Caz girls win tough title battle by Kurt WHeeler

The Cazenovia cross country girls saved its best team effort of the season for the moment that mattered most: the Section III Class C championship race. A clutch performance last Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School earned the Lakers a thrilling victory over two talented opponents as it scored 48 points to beat out defending champion South Jefferson (53) and Adirondack (56) for the program’s fourth sectional title. All three teams were ranked among the top 12 Class C teams in the state and the championship forecast on MileSplitNY predicted a very close race with the Lakers finishing third. Throughout the season, the team’s mantra had been that rankings and ratings don’t win races, gutsy performances do. And the Cazenovia girls delivered. The entire squad sprinted from Title

Updates given at Annual Cazenovia Lake Summit By kate Hill Staff Writer

On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Cazenovia Lake Watershed Council (CLWC) sponsored its annual Lake Summit at the Cazenovia Public Library. The CLWC is a cooperative organization made up of two members of the Cazenovia Town Board, two Village of Cazenovia Trustees, and one representative of the Cazenovia Lake Association (CLA) — a group of residents, homeowners, business owners, and elected officials that works to protect the environmental and recreational sustainability of the lake. This year’s summit included reports from the CLWC, the CLA, Cazenovia College, the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), and the Village of Cazenovia.

This past summer, Otis + Matilda New York — a specialty women’s and men’s footwear, accessories, and home brand — opened its first brick-and-mortar location on Cazenovia’s main street. The new boutique is located at 65 Albany St. in the space that was occupied by P.E. Mulligan’s for the last 126 years. “The Otis + Matilda target customers are professionals who have an elevated taste level for both casual and dress wear,” said Derek Clark, who co-owns the business with his partner, Jason Johnson. “Our customer has an appreciation for branded footwear and accessories, and they enjoy shopping in an upscale environment and feeling good about their experience.” Clark added that he envisions Otis + Matilda evolving into a lifestyle brand that encompasses women’s footwear, accessories, and ready-to-wear alongside men’s footwear, accessories, and casual wear. Clark has over 30 years of experience building and branding wholesale and retail companies. He held senior executive positions with Macy’s West & Federated Department Stores in San Francisco and with designers Steve Madden and Perry Ellis in New York

City. He also served as senior vice president of wholesale & retail financial planning, merchandise planning & production planning for the global fashion brand Elie Tahari in New York City. “My experience within the wholesale and retail sector coupled with Jason’s experience within retail and corporate accounting made creating a brand that parallels both our careers a natural progression,” said Clark. When deciding on a name for their shared brand, Clark and Johnson were initially set on either Otis or Otis NY. However, as the brand concept evolved and

future product categories were considered, the pair decided to expand the name. At the recommendation of Johnson’s sister Ana, the co-owners added Matilda to the name. “We decided to expand the name to Otis + Matilda to allow us the flexibility to easily and quickly expand the brand’s footprint, Boutique l Page 14

On Nov. 7, the Cazenovia Town Board announced two upcoming meetings regarding the future of the town offices and the Gothic Cottage. The meetings are scheduled for Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. “I think it’s 14 years we’ve been looking at doing something for our town hall, so it’s not being taken lightly,” said Supervisor Bill Zupan. “We’ve had a lot of starts and stops. This is another start.” The topic of the town offices was raised during the meeting’s second comment period. Marc Schappell and Tom Anderson, owners of Meadowood Farms on Ridge Road encouraged the board to make its decision-making process regarding the town offices more transparent and to seek greater public input. “It would be great if we all understood what the issues were and could offer up maybe potentially different solutions,” said Schappell. Schappell and Anderson both expressed their views that moving the town offices to a new building would be a mistake. “Once you make this decision, it’s pretty irreversible, and this building will never be the same again,” said Schappell. Zupan responded to the comments by first explaining that the board decided during its Sept. 28 work session to focus its efforts on exploring offsite options for the town offices. Although no formal vote was held, each of the five board members was asked to state where they stood on the question of whether to remain in the Gothic Cottage or pursue an alternative location. Three board members opted for investigating options for moving, while two were in favor of staying. “[At the upcoming meetings], we are going to start going over everybody’s priorities and what their concerns are,” said Zupan. “We are going to look at what [the architectural firm Holmes, King, Kallquist & Associates] drew up and go from there. . . Right now, the board is looking at new, and if we keep going looking for new, then we will start looking at what we can do to preserve this building. That’s where we are now. Anybody is welcome to our meetings and to give input.” Schappell, who sits on the board of the New York Landmarks Conservancy, again voiced his concerns regarding the preservation of the historic Gothic Cottage. “It would be great if it was obvious what else this could be used for as a building, but in my experience, from a preservation Town l Page 13

the town treated 190 acres with the newly approved herbicide ProcellaCOR EC. Woods reported that this year’s rake toss showed that the milfoil has been well-controlled since the most recent herbicide application. “They usually toss this rake out about 300 times in different spots all around the lake, and it’s the same spots every year,” said Woods. “And then they meticulously count the weeds that they got when they tossed that rake. They then come up with the number of different species and [the] amount of milfoil.” The 2022 rake toss showed 114 sites with milfoil. The rake toss performed soon after the 2021 ProcellaCOR treatment showed only 25 sites with milfoil. Woods pointed out that the 2019 rake toss, which was performed just after the lake was treated with the herbicide Renovate, showed 115 milfoil occurrences. “We are really getting very, very, very good control,” he said. “We’ve never been as low as 25 [sites with milfoil] after a treatment year.” Woods noted that, as expected, the sites where milfoil was present this year are primarily in areas that were not treated with ProcellaCOR. He also highlighted that the number of native species in the lake does not appear to be changing because of the herbicide. “That’s very important not only for us but for the state,” he said. “[We] can show the state that ProcellaCOR is really pretty specific for milfoil and it’s not damaging other things.” Based on the rake toss results and consultation with SOLitude Lake Management, which applied the herbicide, and Upstate Freshwater Institute, which conducted the rake toss, the CLA has decided against treating the lake in 2023. Instead, the goal is to treat it every three years, with the next application in 2024.

Cazenovia College updates

On behalf of Dr. Thad Yorks, professor of biology and environmental biology at Cazenovia College, CLA President Dave Miller provided an update on the college/town’s ongoing European frog-bit (EFB) control efforts. EFB grows small lily pad-like leaves about the size of quarters and produces white flowers with three petals and yellow centers. Once established, the plant can form very dense floating mats that impede the movement of boats, swimmers, and even large fish and diving ducks. The dense mats also create poor growth conditions in the water column that can threaten the survival of native species. For the past several summers, teams of Cazenovia College-employed crewmembers and community volunteers have worked to handpull and discard as many of the invasive plants as possible. Through their efforts, the lake has been cleared of EFB and the plant has been confined to the wetlands north of the lake. “It’s going to be an ongoing issue,” said Miller. “It’s so far into the wetlands that there is no way it’s all going to ever be taken out. It’s not going to happen.” The plan is to continue controlling the EFB next summer at a cost of $2,000. “The town has been paying for it, so hopefully the town can find the two grand to do that,” said Miller. “It’s not a lot of money for protecting the lake. If we let it go, it would just take over the shoreline.” Miller also reported that the college and the CLA have partnered to purchase an electrofishing boat for surveying the lake.

Nov. 9, 2022 3

Eagle News • CNY’s Community News Source An electrofishing boat uses an electric field to temporarily stun fish, which can then be collected with long-handled dip nets for identification. Data collected from electrofishing can be used to determine the abundance, density, species composition, and health of fish populations. According to Miller, the goals of the purchase are to modernize Cazenovia’s fish tracking abilities, provide better long-term data on fish populations, and enhance the college’s environmental biology and biology programs, which both benefit the lake. “Thad’s students [will be able to survey] multiple spots on the lake in a very quick period of time, so it gives us a much better idea of the fish populations [and] it doesn’t hurt the fish,” said Miller. Funding has been secured through a grant from New York State as well as a donation from the CLA. The boat is currently in production and is expected to be completed in time for spring.

CLA’s five-year plan

Miller next discussed CLA’s five-year plan to undertake six key projects related to the health of the lake. According to Miller, the organization will continue to support ESF’s use of Cazenovia Lake as a subject for its research on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) and water quality. The CLA has completed three years of sampling as part of its long-term sampling project, and its HAB sampling is ongoing. The sampling program involves sampling three times per year at three lake locations, sampling two times per year at the six highest inflow tributaries, and sampling potential HABs as they occur. Upstate Freshwater Institute performs the chemical analysis, Cornell does the zooplankton analysis, and Cooper Labs does the invertebrate analysis. The goals of the program are to detect changes in water quality over time, monitor the lake ecosystem, and alert entities of areas to avoid in the event of a HAB. Miller also reported that the CLA’s ProcellaCOR milfoil treatment project has been completed, and its community outreach and sewer investigation are ongoing. Regarding the CLA’s goal of reducing silt inflows into the lake, Miller said the organization is working to improve a culvert at the intersection of Rt. 92 and Rt. 20 and is making progress on addressing dam backflow issues at the south end of the lake. According to Miller, the CLA is collaborating with the New York State Canal Corporation, the town, the village, the Cazenovia Preservation Foundation (CPF), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and outside consultants to stop the backflow. He explained that there are two dams downstream of the lake outlet. The lake dam or upper dam is located near Carpenter’s Pond. Mill Street dam (lower dam or creek dam), which was built to serve the Erie Canal system, is a little further downstream. Both are owned and operated by the Canal Corporation. Just east (downstream) of the lake dam, Chittenango Creek meets the water flowing out of the lake to form a single channel. Miller explained that when the water level between the dams is high, any significant precipitation/snow melt can cause the water to flow the wrong way; instead of moving downstream, water backflows over the lake dam and into the lake, carrying with it significant amounts of sediment and pollutants. “When we look at the beach, the Brewster

Inn, and properties over there, they are constantly losing water depth because of the amount of silt that’s inflowing,” Miller said. “This was happening four or five times a year.” Miller stated that as a short-term solution to the issue, the Canal Corporation kept the water between the dams low over the summer to allow for rapid drainage in a storm event. They also installed boards in front of the Mill St. dam sluice gates to retain a base level of water in the creek between the dams. He also announced that the CLA and CPF conducted a cleanup between the dams on July 28 and that he has observed significant vegetation growth along the banks of the creek. The ultimate solution to the backflow issue, Miller explained, will be to restore the stream between the dams to its natural, pre-Erie Canal state and appearance. CLA contracted with Ramboll engineering company to conduct a limited feasibility study primarily focused on examining the partial or full removal of Mill Street dam and determining whether the removal would have any flooding impacts downstream. According to Miller, the study proved that the removal would eliminate backflow events. It also identified a couple of areas where improvements will need to be made to avoid downstream problems, and it determined that a stream restoration will improve fish/wildlife habitats. The village has applied for a grant to take the next step of completing additional design work and permitting for the Mill Street dam removal and the subsequent stream restoration. The village should hear if it has been awarded the grant by the end of the year.

SUNY ESF research

Anne McElwee, a Ph.D. candidate in the ESF Department of Chemistry, reported the findings of recent research on algal blooms in Cazenovia Lake. “Residents have reported multiple blooms over several years, some of which have been found to be toxic upon further testing,” McElwee said. She noted that when the blooms reported from 2013 to 2021 are mapped, they do not appear to be concentrated in a specific area. According to McElwee, her research with Dr. Greg Boyer, professor in the ESF Department of Chemistry, is aimed at addressing two key questions. “[The first is,] why are blooms occurring?” she said. “Where are they getting nutrients from? Are they coming from surface runoff — from external sources — or are they coming from the sediments in the bottom of the lake — internal loading or internal sources? Another question is, where are the blooms occurring? Are there specific sites that are more likely to have blooms, and could that potentially lead us to sources of nutrients?” To investigate the potential internal loading of nutrients, ESF installed a buoy in the deep-

est part of the lake to measure temperature, dissolved oxygen, and depth. To examine where blooms are occurring, the researchers installed instrument probes called sondes on three docks — two on the east side of the lake and one on the west side — to measure chlorophyll and phycocyanin, a blue-green algae pigment. McElwee said the data gathered from the buoy shows that the lake stratified strongly during the summer and that the bottom waters went anoxic (depleted of dissolved oxygen). “That is important because when that happens you have iron(III), which is reduced to iron(II), and that allows for phosphorus to be released from the sediments, which can serve as a source of nutrients when the lake turns over,” she said. McElwee then pointed out that, according to the data, the lake-wide Dolichospermum bloom that occurred in late September 2022 coincided with the lake beginning to turn over. “It looks like the bloom occurred about a day after the water that was 11 meters down started to mix with the rest of the water,” she said. The researcher also reported that the sondes on the docks did not appear to detect the September bloom.

Village updates and Lakeland Park

Village Trustee Cindy Bell provided an update on the village’s ongoing work reconstructing the historic lake wall at Lakeland Park. According to Bell, the diving board was removed this past summer to allow for repairs to the swim area wall, but it will be reinstalled next summer. “From the pier, we’ve worked our way south and we’ve rounded the bend,” said Bell. “. . . As long as they have the weather, they are going to continue to work, and they’re going to go right to where the first phase of that wall rebuild was.” Bell also shared the Lakeside Park boat launch statistics for 2022, reporting 247 out-oftown users for the season, 441 village and town users, 80 day passes issued, and four boat removals. Ted Bartlett, chairman of the Village of Cazenovia Historic Preservation/Architectural Review Committee, offered insight into the past and future of Lakeland Park. Bartlett, who is a senior associate with Crawford & Stearns, Architects and Preservation Planners, began his presentation with an overview of the property’s evolution from a wetland to a private estate to a village-owned public park. He emphasized the fact that because it started out as a swamp, the land had to be built by man. “What caused its deterioration?” asked Bartlett. “One, basic assumptions that it would be there forever and that it was well built — neither of which was correct. Second, lack of maintenance. And I’m not pointing the finger Summit l Page 14

Get enough sleep

There are many important issues to focus on when it comes to personal health. Whether it is cardiovascular health, a balanced diet, adequate amounts of exercise or staying well hydrated to name just a few, all of these elements of our daily lives work together to help keep us healthy and feeling our best. But as often as many of these topics are discussed there is one that can be glanced over at times, but plays just as important role in our overall health. It is easy to overlook it, with a fast paced life that often has us up early and out the door or putting in a few extra hours late at night, but getting a proper amount of sleep is vital. With the recent changes in the season, days getting shorter and daylight hours fewer and the clocks falling back an hour, it is likely many of us will be even more off schedule than perhaps we are accustomed to. According to a recent survey presented by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, four out of 10 Upstate New York adults are not getting enough sleep. It is recommended that adults get about seven hours of sleep per day, but this is not always so easy with the demands of work and other obligations. And the time change only compounds this according to at least on physician. “Turning our clocks forward each March and turning them back each November disrupts our body’s natural 24-hour cycle, or circadian rhythm,” said Richard Lockwood, M.D., Excellus BlueCross BlueShield vice president and chief medical officer. “The impact on an already sleep-deprived society is like nationally imposed jet lag, although it’s easier to adjust in the fall, when we gain an hour, than it is in the spring, when we lose one.” Among the findings from this survey were some interesting results. The survey indicates that men are significantly more likely than women to report getting seven or more hours of sleep each night and the average hours of sleep vary with age. Compared with other age groups, adults 35 to 44-years-old are the least likely to get seven hours or more of sleep at night. Significantly more adults age 65 and older report getting the most sleep. The survey also found that 1 in 5 adults report that they snore. More men report snoring than women and more than half of adults (especially women) report often feeling tired during the day and in addition to this, 8 out of 10 adults have tried at least one method to improve sleep. As sleep plays an important role in total health, it has been found that a lack of sleep can contribute to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and depression, although it’s not clear whether sleep disruption leads to these clinical problems or the problems disturb sleep, according to the survey. Poor sleep is linked with impaired decision-making and decreased alertness, which can result in injuries to the sleep-deprived and/or those around them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that in 2017, 91,000 police-reported crashes involved drowsy drivers. Those crashes led to an estimated 50,000 injuries and nearly 800 deaths. Lack of sleep also is an economic issue. The National Safety Council estimates that worker fatigue costs employers $136 billion a year in health-related lost productivity. To help get a better night’ sleep it is recommended that you keep the bedroom quiet, dark and cool. Avoid large meals, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol before bed. Stick to a consistent sleep schedule, including on weekends. In addition it is recommended that that people exercise regularly, establish a relaxing bedtime routine and turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bed.

We need to bridge the gap Last week, Chloe, a friend for more than 60 years, sent me an email. Another classmate had died. True to life, we continue to lose those members of the Class of ’58 who have all scattered beyond Carmel, N.Y., but remained a safe harbor, if only in memories. Each of us has left the close fold of Carmel High School, building other relationships and friends, but retaining that sense of belonging that is almost magical. All of these connections have helped to shape who we are, what we know and believe, providing a guiding context for our lives, defining who we are, what we hold dear, our belief systems, right, left and middle. It has long been an observation that, with the industrial revolution, the status of the elderly in society has changed. Once revered for the lifetime accumulation of knowledge and experience, the older members of society have fallen prey to the rapid nature of change. As we age, as Longfellow so sadly wrote, the world changes. We lose those connections, finding what we know and believe to be … outdated? Irrelevant? Obsolescent? closer to being the” last leaf ” … an aloneness and isolation that has psychological, sociological and medical implications. It wasn’t too long ago that Excellus asked its members to share ideas about how to counter the loneliness of age, with the implication that finding solutions was as

important as treatment with pharmaceuticals. This loneliness can be a loss of purpose, friends, loved ones, connections to the changing world, the ability to identify with ideas and behaviors that have become common for those younger, becoming “strangers in a strange land.” As obvious as the effect of change on the older portion of our population, less notable is the effect of the same forces on other subsets of society. Last Sunday, one of the columnists in the Post, analyzing the roots of the Jan. 6 insurrection, pointed out that, in a rapidly changing culture, some will be left behind, will become what is a favorite adjective these days, marginalized. They feel that their ideas, their moral code, their friends, their reality is been devalued and replaced by another reality. The life blood and the vulnerability of democracy is that, when the movement of ideas clash, some will gain credence while other will lose support. The right to push back, to find ways to solidify one’s world view in that marketplace, has many rejecting the slower, more tedious work that maintaining one’s world view in in a democracy requires. A wily demagogue can capture this discontent and harness it for his or her purposes. Read your history books about the fallout from World War I in Germany and the rise of Hitler and I am sure that you can see parallels

in the headlines today. Just as my insurance company is seeking creative ideas to ameliorate the effect of loneliness among the older members of society, there probably should be an equal effort to find ways to accommodate the effects of rapid technological and societal change throughout our culture. Immediate to this is the concept of basing one’s actions on verifiable facts rather than the misinformation that has so easily divided us. The sense of aloneness is not the sole property of the older portion of our population; aloneness is the malady that affects those who feel they are not heard. In a functioning democracy, it takes work by everyone to maintain an equilibrium among all competing ideas. Maintaining the processes by which all sides have a voice is difficult, particularly when one or more subcultures resort to misinformation and violence. The shocking news that the spouse of the Speaker of the House was attacked in his home, that the attacker was searching for “Nancy” to torture her, is beyond belief. This was not the action of some solitary Wakadoo, but rather the carefully-cultivated actions spurred on by disinformation and concocted conspiracy theories accepted by many who are among the discontented marginalized. This morning, one news program discussed the threats made to the individuals who work on elections in Georgia, an example of the growing re-

Ramblings from the empty nest

Ann Ferro sort to violence that will only eliminate those processes that support democratic discourse. By the time this is published, the midterm elections will have been finalized, that is, unless those who lost declare the election to be “rigged.” The far-morethan-annoying television ads that use guilt by association, awful pictures and downright fabrication are over. The lawn signs will be gone. What happens next is always up to all of us. Pundits tell us that we have been moved closer to losing what our founding father’s established, closer to dictatorial rule that promotes the interests of those who enable its power, a careful progression made possible by separating the electorate into hostile groups. It’s easy to identify people by their political stance rather than all of the ways that people are. The right, the left, the middle and the remaining members of the Carmel High School Class of “58 have to move across the chasms so purposely created to divide and conquer our democratic institutions by once again talking, connections, listening, debating and understanding that we all have to live in this world together. Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Years Ago in History

By Cindy Bell Tobey

95 Years Ago – Nov. 10, 1927

The first snow of the season came last Thursday night covering everything to the depth of several inches. Lilac bushes in many places about town broke off with the weight of the snow on the foliage. Friday was a very stormy day, the walking was bad and it seemed like genuine winter, no squaw about it. The weather continued cold and the snow thawed but little. Two-horse bob sleighs were seen. A rural delivery carrier from Canastota post office delivering mail on the Mile Strip with an automobile was obliged to be pulled out of the drifts with a team of horses on account of the deep snow. Sunday night there was a regular blizzard. Cars were stuck in the snow and even Monday traveling was difficult. The snow plow cleared the village walks for the first time on Monday morning. The snow has melted some but a good covering is still with us.

75 Years Ago – Nov. 6, 1947

The newly formed Cazenovia Chamber Music Group, sponsored by the Cazenovia Junior College under the musical direction of Dr. Albert Hess, will hold its first rehearsal Monday evening, Nov. 10 at 8 o’clock in the Presbyterian Chapel. College

music students will form the nucleus of the group. A cordial invitation to join is extended to any string or woodwind player in the community. Due to an error the first announcement stressed unusual instruments and recorders which may have discouraged many. This will be strictly an amateur group of varying skills and all who now play or have played in the past are urged to attend. Music will be carefully chosen to give interest to the more advanced as well as to the beginner. If you own, please bring a music stand.

50 Years Ago – Nov. 8, 1972

Cazenovia area youngsters will have the chance to solve the age-old mystery of the Idiot Stick and to match Flipper Dinger skills with their schoolmates. The unique objects, handcrafted wooden toys which charmed generations of children in early America, will be among four premiums available to those opening Christmas Club accounts beginning Nov. 13 at First Trust and Deposit Co. The Flipper Dinger is a carved tube with a hole at the top of the far end. A cornstalk ball on a wire is placed in the hole. The object is be blow gently through the tube so the cornstalk ball will float in the air. A wire rim, suspended from the end of the tube,

will hook the property “launched” ball. The Idiot Stick is a hollowed stick with a notched stick on one end and a rubber band on the other. Properly manipulated, it offers a teaser to onlookers.

25 Years Ago – Nov. 12, 1997

Together in a semi-circle, wearing thick jackets and hats to ward off the late fall weather, Burton Street Elementary first graders excitedly raised their hands and shouted out their favorite piece of playground equipment to state Senator Nancy Larraine Hoffmann. Hoffmann stopped by Burton Street Elementary to make a presentation to the Burton Street Elementary Parents and Teachers Association (PTA). She presented a check for $10,000 to help with the costs of a handicap accessible playground which was recently finished at the school. She has helped secure grants for similar playgrounds in Canastota, Sylvan Beach, Syracuse and in other areas in her district. In total, the project cost close to $30,000 said Margaret Lane, co-president of the PTA. She said the balance of the project was paid through donations made by parents and through fund raisers such as a sweatshirt sale. “It’s been really great,” Lane said, “It’s here and the kids are having fun with it.”

I’m quite sure you made a marriage vow to love and cherish him until death do you part. As I didn’t see anything about your husband’s feelings about abortion, aren’t his feelings equally important?

Odds are they’ll use the video board to send a message similar to what I saw at Phoenix before the pair of sectional boys soccer title games last Tuesday night. Five minutes long, it features former NFL and college basketball official Gene Steratore and

They cite numbers about how incidents involving the abuse of officials have grown in recent years, and that a good percentage of officials quit within a few years for that very reason. society. You may have heard that this was election season. Tuesday brought us the merciful end to all those incessant attack ads that clog the airwaves and lead to complete cynicism about the whole democratic process. The only reason any of this is even remotely tolerable is that the alternative is a society where there aren’t any elections and we don’t get to make the decisions for ourselves with ballots. Too drastic? Not really.

It wasn’t so long ago that we could safely navigate election season, avoiding all the noise pollution knowing that results would be accepted by all sides and we could proceed with our lives. But as our country has turned more polarized more than ever, part of the mindset is, at least on the extremes, refusing to accept anything other than total victory. caz Swimmers help in title win by Phil Blackwell

In recent years, Cazenovia High School has provided a reliable pipeline to the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team that has home meets right down the road at Cazenovia College. Even after Morgan Kingsley’s graduation, the flow of talent continued to make an impact as Kate Millson led a quartet that contributed to yet another Hornets run to the Section III Class A championship. F-M had seen its 64-meet win streak ended by Liverpool in September, but swept the rest of its regular-season slate and, in the sectional meet last Wednesday at Nottingham High School, got payback, scoring 379 points to beat out the Warriors (330) and Cicero-North Syracuse (324) for the top spot. Millson, a junior, would help F-M win the opening 200-yard medley relay, pairing with Cecilia Cao, Elise Wratney and Georgia Langan to prevail in one minutes, 52.73 seconds to top C-NS’s 1:55.40 and prevail. On her own, Millson contended in the 200-yard individual medley, her time of 2:24.49 setting a season mark by more than four seconds as she took third behind Oswego-Mex-

ico star Alexa von Holtz (2:07.71) and was just behind C-NS’s Leah Benedict (2:23.58). Also, Millson got to the finals of the 500 freestyle, where her 5:47.26 could not quite match her seasonbest 5:46.02 but still put her in seventh place overall. Another Cazenovia student, sophomore Eliza Smith, earned ninth place in the Class A 100 butterlfy in a season-best 1:10.22 while improving her 500 freestyle time nearly 14 seconds to 6:07.50 for 12th place. Maeve Kelly, also a sophomore, swam and dove for the Hornets, finishing 15th in the 200 IM in 2:41.53 after the Oct. 29 diving competitoin where she was 17th overall. Freshman Izzy Comeau was 19th in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.69. During Friday’s sectional state qualifier, Millson again was in the 200 medley relay, where in a time of 1:52.51 F-M just missed out on advancing to the state meet, inches behind New Hartford’s winning 1:52.26. In the 200 IM, Millson claimed eighth place in 2:27.96 before she finished ninth in the 500 freestyle in a season-best 5:41.88. And in the 400 freestyle relay, Millson joined Grace Reyna, Samantha Roddy and Kelly Liu to take sixth place in 3:58.61.

Cazenovia girls swimmer Kate Millson (far left) joined (from left) Georgia Langan, Elise Wratney and Cecilia Cao in helping Fayetteville-Manlius win the 200 medley relay at last Wednesday’s Section III Class A championships. All of this helped F-M earn 268.5 points in the team standings, beat-

ing everyone except New Hartford, whose 277 points helped it earn the

George Falwell Cup for the first time since 2005.

Caz football drops sectional Class C semifinal

Cazenovia’s Jack Byrnes (2) lunges for a fourth-quarter touchdown. by Phil Blackwell Quiet despair had transformed itself into electrified hope on the sidelines of the Cazenovia football team in the fourth quarter of last Saturday’s Section III Class C semifinal at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. Once down double digits, the undefeated, state no. 2-ranked Lakers had now tied General Brown, and there was time enough to make one more defensive stop and, perhaps, pull out one of the most dra-

matic and emotional victories in program history. Instead, Cazenovia watched as the Lions mounted a clutch drive of its own, found the end zone and then snuffed out the Lakers’ last chance to prevail 30-22 and advance to next Sunday’s sectional final at the JMA Wireless Dome against Holland Patent. Those who attended this game, whichever team they rooted for, were treated to an emotional contest on a warm, wind-swept afternoon where GB had full command most

What made the Lakers’ rally so remarkable was the way it had struggled in so many aspects of the game throughout the early stages, from dropped passes to penalties to a defense pushed around by the Li-

ons’ physical ground attack. GB led 14-0 before Cazenovia got on the board in the second quarter, J.P. Hoak able to complete a series of passes, including a 30-yarder to Jack Byrnes, before Hoak went the final three yards for the touchdown. Quickly answering, the Lions’ Gabe Malcolm, who already had a 40-yard TD run, went 52 yards deep into Cazenovia territory, setting up his own three-yard scoring run that made it 22-6, where it stood at halftime. Things began to turn when the Lakers stopped GB on fourth down inside its own 20 early in the third period, one of several instances where the Lions had a chance to all put the game away. Another stop in GB territory led to a quick drive as Hoak went 23 yards to Jack Donlin for the TD and also hit Donlin on a two-point pass, cutting the Lakers’ deficit in half to 22-14 with plenty of time left. Even an injury delay as the Lakers attended to defensive back Alex Kuper early in the final period didn’t faze the Lakes, who got yet another fourth-down stop at its own 26. A 74-yard scoring march followed, the key play a 10-yard rollout pass to Christian Schug on fourthand-10. Then, from the Lions’ 26,

Hoak threw to the end zone and found Byrnes with 5:32 to play. Moments later, Brayden Weismore found his way past the goal line for two points. Cazenovia had tied it 22-22 and believed that, unlike 2021 on this same field and in this same round against Skaneateles, it would find a way through to the title game. It didn’t take long, though, for GB to dash those dreams. Going back to the ground, it used most of the remaining clock and drove inside Cazenovia’s 30 and then changed it up, Aiden McManaman finding Kyler Kovalik-Derrigo on a 25-yard pass. One play later, with just 42.4 seconds left, Kaleb Natali converted on a five-yard run, with a two-point conversion to follow. Going into a stiff wind, the Lakers’ last chance was snuffed out when Malcolm intercepted Hoak at the Lions’ 33. Hoak threw 36 passes, completing 17 of them for 233 yards as Byrnes caught seven passes for 119 yards, but the Lakers were held to a season-low 81 yards on the ground, not even one-fifth what the Lions did with 425 rushing yards. Brad Gagnon and Jed Olkowski led Cazenovia’s defense with eight tackles apiece.

Caz boys runners second at sectional meet by Phil Blackwell

If ever there was a time a visiting side could fault home-course advantage, the Cazenovia boys cross country team could do so at the conclusion of last Saturday’s Section III Class C championships. Here were the Lakers, assured of posting its best-ever finish at a sectional meet, and the only thing in the way of a first sectional title was the home side from VernonVerona-Sherrill. And it was the Red Devils, with 79 points, holding off Cazenovia (82 points) by three points to win the team title and

advance to this weekend’s state meet as Mexico was third with 112 points. Individually, it was senior Branden McColm leading the Lakers, going 18 minutes, 49.8 seconds to make his way to ninth place, seventh among runners outside of VVS. Running together, senior Will Austin and eighth-grader Jake Woolbert got into the top 15, Austin getting 13th place in 19:07.8 as Woolbert was 14th in 19:11.8. Sophomore Kooper Wilmot was 22nd in 19:42.2 as junior Garret Lounsbury was 24th in 19:47.6 and junior Eddie Comeau was 27th in 19:55.5.

To win it, VVS needed Jordan Wingert (18:38.5) and Nathan Geroux (18:43.0) to finish just ahead of McColm, plus Rowan Planck (19:17.5) and Ben Bellinger (19:19.2) to crack the top 20 and a 29thplace finish from R.J. Krupski to fend off the Lakers. Up in Class B, Chittenango finished second to New Hartford in the girls sectional race as junior Laura Powers earned a berth in the state meet with her third-place time of 21:35.3. Powers was joined by sophomore Ani McCarthy, who claimed the fifth and final individual spot when she finished in

22:53.6 as Bailee Burton, in 24:12.3, edged out Mariah Stewart (24:13.4) and Sophia DiGennaro (24:20.8) for 20th place. The boys Bears were fourth in Class B, but star senior Caleb Leblanc earned a trip to the state meet when he made his way to third place in 18:02.9, not far from the winning 17:46.9 by Jamesville-DeWitt’s Connor Clarkson. Kaleb Toscano, in a time of 19:21.1, got 16th place for Chittenango, with Manu Tipa 20th among team runners in 19:42.8 as Logan Rogers (21:03.0) was ahead of Gavin Roach (21:21.7).

Cazenovia girls volleyball stopped in Class C final by Phil Blackwell

For an entire season, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team had worked toward exactly what it was going to face Saturday at nearby Chittenango High School. With the Section III Class C championship at stake, the Lakers would try and dethrone its namesakes from Skaneateles, but never really get too close in a three-set defeat. Cazenovia earned this chance by prevailing last Tuesday in the sectional semifinal against no. 3 seed Phoenix, taking just three sets to put away the Firebirds. The opening set was important.

In response, Zupan stated that he does not want his legacy to be that he “ruined the Gothic Cottage.” The supervisor also assured Schappell and Anderson that once the town has determined its town hall requirements, the board plans to hold public meetings to gather input from the community and gradually refine its plan. “We are thrilled to hear it will be something people will be able to speak to,” said Anderson.

Phoenix had its share of runs, but by a 25-22 margin the Lakers seized the early lead, then blitzed through the second set 25-7. A long third set followed, the Firebirds trying to extend the match, but Cazenovia breaking a 24-24 tie and then earning match point to win 26-24 and advance. Maren Smith had a tremendous allaround effort, earning 15 kills and adding 14 digs, three aces and three blocks, while Ashley Lordon finished with six kills. Aside from her four kills, Zoe McLean matched Smith with 14 digs, as did Olivia Prykl, as Becca Ziemba earned 16 assists and Lucy Bliss had 10 assists, to

go with eight digs. Four days later, Cazenovia took another shot at a Skaneateles side it had not earned a set against in their regularseason encounters on Sept. 16 and Oct. 13. The first six points of the match went to Skaneateles, and with the likes of Ayla Pas’cal, Kate Raddant and Maddy and Alice Bender in great form, it ended 25-14. When it came to the second set, it got even more lopsided. Dominant serving from junior Maggie Lootens led to a string of points and a big margin that only grew until Skaneateles had the second set 25-8. Cazenovia did play a bit better in the

third set, but that only delayed things a bit. Skaneateles closed out the sweep 25-14 and, by doing so, advanced to this weekend’s regional round. Smith finished with five kills, three blocks and eight digs. Bliss and Ziemba each got three assists. Olivia Prykl got seven digs, with Ziemba and Corrine Albicker earning six digs apiece Finishing the season at 14-4 overall, Cazenovia will see four seniors – Smith, McLean, Lordaon and Albicker – graduate. However, Ziemba, Bliss, Prykl, Mya Skeele and Anna Bjork will be among the many players set to return in 2023.

ments to the preliminary budget prior to adoption. The adjustments to were made to the General Fund A Appropriations, General Fund B Appropriations, General Fund B Revenues, Water Pollution Control Facility Appropriations, Cazenovia Fire Protection Appropriations, Route 20 Joint Water District Appropriations, and CAVAC Ambulance District Appropriations. Zupan stated that the town did not exceed New York State’s two percent property tax levy growth cap. “We’ve stayed $20,514.99 under the two percent cap,” he said. The final budget will be posted and available for viewing on the town website. The board approved the use of Ridge Road, Ten Eyck Ave., Lincklaen Road, and Syosset Drive for the 18th Annual Chilly Chili Run 5K Run/Walk scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023 starting at 1 p.m. During his report, Councilor Kyle Reger announced that the Cazenovia

Zoning Board of Appeals and the Cazenovia Planning Board are both actively looking for additional members. “For those who haven’t been to any of [those meetings], there really are fascinating details that they get into and they’re really vital for our community,”

Reger said. The Cazenovia Town Board typically meets on the second Monday of every month at 7:30 p.m. For more information, visit townofcazenovia.digitaltowpath.org or call the town office at 315655-9213.

The village has owned it since the 30s, and they took care of it, but they didn’t do things like structural repairs and things like that. So, it’s not blaming the village, it’s just what happened.” Bartlett then presented an overview of the village’s Lakeland Park Master Plan, which was originally commissioned in 2016 and completed in 2017. “We had two public hearings,” said Bartlett, who has sat on the Lakeland Park Committee since 2010. “The public liked the presentations and the ideas. Whether they purchase on their first visit or in the future, we want to make sure they know we appreciate them, their business, and their time spent in the store.” Otis + Matilda officially opened in August and launched its e-commerce website, otisandmatilda.com, in September. Clark expressed that being part of the downtown business community has been a wonderful experience so far, due in large part to a welcoming customer base. “Our business has grown incrementally week over week for the past 13 weeks with

high conversion rates, a growing e-commerce platform, and consistent repeat customer growth,” he explained. “We’ve remained laser-focused to our business plan and have successfully maneuvered our model through the current supply chain challenges as well as the long lead times within the footwear industry. It’s important to never forget, retail is details.” Clark also remarked on his positive experiences working with and learning from some of the “real merchants” within the local retail community. “Anyone can open or operate a store, but a merchant succeeds at it,” he said. “For example, Cazenovia Abroad has succeeded in Cazenovia for fifty-plus years. That’s an ac-

complishment few retailers will ever get to experience. We look forward to being a part of Cazenovia’s growing retail footprint, supporting our neighboring businesses, and giving back to the community that has supported us and future causes. I hope Cazenovia is proud of their downtown village. It is very special. Think big, support small.” Otis + Matilda New York is currently planning a special evening for the annual Cazenovia Christmas walk/Tree Lighting on Friday, Dec. 2. Further details will follow. Major items yet to be tackled include parking lot improvements, grading and drainage, perimeter pathways, swim area decking, removal of the existing performance pavilion and creation of a lakeside picnic pavilion, construction of a new multipurpose pavilion, landscaping and tree planting, beach area improvements, pier masonry repairs, lagoon repairs, signage,

archaeological interpretation of the Lakeland House mansion site, iron fence repairs, electrical work, architecture/engineering/landscape designs, and public boat docks. Bartlett also highlighted “surprise” work that is needed, such as rebuilding a collapsed section of wall south of Carpenter’s Barn and repairing the privately owned stone wall on the north side of the park. “We are reconvening the [Lakeland Park] committee with some new members, and we’ll be starting this spring looking at how we move forward, where we go for grants, [and] and how we put these packages together,” Bartlett said. “. . . There is still a lot of planning and work to undertake to complete the rehabilitation vision of Lakeland Park, but we’re getting there.”

just one place behind her teammate, capturing sixth in 21:40.2, two places ahead of her pre-race ranking. Faith Wheeler delivered her strongest race of the season, passing multiple opponents in the final mile to earn the top finish among any senior. Wheeler’s ninth-place, 22:13 effort was two positions ahead of expectations to pull the team closer to victory. Junior Dinah Gifford was also impressive, running a tough race to claim 12th in 22:51.5, four spots above her ranking, including two rivals passed in the final 200 meters. Number five Laker runner Zoey Gagne proved to be the deciding factor for Cazenovia. Despite the heroic efforts of Laker runners one through four, both key opponents

still had a slight advantage. Then Gagne delivered a season-best effort to finish 18th overall in 23:13.1, four spots ahead of the fifth South Jefferson runner and 18 places ahead of Adirondack’s final scorer to lock in the Laker victory. In total, the five Cazenovia scorers crossed the line in a span of just 13 places and one minute 36 seconds, an exceptional team performance. Haylee Stearns (number six for Cazenovia in 29th, 24:10.6) and Olivia Wong (seventh for the team in 30th, 24:10.8) both contributed to the victory by displacing the fifth Adirondack scorer. Senior Bonnie Pittman was just two places back in 24:24.7 while teammates Sedona Mil-

lard (27:50) and Ilsa Denton (28:41) also ran well for the Lakers. Perhaps even more impressive than Cazenovia’s first place finish among the 13 Class C squads to earn the title was their fifth place standing among 73 teams in the overall Section III merged results, with only Class A powers Fayetteville-Manlius, Cicero-North Syracuse, Liverpool and West Genesee topping the Lakers. Their strong overall finish bodes well for their prospects next week. Cazenovia now advances to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet, also hosted by VVS, this Saturday, at 12:30 to represent Section III against the top Class C teams from across New York State.

sometimes, heaven forbid, a call or two might go against their side. The vitriol that follows is both predictable and depressing. You know what it does? It can turn even the most enthusiastic sports fan jaded,

knowing that, wherever they may go, the same shrill chorus rises up no matter what transpires. Now imagine how officials feel. They don’t sign up to do this for money. They love sports, too, and want to stay connected to them while also staying in shape and unselfishly giving back. Meanwhile, people not qualified to do so sit up in the stands, pretend to coach people who are already getting (we hope) good coaching from the sidelines and then throw fits when everything doesn’t’ go their way. All of us need to chill out, or the sports we take for granted might fade away. Already in high school football they had to resort to a larger Thursday schedule to have enough officials on hand. Similar changes might affect all the team sports if a new generation of men and women don’t join the ranks. This puts the onus on us. Say you’re at

the Dome this weekend, and a big call goes the other way. What do you do? Back to that video I mentioned at the start. Gene Steratore mentioned that, in these moments, the best thing is to stop and consider what your kid might think if you acted out, and proceed from there, good or bad. When our politics and so many other aspects of our society harp on the necessity of victory, it’s quite easy to apply that toxic message to our own lives and expect the same, regardless of consequences. Thus, it’s more important than ever to slow down and remember that all of us are mortal. A lot more understanding, and a lot less selfishness, will help the games continue.
