Local Roots Farm on Fenner Road in Cazenovia was abuzz with visitors during Madison County Open Farm Days this past Saturday. The farm offered samples of local cheeses and meat products, horse-drawn carriage and buggy rides and the opportunity to get up close to several farm animals. Natalie, 3, of Canastota, made a new friend in this calf, while other young visitors got a swift ride on this buggy, driven by members of the Yoder family who own and operate the farm.

Beautifying Chittenango Creek Lake association, preservation foundation team up for cleanup By kate Hill Staff Writer On July 28, the Cazenovia Lake Association (CLA) and the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation coordinated a cleanup of a section of Chittenango Creek between the two dams downstream of the lake outlet. The lake dam, or upper dam, which controls the level of the lake, is located near Carpenter’s Pond. Mill Street dam (lower dam or creek dam), which was built to serve the Erie Canal system, is a little further downstream. Just east (downstream) of the lake dam, Chittenango Creek meets the water flowing out of the lake to form a single channel. According to Lauren Lines, executive director of the Cazenovia Community Development Association (CACDA), Mill Street dam was built in 1857 to control water flow upstream of the confluence of Chittenango Creek and the Old Erie Canal. Before the dam went up, the water in the area between the two dams was low, fast moving, rocky, and generally looked much like any other natural section of Chittenango Creek today. “This process significantly changed the ecosystem of this 1,000-foot section of the stream,” said Lines. Since the dam’s construction, the water level between the two Cleanup l Page 12

Laws approved, grants, events discussed Kate Hanzalik On August 1, the Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees approved two local laws — one authorizes the village to make purchases based on the best value rather than the lowest bid; another modifies an existing law so that the Department of Public Works can request the removal of illegally parked vehicles that interfere with street repairs, snow removal, and other projects. Regarding the new purchasing law, village officials and employees have historically abided by the “lowest bidder” rule where they must accept bids for goods and services based on the lowest cost. With the newly approved “best value” option, purchasers can consider other factors such as quality, durability, and efficiency. Mayor Kurt Wheeler said, “We need to look at those compounding factors and actually pick something that might be a better value for our taxpayers rather than just the lowest bid,” he said, adding that “It’s very consistent with state law.” The new law allowing public works administrators to arrange for towing and impounding vehicles addresses irregularities about when towing is legal, and it fills what Mayor Wheeler called “a specific gap in our procedures.” The law pertains specifically to illegally parked vehicles. Wheeler stated that “Obviously, we don’t ever want to tow vehicles, but if it’s a matter of public safety, sometimes it’s a necessity.”

On July 28, the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF) and the Cazenovia Lake Association (CLA) coordinated a cleanup focused on beautifying a section of Chittenango Creek between the two dams (lake dam and Mill Street dam) downstream from the lake outlet. Recently, CLA and CPF have been working with a team of partners to investigate and address some ongoing issues related to Mill Street dam. The long-term goal is to restore the stream between the dams to its natural state and appearance.

Caz Chamber to present fifth annual Block Fest weekend By Kate Hill Staff Writer

The Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce (GCACC) will present its fifth annual Caz Block Fest weekend Aug. 20-21. The community celebration will kick off on Saturday, Aug. 20, with the traditional Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Village Green, sidewalk sales, held throughout the weekend, “Shred Fest” from 1 to 3 p.m., and “Rock Fest.” Sponsored by Community Bank, N.A. to help safeguard against identity theft and fraud, Shred Fest is an opportunity for the public to have any sensitive materials shredded at no cost in the bank parking lot. During Rock Fest in Telephone Park (the lawn in front of Kinney Drugs), children will paint rocks to be sold for dona-

tions to CazCares food pantry and clothing closet. According to GCACC Executive Director Anna Marie Neuland, the event is sponsored by the Eat/Shop/Play Committee, a relatively new group made up of both GCACC members and non-members. “In the past, the chamber had a very similar committee that planned events for the downtown shopping district, such as sidewalk sales [and] ladies’ and men’s night out,” said Neuland. “This is a new and very active group that is taking over the planning and coordination of many of the events that the chamber has done in the past with our support. It is very exciting, and the chamber wants to support all of them.” Neuland added that “Shopping Passports” will also be available all weekend to coincide with the sidewalk sales. “We are only asking for donations to help support the GCACC,” said Houghton. Houghton is organizing this year’s event with a committee made up of representatives from the GCACC, Cazenovia College, the Albany Street shopping district, Community Bank, and AmeriCU Credit Union. “We were so happy [with] the turn out last year,” said Houghton. “We live in such a great community, and the chamber appreciates all the local businesses and how hard the last couple of years have been for everyone. We want people to come out and enjoy a weekend of fun events, good food, great music, and, most of all, our neighbors.” The mission of the GCACC is to benefit the local economy and enhance the community’s quality of life. Dangerous temperatures

The past few days in Central New York have offered at least a little bit of a respite from the scorching temperatures that have recently dominated our weather pattern. But even with temperatures becoming a little more tolerable there are still dangers posed under certain circumstances when temperatures are running higher in the summer months. Many of these dangers come from something we take for granted and many use on a regular basis, our vehicles. When temperatures rise outside they can increase significantly inside a vehicle even when the windows are rolled down. According to AAA of Western and Central New York, since 1998, 917 children have died from pediatric vehicular heatstroke, including at least 10 deaths already reported this year in the U.S. While an overwhelming majority of these deaths are accidental, such tragedies are often preventable. Temperatures inside of a car, even on a moderately sunny day, can rise 20 degrees in just 10 minutes. Children are particularly at risk of suffering from heatstroke since their bodies heat up five times faster than adults, according to AAA. Below are some important considerations to keeping in mind when it comes to vehicles and the heat according to AAA. Children and heat — follow these simple tips to make sure no child is left in a vehicle: Never leave a child unattended in a car, even for a minute, even if the windows are tinted or down. The same recommendation applies to pets and the elderly. Parked cars: always keep doors locked and windows closed, even when the vehicle is in a garage or on a driveway. Make sure keys are safely out of reach so children can’t enter a car to play. Make sure all children leave the vehicle when you reach your destination. Be certain no one is inadvertently left behind. When you first place a child in a car seat in the back seat of a car, also place your cell phone, purse, or important belongings back there to serve as visual reminders that a child is in the back seat as you exit the vehicle. If you see a child alone in a parked car, immediately call 9-1-1 for emergency assistance. When it comes to pets and heat, it’s best to leave them at home while running errands on hot days. Dogs can’t sweat like humans, causing them to overheat much faster. Rolling down the window does very little to keep them comfortable. There are also some considerations people should make when it comes to the upkeep of their vehicles especially as temperatures run high. Most drivers think battery problems occur primarily in winter, but summer heat can negatively impact your car’s battery even more than the bitter cold of winter. Learn more at AAA.com/Battery. Automobile engines work extra hard in the summer, and it is the cooling system’s job to protect the engine from overheating - proper cooling system maintenance is vital to keep the engine cool. Driving on under-inflated tires not only affects the handling and braking of a vehicle, it also can cause tires to overheat and increase the likelihood of a blowout. Cars need fluids during extreme heat too - drivers should check all vehicle fluids including motor oil, transmission fluid, power steering fluid and brake fluid to ensure they are filled to the appropriate levels so they know they are driving a vehicle that is as safe as possible.

standable, to label all of this as a thinning out of the competition, an excuse for more athletes to earn state championships and, more importantly, for their parents and friends to brag about it and brandish it. As usual, the truth is more complicated. In many of the classes little, if any change will be noticed, either at the sectional or state level. Some schools might get added of subtracted, but not wholesale upheavals. Also, none of this applies to football, cross country, lacrosse, field hockey or track and field. Presumably they will stay with three, four or five classes, because that’s justified by their numbers. What needs to be remembered, too, is that these were changes meeting widespread approval from sectional directors. Baseball, softball and soccer had unanimous support, and none of the others had more than three no votes among 11 sections. Besides, high school sports isn’t only about what championships are earned by some. It’s about the experiences gained, and lessons learned, by all, the kind of lessons about life and society not found in a classroom or written in an exam. True, the best athletes will add to their trophy cases and medal collections, even more so in a sixclass system than in a five-class system. Already more than 30 property owners have signed the papers agreeing to pay their share of the expense of widening the concrete pavement soon to be built through Cazenovia village. It is proposed to widen the pavement to twenty-four feet and build curbs. Such an improvement not only will beautify the village but will increase the value of the property along the route. Supervisor D. D. Norton is circulating the paper. Contractor George W. Chambers expects to commence work within a week.

Twenty-two Comets jockeyed their way across the starting line last Saturday. It was the largest turnout of the year Peter Winkelstein wasn’t one of the first across the line, but at the end of the race, he finished first by quite a comfortable margin. Paul Forster, sailing the Morrow girls’ boat was second, G. Freeborn third, followed by R. Philip Hart fourth, and John J. Hill fifth. Sunday’s race was sailed in a stiff breeze which reached squall proportions in the latter part of the race. When the squall hit, the lake was full of capsized boats, with many more bound for the shore to find safety. Some of the skippers dropped their mainsails and finished the race sailing with the jib and as they turned to come in for a landing, had to jump out to save their boat from being dashed upon rocks.

Just over the crest of a hill and around a bend the little Welsh Church comes into view east of Cazenovia just off Rt. 20. Serene in the summer dusk, light outlining the windows, strains of Rock of Ages flow from the old pump organ and out across the church yard where generations lie. It is a scene from the past, reinforced by a hostess dressed in traditional Welsh costume of a long full-skirted dress, white apron, and high-crowned wide-brimmed silk hat. History survives at the Welsh Church. Family trees are the timber of which it is built. The roots are deep. This church has seen families christened, married, and buried. Founded in 1850, the membership of the Welsh Church Congregational Society was comprised of Welsh families who settled in the area in the 1840s. At first these settlers, mostly farmers, held meetings in their homes, and in the English Presbyterian meeting house located near the present location of the Welsh Church. As membership grew, a larger church was required. In 1876 the present-day church was erected.

The project to help preserve the one-room Rippleton Schoolhouse took a big step forward Thursday as the building was separated into two parts and pulled up Route 13 to the Lorenzo State Historic Site by two large trucks. Workers proceeded until 10 p.m. Wednesday night to prepare the building for its move the next morning. A little after the scheduled departure time of 10 a.m., the trucks maneuvered their way onto Route 13 and began the journey north surrounded by onlookers and helpers. Carl Stearns, an architect with Crawford and Stearns, said obtaining the permit from the state Department of Transportation is a complicated process. A process which has to deal more with height and width than weight. In fact, he said, the trucks themselves out-weighed the trucks which were carrying them to Lorenzo. In preparation for moving, Stearns said a few of the sills had to be reinforces. But, surprisingly, he said, the large opening for the bay window was strong and didn’t require anything extra. “This is an important day for Cazenovia, and for the Lorenzo Historic Site,” Stearns said.

Sidewalk safety

To the editor: I am a 13 year old student who attends Eagle Hill Middle School. There is a safety issue for students who attend middle schools and up in the FM school district, and that is there are no sidewalks on the busy roads leading to the schools. I live half a mile from my school and there is no safe way to school because of this problem. I was riding to school on my bike a few weeks ago and crashed on the road because I hit something and was lucky to not get hit by a car. There is not a sidewalk by my school until I get to school property. There are seven streets you can enter or exit Enders Road from Glen Eagle to East Seneca Turnpike on both sides and then the sidewalks start at the edge of Glen Eagle and East Seneca Turnpike. A lot of other places in Fayetteville Manlius already have sidewalks, but not the school zones, so why not put the sidewalks in the school zones to help with the safety issues that this causes. Another reason why these sidewalks should be put in is to keep kids exercised, since people talk about getting children more in shape, but they drive their kids to school when they could walk. I went to the school board meeting about raising money for the school, and this is something they could meet about at the board meeting. I have seen kids walking down the street with large instruments such as cellos, saxophones, and bass clarinets, and they will need to stay safe by having somewhere to walk with their large instruments. According to an article I read, sidewalks reduce pedestrian crashes more than roadways do. Harrison Thayer Manlius

Voters deserve better

To the editor: In 2016, Steve Wells challenged Claudia Tenney for the Republican nod to run for Congress. Back then, it was fashionable to be an “outsider,” so Steve Wells claimed he was an outsider, despite his role as a consummate insider in NYS Republican high finance and connection-making circles (AKA “The Establishment”). He simply lied. And in 2016, it was not at all a safe bet to declare one’s preference for Donald Trump over other still viable presidential primary candidates, but Claudia told voters who she supported. Steve Wells did not. This swamp creature sprouts feathers as well as scales. And now – he’s back: obviously just as much the frightened little rabbit that he was then. He won’t debate. He won’t make his views on controversial issues known to the

electorate. He won’t express support for Donald Trump. He won’t express dissatisfaction with Trump. What we know about Steve Wells is that he is against inflation; he is for affordability; and he wants the southern border fixed. What a bold, decisive and impressive platform upon which to stand! How much confidence he instills in the public that he so obviously respects. Mr. Wells runs a vending machine business. It’s a perfect image for his approach to public life. You put in $1.25 and work the machine and get what you want out of it. Just like when he directed to have over $11,000 donated to then Gov. Andrew Cuomo and out came NY State vending contracts for the Thruway and the NY Prison system. That’s called pay-for-play, and that’s what swamp creatures do best. Voters deserve far better than this. It seems likely that Mr. Wells figures his vast personal wealth, always an elixir to a state political party willing to suffer almost any self-financed creature, can buy him a place on the ballot in a year in which many voters will just pull the lever for a Republican because Joe Biden has been such a monumental failure. But – voters beware! The candidate who is not at all candid is the same politician who will ignore you and your concerns because his real focus is always on getting re-elected and sliding his way out of the machinery, like a common $1.25 ding dong. David B. Vickers Cazenovia

Whole hearted endorsement

To the editor: I had to write this whole hearted endorsement of staff writer Kate Hill whose writing we are privileged to read weekly in the Republican. I am a full-fledged literary snob, who often, even after 100 pages of a book is likely to put the book down due to lack of style or talent, but am often forced to go on with Kate’s front page articles due to Kate’s abundance of both. I thank her for that. We are blessed to have her in our midst, enlightening us on both the common and the profound issues and events here in Cazenovia and our world. Keep it up. Adelia McGuire Cazenovia

Letter writer adds to divisiveness To the editor: The writer of the recent letter to the editor that appeared on July 20 in the Eagle Bulletin titled “Can’t be refuted” presents a strange general-

To the editor: A recent article, I’m guessing printed as submitted by the relevant organization, about a group attending Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico included some outdated and incorrect wording. The group included both youth and adult leaders of all genders who are in “Scouts BSA” – the nongender specific adventure program for all humans ages 11-17. The youth attending should correctly be referred to simply as “Scouts” with a capital S and without reference to gender. They are not Boy Scouts (or Girl Scouts [that’s a different organization]). They are simply Scouts who are part of the BSA’s Scouting program which has been open to all youth, regardless of gender, for several years now. Cazenovia, and a number of other nearby communities, is fortunate to have a place for any and every youth who wants to participate in the adventure and characterbuilding that is Scouting. ization about people he calls “secular socialists.” In labeling and devaluing this so-called group he seems to overlook the fact that those people are also included in what he suggests are “endowed by the Creator.” He also seems to forget that we live in a country that is “by the people, for the people and of the people” which happens to include people whose world view is different from his own. Furthermore, he seems to miss that our government is actually made up of people. That includes people like himself, as well as diverse other people who have integrity, care deeply about this country and see different possibilities for addressing the real problems in our country and the world. To me, it would more to the point if the writer had said that social media (TV, internet, newspapers) and politicians who promote lies, manipulate and cheat are the biggest threat to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” and if those liars are in the government and represented by the media, that certainly is a threat. Anyone who promotes a vague and devaluing generalization they call “secular socialism” or “secular humanism” is contributing to divisiveness and undermining the urgent need in this country for cooperation, compromise and collaboration to save the nation from “falling into decay.” Jackie Michel Fayetteville

OBITUARIES Jack E. Moyer, 79 Navy veteran

Jack E. Moyer, 79, of Cazenovia, passed away peacefully at home on July 24, 2022. Jack had a rich life dedicated to his family, friends, career and many hobbies. Jack proudly served in the VP-44 Pelicans Patrol Squadron of the U.S. Navy. After his service, he worked as an autobody repairman for Vertucci Chevrolet of Canastota and then as a county worker for Onondaga County for over 25 years. Jack’s hard-working spirit encouraged him to run a small engine repair shop out of his garage at his home in Georgetown after his retirement.

Those who knew Jack may remember him as a genealogy buff, a lover of history, a reader who frequented the Cazenovia library, or as a simple family man. He was a kind, patient, gentle and honest man. He loved children and was always seeking ways to help and give to others. He enjoyed playing cards with friends, taking friends and family out on his pontoon boat, and falling asleep in his recliner while watching reruns of “Gunsmoke” every evening. Jack cherished his time frequenting the golf course with his daughter, fishing with his oldest son, hunting with his middle son and going to Rome and Fulton dirt track races with his youngest. dams has been artificially regulated by either raising or lowering Mill Street dam’s sluice gates. Typically, the New York State Canal Corporation, which owns and operates both dams, leaves the sluice gates fully open from Nov. 1 through April 1. Therefore, the water level between the dams is always low during the winter.

Mill Street dam issues

Recently, CLA and CPF have been working with a team of partners to investigate and address ongoing issues related to Mill Street dam. The collaborators include the Village of Cazenovia, the Town of Cazenovia, the New York State Canal Corporation, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, CACDA, Trout Unlimited, and Jocelyn Gavitt, who is consulting through Gavitt Associates, a firm specializing in landscape architecture and community design. When the water level between the dams is high, any significant precipitation can cause the water to flow the wrong way; instead of moving downstream, it backflows over the lake dam and into the lake, carrying with it significant amounts of sediment and pollutants. According to Lake Health Committee Member Bob Crichton, who has helped study the backflow issue, such events are detrimental to the lake in multiple ways. Crichton explained that as part of its fiveyear plan, the CLA has been studying the overall water quality of the lake. One focus of that research has been the runoff that flows into the six largest streams that feed into Cazenovia Lake. CLA used a three-year study from Cazenovia College, which measured phosphorus levels from all inflow sources to the lake, as the basis for determining the six largest inflow streams. For the past three years, CLA has collected water samples from these six streams in early spring and again following a major rainfall event in the summer. The samples, which are sent to Upstate Freshwater Institute (UFI) for analysis, are measured not only for phosphorus, but also for nitrogen, ammonia, chlorides, suspended solids, specific conductance, and total dissolved phosphorus. The backflow problem, Crichton recalled, was identified after a major rainfall in 2020 and again in 2021. “We collected samples at the upper dam and at the end of the canal at the lakeside as we did with the stream studies,” he said. “The backflow lab results from the UFI were stunning, as they showed phosphorus levels running into the lake that were 1.8 to 6.6 times higher than any of the six streams we tested, and total suspended solids levels that were 5.5 to 11.4 times higher than the streams.” Cazenovia Lake was recently added to a DEC 303(d) “Impaired Water Body Listing” due to elevated phosphorous levels. Crichton explained that high phosphorus levels promote algae growth and increased vegetation, which is why working to maintain

the natural phosphorus to nitrogen balance of a healthy lake is so important. “Cazenovia Lake has experienced algal blooms every year since 2013 — both toxic and non-toxic forms,” he said. “There is an increased density of blooms near the outlet of the lake over this time period.” Crichton also noted that the introduction of suspended solids during backflow events leads to increased sediment in the southeast end of the lake. The CLA’s sediment depth measurements show an average of 12 inches of sediment at the lake outlet compared to an average of less than 3 inches at various other points along the east shore of the lake. “Increased sediment decreases the depth of the lake and could eventually make boat travel in these [areas] impossible,” said Crichton. “The sediment is nutrient-rich and leads to greater weed growth in these areas as well.” Additional issues related to Mill Street dam arise during very dry seasons, like this summer, when the water level between the dams is low. For example, such conditions can lead to higher levels of fish mortality, make it impossible to kayak or canoe in that 1,000-foot stretch of water, and leave the banks looking like a muddy mess.

Stream restoration

As a long-term solution to the problems at hand, CLA, CPF and their partners aim to restore the stream between the dams to its natural, pre-Erie Canal state and appearance. “There is no longer any operational need for the Mill Street dam, and the goal of the program is to restore the creek to its natural state,” said Lines. According to Miller, apart from solving the backflow problem and eliminating the excess pollution it brings into the lake, a stream restoration would provide for a better fish and wildlife habitat, would significantly reduce the possibility of fish dying during low water conditions, and would improve the ascetics of the stream. “Currently, trout cannot get farther upstream because of the Mill Street dam,” Miller said. “A stream restoration will involve putting in rock veins across the stream, which will provide for spawning and living pools for the trout. Additionally, the restoration will include bank stabilization with proper plantings to reduce sediment flow downstream.” Miller highlighted several successful stream restoration projects completed on Chittenango Creek. An overview of these projects is provided in the April 2018 issue of New York State Conservationist (dec.ny.gov/docs/administration_ pdf/0418consmag4web.pdf).

Short-term solution

As a shorter-term solution to Mill Street dam issues, the Canal Corporation has decided to leave the sluice gates open this summer to allow for rapid drainage in a storm event. The Canal Corporation also added “stopper logs” in front of the dam in the beginning of June to retain a base level of water between the dams but also allow any excess water to pour directly over the top of the logs. “This has been effective at keeping the water approximately 12 inches higher than it was

On July 28, the CPF and CLA coordinated a cleanup focused on beautifying a section of Chittenango Creek between the two dams downstream from the lake outlet. before the stopper logs were installed between the two dams,” said Miller. “It is also logical that it would help reduce backflow; however, we have not had enough rain this summer to verify if it would eliminate backflow. But it seems to be an adequate intermediate solution while the stream restoration and dam removal projects are being planned out.”

Planning for partial/complete dam removal

Recently, CLA contracted with Ramboll engineering company to conduct a limited feasibility study regarding some longer-term options for Mill Street dam. On July 27, Miller reported that the draft study, which was expected to be completed that week, is primarily focused on examining partial and full removal of Mill Street dam and determining whether there would be any flooding impacts downstream. Ramboll is also tasked with determining if the dam removal will solve the backflow problem and investigating potential modifications to the “T” where Chittenango Creek intersects the water flowing out of the lake between the two dams. As of July 28, CACDA was in the process of applying (on behalf of the village) for a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) grant for further study of Mill Street dam. “The grant would fund additional investigation, preliminary design and initial permitting for partial removal of the Mill Street dam and subsequent stream restoration between the two dams,” said Lines. “Once that is complete, we will be in a position to apply for final design and construction. We will not find out if this initial request is funded until December of this year.”

Creek cleanup and other CPF initiatives

During the July 28 creek cleanup, CLA and CPF volunteers took advantage of the low water levels to remove some of the trash and debris that, until recently, had been submerged. “A lot of the trash and debris that gets picked up during a big storm event ends up here in this section of the creek where the water slows down upstream of the dam,” said CPF Executive Director Jen Wong. CPF presented the cleanup as an installment of its “Trail Work Thursdays.” On the last Thursday of each month from June through October, weather permitting, CPF board members, staff, and other volun-

teers meet up to spend an hour or two beautifying the community trails before grabbing refreshments at a local establishment. “We want to thank the members of the CLA who came out to join us for this Trail Work Thursday,” said Dave Gerber, CPF stewardship committee co-chair. “We really appreciate the volunteers that help us on these workdays and throughout the year. We’d also like to thank the village for hauling away debris, both for this workday, as well as various other cleanup events and workdays throughout the year.” Wong stated that while CLA takes the lead with respect to protecting the lake, CPF maintains close correspondence with the lake association and actively follows its current management activities and proposed longer-term solutions for this area of the creek. “Many community residents know that the Willow Patch, which is adjacent to this section of creek, is a CPF property,” said Wong. “This section of the dike trail is very popular, with some people walking it on a daily basis, so naturally, CPF has received quite a few inquiries this summer about the water levels.” Wong also reported that the Canal Corporation has completed its gatehouse renovation at the lake dam and will be returning to restore the trail surface later this summer. Additionally, she noted that the 136 trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants planted in the Willow Patch this spring are doing well despite the hot, dry summer. “With the exception of a couple of hybrids selected for their ability to grow in areas with particularly poor soil and lots of rubble, the plants selected were primarily native species that will naturalize and help diversify the plantings in the Willow Patch, which are primarily non-native willow,” she said. CPF is a private, non-profit organization that works to protect the historical, agricultural, and natural resources in and around Cazenovia for the benefit of the community and the enjoyment of future generations. CLA is an all-volunteer organization consisting of residents, homeowners, business owners, and elected officials who strive to protect the environmental and recreational sustainability of Cazenovia Lake. Lauren Lines, Executive Director of the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association, informed the board about the status of grant applications. One grant, if funded, would examine how the village and other area stakeholders can engage with the school district’s mandate to operate an electric vehicle charging station. Lines, who recently submitted the application, stated, “I think it’s a strong application . . . The state is really looking for these shared services.” The village will find out in December if they are awarded the funds. Lines also completed an application for an $86,000 Department of State Local Waterfront Revitalization grant that would fund a study on the partial removal of the Mill Street Dam and a stream restoration to address the lake back flow. Additionally, Lines noted that she recently submitted a $600,000 combined grant application through New York State Parks and Canal Corpora-

tion that, if funded, will improve the pier and beach area. “I don’t think we should hold our breath but the fact that we’re expanding and building the beach area, I made a case for increased usage. I think having that added recreation is key.” The board approved a resolution to move forward with a grant application with Hamilton College and SUNY Morrisville for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative to develop a College Corridor that would provide students and faculty with the resources they need to thrive and stay in the area. The board also approved an assembly permit for the annual 9/11 service at Memorial Park, and the process is underway with the American Legion to request the use of Memorial Park for its annual Veteran’s Day Ceremony on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. The Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Village Municipal Building, 90 Albany Street. Have you ever been fitted for a golf ball? According to MyGolfSpy, the majority of golfers usually get fitted and replace their drivers about every 4-5 years and their irons a little less frequently. Hybrids and fairway woods usually stay in your bag a little longer. How about putters?… They can stay in your golf bag for decades, except for a few of the “wackos” who have already purchased three in the last month. The majority of golf clubs are manufactured on a one-year cycle for new models but there are exceptions…some irons are on a two year cycle. MyGplfSpy recommends that, “golfers wait two generations between purchases for most clubs but for wedges… more often”. So, when was the last time you were fitted for a golf ball? Most of us would probably say never. Some of us would say last year or maybe even this Spring when Bridgestone Golf was conducting one of their free Ball Fitting Clinics at a golf course or golf retail store. I believe Bridgestone has been doing ball fittings longer and better than any other ball manufacturer in the world. They can cross-reference results with data they have collected from over 350,000 live fitting sessions and 2 million swings since 2007 to recommend the “one ball” model that will optimally help our game. According to Bridgestone, 75% of golfers currently play the wrong ball for their game and claim that just by switching to the right model golfers can add, on average, 9.4 yards to a tee shot. Furthermore, they boast that “switching over from Titleist Pro V1 series balls, you can typically gain 6.9 yards, plus straighter drives”. As you know, Tiger Woods is now one of their staffers and says, “It’s the most important item in the bag because you use it on every shot”, adding that, “this ball (Bridgestone Tour B XS) .gives me confidence on all shots”. MyGolfSpy has just concluded testing 37 golf balls…for 60 hours…hitting 4,500 shots and using a robot to determine the “Longest Balls in Golf ” based on our “Swing Speed”. Smith wrote in his journal, “August 23 1872, Edmonia Lewis (artist) of Rome, Italy, comes to take the first steps toward putting my statue in marble. I am surprised and not pleased by it. September 3, Edmonia leaves us.” Smith’s disinclination to a statue (a project conceived by his friends) prevailed. Edmonia made a plaster cast of the clasped right hands of Gerrit and Ann Smith, and later in her studio in Rome she carved the hands in marble. The sculpted hands will be brought to the Emancipation Day program by the Madison County Historical Society, Oneida NY.
