This September marks the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 attacks on the United States. To honor the memory of those lost in the attacks, the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company (BVFC) has secured a 20-foot steel beam from the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. This beam will be the centerpiece of a 9/11 memorial site planned for the corner of Route 48 and O’Brien Road in Van Buren, next to the Baldwinsville/Lakeside Fire Station No. 2. On Oct. 12, 2010, the request was granted and members of the BVFC, as well as members of the Skaneateles Volunteer Fire Department, retrieved the beam on March 10. While the project was Holbrook’s brainchild, many hands have been involved to bring the memorial to fruition. In an effort to provide better, more efficient services, two fire departments are talking consolidation. Both the Warners and Memphis fire departments, which provide protection to residents in portions of the towns of Van Buren and Camillus, are nearing the end of a two-year discussion, which proposes merging the two departments. “We will be operating with the same structure as before, but will allow the departments to consolidate our resources, which include training, equipment and personnel,” said Warners Fire Department Chief Mike Knowlton, who spoke on behalf of all the officers and members of the Memphis and Warners fire departments. “Warners and Memphis work together already and, by doing this consolidation, we will bring to the area a more unified group to serve the needs of the residents of the fire district.” The proposed consolidation will affect residents located in the present Memphis Fire District in the town of Camillus, specifically Canal Road, Bennetts Corners Road, Bitters Road and Gillie Brook Road. “Consolidation is necessary,” Knowlton said. “As most know, the fire service is getting smaller and, by doing this consolidation, we See Merge, page 8

BVFC hosts firefighter recruitment day By Tom Perkins Come out to the Baldwinsville Fire Station No. 1 at 7911 Crego Road and see what it’s all about. The Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company (BVFC), Inc. will open its doors to area residents so

they can learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community, as part of a statewide program called Recruit NY. Over the last several years, it has been tough for many fire departments throughout New York State to recruit and retain volunteers for

a variety of reasons. Like most fire departments, the BVFC needs to bolster its emergency responder numbers, so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents. Now, more than ever, they need more of their neighbors joining their fire

department. The BVFC is comprised of about 65 active members protecting approximately 28 square miles including the entire village of Baldwinsville and a major part of the towns of Van Buren and Lysander. See Recruitment, page 8

Community News Staff reports Community Wesleyan Church in Baldwinsville invites families to its annual Easter Egg-stravaganza from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday April 23. Kids of all ages, parents and grandparents can enjoy interactive discovery stations that use hands-on participation to share the real story of Easter. Kids can make crafts, have their faces painted, watch a movie, hear an egg-stra special Easter story, enjoy a snack and more at their own pace throughout the morning. An egg hunt will take place just before noon to wrap up the event. “This is one of our favorite annual events at Community Wesleyan,” said coordinator Kim Rice. “It’s totally free and a great way for families to get out and have some fun. But even more important, it’s the perfect time to teach kids about the first Easter when Christ rose from the dead. That’s the best reason to celebrate.” Community Wesleyan Church is at 112 Downer St. in the village of Baldwinsville. Parking is available off Frawley Drive or Ford Street. For more information, call the church office at 638-2222 or 635-3501 or visit the church web site at communitywesleyanchurch.com.

Tenth annual PBJ day By Pastor Joe Folckemer Hillview Community Church celebrated its 10th year of PB&J Sunday Feb. 27 collecting 212 jars of peanut butter and jelly. The church had been collecting donations of peanut butter and jelly for the entire month of February to benefit local food pantries. PB&J Day began 10 years ago as an offshoot of Hillview’s regular collection of food for the pantry. Food pantries often have a short supply of non-perishable proteins such as tuna, peanut butter and even canned potted meat. This was the parish’s way to focus on one area of need and have a little fun at the same time. At the 10 a.m. worship service Feb. 27, everyone was encouraged to bring in their donations, dress in purple and brown and enjoy some peanut butter and jelly-based treats at the coffee hour after worship. Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. at Hillview Community Church, located on O’Brien Pictured counting jars are Nancy Carpenter, left, and Sadie Misner. Road in Baldwinsville. Support fire departments April 10 through 16 marks National Volunteer Week. While there are many opportunities to volunteer in greater Baldwinsville, our local fire departments are facing a shortage of volunteers, which is one of the reasons departments such as Warners and Memphis are looking into operating more efficiently through consolidation and shared services. These efforts aren’t enough, though. More volunteers are needed. Fire departments throughout New York State have had a tough time recruiting and retaining volunteers for a variety of reasons. For one, today’s economy makes it difficult to find the time to volunteer, especially considering many people work two or more jobs, not to mention familial commitments. However, fire departments need to increase emergency responder numbers so they can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for residents. More than ever, they need more of their neighbors joining the fire department, and not just firefighters. According to Warners Fire Department Chief Mike Knowlton, there are many volunteer opportunities offered in the fire department structure. Between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday April 10 at Baldwinsville Fire Station No. 1 (7911 Crego Road in Van Buren), the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company will join in an initiative with volunteer fire departments all across the state to conduct a unified recruitment drive. They will open their doors to area residents to learn about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community. And, once the Warners and Memphis fire departments have merged, these two departments plan to hold a membership drive. Check out what volunteer opportunities these departments have to offer and whether you have the time to lend a hand.

Looking for income? Consider premium bonds As an investor, you want your money to grow so that you can achieve your important goals, such as a comfortable retirement or college for your children. But you may also invest to increase your cash flow. In fact, without a strong cash flow, you may be forced to dip into your growth-oriented investments to pay for shortterm needs, and if you do this repeatedly, you could damage your prospects for attaining your long-term goals. That’s why you’ll want to look at different ways of boosting your cash flow, one of which may be premium bonds. To understand the nature of premium bonds, you’ll first want to be familiar with the relationship between a bond’s price and its interest rate. When a bond is issued, it sells for face (“par”) value, which is the amount returned to the bondholder when the bond matures. This bond also comes with a “coupon” rate, the interest rate that the bond will pay throughout its

Kevin

Wall Financial

focus

lifetime. So, for example, if you paid $10,000 for a 10year bond with a coupon rate of five percent, you would earn $500 per year, every year. If you held the bond until it matured, you’d also get your $10,000 back, provided the issuer doesn’t default. But if market interest rates move up to six percent, and you wanted to sell your five-percent bond before it matures, you’d have to offer it at a discount from the $10,000 face value. Conversely, if market rates were to fall to four percent, you may be able to sell your $10,000 bond for more than its face value, because investors will be willing to pay a premium to earn the higher interest rate. Now, let’s flip the equation, so that instead of

being a bond seller, you’re a buyer. If you want to increase your investment income, you might be interested in a premium bond. You pay a premium for the bond in return for higher interest payments for the life of the bond, and, if you hold it until maturity, you’ll still get the face value back (again barring a default). Furthermore, because premium bonds pay higher interest, they also pay a greater proportion of their cash flow before they mature, in comparison to discounted or “par” bonds. This helps provide for greater price stability, so if interest rates rise or fall, premium bond prices typically will not decrease or increase as much as those of discount or par bonds. Keep in mind that while premium bonds are attractive to you because of their higher interest rate, they are unattractive to bond issuers for the same reason. In fact, when market interest rates fall, some issuers may try to redeem (“call”) these bonds

so that they can issue new ones at the lower rates. Obviously, if your premium bond were to be called, your cash flow might take a hit. That’s why, when investing in premium bonds, you might want to look for those that have at least limited call protection - in other words, they can’t be redeemed for a certain number of years. Your portfolio should comprise a number of different investments designed to work together to meet your long-term financial goals. So give premium bonds some consideration as part of a well-diversified portfolio. Before investing in bonds you should understand the risks involved including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. From the mailbag Kidney Foundation member will be missed

To the editor: Henry “Hank” Santulli, a board member and past President of the National Kidney Foundation of CNY, passed away on March 11 at his home in Florida. Hank was a kidney patient, enduring dialysis treatments and a kidney transplant, all the while serving as the second president of our organization. One of the remarkable things about Hank, despite his illness, was the fact that he was always positive. He often remarked that he actually looked forward to his dialysis treatments as a time when he could be alone to correct papers or write letters without any interruptions. Hank was a remarkable mentor and spent hours talking with newly diagnosed patients, encouraging them to see the bright side of their disease. Many of those he coached didn’t think they would have survived their illness without Hank’s encouragement and sage advice. As we glance at Hank’s photograph, hanging nobly on our Kidney office “Wall of Presidents,” we reflect on all he accomplished for our organization and all those lives that were made better because of him. We will remember his kindness, his generosity of time and spirit, and his sense of humor. The last time I saw Hank was a few years ago at an airport in Florida. He was awaiting the arrival of his daughter, Tracy and his young granddaughter, Samantha. When

he caught sight of Samantha, racing toward him with her tiny arms extended, his face beamed with love and anticipation, and as the young child, screeching with delight, ran into her grandfather’s outstretched arms, it was a moment to remember and a true reflection of the bond they shared...not only with each other but with the entire family as well. Hank will be missed by the entire community. His loss will be felt by all whose path crossed his. Sadly, his loving family will miss him the most, especially his beloved wife, Pat and we can only hope that the wonderful memories they share of their special family love story will lessen their pain just as Hank uplifted the spirits of all who had the privilege to know him. Our hearts go out to the family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. MARION MAKHULI NATIONAL KIDNEY FOUNDATION OF CNY

Students take off with aerospace engineering course

By Kelly Cary, BCSD To prepare students to compete nationally and globally with their peers, the Baldwinsville Central School District offers its students a wide range of programs and services, including the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) engineering program. Baker High School is one of only 251 high schools in New York State offering the PLTW engineering program. PLTW is a national organization and the nation’s leading provider of rigorous and innovative STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. The National Science Foundation has identified STEM-related industries as producing almost 50 percent of the U.S. economic growth in the last 50 years. As baby boomers retire, the workforce will need individuals with STEM-related skills and experience to replace them. The Baldwinsville Central School District offers the PLTW engineering program to provide its students with the skills they will need to pursue postsecondary education and training in STEM-related industries. This year, the district began offering an aerospace engineering class at the high school as part of the PLTW program. The aerospace engineering course was made possible with a grant secured for the district by Assemblyman William Magnarelli. The district has used grant money to purchase necessary equipment, such as a wind tunnel. The course, taught by teacher Christopher Ludden, engages students in engineering design problems. They work on hands-on activities and projects that expose them to situations encountered by aerospace engineers. Students re-

cently tested composite materials with the school’s Structural Stress Analyzer 1000 machine. The machine applied pressure to beams that the students had made from fiberglass fabric, epoxy and foam. They were testing their beams to see at what weight they would begin to bend. “Composite materials are used extensively in aerospace engineering,” Ludden explained. Ludden, who has a degree in aerospace engineering, said the material his students tested is similar to the material used to make airplane wings, and the stress analyzer is a machine similar to one engineers use for testing purposes. The project provided Ludden’s students with real, handson experience in engineering applications.

Earlier in the school year, students worked in groups of two and three and made wings using a 3D printer in the technology department. They tested their wings for wind speed, lift force, drag force and lift over drag in the school’s Jet Stream 500 wind tunnel. Before the end of the school year, each student is required to pass a flight test using a flight simulator on the computer. Several students enjoy the simulator so much they started an after school group to practice their “flying,” and discuss aerospace engineering. “This is what I want to take in college,” said John

Linnenbach, one of the students who started the aerospace club. His classmate Tim Whittles plans to study aerospace engineering as well. “I like this class,” he said. “Mr. Ludden is a great teacher.” Superintendent Jeanne Dangle noted that programs such as PLTW are possible due to community support and dedicated staff members. “Our students’ achievements and the success of our programs are made possible with the support of all district stakeholders,” she said. “Our students are fortunate to live in a community that enables them to explore many opportunities.”

B’ville alum returns to entertain Support KBR with an oil change Once a class-clown at Baldwinsville High School, and 2001’s “Mr. Baldwinsville,” Dan Frigolette is comedy’s valedictorian at the upcoming performance in Syracuse’s Palace Theatre. Plus, he’s assembled a roster of comedians who got their start at rival local high schools to round out this “Homecoming” performance of former natives. Frigolette, who you might remember from his performances in December at CNY Jazz Central, is a 2001 Graduate of Baldwinsville High School and a 2005 Graduate from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. It’s fair to say Frigolette has had a plethora of experiences in Central New York to make him the man he is today. Frigolette moved to New York City in 2005 with an empty car and a full heart. Merge “Each department will keep its existing structure, such as chiefs and department officers, but will be under the district commissioners, who manage the district funds and operating costs for each department, which is what the Warners Fire District does now,” he said. This would give district residents more of a voice in their fire service and protection as commissioners are

elected by residents on an annual basis. While Knowlton said the existing service is very good now, he added the merger could only improve services and make both departments stronger. “With the enthusiasm for the consolidation that has been displayed by all members of both departments, we are excited to be able to fulfill and lead the way for other agencies to

consolidate,” he said. Consolidation discussions have been ongoing since 2009, when the town of Van Buren released a study regarding the town’s fire services. “The proposal came about as a by-product of the town’s fire service study,” said Van Buren Supervisor Claude Sykes. “There had been some low-level discussions before the study, but it became apparent due to the

study that this would be the right thing to do.” Before the merger becomes a reality, a joint public hearing will need to be held between the towns of Van Buren and Camillus. While no date has been set yet, Sykes anticipated the hearing would be set in early May. “This thing could be finalized by June 1,” Sykes said. Once completed, Knowl-

ton said both departments are planning a membership campaign to add to the existing firefighter force. “There are many avenues that are offered in the fire department structure, not just fire fighting,” he said. “So, when you get the notice, read it and contact the appropriate department and become part of your community as all of the members of Memphis and Warners departments are.”

Memorial idea to his coworkers and general manager. Holbrook said the company has since provided incredible support for the project. “An engineer with NuCor Steel, Walt Senenko met with Seamus and I to discuss how best to accomplish completion of this project. Seamus and I explained to Walt what

From page 1 exactly the committee would like to see and he drew it on paper. From there, it became the centerpiece of our Memorial Park,” Holbrook said. Senenko also recruited interest from other companies, which have agreed to donate time, products and resources to complete the memorial, Holbrook said.

“We hope that the 9/11 Memorial Park will provide a place for the community to gather and reflect upon one of the biggest tragedies to ever effect our country, a place where parents can bring their children, a place where grandparents can bring their grandchildren to learn about the events of

9/11,” Holbrook said. Currently, the beam is being stored at NuCor Steel until memorial plans are finalized. Completion is expected to be before the 10th anniversary. When asked how 9/11 impacted firefighters across the country, Holbrook said it “was like losing a brother

or sister to a heinous crime, 343 of them at once.” “It is important for everyone to remember that day, to never forget the lives lost, the supreme sacrifice that 343 fire fighters made to help rescue people they didn’t even know and not because it was their job, but because it was a calling. A calling that few

come to learn, understand and appreciate,” Holbrook said. “This country came together during one of the worst times in American history. That serves as hope that we the people, the United States of America, can make it through anything when we come together and with the grace of God.”

Recruitment the state at their respective firehouses for a unified recruitment drive, as part of National Volunteer Week 2011. Not only will Recruit NY be an opportunity to highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer firefighter, it will also raise public

awareness about the need for volunteers. “Come on out and join us for this unique recruitment day at our fire station no. 1,” said Fire Chief K. C. Pickard. “This is a great opportunity for our neighbors to observe the exciting tasks of a firefighter. Our current members love what they do,

they are everyday neighbors helping neighbors in need. We hope our recruitment day will inspire other area residents to join our fire service family.” Throughout the day, the BVFC will conduct tours of the station display, demonstrate the various tools and equipment affiliated

with the operation and have activities for visitors to participate in. Members of the BVFC will also discuss the requirements to become a volunteer and answer questions regarding involvement in the organization. “Our recruitment is not limited to only those people who want to enter a burn-

ing building to extinguish a fire,” Pickard said. “We are in need of support people as well as firefighters. Perhaps you have a skill that we can use. We can use people from all walks of life. Stop by our open house and tell us what you may have to offer and we can find a place for you.”

can hopefully show to the residents of the fire district that they have nothing to fear about no one showing up. He added that neither fire department would lose its identity should the proposed merger be approved.

B’ville girls lax opens, romps past Saratoga By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com

More than a decade has passed since the Baldwinsville girls lacrosse team last claimed a Section III Class A title. Not that the Bees haven’t tried to end that drought, always going deep into the sectional playoffs before making a painful exit – including a 10-9 defeat to Fayetteville-Manlius in last year’s semifinal round at CBA’s Alibrandi Stadium.

Now another quest for glory has begun for head coach Doug Rowe and his B’ville squad, and the opener went well as the Bees throttled Saratoga Springs 13-5 last Tuesday night at Rome Free Academy Stadium. With a large amount of returning talent, the Bees quickly shook any possible opening-night jitters and, in the first half, shut out the Blue Streaks, ultimately building a 9-0 edge. Saratoga fared better in the second half, but the issue was settled. Jen Tilly, with three goals, led a well-balanced

B’ville attack where Maggie Monnat, Claire Monnat, Katie Sullivan and Erin Ward each scored twice. Claire Monnat added a pair of assists, too, as Meghan Cuddy and Sarah Klaben notched single goals. For the first big test of the season, B’ville would visit four-time defending sectional champion West Genesee Tuesday night, prior to Friday’s home opener against Corcoran. B’ville’s boys team also opens this week – and also plays West Genesee and Corcoran.

the most legendary comedy venues, it’s fair to say Frigolette is on a solid path. His television appearances include: Cake Boss, ElimiDate, MTV nationally as well as Bridge Street locally. Frigolette’s charisma helps him ransack audiences with his true stories of awkward interactions, biting quips and occasional crowd work. He has worked with comedians such as: Amy Schumer, Lisa Lampanelli, Todd Barry, Kurt Metzger, Chuck Nice, Judah Friedlander and more. Frigolette loves to come back to Syracuse and perform for the town that created him. Coming along for the ride are former locals and now established headlining comedians: Jimmy D Della Valle and Moody McCarthy. Jimmy D Della Valle is a 1990 Graduate of CNS. He was born in North Syracuse in an Italian/ Irish household and immediately enrolled into Catholic School. He was quickly recognized as a self-made talent by St. Rose of Lima Elementary when he was expelled for being the class clown. He

spent his adolescence and early adulthood in Central New York graduating from CNS and getting a position with the Turning Stone Casino. Moody McCarthy is a 1984 Graduate of Corcoran High School. He became a regular performer at Wiseguys and was backed by owner Bruno Schirripa and club emcee Joe DeLion, who later went on to run Viva DeBris in the basement of the Hotel Syracuse. They both saw McCarthy’s potential, and DeLion brought him on road gigs all throughout the US. A keen monologist, Moody garnished a lot of local attention and was offered a recurring slot on Big Mike’s Morning Show on Y94FM, a position he held for eight months. Frigolette and friends can be seen for one performance at 8 p.m. April 9 at the Palace Theatre. Tickets are $20 and open to all ages. Expect adult language and a 90-minute gut busting experience. Palace Theatre is located at 2384 James St. in Syracuse and reservations can be made online at brownpapertickets.com or via link at palaceonjames.com.

Harbour Heights’ residents, children and adults, pose on top of the big sledding hill during the neighborhoods recent Winter Fun Day. Everyone braved the cold and enjoyed a fun afternoon full of activities and just getting together. Events included a sledding hill, mini hill for the little ones, a snow maze, bowling and paint the snowmen with colored water in squirt bottles. A first annual Crock Pot Cook Off took place with pots eaten to the bottom, along with hot dogs, hot chocolate and desserts provided by the Homeowners’ Association and some residents. A snow sculpture contest held in neighborhood front yards produced the following winning families: the Gerharz with a sunbather lounging in the snow and the Yorkeys with a giant skull fort. Both families were also winners last year. The event was organized by Darlene Doubleday with help from Bob Crandall, Chad Fletcher, Mike Hulchanski, Colleen Damato, Pat Dickman, Pat Apicella, Kathleen Jenne and Becky Cerio, together with many neighbors who brought chili, pasta or soup.

Durgee students win essay contest

Parental seminar at library Herkimer-based child and family therapist Ward V. Halverson, LCSW-R, M.Ed. will present a free public seminar from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday April 13 at the Baldwinsville Public Library on ending childhood defiance. Parents struggling to manage children and teens are especially invited. The seminar is informal with question and answer opportunities to discuss unique child mental health situations with the area’s

well-known family therapist and author. According to Halverson, “SimpleThree focuses more on management of children than the children themselves, through a time-tested, clinically-proven, two-step approach.” This highstructured system of child management is designed specifically to end oppositional defiance and childhood anger management problems.

Syracuse Home specializes in short-term rehabilitation In a blink of an eye, Michelle Rurka’s life changed forever. On her way to visit her family in New Jersey, she hit a patch of black ice on the highway and lost control of her car. It flipped several times before resting on its roof. The impact of the crash broke her back. Once stabilized in the hospital weeks later, she chose Syracuse Home’s short-term rehabilitation to help her recover from her injuries. “I am so grateful for the care I received at Syracuse Home. The therapists are welltrained, supportive and committed to helping us return home to our families,” says Rurka. Syracuse Home’s comprehensive short-term rehabilitation has rapidly become one of Central New York’s most recommende d prog rams.

Short-term rehabilitation at Syracuse Home focuses on recovery by helping individuals build the strength, independence and confidence they need to return home. The professional rehabilitation therapies staff works with individuals with orthopedic conditions resulting from elective surgeries like hip or knee replacements or injuries such as multiple fractures resulting from accidents. Physical and occupational therapies develop skills that enable residents to lead independent lives. “After my accident, I never thought I would walk again. Within three weeks of rehabilitation, I returned home. Words cannot describe how wonderful it felt to actually walk into my home. I can’t say enough about my

experience. The nurses went above and beyond their normal duties to address my individual needs. I highly recommend Syracuse Home for short-term rehabilitation,” says Rurka. Occupational therapies address muscle strength, range of motion, plus cognitive and visual skills that enhance every day activities. When appropriate, speech therapies address treatment and management of communication impairments as well as swallowing disorders. Located on a beautiful 150-acre campus in historic Baldwinsville, Syracuse Home offers a full continuum of healthcare programs and services for seniors including; independent retirement living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, skilled nursing care and short-term reha-

source that helps to improve the examiner’s ability to identify abnormalities that may have been missed under normal lighting. Your dental professional will conduct the exam as follows: 1. First your dental professional will exami=ne your mouth and look for any abnormalities. 2. Next, you will rinse with a solution that will help your dental professional conduct the ViziLite Plus exam. 3. Then, your dental professional will examine your mouth using ViziLite. 4. If a suspicious lesion is detected, it will be marked with TBlue, a blue dye, and documented. What will my dentist see? Most of the time your dental professional will conduct a thorough oral cancer screening examination that includes ViziLite Plus, and will see that everything looks completely normal. That is good news! However, there may be times when your dental professional identifies something that looks abnormal. At that point, your dental professional will use their expertise and may ask you to come back in a few weeks to follow up, or may refer you to an oral surgeon for a biopsy. One American dies every hour from oral cancer. The typical risk factors for oral cancer such as tobacco use and chronic alcohol consumption may be commonly known, however a new risk factor called HPV is now chang-

ing the face of oral cancer. HPV has long been known to cause cervical cancer in women and recent studies show that it may play a role in more than 25 percent of oral cancer cases. The human papilloma virus is a common sexually transmitted virus that is thought to be causing oral cancer in an increasingly younger patient population. Few people, if any, even know they have it. That is why your dentist recommends a potentially life saving screening exam called ViziLite Plus. During April, this $50 procedure will be offered at $25 in recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month. If you are looking for a dental provider, Dr. Shapero is featuring a New Patient Special. Receive a free exam with cleaning and X-ray. Offer ends July 1, 2011. Call 625-6643 today for these services and ask about their spring specials on in-office bleaching and adult braces. In order to be more available, the office is now open until 7 p.m. Tuesdays. They are also a par provider for Delta Dental PPO, Delta Premier and DeCare. Local employers include Wegmans, Anheuser-Busch, AARP, Erie Insurance, Lockheed Martin Corp., M&T Bank, New York Power Authority, Clifton Springs Cavalier Transportation and others. The practice of Dr. Suzanne Shapero is located at 1 Charlotte St. in the heart of Baldwinsville. Dr. Shapero and her staff look forward to meeting new patients.

navigate our own internal changes while also navigating all the various changes in the economy and banking regulations,” Russo said. “Many small banks face a merger at the time executive and senior officers retire,” she said. “The continued viability of Seneca Federal is not only a tribute to the board, but also to the retiring officers and employees who provided others with the knowledge and skill sets necessary for the association to carry on for many more decades under the thrift charter and to this end we are very thankful to be given this opportunity entrusted to us.” Looking ahead to 2011, management remains committed to maintaining a steady course in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them by the board, as the merger between the Office of Thrift Supervision and the Office of The Comptroller of the Currency occurs in July of this year. “The extensive regulatory changes brought about by the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the passing of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act in 2010 marks yet another transformation in banking activities, which can stretch the resources of small community banks,” points out Russo. Reform will be far reaching into such areas as Federal consumer protection law compliance, state law compliance, and Homeland Security Regulations. The regulatory burden is always disproportionately heavy for reputable lenders such as Seneca Federal as attempts are made by the federal government to police the dishonest few. Russo is emphatic that the association will continue an ongoing commitment to educate and train its employees regarding new and changing compliance regulations to better assist both customers and noncustomers. She believes that it’s reassuring for members to know our officers and employees have the capability and initiative to successfully implement programs required by the complex regulatory environment. This ability is just as necessary as financial performance in keeping community banks viable as dictated by the federal examination process.

CANCER BEWARE “I had cancer. Cancer never had me.” Yesterday, I got out my fishing rod. I couldn’t help thinking of everyone at HOA. It was last spring when I found out. I was overwhelmed, distraught – and scared. I thought my fishing days were over. Then I went to HOA. My medical team all said, “We have the technology to fight this thing!” and showed me the CyberKnife. It sounded scary, but when I learned how it worked and how safe it was, I had hope for the first time. Your attitude really inspired me, your staff always encouraged me and your plan of action worked. I may have had cancer, but cancer never had me. Today, my kids and I are heading up to the lake.

Susan Bertrand, founder of Maureen’s Hope Foundation, named for her sister who died after a two-year battle with cancer, said she decided to support the program because of its capacity to make a difference immediately. “Cancer is a journey, and helping to make that journey a little brighter for someone each day, can make a world of difference,” she said. “This program is uplifting for everyone – patients, parents and caregivers.” Maureen’s Hope Foundation, an annual sponsor of the program, recently raised more than $26,000 as a participant in the SADA Charity Preview. Bertrand would like to thank everyone involved and felt the event was a great success.

For some children, the string of beads is small enough to be a bracelet; for others it’s the length of a hospital corridor. Whatever the size, each string is a symbolic reminder of the daily ups and downs, events and treatments of a child’s hospitalization and the courage they have called on to ease the pain. Thanks to the generous support of the Baldwinsville-based Maureen’s Hope Foundation, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital launched the innovative, national program called Beads of Courage to its young patients undergoing cancer treatments during a reception March 18. “The strings are like a diary of a child’s hospitalization; each bead symbolizes a significant event in their stay with us, but most importantly the beads demonstrate the courage these young patients call on
