New Year’s Eve party planned for seniors
big
Start celebrating New Year’s Eve early at the Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse. The JCC will hold a “Noon” Year’s Eve Party for seniors from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31, at the center on 5655 Thompson Road, DeWitt. The event, part of the JCC’s Senior Dining Program, will begin with a kosher lunch and include live music by pianist Ann Barnes. This special holiday luncheon, open to seniors age 60 and older, is being offered for a suggested contribution of $5 per person. Registration for lunch is required by Dec. 23 by calling 445-2360. The JCC’s “Noon” Year’s Eve Party will feature dancing, a New Year’s countdown with sparkling juice toast, and singing of Auld Lang Syne. Guests are welcome to don their party clothes and dress appropriately for the occasion. The room will be decked out with New Year’s sparkle and bling, and party hats and noise makers will be provided. For more information, call 445-2360.

Volunteers sought to knit, crochet newborns’ hats for American Heart Month
C
alling all knitters! The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) is collecting red hats knitted and crocheted by volunteers to distribute to local hospitals during this February, American Heart Month, through the Little Hats, Big Hearts program. The red hats will be given to babies born during American Heart Month, along with important heart health information for parents. The hats serve as a reminder that heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Congenital heart defects are the most common type of birth defect in the country. Thanks to the advocacy efforts of dedicated AHA/ASA volunteers, all newborns in New York State receive pulse oximetry testing to help detect congenital heart defects before they leave the hospital. Call 728-7544 or visit heart.org/LittleHatsBigHearts and click on New York (Syracuse) for more information. Hats must be received by Jan. 15 to be delivered to participating hospitals. Winter Break vacation camp set for Dec. 24-31
cnyspca pet of the week
Come meet Pumba, the ‘mystery’ dog
The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse will offer a Winter Break vacation camp for school-age children in grades K-6 on Thursday, Dec. 24 and Monday, Dec. 28 through Thursday, Dec. 31 at the JCC on 5655 Thompson Road, DeWitt. Dec. 24 will be a half-day and run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 28-31 will be full days and run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Half-day programs and early/late care to extend the day from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. are also available. The JCC of Syracuse will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Each day of camp a variety of age-appropriate indoor and outdoor activities will keep the children busy, entertained and having fun. From sledding, snowman making, arts and crafts, sports and games to local field trips, there will be something for everyone to make this upcoming break from school memorable. Local field trips planned will be to the MOST and Bowl Mor Lanes. For more information and to obtain a registration form, call 445-2360 or visit jccsyr.org.
Pumba is a mystery dog – a shepherd mix? a husky mix? – no one knows for sure and Pumba’s not talking! We do know that he came to the shelter as a stray and he’s a sweet guy who loves going for walks and getting attention. He walks great on a leash and is very easy-going. And look at that face - so handsome! Pumba is loving and affectionate and would do great in a home with kids seven and up. He would also do well in a home of empty-nesters or retirees. He loves everyone and is just a pleasure to have around. The real mystery is why this wonderful dog doesn’t have a home yet! Come visit Pumba today and see for yourself what a special dog he is!

is your teen about to take the wheel? Tips for talking to your family’s newest driver about safety while on the road
W
hen you hand car keys to your teenager for the first time, your heart races as you think of what could happen. The fact is that car accidents are the number-one cause of death among teens in the U.S., so it’s important to communicate the gravity of this newfound responsibility. That’s why Trico Products (tricoproducts.com) has made a commitment to make teen driving safer and encourage parents to have a serious, sit-down conversation with their children before allowing them to get behind the wheel. To help make that conversation a little easier, Trico offers these helpful talking points:. Seatbelt — Teens buckle up far less frequently than adults, so be sure to reiterate that fastening your seatbelt should be the very first thing you do before keys are even in the ignition. Texting — Cell phones, the radio and other passengers are all major distractions. Every second a teen takes their eyes of the road could be an opportunity for a terrible accident. Cite examples of recent car accidents from texting while driving to further establish this danger. Drinking and driving — It’s important to stress that no one under the age of 21 should be drinking. But, let them know to make the right decision and have a designated driver or call for a ride home. Defensive driving — Teens need to be hyper-sensitive to all surroundings, since their brain is not fully developed. They must not only be aware of how they’re driving but how others drive too so collisions are avoided. Penalties — Talk about the fines associated with tickets, and let them know they will be responsible for any
monetary repercussions and attending traffic court. Roadside emergencies and maintenance — Go over what to do and whom to call in an emergency. Make certain they have roadside assistance and insurance information readily available. Also, teach them about basic maintenance to ensure they schedule regular oil changes, tire rotations and inspections and always check that they’ve changed the wiper blades. Having that first conver-
