PEACE Inc., located in Nobles Plaza in Baldwinsville, held the Easter giveaway last Thursday. “A lot of people can’t afford food for Easter and this provides a nice dinner,” Manor said. Brown paper bags, decorated by Elden Elementary students in the fourth grade and kindergartners in Mrs. Froehlich’s class at the school, were given to clients full of items ranging from oatmeal, canned goods and paper products to turkeys, hams and Easter candy. Donations for the giveaway came from PEACE and the greater Baldwinsville community including hams from Word of Life Church.
The Baldwinsville Police Department will hold a community graffiti cleanup from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday April 30 to coincide with the planned Earth Day cleanups in the village of Baldwinsville. Focusing on the downtown corridor, the department and volunteers will clean off or paint over unsightly damage caused by vandals. Once complete, local merchants and residents are asked to become more vigilant in observing and reporting suspicious behavior and any new graffiti that appears, said Police Chief Michael Lefancheck. “This increased publicity of the problem of graffiti will inevitably enhance our visitor’s downtown experience and better identify the responsible individuals for future prosecution,” he added. Baldwinsville administrators agree to wage freeze By Kelly Cary, BCSD Baldwinsville Central School District (BCSD) administrators, consisting of the district’s principals, assistant principals and directors, assistant superintendents of management services, human resources and instruction, and the superintendent of schools, have agreed to a wage freeze for the 2011-12 school year saving
the district nearly $94,000 for the fiscal year. “The district’s number one goal is to continue providing students with quality programs and instruction, balancing students’ needs with the financial ability of the community to support those needs,” said Superintendent Jeanne Dangle. On April 11, the BCSD Board of Education adopted its proposed budget, which is

Memorial Day proclamation
BPD encourages crime prevention
Mayor proposes walking initiative In an effort to stay fit and utilize the miles of new sidewalks in the village of Baldwinsville, Mayor Joseph Saraceni has proposed a walking and running initiative for village residents. With an anticipated start date of June 1, the 15-week program would encourage participants to walk the village streets and, if the program takes off as Saraceni hopes, log the miles walked online through the village’s website (Baldwinsville.org) to reach individual goals. “We’ve got great sidewalks,� Saraceni said. “[With this program], we can improve fitness and have some fun.� As goals are attained, residents would be recognized with T-shirts. To cover costs, the mayor plans to ask local businesses to sponsor the program, which could prove beneficial to local commerce as more people would be navigating the business
The monthly meetings of the Plainville Fire District Board of Commissioners will be held at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month at the schoolhouse in Plainville.
Arbor Day planting At 1 p.m. this Friday (April 29), the Baldwinsville Department of Public Works will plant two maples at 5 and 7 Canton St. in recognition of Arbor Day. Having been named a Tree City USA for the 25th consecutive year, the village demonstrates its commitment to trees through annual plantings such as these. Public hearing A public hearing regarding revisions to the village code, specifically penalties, property maintenance, building and construction and dumping and storage, will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 5 at the village hall, 16 West Genesee St. in Baldwinsville. Byrne Dairy to move Byrne Dairy representatives are in the process of getting site plan approval from the village board for a proposed store at 85 East Genesee St., which is the former site of Wacky Wyatt’s. Unlike the existing store on Route 370 in the village, which offers Byrne Dairy grocery alone, the new location would offer a fuel station, bakery (Shelby Donuts) and deli (Byrnsie Foods), in addition to the grocery. Village officials are waiting to hear from the county planning board before making a decision.

The Baldwinsville Police Department plans to implement a new program this summer that would encourage residents to lock vehicle doors. Under the supervision of department officers, police explorers (youth interested in public safety) will check vehicle doors in predetermined areas to ensure they are locked. The explorers will also leave cards on checked vehicles either thanking residents for locking their doors and preventing crime or encouraging residents to lock up in the future. According to Police Chief Michael Lefancheck, this is all in an effort to prevent crime. “I think proactive programs like this are great,� said Trustee Bruce Stebbins. “[This is an] excellent step to staying away from situations we’d rather not experience.�

Support your library Library officials have proposed a $1,463,180 budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year. For homes with $100,000 assessments in Lysander, Van Buren and Clay, it is anticipated that the total Baldwinsville Public Library tax bill for 2011-12 will be $60.33, a projected increase of 62 cents over last year’s total bill. The total cost to taxpayers would be 16.5 cents per day, again based on a home with a market value of $100,000. Considering the growing demand for library services and materials (circulation of materials has increased 18 percent in the past three years and items checked out increased two percent in 2010), a $60 annual investment for a seemingly unlimited amount of resources – books, magazines, DVDs, databases, programs and Internet access, just to name a few – is an incredible deal. The Library Board has also taken steps to pursue grants to expand the existing resources. A new public computing center, funded through federal stimulus funds, is now available within the library with a range of services and programs for job seekers, small business owners and senior citizens. The budget vote and trustee election (five candidates are running for one seat and two incumbents are running unopposed) will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday April 28 in the library. If you are 18 years of age or older, a United States citizen and have lived in the Baldwinsville Central School District for at least 30 days prior to April 28, then get to the library and cast your vote. And, if you haven’t done so already, check out what your library has to offer while you are there.

College acceptance options By Maria Badami Spring is finally here and so are the college notification letters. It used to be that a fat letter suggested a student was accepted to a college. A thin envelope implied rejection. This is no longer true. Colleges and universities are hedging their bets by employing new “enrollment management” options including extensive use of wait lists, deferred admissions and guaranteed transfer options. In order to fully appreciate these options, one must first understand that colleges have been overwhelmed with thousands, if not tens of thousands, of applications. This is largely the result of a growing number of institutions (460 colleges and universities) accepting the common application and students submitting many more applications in hopes of getting accepted somewhere. Colleges are challenged with accurate projections of the number of accepted applicants who will ultimately enroll. To hedge their bets, colleges over accept applicants expecting a certain number to select other institutions. Colleges also offer candidates who did not make the first cut place-
ment on wait lists. Generally these offers are accompanied with a letter of intent. Students who do not reply to the letter of intent will automatically be removed from the wait list. I strongly encourage students who have been placed on a wait list at a preferred institution to do more than submit the wait list form. This is their last opportunity to demonstrate interest in an institution. They should write a letter or email, addressed to the person who signed their wait list letter, informing them of their strong interest in the college and updating them on any new information. The tone of the letter should be positive and mature. A letter of support from a school counselor or teacher is appropriate, but students should not overwhelm the admissions office with too much information. They should not call daily or visit the admissions office unannounced. They should not attend the accepted students’ event. This is a sure way to get crossed off a wait list. The practice of guaranteed transfer or deferral is becoming increasingly popular. Taking into account that a certain number of students will drop out after their first semester, transfer to another
institution, study abroad or graduate mid year, colleges are making great efforts to keep every dorm room full by offering students spots at their college at a later semester. Last year, SUNY Geneseo offered 500 students the option of starting in the spring. SUNY Binghamton just offered 600 applicants spots in its freshman dorms, but those students have to enroll in Broome County Community College, becoming eligible for admission to Binghamton in a year or two. Cornell offers some high school seniors the option to transfer with the caveat that they attend another accredited institution and earn at least a 3.3 GPA. Not one of these options is easy. Matriculating later often results in students feeling left out, not creating the strong bonds other freshman have established. Similarly, waiting to get off a wait list may have serious consequences. Students may forfeit expensive college deposits, or prevent themselves from “falling in love” with the college(s) to which they have been admitted. ay Middle School recently held a two-week collection of items for military personnel serving overseas in recognition of their sacrifices for and dedication to the United States. The school’s student council conducted the collection. More than 6,000 items including letters were collected and sent in care packages. When Tammy Williams, a music teacher at the school, asked her students if they would like to write and record songs for a CD for the care packages, they didn’t hesitate to say yes. Williams teaches three periods of music. All three classes loved the idea of creating a class song and the students began researching patriotic songs and stories to sparks ideas for their original songs. The classes composed their songs using JamStudio.com, a free online resource to write and mix music. Every student was involved in some aspect of the song composition including writing lyrics and chords. The project incorporated the music and technology curriculum while

The exhilarating smell of breakfast greeted Baldwinsville Christian Academy (BCA) students Friday April 15 upon entering school, but not everyone would partake in this treat. Mrs. Marnita Neuman, the K4 through K5 teacher at BCA, had a special day planned for her students and their parents – an Easter breakfast celebration. Parents and younger siblings enjoyed eating cinnamon rolls, fresh fruit, bacon, sausage, eggs and chocolate chip pancakes with real maple syrup. Smiles and joy were evident on all that attended. The breakfast was followed by an Easter video. BCA is thankful for teachers who pursue excellence and creative ways of teaching students.

While it was a relief for the Baldwinsville boys lacrosse team to finally have some wins to feel good about, it ran into more tough opposition in the latter part of April. First, the Bees hosted Liverpool last Tuesday afternoon, and played right with the Warriors much of that game – except for one bad stretch that led to a 13-9 loss. Through one period, B’ville was enjoying a 3-1 lead. However, Liverpool, for the only time all afternoon, awakened in the second period, dominating on face-offs and going on a 7-1 tear that lasted all the way to halftime. B’ville, to its credit, stormed back, but could not catch up, even though Luke Evans had a three-goal hat trick and Casey Colligan had two goals and two assists. Austin McAskill, Nick Ciampi, Will Rumble and Kyle Koelsch had the other goals, with Ben Paprocki adding an assist. Parker Ferrigan made 12 saves in the net, but could not keep everything out.. Two days later, B’ville disposed of Utica Proctor 18-1 on Thursday, scoring 10 times in the first quarter alone on its way to its most lopsided win of the season. Heavy rains that fell on Saturday caused a postponement of the game against Fayetteville-Manlius until
this Saturday at 11 a.m., after B’ville visits Penn Yan Tuesday and has a Thursday-night rematch with Liverpool. Those same rains also kept B’ville’s girls team from hosting Cicero-North Syracuse on Saturday, as it returned home from a trip to Maryland that included a 22-11 loss to McDonogh. During the first half, the Bees fell behind 13-3. Katie Sullivan, in defeat, had three goals, while Maggie Monnat and Ashley Gentile both found the net twice. It stopped raining long enough for the Baldwinsville boys tennis team to hit the court last Tuesday afternoon and blank the Henninger Black Knights 6-0. Improving its mark to 4-0, the Bees saw Kevin Pregent and Matt Rothenhoefer each win 6-0, 6-0 matches over, respectively, Nick Saralequi and Mohammed Nagi. Dan Kot added his own sweep over Pedro Ramos 6-0, 6-1. Over in doubles, it was much the same story, as the teams of Alec Funicello-Grady Schmidt, Cody BuckKevin Thompson and Blaine Drake-Jake Jefferey all won in straight sets. Drake and Jefferey beat Jesse Negretto and Arik Schermerhorn 6-0, 6-2. The precipitation postponed last Thursday’s match with Cicero-North Syracuse, with the Bees hoping it stopped before matches this week against Oswego and powerful Fayetteville-Manlius.
B’ville girls track tops West Genesee
Baldwinsville’s girls track and field team improved to 2-0 on the season by going to Camillus last Thursday afternoon and earning a 74-67 victory over West Genesee. In the pivotal 4x100 relay, the Bees’ quartet of Gina Carnovale, Lily VanDevalk, Gabrielle Jordan and Lana Vechiarelli earned an important victory in a time of 53.2 seconds. On her own, Jordan needed 13.3 seconds to prevail in the 100-meter dash, while Carnovale pulled off a top long jump of 15 feet 9 ½ inches. Elsewehre, Cierra Allen impressed in the 400-meter dash, winning in 1:01.7 despite the cold and windy conditions. Sierra Earle added a title in the shot put, tossing it 28 feet 2

Long before April was done, the Baldwinsville baseball team would have a pretty clear idea of where it stood relative to the other main Section III Class AA contender, for it would have played against most of them – if the weather allowed it. That included West Genesee, whom the Bees visited last Monday afternoon. There, one bad inning proved costly in a 4-1 loss to the Wildcats. Fresh off wins over Rome Free Academy and Utica Proctor the week before, B’ville got a jump here when Brett Charbonneau led off the game with a double. Charbonneau went to third on a bunt, then scored on Gabe Levanti’s sacrifice fly.
An unusual mixture of disappointment and pride surrounded the Baldwinsville boys track and field team’s 72-69 defeat to West Genesee last Wednesday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium. True, the Bees had lost the battle of CNY Counties League National division powers – but not without a superb effort that included small bits of history. Shaun Thompson, in particular, stood out. The Duke University-bound senior, on his own, cruised to victory in the mile in four minutes, 44.3 seconds and also took the 3,200-meter run in 9:54.5.
Moving to the 4x800 relay, Thompson, along with Ethan Pacheck, Andrew Fleming and Alec Peinkofer, set a school record with a time of 8:01.2 – and still got beat as WG’s quartet of Billy Gabriel, John DeLallo, Matt Byrnes and Matt Gonnella finished in 8:01 flat. Both that event, and the 4x100 relay, proved important as the Bees lost close races. In the sprint, Antonio Peck, Rudy Sapp, Parker Kiff and Nathan Wicks finished in 45.5 seconds, just behind the Wildcats, who prevailed in 45.3 seconds. Sapp did beat WG’s Kesean Sparks in the 200-meter dash, 23.5 seconds to 23.7, and added a victory in the high jump by clearing 5 feet 6 inches. Pa-

HOW ECCENTRIC ARE YOU? Most people engage in strength training in the standard manner, which involves placing tension on a muscle so that it shortens as it contracts. This “concentric� form of exercise involves performing a bicep curl by slowly flexing the arm, then quickly returning the arm to the outstretched position. “Eccentric� exercise is the opposite. It entails performing a bicep curl with a quick curl of the arm, followed by slow extension of the arm. Physical therapists and trainers are finding that eccentric exercise may have special benefits. Not only does eccentric exercise seem to build more muscle than concentric exercise, it may actually stave off “delayed onset muscle soreness� (DOMS), which is the pain and soreness often felt after strenuous exercise.

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,� relax and enjoy being outdoors. Weekends from May 1 until the end of October are planned around a different theme. The recreation staff provides planned activities seven days a week from June 24 until Labor Day Weekend. A typical day includes flage raising with Yogi Bear, wagon rides,

The students’ artwork, along with that of other Central New York elementary students, is in an exhibit titled “Student Art – Naturally,� which is organized annually by the Central Region of the New York State Art Teachers Association. Margaret Magowan, 92
Cared for over 100 foster children
Margaret Magowan, 92 died April 20, 2011. Born and raised in Kansas, she spent most of her adult life in New York Margaret City, and has lived Magowan in Baldwinsville for seven years. She was a member of University United Methodist Church. In addition to raising her own five children she had a long career as a foster mother, caring for over 100 foster children. She was pre-deceased by her husband Jim, and her sons, David and Doug. She is survived by her children Jim (Ellie), Pat (Neal), Danny (Kirsten), foster children Nick (Elaine), Stephen (Claire), Eva, and Joe, grandchildren Lisa, Laura, Eric, Mary, Lizz, David, Colleen and great-granddaughters Jessica, Kate and Dani. Calling hours: 1 to 4 p.m. Monday April 25 at Gates Funeral Home, 29 W Genesee St., Baldwinsville, with a funeral service at 7 p.m. at University United Methodist Church, 1085 East Genesee St, Syracuse. Burial: Wednesday April 27 at Calverton National Cemetery on Long Island. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Syracuse Home, or University United Methodist Church.

Mary E. (Bennie) Morrison of Baldwinsville received the Lord’s perfect healing and went to heaven on March 15, 2011. She was married to James, her beloved husband of 39 years, who died in 2007. Mary is survived by her daughter Jeri of Arizona; son Donald (Karen) and grandchildren Mallory and Benjamin of Webster, NY, and grandchildren Chad Smith and Laura Jacobson of Oklahoma and her canine companion, Dutchess. Mary was a long time member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Baldwinsville. She worked hard to see that her family’s needs were met, holding various jobs, until she retired from Syracuse Home Association after 15 years as a certified nursing assistant. This beloved mother deeply loved her children and found much joy in her grandchildren. Though she said she had “no talent” she was the Lead Snare in the Baldwinsville Drum and Bugle Corp as a young woman. Later, she enjoyed crocheting lovely afghans, dolls dresses and baby sets. Her family will miss her selfless love and her sense of humor. A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery at 10 a.m. on May 2 followed by a Memorial service at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or the Humane Society of Rochester (Lollypop Farms). Nancy worked at Syracuse Supply for many years, Howe Hardware and most recently with Eagle Comtronics in Liverpool. She enjoyed being with her family, reading and sewing. Nancy was an excellent cook. Nancy was a strong, brave and independent lady who never lost hope or her faith in any situation.
