North Area Meals on Wheels celebrates 50 years By Ashley M. Casey Associate Editor

n the summer of 1974, Linda Jackson received a call from Barbara Neevel, wife of Pitcher Hill Community Church Pastor Jim Neevel: would Jackson be available to cook for Meals on Wheels over the Fourth of July weekend? Jackson’s response was, “What’s Meals on Wheels?” By the end of that year, Jackson would be intimately familiar with the mission of North Area Meals on Wheels. She was hired as NAMOW’s cook that November and went on to serve as director and board member in the decades that followed. NAMOW celebrated its golden anniversary in a low-key gala Aug. 6 at Driver’s Village in Cicero. Jackson was one of about 125 guests — current and former volunteers, staff, board members and public officials — who gathered to mark the organization’s 50th year. “To me, those are the most special guests we have here today: the ones that got this started and kept it going,” said Ron Myers, NAMOW board president. What began in 1972 as a project of the North Area Pastors’ Association with just three or four clients

NAMOW has 12 paid staff and over 300 volunteers. In 2021, the NAMOW team prepared and delivered 122,732 meals across northern Onondaga County. “Every person that helped with something was a link in a very important chain,” Jackson said. In her welcome remarks at the Aug. 6 gala, NAMOW Executive Director Jennifer Covert offered profuse thanks to the organization’s army of volunteers, staff and supporters. She also shared stories of how NAMOW has touched the lives of clients such as Paul, who

required NAMOW’s services during a period of ill health. Once he had recovered, Paul came to the office to thank the NAMOW team. “He had just got this haircut — he looked so handsome,” Covert recalled. “He wasn’t in his wheelchair. He walked into our office with a huge smile and said, ‘You changed my life.’” While much of the gala focused on how far NAMOW has come, Covert emphasized that the Meals on Wheels mission is far from over. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain issues and rapidly rising fuel and food prices, seniors and disabled people in northern Onondaga County are in greater need than ever. JoAnne Spoto Decker, commissioner of the Onondaga County Department for Adult and Long Term Care Services, said her office has helped serve 350,000 meals across the county thanks to partnering agencies like NAMOW and other Meals on Wheels programs. “When I look [at NAMOW], I don’t see an organization. I see a

family,” she said. “It’s a privilege for us to work with NAMOW and Jennifer and her team.” Moe Harrington O’Neill, communications director for Assemblymember Al Stirpe’s office, commended the NAMOW crew for putting their “time, energy, heart and soul” into serving some of their most vulnerable neighbors. She presented Covert and NAMOW Board President Ron Myers with a proclamation from the New York State Assembly recognizing NAMOW’s 50th anniversary. As community members mingled over cake and crudités, the pioneers of NAMOW’s early days reminisced about their humble beginnings. “It’s been a pleasure connecting with some of the founders and seeing where they came from,” longtime volunteer Bob Graves said. “You can see the spirit in the room.” Jackson recounted the organization’s evolution from operating out of members’ home kitchens — “My pots and pans were at

their limit,” she said — to setting up shop in Calvary Methodist Church in Mattydale, moving to the Salina Civic Center and operating out of the former Riordan School in Mattydale. The 1980s and ‘90s were a period in which some community members balked at voting for budget increases for the North Syracuse Central School District, Jackson recalled. “The fact that Meals on Wheels was serving the elderly out of a school — I’d like to think it turned the tide,” she said of the organization’s tenancy at the Riordan School. Jackson looked around the room at the Aug. 6 gala, pointing out volunteers from NAMOW’s early days and remembering those who were no longer around to celebrate. “It was always the volunteers, people of faith, who believed it could be done,” she said. Kevin James starring in film Legislators sound off on aquarium vote now shooting at American High By Russ Tarby Contributing Writer

When the pandemic caused entertainment industry shutdowns in 2020, comedian Kevin James decided to quarantine with the eight Kinnane Brothers and produce weekly shorts for his YouTube channel. Now James – well-known for his CBS-TV sitcoms, “King of Queens” and “Kevin Can Wait.” – continues his collaboration with the creative Kinnanes by starring in their new horror movie being filmed this month in Liverpool. The Kinnane Brothers operate a full-service independent production company that has shown a talent for crossing mediums to create bingeable movies, shows and videos. The filmmaking collective keeps it all in house, acting as writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors and music supervisors. This month, James -- the 57-yearold comic from Long Island -- is starring in “The Visitator,” a supernatural thriller with a hint of humor being shot in Liverpool by the Kinnanes and American High. The plot suggests elements of “The Exorcist.” After a priest commits suicide in front of his entire parish, the Vatican sends the Rev. Joseph Pierce, an Apostolic Visitator, to investigate. Father Pierce ultimately uncovers a dark history that shakes the small town to its core. According to the Film and Television Industry Alliance, the screenplay was written by John and Patrick

Kinnane and the film is directed by Charles and Daniel Kinnane. Earlier this year James starred alongside Adam Sandler in “Home Team” also directed by Charles and Daniel Kinnane. Shortly after its January premiere, “Home Team” became the number-one movie on Netflix for two weeks in a row. James also recently appeared in the inventive TV series “Sound Guy” created by Patrick Kinnane. Kevin James (whose real name is Kevin George Knipfing) first proved his mettle on the silver screen 13 years ago by starring in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” before reprising that role in its 2015 sequel. Both of those comedies were box office blockbusters but critical flops. The comic is no stranger to Upstate NY. He studied and played varsity football at SUNY Cortland in the mid1980s. Cameras have been rolling since July 29 and continued shooting Aug. 1, 2 and 3 at 412 Cypress St. All subsequent scenes, set for Aug. 15 through 26, will be shot at the American High building at 800 Fourth St. That property, which American High CEO Jeremy Garelick purchased in 2017, is the former Liverpool High School building, constructed in 1929. According to “The Visitator” shooting schedule, producers are utilizing special effects, pyrotechnics, stunts, prop weapons and child actors. While filming on Aug. 25 at 800 Fourth St., an animal wrangler will oversee the performance of a goat.

Last week, the Onondaga County Legislature narrowly approved a proposal to build a 600,000-gallon aquarium on Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. The 9-8 vote was a victory for Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon, who has advocated for the $85 million project for about a year. The Aug. 2 vote largely fell along party lines, with eight Republicans and one Democrat voting in favor of the aquarium. However, three Republicans — Majority Leader Brian May, Ken Bush Jr. and Tim Burtis — broke with their GOP colleagues and voted against the proposal along with five Democrats. Charles Garland was the lone Democrat on the legislature to vote for the aquarium. Onondaga County Legislature Chair James Rowley (R-2nd District, Clay) said in a statement provided by the Legislature Republican Caucus that the aquarium is “going to be a huge benefit to the community.” May, who represents the 1st District (Lysander), told Eagle Newspapers that he too is “confident the aquarium will benefit the community” in terms of “increased tourism, growth along the Inner Harbor, increased sales tax revenue, education for students and improved quality of life options for families.” However, May had enough doubts about the proposal to cast a no vote. “These benefits were attractive enough for some colleagues to favor the project, but they weren’t quite enough to earn my vote,” he said. “After filtering all of the politically motivated noise and truly evaluating the aquarium proposal on its merits, I had concerns with the sustainability of the business model, future capital expenses and the con-

spicuous absence of support from the city of Syracuse.” The county is looking to break ground on the aquarium next year with a target completion date of 2024. Much of the funding for the project could come from the county’s $89 million share of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) money from the federal government. According to the Onondaga County Aquarium Feasibility Study, released in October 2021, the 80,000-square-foot aquarium could draw between 400,000 and 570,000 visitors each year. The study assumes an adult admission ticket price of $21.95 with discount options for seniors, students and military servicemembers. The aquarium could generate as much as $12 million in annual revenue. “The stable year earned revenue potential for the Onondaga County Aquarium is $10.4 million in current dollar value. Earned revenue would be supplemented by a variety of non-earned or contributed revenues such as gifts, grants, endowment proceeds and gifts-in-kind that are assumed at $1.6 million,” reads the study. The feasibility study also estimates the annual operating expenses would be $11.3 million. Legislator Debra Cody (R-5th District, Salina, Clay) sponsored the Aug. 2 resolution. “This was not an easy vote, but ultimately, the vote is about using surplus funds on an educational and tourism attraction that I believe will grow and enhance our community, so I am choosing to put my faith in this vision for Onondaga County,” Cody said in the GOP Caucus statement. While Cody is hoping the aquarium will attract visitors to the hotels and restaurants in Salina, the aquarium is not her only hope Aquarium l Page 2

LHS Drone Tech Program members earn remote pilot licenses Six members of the Liverpool High School Drone Tech Program recently received their official remote pilot licenses from the Federal Aviation Administration. Liverpool High School graduates Nicholas Allen, John Kempisty Jr., Cade Leombrone and Kyle Szymanoski, along with LHS technology teacher Matthew Starke, received licenses. Preparation for the FAA Remote Pilot Exam is part of the Drone Tech Program’s curriculum. Heading into its third full year, the LHS Drone Tech Program introduces students to an emerging technology that is now utilized in a range of career fields. The two-year Career and Technical Education (CTE) program is available to LHS juniors and seniors. It provides students with hands-on experiences as they explore existing and new applications for this technology. The program

covers topics such as photography and videography, engineering, computeraided design (CAD), business, agriculture and emergency services. Students taking drone tech courses fly drones every class day throughout the year, whether outside on the LHS campus, indoors in their WRE classroom or attached gym, on field trips, and in other spaces. Juniors taking the course will receive one science credit (General Physics) and seniors will receive one math credit (Math 12) toward graduation. Students completing both years of the program will receive a CTE endorsement on their diplomas. High school students interested in learning more about the LHS Drone Tech Program should email Starke at mstarke@ liverpool.k12.ny.us. That being stated, the bottom line for me and my vote was: who do I represent?” Bush told Eagle Newspapers. “With my no vote I believe I kept the faith with the people in the 13th who spoke out loud and clear to me about the wise use of tax dollars, the issue of vote swapping for a bag of political goodies, the influence of special interests, the ‘go along to get along’ mentality. It is sad

for many in the community that this project will always carry the stain and reminder of governing at its worst.” Bush’s swipe at “vote swapping” likely refers to Garland pledging his support after McMahon promised a $4.5 million housing investment on the Southside of Syracuse, located in Garland’s 16th District. Despite his no vote on the aquarium, May said he hopes the project is successful. “Though I thought we could have done better yesterday, I am truly hopeful for the project’s success — for taxpayers and the well-being of our community,” May said. “I think everyone needs to respect the process and respect the legislators’ decisions. Let’s come together as a community and enjoy this new attraction that we’re going to have in a couple of years,” Rowley said.

Half way point

So many things in life are a mater of perspective and summer is no exception. It seems like it was only a blink of an eye ago that we were celebrating Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. Isn’t it kind of strange the way February, the shortest month, seems to last forever, while July goes by so fast that you have to wonder how all of a sudden it is August? This is the half way point of summer, before we know it, it will be Labor Day. But here is where perspective comes into play. None of us want to rush unnecessarily through summer and into fall if we can help it. It is all a matter of looking at the glass as half empty or half full, negatively or optimistically. While it can be easy to think of this in some negative light, summer being half way over already and it seems like it has barely started, there is a lot of optimism when we look at it with the right eyes. Summer is only half way over; there is still plenty of time to enjoy it. After several challenging years due to the pandemic, in the summer of 2022 things are closer to normal. With the return of many local and regional events and activities, this summer has provided a lot more opportunities to get out and enjoy these summer days. Even when the weather has not been ideal, with soaring temperatures, and heat and early on some intensely rainy days as spring transitioned into summer, we hope the first half of summer has been enjoyable and you did find a chance to see a musical performance or go to a community event or any number of other activities. The important thing is to make the time to enjoy it. There are the unavoidable realities of life, our duties and responsibilities from work, to chores around the house and innumerable others. But it is also important to remember that we all need to stop and take some time for the responsibilities we have to ourselves, our families and the other things we probably don’t give enough time and attention when we are caught in the day to day obligations of our lives. But it seems summer is a time when many make a point to pay at least a little more attention to these important details. There is that cliché of the long lazy days of summer, maybe it is the memory of summer vacations when we were younger, maybe it is the number of activities that correlate with the season, but whatever the reason, it seems this is a time when everyone wants to shake off some of their daily cares and spend a little time enjoying something special. Take some time, use these weeks of summer that are still ahead and find what will make you happy. We are fortunate to be surrounded by the bounty of nature in Central New York. With numerous lakes, trails, nature sites and camping, there are innumerable opportunities to get outside. For some it is as simple as a backyard fire and toasting marshmallows and making s’mores with the kids. For others it may be taking in a ball game and having a hotdog. For others it will be a concert or the bigger events still to come like the New York State Fair. But whatever it is, take the time to enjoy the long days of summer as much as you can and find the time to kick back and relax even for a little while.

Move it or lose it

If you listen carefully, you can hear the admonition to get up and move everywhere. No more couch lizards … the pandemic is sort of over and you can now move past the softness of your sofa and the cold of your fridge to the wide world of movement. Isn’t it well known that exercise will enhance for the better, all parts of your life span including pandemic paunch? Knowing what little I know, the ever present and overarching “they” are right. You just have to move to feel at your best. Walking, belonging to and attending a gym, playing sports, dancing, gardening, etc. all make the parts that make up the physical and mental you work better. Believe it or not, movement makes you more energetic, aware and focused, a dra-

Ramblings from the empty nest

Ann Ferro matic change from lethargic, oblivious and “what?” What exercise will meet your requirements varies with your situation. Standing in front of the refrigerator, contemplating your next snack is not exercise and refusing to go to the gym because your spandex broke is not an excuse. What you do to get moving is a dynamic that is truly yours. You just have to figure it out. Figuring it out can have its challenges. Take, for instance, who the instructors are for movement of any kind. Most are around 22, weigh 110 pounds and are more ripped than a washboard. They are attired in painted-on spandex that

would, maybe, fit your right wrist. If that isn’t intimidating enough, they have a language that has terminology that reminds you of that day in physics class when the English language failed you. They describe movements that fall into one of many categories from “odd” to “that’s hysterical,” “bizarre” and “are you kidding?” which is very similar to “that ship has sailed.” One of the terms that is confusing is “core.” Now I’ve known all of the body parts for some time. I aced anatomy and physiology, reassembled whole skeletons and never became acquainted with a part called core. If it is like the core of apples then it is something that extends through the middle of your body from head to toe. Or… is it more specific (I looked this up) extend-

ing from the last rib to the part of your body where the effluents “exit?” Basically, it is your abdomen, which is not to be confused with your stomach, although your stomach and parts higher up are often the reason why you have to work on your core and other places. So what does a good core do for you? According to lots of articles, the muscles in this area are responsible for balance (along with your ears,) body stability when moving, good posture, help with back pain, increased ability to do ordinary chores, protection of internal organs and making getting older not so awful. This seems like a movement bargain, so I looked up what goes for core exercises and found out that like all exercise, it depends on your Move l Page 5

We hear the Baldwinsville Marching Band practice in the evenings, and we don’t take offense at the school kids cutting across the parking lot on their way to an after-school snack. We are a community, and all demographics make our village vibrant and sustainable. Whether Baldwinsville remains my “lifelong home” depends on the availability of income-based housing when it’s my turn to retire. Kay Davidson KCares Home Companion

To the editor: I am writing to express my support for the proposed income-based housing on Phillips Street. I’ve been a Baldwinsville resident for 33 years -- 21 in a single-family home and the rest as an apartment dweller. When I was a divorced mother with children, it was very hard to find affordable housing to keep my children in Baldwinsville schools. Not everyone can afford to buy a house, or to rent in the $1200$1400/month range of newer rental properties in Baldwinsville. I take issue with Deputy Mayor Stebbins’ characterization of apartment-dwellers as “transient” and rentals as “not usually where you set up to make your lifelong home. That tends to be not somebody that contributes to our community.” (Messenger, July 27) I started a Baldwinsvillebased business from my rental, and my clientele is 90% Baldwinsville residents. Of my immediate 4 neighbors, one musician plays weekly at Syracuse restaurants; one visits grandchildren in Oswego; one goes out to eat with sister and brother-in-law daily at local restaurants; one retired from a career at a Baldwinsville bank. In the next building, one plays in the community band, and a new couple has children who

They have generously hosted the library’s sale since 2014, providing a safer, more pleasant and very organized book sale for the community. It’s been a wonderful home! We look forward to

seeing everyone in 2023!

Julie Abbott is the right candidate

To the editor: Having served in the New York State Senate for nearly three decades, I have seen the mechanisms of state government and worked with numerous local representatives to accomplish things for our shared constituencies. I know a good candidate, and a good future representative, when I see one. Julie Abbott is exactly what we need in the New York State Senate.

Julie has fought for lower taxes, safer streets, and parent-first education. She has supported our police when it was unpopular on a national political scale and remains an ardent supporter of the rule of law. The safety of her neighbors and the families who live in our communities is her first priority in every decision she makes. She has a history of winning elections – not because of popularity or name ID – but because she shows up and does the work for the residents of her district. She takes stands for what is right and will go to bat for those she serves, even when it may not be popular. Not only is she the best choice, Julie is the only choice. She has the support of community leaders and the community itself. We must answer one simple question in the weeks and months ahead: Why on earth is Rachel May, an advocate for progressive far left policies, she still sitting in the New York State Senate? She simply does not share the values of residents in the 48th Senate District. This year, please join me in supporting Julie Abbott for New York State Senate. She will be a great Senator, and she is the right choice to bring common sense back to Albany. John DeFrancisco Former NYS Senator

Bill Russell, pioneer, winner

W

hen discussing Bill Russell, the sports giant who passed away last week at age 88, the winning always is brought up. Those 11 NBA titles with the Boston Celtics. Those two NCAA championships and an Olympic gold medal while at the University of San Francisco. No player in American sports can match those totals. Except that, for many different reasons, Russell left a legacy that far exceeded trophies or rings. Not content with changing the very way basketball is played at the highest level, Russell took on a heavier burden and sought to change society. Some appreciated it. Others didn’t. For a strong, proud Black man born in very segregated Louisiana before his family moved west to Oakland, the path to respect was direct. Dominate, bow down to no one, stand tall and, most of all, defend. On the court, that meant establishing a presence so imposing that to challenge it was foolhardy. At USF, he was so good that college basketball literally widened the lane and introduced goaltending so one couldn’t grab a rebound on the rim. It didn’t matter. Russell still won. Once with the Celtics, Russell turned a good team into a dynasty, all by giving up points and proving content to grab the board and block the shots – not for statistics, but to set up his teammates for success. All those showdowns with Wilt Chamberlain further proved the point. Wilt had no equal in terms of getting buckets, but even he admitted later that he never would have fit in with those Celtics teams because Russell had a different – and better – mentality. And Russell did this while

discouraging. A strong core makes their movement easy, without effort, almost balletic. Compare that with the wobbly, clumsy, shambling and often shuffling gait that I present, and fixing my core seems to be a good idea. The movements

that bulk up my deltoids, biceps and leg muscles, etc. are really far too little unless my core is strong. Of course I am assuming that I will work on these things while seated too. So, it’s the chair and 10 minutes a day for me.

I am wondering how long it will take for the metamorphosis to take place? I look forward to the time when I drop something on the kitchen floor and do not have to call for help or kick it under the dishwasher. How long for the spandex-free butterfly

Third Ward City Councilor Chol Majok, a native of South Sudan who immigrated here in 2001, also sets his sights on Washington. Majok worked in the state Senate for Sen. in the face of all the prejudice America could throw at a Black man who didn’t conform. He marched for civil rights long before most other athletes or celebrities joined in, then coaxed Jim Brown, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and others to support Muhammad Ali in his battle against the Vietnam-era draft. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the abuse he took in Boston. Despite all the glory and all the championships, they still harassed him, once even vandalizing his home, damaging his trophies and spraying the N-word just for good measure. They never did that to Bob Cousy or Larry Bird. It’s funny how some in Boston bristled at Russell not staying there after his playing days, labeling him as “difficult” and “arrogant”, as if he didn’t have reason to feel hurt and disrespected. Sure, he was great at basketball, but Russell was not about to play any other games society wanted. Retirement ceremony? He did it in private at Boston Garden. Autographs? Forget it, he would rather have a conversation than turn into a commodity. Within the basketball community, there was a sense of awe and reverence for Russell not reserved for anyone else. Other legends, past and present, were glad to brandish their name and soak up the adoration of fans and media alike. Russell preferred, always, to keep to himself. Safe to say, there’s no way a Bill Russell could happen if he arrived in 2022. Everyone would ask him to smile more, put in more baskets, tell him to drift outside and learn to Russell l Page 10

Russell

CNY’s Community News Source

From page 5 shoot from deep, and try to minimize all of the social conscience that once was an asset, but is now a source of mockery. And that doesn’t even cover the way a multimedia universe would frame, re-frame, dissect and dismantle every play or every pronouncement, making us sick of the topic and, by turn, killing our appreciation for the player, and the man. However, they don’t pin a Presidential Medal of Freedom on someone solely for championships. Memorials are not composed by people in walks of life far beyond basketball for people who just rebounded and blocked shots. You want a proper tribute to Bill Russell? Don’t write it or put it in stone. Rather, if you are an athlete, do everything you can to make sure your teammates have a chance to win and, when that is done, use your platform to address the wrongs all around you, whether people listen or not. Maybe Russell didn’t convince everyone in his lifetime. But when he left for his heavenly reward, everyone instantly understood the irreplaceable void he leaves us. l

CNY SPCA pet of the week

Ziggy wants to join your band Submitted by Donna Newman Photo by CNY SPCA What’s the difference between a deaf dog and a hearing dog? Not as much as you’d think. In fact, during the course of their lifetime, many dogs lose their hearing. Ziggy has big, perky ears but ironically is deaf. Ziggy doesn’t let this hold him back; he’s incredibly energetic and lively, and is looking for an active home that will give him the mental and physical stimulation that every dog deserves. He’s a 5-year-old mixed breed with a quirky smile and halfside underbite. Ziggy’s very smart and absolutely loves to snuggle. He’s a volunteer favorite and has successfully completed a basic training class. Ziggy can be around dogs, but he would do best in an adult home without cats or dogs. He’s eager to learn and will thrive with a patient and understanding adopter who’ll continue his training. He also enjoys car rides and is patient in the bath. Ziggy was brought to us as a stray and quickly became a shelter favorite with his heart-warming personality. He was adopted but was a victim of the pandemic and was returned. Ziggy originally came to the shelter in September of 2019, he was adopted in June of 2020, and returned in October of 2021. At this time, Ziggy has spent more of his adult life in a shelter than in a home. As you can imagine, shelter life is taking its toll on Ziggy, and he’s ready to start the next chapter of his life with a special family. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

History Mystery North

Do you know anything about this picture? By Dorothy Heller Clay Historian

This week’s question: Who was this many-talented man loved by the town for his generosity and kindness? Last week’s answer: Pictured is a preliminary plan around 1949 for Tri-Town Park, the first public park erected in the town of Clay, in the North Syracuse area of the town. After my future husband and I had graduated from Broome College in Binghamton, he obtained a job at General Electric in Syracuse. We were married and immediately moved north buying a nice little Cape Cod in North Syracuse. The neighbors were friendly with young children, so when we also became parents of a boy and a girl, we fit right in. They told us about a great local park. This was in the 1970s and I didn’t even know its name. As historian, I decided to do some research. In 1949, the population growth moved north out of the city of Syracuse. These new small homes had yards and fences and

neighbors, but no place for the children to play. In the winter of 1958-1959, concerned citizens formed a group called “The Tri-Town Recreation Association.” The members were citizens and representatives of the town governments of Clay, Cicero and Salina. After surveying their entire areas, the only place they could find was the 23acre “hole in the ground” at Buckley and Fay (name later changed) roads. Called “the pit” by residents, it was formed when the gravel was used for fill when constructing Hancock Field during World War II. Being the only area available, the Tri-Town group nodded yes to this unsightly place when the town of Clay offered it to them. The Development Committee formed under Richard Weaver included: Mrs. June Guarante of Clay, Richard D. Ryan and Mrs. Ann Leadley of Salina, and William M. Mentgen and William Nechtal of Cicero. They consulted with professional architects, reviewed plans and hired

consulting engineer Seymour Ribyat to draw up full development plans. More than 40,000 yards of earth was moved as preliminary grading that permitted limited winter-time use that first year. In early 1960, the group held its first and only public appeal for funds for the three-year development plan. Included was an advance gifts campaign titled “What is your share?” The appeal emphasized that Tri-Town Park was a three-community project to benefit children and adults. Everyone was asked to make a pledge to be paid in installments over a three-year period for betterment and future of their home towns. It was very successful. Full development was underway!

Help in the form of equipment, time, muscle and talent poured in. Contractors, construction firms, builders, equipment concerns, oil companies, the military and several area industrial firms contributed to the cause. Earth moving equipment was on the job for the preliminary grading including men at no cost with free oil from the oil companies to keep them rolling. The full value of utility poles, outdoor floodlights, wire and miscellaneous controls and labor (700 work hours) was cut down to $1,000. The committee figured that they could proceed with their plans to develop a $150,000 park for $50,000. The three-year plan unfolded as follows: • First year: Baseball

field, tots’ area, softball diamond, apparatus area, skiing, sledding, ice skating and hockey rink, lawn games area, fishing pond, rest rooms, picnic area (start), drinking fountains, preliminary grading and landscaping. • Second year: Basketball court, touch football field, tennis court, children’s quiet area, picnic grounds (completed), older people activities area, roads, parking areas (start), bike parking facilities, landscaping and gardening. •Third year: Finish landscaping and gardening, complete roads and parking areas, fencing for entire park perimeter, entrances, addition of three more tennis courts, another ball field and utility

room for youth building. The total cost of this three-year plan was a little over $50,000. Residents who were around at that time know what a success it was in 1962. It is now called Clay Park South and continues to be improved.

During the June friendship meeting, guild members cut fabric for kits to be made into Honor Flight quilts. The August meeting will be to cut the batting and backing fabric for the kits. Completed Honor Flight

quilts will be given to the veterans returning from their Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., in honor of their service to our country. Visit plankroadquiltguild.org.

DIY Stenciled Tote Bags

Do you remember the worst round of golf you have ever played? Do you remember the best round? The answer is, of course, an emphatic YES! Our brain seems to never allow us to forget either our worst or best of anything we do and golf is no exception. Take Tiger Woods for instance. He shot scores of: * 85 in the 3rd round of the 2015 Memorial Tournament * 82 in the 2nd round of the 2015 Phoenix Open * 81 in the 3rd round of the 2002 British Open * 80 in the 1st round of the 2015 US Open He also shot scores of: * 61 in the 1999 Byron Nelson Tournament (1st round) * 61 in the 2000 WGC-NEC INTERNATIONAL (2nd round) * 61 in the 2005 Buick Open (2nd round) How is it possible for Tiger to be as many as 24 strokes worse from “his best to worst”? It has simply been described as, “that’s golf ” by literally thousands of instructors, coaches, psychologists, friends and strangers for at least the last five hundred years. We don’t like it much, but that’s the way it is. I got a call last week from Jim Lerch, long time CNY radio sports talk host of “The Manchild Show”, formally, “Bud and the Manchild”. He asked me to sub for his partner Kurt in the golf league he plays in at the Links at Erie Village. I said yes because I have known Jim for over 20 years, played a lot of golf with him, and thought it would be nice to get together for old times. Besides, I consider him a good friend and he was the one who hired me at Clear Channel (currently I Heart Radio) over twenty years ago. He said my handicap would be determined by the score I shoot that night. He also told me he shot the worst 9 hole round of golf (53) in his league the previous week. I knew what was coming. That same weekend, he played with three friends and asked me, “What do you think I shot”? I said, “70 what”? He said, “76”. I congratulated him and said I was looking forward to playing with him. Three weeks ago, I shot an 88 at Lakeshore Yacht & Country Club (my home course) in the qualifying round of the CNYSG Match Play Championship. It was the first time in over 4.5 years I shot “over my age”. I made a 7 on the par 3, 4th hole, by taking 6 putts to finally hole

Perry Noun is the former executive director of the Northeastern NY PGA as well as a competitive amateur golfer and winner of the New York State Super Senior Amateur Championship. Perry Noun can be heard on “Tee Time With The Pronoun” on... News Radio 570 WSYR and 106.9FM.

out. I also had three double bogies, the last of which was on the 18th hole. I “skulled” my 50 yard approach shot over the green and watched my ball bounce down the parking lot between the cars, to the grass area in front of Oneida Lake…about 100 yards beyond the green. I received a text message at 9:51PM that evening from Greg Cohen, who runs the league on Thursday nights at The Links at Erie Village. His message is sent to all members of the league each week after the 9 hole round. The following is part of his message… “Jim Lerch sent me a text message on Monday morning to say he has a sub for his partner Kurt this week named Perry Noun. I know Perry from the radio and from following him in a couple of tournaments over the years. I tell Jim that he’s a true zero handicap. Jim responds that he WAS, but now that he is 85, I’m not sure of his handicap. Well, Mr. Perry Noun who has been a fixture in the CNY golf scene for almost 25 years had a good night. With 5 birdies and a gross score of 33, he has a league handicap of +2.25…the lowest handicap of any league member at Erie Village in the 15 years I’ve been running the league. Congratulations Mr. Noun. It was a pleasure meeting you in person and shaking your hand . You had a round for the ages and I only wish I could have played with you this evening to witness it. Thank you for all your contributions to this game. I wish you many more years of good health. If any of you want to hear what Perry has to say about the game, he hosts a radio show appropriately named, ‘Tee Time With The Pronoun’ on Saturday mornings at 7AM on 570AM”. Thank you Jim for asking me to be a sub in your golf league. Thank you Gregg for the kind words in your weekly message above. GOOD THINGS HAPPEN IN GOLF… WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT IT !
