DDE spreads its wings with final art project By Meghan Piper Liverpool School Information Officer

Liverpool Schools

With the help of Willow Field Elementary retired art teacher Deb Walsh, Donlin Drive Elementary art teacher Patricia Bangson and DDE students, staff and families created a ceramic mural.

Donlin Drive Elementary students, staff and families recently completed one last art installation as a kindergarten through sixth-grade community. As part of the Liverpool Central School District’s Education 2020 initiative, DDE will be reconfigured as a K-2 school this fall. To commemorate the end of an era, DDE art teacher Patricia Bangson wanted as many community members as possible to leave a piece of themselves behind as they spread their wings for new adventures. With the help of Willow Field Elementary retired art teacher Deb Walsh, the school was able to create an interactive ceramic mural made up of nearly 600 individual pieces.

Participants were asked to decorate a feather that showcased what DDE has meant to them over the years. The mural took approximately one week to build, one week to glaze and one week to install in the corridor between the main office and the cafeteria. The finished product formed a colorful set of wings with the words “We give our children roots to grow and wings to soar.” “It’s what we do here at Donlin Drive,” Bangson said. “We get kids ready for the future.” Upon its completion, DDE students and staff happily posed for pictures in front of the mural. A postcard of each photo was sent home as a keepsake. “They know exactly where their piece is,” Bangson noted. “They are proud of it and are excited to be a part of it.”

Clay Historical Association to American High celebrates fifth anniversary host Fulton author Aug. 21 By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer

Fulton author Jim Farfaglia, shown here at a book reading in 2015, will present on several local history topics at the Aug. 21 open house of the Clay Historical Association. Local history author Jim Farfaglia will present a program about his various book topics at the Clay Historical Association’s monthly open house. The event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21, at Clay Historical Park (4939 Route 31, Clay). Farfaglia’s books have covered memorable events such as the Blizzard of ’66 and its impact on Central New York; the Nestlé factory in Fulton, for decades the largest chocolate-making facility in North America; the muck farms of Oswego County, one of the few places in the world where this organic-rich method of farming takes place; and the Oswego County Search and Rescue Team, the first professional volunteer search team in the Eastern United States. “I select topics for my books that are not only unique to Central New York but will also evoke rich memories,” said Farfaglia, a resident of Ful-

ton. “In the case of the Blizzard of ’66, I interviewed 200 people who managed their way through the storm. With the Nestlé book, I talked to workers from every department that produced the one million pounds of product produced daily during the factory’s heyday. I research my books’ topics for accuracy, of course, but equally important to me is to hear from those who know my subject firsthand.” Farfaglia illustrates his books with photographs that also tell a topic’s story. During his Clay Historical Association presentation he will share a slideshow showcasing the blizzard’s impact, the art of chocolate-making, search and rescue team efforts and farming on muck land. The program will also include the opportunity for questions and comments from the audience. “I look forward to spending time with the Clay Historical Clay l Page 15

After postponing its summer film festival, the American High film company instead scheduled a fifth anniversary celebration for the same weekend. Axelle Azoulay, who was codirector of the film fest, is now directing the outdoor birthday party scheduled for all-day Saturday, Aug. 20, on the baseball field behind the American High building at 800 Fourth St. “The event will include many outdoor fun activities, games, local food trucks and of course the option to dunk American High executives and others,” Azoulay wrote in a recent email. “The outdoor field day will be followed by a screening of one of our films in our auditorium, including a Q&A.” Tours of the company’s Academy at Syracuse Studios will be conducted throughout the day. American High is expected to shoot another comedy here this summer, but has yet to release details about the film or its stars.

purchased in 2017, includes sixplus acres of land along with the former Liverpool High School building, constructed in 1929. Israeli-born actor/producer Azoulay is co-directing the Aug. 20 event along with Ana Olano, who has worked as an assistant to CEO Garelick. “While the primary goal of the event is American High’s fifth birthday and a big celebration and show of appreciation of our community, it will also function as a fundraiser for our first film festival which is now set for August 2023,” Azoulay wrote. All village residents are invited to attend the free-admission anniversary festival on Aug. 20.

Brewerton Branch planning adventures for all ages By Alexander Schulz NOPL Communications Intern

Summer expeditions are ready to be found at the Northern Onondaga Public Library (NOPL) at Brewerton. Throughout the month of July, the Brewerton Branch will be hosting a scavenger hunt. The hunt will take participants throughout Brewerton. “It’s meant to be a fun way to encourage people to explore the community,” said Brewerton Branch Manager Alissa Borelli. “We’d love to hear about what they’ve discovered that they didn’t know about.” Some of the prompts for the scavenger hunt include visiting a marina in Brewerton and the Arrowhead Lodge. Participants are encouraged to share pictures of their scavenger hunt adventures on social media and tag the library with @noplibrary. To participate in the scavenger hunt, patrons should stop by the Brewerton Branch to pick up the community scavenger hunt sheet. Once a scavenger hunt is completed, bring the sheet back to the library to win prizes such as candy, ice cream sundae cups and more. Starting in August, the Brewerton Branch will also be giving out a puzzle about Brew-

erton. The questions all pertain to “a current location in Brewerton that used to have a different function.” “If you need help,” reads the puzzle sheet, “on the back side is a word scramble that contains the answer.” Those who complete the puzzle will receive a prize when they return the sheet to the library at any point during the month of August. NOPL at Brewerton also has summer activities aimed towards kids. Each Thursday in July, patrons can pick up a Fairy Tale Detective mystery kit at the library. The Fairy Tale Detective mystery kits include clues and photos to help solve the mystery each week. All of the puzzles are themed around classic fairy tales such as Rumpelstiltskin and Cinderella. Kids can solve the mysteries on their own or with their families. Each kit is nonsequential, so kids can jump in on the fun at any time. Additionally, if someone misses a week, they can always go back and solve the previous week’s kit. One week’s mystery was the thrilling theft of the Evil Stepmother’s pet, with suspects including Cruella de Vil and Maleficent. For solving the puzzles, kids will win a Disneythemed treat bag, which includes silly straws,

community can thrive but we must prioritize public safety and get a handle on the endemic gun crime. I value the work of these community partners and will continue to support their efforts to help kids and stop the violence.” Mannion’s grant awards are: Center for Court Innovation: $20,000 OG’s Against Violence Inc: $10,000 Syracuse Model Neighborhood Facility Inc: $10,000 City of Syracuse Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence: $10,000

Grilling season

While many Central New Yorkers would contend that winter is no reason not to cook outside on the grill, for many summer is the traditional season when it comes to grilling and other forms of outdoor cooking. Whether it is burgers and hotdogs, smoking ribs or brisket for hours, whipping up a more complicated dish or cooking up seafood, vegetarian options like Portobello mushrooms or newer meatless alternatives, many would agree there is just something about food that has been cooked on the grill. There is a flavor that many look forward to enjoying during these long summer days spent with friends and family enjoying an afternoon or evening outside relaxing and sharing good food together. But whether it is a high end outdoor kitchen arrangement, a gas grill, charcoal or even roasting some hot dogs and marshmallows over a fire, it is important to keep certain safety measures in mind. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, some 5,700 grill fires take place on residential properties every year. Most are caused by malfunctioning gas grills. These fires cause an average of $37 million in damage annually to properties, structures, and possessions, including gazebos, sheds, and lawn furniture. And thousands of people visit emergency rooms every year because they’ve burned themselves while grilling. Some basics include keeping a fully functioning fire extinguisher close by and making sure you know how to use it in the event it is needed. It is also good to get into the habit of keeping your grill or other cooking surfaces clean. The build up of grease and fat can cause flare ups that might not only ruin your food but may lead to a potentially more serious fire. It is also important to remember to grill in a well ventilated area. The potential for carbon monoxide to build up, particularly with charcoal, can pose a potential health risk. AAA has shared a number of other tips to help ensure you and your guests are safe when cooking outdoors. Before grilling, read and follow the owner’s manual. Place your grill at least 10 feet away from walls and deck railings to prevent fires from igniting buildings. Keep your grill away from decorations, such as hanging plants and umbrellas. Never leave a lit grill unattended. If the flame on your grill goes out, turn the grill and gas off. Wait at least 15 minutes before relighting and always make sure your grill lid is open before igniting. Maintenance and storage are also important considerations. When setting up at the start of grilling season, check grill hoses for cracks, holes, and blockages. Blockages caused by food drippings or insects can be cleared with a wire or pipe cleaner. Run a soap solution – one part liquid soap, one part water – along hoses and at connections. If the solution bubbles, then there is a gas leak that needs repair. Store propane tanks outside and away from your home. Always check to ensure that valves are turned off. AAA also recommends being aware of what is covered by insurance should a property owner have an accident. Following the tips above may help prevent a grill fire from spreading to your home, but if a fire does occur, a standard homeowner’s policy typically covers the following: Damage to the primary residence; Damage to personal possessions, such as tables or lawn chairs; Damage to insured structures on your property, such as sheds or gazebos; and Injuries to a guest, under the liability portion of the policy. By taking a few minutes to ensure you and your grill are being as safe as possible, it will help to make sure you and your guests can enjoy your time together enjoying good company and good food this summer.

Garden of love Two years ago, a good part of my garden disappeared. I come from a long line of gardening greatness. My mother? She had tour de force gardens filled with an astonishing variety of perennials. Some she bought, and some she acquired by asking complete strangers if she could have a piece of a particular plant in their gardens. You cannot believe how horrifying it was to have your mother pull into someone’s driveway, knock on the door and ask for a piece of a plant she had spied from the road. Oddly, most people would say, “of course,” help her gather the cutting and then become engaged in a lively conversation about gardening while I slumped down in the car hoping that no one I knew could see me. That is how she acquired so many beautiful flowers. I do think that she had some kind of special aura about her that inveigled people to share plants and that gave her an almost mystical power to hang this summer’s geraniums upside down in the basement during the winter, replant them in the spring and have them grow. Who does that? Certainly not me. When I tried it, my geraniums all became a soggy decomposing messes. My garden, which can be described as eclectic, meaning that without the invasive plants and a few perennials sprinkled

here and there, would be weeds. I paid my grandsons two cents a plant to remove black walnut seedlings. They made over five dollars for that job and even more when I paid them to identify and pull-out goldenrod. If I had to pay them to remove the Bishop’s weed, gill over the ground and ivy, I would be broke. But, two years ago, a good portion of my weedy overgrown garden just disappeared into a mass of vegetal corpses. The delphiniums, foxglove, cimicifuga, meadowsweet, astilbe, rhubarb and echinacea literally collapsed. Across the lawn, the five-foot-tall peppermint developed some kind of disease and passed on, leaving very ugly skeletons. What kills mint? I loved that mint. When you walked past, its scent would wonderfully attach itself to your clothing. When you mowed the escaped offspring of the mint, the yard smelled glorious. A gift from a colleague and friend, it had lived on the south side of our house across from the autumn-flowering Hostas for 20 years. No one seemed to know what vectors were involved in this mass carnage. On the advice of my sister who inherited the family’s green thumb - she is a bona fide Master Gardener - we removed all dead or dying plants and watched to see if anything would grow in the blighted areas.

Ajuga and lamium grew with punctuations of celandine. These grew riotously — everywhere. Whatever had slain my lovely taller perennials didn’t seem to affect them. But who has a garden of only ajuga and lamium and celandine? While I dreamed of a new garden, reminiscent of English gardens full of tall flowering lovelies, replanting anything that required digging was problematic. My physical limitations made it awkward. I had a tendency to fall over when using the spade … which means that I couldn’t use my right foot to push the spade into the soil without falling … so inconvenient….and so my dream garden remained only that. All was not lost. The next summer, my sister Joan, the Master Gardener, herself with a mending broken leg, drove four hours from her own beautiful gardens in Putnam County with boxes of plants to put in the nowempty areas. She brought all kinds of goodies, echinacea, black eyed susans, coreopsis, portulacas and others that I’ve forgotten. I should add that she is younger than me and much thinner. And this year, with the help of my spouse, meaning he does all the work, I attempted to re-invigorate the garden with Shasta daisies, catmint, pink bee balm, lavender, thyme, salvia, lambs ears, coral bells, and as an ode to my grandmother and the memories

of childhood by her side in her garden, three lovely holly hocks. I also fell deeply in love with an exquisite rust colored coleus and red fountain grass. The hoses on both sides of the house are too heavy for me, so the spouse is now the grand poobah of watering. I keep telling him that I, the brown thumb gardener, am teaching him how to garden. I also have a fence that needs painting. When I think of my new garden and the hours of driving and planting from my sister and the very hard work that my husband contributed, it has become clear that this garden is something more than its plants, as beautiful as they may be. While we bought Miracle Grow soil to counteract whatever may have been in the existing dirt, this garden was nourished with the powerful caring of my family, helping me to have what is important to me, but beyond my physical reach. Finding now, as I wander through my garden, ministering as I can, that this garden is grown with love made tangible, a testament to what true family gardening prowess means. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Neighbors rattled by heavy metal sound levels

A

fter a series of heavy metal concerts performed on an outdoor stage at Sharkey’s Bar & Grill, neighbors are making some noise of their own. “The outdoor concerts at Sharkey’s on Route 57/Oswego Road are so loud that we can’t have our windows open on these summer nights they are playing,” wrote Holly Pratt on July 10 on Nextdoor.com. “The volume is so high even in the village that it keeps children and adults awake, and it goes on late.” The night before, Pratt and her neighbors had been “entertained” by a post-grunge rock quartet from British Columbia named Theory of a Dead Man. It wasn’t the first time it happened. The cacophony seems continuous. Village resident Ali Brooks pointed out that on June 18, Sharkey’s hosted an all-day heavy metal concert. The show was headlined by Bay Area thrash group Exodus and also featured metal bands such as Voivod, Carnivore A.D., Municipal Waste and Bewitcher.

“I could hear it, and I’m on Second Street,’ Brooks wrote on Nextdoor. “I heard so many Fbombs in one day and was wonder-

ing what people that lived closer thought about it. It ended at 10:30 p.m. I’m all for people having a good Russ Tarby time and I personally love live outdoors music, but heavy metal isn’t my thing and it was super loud.” Pratt, who lives near Liverpool Fire Department Station One, said “every one of the concerts lately has been loud enough to be disturbing. It just seems inconsiderate since their audience is right there and they don’t have to be that loud to be heard. It’s not like they’re in a giant stadium. It might be one thing until 8 p.m. but 11 p.m. is just inconsiderate.” And the noise doesn’t end when the music stops. “After the concerts a lot of loud motorcycles and cars rev their engines and run down the road way too fast,” Pratt attested. But other neighbors are more understanding. For instance, Suzanne Spencer wrote, “I barely heard it. It was in the background faintly near the fire station. I think it is all about being considerate both ways and people also should appreciate the local business. When they have the heavy metal bands play they need the volume down some. Tolerance, kindness and work together to have a better community.”

Noise ordinances?

Never the less, Holly Pratt poses one clear question: “Is there no noise ordinance that governs them?” A glance at the town of Clay Municipal Code reveals that there are, in fact, maximum decibel levels stipulated by ordinance. From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., limits are set at 59 db at a steady state or a transient 79 dB. From 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., limits are set at 52 dB at a steady state or a transient 72 dB. Since Sharkey’s is located within the town of Clay, those limits should apply. A fan who attended the June 18 Exodus concert measured the decibel levels on his smart phone during the performance. His device registered the sound level at more than 120 dB.

Village sound levels

In the village of Liverpool, the noise ordinance calls for similar sound levels. From 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., sound in excess of 75 dB is prohibited. From 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., the top sound level allowed is 65 dB.

Last word

“We have dealt with the noise complaints when we receive them. I don’t think we have had too many so far this year.” –Town of Clay Planning Commissioner Mark Territo

Green Corner: Pondering possessions

FROM THE MAILBAG

Proud

To the editor: I’m so proud of the residents of Skaneateles. Since we moved here in 1995, far fewer homeowners are applying chemicals to their grass. Now I only see the yellow signs of shame (the ones that say “pesticides applied”) on a small minority of yards. Homeowners used to think that the ideal lawn looked like a golf course, with an unbroken expanse of green. Now the aesthetic has changed. People want flowers growing in their grass. They are even embracing the humble dandelion. In many cases, they are ripping out turf and planting meadows. This transformation has occurred for several reasons. Lawsuits against companies like Monsanto raised awareness about the very real dangers that lawn chemicals pose to human health. People want their kids and dogs to be able to play on the grass, without worrying about exposure to harmful chemicals. The Skaneateles Lake Association started a Lake Friendly Lawn Care

Does the type of golf club you use… Really make a difference?

I believe the majority of golfers in the United States or, for that matter, around the world, believe that playing certain types of golf clubs can improve performance. The reason they believe it is because it is literally being shoved down our throats every day on the Golf Channel, in books, on the internet, from club fitters and golf instructors, and with good reason. But… do golfers really know what “golf club forgiveness” really means? Forgiveness is usually described as, “how responsive your golf club will be to any mistake you make at the moment of impact”. When we hit a perfect golf shot, we hit the ball in the center of the face of the club and the ball takes off on a straight line, with the proper height, towards our target. When we don’t hit the ball in the center of the face, the ball can go varying distances, have less spin, and end up spinning left or right out of control. Sound familiar? Ben Hogan, arguably one of the Top “10” golfers and ball strikers of all time, was once asked, “How many perfect shots do you hit during a round of golf ”? His answer was, “four, maybe five times”. If it was only one time for every eighteen shots for Ben Hogan, how many perfect shots should we, as amateur golfers, expect to hit? Many times I have played two or three rounds of golf before hitting one perfect shot. There are three important things amateur golfers should look for in a golf club: Forgiveness, Distance and Feel. If you do not have the opportunity to demo the irons you are considering buying, don’t buy them…it’s that simple! The best place to demo clubs is outside…at a golf course or driving range. If you hit balls inside, make sure there is a golf simulator that can give you feed back for Forgiveness, Distance and Feel. Every major golf club manufacturer has a variety of options available that include clubs (cavity back irons) designed to be the most forgiving for beginners, players

campaign urging people to stop using lawn chemicals and fertilizers. They are working hard with homeowners and farmers to keep the lake clean and protect our drinking water supply. Next, we learned about data showing a precipitous decline in numbers of all insects, but especially pollinators. Most people want to be part of the solution. So they are gardening to provide critical habitat and nutrients for bees and butterflies. How? By not using lawn or garden pesticides, delaying the first mow of the season to allow flowers in the grass to feed the bees, and planting native flowers in their gardens. Are you one of the unlucky few who has a neighbor still applying lawn chemicals? Talk to them and ask them why. Point out that most homeowners in Skaneateles have stopped putting chemicals on their grass. You may not change their mind, but at least they will know that you are opposed to the practice. with slower swing speeds as well as for the largest segment of golfers…those with handicaps between 15-25. Other clubs (forged irons), are designed to be used by elite amateurs or PGA Tour players using a process that allows for fewer technological advancements to increase forgiveness. The forgiveness in golf irons will be much greater with cavity back irons. Overall, the forgiveness in golf irons is totally different than it was just five years ago. Golf has come a long way and you will absolutely notice how much easier it is to hit golf irons, drivers, fairway woods, hybrids, wedges and yes…even putters, than it was just a few years ago. The most “Forgiving Golf Irons for 2022”, according to Independent Golf Reviews, are: 1. Taylor Made Sim2 Max OS 2. Cobra F-Max 3. Cleveland Launcher XL 4. Cobra T-Rail Combo Set 5. Wilson Launch Pad Hopefully, you better understand what golf club forgiveness is and how it can help your game. Think of it this way, would you rather try to hit a spot on your club head the size of a “dime” or a spot the size of a “quarter”. That’s the difference between “cavity back” irons and “forged irons”. Even the best players in the world are looking for more forgiveness…shouldn’t we? And last, but certainly not least…why would you even consider buying any golf clubs without first seeking advice from one of our CNY PGA Golf Professionals or Certified Club fitters?

Early on a Tuesday evening within view of the San Gabriel Mountains, they’ll play the first Random Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 42 years Thoughts at Dodger Stadium. That’s only fitting. At a time when the sport Phil Blackwell faces all sorts of internal and existential threats, it’s good to return to a landmark setting hosted by baseball’s most important franchise. Too lofty of a label? Not if you consider all the angles of baseball history. True, Cincinnati had the first professional team in 1869 and the Reds were the first to play night games. Boston has the oldest home, Chicago’s North Side close behind in terms of sheer history. St. Louis gave birth to the farm system and heaven knows the Yankees have won the most championships. All of them pale, though, next to what the Dodgers have done, in two different locations, to alter the course of history, not just in baseball, but well beyond. The “well beyond” part applies mostly to what happened in 1947 in Brooklyn. Seventy-five years ago Jack Roosevelt Robinson endured the slings and arrows of prejudice and bigotry, foreshadowing a larger civil rights movement by nearly a decade. Not only did the Dodgers integrate, they did so at a rate far beyond others. Roy Campanella, Don Newcombe, Joe Black, Joe Gilliam – all followed in the next decade, helping to finally deliver Brooklyn its long-awaited title. But the innovations of the Dodgers went well beyond race. They wore the first batting helmets in 1941, put numbers in front of their uniforms and were part of the first baseball television broadcast in 1939. A half-century apart, the construction of Ebbets Field and Dodger Stadium provided a glimpse at much of what we see as ballpark architecture, whether it was the quirky touches of Flatbush that revived in the 1990s or the symmetrical design in L.A. that others would quickly copy in the 1960 and ‘70s – and not do nearly as well. Broadcasting, too, was where the Dodgers established a model, whether it was Red Barber’s Southern drawl or the storytelling magic of Vin Scully that, especially in Southern California, educated an entire fan base about the sport. Then it happened in Spanish thanks to Jaime Jarrin’s pioneering work. In making the move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, Walter O’Malley forever made himself a villain in the eyes of Gotham baseball fans. Someone had to bring the major leagues west, though, and O’Malley (with no small help from the Giants who went to San Francisco) established that beachhead. Maybe the game’s two most famous home runs involved Dodgers – Ralph Branca giving it up to Bobby Thomson in 1951, a limping Kirk Gibson victimizing Dennis Eckersley in 1988. And name another pitcher who tore through September (59 scoreless innings) and October the way Orel Hershiser did in ‘88. Some aspects of how the game is played had to do with the Dodgers, too. Robinson and, later, Maury Wills, brought back speed and daring to the basepaths. The dominance of Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale on a raised mound ultimately persuaded MLB to lower it after the 1968 Year of the Pitcher. Not to mention that Koufax and Drysdale, by holding out in 1966 for lots more money than they were getting, previewed the battles over players rights and free agency that Curt Flood and others would take up. From setting attendance records to setting records for the value of franchises ($1.4 billion by the current ownership group in 2012), time and again the Dodgers end up in the forefront of where baseball was going. Thus, even though their financial power matches or perhaps even eclipses that of the Yankees, the Dodgers do not evoke the kind of blind hatred and jealousy the pinstripes do, at least outside of the Bay Area and perhaps San Diego. Of course, going 32 years in between World Series titles helps garner some sympathy. Usually, when people claim that it just means more, it’s empty and full of false bravado. Not when it comes to the Dodgers, though, for whatever will take place in baseball once this All-Star Game is finished in the months and years ahead, it’s almost certain that its character will include a particular shade of blue.

As citizens on a planet of finite resources, we have an obligation to each other to preserve those resources. Alas, because they seem so abundant, our corporations and governments have done a very poor job of managing them. Instead the mantra has been to use whatever we can to create a “better life.” What is a “better life?” I think too often, we look at possessions and tastes to define “better,” without considering the human and environmental costs of those possessions. What resources do they require? How far do they have to travel for us to receive them? Is a living wage being paid to the creators of that possession? How much pollution (to air, water, the earth) was created to make the item? These are all environmental costs that need to be considered whenever we consider producing and consuming things. A prayer from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer (p. 827) describes well a healthy way of thinking about being a responsible consumer. “Almighty God,

in giving us dominion over things on earth, you made us fellow workers in your creation; Give us wisdom and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty.” I challenge us to think more intentionally about the subsequent clauses of these sentences. God did not “give us dominion over things” to use them recklessly - he made us “fellow workers.” Yes indeed there are “resources of nature” for us to use, but not so that anyone may “suffer from our abuse of them.” A wonderful guide for how we use natural resources is to adopt the Indigenous American way - consider how our use of a resource will impact the 7th generation of people beyond us - “the generations yet to come.” Here are some ways to consider the impact of your life choices on our environment: - Unplug electronics and appliances when not in use - Reduce your speed while driving - Buy local goods and products - Utilize public transportation

Meet Jasper, the mystery mutt

Submitted by Donna Newman Photo by Amy Williams Jasper has the body of a lab and the face of … we’re not sure what, but he’s very cute! He’s agile and quick, and loves to run and play. Jasper came in as a stray, so we don’t know much about him. We think he’s young — only about a year old — and he may be a retriever mix. We do know that he’s intelligent and affectionate. He loves to learn and would benefit from continued training. He weighs about 53 pounds, but he’s long-limbed and looks bigger. He may be too much for little kids, so he’d do best in a home with teenagers or adults. Jasper is just a really sweet dog and would make a wonderful addition to a loving home. For more information about adoption, call 315454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org or visit cnyspca.org.
