On Aug. 8, the Cazenovia Town Board adopted a resolution authorizing Supervisor Bill Zupan to execute a letter of support to the Office of Planning, Development and Community Infrastructure for the Village of Cazenovia’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) grant application. The Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA) applied for the grant on behalf of the village to study options for addressing ongoing issues related to Mill Street dam — one of two dams downstream of the outlet at the south end of the lake. The lake dam (upper dam), which controls the level of the lake, is located near Carpenter’s Pond. Mill Street dam (lower dam or creek

A shotgun start is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $125 per individual player and $500 per four-person team. NCODA is a grassroots organization committed to helping “medically integrated oncology teams” to deliver patient-centered care by providing leadership, expertise, quality standards, and best practices. According to NCODA Founder and Executive Director Michael Reff, RPh, MBA, a medically integrated oncology team within a practice or institution consists of the doctors, advanced practice providers including physician assistant or nurse practitioner, pharmacists, nurses, technicians, etc. that are working together to provide optimal care to patients following a cancer diagnosis. A central aspect of NCODA’s work is supporting cancer care professionals in the medically integrated dispensing [MID] of cancer therapies. Caz College’s longest serving faculty member to retire By kate Hill Staff Writer

Recently, Dr. John Robert (Bob) Greene, the Paul J. Schupf Professor of History and Humanities at Cazenovia College, announced his upcoming retirement, effective January 2023. Greene, who has served the institution for over 42 years, is currently the college’s longest serving faculty member. He started at the institution in September 1979 as a part-time instructor while also serving as a manager of the campus radio station, WITC-FM. Greene became a full-time faculty member in 1984 and was tenured in 1987. He was named Distinguished Faculty Member in 1993, awarded the college’s first endowed chair — the Paul J. Schupf Chair in History and Humanities — in 2000, and received the college’s Distinguished Service Award in 2020. Greene founded Cazenovia College’s social science and history majors; cofounded the dual major in history and social science with Jody Hicks, D.A., assistant professor of social sciences; and introduced the Washburn Junior Research and Teaching Fellowship Programs and the Wheler Great Lives Speaker Series. The professor/writer is currently chair of the social and behavioral sciences division, director of the history program, codirector of the dual major in history and social science, college archivist, director of the Washburn Junior Research and Teaching Fellowship Programs, co-director of the Wheler Great Lives Speaker Series, and advisor to the Alpha Chi Honor Society. In 2002, Greene and his family endowed the Mary Rose Greene Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior student pursuing a degree in

social sciences or history. “Dr. Greene’s scholarly contributions and teaching have been noteworthy for the entirety of his impressive tenure,” said Cazenovia College President David Bergh in an Aug. 2 press release announcing Greene’s retirement. “His work and reputation have raised the profile of the college and he will be greatly missed.” Greene, who is originally from Syracuse and now lives in Chittenango, earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history from St. Bonaventure University in 1977 and 1979, respectively. He was awarded a Ph.D. in American History from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University in 1983. Greene credits one of his St. Bonaventure professors with steering him towards a career in education. According to Greene, he was majoring in history and on a pre-law track when his professor recognized something in him that he thought “would work in a classroom.” “He set up a student teaching gig for me at Allegany High School, and I fell in love with teaching there,” said Greene. When he returned to Syracuse to pursue his Ph.D., a job became available at Cazenovia College, and he jumped at the opportunity to teach. According to Greene, the most significant change to the college since his arrival has been its expansion from a women’s junior college to a four-year coeducational institution. Cazenovia College started accepting men in fall 1983 and then transitioned from a two-year college to a four-year college in fall 1988. “Those two decisions paved the way for other changes that would come in the 1990s, 2000s and up to today, most notably the [introduction of a] graduate program,”

Not only has he served as a mentor/advisor to students on campus, but he has also kept in touch with many alumni as they moved on to graduate schools and employment. Greene said he is also especially proud of his work creating the college’s Frederic and Jean Williams Archives. He recalled that while exploring the Greene l Page 13

By kate Hill Staff Writer On Friday, Aug. 5, Madison County District Attorney (DA) William Gabor announced in a statement that a member of his office had offered his resignation following “a life-threatening incident” in the Town of Nelson on July 30, 2022. According to a statement issued by the Madison County Sheriff ’s Office on Aug. 5, deputies and the Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps (CAVAC) were dispatched to a Nelson residence — later determined to be that of Assistant District Attorney Bradley J. Moses, 44 — at approximately 8:55 p.m. regarding a possible overdose. The 911 caller advised the responders that two individuals were unconscious and unresponsive inside the residence, the sheriff ’s office said. Upon arrival, deputies found two subjects inside who were unconscious with agonal breathing — a medical term used to describe struggling to breathe or gasping for air. The sheriff ’s office reported that both individuals were given multiple doses of Narcan by the deputies and CAVAC personnel and then transported to Syracuse area hospitals for treatment. Both subjects were treated and released. Narcan is a brand name of naloxone, which is designed to rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. According to the sheriff ’s office, witnesses advised the responders that the two victims had ingested a substance purported to be cocaine prior to becoming unconscious and unresponsive. The sheriff ’s office also said deputies recovered a sample of the purported narcotics during the execution of a search warrant. The sample field tested positive for fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that is up to 50 times more potent than heroin and, according to the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, 50100 times stronger than morphine. In his Aug. 5 statement, Gabor reported that the DA’s office was aware of “a life-threatening incident” that occurred on July 30 in Nelson. “The Madison County Sheriff ’s Office responded and is completing its investigation,” Gabor said. “One of the individuals involved was a member of the District Attorney’s Office. He is completing a Family Leave application to address a personal problem and has offered his resignation; which will be accepted.” Moses, who is running for Madison County Court Judge, described a different version of the July 30 incident in a statement posted on his campaign page, Bradmoses.com. He recounts that after returning home from a golf tournament on Saturday night, he lost consciousness and was taken to a Syracuse emergency room, where, after several tests, it was determined that he had acute kidney fail-

dam), which was built in 1857 to serve the Erie Canal system, is a little further downstream. Just east (downstream) of the lake dam, Chittenango Creek meets the water flowing out of the lake to form a single channel. When the water level between the dams is high, significant rain and snow melt events can cause the water to flow the wrong way; instead of moving downstream, the water backflows over the lake dam and into the lake, carrying with it significant amounts of sediment and pollutants. Zupan’s letter explained that the introduction of significant sediment and pollutants into the lake over the years is making the lake shallower in “critical economic and recreational areas” adjacent to the village. “The additional sediment brings nutrients and phosphorous into the lake which worsens weed and algae growth including the increase of Harmful Algae which is a toxin that can harm both

animals and humans,” Zupan wrote. “A 2017 study has concluded that Cazenovia Lake contributes approximately $11 million of economic activity to the region annually.” Zupan then highlighted back flow events as a major contributor to the significant sediment and pollution inflow. “The Mill Street dam which is just downstream is the main cause of the incidents of back flow,” Zupan wrote. According to Zupan, the project will advance a solution to the back flow problem by completing the preliminary design and permitting for a partial removal of Mill Street dam and a stream restoration between the two dams. “The outcome will be a shovel ready solution for final design and implementation,” Zupan wrote. “Once constructed, this solution will eliminate back flow incidents and restore the creek to a natural state. This will enhance the natural beauty of this waterfront and restore habitat. Most importantly, it will stop the pollution and degradation

of Cazenovia Lake which is a critical resource to the region.” According to CACDA Executive Director Lauren Lines, the village will not find out if the grant has been awarded until December of this year. In addition to authorizing the execution of the letter, the adopted resolution also authorizes a grant match of $21,625, if an alternate funding source cannot be secured. “They are going for a grant, and they needed [approximately] $21,000 for their match, and the town has said that they’d put up the money to do the match,” explained Zupan, who also pointed out that approximately ninety percent of the lake is in the town.

plained that the town is committed to working with local partners, including CCSD, the Village of Cazenovia, and the Town of Nelson, to investigate opportunities to enhance efficiency and reduce costs through the sharing of bus/ highway garage infrastructure and resources. “Also, in anticipation of the upcoming NYS mandate for electric school buses and interest from the municipalities in transitioning to electric vehicles where possible, the project partners will determine the feasibility of shared electric vehicle charging infrastructure,” Zupan wrote. According to the letter, the

town will commit a cash match equal to $3,125 for the project. “Strategically planning with a proactive approach for future highway and bus garage needs, including electric vehicle charging infrastructure, will allow our local governments to take advantage where cost savings exist and implement needed upgrades as effectively as possible,” Zupan concluded. Additionally, the board adopted a resolution authorizing the supervisor to enter an intermunicipal agreement and license with the Town of DeRuyter. The agreement and license will allow DeRuyter temporary use of the Town of

Cazenovia’s weed harvester and associated equipment with Cazenovia employee operators to periodically address weed growth in DeRuyter Lake. “We were asked if our weed harvester was available on DeRuyter Lake, and [Highway Superintendent Bryan Smith] said we could have time for one week down there, so we are making an agreement with the Town of DeRuyter,” said Zupan. Due to the heat, the board decided to skip the monthly reports from the attorney, supervisor, and councilors. The meeting adjourned after less than 15 minutes.

During the regular monthly meeting, the board also adopted a resolution authorizing Zupan to execute a letter of support to the New York State Department of State for a joint application submitted by Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD) for a shared bus/ highway garage and EV charging infrastructure study. According to Moses, a toxicology screen performed at the hospital showed that there were no illegal drugs in his system. “I recognize I have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol that requires I receive the necessary help to overcome,” Moses wrote. “I have taken a medical leave from the District Attorney’s office and I have already begun taking the appropriate measures to get better. Ziggy wants to join your band Submitted by Donna Newman Photo by CNY SPCA What’s the difference between a deaf dog and a hearing dog? Not as much as you’d think. In fact, during the course of their lifetime, many dogs lose their hearing. Ziggy has big, perky ears but ironically is deaf. Ziggy doesn’t let this hold him back; he’s incredibly energetic and lively, and is looking for an active home that will give him the mental and physical stimulation that every dog deserves. He’s a 5-year-old mixed breed with a quirky smile and halfside underbite. Ziggy’s very smart and absolutely loves to snuggle. He’s a volunteer favorite and has successfully completed a basic training class. Ziggy can be around dogs, but he would do best in an adult home without cats or dogs. He’s eager to learn and will thrive with a patient and understanding adopter who’ll continue his training. He also enjoys car rides and is patient in the bath. Ziggy was brought to us as a stray and quickly became a shelter favorite with his heart-warming personality. He was adopted but was a victim of the pandemic and was returned. Ziggy originally came to the shelter in September of 2019, he was adopted in June of 2020, and returned in October of 2021. At this time, Ziggy has spent more of his adult life in a shelter than in a home. Good things happen in golf…. When you least expect it! Do you remember the worst round of golf you have ever played? Do you remember the best round? The answer is, of course, an emphatic YES! Our brain seems to never allow us to forget either our worst or best of anything we do and golf is no exception. Take Tiger Woods for instance. He shot scores of: * 85 in the 3rd round of the 2015 Memorial Tournament * 82 in the 2nd round of the 2015 Phoenix Open * 81 in the 3rd round of the 2002 British Open * 80 in the 1st round of the 2015 US Open He also shot scores of: * 61 in the 1999 Byron Nelson Tournament (1st round) * 61 in the 2000 WGC-NEC INTERNATIONAL (2nd round) * 61 in the 2005 Buick Open (2nd round) How is it possible for Tiger to be as many as 24 strokes worse from “his best to worst”? It has simply been described as, “that’s golf ” by literally thousands of instructors, coaches, psychologists, friends and strangers for at least the last five hundred years. We don’t like it much, but that’s the way it is. I got a call last week from Jim Lerch, long time CNY radio sports talk host of “The Manchild Show”, formally, “Bud and the Manchild”. He asked me to sub for his partner Kurt in the golf league he plays in at the Links at Erie Village. I said yes because I have known Jim for over 20 years, played a lot of golf with him, and thought it would be nice to get together for old times. Besides, I consider him a good friend and he was the one who hired me at Clear Channel (currently I Heart Radio) over twenty years ago. He said my handicap would be determined by the score I shoot that night. He also told me he shot the worst 9 hole round of golf (53) in his league the previous week. I knew what was coming. That same weekend, he played with three friends and asked me, “What do you think I shot”? I said, “70 what”? He said, “76”. I congratulated him and said I was looking forward to playing with him. Three weeks ago, I shot an 88 at Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club (my home course) in the qualifying round of the CNYSG Match Play Championship. It was the first time in over 4.5 years I shot “over my age”. I made a 7 on the par 3, 4th hole, by taking 6 putts to finally hole

I “skulled” my 50 yard approach shot over the green and watched my ball bounce down the parking lot between the cars, to the grass area in front of Oneida Lake…about 100 yards beyond the green. I received a text message at 9:51PM that evening from Greg Cohen, who runs the league on Thursday nights at The Links at Erie Village. His message is sent to all members of the league each week after the 9 hole round. The following is part of his message… “Jim Lerch sent me a text message on Monday morning to say he has a sub for his partner Kurt this week named Perry Noun. I know Perry from the radio and from following him in a couple of tournaments over the years. I tell Jim that he’s a true zero handicap. Jim responds that he WAS, but now that he is 85, I’m not sure of his handicap. Well, Mr. Perry Noun who has been a fixture in the CNY golf scene for almost 25 years had a good night. With 5 birdies and a gross score of 33, he has a league handicap of +2.25…the lowest handicap of any league member at Erie Village in the 15 years I’ve been running the league. Congratulations Mr. Noun. It was a pleasure meeting you in person and shaking your hand . You had a round for the ages and I only wish I could have played with you this evening to witness it. Thank you for all your contributions to this game. I wish you many more years of good health. If any of you want to hear what Perry has to say about the game, he hosts a radio show appropriately named, ‘Tee Time With The Pronoun’ on Saturday mornings at 7AM on 570AM”. Thank you Jim for asking me to be a sub in your golf league. Thank you Gregg for the kind words in your weekly message above. GOOD THINGS HAPPEN IN GOLF… WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT !

Half way point

So many things in life are a mater of perspective and summer is no exception. It seems like it was only a blink of an eye ago that we were celebrating Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Isn’t it kind of strange the way February, the shortest month, seems to last forever, while July goes by so fast that you have to wonder how all of a sudden it is August? This is the half way point of summer, before we know it, it will be Labor Day. But here is where perspective comes into play. None of us want to rush unnecessarily through summer and into fall if we can help it. It is all a matter of looking at the glass as half empty or half full, negatively or optimistically. While it can be easy to think of this in some negative light, summer being half way over already and it seems like it has barely started, there is a lot of optimism when we look at it with the right eyes. Summer is only half way over; there is still plenty of time to enjoy it. After several challenging years due to the pandemic, in the summer of 2022 things are closer to normal. With the return of many local and regional events and activities, this summer has provided a lot more opportunities to get out and enjoy these summer days. Even when the weather has not been ideal, with soaring temperatures, and heat and early on some intensely rainy days as spring transitioned into summer, we hope the first half of summer has been enjoyable and you did find a chance to see a musical performance or go to a community event or any number of other activities. The important thing is to make the time to enjoy it. There are the unavoidable realities of life, our duties and responsibilities from work, to chores around the house and innumerable others. But it is also important to remember that we all need to stop and take some time for the responsibilities we have to ourselves, our families and the other things we probably don’t give enough time and attention when we are caught in the day to day obligations of our lives. But it seems summer is a time when many make a point to pay at least a little more attention to these important details. There is that cliché of the long lazy days of summer, maybe it is the memory of summer vacations when we were younger, maybe it is the number of activities that correlate with the season, but whatever the reason, it seems this is a time when everyone wants to shake off some of their daily cares and spend a little time enjoying something special. Take some time, use these weeks of summer that are still ahead and find what will make you happy. We are fortunate to be surrounded by the bounty of nature in Central New York. With numerous lakes, trails, nature sites and camping, there are innumerable opportunities to get outside. For some it is as simple as a backyard fire and toasting marshmallows and making s’mores with the kids. For others it may be taking in a ball game and having a hotdog. For others it will be a concert or the bigger events still to come like the New York State Fair. But whatever it is, take the time to enjoy the long days of summer as much as you can and find the time to kick back and relax even for a little while.

Move it or lose it If you listen carefully, you can hear the admonition to get up and move everywhere. No more couch lizards … the pandemic is sort of over and you can now move past the softness of your sofa and the cold of your fridge to the wide world of movement. Isn’t it well known that exercise will enhance for the better, all parts of your life span including pandemic paunch? Knowing what little I know, the ever present and overarching “they” are right. You just have to move

Ramblings from the empty nest

Ann Ferro to feel at your best. Walking, belonging to and attending a gym, playing sports, dancing, gardening, etc. all make the parts that make up the physical and mental you work better. Believe it or not, movement makes you more energetic, aware and focused, a dramatic change from lethargic, oblivious and “what?” What exercise will meet

your requirements varies with your situation. Standing in front of the refrigerator, contemplating your next snack is not exercise and refusing to go to the gym because your spandex broke is not an excuse. What you do to get moving is a dynamic that is truly yours. You just have to figure it out. Figuring it out can have its challenges. Take, for instance, who the instructors are for movement of any kind. Most are around 22, weigh 110 pounds and are more ripped than a

washboard. They are attired in painted-on spandex that would, maybe, fit your right wrist. If that isn’t intimidating enough, they have a language that has terminology that reminds you of that day in physics class when the English language failed you. They describe movements that fall into one of many categories from “odd” to “that’s hysterical,” “bizarre” and “are you kidding?” which is very similar to “that ship has sailed.” One of the terms that is Move l Page 7

FROM THE MAILBAG

Julie Abbott is the right candidate To the editor: Having served in the New York State Senate for nearly three decades, I have seen the mechanisms of state government and worked with numerous local representatives to accomplish things for our shared constituencies. I know a good candidate, and a good future representative, when I see one. Julie Abbott is exactly what we need in the New York State Senate. Julie has fought for lower taxes, safer streets, and parent-first education. She has supported our police when it was unpopular on a national political scale and remains an ardent supporter of the rule of law. The safety of her neighbors and the families who live in our communities is her first priority in every decision she makes. She has a history of winning elections – not because of popularity or name ID – but because she shows up and does the work for the residents of her district. She takes stands for what is right and will go to bat for those she serves, even when it may not be popular. Not only is she the best choice, Julie is the only choice. She has the support of community leaders and the community itself. We must answer one simple question in the weeks and months ahead: Why on earth is Rachel May, an advocate for progressive far left policies, she still sitting in the New York State Senate? She simply does not share the values of residents in the 48th Senate District. This year, please join me in supporting Julie Abbott for New York State Senate. She will be a great Senator, and she is the right choice to bring common sense back to Albany. John DeFrancisco Former NYS Senator

Jim and Val Barr have welcomed the Cazenovia Lake Association Board of Directors to meet at their wonderful Inn each and every month. The staff is always kind and accommodating and we are provided the perfect setting to convene and address the most important issues facing our lake. Supermarket proposal

To the editor: As the citizens of Fayetteville consider attending a public hearing on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. to offer their opinions on the latest iteration of the supermarket proposal at 547 E. Genesee St., let us establish some clear facts: 1) The previous version of the supermarket proposal was in its core aspect (size, scope, and purpose of the major structure) nearly identical to the current proposal being considered; Managing Editor: Jennifer Wing, ext. 340, jwing@eaglenewsonline.com News Editor: Jason Gabak, ext. 319, jgabak@eaglenewsonline.com Reporter: Kate Hill , ext. 325, khill@eaglenewsonline.com Reporter: Jason Klaiber, jklaiber@eaglenewsonline.com Sports Editor: Phil Blackwell, ext. 348, pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Display Ads EB: Linda Jabbour, ext. 304, ljabbour@eaglenewsonline.com

2) As part of the SEQRA process, the Fayetteville Planning Board identified in the previous proposal at least 10 potentially significant adverse environmental impacts (both manmade and natural) out of a possible 18. These included things like storm water, traffic, light, noise, and character (the village law strategically limits structures to 10,000 sq. ft. while both proposals call for a 56,000 sq. ft. building); 3) The planning board’s finding triggered an Environmental Impact Study to address these potential impacts, the cost to be covered by the applicant. Instead of completing this costly study, the applicant withdrew and then re-submitted what is essentially the same proposal at its core; So, here we are in the same position. The applicant has tweaked a handful of elements but they have not resolved the previous findings. Keep in mind that state law dictates that, through SEQRA, only one potentially significant environmental impact is enough to trigger further study. I have great faith in the leadership of our planning board under Jane Rice and applaud the mayor for continuing to appoint someone with such a deep background in planning issues. As we approach this supposedly new application, I ask the board to address how their previous findings apply to this current proposal. I believe that a thorough SEQRA process will reveal that we are, in essence, at a similar juncture and that state law will dictate that an environmental impact statement is warranted. Please join me in submitting comments to the planning board through the village office or by attending the public meeting on Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m. so that your voice may be heard. From Open Farm Days

To the editor: On July 30, 2022, Madison County farms opened their doors for you all to come and see a day in the life of a farmer. On behalf of the staff of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County and the farmers, we cannot express enough, the deep appreciation for your involvement of Madison County’s Open Farm Day. This day is not possible without your support, your dedication, and most importantly your attendance. Our farms are the backbone of our community and your enthusiasm for Open Farm Day proves that you understand this. Open Farm Day is a huge economic driver for Madison County Farms, and it would not be possible without your engagement that day. Your earnest participation benefits not only the farms, but also their families, and the other outlets where their products are found such as restaurants and retail establishments. Open Farm Day would not have received the positive accolades it has, as expressed by the farmers and evident by their productivity, without the invaluable patronage of people like yourself. One of our farmers sent us a note saying, “We had a very busy day and had great conversation with so many people who stopped by.” Conversations are where it all begins. We learn from each other, grow from one another, and embrace different ways of thinking through

Frustrated with response in DeWitt To the editor: DeWitt – the land of Oz with a façade of parks, trails and bike paths. But pull back the curtain and the watch the Wizard work the wheel of deception. In May 2022, DeWitt water department had some street pipes replaced. The contractor took the liberty of utilizing the front lawns to park their heavy equipment which caused destruction to my frontage. Two personal visits to town offices and three letters later in June and July – the last being to Supervisor Edward Michalenko to ask who will be responsible to remediate the damage? None of the letter recipients responded. Finally, July 27, a highway man was at my door to tell me that the work had been done. Really? A messy, throw down topping of lumpy, rocky soil? I have been a resident and property taxpayer for 66 years. Unfortunately, there are no magic red slippers to click and return courtesy, oath of office and do the right thing, to the DeWitt that was!

Thanks to the garden club

To the editor: On behalf of the Fayetteville Free Library staff, patrons and board, I would like to offer a heartfelt thank you to the Fayetteville Garden Club for their ongoing beautification of the grounds surrounding the front of our building. In 2002, the library purchased the former Stickley Furniture Factory building (at our current location at 300 Orchard St.). Over the decades to follow, the Fayetteville Garden Club has continuously worked to plant and maintain attractive landscaping around the entrance of our historic building. Recently, the Garden Club added new landscaping to the east side of our entrance including a lush barrel planter, and a memory garden on the west side of our building featuring large boulders donated by Kinsella Quarries. We truly appreciate the hard work of the Fayetteville Garden Club and encourage everyone to stop by and enjoy their efforts. Heather Matzel, Executive Director Fayetteville Free Library

Russell

Years Ago in History 150 years ago – Aug. 8, 1872

The heavy stone work needed to carry the extension of the Cazenovia and Canastota railway over the mill-races and creek is employing a good many men. The arch over the race is now done, and the workmen are engaged in placing deep foundations under the abutments for an iron bridge, which is to span the mill-pond north of Albany Street. All this work is being built in the strong, permanent style that has characterized all the masonry done since Mr. Fairchild came into the railway management, and beyond doubt it is true economy to avoid repairs in the structures on a railway that are so all important to the safety of the trains.

130 years ago – Aug. 11, 1892

Our summer visitors, and residents of leisure are to be congratulated upon the establishment of the Cazenovia club, and the successful completion of the club’s new home, the “club house.” It was formally opened Tuesday afternoon by a public reception, in a ball for the members and their friends in the evening. Two hundred invitations were issued for the reception and nearly all of those invited were present. The wives of the club members acted as reception committee and conspicuous among them, in their efforts to entertain the select assemblage, were Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs. Wendell, Mrs. Park, and Mrs. Barclay. Refreshments were served and an orchestra was present to enliven the occasion with music. The club house is a handsome building on the colonial style of architecture, and is fitted up simply as a place of amusement for its members. It stands a short distance from the street and the naturally low ground between the street and the building has been handsomely graded up so that the entrance is upon the second floor.

confusing is “core.” Now I’ve known all of the body parts for some time. I aced anatomy and physiology, reassembled whole skeletons and never became acquainted with a part called core. If it is like the core of apples then it is something that extends through the middle of your body from head to toe. Or… is it more specific (I looked this up) extending from the last rib to the part of your body where the effluents “exit?” Basically,

many opposed to the cause. The suffragists had a mass meeting in the town hall last Tuesday night, and next Wednesday night the anti-suffragists will hold a like meeting to bring before the public the points against suffrage. The agitation of suffrage was started by a number of our summer visitors, who planned to meet here for their battlefield. They have been confronted by the “antis,” which are composed of townspeople. A number of women opposed to suffrage met last week with Mr. E Remington, and plans were made for the mass meeting, with Mrs. Remington being made chairman of the committee of arrangements. The meeting next Wednesday night will be addressed by Miss Alice Hill Chittenden. The antisuffragists ask the townspeople to suspend judgment upon this important question until reasons for opposing it may be properly laid before them.

It gives us great pleasure to state that owing to the unprecedented enthusiasm and expression shown by the many Cazenovians and visitors and the demand for a continuance of this exhibition being shown in his home, we, the Art Committee, take pleasure in announcing that the same will remain open until Sept. 1. Also it is our pleasure to reproduce herewithin an article pertaining to the said exhibition which appeared in the Syracuse Post Standard, graciously written by Miss Anna W. Olmsted, Directress of the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. A memorial exhibition of pastels by the late Dwight Williams opened yesterday in Cazenovia and will continue until Aug. 10, inclusive. Fitting it is that this exhibition should have been held in his home at Cazenovia. For here, in the little house half hidden by the green trees he loved so well, Dwight Williams dreamed his dreams and wrought his miracles in his favorite medium pastel. And irresistibly reminded of a personality rarely endowed and never to be forgotten, we sigh for the touch of a vanished hand that was indeed a master’s hand.

it is your abdomen, which is not to be confused with your stomach, although your stomach and parts higher up are often the reason why you have to work on your core and other places. So what does a good core do for you? According to lots of articles, the muscles in this area are responsible for balance (along with your ears,) body stability when moving, good posture, help with back pain, increased ability to do ordinary chores, protection of internal organs and making getting older not so awful. Any exercise for me that starts with “get down on the floor” is an “are you kidding?” Others that require balancing on one leg fall into the same category. Believe it or not, there are perfectly good core exercises that can be done while sitting. For me that is as venturesome as it is going to get. or Larry Bird. It’s funny how some in Boston bristled at Russell not staying there after his playing days, labeling him as “difficult” and “arrogant”, as if he didn’t have reason to feel hurt and disrespected. Sure, he was great at basketball, but Russell was not about to play any other games society wanted. Retirement ceremony? He did it in private at Boston Garden. Autographs? Forget it, he would rather have a conversation than turn into a commodity. Within the basketball community, there was a sense of awe and reverence for Russell not reserved for anyone else. Other legends, past and present, were glad to brandish their name and soak up the adoration of fans and media alike. Russell preferred, always, to keep to himself. Safe to say, there’s no way a Bill Russell could happen if he arrived in 2022. Everyone would ask him to smile more, put in more baskets, tell him to drift outside and learn to shoot from deep, and try to minimize all of the social conscience that once was an asset, but is now a source of mockery. And that doesn’t even cover the way a multimedia universe would frame, re-frame, dissect and dismantle every play or every pronouncement, making us sick of the topic and, by turn, killing our appreciation for the player, and the man. However, they don’t pin a Presidential Medal of Freedom on someone solely for championships. Memorials are not composed by people in walks of life far beyond basketball for people who just rebounded and blocked shots. You want a proper tribute to Bill Russell? Don’t write it or put it in stone. Rather, if you are an athlete, do everything you can to make sure your teammates have a chance to win and, when that is done, use your platform to address the wrongs all around you, whether people listen or not. Maybe Russell didn’t convince everyone in his lifetime. But when he left for his heavenly reward, everyone instantly understood the irreplaceable void he leaves us.

Compare that with the wobbly, clumsy, shambling and often shuffling gait that I present, and fixing my core seems to be a good idea. The movements that bulk up my deltoids, biceps and leg muscles, etc. are really far too little unless my core is strong. Of course I am assuming that I will work on these things while seated too. From page 1 pies for cancer patients.” NCODA believes that, when done correctly, MID allows for multiple advantages over alternative methods, including mailorder (“specialty”) pharmacies. For example, under the MID model, medically integrated teams can communicate effectively, thereby eliminating ambiguity; health care providers can easily access a patient’s medical records to help prescribers make more informed decisions; the cancer centers can work with the payer/employer group to ensure cost savings and enhance patient satisfaction; the cancer centers can prevent unnecessary drugs from being delivered to patients, thereby reducing waste and saving money for patients and the healthcare system; the MID service can better track medications and support continuity of care; the pharmacist and patient care team can better communicate with the patient and engage with them on managing their side effects, financial assistance, and overall care. According to NCODA, the enhanced care that comes from MID leads to substantial cost savings, timely dispensing of correct prescriptions, better patient adherl

ence to medications, and maximized beneficial patient outcomes and satisfaction. Reff, a Cazenovia resident, established NCODA as a non-profit in 2015. “Having led the development of a medically integrated pharmacy (The Patient Rx Center) at Hematology Oncology Associates of Central New York in Syracuse, I realized that the cancer care community needed an organization to develop standardized healthcare professional- and patient-centered resources,” said Reff. “Clinical fragmentation in oncology often leads to a myriad of complications for patients, including delayed treatment. My mission in starting NCODA was to turn the industry right-side up and help cancer centers better manage their patients, so they receive the right treatment at the right time.” The organization has grown from just two employees in 2015 to 24 employees in 2022; nine of the employees are locally employed at NCODA’s 9 Albany St. office and others work remotely from the Albany area, Oklahoma, Colorado, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Washington, Florida, Virginia, and Alabama. NCODA started out by developing a set of quality standards for cancer centers

and then expanded on that work by creating and developing the “Going Beyond the First Fill” model for dispensing oral anticancer medications. According to Reff, NCODA coined the Going Beyond the First Fill phrase/ methodology when it helped several of its member cancer centers in New York, New Jersey, South Carolina, and Utah earn the right from health insurance companies to keep the dispensing of oral anti-cancer medications within their MID pharmacies beyond the traditionally allowed first fill. “In essence, [MID] pharmacies prove value to health insurance companies through better patient management and cost savings to the healthcare system, and [thus] earn the right to allow the patient to fill their cancer medication within the integrated pharmacy, as opposed to the traditionally mandated way of filling through a large [pharmacy benefit manager-owned] mail-order pharmacy. This improves speed to treatment, overall adherence, and coordination of care.” Today, NCODA’s membership includes nurses, pharmacists, physicians, advanced practice providers, administrators, pharmacy technicians, directors, managers, patient advocates, and financial support staff. Together, the members are part of an international healthcare professional community that works with MID pharmacy teams to provide tools and resources that support better patient care. According to Reff, NCODA supports its members primarily through education and the sharing of quality standards. NCODA provides many complimentary resources to its members, including educational webinars, in-person international meetings several times per year, NCODA’s Quality Standards (in collaboration with the American Society of Clinical Oncology), standard operating procedure documents called Positive Quality Interventions (PQI), patient and healthcare professional education sheets on oral and IV anti-cancer medications, the oncologyspecific journal “Oncolytics Today,” oncology legislative updates, a community for peer-to-peer mentorship and the sharing of critical oncology updates, and tools for

patient assistance and data reporting (e.g., the Cost Avoidance & Waste Tracker tool and financial assistance). The organization continues to expand its reach to include healthcare students by building its international Professional Student Organization (PSO) chapters at schools/colleges of pharmacy. The PSOs provide pharmacy students with an opportunity to learn about the field of oncology and network with like-minded students from across the globe. “Based on several years of research, NCODA learned that oncology is a therapeutic area that pharmacy students in the US and abroad don’t receive much training in prior to graduation,” explained Reff. “NCODA saw this as an opportunity to fill the gap, supporting student development in oncology from a patient-centered approach. . . Our goal is to empower future oncology leaders.” NCODA serves its 50 established PSO chapters through in-person and virtual education, mentorship, and networking opportunities. All proceeds from the Driving Cancer Care Forward golf tournament will support the continuation of NCODA’s student professional development initiatives, such as its PSO chapters, its Cazenovia High School scholarship, and its opportunities for pharmacy students from across the US and Canada to work alongside its clinical pharmacist team members to develop oncology patient resources and tools. The NCODA Cazenovia High School Scholarship awards $500 to students interested in the oncology field. Since its establishment in 2020, the scholarship has been awarded to three students. The organization’s student-led oncology patient education resources include PQI, treatment support kits, oncology legislative tracker, cancer screening resources, a national bone marrow registry, and professional articles focused on educating pharmacy technicians on cancer medications. Gaut (Hunt), 64, of Chittenango, passed away peacefully July 30, 2022, in the company of her loving family and with her loyal pup, Jojo, by her side in the home where they all grew together. Linda was born on April 12, 1958, in Syracuse, to Arthur Hunt and his beloved Edith Hunt (Culver), both predeceased. On Oct. 23, 1976, Linda married the love of her life, Ricky L. Gaut—soon to be Ricky L. Gaut, “Sr.” A short drive west down the interstate I-90 and the newlyweds would find themselves in Niagara Falls, then dubbed the Honeymoon Capital of the World. The following year, Linda and Rick would begin raising the first of their three “prides and joys,” Ricky, Jr. A brother, Michael and a sister, Jennifer, would come to follow. Each would be born nearly three years apart. Linda was an accomplished and devoted mother, daughter, wife, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She dedicated her life to be-

Linda S. Gaut ing the greatest mother that any child could dream of, and she was an indispensable administrator for her husband’s businesses in both commercial and residential contracting (R.L. On top of that, Linda had gainful employment at a former USPS Remote Encoding Center, and she built lifelong friendships working for 11 years and becoming a supervisor at Madison County’s Department of Social Services (DSS), where her eldest son, Ricky, carries on her legacy

today as groundskeeper. Linda retired from Madison County DSS in 2015. Above all else, Linda cherished her role as “Mema” to her loving grandchildren. Her young ones were her greatest gift given and received. Nothing was more precious to her than her grandkids, and nothing brought her more joy than a sleepover with a big bowl of ice cream and “A Dog’s Journey” on DVD. When they couldn’t be together in person, they used FaceTime to keep close-by. “I

Community Memorial to host golf tournament The Community Memorial Foundation hosted the 6th annual Mike Martin Memorial Golf Tournament to benefit Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) on Monday, Aug. 1 The proceeds from the competition and supporting sponsors will go towards the capital project currently underway at Community Memorial Hospital, already working on renovating and expanding the facility as the organization celebrates its 70th anniversary. One hundred twenty-eight golfers attended the event, hosted at the beautiful and challenging Seven Oaks Golf Course of Colgate University in Hamilton. This event was named to remember a long-time and dedicated volunteer, Mike Martin, who was sadly lost to the community in October 2016. Deeply committed to the Hamilton area, Martin served on the board of the Community Memorial Foundation and chaired the tournament in its very successful inaugural year. The tournament recognizes his leadership skills, commitment to the hospital and the local community, and wonderful personality.

He served on several local committees spearheading economic initiatives and actively volunteered for Colgate University as trustee and President of the Alumni Council. Martin is a 1964 graduate of Rome Free Academy and Colgate University class of 1969. The sun was out all day with typical warm August golf weather, and after a brief welcome at noon, the players tee’d off. After the golfers completed their game, an awards dinner was hosted at the Hamilton Inn on Lake Moraine Road. Four teams were again recognized: 1st place went to Team Keith Tyburski; 2nd went to Team Ron Joyce; 3rd was awarded to Team Chris DeAngelis, and 13th went to Team Dan Poupore. “We had a fantastic time playing in the Community Memorial golf outing at Seven Oaks. It was a wonderful day with great golf and food in a perfect setting,” remarked Gary Weeks, event participant. “Our group was grateful to Susie Gustafson Real Estate for asking us to play in her sponsored foursome. My brother and two former colleagues loved playing the course and everything else that went

with the day. Congratulations to the Community Memorial staff on a first-rate event!” The event raised almost $100,000 in its 6th year and was supported by The Hayner Hoyt Corporation as Tournament Sponsor and SCP Health as Presenting. For a complete list of the event sponsors, along with event photos, please visit communitymemorial.org/foundation/golf-tournament/. The transformational project of CMH has already successfully completed the inpatient wing with private patient rooms, along with a new and expanded Emergency Room, the largest capital project since its inception in 1952. To learn more about the project details or to support, please visit communitymemorial. org/foundation/capital-campaign/. For over 70 years, Community Memorial Hospital’s mission has been to provide quality and caring healthcare to thousands of patients throughout nearly 30 Central New York communities in Madison County and beyond. needs of working professionals, parents raising children and even students in rural areas that may have limited access to educational opportunities,” said Carla DeShaw, director of Continuing Education, Cazenovia College. “It is also ideal for transfer students who are interested in completing their course work fully online.” Students can take up to three classes per semester with the ability to take courses during the summer and winter to still graduate in four years while going part-time. While earning their bachelor’s degree, students can also earn 350 hours for eligibility toward their certification for substance abuse counselor trainee (CASAC-T). “The need for practitioners is critical as the Bureau for Labor Statistics projects that
