Creekside Gardeners seek help in beautifying village park By kate Hill Staff Writer

The Creekside Gardeners are currently seeking additional volunteers to help further their mission of beautifying Cazenovia’s Creekside Park, a unique space located below the Cazenovia Public Library parking lot. Situated along Chittenango Creek on Riverside Drive, the village park officially opened in Sept. 2019. The project was made possible through a Central New York Community Foundation grant, which was secured by the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA), and support from Project CAFÉ, Common Grounds, the Cazenovia Garden Club, the Friends of the Library, and a donation from the Ninos family. “Since then, the Village of Cazenovia has been generous with their time and resources in helping with the park’s upkeep, and community volunteers have been working to keep the space looking great for the kids, families, and community members — runners, walkers, fishermen, dog walkers, and others — who use it,” said Creekside Gardeners volunteer Wendy Everard. That inspired me to ask a few people I thought would be interested. And then we posted on social media to reach out to the community.” Everard, who was contacted by Lines last year, said she joined out of a desire to help beautify and care for Cazenovia’s public spaces. “Personally, I got involved

just out of a sense of civic pride and duty,” Everard said. Since its formation, the team has dedicated many hours to planting flowers and trees, mulching, and weeding at the park. “Our volunteer gardeners have had an enormous impact on the park,” said Village Park l Page 16

On the afternoon of Wednesday, July 20, three vehicles and four individuals were involved in a deadly car crash on Route 92 in Cazenovia. The accident, which occurred just east of West Lake Road, resulted in deaths of 69year-old Deborah Sorrentino, of Syracuse, and her 92-yearold mother, Augusta Sorrentino, of Manlius. According to a July 21 press release issued by the Madison County Sheriff ’s Office, deputies responded to the report of the crash at approximately 12:38 p.m. The deputies arrived at the scene to find a 2004 GMC Yukon overturned in the westbound lane. The driver and sole occupant, 35-year-old Justin Haines, of New Woodstock, had to be extricated from the vehicle. Deputies also observed a 2016 Ford Focus off the west shoulder of the road with heavy front end damage. Sorrentino, the driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. Augusta, who was in the passenger seat, was transported to Upstate Medical Center, where she later passed away from her injuries. The press release states that an investigation into the cause of the crash has shown that Haines’ vehicle was traveling eastbound at a high rate of speed when he passed multiple vehicles on the shoulder of the road. His vehicle then lost control and was travelling in the westbound lane when it struck Sorrentino’s vehicle head-on and overturned. The third vehicle, traveling eastbound, swerved to avoid the collision but struck Haines’ vehicle, causing damage. The driver of the third vehicle sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by paramedics and released. The sheriff ’s office was assisted on scene by the New York State Police, the Cazenovia Police Department, the Cazenovia Fire Department, the Manlius Fire Department, the Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and the Manlius and Fayetteville ambulance services. Cazenovia Chief of Police Michael Hayes said he and Officer Nick DiBrango arrived at the crash site at 12:45 p.m. Hayes directed traffic at West Lake Road and Route 92 while DiBrango assisted on the scene. “I was relieved later by Officer DiBrango and returned to the village,” Hayes said. “Officer DiBrango returned around Crash l Page 2

OBITUARIES Eugene A. Kaplan, M.D., 88

Dedicated teacher, doctor of psychiatry Eugene Alken Kaplan, M.D., of Cazenovia, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at the age of 88, after having spent meaningful time with his loved ones. Gene was born in Syracuse on Dec. 24, 1933 to David Sidney Kaplan and Florence Fleischman Kaplan. In 1960, Gene met Sandra Ecker. Eugene A. Kaplan They had an amazing 61year marriage as well as two wonderful daughters. Gene’s most unique lifelong trait was his remarkable optimism which permeated his outlook on, and approach to, everything. Also noteworthy was his predictability, which was usually charming. He wore navy blue, enjoyed eating out, loved spending time on and in the water, and never met a chocolate mousse or turkey dinner he didn’t like. Gene was dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and joy in many areas. He was an accomplished pianist, enjoyed sailing on Cazenovia Lake, and prioritized consuming excellent wines - on his own and as an enthusiastic member of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin. His incredibly wide range of interests allowed him to engage authentically with everyone. Gene enjoyed traveling especially to New York, London and Paris with Sandy, and also explored North Africa and Asia with family.

After graduating from Nottingham High School, Gene earned a B.A., magna cum laude, in 1954 from Syracuse University. He went on to earn his M.D. from the SUNY Health Science Center at the Syracuse College of Medicine in 1957. He worked as a medical intern at Albert Einstein Medical Center in New York City, and then returned to Syracuse in 1958 to complete a psychiatry residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University. This began what turned into a 60-year career at Upstate where he was employed until his passing and where he held many positions, including Director of Residency Training, Director of Undergraduate Education, Director of the Behavioral Science Program, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry, and tenured Professor. His distinguished career included numerous committee roles and honors, including the President’s Award for Excellence in Professional Services in 2015. In 2020, the American Psychiatric Association awarded him the status of Distinguished Life Fellow and for 24 years he served on the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology’s Exam Committee. In addition to his dedicated career in teaching and psychiatry, Gene served as a Commander in the United States Navy Medical Corps and the United States Navy from 1967 to 1969. Gene is survived by Sandra, his daughters Susan (Chris) Lue and Karen Kaplan, and four fantastic grandchildren, Nicole and Derek Lue, and Jaden and Taem Kaplan. A private burial at Evergreen Cemetery took place on July 20, 2022. After more than 50 years of living on the lake, Gene would have been so pleased for any donations to be made in his name to the Cazenovia Lake Association at cazlake.org to continue to preserve its beauty and health.

Babs is a pup who needs people Submitted by Donna Newman Photo by Amy Williams Anyone who has lost a beloved dog knows how painful the loss can be, but we often don’t realize how hard it is for a dog. Babs came to the shelter in February, when her owner fell ill and could no longer care for her. At that moment, she lost her home, her family, her canine companion (Stitch, who’s also at the shelter) and everything that was familiar and comfortable. Another loss she’s experienced — weight! Since she came to the shelter, she’s lost 15 pounds. Babs loves to play fetch, and she’ll bring the dog right back to you and drop it. She knows several commands — sit, down, shake, and leave it — and would love to learn more. This 8-year-old boxer mix is very affectionate and has become a staff and volunteer favorite. She would do well with respectful, school-aged kids. When you give a dog a “chance to do it all again,” they seem to know it. Are you willing to give Babs that chance? “Ladies of a certain age” don’t belong in a shelter. Once you meet her, you’ll want to make new “misty, water-colored memories” with her! For more information about adoption, call 315454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

What we can achieve

The summer of 1969 is 53 years ago now, but in the grand scheme of things, 53 years is not a great deal of time, but a lot has happened in those five decades and a great deal was achieved in the years leading up to that summer. Thinking of this particular point in time, images of events like Woodstock or anti-war protests might be the first images to come to mind. Others may look at the things taking place on a sociological level and the divide that existed at that time may seem the most obvious from a historical perspective as the country was torn over the issue of American participation in Vietnam among other issues like the civil rights movement It was a turbulent time, the culmination of a decade that saw the assassination of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert as well as Martin Luther King Jr. But in the midst of all that was taking place, there were things that, at least for a few moments, could bring the country together. July 20 marked the anniversary of the first moon landing. At least for a few fleeting moments, much of the country, if not the world, watched with its collective breath held as Neil Armstrong took those tentative steps down to the lunar surface from Apollo 11. While there is some debate about what exactly he said and how his words were transferred across hundreds of thousands of miles of space back to Earth, the intent of his words ring true. The steps he took were small for one person, but the steps represented a monumental leap for the entirety of the human race. Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin along with all the other members of the previous Apollo missions that orbited the moon and returned home, were farther away from Earth than anyone had every been or has been since. The space program was gradually taking shape with the Mercury program and by the early ’60s orbits of the planet had been completed, but the moon was still very far off. In 1962, just nine years before Armstrong took those historic steps, President Kennedy posed a challenge to the scientific community. As he noted other explorers who went before, crossing oceans, searching for new lands, climbing insurmountable heights and odds in the search for new experiences and new knowledge, Kennedy set forth an aggressive timeline for American space exploration with a goal to land and return from the moon by the end of the decade. While speaking at Rice University, Kennedy said, “But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? ... We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills; because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win ...” There was a lot of learning that had to happen along the way, a lot of creation and discovery. There were also losses as the crew of Apollo 1 lost their lives in a fire. And there would be challenges after. Most famously Apollo 13. But through this all there was incredible perseverance that continued to push forward and follow Kennedy’s mandate to seek new knowledge and climb new mountains. Looking back on that incredible moment of July 20, 1969, it was an amazing feet of human ingenuity accomplished with less computing power than the average cell phone or laptop has these days. It was because of space exploration that much of the technology, like cell phones and GPS to name a few, have come to be common place. But more than any of these creations, it represents all that we can accomplish when humans set a goal and work together to achieve even that which may seem impossible.

Everyday magic There is enchantment in the air. Not the kind of legerdemain that requires a top hat and a rabbit, but rather the kind that whispers in your ear, the scintillating magic of the everyday, that which often goes unnoticed. It creates, transforms and lifts life to other dimensions, levels of inspiration and joy. It lives among the roses that climb the side of my house, the tool shed and the fence in the yard. Among these, it is fleeting, lasting only a week or two, but leaving remembrances of glory in the rose hips that withstand the winter’s solitude. In my mind the roses are female, protected by thorns; sheltering less desired flora that crowd in safety behind the veil of the threat of bloodletting should you try to remove them. Even this, a simple product of nature is, in its way, miraculous. My driven hands, seeking out weeds, the odd over energetic maple seedling or the knowsno-boundaries lemon balm, cannot reach them when they hide among the roses. A casual walk through the village, along the creek’s edge, stopping here and there to ap-

preciate a garden, say hello to a friend, chat for a minute or two about nothing in particular is as an incantation in a life often bordered by lists and must do’s. I am renewed afterwards. Joy comes too in the soft breeze of a summer morning drifting in my window, a harbinger of diurnal delights. Magically my sleep-filled eyes are awakened to the possibilities of the day. I am here. I can do, achieve; I can enjoy what comes along and be the person I want or should be. Another day, magically, I’m given another chance. A chance to enjoy the sweet and so strong bonds of friendships, sorcery of gossip and empathy full of the allure of personal alchemy. My cats, sleeping in their spot on the bed, descended from wild predators, love me, in their cat way, and when they are not patrolling the mysterious territory that they have defined outside, they are spending hours by my side, seeking affection and giving it back ten times over. What have I done to deserve this? It must be magic. It is freeing to take the time to find the magic in the ordi-

Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library will sponsor the Eighth Annual Used Book Sale at the Library Barn Saturday, July 31 and Sunday, Aug. 1. Proceeds from the sale are presented to the library as an unrestricted gift. The first sale in 1974 consisted of a few tables of books set up in the driveway outside the library barn. Along with books the barn was used to store Red Cross loan closet equipment (hospital beds, wheelchairs and other home health care items) and unused library furniture and equipment. After a few years of ever-increasing book donations and larger book sales, it was felt that more space was needed. The Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps accepted responsibility for storage and distribution of the Red Cross equipment at CAVAC headquarters. Volunteers cleared the barn, built shelving, and brought in additional tables. Electric wiring was extended from the main building to the barn and large fluorescent fixtures installed. The additional space made it possible for the Friends to accept book donations throughout the year. Electric lighting allowed volunteers to work in the barn during the dark days of late spring and early fall. Heating (or rather lack of heating) still prohibits work during the coldest months.

Because of volunteer efforts, the rest area at the south end of Cazenovia Lake looks good. The state Dept of Transportation (DOT) was not able to mow or maintain the area for the past few years because of state budget cuts. Through the efforts of area volunteers the weeds, refuse and knee-high grass have given way to a clean and inviting area for relaxing and picnicking. In recognizing the efforts of these volunteers who undertook this endeavor through the Adopt-A-Highway project, the DOT has put up a sign bearing the name of the project and recognizing the Cazenovia Garden Club and Girl Scout Troops 294 and 339. The new sign stands at the west end of the parking area at the south end of the lake. Sandy Gunnip volunteers her Environmental Techniques crew for a weekly mowing, Saxon Harrison of Earthworks has donated his time, two flowering trees and the bed of annual flowers by the historic marker. Polly Monz dug and donated hemerocallis from her yard. Nancy Hook of Hidden Pond Perennials donated the landscape cloth.

Eleven months after a large fire claimed Cazenovia Equipment Company’s headquarters in Nelson, the new $3 million building in the town of Cazenovia was opened for business. On July 19, the evening before the official grand opening of the business’s new headquarters, located at 2 Remington Park Drive in Cazenovia, owners Mike and Jim Frazee held a ceremonious ribbon-cutting event and thanked those involved with the project. “A lot of long nights and special meetings were held so that we could get things moving. We can thank Mother Nature for a gentle winter, but the town boards really cooperated to get this project to where it is today,” Jim Frazee said. “The backbone of Cazenovia Equipment is our employees. A lot of people worked awfully hard to get us functioning.”

Ramblings from the empty nest

Ann Ferro nary, the everyday, to contemplate the beauty of the wildflower, the shadow of leaves against a building, a window box overflowing with color, young mothers and their children, a quiet corner in the library, lemonade in an icy glass or curtains billowing in a window before the storm. And as I wend my way through the days of my life, I find an exquisite enchantment in minutes watching small children discover this world, learning to recognize what we have often overlooked or forgotten. Small, daisy like flowers pepper my lawn, cut away each week by the mower, but there is a memory of my little grandson, so proud to hand me a daisy, so much excitement, an offering of discovery and love, a delight more powerful than a wizard could conjure. FROM THE MAILBAG

Solar farms

To the editor: Several months back it was reported in this paper comments I made during a town board meeting in which I appealed to the board to reconsider plans to allow the building of a solar farm across the street from my home. The article omitted my first comments to the board that first and foremost we need alternative sources of energy to try to decrease global warming. My appeal on that evening was that the town should determine proper placement for these panels rather than a corporate enterprise. I’d like to change my position. I now encourage the building of solar farms anywhere and everywhere and by whoever wishes to invest in the industry. As we hear reports of dire heat, fires raging, and crops failing, I encourage people who feel responsible for future generations, human and animal, to take a stand and demand change. I used to think that it was common instinct to care about those who will come after us. I now believe that many of us care about the here and now, our immediate radius, how much money and prestige we personally accrue right up to our own demise. As the mother of four adult children and grandmother to my two-year-old granddaughter, I encourage readers to get involved and activate for change. We need to consider alternative sources of energy for our own homes and lifestyles, demand action by our elected officials, and harness the power of the sun and wind. Pat Carmeli Cazenovia

Tremendous support

To the editor: Cazenovia Welcomes Refugees (CWR) is happy to announce that the move-in date for our New American family from Afghanistan happened on July 7, 2022. This marks the successful completion of our 43 Lincklaen Project. This could not have happened without the tremendous support CWR received from InterFaith Works of CNY, Cazenovia College, and most importantly, members of the greater Cazenovia community. We gratefully acknowledge and thank every individual who made a contribution to this effort, including those who designed the interior, monetary donors, donors of furniture, volunteer carpenters, painters, and house cleaners, the Cazenovia College Campus Services Team, students assisting with the children during walk throughs and move-in day, and all who made in-kind gifts. A special thank you to Nick Irvine and the Irvine Construction crew who worked so diligently to make the renovation a success. Local legislators visit Menorah Park Cazenovia College to hold

State Assemblywoman Pamela Hunter, and State Senators Rachel May and John Mannion visited Menorah Park of CNY Thursday, April 28, to listen to administrators and staff as they were updated on Menorah Park’s latest programs, as well as its remaining challenges. “During the pandemic, we weren’t able to host larger gatherings here on our campus,” said Mary Ellen Bloodgood, Menorah Park’s CEO. “Now with guests being vaccinated and boosted, and with nicer weather and open windows, we’re able to showcase all we’ve accomplished in the last twoplus years.” Items discussed were the strength and caring of the many employees, some of whom have been with Menorah Park over 20 years, and of the innovative ways technology was used – from family visits to tele-chaplaincy. Bloodgood outlined a few initiatives started in the last few years, such as the

Also discussed were punitive government regulations for staff shortages and resources needed for training, and Medicare reimbursement.

Cazenovia College is holding the 2022 Cazenovia College Golf Open on Monday, Aug. 8 at the Cazenovia Country Club. Alumni and friends of the college are invited to join the annual event. The cost is $125 for a single golfer, $500 for a foursome, and $25 for a dinner guest. The day starts with lunch at 11:15 a.m., followed by golf and ending with dinner. “This year we are marking the 20th Annual golf tournament,” stated Matt Karoglanian, president of Cazenovia College Alumni Association Board of Directors. “This is a great event with friends celebrating the College and just having fun.” The supporters for this year’s event include Pro-Tel as the title sponsor, Community Bank as the lead sponsor, and Common Grounds as the meal and beverage sponsor. “We are grateful for all the support and contributions to make this event possible,” added Karoglanian. The open is hosted by Cazenovia College Alumni Association Board of Directors, and proceeds raised from the tournament directly benefit Cazenovia College students through campus initiatives. To register to play at the 20th annual Golf Open go to cazenovia.edu/golf. Registration closes on Aug. 1.

From widowmaker to engaged Local man survives near-fatal heart attack By Jason Klaiber Staff Writer Gregory Wilt started his July 4 on a high note. An avid bicyclist, the 53-year-old Cazenovia resident spent the greater part of that sunny morning keeping apace with the Onondaga Cycling Club. The distance they covered was a semi-regular albeit substantial one for him: a total of 64 miles notched on a circuit from Chittenango to Rome and back. Around 11:30, with the temperature warming to 80-or-so degrees, he stopped to pick up Gatorade after the group ride and beelined home to take a shower. Upstairs at his Lincklaen Street household, he turned on the water but shut it off upon feeling lightheaded, opting instead to lie on the floor in the next room and stretch. That’s the last thing he remembers before coming to in an ambulance. In an instant, Wilt—an apparent model of fitness—had had a massive heart attack. Fortunately enough for him, however, his girlfriend Amy Farry walked in to check on him right at that very moment. “She suddenly got the idea to come upstairs and see if I wanted to go for a walk, which was very strange because I had just biked for 64 miles and it’s not something I would normal-

ly do after riding that far,” Wilt said. A registered nurse for the Cazenovia College health department, Farry immediately administered CPR, but there was no pulse. She screamed down to her son, Tommy, to run in from the backyard and call 911. Because they were gearing up for the village’s annual Fourth of July parade taking place only a block and a half away, the local first responders arrived in no time. “The guardian angels were definitely aligned with me that day,” Wilt said. While being transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital, a paramedic leaned over Wilt as he regained consciousness. Informing him of the sequence of events, he said, “You see that woman up front—your wife…she saved your life.” Wilt replied with the correction that Farry was his girlfriend and not his wife, to which the paramedic responded that she should be the latter. After a pattern of agonal breathing, bouts of confusion and three defibrillator shocks, Wilt was brought to stable condition in the cardiac clinic, where doctors applied two stents and performed an angioplasty to clear the full blockage in his left anterior descending artery. “They call that type of heart attack a widowmaker because people don’t usually survive it,” said on-the-scene paramedic Bryan Ramsay, who has been a Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC) crew member since its beginnings 48 years ago. “When one of the coronary arties is completely occluded,

it’s obviously not giving blood to the heart so it can function.” Wilt later woke up in the recovery room with some pain from the chest compressions but no broken ribs and otherwise no complaints. “Then 48 hours later I was discharged, back home and walking around town like nothing had ever happened, thankfully for that,” said Wilt, who works as a financial advisor in Manlius. Expected to make a complete recovery, he began sharing his story with clients to spread

A word to the wise… The name Dr. Brett McCabe is certainly no stranger to my articles. I have quoted him many times because of his unique, blunt style of dealing with the struggles every golfer experiences during their careers. His most recent book, “Break Free From Sucksville” is just another example of expressing his thoughts to help golfers and for that matter, competitors in all walks of life, break free from their insecurities and start winning again. He is a Sports Psychologist to professional athletes including 12 PGA and LPGA Tour players whose rankings have reached #1 in the world. Here are a few of his most recent thoughts to a variety of people who can absolutely effect the attitudes and performance of golfers: To Parents and Grandparents - If you overcoach, telling them what they did wrong every time they get in the car, you are breaking their ability to figure it out. Players who get bombarded by family members end up doubting themselves so much more than those who have freedoms to figure it out by themselves. To Coaches and Instructors - You are coaching and teaching the most important thing in your player’s/parents lives…remember that. You can be tough, demanding and fair but be transparent, open, and part of the team with family members. Adversaries never work!

Cazenovia resident Gregory Wilt lives to tell the tale of his July 4 heart attack and his July 16 proposal to Amy, his girlfriend of five and a half years.

the word about American Red Cross CPR training, the “outstanding professionalism” of Cazenovia’s first responders and the importance of heart health screenings, even for those like him with optimal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. He also decided to take that bit of advice from the back of the ambulance and propose to Amy, who he calls the kindest, most caring person he knows. Their wedding is set for next June at Owera Vineyards, the site of their very first date five and a half years ago.

To Players - Someone must tell you the truth or you will continue to believe in the wrong things. You don’t take your practice game to the competition. It doesn’t work like that. You take tools that you use to the competition. No way to take practice results into something you don’t control.

Perry Noun is the former executive director of the Northeastern NY PGA as well as a competitive amateur golfer and winner of the New York State Super Senior Amateur Championship. Perry Noun can be heard on “Tee Time With The Pronoun” on... News Radio 570 WSYR and 106.9FM.

From Dr. Brett McCabe - When things get hard in the heat of the moment, your thoughts won’t be positive. No chance. What I want to know is the theme of the negative thoughts. The theme tells me more about your insecurities and fears than the struggles in the moment. Do not assume you are the only one feeling the way you are. Trust me, you are not. From Billy Herschel, PGA Tour Player “Brett has been my Sports Psychologist for the past two years and has been a massive help. He relates your struggles and issues to examples you can easily understand and comprehend. He’s the best in the business”. Going for a walk

The kindergarten class of Mrs. M. Pierret and Mrs. K. Sellers had their “Fayetteville Walking Tour.” They rode the bus to the Fayetteville Fire & EMS for their first stop and learned about some safety tips and even had the chance to sit in the firetruck and hold the fire hose and sprinkle water. The Kindergarteners walked with their teachers and some of the volunteer parents to the Fayetteville Free library where they enjoyed some stories read by the librarian and some educational crafts. They got on the bus to Snotop for some refreshing ice cream and for their final stop they walked to the Manlius Police Department where they were able to tour and got to sit in the police car complete with the siren on and looked inside the jail cell.

From page 1 Mayor Kurt Wheeler. “It is intentionally a naturalistic space, but without their efforts, dominant and invasive species can run wild among the plantings. The park is beautiful, lush, and diverse thanks to their collective green thumb.” Wheeler added that the village maintains the structures, stone dust paths, and adjacent parking area, but the detailed and time-consuming nature of the weeding and cultivating make it difficult for village workers to keep up. “The village is incredibly grateful to the l

This summer, the volunteers have been meeting at the park to work on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. “We have seven adults regularly participating and [we] have had five to six students join us periodically,” said Lines. “. . . Our volunteers have been great about bringing plants from their own gardens and asking friends and neighbors for perennials and ground covers to fill in. Abolition Hall of Fame welcomes local author

Author Daniel Koch explained the purpose of his new book on Central New York history. “This is a history of the land where I grew up, the central part of the state of New York. It is a land of immense natural beauty and a complex past,” he said. “Some of its history is uplifting and some of it tragic. I have been captivated by the history of this land since I was a boy. My parents, grandparents, and greatgrandparents all grew up here too. Most branches of my family reach back even farther than that in this region. Some of my ancestors were Palatine Germans, the first non-Native people to settle here. Others came in the ‘Yankee invasion,’ when New England farmers flooded the region after the American Revolution. Some came in later waves of immigration. I began reading about the CNY history in my grandparents’ book collections. I became conscious of the importance of what happened here to our larger national history. But there was not a book I could find there or in any of the libraries I’ve haunted over the years that brings the story together in an accessible way. That is what I hope this book will do.” Koch’s book is the first history of a vitally important region to the history of the United States to appear since 1941. This publication shows how America was created on Indigenous land and reveals the part this region played in creating America as we know it. Written in the narrative in style, this book has a strong story-telling element running throughout. It brings to life

some fascinating characters, many of whose stories have never been told. This rigorously researched book uses many sources including Jesuit manuscripts, British and Dutch colonial documents, paintings, census data, maps, newspapers, letters, and diaries to tell the story of the land and the people who made their homes here from its earliest habitation to the present day. It examines this region’s impact on the making of America, from its strategic importance in the Revolution and Early Republic to its symbolic significance now to a nation grappling with challenges rooted deep in its history. The book shows that in Central New York – perhaps more than in any other region in the United States – the past has never remained neatly in the past. Koch grew up in Oneida. He completed a bachelor of arts in history and French at the State University of New York at Albany. He then studied for an M.St. and D.Phil. (Ph.D.) in History at the University of Oxford. Koch is currently the senior deputy head at Bedford School, England, and will become headmaster at Loughborough Grammar School in September 2022.
