Inaugural ‘Care Walk’ for Cooley’s anemia slated for May 1

On May 1, people around the United States will gather and take a stroll to support the Cooley’s Anemia Foundation during its first ever Care Walk.

Locally, East Syracuse mom Jennifer Stagnitta has been spreading the word about the walk she’s organizing to raise funds for beta-thalassemia major research — the medical term for Cooley’s anemia.

“I don’t think it’s going to be huge,” Jennifer said of the 2011 walk, scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. at the Onondaga Lake Park Willow Bay Shelter walking trail.

If 20 people show up, it’s a success.

“I just want to make it where everybody and anybody can participate,” she said.

Jennifer is planning a two-mile walk.

“If you don’t have a reason to walk in this Care Walk, you won’t,” she said. “People aren’t going to come out unless they have a connection.”

Many people may have a connection and not even realize it.

Consequently, they were also faced with raising a child affected by the blood disorder that less than 1,000 people in the U.S. suffer from.

T h i s M a y, Ju n i o r Achievement of Central New York will hold its biggest fundraiser. The 26th annual Bowl-a-thon typically raises more than a quarter of the organization’s total yearly budget.

“Many businesses use it as a fun outing for their companies and to help build camaraderie while supporting a good cause,” said Kathy Harter, JA of CNY president and event coordinator. Individuals are also encouraged to participate and can sign on with a team that already exists or create their own with friends and family.

JA of CNY is a volunteer-based organization that serves more than 5,000 students with programs involving financial literacy, workplace readiness and entrepreneurship education. Proceeds from the event will fund these inschool activities.

The benefit will be held over a two-week period: Thursday and Friday May 5 and 6 as well as Wednesday through Friday May 11, 12 and 13 at Strike ‘n Spare in Mattydale. Most companies choose one night to bowl but may choose more if See Bowl, page 13

Don’t rain on OUR Easter parade!

Get ready to jam Kellish Hill Music Barn to hold two-day fundraiser May 6, 7

By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com More than 21 musical acts will entertain guests at Kellish Hill Music Barn’s weekend fundraiser, “Come Rise to the Occasion,” on Friday and Saturday May 6 and 7.

The Salt Potatoes, Larry Hoyt, the Salt City Ramblers, the Pond Creek Bog Stompers and Diamond Someday are among the locallybased artists set to play at the twoday event.

“People coming to our fundraiser can expect an awesome show with plenty of variety ...,” said owner Kathy Kellish. “[A] $10 ticket for either day gives you access to a minimum of six bands on Friday evening and as many as 15 bands on Saturday.”

Since 2006, the barn has become a regular host for local and sometimes national bands that perform anything from light rock to folk music; bluegrass to Grateful Dead cover tunes. Recently, Kellish Hill was nominated for a SAMMY Award in the “Best Live Acoustic Music Venue in the Syracuse Area.” Out of 128 venues, it sprung to the Top 4.

“The outpouring of support from the local music community was truly a validation that we are providing a much-needed service and making an impact on people’s lives,” said owner Kathy Kellish. “Repeatedly, people who attend our concerts, open mics and Sunday jams have told us there is no other venue that provides what we do.”

Kellish said she and her husband Rick Harding would like to expand their role as a major acoustic venue in Syracuse by attracting a wider

spectrum of the music community to their heated music barn, located on the family farm, while also educating visitors through music, dance and art.

The music barn offers an idealistic country setting in the hills of Pompey; it offers a lodge to accommodate musicians passing through the area. It is also used for more intimate house concerts and jams throughout the year.

“Our farm people refer to it as sanctuary for their musical soul and that means the world to me,” Kellish said. “We are different from other music venues in the fact that we do not serve alcohol – people come here to hear the music, and bands love it because they have an attentive audience.”

In addition to growing the music scene, Kellish said they are eager to begin cultivating ethnic crops to keep the farm agriculturally viable – a sort of Agritourism, if you will.

“We are currently looking into ways of securing this farm for future generations to enjoy as well,” she said.

The fundraiser, “Come Rise to the Occasion,” was organized to fund much-needed improvements at the barn that will be essential to accommodate the bands during its First Annual American Music Festival this summer.

“We do not receive any grant funding so we do rely on the private sector for donations and charging folks for events to keep the music flowing at our farm,” Kellish said.

Building a second stage is a high priority for the July festival, which will also run an entire weekend and bring in multiple musicians.

Eagle Bulletin commends local officials

Spring is a crucial time of year for village municipalities and school districts that are in the process of adopting budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. Board members, department heads, mayors and superintendents strive to maintain the services and programs they provide despite the serious cuts they’ve seen in aid and revenues affecting this year’s overall accounts.

The villages of Fayetteville, Manlius and East Syracuse have adopted budgets that hold the line on taxes.

The village of Minoa is implementing a slight increase in its tax levy, as are the proposed budgets at the three public school districts in the eastern suburbs. It’s safe to say many brows have sweated over the last few months toiling over numbers and the Eagle Bulletin commends the hard work that elected officials have put into making these taxing decisions. The consensus in each board has been to protect, not exploit, the taxpayers’ pockets; opting instead to reduce expenditures.

Each entity facing economic challenges this year is sure to feel the pain again as the fiscal forecast predicts even harder times ahead. The Eagle Bulletin encourages residents who are directly affected to keep informed and attend budget workshops and public hearings when scheduled. Speak up in person, by phone or by letter and let the officials you’ve elected hear your concerns as well as constructive ideas when dealing with your dollars.

From the mailbag F-M: Offer German to everyone

To the editor: You have probably received multiple letters from my friends and peers telling you how the German program at our high school has helped them; it got them into college, taught them valuable life lessons, was actually enjoyable, etc.

I am going to offer you a different perspective on the matter. Taking German did not help me. I never learned anything valuable from that class, because I was not given the opportunity to take it. I wanted to take it, but since I was not deemed worthy enough to pursue the class that I wanted to take, based solely on my grade in my seventh-grade English class, I was forced to take a different language.

The problem with schooling is that students are forced to fulfill certain requirements and these requirements are frequently not the same as what the student is actually interested in. By sending me into an easier Spanish class than the German class I wanted to take may have made sense given that they thought that I would do better in that class; but that is a flawed logic.

I’m not going to do better in the easier class; I’m going to do better in a class that can captivate me, that the extra work would not be a burden on me but instead something I could enjoy and take pride in. I did not take German. I took Spanish. I stopped taking Spanish after my junior year, but I was in the afterschool German Club until my graduation.

I realize of course that the general reaction to my argument is; “But Zach, you could’ve taken German, you just needed to get your parents to sign a form that allows you to take a higher level language class despite the teachers recommendation.” This is also a flawed argument. When you’re a 13-year-old and you bring home a letter to your parents that essentially says, “we don’t think your child is intelligent enough to pursue this class,” your parents are going to tell you, “Well the teacher said…” and that’s exactly what my parents told me.

The school board has raised concerns over lack of interested students in the German language; they claim that not enough students will enroll to have the German program be a viable option for a language option.

Well I say to them, stop preventing the students who are

interested from joining.

Cutting German based on a problem that is solely created by the faulty system in place is not the answer. It does not make sense. Instead, simply allow the students who are interested in the class to take in.

[In regards to the Distance Learning for 2011-12] …

The purpose of teaching language to children is so they can use that language to connect to people. They might still be able to learn language through video chatting and computer programs but it still takes away from the purpose of learning it.

School should not just teach students facts and equations, but how to utilize them in everyday life, and how to adapt those skills to be used in situations that do not occur in everyday life. By taking away the ability for these students to learn directly from a teacher, to have a conversation with the teacher outside of the realms of a video chat, the school is taking away some level of their ability to connect to people.

Video chatting may be a cheaper form of education, but they will be receiving what they pay for, and it will be considerably less than a real education that should be a standard I would expect our schools to abide by.

Are childhood vaccinations safe?

To the editor: This year, April 23-30 has been designated National Infant Immunization Week. For most children, getting their shots is simply a right of passage.

However, the near eradication of once common and often deadly diseases has left a number of parents wondering if their children still need to receive their shots and if the perceived risks of vaccinations are worth the benefits?

There are a variety of reasons parents do not have their children vaccinated. Some lack insurance and figure they can not afford to take their child for regular doctor visits. Others have read stories linking vaccinations to autism, and are afraid of risking side effects.

Cultural differences may foster an inherent distrust of vaccinations, and residency status makes some immigrant families fearful of going to the doctor. Whatever See Letters, page 5

One week, Major League Baseball appropriately honors Jackie Robinson with all of its players donning Jackie’s no. 42, a reminder of how the Dodger organization, first in Brooklyn and then in Los Angeles, set the standard for the entire game.

Just a week later, MLB took over the day-to-day operations of the Dodgers. Just to write this line is shocking enough.

How did one of sports’ indelible franchises, an organization accustomed to success, turn so bad so fast? Well, mainly because a family business turned into a business where family (not to mention ego and greed) ruined everything.

For half a century, the O’Malley family controlled the Dodgers. Curse old man Walter all you want for ripping the heart out of Brooklyn, but there’s no doubt his move to L.A. helped make baseball a coast-to-coast entity, and better in the long term.

Once in Southern California, O’Malley showed Blackwell everyone what a model organization looks like. The medical community has seen a recent increase in contagious diseases that were once controlled through vaccinations. With modern means of travel, infected individuals can spread a contagious disease across the nation or around the world very quickly. O’Malley, who took over after his father died, kept things simple, left his baseball people alone (unlike some other owners) and didn’t chase every big-dollar star. Then, just as baseball was coming back from its 1994 strike, the O’Malley family got out, selling the Dodgers to Fox….who promptly turned it over to Frank McCourt six years later for $430 million. And every-

thing began to fall apart.

For one thing, the Fox crowd, much like the CBS group that owned the Yankees in the decade before George Steinbrenner took over, saw the Dodgers as just another corporate asset. That neglect led to mediocre results, unacceptable to anyone that bled Dodger Blue.

MPH: Making musical memories White-hot horn player Walter White headlines MPH Jazz Fest Sunday

By Russ Tarby Trumpeter Walter White – who now plays for Dave Matthews’ Manhattan Jazz Orchestra – cherishes memories of performing alongside his hero, Maynard Ferguson, in the early-1990s in the Big Bop Nouveau Band “I’ll never forget standing shoulder to shoulder with him night after night playing ‘The Fox Hunt’ and learning through osmosis, breath for breath,” White remembers.

Someday young brass players like Zain Nizam, Ian Trepanier and Francesco Giannini will similarly recall the day they played a concert with Walter White.

The three Manlius Pebble Hill High School musicians will be among two dozen students showcasing their talents in the eighth annual MPH Jazz Fest headlined by the Walter White trio at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the school’s Coville Theater, 5300 Jamesville Road in DeWitt. Tickets cost $25 and $15 for students; 446-2452.

White, who now lives in Ithaca, has plenty of professional experience to share with the MPH musicians.

With Ferguson – who died in 2006 – White was featured on the CD, “Live from London,” playing “The Fox Hunt,” a sizzling duet with the Boss. As lead trumpeter for Dave Matthews’ Manhattan Jazz Orchestra, he now regularly tours Japan. White’s horn playing has enlivened the soundtracks of movies and television shows such as “Taxi,” and “The Cosby Show.” As a recording studio owner, he produces music for records,

television and film.

At the MPH Jazz Fest White will be accompanied by keyboardist Dino Losito and drummer Tom Killian.

Losito, a pianist since age 4, is one of the most sought-after accompanists in Upstate NY, often working with artists such as Nancy Kelly, Danny D’Imperio and Houston Person. Killian directs bands at Corning Free Academy and often hits the skins for the Salt City Jazz Collective.

Among the tune White is likely to perform are “Stella by Starlight,” “Cantaloupe Island,” “My Foolish Heart” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Opening for the White Trio on Sunday will be the MPH Jazz Lab Band and The Oh Man! Band. Conducted by MPH instrumental music instructor Joe Colombo, the Jazz Lab Band features vocalist Jamie Jo on tunes such as Fats Waller’s “Honeysuckle Rose.” Jo will also sing with the Oh Man Band, a quintet led by pianist Parker McQueeney. Oh Man’s set list includes a McQueeney composition named “Mathilde.”

Following this year’s MPH Jazz Fest, the school is introducing a new event – an art invitational. The exhibit and sale features the work of 12 Central New York artists. The public is invited to the opening reception at 5 p.m. Sunday, at the Solomon Gallery.

The artists include Pam Steele, Jacqueline Adamo, Amber Blanding, Amy Fancer, Sharon Bottle Souva, Sue Canizares, John Fitzsimmons, Jeanne Holstein, Aaron Jacobson, Linda McGinley, Mary Padgett, and Misse Thomas. Their works range from paintings, photographs, ceramics, and wall quilts to blown glass, metallic constructions, mosaics and mixed-media pieces. The art exhibit and sale continues through May 6.

and crowded city streets. First-time Fresh Air children are between the ages of six and 12. Many families find their hosting experiences so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all children are re-invited to stay with the same host families, year after year.

Kirkville contractor creates lasting impressions

Based in Kirkville in the town of Manlius, Jeff Haines began his own business in 1997. He graduated in 1991 from SUNY Delhi with a degree in carpentry, and then worked as an employee for two reputable area contractors to gain experience.

Haines’ wife Tina acts as legal partner at Haines & Haines.

“We have a great deal of client base in Skaneateles, Manlius and Fayetteville, as well as Brewerton and Cazenovia,” he said, adding most of his work comes through word of mouth. “I advertised a couple times when I first started. Since then, all my business has been referral.” With the exception of 2009, when the economy took a sharp fall, Haines has never had to look for work.

The general contractor offers a wide range of services, and at one time built a brand new house. Ideally, however, Haines said his passion is building up a kitchen or bathroom to his clients’ wishes.

“A lot of times, when I meet a customer, say, for a kitchen, they already have an idea of what they want it to look like but they need guidance on coordinating the materials to come together,” he said. “What I think is neat is we can sit at someone’s table in their old, outdated kitchen and make sketches on a piece of paper ... take it from the very beginning idea stage and help them all the way through the project until the day we put the last knob on the last cabinet door.”

Popular features today include granite and solid surface countertops, he said, as well as tile backsplash, stained wood and painted cabinets. “We help coordinate the cabinetry and the countertops, the sinks and the faucets to get the whole job done,” Haines said.

Haines & Haines projects vary in size and can take up to three weeks or two months to complete. On average, he contracts about five major projects and numerous smaller jobs on a yearly basis.

“People have scaled back their projects [since the economic downturn],” he said.

“They’re still improving their homes but they’re being much more budget conscious now, ‘Will they get that investment back if they sell? Can they take the money out of investments and not affect their retirement?’” Haines said he often consults with his clients about their potential concerns.

In addition to his full-time career in carpentry, Haines is an active member of the Fayetteville United Methodist Church on East Genesee Street. Through his church

Gage earns award, grant The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation received a Certificate of Commendation from the Museum Association of New York for its innovative “Come Write on Our Walls” campaign.

East Syracuse Village Board adopts budget The East Syracuse Village Board passed its 2011-12 budget April 18 with no tax increase for the fourth consecutive year.

“Considering we started out this process with an $800,000 shortfall, to pass a budget without a tax increase clearly is a victory for village taxpayers,” said Mayor Danny Liedka, who

is now serving his second term. “We didn’t look at the hand we were dealt as an excuse to raise taxes. We instead chose to dig in and continue our efforts to streamline our operations.

“No tax increase. A 2-percent raise for our deserving village employees. No service cuts. This shows what hardnosed budgeting can do, even in a time of severe fiscal stress

on local governments,” he added. “I applaud my colleagues on the board for working with me to produce a budget that puts taxpayers first.”

East Syracuse’s budget is $4,966,571, which is 5 percent less than last year. Overall spending is down $602,562 over the last four years.

in to a random home game and you can still hear Vin Scully at the microphone, 60 years after he started in Brooklyn, spinning a tale better than any announcer half his age.

Maybe Scully will last long enough to see his beloved Dodgers find a real owner and a real purpose again. For now, though, a treasured baseball asset resides under MLB’s protection, a ghostly shadow of the blue and regal presence they once held.

Random Thoughts From page 5 rowed, (2), he spent a lot on himself instead of the Dodgers and (3) he got involved in an ugly and public divorce where, again, the Dodgers were little more than an asset getting knocked around in the courts.

It only figured that, weeks before MLB took over, there was the ugly incident on Opening Night where Brian Stow, a San Francisco Giants fan, was beaten into a coma by Dodger fans, earning the team nationwide scorn because it didn’t employ a head of security. Somehow, McCourt had his son on the payroll, but not someone to keep fans safe.

No wonder Bud Selig got fed up. He’s got two messes to consider, both of them involving the National League franchises from the nation’s two largest cities. Aside from the Dodger drama, there’s the Mets’ situation, with the Wilpon family desperately seeking partners in the wake of getting cleaned out in the Bernie Madoff saga.

As those dramas linger, their American League counterparts continue to clean up. Artie Moreno’s Angels in Anaheim are miles ahead of the Dodgers now, with big crowds, affordable beer and winning most of the time. And it’s even more lopsided in New York, where the Steinbrenner family, love them or loathe them (and there’s no in between), swim

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,” relax and enjoy being outdoors. Joan Teachout, 80, of Mattydale, died Friday April 22, 2011, at Crouse Hospital with her family surrounding her. Joan was a native of Syracuse who resided in East Syracuse for several years before moving to Garden City Drive in Mattydale in 1963. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Dorothy (Thompson) Sabourin.

Joan retired from General Electric after 10 years as an inspector in the television division; prior to that, she had worked at Syracuse China. Joan was an avid bingo player at the VFW in Mattydale.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rob-

Lacrosse Red Rams beat West Genny, 5-3

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com All the indicators were working against the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team going into last Saturday’s much-anticipated showdown with West Genesee.

Star sophomore Jordan Evans was wondering if a knee injury would jeopardize his season. Poor field conditions caused the game to be moved from the Red Rams’ home field across town to the Wildcats’ turf. Even the bus to the game caused the team to show up more than half an hour late.

None of this bothered J-D, though, when they finally did make it to Camillus. Evans played and made big early

contributions, and the defense did the rest as the defending state Class B champion Red Rams knocked off the Wildcats 5-3 to extend its win streak to 28 games.

Just the day before, Evans received another examination on his right knee. Originally diagnosed as a partially torn ACL, it was now revaled to be just some swelling, not enough to keep Evans off the field for West Genesee.

Glad for the chance to challenge Pat Brown, John Sabert and the rest of the Wildcats’ imposing defense, Evans broke through for a pair of goals in the first half, keying the Rams’ ascension to a 4-1 lead.

Now it was J-D’s back line that would seize the spotlight. Matt Firman, Scott Firman and Davi Sacco,

along with long sticks Matt Kopp and Russell Runions, anchored a man-to-man defense that frustrated WG’s top players everywhere they tried to go.

In fact, Corey Herrington, Cody Hoose and Tim Barber, a trio that combined for 51 goals and 56 assists so far this season, had zero points between them on this day, and leading scorer Dylan Donahue got shut out after the first quarter. Dan DiStefano stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.

Tim Edwards, Alex Hatem and McLaren Brady would account for J-D’s other goals, with Steven Aziz accounting for a pair of assists. This was the second time in as many weeks that J-D had knocked off a Class A power, having beaten Fairport 8-4 on April 16.

J-D baseball rebounds with pair of wins

Max Bregande delivered a strong effort on the mound, going six innings for the win as he earned seven strikeouts against three walks allowed.

A pair of three-run rallies – one in the first in-

ning, then another in the third – got J-D rolling, and it tacked on a five-run fifth inning for further cushion.

Chris Lenish had a home run and two RBIs as Matt Yonta also drove in two runs. Eric Thompson, Mason Schoeneck and Paul Fitzgibbons also drove in runs as Thompson, Lenish, Dan Canfield and Tyler Kirwan each scored twice.

Another fine pitching effort came a day later, against Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, where Justin Marzella stepped up and shut down the Red Devils

Through his seven innings on the mound, Marzella amassed 10 strikeouts, allowing four hits and two walks, and kept VVS off the board until the seventh inning.

J-D only had five hits, but got to Red Devils pitcher Josh Webb for two runs in the fifth inning to break a 0-0 tie, tacking on another run in the sixth. Lenish had a double and RBI, while Canfield managed two hits. Kirwan, Matt Yonta and Jimmy Sinopoli scored the runs.
