Vendors, crowds increasing at Johnson Park arts & craft shows

Local businesswoman Jessica Mosley is hosting a series of bazaars at Johnson Park this year, and over the summer she has seen the events grow by leaps and bounds. The series started with a spring bazaar on May 28, followed by a Fathers’ Day bazaar on JuneSeveral18. dozen vendors and several scores of shoppers populated the park those days, but by the time Mosley staged her summertime bazaar on July 23, the event had expanded to more than 80 vendors and several hundred customers.Theatmosphere was electric as the bus tling crowds browsed at booths set up from the stage near Vine Street all the way back to the park’s west end at Tulip Street. Another big turnout was expected at the summer fun bazaar on Aug. 27. “We’ve seen a significant increase in the number of vendors and guests. They keep get ting larger every month,” Mosley said. “We always have 80 to 100 vendors for each event, and they’re selling a wide variety of products -- jewelry, bath and beauty items, crocheted animals, clothes, artwork, furniture and pho tography.”Forrefreshments, bazaar-goers can sip Ha waiian shaved ice and munch on snacks sold at the well-stocked concessions bar. Live music by guitarist Josiah Waterman adds to the ambiance, as he performs while his artistic sister paints a canvas alongside him onstage.Mosley owns and operates Mosley Mercan tile on Vine Street selling health and beauty products and services. She and her husband, Jeremy Mosley, also operate the Cozmic Caul dron at 217 S. Salina St., in the courtyard

Kabob House? Before the planners adjourned, Bradt asked Code Enforcement Officer Bill Reagan about the sta tus of the Kabob House, 409 Tulip St. Reagan said the restaurant has yet to complete several improve ments necessary to earn permis sion to open for business. Deputy Village Clerk San dra Callahan reported that some passers-by had enquired of work ers at the site about the plans to open, and the laborers indicated that it would be another month before the Kabob House’s first meals will be served.

Roerden had applied for a site plan review to remove the building’s front steps, enclose its porch and reconstruct the en tranceRoerdenramp.told the planners that he is taking advantage of the re cent Main Street grants offered by Onondaga County to make storefront improvements. The elimination of the front steps will complement those renovations, according to Roerden and Tucker. After a brief public hearing, the board – Chairman Joe Ostuni Jr., and members Bob Bradt, Ed Higgins, Sam Reppi and Jim Taft – voted unanimously to approve Roerden’s plan. The planners also conducted a public hearing on the applica tion of 705 Vine St. homeowner Scott Greenleaf for a special permit and site plan review for a home occupation for a statelicensed massage therapist there. The masseuse is his fiancée, Rose Cerklewich, who said she has at least 20 years of experience in the field.During the hearing the board repeatedly asked about the avail ability of parking at 705 Vine, and Greenleaf said the property has between eight to 10 parking spaces behind the house. “He built that for me,” she said with great pride. It was a lovely house. The narration continued as we passed the fields where the fall vegetables were growing and learned which member of the fam ily was responsible for them. It was to the Barn at the Farm Café we headed next. Jane had told us about its origins as a hundredyear-old barn. We were interested after a hot and more than humid afternoon of berry picking. Inside we saw the result of expert craft manship in the addition, faithful to age of the hundred-year-old barn to which is was attached. . The cocktails were great too. Jane’s daughter, Brenda, joined us and expanded on the birth of this café. “A relative wanted to get married here and so we did built this venue. There is even a bridal suite upstairs.” As we were leaving, I thanked Jane for her hospitality and asked her how she maintained her health and“Whatenergy.do you eat?” I asked. “Dry Cheerios, water and coffee … that’s it.” Her daughter and the bartender verified her claim. As we headed home, I said to no one in particular, “I think Jane’s diet a Aftertry.”my spouse stopped laugh ing, I continued… “after I make and eat a black raspberry pie.”

I complemented her on the way the berries had been cared for, obviously wired up, watered and weeded out, morphing into a remi niscence of the wild black caps that my grandmother and I picked … a thousand years ago. Jane responded with her own memories of the same where she grew up on a farm in Marcellus. “I’m a Leach,” she said. “Mar ried a man from South Onon daga.”“Inever finished high school; we got married young. People did that in those days. My life has been my family and this,” she said, as she waved her hand indicating the wide expanse of berries and appleOurtrees.volunteer chauffer and expert berry picker stayed with us as we filled our containers as we chatted about life and family. She then asked, “How old are you?Iresponded, “82.” “Me too,” she said. “When’s your birthday?” I told her June 7, and she re plied, “Well, I’ll be! Mine is June 4.”She sidled next to me and told me how lucky I was to have my husband with me in a voice meant for my spouse to hear. “My husband died too young. He was so good at everything he did - he created this business; he was the best carpenter.” She stepped back and waved her hand at the farm … “all this and my house and the barn. When you are finished I’ll take you on a tour of theOffplace.”again on the ancient Gator, our guide took us past the various field where the different variet ies of apples were grown, adding a lively narration about their uses and when they would be ripe. As we rounded one of the apple or chards, there, in the middle of the ripening apples, was Jane’s house.

The month of August was dedicated to National Wellness Month, but no matter what month or day it may be there is never a bad time to take your overall health and wellness into consideration. Both mentally and physically our well ness is vital and these are things that like any other aspect of our lives need and deserve time to be focused on. And increasingly in recent years we are coming to have a better understanding of the connection between these two aspects of ourselves and how they collectively play a role in how we feel. In a world that moves ever faster and is connected 24/7 and where the line between work and personal life is blurry, we are real izing that the constant toll on our mental wellness can impact our physical wellness and manifest in physical ways with feelings of be ing tired or rundown or mentally drained. The heat was oppressive, but we were determined to finally pick some black raspberries. I was my jam making time of the year and I wouldn’t be deterred. Outfitted with buckets, baskets and fans that hung around the neck, we headed to Navarino Orchards. One sticking point had me bit worried. The berries are a tad bit on the far away side from the parking lot and, since my walking ability is what you might categorize as minimal, getting from said parking lot to the picking area was a problem. But, ever resourceful, I had a plan. Cane at the ready, I started the trek out to the berry patch ahead of the spouse, thinking that at his normal pace, he would catch up to me when I was about half way there. While it was a scorcher of a day, with humid ity near 90 percent, the lack of rain had left the ground dry. As I teetered and wobbled along, my footfalls and cane sent clouds of dust into the air. I heard it before I saw it. An interesting, rather beat-up vehicle looking like a cross between a truck and a jeep pulled up beside me. In the driver’s seat, an athlet ically-slim gal of what we might call a “certain age” offered me and my fast-approaching spouse a ride. I enthusiastically accepted. We scrambled into the seat and our driver, whose name was Jane, took us the rest of the way to the area of the patch “where few go to pick.” According to Jane, “Most start in the front and never reach this back area. It’s full of berries.” Jane stayed with us as we began to pick, adding berries to the baskets of each of us while offering a few pointers on how to gather our harvest“Pullquickly.backthe leaves,” she said. “Everyone forgets to do that - look underneath.”

When Rory was asked what role Tiger is playing, he said, “He is the hero that we’ve all looked up to. His voice carries further than anyone else’s in the game of golf. His role is navigating us to a place where we all think we should be”. Let’s face it…the PGA Tour had it made for over 20 years promoting the game of golf. ey had a new young PGA Tour player named Tiger that got over 5 million new golfers to start playing golf and millions more to watch golf on television. ey started making more money than at any other time in their history. In the 10 years before Tiger started playing on the PGA Tour, the leading money winner earned a total of $653,296. Can you name the player? It was Greg Norman, believe it or not. How ironic! Let’s go 10 years ahead to 1996, the year Tiger arrived on Tour, Tom Lehman was the leading money winner, over the ten year period, with a total of $1.78 million.

Farmers and the fair To the editor: It’s that time of year again, time to get excited for the NYS Fair! We are especially excited to see the Milk Bar return with strawberry milk. Prepare yourselves for the spectacle of the icon ic butter sculpture, the dairy barn, and the cow birthing center. Don’t forget about the crop growing contest results located in the Horticultural Building. What is often forgotten during our 13-day celebration of agriculture is that production agriculture is a tough, complex, costly job. Dairy farmers are required to maintain compliance with extensive state and federal regulation. Often the romantic image we painted of production agriculture during the Fair neglects the details of farming. Many are unaware that farms are required to maintain sufficient land to responsibly apply manure, or that farms follow a detailed plan to apply nutrients pre scribed by a certified CAFO planner. Recycled nutrients in manure fertil ized crops help maintain soil health. A dairy farmer in 2022 must comply with many additional regulations dictating the timing of manure applications than at any other time in our state’s history. As a result, farms store these recycled nutrients close to the agricultural lands facilitating the incorporation of nutri ents in the spring, summer, and fall, as dictated by the crop, soil nutrients, and climactic conditions. So, let’s take these next two weeks to celebrate the Great NYS Fair, and in so doing, applaud our farmers, regulatory folks, and all those behind the scenes bringing strawberry milk to the Milk Bar, and butter turned into a sculpture. In Tiger’s rst 10 years on Tour, he was the total leading money winner with earnings of $10.6 million. Tiger has earned just over $120 million playing golf on the PGA Tour and is personally responsible for creating opportunities for all PGA Tour players to become millionaires. I submitted the article below about 4 hours before Jay Monaghan, President of the PGA Tour, announced his newest “Revenue Sharing Plan” for Tour players on television to the media and golf fans all over the world. I believe strongly his announcement is a direct result of the meeting I write about in my article below Last week Tiger Woods ew up to Wilmington, Delaware from his home in Jupiter, Florida to attend a meeting with an undisclosed number of PGA Tour players who were competing in the BMW Championship. Rickie Fowler joined Tiger on the ight and also attended the meeting including Rory McIIroy, Justin omas, Will Zalatoris, Xander Schau ele, Patrick Cantlay, who won the BMW Championship for the 2nd year in a row, and several other players. Although no one who attended the meeting was willing to disclose any speci c details of what was discussed, the players certainly acknowledged there was unity going forward to come up with speci c ideas that would improve the PGA Tour.Although Tiger did not compete in the BMW Championship, he was there for one reason and one reason only…to PRESIDE over the meeting to show his continued support of the PGA TOUR in their new battle for supremacy over the new start up challenger…the LIV Tour. You might remember that Tiger made his position perfectly clear at this years British Open when he said the PGA Tour players who le , “turned their backs” on the entity that allowed them to succeed and felt the new LIV Tour, led by Greg Norman was wrong. ose were strong words by Tiger that weekend and they remain powerful and impactful today and I believe this is the reason Tiger is now the new LEADER of the PGA Tour players. Rory McIIroy put his feelings this way, “It’s impactful, and I think it shows how much he cares about the Tour and how much he cares about the players that are coming through and are going to be the next generation. The main inspirations for the event have been her brother-inlaw, Mike, and Josh’s cousin Dave Mirra.Danielle said Mike provided encouragement for everyone in the family and their various pas sion projects, from her own writ ing to his two sisters’ respective studies and pursuits in special effects horror makeup. He also bought the necessary equipment to get Josh started on homebrew ing.“He was the most supportive person ever,” Danielle said of Mike, who the family lost to sui cide in August 2020. “Anytime we’d accomplish something, he would be the first person to say ‘great job’ and be so proud of you and push you to do more.” Mike is also remembered for his routine of going to the gym multiple times a day and his competitiveness in Jujutsu. The name of the Benjamins’ volleyball tournament has been “Stay Strong” from the start, ref erencing a favorite maxim used by Mirra that several of his cousins had tattooed in his handwriting to pay tribute. A decorated BMX rider originally from Chittenango, Mirra took his own life in North Carolina in the winter of 2016. Danielle said she has since come to realize the importance of having open dialogue about mental health. “It’s OK to go seek help, and it’s OK to say you’re having a bad day,” she said. “Even if people aren’t struggling themselves, the fact that other people are having these conversations makes it so that they Possessingunderstand.”abackground in international education, Dan ielle recalls teaching students hailing from cultures and coun tries where mental health issues are seen as “taboo” topics of dis cussion. She went on to be some one they could confide in on that basis.Though she acknowledges that it may be easier to open up about these difficulties in the United States, she said there are many who choose to bottle their thoughts and feelings. Still, the signs can potentially be discov ered in someone’s canceled plans and unanswered phone calls— reasons to at least check in and see if they either need space or a friend to lean on.

“They have a great ethic, and want to get to better,” said Kline.

Ibrahim, a fourth-year varsity player, said what’ has helped the Northstars stay on top is the combination of strong coach ing by Dave Kline and his staff, along with the understanding that every year brings a new challenge and a new chemistry among teammates, and not shying away from that challenge.Forhis part, Kline said that the key for this team to maintain this championship streak is to bring the same energy and ef fort they show in practice to the field.

C-NS football aims to continue championship run

By PHil BlACKWEll For the last five seasons, no one in area Class AA football has stopped CiceroNorth Syracuse, at least when it counts. Four consecutive Section III and re gional titles, along with an undefeated spring 2021 season during the recovery from COVID-19, has left the Northstars squarely on top, waiting to see if anyone can dethrone them. Those who have tried, including Bald winsville, Utica Proctor and especially Liverpool, have proven unable to unseat C-NS. Now Christian Brothers Academy arrives back in Class AA, fresh off an un likely 2021 run to the state Class A crown. CBA meets the Northstars Sept. 16 at Alibrandi Stadium, following two opening tests that includes this Friday’s opener at Horseheads, from Section IV. As it works toward a new season, C-NS does so with plenty of questions on both sides of the ball -understandable with stars like Jerrod Hills, Mason Ellis, Vinnie Lat tanzio, James Cahill and Tavores Flourn oryHowever, gone. there isn’t a question of who starts under center. Junior Jaxon Razmovski split starting duties with Anthony Testa last fall. With Testa gone, Razmovski now starts fulltime, head coach Dave Kline saying that he has worked hard building up arm and body strength in the off-season. A group of receivers, including Mason Mingle, Andrew Vinette and Nathan Wil liams, look to put up production matching what Ellis (79 career catches, 1,048 career yards)Testacontributed.endedup leading C-NS in rush ing in 2021 after an injury sidelined senior Jamar Ballard. Senior Farouk Ibrahim and La’Quan Lemon, back after a season at Liverpool, leads this year’s group which also includes Shane Williams. By far, C-NS’s biggest challenge on of fense lies up front. Just one senior, guard Mike Bozinovski, is part of the rotation, while Joe Main moves from center to the other guard spot, with competition for both tackle spots and center. No single player on the roster is more difficult to replace than Hills. In 2021, he compiled 15 sacks and 99 tackles, domi nating on defense and, according to Kline, covering up for plenty of mistakes made by linemen on both sides of the ball. It’s up to the likes of defensive linemen Ty Daughton and Roemellow Robinson to approximate the impact Hills made. Things are more settled at linebacker, where Lemon, Evan Gallgaher and Cody Heller are set to start, all of them looking to replace Cahill’s 6 ½ sacks and 89 tack les. Thanks to Ibrahim and senior Carlton Garnes (also a track standout who has longjumped 22 feet 4 ½ inches), there’s plenty of experience and quality in the C-NS sec ondary, with depth added by Mingle and David Shafer-Mooney.

By PHil BlACKWEll Sunshine and reasonable summer tem peratures greeted area high school boys golf teams as two of them began their 2022 seasons last Thursday with impressive winning efforts. Cicero-North Syracuse Blue went 10-2 a season ago, just behind Baldwins ville (10-1-1) in the SCAC Metro division standings and third at the Section III fall tournament.Determined to go to the top this fall, the Northsars started with a 202-228 vic tory over Fayetteville-Manlius White at Woodcrest Golf Club, led by Sean Lawler’s under-par 34 for nine holes. Kaeden Hackler had a 40, while David Schmidt earned a 41. Drew Kippen shot 43 and Jack Wolanski had a 44 as Gavin Goettel’s 45 matched that of F-M White’s Parker Kaczorowski and Cullen Vreden burgh.Asthis went on, Liverpool, determined to improve on last fall’s 3-9-1 mark, took a great leap in that direction with a 191227 victory over the younger C-NS Green squad at Greens at Beaumont. Owen Michaud’s 35 led a top-four War riors sweep. Brady Michaud and Owen Salanger both had rounds of 38 as Dom Osbeck finished with a 39 and Joe Sacco shotTo41.counter it, C-NS Green’s Riley Pet zoldt led his side with a 40. Ethan Mat thews had a 44, ahead of a 47 from Kyle Kulikowsky and 48s from Colin Nicols and Tanner Kempney.
