“Dasher’s Magical Gift,” CNY Arts’ original holiday ballet, will present its seventh annual production during two matinee performances on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the OnCenter Crouse Hinds Theater in Syracuse. The show was created for CNY Arts by nationally recognized theater and dance professionals who live and work in the Syracuse area. This year’s show, performed by students of Dance Centre North, continues a 44-year tradition of affordable, accessible arts and family-focused holiday programming for the surrounding communities.

“It’s exciting to continue this annual holiday program, as we have for over four decades,” said Carol Dumka, former CNY Arts Board president. “It’s our promise to Central New York to provide a quality, touching story as moving as anything seen on stage or television. It’s entertaining for both children and parents. The dancing, exciting visuals, and message of sharing and giving can be reflected on through conversations in school classrooms or around the dinner table,” she added.
This year, local talent includes Connie Zhang of Jamesville, 17, as Dasher; Eve Oakes of DeWitt, 14, as Spirit of Christmas; Kayla Frament of Camillus, 11, as Sir Ralph Elf; Abby Carello of DeWitt, 14, as Peppermint; Aubrey Powell of North Syracuse, 15, as Wiggles the Penguin; and Jillian Coppernoll of Clay, 16, as Wobbles the Penguin.
“We are so excited that Dasher’s Magical Gift returns Live to the Civic Center on Saturday, Dec. 10,” said CNY Arts Executive Director Stephen Butler. “This show is a wonderful family tradition for parents, their children, and extended families to experience holiday-themed dance, music, and theater at the most affordable price in town. After the show, we hope our audiences head down the block to see the Christmas tree in Clinton Square, all the downtown lights and decorations, and then grab a bite to eat!”
“Dasher’s Magical Gift” was written for CNY Arts by Matt Chiorini, professor at the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Le Moyne College and a published playwright, whose work has been performed around the United States. The show is directed and choreographed by Larry Crabtree, a faculty member at Dance Centre North, and formerly Adjunct Professor of Dance at Le Moyne College and Syracuse University. The dancers are costumed by Lindsey Quay Sikes, Professor of Practice Costume at Le Moyne College. Additional costumes were created by Catherine Kingsley, an international costume designer, actress, model, and dancer. Original lighting design is by John Czajkowski, Technical Director at Le Moyne College.
The hour-long, narrated ballet features a lively cast of characters, some well-known, such as Dasher, and some new, such as the reindeer Peppermint, Sir Ralph Elf, and two slightly confused penguins. The costumes and sets are designed to be upbeat and magical, and there are several surprises to enthrall children. For the first time ever, in collaboration with WCNY, Dasher’s Magical Gift will be filmed live to offer access to schools from out-ofarea districts.
Dance Centre North’s middle and high school-age dancers will continue their tradition of performing CNY Arts’ holiday production. The Syracuse area dance school – under the direction of Cathy Napolitano Mucci – has been teaching classical ballet, as well as other dance forms, and is celebrating their 35th anniversary.

“I’m sure they will generate a lot of [public] interest,” said Wheeler.
The mayor told the board that rather than submit separate demolition and redevelopment applications to the village, the Silberbergs might hold off and submit a single application to be reviewed by the HPC and the planning board.
“Instead of going through two processes, [they’ll] wait and combine it all into one,” he said.
According to Wheeler, the developer is waiting to find out about two potential grant streams before submitting their application to the village. He explained that the outcome of those grant applications will impact the developer’s finances for the project and therefore its scale.
“If he gets the grant, it’s going to be a broader, more complex plan; if he doesn’t, it will maybe be a more scaledback, streamlined version, but either way he has committed to redeveloping the parcel,” said Wheeler.
The mayor concluded by stating that news regarding the grants is expected to arrive in the next week or two.

Each year, CPF’s out-and-back Turkey Trot 5K course starts at Clark Street and travels along a gravel-converted rail trail. A one-mile fun run course is also marked.
According to CPF Executive Director Jen Wong, proceeds from the race go to supporting CPF’s ongoing stewardship of its properties and 13 miles of public access four-season trails.
CPF also accepts non-perishable food donations at the event for CazCares food pantry and clothing closet.
Sponsored by Baird & Muffy Hansen, Cazenovia Lumber & Oil, Wegmans, and Dunkin’, this year’s Turkey Trot drew a combined total of 197 participants in the 5K run/walk and one-mile fun run.

In the women’s race, Olivia McGranaghan finished first followed by Kathryn Arbegast in second and Abbey Nyland in third.

The board rescheduled its next regular monthly meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. to avoid the observed holiday on Monday, Jan. 2.
During her report, Trustee Cindy Bell informed the board that the Lakeland Park wall construction has stopped for the winter and work will resume on the canal wall in the spring.
Public Works Administrator Bill Carr added that the front wall and diving board will be open for swimming next summer. He also stated that the cofferdam will remain in place over the winter.
Cofferdams are enclosures built within a body of water to allow the enclosed area to be pumped out to create a dry working environment.

During the awards ceremony, CPF dedicated a new Gorge Trail kiosk.
According to Wong, the organization has worked to replace several of its trail kiosks this season. The new design was prepared by Teitsch Kent Fay Architects, P.C. and the construction was completed by volunteers Ken Reger, George Belton, and Ken Edkins, with installation assistance from Jon Kogut of Spruce Ridge Landscape and CPF staff and board volunteers.
Earlier this summer, CPF received a gift from Andrew and Lauren Bennett in memory of their parents. A portion of the gift was directed to the sponsorship of the new Gorge Trail kiosk in honor of their mother, Barb Settel, who was a regular walker on the trail before her passing in April 2021.
The Bennetts crafted the language for the dedication, which reads:
“This kiosk is sponsored by Andrew and Lauren Bennett in loving memory of Barbara Settel. Barb cherished these very trails you walk today. In any season, no matter the weather, she enjoyed the five-mile round trip trek on the Gorge Trail. Her passion for the outdoors, and her adventurous spirit had no bounds. The Barb Settel sign will go up on the Gorge Trail at the Clark Street kiosk once the remaining kiosk signage gets back from the printer.
The kiosks at the Willow Patch, Carpenter’s Pond, Burlingame Road, and the connector trail from Lorenzo/ Meier’s Creek to Fairchild Hill were also replaced.
The remainder of the Bennett’s memorial gift will be put towards trail improvements planned for the Gorge Trail Gateway, the entrance to the trail system at Albany Street near the Buyea’s parking area.
“CPF has partnered with Mr. Earl Buyea Sr., the owner of the property at the Gorge Trail Gateway, to develop a plan for trail access and amenity improvements at this important location in the village,” said Wong.
