McLaughlins continue the tradition at Marty’s Barn Cellar Mike McLaughlin has returned to his roots, in a way, according to his wife. When he took a buyout from New Process Gear, he didn’t really have a plan for where he would go to work, or what he would do next. Little did he know that he would revisit his past, and that past would lead him to his future. Before working at New Process Gear, McLaughlin worked for Dennis Hemming at Marty’s Barn Cellar for about two decades. Turns out, he wasn’t done with his time at Marty’s Barn Cellar. In fact, he ended up taking it over. McLaughlin and his wife, Colleen, made the decision to buy Marty’s Barn Cellar, the well-known unfinished furniture store in Elbridge, from Hemming and his wife, Carolyn. The business, started in 1974 by the Hemmings, was well-known by McLaughlin, and the Hemmings became like family. Colleen McLaughlin said Mike

Claire and Carol Watson are the mother-daughter creative force responsible for the unique collection of plants, garden art, gardening supplies, classes and events at Carol Watson Greenhouse (2980 Sentinel Heights Road, LaFayette). Carol’s enthusiasm for retail excellence and her expertise in buying, design and innovative display are complemented by Claire’s patient nurturing and constant, careful attention that coax the tiniest of seedlings to develop strong and healthy root systems, enabling her plants to produce vigorously all season. Claire is a masterful gardener skilled at finding and growing unusual, interesting plants that will succeed in your gardens and containers. Her artistry is evident in the spectacular, easy-to-care-for combination containers planted for customers in early spring. Vegetable and herb garden containers are also a house specialty. Carol selects quality trees, shrubs, perennials and tropicals from top growers. She then intersperses an eclectic mix of consignment pieces from a broad range of local artists among the plants for a rich visual feast both indoors and outdoors. Carol’s “We Plan – You Plant program helps homeowners establish new plantings and refresh existing landscaping. Homeowners call Carol any time of the year to arrange a meeting at the greenhouse. At the greenhouse Carol reviews photos and measurements of the project area and discusses site conditions and homeowner style preferences. After the meeting Carol develops a sketch plan and, when weather permits, greenhouse staff help homeowners select plants and explain planting instructions and care tips. Carol Watson Greenhouse is known for providing exceptional customer service. The knowledgeable, long-term greenhouse staff members are considered family by Claire and Carol, and the Watsons also consider greenhouse customers part of their extended family. Timber Banks — Central New York’s newest lifestyle A Nicklaus Design 18 hole Championship golf course, 65 slip marina, more than two miles of walking trails and all on 886 acres right on the Seneca River — sound too good to be true? Located just on the outskirts of Baldwinsville, Timber Banks is a community full of unparalleled amenities. The golf club at Timber Banks has already made a name for itself as one of the finest semi-private facilities in New York State. On a national level, Timber Banks was ranked by Golfweek Magazine as one of the 15 best new courses in the country in 2011. General Manager Perry Noun III said it was a great accomplishment. “We knew what we had when it was built. The challenge for us was to have our level of service match the quality of the golf course. I can confidently say that we have done just that!” The golf course speaks for itself once

you see it, but what sets Timber Banks apart even further is the practice facility. “Tour quality,” said playing professional at Timber Banks Jim Roy. Director of instruction Kevin Savage said, “The best in the state.” With seven target greens on the range, two fairway bunkers, a short game area and the largest putting green in the section, the Timber Banks practice facility has it all. Noun III said, “We have the facilities here to make you a better player and our Golf Academy can help take you to the next level.” New for Timber Banks this year is the opening of their 65 slip marina. Owner and developer Gary Pooler said, “Now everyone can experience the lifestyle that I have envisioned for years. I am very proud of what Timber Banks has become.” The 65 slip marina has two docks with slips open for the 2012 season and the grand open-

ing coming in spring of 2013. The Timber Banks community is expanding, just like all of their amenities. With the sales thus far in 2012, there are plans in motion to take the real estate to the next level. “It is exciting to see the new homes going up. We are all feeding off each other, The apartments are full, golf course is busy and homes are selling,” said Noun III. “The momentum continues to build for us and we are all ready for a great summer.” The excitement that surrounds Timber Banks can be felt as soon as you drive in

from River Road. The model homes are open, families are walking on the trails, golfers are enjoying the great weather and now, boats are cruising by. Timber Banks is more than a golf and marina community — it is a lifestyle unmatched anywhere in Upstate New York.

I can’t wait to visit this year’s Parade of Homes at Riverwalk to discover what colors are hot right now and see what new decorating ideas are out there that can help to inspire me in my own home.

Time Warner will present the 2012 Parade of Homes Sept. 8 through 23 at Riverwalk in Brewerton, town of Clay. Imagine yourself living in the home of your dreams, bordered by streams, ponds and natural wooded areas. This year, homes built by eight Central New York builders offer a unique opportunity to take advantage of unlimited recreational activities in your own backyard. Since I have been to every one of the Parade of Homes for the last decade or so, I know what to expect on the outside – beautifully manicured lawns, a nice path leading up to the front door and siding done in soothing colors and crisp lines. Inside the homes, however, I never know what to expect. True, most of the models will have wide open spaces, a fireplace of some sort and family-friendly eating areas, living rooms and finished basements. Floor plans will vary, but always with the idea of having a clear, airy flow throughout the home. But the décor… Many of these homes’ interiors have been designed with amazing flair by local firms. Vibrantly-colored walls are paired with accents not only create a backdrop for family living, but a mood as well – with kitchens that can range from ultra chic to country French, living rooms that evoke relaxation as well as conversation and bedrooms suitable for each member of the family. It is in these rooms that I find inspiration. For instance, I recall one year there was a room with a balloon motif, where small versions of hot air balloons were suspended from the ceiling. I thought taking the décor into a 3-D application was a great notion. That room gave me the idea to hang pennants along a string in my son’s sports-themed bedroom, as well as a manysided metal star from the ceiling in my bedroom. A bathroom at a Parade of Homes a few years back had a nautical theme, with bright blues and crisp whites used as a background for surfboard and seashell art. I

By Jennifer Wing Zerodraft offers a variety of energy saving services for all types of residential and commercial structures, from keeping homes safe and comfortable to increasing the indoor air quality in schools, health care facilities and office buildings. Zerodraft takes a “whole building approach by decreasing customers’ energy costs and consumption, increasing energy efficiency, cutting wasteful spending and maximizing productivity and comfort. Chief Operating Officer Mike Borek called Zerodraft’s approach when it comes to home performance “relatively new and sometimes misunderstood by homeowners. Using the house-as-asystem approach, Zerodraft conducts a comprehensive whole-house assessment that goes beyond a traditional audit to establish performance levels in the home while getting to the bottom of any problems. Using the detailed assessment results, Zerodraft can prescribe and prioritize stateof-the-art solutions based on proven building science. Borek said Zerodraft makes sure to keep the customer informed during the entire process. “We focus on education and awareness, Borek said. “We work together with the homeowner to optimize energy efficiency, comfort and health safety. Those all need to be integrated in order to ensure that the improvements are done in the most costeffective, efficient and safe manner. He used the example of the homeowner who might unknowingly have high levels of carbon monoxide when they decide it is time to airseal gaps in their home in order to save energy. “On the one hand, airsealing is a good thing because it will save money, but on the other, the elevated carbon monoxide levels, which may have originally been reduced by passing through existing

A blower door test is conducted during an energy audit. cracks, are now trapped in the home. We look at the big picture – the HVAC, insulation, windows, all of it, when we assess a project. If the owner were to have a general contractor come in to do the sealing of the house, they might not catch the leak, creating an unsafe environment. Borek said Zerodraft, along with trying to share the concept of the “whole house approach with Upstate New York through its Syracuse, Buffalo and Albany locations, is also trying to make it easier for the customer to afford needed improvements. ‘We are educating people about the programs that are out there to help them do these projects in the most economical way, he said. “There is the Home Performance with Energy Star program that includes rebates and grants depending upon income to help people finance the improvements. We customize comfort and energy solutions and properly align them with the most cost effective financing programs. Borek said Zerodraft was one of the first companies in New York to get projects set up through NYSERDA’s On Utility Bill Financing Plan. “We determine what the savings per month the customer will realize on their utility bill based upon a prioritized list of energy improvements – a $100 per month reduction or $1,200 a year over five years equals a total savings of $6,000, Borek said. “The customer can then get financed for a $6,000 energy reduction project with the idea that the

loan payment for the project will be offset by the savings from their utility bill. Borek said Zerodraft is currently involved in a Home Relief Project of education and goodwill, where until July 18 individuals can write a letter about someone who is having a difficult time financially whose home is not energy efficient, recommending that that person should receive up to $3,500 of services – free of charge. “We will select a few of the nominees and do the complimentary work on a couple of homes in our coverage area, Borek said. “It is a way we can help out while continuing our education of Upstate New York.

When Central New York residents think of laundromats, only one name comes to mind. Established by father-son team Jerry and Tim O’Connell in 1983, Colonial Laundromats grew auspiciously from a laundry equipment distribution business into, 29 years later, Central New York’s number one laundromat. Tim O’Connell says the main difference between his laundromats and the competition is cleanliness. “Laundromats don’t necessarily have the best image, said O’Connell. “We put cleanliness and safety above all else in our laundromats. All Colonial Laundromats are well-lit, safe and open 24 hours a day to meet the needs of their customers. An attendant is almost always on duty, primarily to keep the store clean, but also to answer questions and be helpful. “Our employees won’t do your laundry, but they’re very friendly and willing to assist with any questions you might have, O’Connell said. Colonial Laundromats are becoming popular with people who want to save money on their water, gas and electric bills. “People do eight, nine, ten loads at home and it takes all day, said O’Connell. “Now they come here, use our 75-pound capacity washers that are environmentally friendly and get all their laundry done in an hour. And look at the savings on their water, gas and electric bills. A top loader at home, with 20-pound capacity, will use 28 gallons of water; Colonials uses 24 gallons for the whole cycle, and that’s good for the environment. More and more people are thinking like that. Come here, and for $10 you can do a lot of laundry. We have more and more men coming in and helping with the family laundry. They like to get it done fast – and they can do that with these large capacity washers. Colonial Laundromats are located within a 90-mile radius in the Syracuse area, with 33 different locations. Its newest addition is in Gouveneur – open 24 hours a day. About 55 different self-serve washers are available at each location. Sizes range from standard front-loader machines to 35, 55 and monster 75-pound washing machines to meet any laundry challenge you may have. Prices range from $2.50 to $4.50 to $7.50 for the 75-pound machine, ideal for comforters and quilts. Need something to keep you entertained while you wait? Colonial has you covered with a wide range of newspapers and other reading materials, a better alternative than watching your whites endure

My favorite thing was working with the customers. It is that experience that has helped her in her many roles at Carter Upholstery, from managing and scheduling appointments to organizing sales, setup and delivery. “I think what is most important is that we connect so well with the customers and are able to relate to them, Cathy said. “They tell us what they need and we are able to fulfill that need. have a table and chairs in your kitchen remove that too; it may be hard for you to envision your kitchen with a contemporary feel if you have a country table in that space. Give your cabinets a good cleaning touch up any little scratches. Now you’re ready to start. It may be that all you need is a new paint color on the walls, new accessories and accents. You’ll be surprised what a huge difference this can make, for a relatively small investment of time and money. Maybe you want to change the knobs and pulls on your cabinets; this can have a big impact on the style of your kitchen. This simple change can take a kitchen from country to traditional or modern in about two hours. The biggest thing to remember here is that the center line holes for the pulls have to be the exact same size as the existing pulls. Add a backsplash! There are a lot of options for backslashes and you can really get creative here. There are some peel and stick options that are really nice, and simple. To learn how to add a traditional tile backsplash, you can get a how-to CD at a home improvement center or your local library and make quick work of this in a weekend. What about molding? Crown molding and/or under cabinet molding can bring a finishing touch to your kitchen if you have enough space over and/or under the cabinets. You can pick up molding at most home improvement centers or a lumber yard and stain it or paint it to match your cabinet. Depending on your skill level, you may want to bring in a pro to install molding. It can be a bit tricky and mistakes can be costly. New light fixtures can make a huge statement and can be done with a medium skill level. If you don’t feel comfortable enough to tackle this yourself, you probably know someone who is willing to help out. The above options are things just about any skill level or budget can handle. And of course there are many other options that can be considered in updating your kitchen, such as painting the cabinets and replacing the counter tops and the flooring, but each of these options require a professional or higher skill level than the options above, and they have their own options and considerations that should be discussed further. Do you really want to put $5,000 counter tops on cabinets that are coming to the end of there life expectancy?

at Marty’s Barn Cellar until 2001, when he left to take a job at New Process Gear. It was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, he said, but it was still difficult to leave the job he had held for so many years. Fast forward about eight years to a phone call he received from Hemming after he took the buyout. It turned out that two of Hemming’s employees needed some personal time off, so he needed someone to mind the store for a little while. From there, the two men started talking and struck a deal, as Hemming was ready to retire. And so, the tradition continues at Marty’s Barn Cellar, with the McLaughlins at the helm. With a fresh perspective on the business, the couple made cosmetic improvements to bring the building up-to-date and make the shopping experience even more appealing to customers. The store is located at Route 5 and Kingston Road in Elbridge. For more information call 689-9927 or visit martysbarncellar.com.
