The Small Business Development Center at Onondaga Community College (SBDC) recently named Cazenovia’s 20|EAST farm store “Madison County Small Business of the Year.” Pictured: SBDC Regional Director Bob Griffin, Certified Business Advisor Paul Brooks, 20|EAST owner McKenzie Houseman, and Houseman’s support network. ers. I will continue to be a ‘Collector of Stories’ for all the food and gifts that are made by talented artists and makers. These stories are what make us special and make the buyer so excited to give their gift or keep it for themselves.” Houseman also said she is excited to continue to be part of the local business community. “We have all gotten together to create ‘The pulse of Caz’ page on Instagram and Facebook,” she said. “It is called Eat Shop Play Caz. Our goal is to encourage people to come spend a day or weekend checking out everything we have to offer. There is so much.” SBDC Regional Director Bob Griffin and Paul Brooks, a certified business advisor for SBDC, presented the Madison County Small Business of the Year award to Houseman at her shop on May 3. “I was completely blown away [by the news]” Houseman recalled. “I did not even know I was being considered. It seemed extra special as it is my five-year anniversary on Main Street. I have also been receiving treatment for my second go around with breast cancer since November 2021. I have not been able to work as much as I would like, and receiving the award meant so much.”

According to Brooks, SBDC based its decision on the business’ growth and sustainability, as well as its impact on the community. “Five years in business and [20|EAST] has become the go-to business in the community for almost whatever you need,” said Brooks. “We were also impressed with McKenzie’s outstanding use of social media and digital resources to promote.” All the 2022 Small Business of The Year honorees have, at some point, been assisted by the SBDC to start or grow their small businesses. Brooks’ predecessor, Melissa Davis — who now serves as an agriculture economic development specialist with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County — advised Houseman early on when she started the business on Route 20. Houseman described SBDC as a wonderful resource. “They helped me create a business plan years ago to secure a government grant through NY state,” she said. “That can be a very daunting task, and they helped me all the way through.” To learn more about 20|EAST and Cazenovia Cut Block, visit 20-east.com. CazCares Turns 40, invites community to celebrate It was with great enthusiasm that CazCares celebrated its 40th anniversary with an event at the Madison County Distillery. Community residents joined CazCares Board members, Director Gigi Redmond, and Assistant Director Casey Frazee for a reception. Outgoing board member Julie Shotzberger was thanked for her many years of service and Joline Hemminger and Jack Stevens were welcomed as new board members. The Gigi Award for Exceptional Dedication to CazCares was presented to Nancy Sellers. CazCares began in the spring of 1982, when the pastors from six Cazenovia churches came together after identify-

ing the need to provide food and clothing for area residents who were having difficulties providing for their families. Using a model from the United Methodist Church “Bread and Soup Program,” the initial program was a Lenten soup supper. Soon after a food cupboard with donations from church collections was set up in the basement of the Atwell Mill. CazCares stayed in the Atwell Mill until 2007 when it moved to its current location on Route 20. “The need for our services remains today,” Redmond said. “Many of our neighbors struggle to keep their cupboards full and feed their families. The COVID-19 pandemic was especially dif-

ficult for low-income families. We saw an increase in the number of families needing food. Fortunately, CazCares was able to stay open and meet this need. This summer new challenges are anticipated as the prices for food, gasoline, and home fuel oil rise. CazCares will continue to offer assistance through the Food Pantry, Clothing Closet, and Back to School programs. These programs, along with other support and referral services offered, will help ease the worries families have to make ends meet as prices rise.” CazCares is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings or by appointment.

On June 6, the Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees received its final report from Trustee/Deputy Mayor Dave Porter who is stepping down after twelve years of service. During his tenure, Porter took on multiple roles, including fire commissioner, water & sewer commissioner, parks & recreation commissioner, and leader of the village’s sustainability initiatives. In honor of Porter’s continued dedication to the village and its residents, the board adopted a resolution of appreciation. “[The] village will enjoy enduring benefits from his many years of service, from our wellequipped and trained fire department, to our well-maintained water and sewer infrastructure, to investments in green energy and efficiency that make us a leader among communities in New York State,” the resolution states. Proposed by Mayor Kurt Wheeler, the resolution also commends Porter for carrying out each of his roles with integrity and enthusiasm, for giving selflessly of his time, talents, and energies, and for his attention to detail, probing questions, good will and devotion. Porter said it has been an honor and pleasure to serve the village. “It was really eye-opening to see how the municipal sausage gets made,” he said. “I had no idea. . . It takes a while to kind of figure it out. It took me at least two years to get into the groove. I did have a lot of fun. I enjoyed working with everybody in the village, I really did.”

By kate Hill Staff Writer This spring, Cazenovia’s 20|EAST farm store at 85 Albany St. was named “Madison County Small Business of the Year” by the Small Business Development Center at Onondaga Community College (SBDC). The SBDC offers no-cost, confidential business advisement services to individuals and companies throughout Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga, Oswego, and Seneca counties. In celebration of National Small Business Week (May 1-7), the center presented “Small Business of The Year” awards to one business in each of the six counties it serves. 20|EAST is owned and operated by McKenzie Houseman, who also runs her family business, Cazenovia Cut Block, out of the same space. Houseman and her late brother, self-taught woodworker Tim Hughes, launched Cazenovia Cut Block at the local farmers’ market in 2009. Soon, customers started calling in the middle of the week to order items for pick-up at the market. They also began requesting expanded offerings, such as custom countertops, tables, and butcher block islands. In 2010, the Cazenovia Cut Block showroom opened at 4157 Midstate Lane, just off Route 20 East, and in 2015, production moved to a warehouse at the same location. In addition to selling cutting boards, bowls, wood islands, countertops, tables, and other custom pieces, the showroom also started carrying other items produced by local artisans and craftsmen. When Houseman opened 20|EAST on Albany Street in 2017, she further expanded her offerings to include Cazenovia Cut Block wood items, gifts, art, artisan products, fresh flowers, and numerous food items from all over Central New York. “My vision for 20|EAST and Cazenovia Cut Block is to continue to support as many local businesses as I can,” said Houseman. “I want to continue to find new and interesting items to always have something exciting for my custom-

Caz artist exhibits nature inspired artwork at Norwich gallery By kate Hill Staff Writer

This summer, Cazenovia resident and fine artist Robert L. Kasprzycki is showing a collection of his work at the Chenango Arts Council’s Mariea Brown and Raymond Loft Galleries in Norwich, NY. On display through June 24, the exhibit features 20 original works, including oil paintings, acrylic paintings, a digital rendering of a 2007 Corvette, high-definition photographs, seven framed prints, and copies of Kasprzycki’s 2019 novel, “The Talisman,” which tells the story of a Native American family who migrates from Alaska to British Columbia, Canada in pursuit of a better life. Kasprzycki has titled the exhibition “Nature’s Inspiration.” “Most every vacation we take includes hiking [and] photographing scenery and/or wildlife,” the artist explained. “Landscapes influence most of my artwork. Even my novel. . . relies upon a wilderness setting [that] is key to the plot and characters.”

According to Mary Beth Miller of the Chenango Arts Council, the subject matter of Nature’s Inspiration goes well beyond the great outdoors. “Beautiful scenery, still life, and more is captured as intimate moments that would otherwise have been lost,” said Miller. “Robert Kasprzycki makes use of many mediums. . . to give a stunning realism to all he depicts. Viewers can truly feel as though they are sharing the moment with him.” Born in Connecticut, Kasprzycki moved to Central New York in the 1980s; he has resided in Cazenovia since 2007. He holds several degrees from Syracuse University, where he received his first instruction in art. For the most part, however, he is self-taught in fine art techniques. His artistic focuses are on landscapes, still life, and classic cars. “The medium I prefer is oil paint,” Kasprzycki said. “[However,] I may begin a piece using acrylic paint as an underpainting, which will be finished with oil

Caz College’s Inclusive Education unit reaccredited The Inclusive Elementary Education and Inclusive Early Childhood Education programs at Cazenovia College have been reaccredited by the Accreditation Commission of the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). The programs were reaccredited for a full term of seven years. The association’s determination included a review of the program’s record, a quality assurance report, virtual focus group interviews with stakeholders, and a quality review team report. The college’s program is currently one of 57 educational providers in 14 states and territories throughout the United States that have been AAQEP accredited. Accreditation of the programs is an achievement that reflects the outstanding abilities both current teacher candidates and alumni teachers have in providing inclusive education and care for learners, as well as the positive environment the College and Cazenovia community offer students, says Dr. Jessica Essary, program director of Inclusive

Elementary Education and associate professor of inclusive education. “Cazenovia College has a long history of receiving teacher candidates who are curious about teaching and learning and who care about their students’ wellbeing,” she said. “Our teacher preparation program coursework offers a variety of exciting opportunities that foster collaborative classroom environments. Our teacher candidates gain increased awareness of, and sensitivity to, individual cultures and identities throughout their studies. In a community where everyone is on a first-name basis, we thank our friendly faculty, staff, and administrators for the difference they make in the lives of our teacher candidates. We also thank the village and our entire regional community for believing in the power of education and supporting our degree programs.” David Rufo, co-program director, Inclusive Education, and assistant professor of Inclusive Education, added, “The education programs at Cazenovia College place a priority on innovation, critical thinking, and creative engage-

Cazenovia College appoints vice president for enrollment management Mark Lapreziosa has been named vice president for enrollment management at Cazenovia College, President Dr. David Bergh has announced. Lapreziosa has been serving as an interim head of enrollment at the college since January. He has a background of more than 30 years in strategic enrollment management, admissions, financial aid strategy, trend analysis, recruitment planning, staff development, and admissions marketing. He comes to Cazenovia after many years in higher education enrollment management for Arcadia University in Glenside, Penn. There, he served as vice president for enrollment management and vice president for enrollment management, career education, and student affairs. He led admissions and enrollment for undergraduate and graduate programs and adult and accelerated degree programs, as well as financial aid and international admissions. He was also responsible for undergraduate and graduate financial aid, all student affairs units, and the Office of Career Education, and served on the President’s Cabinet and a variety of university committees. After leaving Arcadia, he spent seven months working full-time as interim vice President of enrollment management at Chestnut Hill College near Philadelphia before taking the interim position at Cazenovia in 2022. “We have been impressed with Mark’s background and skill set in areas that are

ment. Our teacher candidates are taught to be reflective practitioners who value the diverse cultural experiences each student brings to the early childhood and elementary classroom environments. Our classes are designed to examine pedagogical precedents while at the same time encourage progressive approaches to teaching and learning so that our teacher candidates become thought-provoking and inspiring leaders in the field of education.” AAQEP is a membership association and quality assurance agency that provides accreditation services and formative support to all types of educator preparation providers. It is nationally recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Accreditation signifies that a program prepares effective educators who continue to grow as professionals. In order to achieve accredited status, a program must demonstrate that it meets all AAQEP standards and their associated aspects. Cazenovia College has two program

Importantly, he has listened to and learned from campus constituencies and has established a new enrollment management staffing model based on best practices in intentional enrollment and retention. We are very pleased to welcome him permanently to this role and as an essential member of the senior leadership team at the college.” Lapreziosa has a bachelor’s degree in American government from the University of Virginia.

Community Bikes program distributes free bicycles

M

adison County residents lined up early last Sunday to receive free bicycles at Community Bikes’ annual Bike Distribution Day in Oneida. Nearly 250 bikes, helmets and locks were placed with children and adults for whom buying a bike would be a hardship. “This was a great day,” said Community Bikes’ Chuck Fox. “Our volunteers did a wonderful job of fitting each person with a bike that they like, that suits them well for how they plan to use it and that they can enjoy right away.” Fox pointed out that all of the bikes have been donated, then reconditioned and cleaned by volunteers who work throughout the year. Community Bikes coordinates with county human service agencies, schools, churches and other organizations to pre-register bike recipients. “I really want to thank you for the service that you provide to people who are in need of something like this,” said Terena, mother of

three who was among the many who arrived early at the BOCES Costello Transportation Center to receive a bike on Sunday. “Thank you so much for being there for so many- and hopefully many more to come.” Fox said that a second Bike Distribution Day is scheduled for Sunday, May 15 in Hamilton. Founded in 2008, Community Bikes has placed nearly 4,000 bikes with children and adults from families in need in Madison County, and with at risk youth through its international outreach in the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. In Tandem, a new initiative of Community Bikes, uses tandem bikes to provide a shared bike riding experience for adults with disabilities who might not otherwise be able to enjoy riding a bike. Information is available at the organization’s website at communitybikes.org. Community Bikes recently distributed free bikes to Madison County children. Submitted photo

Fayetteville officials raise flag for Pride Month Fayetteville officials began the month of June last week by raising the Progress Pride Flag onto the facade of the village hall on East Genesee Street. Just before the rain fell, a brief ceremony for the commencement of Pride Month was held, during which Mayor Mark Olson read a proclamation to a group gathered on the grass that included Manlius town councilors and local members of the LGBTQIA community. Olson said the Village of Fayetteville supports the rights and freedoms of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex or asexual while recognizing their “continued struggle.” He stated that

June is viewed as a time for remembrance and education about individuals who have paved the way for that community’s subcultures and those who continue to break down barriers nationally and globally. He further noted that parades, workshops and concerts are occurring across the country throughout the month, citing the Stonewall uprising that took place in New York City in the summer of 1969 as both the springboard for these celebrations and a “rallying point for equality and respect for all.” Created by graphic designer Daniel Quasar, the Progress Pride Flag is a reworking of the existing rainbow version that adds a chevron pattern with stripes to represent trans individuals,

people of color considered marginalized, and anyone living with or lost to HIV or AIDS. “We think about the American flag or the state flag or the firefighters’ flag or your fraternity’s flag—whatever the flag is, it’s important to you and it means something,” Olson said. “This flag means something to a lot of people in our community, and that’s what it’s about.” He said he wants everyone and “not just certain people” to feel like they have a welcome place in the village. Trustee Mark Matt, who proposed the proclamation, said the flag will be up for the remainder of June to promote acceptance of “diversity” and to devote the full month to “reflection and understanding.” Kate de la Garza, a resident

of Fayetteville and a member of the LGBTQIA community, said the acknowledgement of Pride Month has grown in the village since she moved there seven years ago. “It’s pretty amazing to me that just in that amount of time we’ve gotten to a point where both the town and the village have passed proclamations and are raising the flag,” Garza said. Recalling the day in October 2019 when someone pulled down the multi-colored pride flag from the May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society and burned it, she said the publicizing of the June 1 ceremony conveys the message that the village hopes for people like her to be comfortable. “It really makes us feel safer and more welcome here,” she said.

Drive safely

According to AAA, in New York State, 222 people were killed in crashes involving teen drivers during what the organization terms the “100 Deadliest Days” from 2008 to 2018. AAA defines these 100 days as the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal teen crashes increase dramatically. Nationwide, more than 8,300 people died in crashes involving teen drivers during the “100 Deadliest Days” over that 10 year span. That’s more than seven people a day each summer. AAA recommends that parents model safe driving behaviors and help ensure their teens practice them too. Due to their inexperience, teen drivers are at a higher risk of crashes. According to the AAA Foundation Traffic Safety Culture Index, about 72% of teen drivers aged 16 to 18 admitted to having engaged in at least one of the following risky behaviors in the past 30 days: Driving 10 mph over the speed limit on a residential street (47%), driving 15 mph over the speed limit on a freeway (40%), texting (35%), running a red light (32%), aggressive driving (31%), drowsy driving (25%) and driving without a seatbelt (17%). To keep roads safe this summer, AAA encourages parents to talk with teens early and often about abstaining from dangerous behavior behind the wheel, such as speeding, impairment and distracted driving. It is also recommended that parents teach by example and minimize risky behavior when driving such as texting and other distractions while parents are behind the wheel. Other suggestions include establish a parent-teen driving agreement that sets family rules for teen drivers and to conduct at least 50 hours of supervised practice driving with their teen. To support parents in conducting practice driving sessions during COVID-19 and beyond, AAA is offering parents access to resources to help guide their child behind the wheel. The “Coaching Your New Driver – An In-Car Guide for Parents” offers behindthe-wheel lesson plans, including a variety of “Dos and Don’ts” to make the learning experience as helpful as possible. Suggestions include parents ahring thier wisdom and experience with new drivers while remaining attentive at all times while their teend river is behind the wheel. It is also recommended to drive in different weather and lighting conditions as well as goin gout on different roads and routes with new drivers to help give them a variety of experiences with a more experienced driver. There are also web-based resources such as TeenDriving.AAA.com, which has a variety of tools to help prepare parents and teens for the dangerous summer driving season. The online AAA StartSmart Parent Session also offers resources for parents on how to become effective in-car coaches as well as advice on how to manage their teen’s overall driving privileges. It is also recommended that teens preparing for the responsibility of driving should enroll in a driver education program that teaches how to avoid driver distraction and other safety skills. For many the chance to drive is a rite of passage, marking an important milestone in the lives of many and can be a taste of greater freedom and independence. By taking the time to help guide children and give them as many resources as possible, this can be a fun and exciting time in their lives and this information can help keep them safe and well versed in what to do when they are out on the road.

The result? “We can’t fix your old decrepit computer because your adapter isn’t working for some reason or other.” Yikes! I went back to my original computer, repeated all of the searches I’d done before … while muttering words I can’t print. So, I called my son who is the family digital guru and reviewed what I had done. He had no idea why I couldn’t find the adapter, telling me that what I had to do, which was find it, uninstall it and then reinstall it…kind of like turning it off and on which seems to be the catch all method for most digital problems. It was now close to 10 p.m. I was tired and frustrated, so I took a shower and washed my hair. Refreshed, sort of, I began again. It was close to midnight when I tried one more thing and voila, there it was, the Intel adapter. I turned it off and then turned it back on and the icon appeared in the tray, with a request for the password. I had the password. Don’t ask me to repeat how I found the adapter. I can’t remember. At midnight or so, I was back on the net. I sent the two emails. None of the sweaters have been washed and I still have no idea what to do with the two really good shoe boxes, the stacks of papers are still waiting my ministrations, but I conquered … what I conquered I am not sure … but I did something. FROM THE MAILBAG

From the Manlius American Legion Post 141

To the editor: Members and family. I am thrilled to announce that Randy Walser has been nominated as commander for legion year 2022. Considering we have an outstanding candidate that wants the commander position, I respectfully announce that I have decided to not run for commander this year for several reasons. I am aggressively pursuing major career goals this year and on top of five weeks of training I am attending next week, have also recently been notified I will be attending an additional four months of required training this fall. Considering this and many other factors, I feel it is most appropriate that I take on the first vice position and support Randy as commander. Randy is someone who is suitable to dedicate the time to serve this position and I have high confidence he will continue to move the post forward. I am deeply grateful, honored and privileged to have served Post 141 as commander. Over the last four to five years, together, we have successfully: Held well over 200 events to raise funds, gain new membership, and gain support. Those events include fish dinner benefits, live music, karaoke nights, holiday parties, golf tournaments, golf leagues, large scale 100 year anniversary party, BBQs, motorcycle rides, pitch leagues Memorial Day parade and community open houses, etc. We have rebuilt fish dinners to be the most significant income and revenue for the post each year. Thank You to all our volunteers who worked the kitchen each week. None of which would have been possible without all of you. We have built a team of dedicated volunteer bartending staff and daily operational management team. We have made well over $30,000 in upgrades to the post to include new barstools, new 65 inch TV in the dining room, new bluetooth music system, a dart board, new roof, new soffits, all new siding, a new large road sign, just to name a few. I cannot thank everyone enough for instilling the trust and confidence in me as commander to navigate the ship in the right direction. The Manlius legion has been a staple in my life since I was a child, coming into the post on a regular basis with family. The post is what mainly inspired me to join the military and holds a special place in my heart. I thank you all again and hope to have the privilege of serving Post 141 and this legion family as commander again in the future. Randy is taking on a lot of responsibility as commander but also currently has his plate full as the Post adjutant, on the board and also as building/operations manager. The post

Keep our curbs?

To the editor: In response to Rob Arnold’s letter to the editor “Keep our Curbs” in the May 25 issue of the Cazenovis Republican, I offer the following: The first is, as expressed by the town supervisor, is why should everyone in the town pay for something that benefits only eight homes? The estimated cost to replace the curbs is between $250,000 and $350,000. Not an insignificant amount. Do the town taxpayers really want to spend that much money for the eight families? To the point about walkers and cyclists they have to deal with no curbs the rest of Ridge Road and other town roads so a few hundred feet of curbs is of no real advantage. Just about everyone agrees that the curb section of Ridge Road needs to be widened and drains replaced or repaired. The estimated cost is approximately $450,000 and adding the cost of replacing the curb brings the total of $700,000+! As the town supervisor said if the curbs are so important then get a 30 year bond issue and pay for them yourself. Oh, and it was the Davis Baking Power, not Dixie Baking people who lived in Jepson. Why?

To the editor: I’d really like to know why the door to the elementary school in Uverde, Texas was open? Not locked? And how did this killer know to go to this open door instead of all the other locked doors at the elementary school? Did he have inside info on the open door? Obviously, sadly and too late, all of the doors should have been locked. And secondly, too many good folks on the boob tube are calling this killer an animal. That’s an insult to the animal world where animals take good car of their young feeding, protecting and caring for them. This man was a sick sadistic human, a lost narcissistic killer! John E. Central City steamer No. 1 will go on a picnic excursion to Cazenovia, via the Chenango railroad, about the 27th of June. The railroad company promised to have the road completed to this point at that time. The fire department of Cazenovia have extended an invitation to steamer No. 1’s boys to make this a treat, a number of them being in town on Saturday on that business. A band will accompany the excursionists. A grove has been engaged and refreshments will be furnished. – [Syracuse Standard] We hear that the firemen have not been able to secure the use of the grove as expected, but undoubtedly there will be found some public-spirited citizen ready to furnish a suitable place for the fire ladies to enjoy their picnic in. They can have our door-yard, garden house and all, if there is no other place. It’s rather small, and was not designed for picnics, but it’s as free as “fire and emptyings,” to use the words of a former citizen noted for his liberal ideas. There is plenty of room, boys, bring the wives, sweet-hearts and all the children.

Rich & Co’s. circus arrived in the early morning on Tuesday and pitched its (once) snowy tents on the ball grounds, amid the admiring supervision of the small boys of the town. The aggregation was hardly Barnum like in its proportions, but everything seemed to be in good order and the appearance and conduct of the employees decidedly superior to that of such organizations generally. The street parade occurred at 12 o’clock, and was very creditable. The performance commenced at 2 o’clock with nearly all the seats filled. The acts were all creditable and some of them decidedly good. No feature was poorly done. The tumbling, performing dogs, tight wire exhibition and the clowns are worthy of special mention. The evening exhibition was also well attended, and the show, on the whole, may be considered about average for Cazenovia.

As Mr. John Reidle was getting off the afternoon train from Syracuse yesterday afternoon at the Cazenovia West Shore Railroad station, Officer E.D. Hulbert arrested him charging him with a violation of the Liquor Tax Law, Chapter 39, Section P, Subdivision 5, which prohibits having intoxicating liquors in ones possession in a dry town. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace H. J. Rouse and a search brought to light a package containing two quarts of whiskey. District Attorney Kiley appeared against him. Mr. Reidle pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. As he claimed that he did not know the provisions of the law, which went into effect June 1st, he was given a suspended sentence but the Justice made it plain that hereafter a similar excuse will not be acceptable in his court from anyone.

Work on the new bridge spanning the creek at the foot of Albany Street is in full swing. It is the busiest place in town with the possible exception of the East Lake road which is being concreted. A temporary detour was built over the creek at the north of the old bridge. A 30-ton shovel has worked on it with no damage to it. Although the contract did not call for a walk for pedestrians one was built on the north side, which is proving to be a good thing for children and older people, who become confused by approaching cars. The material for the temporary bridge construction came from the gravel bed opposite the entrance to Evergreen cemetery on the Fenner road. Although the detour is at the foot of the Albany street and Nelson street hills, no accidents have as yet occurred owning probably, to the especially well constructed and well lighted signs at the approaches to the bridge on either side.

This time of year is what I like to call “hair on fire” season. There’s so much to do, now that spring has finally decided to stick around, and not nearly enough time to do (it all). That’s right, do it all. We want to be able to do it all don’t we? We’d like to keep those garden beds weed-free, pest-free, well-watered and deadheaded. But when was the last time you sat down, put your feet up and said to yourself: “Whew! I’m all caught up now.” Maybe too far back to remember, maybe never. Don’t distress. Tasks will be waiting for you practically from the moment you start working on the items on your list. Making your health wait, however, is not a good idea. Gardening is good for your health. I can quote from many articles, some even peer reviewed, that state how good it is for us to be outside, to work with our whole bodies, to bend, stretch, kneel and grow things that give even more back to us than what we put into them. Simply go to jstor.org and type in “gardening” and “health” in the search fields. All gardeners have their reasons for what they do. Let’s not forget, in the midst of “hair on fire” season, what those reasons may be. I’d like to introduce a different way of thinking about this time of year: festina lente, an Italian expression that means make haste…..

Cornell Cooperative Extension is sharing ideas to make gardening a little stressful this spring and summer. but slowly. This may sound like a contradiction of terms but let me explain. Gardening, no matter why you do it, requires that we sometimes adjust our expectations based upon what’s necessary and what’s possible. If we run around with our hair on fire, we’re too busy trying to put out that fire, therefore, seeing clearly what is truly necessary and possible, is tough. Hurrying, but slowly, means to disconnect our reactive natures from the pressure to get it all done and instead, accomplish our tasks quickly, while thinking about them mindfully, slowly and thoroughly. This is a skill I am still not a pro at yet, but every time I drop a full tray of plants, pull out something I just planted thinking it was a weed, forget to water seeds I just sowed, start planting before I have all my tools or before I’ve added compost to

the area; I am reminded of just how important a skill it is. Festina lente lowers my stress, keeps me from making silly mistakes and especially important: it keeps me from forgetting the reasons I love to grow things in the first place. All that good intent doesn’t get lost in the ‘fire’ I create but instead becomes my fuel, helping me continue a mindful momentum in the garden. Have gardening questions? Madison County Farm of the Year named One hundred and ninety-nine years ago, a dairy farming legacy, borne of Honeoye soils and sacrifice was started in the tiny hamlet of Stockbridge along the banks of the mighty Oneida Creek in Madison County. In describing the Lyman Farm’s historic and current journey; resilience and adaptation are key components in the lives of the seventh generation organic dairy farm managed by Glen, Elaine, and sons, Jesse and Sam Lyman. For the 2003 New York State Century Farm, and soon to be bicentennial farm, the Lyman family has a new distinction to go along with their years of hard work, sacrifice, and stewardship: 2022 Madison County Conservation Farm of the Year. In paying homage to the past dairy families of Jesse Lyman, Charles Lyman, Irving Lyman, Glen Lyman, Lloyd and Betty Lyman, a poem saved in a family scrapbook from 1850 entitled “Nature”, signifies their contributions to the community of Stockbridge. “There’s grandeur in the aspiring hills; In air, and earth, and sky; Worthy the greatness of a God; Or angels’ minstrelsy.” For Glen, who graduated from Cornell with an Ag. Economics degree, carrying on the dairy tradition has always been about transition,

with the constant of keeping the hills and valleys of their now 400 acres mostly in sod. Since the farm was founded, the land has produced quality forage to feed the high-producing, prize-winning “Lyman” prefixed Holstein herds. “With our forage base and business model, my son Jesse and I saw a natural progression to organic production starting in 2013,” said Lyman. Shipping their milk to Organic Valley Cooperative from the 35 cow herd lines up well environmentally and financially, while “simplifying and lowering expenses” on the farm. With the advent of more grazing time, cow traffic and nutrient management plan considerations, Glen and Jesse teamed up with the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District to plan, design and build a covered bedded pack/manure storage facility, reinforced laneway, and a heifer grazing system with portable water stations and stream buffer. Prior to this, the farm did their own strip cropping, water diverters, rock-lined waterway, and paddock fences for the dairy grazing system. These measures have enhanced water quality throughout the property using the family’s resources and sweat equity along with program funding and technical assistance from the Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District, the

New York State Agricultural Environmental Management Program, the New York State Environmental Protection Fund, and the Finger Lakes - Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance (FL-LOWPA). “Working with the Conservation District has afforded us the luxury of getting critical engineering expertise, an independent set of decisionmakers and financial support to improve our farm for the future,” said Lyman. “Our family appreciates the recognition for the work our family has done for close to 200 years operating a small local dairy farm and it’s positive impact on our community,” said Glen. Glen and Jesse have also diversified into producing over 800 bales of organic hay which is sold locally to fellow plain community organic dairy farms in Madison and Oneida Counties. When time allows, they have produced maple syrup while Elaine has developed a professional bakery business. Future plans may include selling grass-fed beef and compost to the community. Glen echoes what his mom, Betty, has said for years, “We’ve had to make sacrifices and adapt, which is done by working harder and longer as well as “diversifying” what we produce. It’s important to be happy with what you have. You don’t need a lot to be happy.”

boys tennis wins sectional, regional titles by Phil Blackwell

With each step and each victory it achieves, the Cazenovia boys tennis team separates itself further from all of its predecessors. In the first-ever New York State Public High School Athletic Association team tournament, the Lakers picked up a pair of victories that allows it to journey to New York City this weekend to compete for a state Division II championship. Just getting into the state tournament required Cazenovia, after claiming the Section III Class C-1 title in mid-May, to beat two other area champions. First, the Lakers pulled out a 3-2 decision over C-2 champion Cooperstown. Then it defeated Class B champion New Hartford by that same margin. Now it was on to state competition. It began May 29 at Utica Parkway Courts where, against undefeated Section II champion Maple Hill, the Lakers pulled off a 5-0 shutout. Each of the singles players – Traian Cherciu, Garret Lounsbury and Jake Wardell – won their matches in straight sets/ Cherciu gave up four games in his opening set but the Lakers’ trio otherwise surrendered just three games in the other five sets. The matches were a bit closer in doubles, but again Cazenovia took them in straight sets as the teams of Cy Lurie-Cart-

er Ruddy and Andrew Falso-Gabe Reagan prevailed. Moving on, the Lakers would travel north to Section VII’s Plattsburgh for last Tuesday’s regional final. Team members were seen off by a large crowd of students and supporters that gathered outside the high school, complete with an escort of fire trucks. They had a reason to celebrate later in the day, too, when Cazenovia was able to defeat Plattsburgh 4-1 and secure its berth in the state final four. Falso and Reagan won 6-0, 6-0 over John Cantwell and Simon Meyer, with Lurie and Ruddy going through a third set but able to defeat Braden Fitzwater and Ben Lambert 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Up in singles, Cherciu pushed Sebastian Bonnabesse to a third set in a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 defeat, but Lounsbury fought off Andrew Bula 6-4, 7-5 and Wardell got a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nick Bula. Cazenovia will join three other regional champions at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens this Saturday for the NYSPHSAA championships. Semifinals are at 9 a.m. and the championship match is at 2:30.

Lacrosse Lakers fall in sectional final by Phil Blackwell

As hard rain fell over Liverpool High School Stadium on the evening of May 27, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team was in prime position to claim a Section III championship. Having almost fallen out of the playoffs in the quarterfinal round, the Lakers now found itself in front of LaFayette/Onondaga in the third quarter of the Class D title game, only needing to maintain its effort in order to finish on top. Instead, at the worst moment possible Cazenovia’s offense dried up, and the Lancers, completing a remarkable rescue from a slump that lasted nearly the entire regular season, prevailed 10-7 to earn the sectional title. All of this seemed unlikely when these teams first met May 5, a game dominated by Cazenovia as it ripped LaFayette 17-5. Right after that, the Lancers’ record dipped to 4-8, with little indication that it would recover and even get to the sectional tournament. But then LaFayette won three in a row, secured the no. 4 seed in Class D and, after a quarterfinal romp over South Jefferson, upended top seed Skaneateles in a wild 1715 semifinal on May 24 right after Cazenovia had upended Marcellus in the other semifinal, avenging two regular-season losses to the Mustangs. Now, in the sectional final, the intention for LaFayette was similar to what had not worked for Marcellus - namely, trying to contain Cazenovia attacker Brody Coleman, who entered the game having scored 79 goals this spring. Again, the Lakers worked well around this plan early, Coleman dishing out four assists as D.B. Falge and Jack Wright both scored twice, with single goals going to Forrest Ives, Chris Vecchiarelli and Wyatt

Hartley. Leading 3-2 after one period, Cazenovia’s margin held up and then, in the third quarter, expanded, the Lakers up 7-4 and poised to grab control. But it would never score again, stymied by an inspired LaFayette defense that, combined with the wet conditions, frustrated the Lakers’ plans. A pivotal 4-0 run to close the period got LaFayette in front, and throughout the fourth quarter Cazenovia remained quiet, unable to turn around the momentum that had gone the Lancers’ way. Meanwhile, Jameson Bucktooth and Kahtehliyo Smith led the comeback, Bucktooth finishing with four goals and one assist and Smith contributing three goals, LaFayette advancing to face Chenango Forks in the regional round as the Lakers’ season concluded with an 11-8 record. Remarkably, all eight of Cazenovia’s losses were by three goals or less. Cazenovia still had a lot to celebrate, though, as Lakers alum Cole Willard helped lead an undefeated University of Tampa Spartans to the NCAA Division II championship May 29. In Tampa’s11-7 victory over Mercy College in the final at East Hartford, Connecticut, Willard put in four goals on just five shot attempts. He transferred to Tampa after four years at Penn State, taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted student-athletes due to COVID-19. Willard was just one of many Section III athletes on the undefeated Tampa squad, which included Casey Platenik (Jamesville-DeWitt), Owen Matukas, Charlie Bolesh, Luke McAnaney (all from Westhill), Braeden Williams (LaFayette), Nick Papa (Fayetteville-Manlius), Dan Stehle (Baldwinsville) and Robert Lobello (Marcellus).

In the late 1930s Albert Einstein was invited to join the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton University in the U.S. The founder of the institute loved to play golf and invited Einstein to play with him. I never imagined that Einstein was ever a golfer. I was right. He never played the game. However, because he was fond of the founder, Louis Bamberger, who loved the game, he agreed to visit the Springdale Golf Club where lessons were arranged with a young, enthusiastic golf Pro. The rest of the story is told by Anne Cain, a golf instructor at Amelia Island Golf Club, in Florida where she found out about the lesson from Dr. Robert Lewis, an 84 year old member at Springdale who said he witnessed the lesson… The Pro decided that the first lesson would cover putting and chipping. It didn’t take long for the young Pro to realize that his celebrity pupil was not as skilled with his hands, as he was with his mind. Desperate to help, the Pro continued giving further instructions each time Einstein did not make contact with the ball. This, of course, caused him to become increasingly frustrated and confused. Finally, Einstein asked the young Pro to give him a few golf balls. Although the Pro was a bit puzzled, he gave him the balls. Einstein decided to throw all of the balls at his instructor and shouted, “catch”. The Pro gave it the old college try, but did not catch a single ball. Mr. Einstein paused for a moment, raised his finger and said, “Young man, when I throw you one ball, you can catch it. When I throw you four balls, you catch nothing! So when you teach, make only one point at a time”. As Ms Cain concluded, the story provided “a simple but profound message, about teaching or learning any difficult task, including golf: Keep your thoughts simple and work on one key at a time”.

More about “Golf and Life” from Mr. Albert Einstein: * “Try not to become a man of success. Rather become a man of value”. * “Any fool can know, the point is to understand”. * “I am thankful for all of those who said NO to me. It’s because of them I’m doing it myself ”. * “The value of achievement lies in the achieving”. * “Life is like riding a bicycle, you must keep moving”. * “Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution”. * “Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better”. * “The only thing more dangerous than ignorance is arrogance”. * “Fear or stupidity has always been the basis of most human actions”. * “Education is what remains after one has forgotten what one has learned in school”. And finally…”NEVER give up on what you want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than the one with all the facts”. The Law of Realivity…it works every time. Thank you Mr. Einstein.

Caz girls track wins another sectional B-2 meet by Kurt WHeeler

The Cazenovia girls track and field squad capped an exceptional season of team competition with a decisive victory in the Section III Class B-2 championship Meet on May 26. Leveraging its unequaled depth to place in 17 of 19 events, the Lakers scored 142.5 points to outpace Skaneateles (92) and 10 other teams for their fifth sectional title. Seventeen different girls scored for Cazenovia in the well-balanced win. The Laker relays led the way, with all three capturing sectional championships in their events in State Qualifier eligible times. The 4x800 team of Claire Braaten, Nadia Segall, Faith Wheeler (personal best 800 meter split of 2:33.9) and Dinah Gifford (personal best of 2:31.9) kicked off the meet with a season best of 10:18.33 to capture first place. Minutes later, the 4x100 ran their fastest time of the season with Melanie Michael, Grace Dolan, Corinne Albicker and Katie Whitney sprinting to victory in 52.07 seconds. Dolan returned at the end of the meet to lead off the 4x400 team

of Wheeler, Olivia Ruddy and Meghan Mehlbaum. The speedy foursome cruised to first place in 4:19.12, nearly nine seconds ahead of second-place Lowville. Susie Pittman was the other individual champion for Cazenovia, taking first in the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet 11 1/4 inches. Even more impressive was the multitalented Freshman’s effort in the pole vault. While second overall with one more missed attempt than Clinton’s Claire Barone, Pittman tied the school record of 9 feet 6 inches with the best vault for the Lakers in a decade. She also added points in the long jump (third at 14’4”) and high jump (fourth at 4’8”). Pittman had plenty of help in the jumps as Albicker added points in the triple (third place, 31’2”) and long (fourth, 14’3 3/4”), Freshman Sophie Rheaume placed fifth in the long at 14’3” in her first sectional meet and veteran high jumper Katie Pavelchak took fifth at 4’6”. Cazenovia’s hurdlers also had a banner day. Senior captain Melanie Michael captured second in the 100 meter hurdles in a career best, State Qualifier eligible time of 16.93 sec-

onds, returning to earn third in the 400 meter hurdles in a season best of 1:12.07. Bonnie Pittman was close behind to capture fourth in a personal record time of her own at 1:13.06 as the Lakers totaled ten points in the event, eclipsing the pre-meet projection of one point. Senior Captain Katie Whitney was also in championship form, tying her career best in the 100 meter dash to earn third place and scoring in the 200 meter dash in addition to anchoring the 4x100 to victory. Dolan was also spectacular in the sprints, running a personal record time of 1:01.83 for third in the 400 and adding a third place 27.55 effort in the 200 on top of her two relay victories. Mary Williams also ran a personal best time of 28.68 in the 200. The Lakers’ distance runners contributed heavily to the team victory, led by Gifford, who took third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:09.6) and fifth in the 3,000-meter run. Claire Braaten was third in the 800 and also added points in the 3,000 while Olivia Wong also doubled up, scoring in the 1,500 and

The sectional championship victory was the final team competition for the Lakers, who also earned an undefeated regular season league title and an OHSL Liberty Meet crown during the spring.

Caz boys track dominates sectional Class B-2 meet by Mike Millson

The Cazenovia varsity boys outdoor track team dominated the Section III Class B-2 championships held May 26 at Little Falls High School scoring 147 points, well ahead of second place Clinton with 102. All season, team members had wondered, “Where is Little Falls?”, and “Why is sectionals so far away (an hour and 15 minutes)?”. It all made sense when they saw the great facilities and looked across the track to a stunning view of a valley stretching into the horizon. For once this season, the weather was nearly perfect - a little breezy, but sunny, and the temperature was nearly perfect in the mid 70s. Andrew Kent took full advantage and had a day for the ages, winning two individual events and propelling the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays to victory. Kent broke his own school record in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 22.40 seconds, ahead of Canastota great Devon Youker, and was not challenged in the 400, winning with a time of 51.64. The Lakers have now won every sectional meet since 2018, the year Kent joined the team as an eighth-grader. Other individual event winners were Brandon McColm in the 1,600 meters with a personal record time of 4:50.29 and Cassidy Gilmore in the 800 meters with 2:07.03, just ahead of team-

mate Cooper Hughes at 2:07.19. Cazenovia won all three relays with season best times. The 4x100 team of Kent, JP Hoak, Elijah Clement and Andrew Lee avenged their loss to Clinton at the Junkyard Relays with a time of 45.24 seconds. Also, the 4x400 meter relay team of Hughes, Kent, Dan Millson and Jaden Kaplan posted a time of 3:36.63 to win a close battle with Skaneateles. The 4x800 meter relay team of McColm, Hughes, Gilmore and Michael Senehi was well ahead of the field with a time of 8:32.87. The Lakers dominated at 1,600 meters. In addition to McColm’s win, Gilmore finished in third place in 5:00.55 and Will Austin fifth in 5:09.22. The pole vault was another event with three Lakers scoring. Killian Blouin set a personal record with a height of 10 feet for fourth place, and Sam Wilcox and Clement both clearing 9’6” for fifth and sixth place, respectively. Michael Senehi set two personal records on the day, going 11:17.4 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for second place and taking fourth place in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:04.89. Others setting personal records with scoring performances included Connor Frisbie, who was second in the 110 in 17.85 seconds; Quinn Smith, third place in the pentathlon with 1,940 points, and Millson in fifth place in the 400 sprint in 54.08.

Cazenovia baseball team falls just short of sectional crown by Phil Blackwell

To the last out and the last strike, the Cazenovia baseball team battled, and by doing so nearly claimed the Section III Class B championship. True, a five-run deficit proved a bit too much to overcome as the Lakers fell, 5-4, to Westhill in last Monday’s sectional title game at Onondaga Community College. But the mere fact that it was that close, and that tense, was a tribute to Cazenovia’s resilience, built through an up-and-down early portion of the regular season and then culminating with a rise from a no. 8 seed in a memorable post-season run. Having already knocked out top seed South Jefferson in the quarterfinals on May 26, the Lakers took

it further by making it through the semifinal two days later, holding off no. 12 seed Marcellus 4-3. Both pitchers - Jack Byrnes for Cazenovia, John Francesconi for Marcellus - were on three days’ rest. But it was the Lakers getting the jump in the bottom of the first as, with two on and nobody out, Jack Donlin singled and an error in right field allowed both runs to score and Donlin to reach third, where he would score on a sacrifice fly. Marcellus got one back in the top of the third and scored again in the top of the fifth to cut it to 3-2. But Cazenovia answered in the bottom of the fifth thanks to Byrnes’ fly-ball double and three ground balls, the last of which Jacob Grevelding beat out which allowed Byrnes to score. Still down by two in the top of

the seventh, Marcellus had one more chance. Sullivan drew a fourpitch walk and then, with two out and Tyler Szalach pitching in relief, a botched grounder allowed Sullivan to score. With the tying run on base, Szalach coaxed Hunter Byrne to fly out to end it. Two days later, Cazenovia would go after the sectional title, pitching Donlin, who had faced Westhill back on May 11 and, hurt by lots of poor defense around him, took an 11-1 loss. In the first, third and fourth innings, the Lakers put two runners on base, but could not turn them into runs against Warriors pitcher Mike Madigan, who would ultimately go six innings and accumulate 10 strikeouts. Also, in the bottom of the first

Madigan delivered a triple and scored when Taden Chester beat out an infield hit after Aiden Kerr’s single, two grounders and a passed ball produced the game’s first run. It was still 2-0 when, with two out in the bottom of the fourth and two on, freshman Anthony Sampo, Westhill’s no. 9 hitter, hit a triple to the gap that scored both runs and then ran home on a wild pitch. Donlin would not allow any more runs, and in the top of the sixth, A.J. Rothfeld sparked a comeback with his patience - and then his daring on the base paths. Rothfeld and Jacob Grevelding reached base, then went to second and third on a double steal. Then Rothfeld pulled off a rare straight steal of home, getting the Lakers on the board as, moments later, Szalach

singled home Grevelding. That was a prelude to a lot more drama in the seventh inning. Tyler Campbell, relieving Madigan, got Taven Reilley to fly out. But then Byrnes tripled and, with two out and the Warriors one strike away from victory, a wild pitch scored Byrnes, making it 5-3. Rothfeld then walked again, moved to second on a wild pitch, reached third when Grevelding singled and scored off yet another pitch. Campbell walked Clarke, and the tying and go-ahead runs were on base. But Campbell regrouped and, against Szalach, made him look at a called strike three, ending the game and the Lakers’ memorable championship quest.

Wheeler reported that the village ended its fiscal year on May 31 “in the black.” “[These are] challenging years, we have a lot of uncertainty and a lot of unknowns,” he said. “We did end up with our cash reserve in that healthy range of between 15 and 20 percent. We were about 19.8 [percent], largely due to probably some increases in sales tax.” Wheeler also reminded the

Eagle News • CNY’s Community News Source board that in May the board approved the use of the village streets for the 49th Annual July 4th Foot Races and the traditional Fourth of July Parade. The 10-mile race will begin at 8 a.m., the 5K will start at 8:15 a.m., and the Kids Fun Run will start at 8:20 a.m. “I think it’s the oldest continually going road race in Central New York,” Wheeler noted. Runners can sign up at runsignup.com/Race/NY/Cazenovia/CazJuly4thFootRaces. Organized by Project CAFÉ and the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce, the parade will line up on the Village Green at 12:30 p.m., step off 1 p.m., and proceed along its normal pre-pandemic route. The Independence Day festivities will conclude with music and fireworks at Lakeland Park. According to the mayor, work on Lakeland Park’s historic stone wall — specifically the wall along the swim area — is underway. Expert Building Services, of Cazenovia, is replacing

the existing stone wall with a poured concrete wall covered with a historic stone veneer. River Rock Dock, of Chittenango, is providing the cofferdams, which are enclosures built within a body of water to allow the enclosed area to be pumped out to create a dry working environment. “There are some additional challenges with the dewatering, just because of the height of that wall compared to the lower ones, but we are working on that and I’m sure we will get that resolved quickly,” said Wheeler. “That work will be ongoing.” Once the current phase of work is done, the village plans to complete the sections of the wall that are not near the swim area and then figure out a plan for repairing damages farther up the canal near Carpenter’s Barn. The board scheduled its next regular monthly meeting for Wednesday, July 6. The Village of Cazenovia Board of Trustees typically meets on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. in the village municipal building, 90 Albany St.

Cazenovia PD installs medication disposal kiosk In partnership with BRiDGES and the Madison County Department of Health, the Cazenovia Police Department has installed a safe medication disposal kiosk in the foyer of the police station. Safely disposing of unused or expired medications is one way we can work together to help prevent the misuse of medications. Using the disposal kiosk also keeps medications out of the water supply. “The Village of Cazenovia is proud to partner with BRiDGES to support this community-based program to reduce access to surplus medications that might cause harm to our children or families,” Village of Cazenovia Mayor Kurt Wheeler said. The kiosk will be available to the public from 8 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. People can dispose of their unused or expired prescription or over the counter medications by dropping them in the kiosk during operating hours. When disposing of medications at the kiosk, people can leave their medications in the original packaging. Pills, liquids and patches can be disposed of at the kiosk. Funding for this kiosk was provided through an award made by the Central New York Community Foundation. “We are thrilled to have this option for people to be able to dispose of their unused medications. This program keeps narcotics not just off the streets, but also out of our water supplies as well,” said Chief Hayes.

Over the past decade, BRiDGES has worked with communities in Madison County to install five other kiosks. Those kiosks can be found in Wampsville, Hamilton, Oneida, and Chittenango. Since kiosks have been installed in some communities, BRiDGES has also been able to offer Deterra Drug Deactivation pouches to community members that are unable to get to a kiosk. These pouches can be used at home and are environmentally friendly. If you or someone you know is in need of at-home medication disposal, call BRiDGES at 315-697-3947. For questions about safe syringe disposal call BRiDGES or the Madison County Department of Health at 315-366-2361. BRiDGES, Madison County Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse, Inc., is a notfor-profit prevention agency. For the past 35 years, BRiDGES has been a leader in providing advocacy, resources, and services to the community, the workforce, families, and individuals through the delivery of prevention and intervention programs that promote change, strengthen families, and build healthy communities.
