure and give away bike helmets for children. Also among Mattydale Market’s guests is Book Van-Go. Created in 2018 by now-retired North Syracuse Central School District teacher Sue Straub, Book Van-Go visits parks in North Syracuse and Mattydale and provides free books to school-age children. To add to the spirit of giving back to the community, Mattydale Market also collects donations for a different local organization each month. St. Margaret’s food pantry is the June beneficiary.

“When you donate to that you’ll be entered into a raffle for an item that was donated by one of our vendors,” Sampson said. Due to last year’s abbreviated season, the market did not charge a vendor fee. This year, nonprofits can still set up for free, but craft and artisan vendors must pay a weekly fee. The Mattydale Events Committee will split each month’s fee revenue with that month’s chosen cause. “It’s 100% going back into the community whether it’s events or donations, which we’re really excited about,” Sampson said. The 3rd Ward Community Group, which includes Mattydale and Pitcher Hill, recently received nonprofit status, which will make it easier to handle donations and secure insurance for events. “We’re going to fall under that umbrella, which is going to open up so many more doors,” Sampson said of the Mattydale Events Committee. The events committee is looking for volunteers to help with events such as the market and holiday celebrations. “We really need people to be able to bring back the community and the neighborly experience,” Sampson said. For the past two summers, the Liverpool Is The Place Committee was forced to cancel its summer concert series at Johnson Park due to the COVID19 pandemic. Last year, after local governments lifted bans on public gatherings, the committee managed to stage four guitar-oriented concerts in late July and August. This year, a full 22-concert series will open at 7 p.m. Monday, June 6, with the FabCats, and will continue every Monday and Wednesday through Aug. 17. On Wednesday, June 8, Syracuse Area Music Awards Hall of Famer Joe Whiting will impress the park’s audience with his blend of roots rock, blues, country and soul music. Many Liverpool-area musicians will be featured in several of the concerts. The Ron Spencer Band, led by the Galeville guitarist, will perform classic American blues-roots music and original compositions on June 13. The Liverpool Commu-

OBITUARIES Susan E. Rhinehart, 69 Artist, loved animals, music

Susan Elaine Ventimiglia Rhinehart, age 69, of Skaneateles, passed away on May 18, 2022, from complications of a rare blood cancer. She passed peacefully holding the loving hands of her husband and daughter as the sun was setting in a gorgeous array of colors. In 1972 Sue graduated from Skaneateles High School, as did her two children, and now her grandson Marshall to follow. Sue left Skaneateles to pursue her study of fine arts outside of Boston at Lasell College. After graduating in 1974, she returned to Skaneateles to take care of her parents when she joined the staff at the Old Stone Mill and met the love of her life, her best friend Jim. After managing to win over an impossibly discerning Italian father, Jim proposed, and they were married at Sue’s family home on The Lane. Jim and Sue enjoyed 43 years of marriage together causing trouble, having adventures and giving back to their community. To say that Sue was beautiful is an understatement. She had a prolific entrepreneurial spirit. From launching her own women’s fashion boutique Creations in downtown Skaneateles, to working for many years at Skaneateles Furs, and many other career stops along the way, she will no doubt be remembered as a local and stylish icon of the village. Sue later continued to pursue her career as a fine artist, specializing in artist pastels and graphite. She especially loved to draw animals, and a few of us are blessed to have our own Sue Rhinehart original artwork. Sue won several awards for her artwork, most recently including a blue ribbon at the New York State Fair. Sue’s love of animals and nature was unmistakable. Like a Disney Princess, animals of all types would flock to her everywhere she went. Many animals in need were rescued or adopted by Sue’s nurturing and patient heart, including Jim. She was tremendously proud of her arabian horses Dodie and Dagger, who she trained, rode and even competed in many equestrian events. Many of us will remember her with her border collies Tippy, Montana and Torie. Music was among her many passions. Many of us have had the pleasure of hearing Sue sing along to the JukeBox, or even on occasion with a

Susan E. Rhinehart band or Karaoke. In the next life, she will surely be a country music star. Sue enjoyed visiting her son DJ and his family in remote Alaska, hiking, fishing, and helping out with her grandchildren. Naturally, she always caught the biggest fish on the boat, spotted the many whales and puffins, and remained a cherished best friend of her daughter in-law throughout the years. In March of 2022, Sue enjoyed a much-needed vacation in Arizona, with her husband, kids and grandkids, a special and memorable time for the family. Susan was predeceased by her father William Ventimiglia and mother Eleanor Smith. She is survived by her loving husband James Rhinehart, her daughter Eleanor Rhinehart, grandson Marshall Fraher, her son Donald James (DJ) Rhinehart, her daughter-in-law Desiree Rhinehart and grandsons William and Ryland Rhinehart. To continue the love that Sue gave all of us for so many years, we invite you to make a donation in her honor to a local family whose daughter, Laila, 13 years old, is on a three-year journey of healing from cancer. Laila and her family are in urgent need of our love and support, please help us reach (and surpass) our goal of $20,000. To donate please visit gofund. me/1c489a7c. Calling hours were held on Tuesday, May 24 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Robert D. Gray Funeral Home. Funeral service is private. To send condolences, visit robertdgrayfuneralhome.com.

The Central New York Chapter, National Railway Historical Society, announced the reopening of the Martisco Station Railroad Museum May 29. For the past several weeks chapter members have been preparing to reopen for the summer season. It is located at 5085 Martisco Road, the side road Route 174 between Camillus and Marcellus just south of the railroad underpass. Hours are Sundays noon to 4 p.m. through the first weekend in October and admission is free. Current COVID guidelines apply to all visitors. What would happen if CNY golfers saw a sign in the Pro Shop of the course they just drove 45 minutes to play, that said, “You must pass a golf exam or you will not be able to play today”? Either the Police would be called, the local Judge would be called…or there would be a few choice words directed at the management or ownership of the golf course for at least an hour…maybe two. Or perhaps we might believe the sign was just a joke. It is certainly not required in the U.S. but is there anywhere in the world where it is required to pass an exam before golfers would be allowed to play? The answer is yes! Can you guess where? It’s the Netherlands, or for those of us who are often misguided, it’s Holland. There are a total of 250 golf courses in the Netherlands serving 400,000 registered club members. Golf is a big business for the Dutch but it has not attracted as many visiting golfers as one of Europe’s most popular vacation destinations…yet. Compared to the almost 17,000 golf courses in the U.S., the Netherlands hardly has the same logistical problems to enforce the “Examination Rule” but nevertheless, they have one. maple sugar. They had to be mass produced, but the quality was always maintained. A leaky sap bucket was a failure! Because of the great salt wells in Geddes, Salina, Liverpool and Syracuse, and the heavy growth of timber that totally covered the town of Clay, there were unending resources for a long while. Almost every male at one time or another followed some branch of the business. The Central New York cooper industry was second in the United States with as many Clay cooper shops as the rest of the state.

inside of the log and curving the outside with the use of the draw knife and cooper’s adze. Lastly, the hoops — which tightly held the barrel together — were shaved from saplings of hickory, white ash or white oak. Precision was most important and Clay carried on a tremendous hoop trade. The staves rived to correct size were slipped into the grooves in the bottom or chine of the barrel and the hoop slid over to draw them close. The cooper’s ability for accuracy with such simple tools proved him to be an extremely skilled artisan. The coopering aristocrats or “tight” coopers could shape, dress, and bevel the staves so accurately that the resultant container could be as tight as a tin pail. These were used for cider, whiskey and meat; the barrels to

Question: Do you recognize this building? What was the initial purpose for this building, its first name, its location and why was it abandoned? Last week’s answer: Pictured is a wooden barrel made by a cooper, one of the most important members of the early Clay community. Also there is a drawing made by Steven F. Ward of a sap bucket and firkin to go with his report from which the research material was obtained for this article. The cooper would take a tree and convert it into barrels that could even hold water with the aid of just a few tools. He was depended upon for flour barrels, pork barrels, meat tubs, wash

tubs, butter tubs, sap barrels, old oaken buckets that hung in the well, pails for milking cows, and feeding calves kitchen pails and oaken dash churns. All of these were found on a well-ordered farm. When the canal was completed in 1824, the salt industry rose to enormous heights. With the timber covering Clay’s landscape, it became the place where barrel making was the most popular livelihood. First choice were the big white oak trees; then white pine, and lastly hemlock. Most cooper sheds were small but with the demand in this area, they grew. His simple tools included a hammer, a hoop driver, a short-handled axe or cooper’s adze, a carpenter’s saw and a draw knife. The staves (also called bolts) were made by hollowing out the

There was a time in America Bike safety our voice

There is nothing like the feeling of getting out and going for a nice ride on your bike. For many of us this was an important right of passage. There was the special moment when, after a lot of trial and error and a skinned knee or two for some of us, when you learn to find and keep your balance and could ride securely on two wheels all on your own. For many it is a first taste of freedom and the chance to transport ourselves a little farther from home and have a little more independence. Riding bikes with friends as kids can lead to many fun adventures. And for many adults riding a bike is not only a fun means of transportation, but also offers a chance to relax, perhaps get out and take a path you might not otherwise take on foot or in a car and explore and it offers a chance to get in some extra exercise when we venture out without our cars. For some it even becomes more than a hobby and offers exciting opportunities to compete and go for long range rides with like minded people. And with the warmer weather of spring and summer there will likely be more bikes out on the road and this means bicyclists as well as pedestrians will be out and for all involved as well as motorists, there are some important safety tips worth keeping in mind. According to AAA, May was both Global Youth Traffic Safety Month and Bike Safety Month, but these tips are valuable for everyone’s safety year round. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 846 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2019, with most killed between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., and most often in urban areas. Males are eight times more likely than females to be fatally hit while riding a bicycle. However, what’s more alarming, is the number of pedestrians killed in collisions. The NHTSA reports that, in 2019, 6,205 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes, that’s 85 pedestrians killed every 85 minutes. With more families walking and cycling, AAA has tips to ensure everyone’s safety while sharing the road. Tips for Pedestrians: Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. Walk on sidewalks whenever possible and cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible. Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road. Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night. Tips for Bicyclists: Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, including riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals. Signal all turns. Wear a bicycle helmet every time and on every ride. Be visible. Wear bright colors in daytime, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use head and taillights at night. Remember that respect is a two-way street. Show motorists the same courtesy that you expect from them. Tips for Drivers: Stay alert—avoid all distractions while driving. Yield to bicyclists when turning. Make a visual check for bicyclists by scanning mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic. Slow down and give at least 3 feet of clearance when passing. Never honk your horn at a bicyclist—it could cause them to swerve into traffic or off the roadway and crash.

T

hese are terrible times, times that have elevated gun culture to the point that the gun, particularly the automatic rifle, has become the instrument by which all problems are solved. My husband and I, shocked again, as you no doubt have been at the senseless murder of innocent children and their teachers in Texas, compared how the times have changed. As a short refuge from these difficult times, I share with you my husband’s images of summers in the late 1940’s and ‘50’s’ “ We lived in the Corn Hill section of Utica, sharing streets with neighbors who were also family, immigrants, first and second generation Americans who combined the cultures of Italy and the United States into wonderful summers for my brother Sam and me. Both of our parents worked at the Oneida Knitting Mills and so, in the summers, when we were 10 and 11, and 12 , we were “on our own” during the day. Now, to be truthful, being “on your own” only meant that your parents didn’t know what went on until they got home. Supervision was provided by the eyes and ears of neighbors and family. We were in and out of each other’s houses and were expected to obey adults as if they were parents as the adults were expected to look out for us as they would their own children. What did we do? Weekends were busy. Often our

Ramblings from the empty nest

Ann Ferro parents would take us out to eat at the one and only Joe’s on Pellitteri Avenue. My parents were harsh critics of food eaten outside the home and Joe’s made the cut. Everyone ate at Joe’s. Even my Uncle Joe, who lived across the street ate there. Eating there was like eating at home. And thinking about the name Joe. In our family there were so many named Joe and Mary that we had a series of nicknames to identify who we were talking about. Of course these were nicknames we only used at home. I can’t share them, even today. Family, so much family, visiting all the time. There wasn’t a day that family didn’t visit us or we visit them. My mother came from a family of 10 siblings and my father came from a family of six. Aunts and Uncles and cousins all over Utica. Visits meant gossip and food, “Come sit, eat.” More eyes and ears to keep you in line. East Utica never had a downtime when it came to excitement and fun. The Catholic churches in the area held festivals that we called feasts. There were the Mary of Mt. Carmel feast, the St. Cosmos and Damian Feast, the San Gennaro Feast … and others, the names of which I can’t recall. For several days, the area around each church would hold cel-

ebrations that included a dramatic parade when numbers of men would carry a heavy statue of the Saint after whom the feast was named. There was music and dancing for the adults and games, food and opportunities to get into trouble for the kids. But, again, the people who were there were neighbors, family, lots of family, the same eyes and ears as on the block. My parents owned a small camp on Oneida Lake that they rented out over the summer months. This meant that, at least on some weekends, my brother and I would accompany them to the camp to help ready it for the next occupants. After we finished our chores, we could go swimming and visit Oneida Lake’s version of a boardwalk. Bright lights, barkers, excitement for Sam and me. I had a bike. I loved that bike. It took me to marvelous places, at least in the eyes of a pre-teen. I could ride it to the park and get into a pick-up ball game, or ride it along the railroad tracks to the very first try outs for Little league ever in Utica. I made it as a center fielder and spent my one and only Little League year happily playing ball. Why only one year? I was 12 and aged out at 13. I rode that bike for two miles each way for all practices and games. Good times. On any ordinary day, my brother and I played in the shade of the trees along our street with the other kids who lived on the block. We did ordinary things like

play hide and seek, climb trees … actually we climbed just about anything that you could climb including the roofs of sheds. Pretending, a wonderful ability, we were WWII commandoes climbing into the headquarters of the enemy, jumping off, we were paratroopers or one of our movie heroes. I broke my wrist when I fell out of one of the trees. Jennie Minuti took care of me until my mother came home. I had THE lecture from both of them. We sat on porches and played pitch for hours, we traded Superman, Archie and Wonder Woman comic books, or took off to the corner store to get a popsicle or a cold bottle of soda. We went to the movies; spent hours in the theaters watching two features, cartoons, news, and a serial, sometimes twice. The stars of these were the cowboys in the white hats. Tex Ritter, Gene Autry, Roy Rodgers and others were our poster heroes. We wiled away the hours in neighborhood camaraderie, with voices calling us to good behavior from all around. It was a warm and innocent time, when we were surrounded by people who genuinely cared for us. It was that village that some always talk about when raising children. It seemed to work just fine.” Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. Sod. A fixture for the past several years at The Retreat, Joe was toasting his good-byes with his best buddies at the bar, when they urged him to give us all a song by which to remember him. It didn’t take too many words of encouragement before Joe stood and belted out an ancient Irish folk tuned called “The Rooster.” Among its memorable lyrics is this telling stanza: We had some chickens, no eggs would they lay We had some chickens, no eggs would they lay Oh, my wife said, “Honey, we’re losing money! “Because them chickens no eggs will they lay!” Then came a rooster into our yard and he caught them chickens right off of their guard They’re laying eggs now like they never used to.

And red foxes have been spotted at Bass and Second streets, Fourth and Oswego streets and also near Liverpool Elementary School between Hickory and Second streets. Keep your eyes peeled!

You just can’t have it all

Beware Justin Thomas. A second PGA ChamRandom pionship, and a second major title, achieved with Thoughts a come-from-behind win Phil Blackwell at Southern Hills, further cements Justin’s place among golf ’s elite, helping him match Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson while getting close to Jordan Spieth, Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy in terms of total major wins. Alas, we will want more. And soon. Go one or two majors without another win, and it’s forgivable. Go further, and it turns into a cloud, a shadow. Wait any longer, and the burden and pressure only increases, as if they’re running out of time even with years of prime ahead. Think this is an exaggeration? McIlroy, absent a major since 2014, gave it a go at the PGA, shot 68 in the final round but missed a lot of chances late, and took off, angry, without speaking to the press, unusual for someone so media-friendly. Spieth has now gone nearly five years since a major victory and he hears about it every day. People are already talking about a slump for Morikawa not even 12 months removed from his win at Royal St. George’s. Koepka has fallen back, hurt by injuries and sky-high expectations. See, it’s not enough, we keep telling them. They all must be superstars, must transcend the sport, must dominate and win and keep winning. Only then will they reach the exalted level Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson achieved. Ah, but one quick look at Tiger and Phil tells us that the price of extreme greatness can be an extreme downfall. The travails Woods has gone through, personal and physical, are more than well-chronicled. Yet it all stemmed from the same mindset – he had everything and wanted more. Was it greed? Was it a tragic flaw? Either way, the result was personal disgrace, from which Tiger has at least recovered to some degree, along with a physical breakdown that, exasperated by a near-fatal car accident, makes him more of a figurehead than he ever should be for a man in his late 40s. At least Tiger played (for three rounds) at Southern Hills, though the effort may have curtailed his chances in playing other majors this year, and who knows how more down the road. Mickelson, on the other hand, appeared, in 2021, to have given his career an exclamation point when he strode to a PGA victory at Kiawah Island and, a month short of 51, became the oldest major champion. Ah, but Lefty, too, wanted a lot more. His insatiable nature to gamble and go after greater riches and power PGA l Page 13

Liverpool tops C-NS in sectional semis

Cicero-North Syracuse attacker Owen Michaud (10) hits for one of his four goals past Cicero-North Syracuse’s Joe Malecki in last Tuesday’s Section III Class A semifinal. Michaud had five goals and four assists in the Warriors’ 11-8 victory. by Phil Blackwell In order to win the Section III Class A championship, the Liverpool boys lacrosse team would need to avenge three of its five regular-season defeats. That included having to go to Bragman Stadium and defeating Cicero-North Syracuse in Tuesday’s sectional semifinal - which the no. 3 seed Warriors did, leading most of the way and holding off all of the no. 2 seed Northstars’ comeback attempts to win 11-8. These teams had only met once this spring, on May 6. There, C-NS trailed by two late in the fourth quarter, but rallied and prevailed 1211 in overtime. Something similar shaped up in the rematch, but in the long run the Northstars did not recover from the 5-0 run the Warriors put together in the game’s early stages. It started just 10 seconds after Mike Koehler’s goal erased a 1-0 Liverpool lead late in the first quarter. Jaylen Graham won the ensuing faceoff and Jackson Furr put the Warriors back in front - to stay, as it turned out.

Graham and Joe Sacco added goals before the period ended, and in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter two more goals - one by Gavin Kenna, another by Owen Michaud made it 6-1. Led by Mason Blakeman’s pair of goals, C-NS battled back and closed the gap to 7-4 by halftime. Both sides scored only once in the third period, the Northstars constantly frustrated as Liverpool goalie Owen Salanger kept making big stops on his way to 20 saves overall. Three times in the final period, C-NS would pull within two. Each time, the Warriors answered it, the attack led by sn Michaud, who assisted on late goals by Sacco and Aaron Clouthier and then clinched it by converting his fifth goal with 1:40 to play. Along with the five goals, Michaud earned four assists as Dom Osbeck got two assists. On C-NS’s side, Blakeman finished with four goals as Koehler scored twice and single goals went to Elijah Martin and Ian Leahey. Liverpool would face top seed Baldwinsville in the sectional title game after the Bees routed

Liverpool goalie Owen Salanger (17) defends a shot from Cicero-North Syracuse’s Nick Ludwig (24) in last Tuesday’s Section III Class A semifinal. Salanger stopped 20 of 28 shots as the Warriors beat the Northstars 11-8. Syracuse City 19-2 in the other semifinal.

C-NS girls track team claims sectional Class AA title by Phil Blackwell

Once again, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team proved too much for all of the competition - and the result was a Section III Class AA championship. The Northstars picked up 178 points to beat nine challengers in last Wednesday’s sectional meet at Baldwinsville’s Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, with Rome Free Academy earning 131 points for second place and Liverpool fifth with 50 points. Hannah Boyle, in the 1,500-meter run, put up a winning time of four minutes, 28.33 seconds, to go with an 800-meter title in 2.17.61. And Boyle nearly added a 400-meter title, too, but in 1:00.62 was second to Kate Putman’s winning 59.21. Putman would later get a second victory in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:09.22, more than 12 seconds ahead of the field. Completing a meet where she helped earn 38 points, Boyle, paired with Jaydin Mackey, Grace Murray and Skylar Denton, helped C-NS win the 4x400 relay in 4:08.32, with Liverpool fourth in 4:20.56. Putman also was second in the 3,000meter run in 9:56.39 as she helped Cameron Sisk, Marissa Navarra and Elliana Ballagh take second in the 4x800 relay in 9:50.46. Navarra took fourth in the 3,000 in 10:55.16. Lilly Capria, clearing 5 feet 1 inch, won the high jump, adding a second in the triple jump with 36’ 1/4” and fourth in the long jump with 15’10 3/4”. Going 1-2 in the pentathlon, C-NS had Morgan Hayes and Shannon Brown in a close duel until the closing 800-meter run, where Hayes pulled away and prevailed with 2,395 points to Brown’s 2,235. Murray won, too, taking the 400 hurdles in 1:05.06, more than two seconds ahead of the field. Mackey took second in the 100-meter dash in 12.97 seconds, then was also second in the 200-meter dash in 26.41. Kaleigh Bosimenu was third in the pole vault, clearing 8’6”. Danielle Crivelli was fifth in the 100 hurdles in 17.30 seconds and sixth in the triple jump, while Navarra was sixth in the 1,500. To highlight Liverpool’s efforts, the 4x100 relay team of Mikayla Greene, Janea Hamilton-Brown and Anaharie Anderson prevailed in 51.64 seconds, with Mackey,

Camryn Jacob, Grace Murray and Jessica Doty third for C-NS in 52.04. Allie Cary won the shot put, her toss of 36’3 3/4” well clear of the 31’9 1/4” from C-NS’s Cha’Nya Jones in second place, with Jones also third in the discus with a throw of 81’11” as Bosimenu (79’7”) was fourth. Kaleigh Buck, Taylor Page, Eva Woodworth and Addison Ziegler were third in the 4x800 in 10:05.77 as Mikayla Greene (13.34 seconds) beat out Anaharie Anderson (13.40) for fourth in the 100 sprint. Sophia Jarosz took fifth in the 200 in 27.45. Meanwhile, in the boys sectional Class AA meet C-NS managed to earn 63 points to win a close fight for second that included fifth-place Liverpool (50), though they were all well back of Baldwinsville’s winning total of 168 points. But no individual topped what the Warriors’ Ryan Hagan did, sweeping all three distance races. it started when Hagan went 4:24.01 to take the 1,600-meter run as Jacob Makhlouf (4:38.38) was fifth. Then, in the 800, Hagan prevailed in a swift 1:54.86, all a prelude to the 3,200meter run, where in 9:41.14 he held off F-M’s Nolan McGinn (9:42.65), with Makhlouf (10:10.24) again in fourth place. Another win for Liverpool came in the long jump, where Ny’Quez Madison went 21’6 1/4”, beating out the 21’3 1/4” from C-NS’s Carlton Garnes, who did prevail in the 110 hurdles in 16.08 seconds as teammate Trevon Walker (17.17) was third. Hagan, Makhlouf, Austin Ziegler and Aidan Maturo were third in the 4x800 in 8:50.60, beating out C-NS (8:56.33) in fourth place. Sajan Mishra finished seventh in the pentathlon with 1,812 points. C-NS’s Gavin McAllister cleared 10’6” for second in the pole vault and was fifth in the 400 sprint in 52.06 seconds, with Dante Melfi (2:05.10) beating out Nathan Connors (2:05.99) for fourth place in the 800.The Northstars were fifth in the 4x100 in 44.75 seconds.

The Cicero-North Syracuse girls track and field team earned the Section III Class AA championship last Wednesday at Baldwinsville, the Northstars finishing with 178 points to beat runner-up Rome Free Academy by 47 points.

C-NS Blue girls golfers claim title by Phil Blackwell

For a long time, the Cicero-North Syracuse Blue girls golf team had to watch as other sides, especially FayettevilleManlius, claimed the majority of Section III honors. But when last Tuesday’s sectional tournament was held at Kanon Valley Country Club, it was the Northstars winning the large-school championship by a margin of just six strokes over F-M’s Green team. These two sides had split their regular-season meetings, each one winning at home. So it was little surprise that their post-season battle would also prove a close one. Leading the way for C-NS Blue, Jessica Ricciardi shot an 89, which tied her for fourth place among individuals, not far from the winning 86 from Watertown’s Jillian Draper. Then Isabella Borte picked up a 99 to tie for 14th place and two eighth-graders – Chloe Tice and Andrea Wheaton –

The Cicero-North Syracuse Blue girls golf team won the Section III large-school championship last Tuesday at Kanon Valley Country Club in Oneida, shooting 399 to hold off Fayetteville-Manlius Green by six shots for top honors. closely followed, Tice shooting a 104 and Wheaton adding a 107. That was enough to put up a team total of 399, which beat F-M Green’s total of 405. Gabby Dardis, Bella Fullmer and Heirot Miller each shot 101 for the Hornets as Alana Isley picked up a 102. Gabby DiOrio had a 112 and Mackenzie Wessels shot 123 and Ava Mazzoli a 126. C-NS Green’s Lindsey Kubala had a 124.

Liverpool finished with a team score of 454 as Madelyn Turck led the Warriors, posting a 102 to tie Isley for 24th place. Jewelyana Daniels added a 107, Emma Fenwick shot 119 and Ella Foriero finished at 126. C-NS Blue will go to Wilton’s McGregor Links this weekend to take part in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships.

L’pool baseball knocked out by B’ville by Phil Blackwell

It was a season of growth and learning for the Liverpool baseball team as it got an upclose look at what it would take to reclaim its place atop the area large-school ranks. The final lesson was offered in last Tuesday’s Section III Class AA quarterfinal, where the Warriors got a strong pitching performance from Noah Klasen, yet fell 3-0 to defending champion Baldwinsville. Three losses to the no. 3 seed Bees in the regular season did not discourage no. 6 seed Liverpool, who sent Klasen to the mound against B’ville ace Kai Girard. They were scoreless until the bottom of the second inning, when B’ville struck for all of its

runs off Klasen, one each driven in by Logan McIntyre, Aidan Milburn and Dean Welch. Klasen, who went five innings, and reliever Aidan Blincoe shut out the Bees the rest of the way and only allowed seven hits, three of them by Braden Seeber. But the Warriors were silenced at the plate by Girard, who only surrendered singles to Sam Michalak and Jack Hoppe and amassed eight strikeouts without allowing a walk. As Liverpool ended its season at 7-13, top seed Cicero-North Syracuse had little trouble in its sectional quarterfinal, shutting out no. 8 seed Rome Free Academy 10-0. Not wasting any time, the Northstars struck for three runs in each of the first two innings, adding two runs in the third for a quick 8-0 ad-
