Uber decision Residents, local officials discuss ride-sharing apps

F

inding a way to Downtown Syracuse on the weekends is a hassle for Timothy Maalouf. Maalouf, 22, said it’s difficult to find a taxi that will pick him up at his home in Manlius. Often times, he must first go to his friend’s house in the Eastwood neighborhood before catching a cab downtown. Even then, a one-way ride into the city costs about $45. Because of this, Maalouf said that he’ll sometimes choose to go out somewhere closer to home, or stay in entirely. “I’m sure if it was an easier process, we’d go downtown more,” Maalouf

said. “It’s expensive to get down there.” Maalouf and other Central New York residents could soon have an easier and cheaper way to travel—by using ridesharing apps such as Uber and Lyft. Uber and Lyft are not currently operating in most areas north of New York City. But, on Feb. 6, the New York State Senate passed legalization that would legalize the use of ride-sharing apps statewide. The bill now moves to the state assembly. Robert Podfigurny, president of the Hanover Square Association, and Richard Sykes, president of the Armory Square Association, penned a letter to their local state representatives in June supporting the expansion of ride-sharing into Syracuse. Podfigurny, also a partner in the Evergreen—a restaurant and bar that opened in 2015 on East Water Street—said that ride-

sharing will allow more people access to Downtown Syracuse. “I think it brings people out from different neighborhoods, it will bring people out from the suburbs,” Podfigurny said. “No one is going to spend [$40 or $50 on a cab] to go out to eat down here. They are going to stay close to home or they’re going to stay in. I think it increases flow, it increases traffic— in terms of people—downtown.” Podfigurny added that ride-sharing will also benefit the expanding population of downtown residents. He said that it will provide them with the ability to travel outside of the city for groceries or doctor’s appointments. For some of those residents, the addition of Uber and Lyft may eliminate their need for a car altogether, reducing the cost of living downtown. Uber l Page 6

Walking through store after store looking for the perfect outfit, window shopping with friends or running around a packed mall doing last minute Christmas shopping used to be typical shopping habits of many consumers about five years ago. However, as technology has advanced, the shopping experience has transformed. Most affected has been the way we shop, and where. E-commerce has become commonplace. This process, where companies and small businesses have developed websites and begun selling products online, has opened a whole new world for shoppers. Feeling the pressure of this competition, local retailers have opted to follow suit by also making purchasing

of products and services available online. Pride and Joy Shop, a store for baby products, opened in Skaneateles in 2014 and is co-owned by Kathleen Murray. She said, as a mother living in that area, she didn’t feel there were many places to find things a new baby would need beyond clothes and shoes and decided to open up her own store. Pride and Joy Shop had a website up and running when it first opened, with ecommerce available soon after. The idea behind the site was to give consumers a chance to see what the store was about and what products were available. Although they have had their website for three years, Murray said she doesn’t consider it a driving force of her profits, but feels she is gaining a wider audience by being available online.

“We’ve had a fair amount of sales out of state,” Murray said. “Really, our retail space is where we have a majority of our sales, but we’ve been surprised by getting some online orders from California, or Washington state or even Texas.” J-Michael Shoes, a local shoe and apparel store that was established on Marshall Street in Syracuse in 1983, has a four-year old IT department to keep up with the times that is run by Nils Wiklund. Wiklund was a part of the switch from analog to digital and developed the store’s website to make the company more competitive, but said what they were battling against was different four years ago. “It used to be, before I started working here, that the E-commerce l Page 6

For the past 30 years, partners John David Hunter and Bob Winston have combined their talents as co-owners of the business and have built their reputation as innovators of home design. Hunter, an award winning architecture and interior designer attended Ecole des Beaux Arts in Montreal before moving to New York and solidifying his career at companies such as Bloomingdale’s in their interior design heyday of the ‘70s, and working for private clients throughout the country and abroad. Their projects range from complete structural redesign of existing homes, interior redesigns and the creation of “smart kitchens� for those who truly do use them to cook. They pride themselves on collaboration with their clients to create living spaces that don’t only embody core principles of design but the wants and needs of the people who will be living in them. Drawn away from the lifestyle of New York and Connecticut, where they were previously located, JD Hunter/home found its new place in the village of Cazenovia, where they say, the positive attitude of the people surrounding them fosters creativity. “We interpret the needs of clients and execute them with good taste; it’s completely different from client to client,� said Winston. “We’re not one trick ponies. If you want ultra-modern we can do ultra-modern, if you want traditional we can do traditional, if you want monochromatic we can do that too. It’s a meeting of the minds, we don’t impose on anybody.� While utilizing the existing characteristics of the houses they work on, they refuse to be different for the sake of being different. Sensibility of with an emphasis on comfort allows them to collaborate successfully with clients. “Interior design has to be sensible,� said Hunter. “In a family full of little kids you don’t give them a ton of breakable stuff. It’s listening and then designing what’s right.� The pair is currently working on four full houses in Central New York as well as dozens of smaller projects, and are frequently called back to Connecticut and New York City, as well as across the country, to work their magic. Winston’s business background allows a smooth flow of logistics while Hunter handles the creative aspects of work. Hunter and Winston foster close relationships with their cli-

Customer service is key at Hudson & Mowins

Since 1946, Hudson & Mowins has made its name in Baldwinsville as a family-owned auto repair shop with strong connections to its customers. Although a lot has changed in their industry, third-generation owners Greg and Cathy Hudson have kept the founders’ vision alive. “We have stuck with the same ethics [Greg’s] father and grandfather used,” said Cathy Hudson, secretary and treasurer of Hudson & Mowins. Her husband, Greg, is president of Hudson & Mowins. Cathy said they pride themselves on honesty and loyalty to their customers. They rely mostly on word-of-mouth to generate their customer base.

“When you live in a small town, you’ve got to treat people right because word gets around,” Cathy said. “We still have customers come in that Greg’s grandfather [co-founder Gates Hudson] used to have,” she added. “They’re very few, but it’s nice to see them.” Caring for the customer is important to Hudson & Mowins. They provide a lounge for people to wait for their cars, and 12-and-ahalf-year-old Welsh Terrier Ally is always up for a friendly pat. “Customers expect to see her,” Cathy said. “They’ll just swing in to get their Ally fix.” This year, Hudson & Mowins celebrated the 100,000th customer since Greg and Cathy took over the business in 2002. Murray said that events like these and the continued advocacy for buying and supporting local retailers is helpful to their business. “It can remind people how important it is support the local businesses,” Murray said. “There’s this phrase ‘buy it where you try it’ which really rings true, especially to some of the items we sell in our store.” “I imagine that anybody who is using a ride-sharing app is going to get where they are going via car one way or another,” Bilodeau said. “So, whether they were driving or somebody else was driving, I don’t see a major increase in traffic.” One app similar to ride-sharing already operating in the Syracuse area is Truxx. Launched by Carlos Suarez in March 2016, Truxx allows a user to request a registered driver with a pickup truck to help transport objects that do not fit in a typical car or sedan. Truxx has seen 915 drivers sign up since its launch and operates wherever one is registered. Suarez said that the company’s largest amount of business occurs in New York City and South Florida. Suarez said Truxx currently averages four to five jobs in the Central New York area per month, and he can see that number increasing as the business continues to expand. Suarez also said that he is looking to partner with retailers—such as Target or Walmart—to provide customers with an option to rival Amazon Prime’s two-day delivery service. “We can offer same-day delivery for large items,” Suarez said. “Instead of ordering a [large item] online and having it delivered to you in five days, or two days, you can buy them in store and have Truxx deliver it same day for a minimal fee, or maybe the retailer eats some of that cost.”

he Burdick family of automotive dealerships has been serving Central New Yorkers since 1937. In 2017, they are celebrating their 80th year helping drivers and families hit the open road! Eighty years ago, Glenn Burdick planted the seeds of what would grow into the Burdick Automotive group. Glenn and his father initially operated a garage and gas station in North Syracuse. His early dealerships included Rambler, Kaiser-Fraser and more. Today, local drivers buy and service their vehicles at over 20 Burdick dealerships, making it the largest auto group in the area. Roger Burdick Mazda opened in the early 1970s on Route 11 in North Syracuse, and relocated to Driver’s Village in 2003. Today, the Mazda showroom is undergoing a complete renovation that will feature improved customer amenities, video screens, new display and service areas and more.
