On Saturday, July 23, a group of Cazenovia area residents is presenting a fundraiser at the Coal Yard bar and grill in DeRuyter to benefit Brett Johnson, a local resident and former Cazenovia business owner who was in a major motorcycle accident on March 26. By kate Hill Staff Writer This summer, a group of Cazenovia area residents is planning a fundraiser to benefit Brett Johnson, a local resident and former Cazenovia business owner who was in a major motorcycle accident on March 26 in Florida. The incident resulted in seven surgeries in 11 days, three weeks in intensive care, and months in the hospital. The fundraiser will be held on Saturday, July 23, from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Coal Yard (720 Railroad Street) bar and grill in DeRuyter. An entrance donation fee will include a meal of pulled pork, ziti, baked beans, and assorted salads and desserts. The event will also feature live music, 50/50 raffles, a silent auction and raffles for larger items, and a corn hole tournament. The raffle and auction items include golf passes at four to five local courses, an Alexandria Bay overnight package, half day kayak rentals, a Syracuse Mets family pack, a Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science and Technology (MOST) family pack, a wine refrigerator, various baskets and local gift certificates, a Vernon Downs overnight package, a Syracuse Pedal Tours package, a kayak, and several meat packages from local farmers. Starting at noon, up to 20 teams will compete in the double-elimination corn hole tournament. The cost is $60 per team and includes dinner. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place

teams. Teams can sign up at the bar. Call 315-8529932 for more information. “The money will go toward Brett’s medical expenses, transport, housing adaptations, and equipment,” said Event Co-Chair Pam Washbon. Washbon and Allison Rainbow are coordinating the event with help from several other friends of the Johnson family, including Christine June, Nancy Haws, Honey-Beth Nelson, Patty Slocum, and Ruthanne Stone, owner of the Coal Yard. On July 13, Innovation Collective (IC), in partnership with Cazenovia College, presented its final “Fireside Chat” at the Lincklaen House. This session highlighted the stories of two local leaders, Village Mayor Kurt Wheeler and Cazenovia College President Dave Bergh. IC is an Idaho-based grass roots startup community with a goal of “creating ecosystems that activate human flourishing.” Through curated events, mentorship, skills training, corporate partnerships, placemaking, and software, IC works to help individuals start and grow innovative businesses. Cazenovia College partnered with IC in 2021 to tap into its network of entrepreneurial and business innovators and experts, access to financial investors for business ventures, and ability to help people make connections for mutual benefit. According to the college’s website, the institution sponsored IC’s presence in Cazenovia with the goal of generating ideas for new academic offerings, unique educational enrichment experiences, and potential business endeavors to benefit both the college and the surrounding community. “These include helping students get their business ideas off the ground, exposing them to new industry mentors, and assisting in bringing topnotch resources and information to community-based business startups,” the website states. As part of its multi-faceted work within the community, IC organized a series of monthly Fireside Chats, evenings of storytelling and inspiration intended to serve as a connection point for community members, to provide a consistent message of hope and encouragement, and to make an innovation economy feel accessible. Typical Fireside Chat speakers are local entrepreneurs, civic leaders, politicians, and even unknown citizens. During the July 13 event, Wheeler and Bergh shared insight into everything from their childhoods and first jobs, to their successes, setbacks, and visions for Cazenovia’s future. The conversation was facilitated by Jenn Farwell, who served as IC community lead throughout the college’s one-year partnership with IC. Seated on stools in front of a dining room fireplace, Wheeler and Bergh took turns responding to a series of questions posed by Farwell.

Personal background

The son of a firefighter and a nurse, Wheeler was raised in New Woodstock, attended New Wood-

stock Elementary School, and graduated from Cazenovia High School. He studied at Harvard College on a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship and then served four years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. After spending some time in the business world, he decided to go back to school to pursue a master’s degree in teaching. After about 11 years away from home, Wheeler returned to Cazenovia in 1996 and began teaching at Cazenovia High School. Bergh was born in an Elmira hospital to a United Methodist minister and a high school English teacher who, at the time, resided in Watkins Glen. “I consider myself a Central New York native, [but] being a minister’s family meant that we moved periodically,” said Bergh. His formative years were spent in Jamesville, and the bulk of his schooling years were spent in the JamesvilleDeWitt Central School District. A year of his adolescence, however, was spent in southwest rural Georgia, where his parents were on sabbatical, volunteering with the then-fledgling organization Habitat for Humanity International. Stationed in Americus, GA, his parents were part of a group tasked with meeting with Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter — who resided in the nearby Plains, GA — to convince them to engage with Habitat for Humanity, with the goal of raising the organization’s profile. After the year in Georgia, Bergh and his family moved to Malone, NY, in the northernmost part of the state, where he graduated from high school. He has been at Cazenovia College for six years and held his current position for the past six months.

First jobs

Wheeler’s first paid job was unloading wagons of hay at age eight for 25 cents per load. His most interesting job as a young man was hand-digging graves in the New Woodstock Cemetery. “It paid $35 per grave, and it went up to $40,” Wheeler recalled. “If I worked really hard, I could do it in about four hours, and at that time $8 or $10 an hour was a fortune. [It was especially interesting] when you had to go there after your full day of haying and do it at night with a kerosene lantern at the head of the grave. . . I’ve always told people that all the jobs I’ve ever had since then, nothing compares to working on a farm or digging graves when it comes to level of difficulty.” Bergh said his first job was mowing lawns as a pre-teen for eight hours a day over his summer vacations. He also had summer jobs working in a Fireside l Page 14

While many Central New Yorkers would contend that winter is no reason not to cook outside on the grill, for many summer is the traditional season when it comes to grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking. Whether it is burgers and hotdogs, smoking ribs or brisket for hours, whipping up a more complicated dish or cooking up seafood, vegetarian options like Portobello mushrooms or newer meatless alternatives, many would agree there is just something about food that has been cooked on the grill. There is a flavor that many look forward to enjoying during these long summer days spent with friends and family enjoying an afternoon or evening outside relaxing and sharing good food together. But whether it is a high end outdoor kitchen arrangement, a gas grill, charcoal or even roasting some hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire, it is important to keep certain safety measures in mind. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, some 5,700 grill fires take place on residential properties every year. Most are caused by malfunctioning gas grills. These fires cause an average of $37 million in damage annually to properties, structures, and possessions, including gazebos, sheds, and lawn furniture. And thousands of people visit emergency rooms every year because they’ve burned themselves while grilling. Some basics include keeping a fully functioning fire extinguisher close by and making sure you know how to use it in the event it is needed. It is also good to get into the habit of keeping your grill or other cooking surfaces clean. The build up of grease and fat can cause flare ups that might not only ruin your food but may lead to a potentially more serious fire. It is also important to remember to grill in a well ventilated area. The potential for carbon monoxide to build up, particularly with charcoal, can pose a potential health risk. AAA has shared a number of other tips to help ensure you and your guests are safe when cooking outdoors. Before grilling, read and follow the owner’s manual. Place your grill at least 10 feet away from walls and deck railings to prevent fires from igniting buildings. Keep your grill away from decorations, such as hanging plants and umbrellas. Never leave a lit grill unattended. If the flame on your grill goes out, turn the grill and gas off. Wait at least 15 minutes before relighting and always make sure your grill lid is open before igniting. Maintenance and storage are also important considerations. When setting up at the start of grilling season, check grill hoses for cracks, holes, and blockages. Blockages caused by food drippings or insects can be cleared with a wire or pipe cleaner. Run a soap solution – one part liquid soap, one part water – along hoses and at connections. If the solution bubbles, then there is a gas leak that needs repair. Store propane tanks outside and away from your home. Always check to ensure that valves are turned off. AAA also recommends being aware of what is covered by insurance should a property owner have an accident. Following the tips above may help prevent a grill fire from spreading to your home, but if a fire does occur, a standard homeowner’s policy typically covers the following: Damage to the primary residence; Damage to personal possessions, such as tables or lawn chairs; Damage to insured structures on your property, such as sheds or gazebos; and Injuries to a guest, under the liability portion of the policy. By taking a few minutes to ensure you and your grill are being as safe as possible, it will help to make sure you and your guests can enjoy your time together enjoying good company and good food this summer.

Two years ago, a good part of my garden disappeared. I come from a long line of gardening greatness. My mother? She had tour de force gardens filled with an astonishing variety of perennials. Some she bought, and some she acquired by asking complete strangers if she could have a piece of a particular plant in their gardens. You cannot believe how horrifying it was to have your mother pull into someone’s driveway, knock on the door and ask for a piece of a plant she had spied from the road. Oddly, most people would say, “of course,” help her gather the cutting and then become engaged in a lively conversation about gardening while I slumped down in the car hoping that no one I knew could see me. That is how she acquired so many beautiful flowers. I do think that she had some kind of special aura about her that inveigled people to share plants and that gave her an almost mystical power to hang this summer’s geraniums upside down in the basement during the winter, replant them in the spring and have them grow. Who does that? Certainly not me. When I tried it, my geraniums all became a soggy decomposing messes. My garden, which can be described as eclectic, meaning that without the invasive plants and a few perennials sprinkled here and there, would be weeds. I paid my grandsons two cents a plant to remove black walnut seedlings. They made over five dollars for that job and even more when I paid them to identify and pull-out goldenrod. If I had to pay them to remove the Bishop’s weed, gill over the ground and ivy, I would be broke. But, two years ago, a good portion of my weedy overgrown garden just disappeared into a mass of vegetal corpses. The delphiniums, foxglove, cimicifuga, meadowsweet,

astilbe, rhubarb and echinacea literally collapsed. Across the lawn, the five-foot-tall peppermint developed some kind of disease and passed on, leaving very ugly skeletons. What kills mint? I loved that mint. When you walked past, its scent would wonderfully attach itself to your clothing. When you mowed the escaped offspring of the mint, the yard smelled glorious. A gift from a colleague and friend, it had lived on the south side of our house across from the autumn-flowering Hostas for 20 years. No one seemed to know what vectors were involved in this mass carnage. On the advice of my sister who inherited the family’s green thumb - she is a bona fide Master Gardener - we removed all dead or dying plants and watched to see if anything would grow in the blighted areas. Ajuga and lamium grew with punctuations of celandine. These grew riotously — everywhere. Whatever had slain my lovely taller perennials didn’t seem to affect them. But who has a garden of only ajuga and lamium and celandine? While I dreamed of a new garden, reminiscent of English gardens full of tall flowering lovelies, replanting anything that required digging was problematic. My physical limitations made it awkward. I had a tendency to fall over when using the spade … which means that I couldn’t use my right foot to push the spade into the soil without falling … so inconvenient….and so my dream garden remained only that. All was not lost. The next summer, my sister Joan, the Master Gardener, herself with a mending broken leg, drove four hours from her own beautiful gardens in Putnam County with boxes of plants to put in the now-empty areas. She brought all kinds of goodies, echinacea, black eyed susans, coreopsis, portulacas and others that

There are at present employed upon the canals of the state 6,870 boats; having an aggregate capacity of 1,225,000 tons and valued at a little over twenty millions of dollars.Of these boats about four thousand are first-class. The Griswold powder mill at Belmont, about four miles south of this village was the scene of a terrific explosion Monday night, when about two tons of gunpowder in process of manufacture exploded, blowing the building to atoms. Another building in close proximity was set on fire and burned, entailing a heavy loss and necessitating the closing down of the works. Fortunately, no one was injured. The Belmont powder mills form one of the most successful business enterprises in this vicinity, but at the same time one of the least known. This arises from the fact that for prudential reasons visitors are rigorously excluded. The works consist of about 15 buildings, mostly situated in the ravine east of the highway at Belmont. The location seems as though designed by nature especially for a powder mill. No farm buildings are near and the ravine is so sheltered that, as was proved by Wednesday night’s accident, an explosion must necessarily be local in its effects. A dam was built across the creek nearly half a mile east of the highway, and from this raceway follows the contour of the northern side of the ravine, and brings power to the various buildings scattered along its bank. As a matter of safety, the buildings in which no dangerous work is done are situated next to the road, and as the danger in the process increases the buildings are placed farther away from the road, until those in which there is any real hazard are at a safe distance. At almost the extreme east end of the row is situated the “mixing house” and here is where the accident happened. It is in the mixers that the charcoal, sulphur and sodium nitrate of which the powder is composed, first become incorporated together and begin to be explosive.

The town of Cazenovia during the past week has cleared the underbrush on the east lake road where the highway takes in the lakefront. It is between the Hoffman property and where the old James Barrett house use to stand, directly opposite the watering trough. The improvements also are to include a gravel roadway. In the circle around the watering trough where cars may be turned around or parked by owners who wish to picnic on the lakeshore. An open ditch has been converted into a covered sluiceway and graded over the top. The property has been greatly improved and the public is invited to make us of it. Included is a most excellent bathing beach. Probably few people knew that the town owned this property which never before has been utilized. The town board thought it proper that the property be improved and opened to the public.

SKANEATELES - JORDAN - ELBRIDGE - MARCELLUS - CAMILLUS

Ann Ferro I’ve forgotten. I should add that she is younger than me and much thinner. And this year, with the help of my spouse, meaning he does all the work, I attempted to re-invigorate the garden with Shasta daisies, catmint, pink bee balm, lavender, thyme, salvia, lambs ears, coral bells, and as an ode to my grandmother and the memories of childhood by her side in her garden, three lovely holly hocks. I also fell deeply in love with an exquisite rust colored coleus and red fountain grass. The hoses on both sides of the house are too heavy for me, so the spouse is now the grand poobah of watering. I keep telling him that I, the brown thumb gardener, am teaching him how to garden. I also have a fence that needs painting. When I think of my new garden and the hours of driving and planting from my sister and the very hard work that my husband contributed, it has become clear that this garden is something more than its plants, as beautiful as they may be. While we bought Miracle Grow soil to counteract whatever may have been in the existing dirt, this garden was nourished with the powerful caring of my family, helping me to have what is important to me, but beyond my physical reach. Finding now, as I wander through my garden, ministering as I can, that this garden is grown with love made tangible, a testament to what true family gardening prowess means. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

OPINION

Cornell in the community: Centennial Soil – Mosher Farms As far back as Corey Mosher’s family can remember, his ancestors have always been farmers. Census records from the mid-1800s show the Mosher family as occupational farmers; however, they did not yet own land. One of Corey’s forefathers, George Mosher, lived in Eaton, NY and worked on a dairy farm located where the Mosher farm stands today in Bouckville. The family who owned that dairy had taken George in as one of their own, and when they were ready to hand over ownership of the farm, George took over the business. The year was about 1920, and these are the first origins of the farm under the Mosher name. So while Mosher Farms may “only” be 102 years old, farming has existed on their plot of land much longer. The Mosher family continued milking cows until Corey’s great-grandfather chose to steer the farm in a new direction in the 1930s, a time when many farms in the dairy industry were beginning to struggle. Corey remembers a photo of his great-grandmother Kate, sitting at a table by the road selling beans out of a peach basket. He remarked, “Since then it’s been fresh

market fruits and vegetables basically. I wouldn’t say the farm that we are today had its origin story there, but a lot of the things that were kind of thought about back then again, that that kind of access to the farm, right at that point, like the direct marketing started there.” Over time the production at Mosher Farms has continued to shift while still staying within the realm of fresh fruits and vegetables. Today, their largest crops are cranberry beans; however, that has changed historically as distribution partnerships have changed. Over time, Mosher’s relationships have developed and faded with distributors such as Seneca Foods, Hunts Point Cooperative Market in the Bronx, and factories such as the Norwich sauerkraut factory Rea-D-Pack Foods Inc., which closed in 2008. Corey says that one of the most important aspects of being a vegetable grower is being flexible and reactive to products for which people have a high demand. However, as vegetable growers, other factors have the potential to get in the way of that flexibility, most notably the dynamic nature of labor. Corey notes that while Moshers has mechanized over the past few decades, like the rest of the vegetable industry, a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables still require a lot of manual work to ensure

To the editor: The Cazenovia Rowing Club held it’s annual 4th of July pancake breakfast fundraiser on Monday, the first since 2019, at Lakeland Park. What a thrill it was for us to not only be able to host the event, but to have it be such a smashing success! We estimate that about 250 people joined us under the tent - it was wonderful for us to see so many familiar faces and to have so many in the community welcome us back as part of the Independence Day festivities! The outpouring of support meant a great deal to us. For two years due to COVID-19, we were forced to have a drastically limited rowing program and were unable to hold Learn-to-Row programs. We then suffered devastating damage during the massive storm last June, losing several boats, our shed, and a great deal of equipment. It’s been tough. But seeing so many friends and neighbors who support us and want the CRC to thrive was extremely meaningful to us.= We also want to thank the many Cazarea businesses that offered us support, several for the first time: The Brae Loch Inn, The Brewster Inn, 20|East, Berkshire Hathaway, Cazenovia Artisans, Cazenovia Tops, Cazenovia McDonald’s, Farmstead 1868, Eye Love, Meier’s Creek Brewing, Liz Lurie Pottery, and Wegmans DeWitt. The generosity of donations of gift cards, raffle items, and food and paper products is extremely appreciated. Cazenovia is a wonderful community of generous and loving people. We are so grateful to be a part of Caz, and to share this beautiful lake with you. The CRC Board and Pancake Breakfast Committee Cazenovia

Can’t be refuted To the editor: Mr. President,

I am convinced most of the social media (TV, internet, newspapers) are using their influential powers to turn our country into a secular humanistic nation by promoting only political leaders of their

own ilk, and pushing their own agenda to American voters. Factually, history has shown all nations embracing secular humanism fall into decay. In order to combat their huge powers in this election, I urge you to make a speech to Americans similar to the one offered below. “As your President, I believe it is imperative to tell all Americans of the extremely important issue omitted from the Presidential debates. It is the issue of freedom of religion and our nation’s relationship with our Creator. I believe a vast majority of Americans believe, as did our Founders, that we all have been created equal by our Creator and that we are endowed by Him--not Government--with our inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Presently, there is a huge difference between my Republican administration and the Democratic leadership regarding this issue. They prefer keeping religion faiths completely out of the public domain. Contrarily, we believe the importance of religious faiths should be kept throughout all aspects of our lives. To that end, and if reelected, I will propose a clarification to our Constitution’s First Amendment. It will clearly state there shall always be a separation of organized Church and State, but never a separation of Creator and State. It is the very essence of freedom of religion. This election will determine the direction of our country. Will we begin distancing ourselves from our Creator by moving toward secular socialism or will we remain a free enterprise republic fully embracing freedom of religion? The answer comes from you, the voters. I pray that you choose freedom of religion. My thanks to all of you for allowing me to serve you as President the past four years. I ask God to forever continue blessing our great country.” It’s my belief the above message can never be successfully rebutted by the secular socialists of either party and the social media. the products’ quality. “It’s not the most desirable work,” Corey said. “I can tell you when I was in high school the thought of me coming to the farm, 30 years down the road, I would have been like, I failed, which I don’t feel like that at all today, right? That’s the challenge a lot of times with farm work.” To tackle these challenges posed by labor, Corey explained how the makeup of the farm’s crews has shifted over time, with Moshers employing both local kids and seasonal migrant workers at different times. This trend is all part of the dynamism that Moshers emphasizes in their philosophy. Being dynamic with the labor that Moshers

Corey also says that he learned a lot more about the perspective of the migrant workers, many of whom hail from Guatemala a few years ago, during a conversation with one of the pickers. “I asked him, ‘Why risk it and come up here? Tell me about home,’” Corey recalled. “And what he said was, ‘Corey, I can pick strawberries in Guatemala all day and make four dollars a day. I can do the same thing just in a different location and make so much more money that I can actually provide a better life for my kids down the road.’ Mosher Farms l Page 11

Mosher Farm From page 7

And that always stuck with me.” Corey also emphasizes the importance of advancement within a farm that employs migrant workers, a group he recognizes is primed for exploitation in the wrong circumstances. He explained, “If they’ve done so much work on our farm, and we’re not putting them in higher management positions to be successful, then we are exploiting, we’re just kind of keeping them down. And you have to elevate workers after so much time and effort has been put in, but it can be really hard.” It’s a give and take in terms of autonomy, advancement, and giving credit to the workers who understand agronomy as well as anyone. Historically, to face some of the many challenges the farm faced, the Moshers would turn to Cornell Coopera-

tive Extension. Corey recounted, “For years, my uncle would tell me, Extension was the first call. You didn’t have to have crop consultants, becauseyou’re always just one phone call away from an extension agent that you know really well. That there was a handin-hand mentality on your farm, and then he would get you the resources or get you connected.” However, Corey noticed a worrying shift over the past few decades as Extension and other Agricultural support institutions became one or even two steps removed from the farmers themselves. So when Corey was invited to join the board and later become the chair of CCE Madison’s Board, he sought to further that direct connection with farmers in the hopes that farms across the county would be able to look to Extension to get the support they needed once again. “I mean, that’s the mission of Exten-

PENNY SAVER

sion. This is what Extension is about, it’s to be that first call.” Corey said. “Abraham Lincoln was a champion of agriculture and he developed the land grant model to make sure that as we developed and we had those really elite people that could attend university, that that wasn’t being siloed off, that it was going to be available to the vast majority of people. And those were farmers.” These are but some of the challenges faced by a farm operating in Madison County for over 100 years. However, there have also been many successes, and the Mosher family has a bright outlook on the farm’s future and continues to bring an aspect of dynamism into all parts of their business. Diversification, Corey explained, is critical. “Usually it’s the case where one segment of our farm is doing well, we have other segments that maybe aren’t performing as well. And so we can be more dynamic and function kind of with less risk

because that will maintain us in the future. You have to have a diverse farm. Now, you can get overextended easily and you have to be cognizant of that too.” As Corey sees it, the end goal is a stable market where the farm can lean on its more established segments for consistent income and expand into and explore emerging markets that usually carry a higher risk level. Size is another factor that can be highly fluid in farming. As the farm has been passed down through generations, it has grown and shrunk, and this is another place where Corey emphasized dynamism. “We have a rule on our farm,” he explained. “You can always come back, you always have a home, but you have to get out. You have to leave; you have to go to college or go experience other things, preferably out of state, you always have a home to come back to but you have to go experience now.”

field at a local farm and at a state park, where he worked his way up from cleaning bathrooms to becoming a park ranger.

Greatest accomplishments

Wheeler said his greatest professional accomplishment has been being able to positively impact and mentor young people throughout his 25 years of teaching and coaching. His greatest personal accomplishment has been raising his four girls, the youngest of which will begin her senior year of high school this fall. For Wheeler, another great source of fulfillment has been serving as a foster parent. “I still see kids that we’ve fostered out and about in the community, and [it’s nice] to know that you maybe helped those kids through tough times,” he said. Regarding his greatest professional accomplishment, Bergh pointed to becoming president of Cazenovia College. “It’s quite an honor and a privilege to be charged with stewardship of such an important institution — important to so many generations of [students and alumni] but also to the community,” he said. “That’s a distinct honor.” Bergh said the greatest accomplishment of his personal life has been marrying his wife.

Something that hasn’t gone as planned

In response to the prompt, Wheeler expressed that rather than fixate on and lament past mistakes, he prefers to learn from his failures. He went on to say that the greatest challenge he continually faces is wanting to accomplish more than is possible in a day. “You want to be the best husband you can be, you want to be the best parent you can be, you want to be the best teacher you can be, the best mayor you can be, and, at the end of every day, [I] feel like I didn’t do any of those things as well as I wanted to,” Wheeler

said. “So, it’s not any one single [failure], but it’s just this constant nagging, wishing there were 28 hours in every day.” Bergh began by noting that he believes it’s important to talk about failure, because it’s an important part of life and growing. He then shared a story about losing out on a job opportunity. While he was working at another institution, a mentor nominated him to participate in a national program for individuals who might consider a college presidency in their future. Although Bergh was not dead set on becoming a president at the time, he participated in the program for the experience and professional development. After working at that institution for nearly two decades and becoming invested in the community and the future of the college, he had the opportunity to apply for the presidency. Ultimately, he lost out on the job. “It was an incredible disappointment,” he said. “I quickly came to see afterwards how it just, for many reasons, was not the right time or the right place, and that things do often work out for the best in the long-term. At the time, at least, it felt like a real blow, and it felt like a real personal blow, because I was an internal candidate. . . It was not personal by any means, but it kind of stung in that regard. . . I think that that made me a better person, going through that experience.”

Advice to others

Wheeler defined success as being part of something bigger than oneself and having positive human relationships. Bergh stated that, in his career specifically, the thing that makes him feel successful is knowing that he and his colleagues are making progress towards their major goals and steering the college in the right direction. “It can sometimes feel like two steps forward, one step back, but I think progress is often success in my book,” he said.

Wheeler spoke of a teacher who served as his mentor while student teaching outside Boston. Although the teacher was already 32 years into his career, he continued to connect with his students on a personal level and reinvent his lessons and teaching methods. Bergh recognized Habitat for Humanity Founder Millard Fuller for his ability to come up with an idea, invest himself in it fully, and then develop a model that has now been replicated hundreds of thousands of times.

Definition of success

Wheeler advised everyone to find a job that they love doing. “You need to have enough money in life to take care of the necessities, but no one, I think, ever is on their deathbed wishing they made more money or wishing they’d spent more time at the office,” Wheeler said. Bergh’s advice was to keep showing up, to keep learning, and to stay curious. He added that he believes the desire to keep learning often leads people to their true passions. “If it’s not readily apparent what you want to do with your life or what your interests are, just keep exploring, keep traveling, keep reading, and you’ll start to find some themes emerge naturally,” he said.

Best advice ever received

Wheeler shared advice he was given by one of his mentors, Cazenovia resident Bob Hood, who has repeatedly encouraged him to take care of family first. Bergh recited the following quote: “Everything is important, nothing is really important.” The message, he explained, is that every job, role, and act of kindness has value and importance, no matter how mundane or insignificant it may seem. The second part of the quote, he said, is a reminder to keep things in perspective, to control only what can be controlled, and to let the other things go.

Most innovative person they’ve ever met

Books everyone should read

Wheeler, who identifies as a person of faith, first listed the Bible. His second selection was “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand. “It’s all about the sanctity of the individual

and the importance of liberty,” Wheeler said of the novel. Bergh recommended three historical nonfiction books: “Grant,” a biography of Ulysses S. Grant by Ron Chernow; “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin; and Goodwin’s “No Ordinary Time: Franklin & Eleanor Roosevelt, The Home Front in World War II.” He also listed his favorite novel, “The Secret History” by Donna Tartt.

Keys to an economically vibrant Cazenovia

According to Wheeler, ensuring an economically vibrant future will require both collaboration and innovation. As examples of collaboration, the mayor pointed to his productive working relationship and regular communication with Bergh, as well as the work of the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association, which is an independent, non-profit community-based organization formed to assist local organizations, governments, and residents by helping them accomplish goals and objectives through consensus building, cooperative efforts, grant writing, etc. Wheeler also discussed the importance of maintaining the natural and historic qualities of the village, while also making it more attractive to young families. “That’s kind of what drives me, thinking about if I was 30 years old and moving here with my family, what would make it attractive?” Wheeler said. Bergh similarly commended the Cazenovia area for its dedication to preservation but also noted that he believes part of the challenge moving forward will be navigating how to continue down that path while also embracing change and making the community more welcoming and hospitable to young people and a more diverse population. Following the Q&A session, Wheeler and Bergh invited questions and comments from the audience. Much of the conversation focused on ways residents can individually work to help make the community more inviting and accepting. After serving multiple assignments, he retired in 2014 as the chief, information dominance and chief information officer for the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force. Upon retiring, Basla returned to Central New York with the goal of helping to grow the local economy, create jobs, and give back to veterans. Basla described the experience as overwhelming and a great honor. “I was celebrating a birthday and was told we were headed to my mom’s house for a family barbeque,” Basla said. “Unbeknownst to me, there were 140 guests l

Eagle News • CNY’s Community News Source invited, many from Cazenovia, who showed up to help celebrate the humbling honor bestowed on me [by] naming the street I grew up on Lt. Gen. Michael J. Basla Way.” During the ceremony, Salina Town Supervisor Nick Paro announced that David Carnie, 4th Ward Councilor of the Town of Salina, was responsible for bringing the street dedication idea to the Salina Town Board. “I thought it was actually a fantastic idea, and this year we were able to get it done,” said Paro. To bring the idea to fruition, the board adopted a resolution acknowledging Basla’s military service and officially co-naming the street in his honor. Following Paro’s introduction, Carnie read the resolution aloud and presented it to Basla. The resolution begins by explaining that the Town of Salina has an interest in recognizing former and current town residents who have achieved extraordinary accomplishments and performed extraordinary duties in the field of military service. It goes on to list several of Basla’s achievements, including his service in

numerous operational communications units, including as Director for C4 Systems, Joint Task Force Southwest Asia in Saudi Arabia, where he delivered integrated network operations in support of United Nations security resolution enforcement against Iraq. The resolution also highlights his role as Vice Commander of Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado, where he assisted the commander in organizing, equipping, training, and maintaining mission-ready space and cyberspace forces and capabilities for North American Aerospace Defense Command. Basla said he is also proud to have served on the Pentagon staff multiple times, including during 9/11, and to have led an effort at the request of President Obama to develop a national policy to allow media filming of dignified transfer operations of fallen service members’ remains at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware. “I felt very blessed that I got a chance to serve our nation and [tackle] the different challenges that were thrown my way,” said Basla. “You don’t do that by yourself. You get so much help from the folks that lead you, from the folks you

lead, the ones that support you. Nothing that I did I could have done by myself.” Following the dedication, the celebration of Basla’s achievements continued with a party at his mother’s house. “My parents built [this house], and it even goes back further,” said Basla’s sister, Melanie Basla Elphand, who lives in the house with her mother. “My mom’s mother owned the lots, so she gave her kids the different lots to build their houses on. My grandmother, who died when I was young, used to farm all these lands.” According to Elphand, the party was organized by Basla’s niece Marissa and featured a food truck, offerings from Madison County Distillery, and a big circus-like tent. “It was like how it was when we were growing up,” said Elphand. “When we were growing up, this house was always full of people. My mom is 94, and she was able to come out in a wheelchair. . . I thought it was very, very special that she was able to be there.” To learn more about Basla’s military career, visit af.mil/About-Us/Biographies/ Display/Article/104624/michael-j-basla/.
