District receives state aid increases, some reductions still in store By Pierce Smith

editor@cazenoviarepublican.com The Cazenovia Board of Education will conduct a public briefing on its proposed 2011-2012 budget at 6:30 p.m. May 10. The $25.7 million proposal will be voted upon by the public on May 17. The proposed 2011-12 budget was tentatively approved on April 11. At the meeting, Assistant Superintendent Bill Furlong presented the specifics of the budget. Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed cuts to school aid had left districts all over New York State scrambling to bridge large gaps in their budgets. Even after restoring $272 million of school aid in the state’s tentative $132.5 billion budget, many districts, including Cazenovia, will still have to make changes. “Our income comes from two places, taxes and state aid. When our revenue is decreased, where are we supposed to get it? We have to find it in increased taxes,” Superintendent Bob Dubik said. “The

four areas we got the money from are a combination of increased taxes, faculty concessions, district reductions and use of funds balance.” Cazenovia schools initially faced a deficit of $1.25 million due to cuts in state aid. The restored budget returns $218,000 to the district. Dubik explained that the funds will allow the district to keep an Athletic Trainer and reduce the increase of the proposed tax levy from 3.3 to 2.9 percent. “ The b o ard worked real hard, knowing the fin an c i a l t i m e s we’re in, to keep the tax levy down. These are certainly different times; there are tough decisions to make. Bob Dubik We heard clearly from the community. They didn’t want programs eliminated,” Dubik said. “This is the consequence. We could have cut more from the budget, but we would’ve really cut into programming; we kept all academic programs.” The various reductions that the pro-

Public Works: Inflatable pools over two-feet prohibited By Pierce Smith

editor@cazenoviarepublican.com As temperatures begin to rise and spring makes its presence known, the Cazenovia Department of Public Works would like to remind residents that inflatable pools over two-feet are prohibited within the village. “Kiddie pools are fine, anything up to two-feet deep is allowed, Public Works Administrator Bill Carr said. “But swimming pools and hot tubs with a depth over two-feet require a permit. Currently, many retail stores offer inflatable pools that can reach depths of four-feet. These pools can be purchased for around $200 and can be ready for recreational use in one hour. While bought and sold legally, reasons these inflatable pools are prohibited within village limits pertain to safety issues

LOTTE KLAVER

While relatively inexpensive and easy to install, inflatable pools with depths over 24 inches are considered zoning and safety hazards, and are prohibited within the Village of Cazenovia.

and zoning regulations. Depths of more than 24 inches and a lack of supervision can quickly lead to dangerous situations Statistics released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission show that 250 children under the age of 5 drown in pools each year. Cazenovia village code states that all pools over a depth of 24 inches require a fence or other type of enclosure. Section 180-98 subsection C states “Every swimming pool shall be completely enclosed by walls, fences or similar structures not less than five feet nor more than six feet in height. Accessible openings shall be limited to doors or gates equipped with self-closing and locking devices which keep the opening securely fastened at all times. Horizontal openings in fences or walls shall be a maximum of three inches. No permit is required for the installation of a swimming pool or hot tub that is entirely aboveground and a depth of less than two-feet. In-ground swimming pools and hot tubs are permitted as accessory structures within the village, however a permit must first be applied for. Failure to comply with village code may lead to fines or further action by officials. Also remember: For rescue vehicle and ambulance purposes, be sure to prominently display house numbers on the front of residences. To learn more about the Village Code, a copy is available for viewing in the village office at Municipal Building at 90 Albany St. or access Cazenovia’s website villageofcazenovia.com. Opinion Editorial

Take a walk; meet new friends in Caz Here’s an idea: If you shop in the village, you can strike a blow against higher taxes. Deputy Mayor Kurt Wheeler led us to that conclusion last week as he discussed the 2011-12 budget. The spending plan is hinged on two factors, according to Wheeler: sales taxes generated locally and expanding the community’s tax base, which grew just one percent last year. “People need to understand that when they buy locally in Madison County, it [money] comes back directly to help hold down their property taxes and maintain our streets and parks,” said Wheeler. “Money spent in Onondaga County does nothing for us.” He is so right. The pace of life makes it easy for us to forget about where we live and to make the most of our purchases as we come and go from work. Consequently, we often overlook goods and services that are available here, where we live. The onset of agreeable weather is the perfect time to shake off the dust from being cooped up all winter and take a stroll through the village. You might be surprised by what you’ll find and may be more than pleased by the friendly people you’ll meet if you browse the shops and services downtown. And if you pass by Dave’s Diner, be sure stop into the Cazenovia Republican’s office and say hello. We’d be interested in hearing what you think of our new home delivery service for the Republican and your suggestions on how we can serve you better.

Join the discussion: Should English be the official language of the United States? Caz College Debate Society examines the effect of language on unity This year Cazenovia College’s annual “Great Debate” takes on the issue of English as the official language of the United States. At 7 p.m. on Thursday April 28 in McDonald Lecture Hall of Eckel Hall on Lincklaen Street, the Cazenovia College Debate Society argues whether language unites or divides citizens of the United States. The debate, in which affirmative and opposition teams will analyze the pros and cons of the resolution “English shall be the official language of the United States,” is free and open to the public. Maureen M. Louis, J.D., associate professor and director of the Commu-

nication Studies Program, is also the Debate Society’s coach. She said, “Debate is challenging but it is an effective way to deepen our understanding of the key issues of the day. I am glad that this annual event is part of the life of our College.” Of this debate, she noted that many Americans do not speak English as their first language, and asked, “Is that a problem?” Of the more than 20 students on the debate team, several are from Central New York, including Alexander M. Baker, of Fulton, a senior who will argue for the affirmative and Ryan C. McGovern, of Syracuse, a junior who will argue in opposition. Nicole E.

Modafferi, of Cicero, is a pariticpating senior who will also argue in opposition alongside Kimberly N. Norton, of Mexico, N.Y. As each student has a different background, each has a different view and approach to debate. Baker is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies; McGovern is working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental studies, specializing in environmental biology; Modafferi is working toward a bachelor of fine arts degree in fashion design and Norton is working toward a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication studies.

If the First Amendment had to be ratified today... By Tina Dupuy Republicans will tell you they’re the sole Constitutional purists in the country; they worship the document more/better than you do. But imagine if the First Amendment had to be voted on today. It would need two-thirds majority in both Houses just to be proposed. Consider it: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” First, it’s way too progressive for today’s rabid rightwing. And if the Republicans saw this Amendment as a win for Obama – it would have to be stopped by any means necessary. All the President would have to do is say he thinks it’s important for Ameri-

cans to have freedom of speech, religion, the press and assembly. Then the Tina Dupuy Tea-nee Republican Party would call them “Obama Freedoms.” Right-wing blogs next would tap, “What do Hitler, Machiavelli, Darwin, Che Guevara and the New Black Panther Party all have in common? They all love Obama Freedoms.” “Obama Freedoms will indoctrinate our children to be secular Islamists who want taxpayers to pay for gay marriage abortions at Ground Zero,” Newt Gingrich would say in some Vaseline-lensed ominous music-packed video he’d hawk on his website. Lawmakers would rush the House floor to accuse freedom of speech as being “bad for business.” Others would call it “disruptive.” Speaker John Boehner, calling himself an originalist, would decry (get it?)

any changes whatsoever to the Constitution. “Hell no, you can’t!” AM talk radio would chime in: “Obama Freedoms will even apply to people here illegally! Drug dealers will be able to protest in your front yard! We’re a nation of laws, not Obama Freedoms!” Others would use it as an opportunity to rail against the press. Media critic Sarah Palin would take to her Twitter account, “LSMwnt 2Bfree noh8ve Obma& wrk, cost jobs. Hurt 4US kllrep$. SeeFB post.” Inadvertently proving themselves, in fact, lame - an entire 24-hour news cycle would be devoted to deciphering her tweet. Then the self-proclaimed modern-day Shakespeare would make up a word just for the occasion: virrification. It’s a cross of verification and vilify and maybe viral, but no one would know for sure. It would just seem to fit perfectly for the issue, and then it would

be overused until it lost all irony. UrbanDictionary.com would offer to use the new word in a sentence: To kill the bill, use virrification (see: refudiate and squirmish). Lopsided, meaningless polls will be taken: “Do you think people who just so happen to call themselves journalists should be free to do so?” The results will be split. People will comment, “I don’t know how comfortable I am with people being able to say ANYTHING they want. We’re in three wars!” And, “Free speech will shove pornography down our throats!” Commercials would be launched, and the amendment would be called a “government take over of religion” by Koch-brotherfunded shadow groups. Average-looking character actors would be hired to say how scared they are of Muslims stoning their children in schools. See Dupuy, page 12

Caz Tree Commission to commemorate its fourth annual Arbor Day The public is invited to join the Cazenovia Tree Commission at 9 a.m., Saturday April 23 in Memorial Park for a ceremony and tree installation in honor of Arbor Day. This year’s event will take on added significance, as the tree being planted, a sugar maple, is donated by the Cazenovia Garden Club to mark the Village’s bicentennial. The choice of sugar maple as the bicentennial tree is particularly appropriate because sugar maples have traditionally been a large part of Cazenovia and have always been landmarks in the Memorial Park location. During the ceremony, all those who have made donations to the Tree Commis-

sion over the past year will be recognized. If anyone would like to donate a tree to the village for installation this year please contact Village Trustee Amy Mann at amymann@windstream.net. The Tree Commission is actively seeking ways to continue repopulating the village with trees in these challenging financial times, and is encouraging people to consider donating a tree to memorialize a loved one or recognize a special moment such as the birth of a child or a wedding anniversary. All donations will be recognized at the Commission’s Arbor Day event in 2012. For more information about this year’s event and the Tree Commission, contact Commission Director Thomas Tait at ttait@twcny.rr.com.

Lake necessitated that a large portion of the dike be rebuilt to protect both the pond and the Village storm sewer, which empties into the pond. The water level in Carpenter’s Pond was lowered for this construction and kept low to assess the repairs and discourage further tunneling through the dike by beaver and muskrat. In early summer, CPF will add a small information kiosk and some additional benches, as well as plant some native shrubs along the reconstructed dike. Along the Carpenter Street side of the pond invasive shrubs will be removed. The water level in the pond will be restored to its historic level, once a few minor seeps through the dike are repaired. The Carpenter’s Pond area is enjoyed by a large number of area residents and visitors year-round. Please help CPF maintain this village treasure through your responsible use and enjoyment. If you wish to donate, please send checks to CPF, P.O. Box 627, Cazenovia, N.Y. 13035. To help work on the pond or other projects, contact cpfstaff@verizon.net or call 877-1742.

Cazenovia students and Colgate University put on ‘Munchkin Madness’ By Kailey Krause On the Wednesday April 13, Colgate University students and community children followed the yellow brick road to the second annual “Oz Project” at the Palace Theater in Hamilton. The Oz Project, developed last year by Colgate professors Sheila Clonan and Regina Conti, uses drama games, music and other activities to create an inclusive social learning and growing environment for children with and without special needs. This year, 29 local children from Cazenovia, Hamilton and Morrisville schools participated in the workshop that ran for a period of six weeks and culminated in a final performance at the Palace Theater in Hamilton. The main performance was “Munchkin Madness,” a short play that picks up where “The Wizard of Oz” left off. The whole gang returned, but Dorothy, Toto, the Tinman, the Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion needed some help with conflict resolution. The Munchkins of Oz stepped in to help, and over the course of the play, taught all of the characters some very important lessons about getting along. The performance culminated with a touching sign language interpretation of “Over the Rainbow”

and a lively rendition of “You’ve got a friend in me” as an encore. Appreciating the friend in everyone and celebrating differences were among the main focuses of the project, which was turned into a seminar this year, featuring 19 students taught by Clonan. In addition to working with the children each week, these ambitious and energetic students developed curriculum and activities, evaluated the program, as well as filmed the workshops and final performance to document the children’s development. Their behind-the-scenes work helped the children not only to shine on stage in front of their friends and families, but also to grow in confidence, understanding, acceptance and communication. Although approximately a third of the children in the program have been diagnosed with autism and other disorders, many were extremely outgoing. Each child was valued for what they contributed to the workshop, and each of them brought something special and individual to the performance. “It may be in different ways, but it is all worthwhile,” Clonan said. All of the children greatly enjoyed the opportunity to sing and dance on stage. There will be a final celebration for cast members and their families on May 4, where the documentary produced by the Colgate students highlighting the six weeks of workshop, as well as the final performance, will be screened.

Students of the Cazenovia Central School District will still be offered all the academic programs as previous years. The 2011-12 prospective budget saves funds by reducing spending on athletic teams, supplies and administrative costs.

equipment purchases, athletics, BOCES services, printing and mailing costs, assistant coaches, Elementary Summer School and administrative costs. By reducing equipment acquisitions in the 2011-12 budget year, the district can save $100,000. Recycling athletic gear and minimizing rental costs in the athletic program could net $50,000 and the reduction of BOCES services can save $80,000. Distributing newsletters and notifications electronically could save the district $10,000, while downsizing assistant coaches from some of the athletic teams can cut $14,203 from the budget. Eliminating summer school classes at Burton Street Elementary (which are not state mandated) would net the district an additional $14,500, and decreasing other administrative costs could save the district $21,600. The district plans to reduce staffing by seven positions. It is not filling vacant positions left by retiring teachers, but class sizes will stay about the same because of declining enrollment. In addition to contract negotiations with the teacher’s union that will save the district $550,000, Dubik and his fellow administrators have agreed to a pay freeze for next year. Budget brochures will be mailed before May 10 so all who are interested in learning more about specific reductions may bring their questions and concerns to the briefing.

CNYSA Regatta to be held on Caz Lake By Jean Doering

At Willow Bank Yacht Club, plans are underway to host the CNY Sailing Association Annual Regatta, the weekend of July 9-10, 2011. The “Centrals,” as it is commonly known, is an important date in the regional sailing calendar and will bring participants from 30 sailing clubs to partake in races that weekend. In the next few weeks, a series of articles about the various fleets that will be seen competing on Cazenovia Lake, will be featured. There will be three race courses set on the lake, to concurrently race boats from possibly ten different fleets. The following classes are expected: Lightening, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, Sunfish, 420, Optis, O’penBic, Rhodes Bantam, Flying Scot and Flying Dutchman. The Centrals is an inter-generational regatta, bringing junior sailors, as well as seasoned racers to compete. Being recognized by U.S. Sailing as a Regional Sailing Association means that sailors both Junior and Senior members are encouraged to use the Regionals to qualify for U.S. Sailing National Championships.

One of Willow Bank’s former Junior Fleet members, David Grogono, went on to the Olympics to race a Windsurfer for the Cayman Islands. The CNY Sailing Association, formerly Central New York Yacht Racing Association, was founded in 1931. The first regatta took place that year at Seneca Yacht Club.

Discovering Cazenovia’s History

In history: Week of April 20

The featured property for this week, which first appeared in the March 30 edition, is located at 2032 Main St., in New Woodstock. It is knows as the “Jonathan Smith Tavern.” The information below was compiled mainly from primary sources by the current owner of the tavern property. Jonathan Smith was a member of a family that migrated west from Connecticut through Massachusetts to upstate New York after the Revolutionary War. In 1793, Smith became one of the original purchasers of lots from Holland land speculators, which had acquired land from New York State shortly after the formation of the Federal Union. Smith’s property consisted of 150 acres that became known as “Woodstock Settlement,” and later the Hamlet of New Woodstock. Prior to the nineteenth century, pioneer settler Smith lived on the hillside above the hamlet. Around 1806, the state chartered the Hamilton-Skaneateles Turnpike that would follow the north boundary of Smith’s property. Perhaps sensing a better business opportunity, Smith had a tavern built on the turnpike route, probably by local master builder Nathan Smith who built other prominent buildings in the area in the early 1800s.The tavern structure exists today in its original location.

125 Years Ago April 22, 1886 - It is rumored that Father Meagher has bought of I.L. DeClercq, the lot adjoining the Catholic Church, which is to be enlarged. There is also to be built, a handsome house for the use of the priest, and his present residence is to be remodeled for educational purposes. Palms were distributed in profusion at the Catholic Church last Sunday, and after the service an Italian formed from the sprays beautiful crosses that were fastened to the hats and coats of worshippers, while some plaited and others wore the long leaves.

2032 Main St., New Woodstock Smith was a volunteer SergeantMajor who served as paymaster for the 129th regiment of the New York Militia, which saw duty at Sackets Harbor during the War of 1812. He was also was active in Republican political affairs and was appointed the first postmaster of New Woodstock in 1818. Presumably, the tavern served as the first post office in that community. Though married three times, Smith had no children and died in 1834 during a trip to Illinois. There is no record of tavern operations after his death and the building has served as a private residence since that time. During much of the nineteenth century it was home to the related Ralph Bell and Silas Morse families. Bell and Morse were carriage manufacturers, whose factory across the road from the tavern produced many carriages, rakes, cutters, and wagons. The Jonathan Smith tavern is See DCH, page 12

100 Years Ago April 20, 1911 - There is a report about the town that the village fathers are to be petitioned to change the name of Fenner street to “Farmer’s avenue.” There are eight farmers living on the street and they rightly feel they are deserving of some recognition. The eight are Andrew Whipple, Lorenzo Burroughs, Frank Parisou, Lester Miles, Edgar Lombard, Thos. Heffernan, O.P. Snyder and J.L. Bishop. P.H. Donnelly and Son are agents for George Washington Coffee. This is a new kind; all

you have to do is place a teaspoonful in a cup, pour on water and it is ready to drink. No boiling required. Thursday evening of next week has been named as the time for the holding of the second annual banquet of the Cazenovia Business Men’s Association. The committee, which was appointed at a meeting of the association held last week, was given the power to go ahead and arrange all the details including the determination of the date and the selection of the speaker … A menu that can’t help but appeal to the heart of every man will be served as follows: Grapefruit, soup, rolls, fried chicken, creamed potatoes, peas, brown and white bread, salad, ice cream and cake. Coffee, cigars and cigarettes will also be available … It is hoped that the banquet will be the means of reviving interest in the association which, without any exception, should be the most powerful organization in the village. 50 Years Ago April 20, 1961 – We welcome a son, Charles Misik Colligan to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Colligan of Sims Lane, on Monday April 17, 1961 at Oneida City Hospital, weighing 6 pounds, 12

¾ ounces. Mrs. Colligan is the former Barbara Misik. The championship St. James basketball team, cheerleaders and their guests were honored at a banquet last Thursday evening at the church hall. A spaghetti supper was served by the mothers of the players and cheerleaders. Johnny Gregg received the most valuable player trophy for his steady all-around play throughout the season. Paul Johnson was awarded the most improved player on the team. Coach Cliffe received a sport coat from the players and cheerleaders in appreciation of the work he has done with them. Civil Defense Test will be offered Friday April 28 … All traffic within the county will be stopped at 4 p.m. on Friday April 28. The public is expected to take the nearest available shelter, and occupants of vehicles will remain in them. The “take cover” drill will be ended at 4:10 p.m. The County Fire Service’s “Quick Call” will be sounded on all county sirens to signal the end of the drill. This column is compiled by Sharon Cooney from the Cazenovia Republican archives at Lorenzo State Historic Site in Cazenovia. It is written in the style of the time. Caz boys lacrosse rises to no. 3 state ranking By Phil Blackwell

pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Though a bit disappointed by its narrow defeat at Skaneateles on April 8, the Cazenovia boys lacrosse team could look forward to the fact that it didn’t have to travel anywhere again until May, thanks to six consecutive home games on the docket. More good news arrived early last week with the release of the first state Class C poll. The Lakers were at no. 3, behind only Skaneateles and Cold Spring Harbor, the highest ranking the program has ever achieved. With all that as a backdrop, the long homestand commenced last Tuesday with a visit from Westhill that was convincing in every manner as the Lakers beat the Warriors 14-3. All through the first half, Doyle Judge, Mike Nourse, Clayton Goris and the rest of Cazenovia’s back line turned away anything Westhill tried, leading to a shutout and a 9-0 margin at the break. Finally, the Warriors got on the board in the third quarter, but it was too late. Matt Donovan, John Greacen and Connor Cannizzaro each notched a three-goal hat trick, with Sean Cannizzaro adding two goals and one assist. Sam Lewis, Brad Nardella and Mason Powell also converted, with Chris Giardina joining Greacen, Donovan and Powell with single assists. Two days later, Christian Brothers Academy came to the Fenner Street complex and, for the second time in three weeks, the Lakers teed off on the Brothers, rolling to a 14-4 victory. Unlike the March 30 meeting, a 19-11 decision where

Caz softball beaten by CBA, Solvay By Phil Blackwell Just as quickly as the Cazenovia softball team appeared to emerge as the favorite in the OHSL Liberty division, that status got thrown into question after a pair of painful defeats. On the heels of its 5-3 win at Westhill on April 8, the Lakers went to Christian Brothers Academy last Monday afternoon – and promptly took a 2-1 loss to the Brothers. It started out as a duel between pitchers Nicole Chiarello and Jordan-Sheridan. But in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sheridan broke the 0-0 tie when she drilled a solo home run off Chiarello. Cazenovia tied it, 1-1, in the top of the fifth, Belle Hoagland’s single bringing home Korena Fenton. But CBA immediately countered with a run of its own in the bottom of that frame, Hannah Morris singling home Monica Hanson. Sheridan did the rest, limiting the Lakers to five hits overall and getting superb defense behind her. Chiarello, in defeat, threw a four-hitter that included

eight strikeouts. On Friday (following a 48-hour weather postponement), the Lakers hoped to have a chance at a quick recovery when it visited Solvay, a team that had roared out to a 3-0 start and was making its case as a league title contender. And for much of the afternoon, all went fine for the Lakers – but a stunning rally in the late stages by the Bearcats left Cazenovia on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision. Chiarello blanked Solvay through five innings, rarely surrendering anything as her teammates got to Bearcats pitcher Julie Gardner for single runs in the first, third and fifth. Taylor Malmsheimer had two hits and scored twice as Hoagland’s pair of doubles led to two RBIs. Fenton also scored. Suddenly, Solvay sprang to life in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the margin to 3-2. Then it maintained the momentum by getting the tying and winning runs off Chiarello in the seventh. Nicole Groth’s two-run home run keyed the rally.

Cazenovia needed 10 goals in the third quarter to get clear, the Lakers took charge right away, roaring to a 7-1 lead by the end of the first period and expanding the margin to 11-1 by halftime. Connor Cannizzaro, with four goals and three assists, set the pace as Donovan chimed in with three goals and two assists. Greacen had two goals and two assists, with Powell also finding the net twice. Brad Nardella, Sean Cannizzaro and Lucas Catania notched the other goals. The busy week concluded Saturday, when Marcellus, vastly improved under first-year coach Leo McInerney (it got off to a 4-2 start), arrived at the Sean Googin Sports Complex in Cazenovia . In brutal playing conditions, the Lakers did enough to earn a 9-6 victory over the Mustangs. High winds and rain made the entire game a test of endurance and patience for both sides. Cazenovia, accustomed to playing on grass (Marcellus, like CBA, has an artificial turf home field), adjusted better and steadily built a 7-3 halftime lead. And the lead grew to 9-4 before a fourth-quarter drought, but the Mustangs could not catch up. Greacen, with three goals and one assist, and Connor Cannizzaro, with two goals and three assists, led the attack as Brad Nardella also found the net twice. Powell put up a goal and three assists, while Sean Cannizzaro had one goal and one assist. Ben Romagnoli finished with nine saves. Already having played half its regular-season schedule (and sitting at 7-1), the Lakers are off during most of the spring-break week before returning Saturday with a nonleague game against Central Square at the Fenner Road fields.

Caz girls lax drops thriller to Skaneateles By Phil Blackwell For the second time in three days, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team came agonizingly close to pulling off a huge surprise for its first win of the season. Just as the Lakers had put a scare into Christian Brothers Academy on April 7, it did the same to Skaneateles two days later at the Fenner Street complex, nearly forcing overtime before the other Lakers held on for an 11-10 win.

True, Cazenovia went into the game 0-3 – but it had already faced Skaneateles, losing to them 19-5 on April 2. The fact that, in the span of a week, the rematch would prove so close was astonishing all by itself. Whatever Skaneateles did in the first half, Cazenovia nearly matched it, only trailing 7-5 at the break. Then, led by Kaitlyn Button’s production, the hosts moved closer in the second half, but could not quite catch up. Button, overall, had three goals

and five assists, with Gabby Jaquith also finding the net three times. Hillary Bullock earned two goals, with Kristina Kleine and Rebecca Wheeler also converting. Lauren Devine made 11 saves. Skaneateles saw Dianne Vitkus and Erin Callahan each notch three goals. So when the Lakers took on Westhill and Cortland this week at the Sean Googin Sports Complex in Cazenovia, it was still searching for its first wins of the season.

Local golf teams begin league matches By Phil Blackwell A hint of summer arrived early last week, long enough for the area’s high school golf teams to get fully immersed into the 2011 campaign. Cazenovia’s boys team met long-time OHSL Liberty division power Skaneateles in last Monday’s opener and lost the battle of Laker teams 218-243. High winds at Skaneateles Country Club kept scores up, as Trevor Gatzke and Gus Whitaker led Cazenovia with matching nine-hole totals of 46. Three Skaneateles players topped them, led by Jeff Baldetti, who posted a 40. Oneida opened last Monday with a 203-214 defeat to New Hartford at Foster Ponds. It was a consistent effort on the Indians’ part, with Ben Kallet shooting a 41 as Sam Adams, Dylan McGee and Evan Cooley each posted 42. New Hartford seventh-grader Alec Bard led all individuals with a 37. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill also opened with defeats. Camden topped them 212-224 at Sherrill Community Golf Course as Kyle Renwick, with a 38, was two shots behind the Blue Devils’ Seth Adams. Chris Brunscheen had a 42 and Jake Voelker added a 44. A 210-229 loss to New Hartford followed as Brunscheen improved to a 40 and Renwick finished with a 42. By contrast, Canastota got underway Tuesday with a

174-216 victory over Waterville at Kanon Valley. To lead the Raiders, sophomore Ian Campbell posted a 38, while Steve Piatkowski gained a 43. Taylor Gleason (46) and Mark Beach (47) were close behind. Going to girls golf, Chittenango and Cazenovia met each other on a, cold, wet Wednesday afternoon at Woodcrest, where the Bears shot 191 to the Lakers’ 206 – but both were beaten by Jamesville-DeWitt, who posted 147. Carolyn Ledger led the Bears with a 44, while Maggie Carpenter set the pace for the Lakers with a 47. J-D’s Kara Capstraw topped both of them with a blistering 34 as her teammate, Molly Hair, contributed a 37. The Bears also fell to Christian Brothers Academy 180-243 on Thursday afternoon, with Tiffany Lozipone shooting a 56. Cazenovia had a 242-267 defeat to Westhill where Carpenter posted a 57. VVS began last Monday by taking out Clinton 222-301 at Oneida Community Golf Club. Veteran Tracee Scheibel set the pace for the Red Devils with a 53, with Brittany Heysler and Amanda Snizek each posting 56 and Micaela Shay adding a 57. Meanwhile, Oneida fell to New Hartford 222-253 last Monday at Stonebridge as Kaytlynn Lynch led the Indians with a 55. But the Indians tied New Hartford 286-286 at Heron’s Creek on Friday, Lynch again leading her side with a 58.

Jillian Vogl racing in the 2010 State Championship Qualifier Meet, helped lead the Lakers to an overwhelming 115-25 season-opening victory over Hannibal on April 14 with a first place finish in the 400 meter dash.

The Cazenovia girls track team opened their 2011 campaign just as they left off in 2010 - on a winning note. Sparked by an 81-6 margin on the track, the Lakers easily defeated the visiting Hannibal Warriors 115-25 to begin their Onondaga High School League schedule. Paige Biviano led the Lakers with three individual victories, capturing the 100 hurdles (17.0), high jump (4-10) and the long jump with a section-leading 16-9 performance. Ashley Winn also helped Cazenovia to its dominant showing on the track as she won the 100 in a near-record time of 12.8 seconds and the 200 in 26.8 – both times top the Section III leaderboard. She also anchored Cazenovia’s section-leading 4x100 relay of Piper Gianforte, Audrey Bowers and Jillian Vogl to a 53.2 second finish. Vogl ran to speedy second place finishes in the 100 and 200 and won the 400 in an impressive early-season time of 1:03.0. The Lakers distance events featured a well-balanced attack with senior captain Hollie Marcelle winning the 800 in 2:38.5, Tori Widrick winning the 1500 in 5:18.8 and Jeanette Cud-

ney capturing the 3000 in 11:25.9. All three contributed for a Laker sweep of the relay events with Cudney leading off the 4x800, Widrick running a quick leg on the 4x400 and Marcelle anchoring both to victory. Laura Fitch ensured the Lakers’ went 11 for 11 in the track events with a win in the 400 hurdles. Margaret Wolsey, Emma Wolsey, and Raeanne Clabeaux also contributed to the Cazenovia relay victories. Senior captain Piper Gianforte joined Biviano in the field event winners’ circle with a 8-0 effort in the pole vault to lead all CNY vaulters. Basketball standout Clabeaux also scored in three field events in her first track meet as she joined Audrey Bowers (14-4) to sweep the long jump (14-5), and picked up second place finishes in the triple jump (29-3) and high jump (4-6). Grace Eberle led the Lakers in the discus (second place, 79-9) while Molly Woodworth was second in the shot (27-4) to help Cazenovia to a 3419 edge in the field. The Lakers, with a season record of 1-0 so far, run at the Madison County Championship and Tully Invitational over vacation and will resume their league schedule next week against Solvay and CBA.

Laker boys tennis team improves to 4-0 Not wasting much time, the Cazenovia boys tennis team settled into first place in the OHSL Liberty division before the April school break. A key to this process was last Monday’s match at Christian Brothers Academy, where the Lakers, with a full roster, beat the Brothers 4-1. It helped that CBA could not field a third singles

was Sam Concilla claiming the forfeit. On Thursday, Cazenovia swept both parts of a double match with JordanElbridge, 5-0 decisions that featured single sets to eight games. In them, Cudney, Christakos and Sam Concilla did not drop a game, and the doubles team of Marris-Zimsmeister and Ben Concilla-Jon Iyga were just as successful. Chittenango returned from its rest Thursday to

When David Beagle and David Bethka beat Vadim Shevchuk and Ethan Wingenbach 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, it preserved a doubles sweep that the teams of Chase Martin-Corey Rivet, and Josh Bunce-Tanner Makowski built by earning straight-set wins. “You know what Obama Freedoms will do to this country?! Criminalize bacon! Traffic costs jobs and money! It will ruin this country! “People should be working, but instead the government wants to force us to be on the streets with picket signs. Democratic lawmakers, trying to sound reasonable instead of merely capitulatory, would say there’s too much in the bill - that these controversial freedoms need to be in separate bills so they can be debated individually. “It’s just not realistic to put all these – what the rightwing are calling ‘Obama Freedoms’ – what I’m calling basic rights – in one Amendment to the Constitution. a two-story, post-and-beam Federal style structure with some early Greek-revival embellishments. Interior features show that it was designed specifically as a tavern to fit the way such establishments were operated in the early nineteenth century. A large central entrance hall opening on one side into a tavern room finished to survive rough treatment by bar customers and on the other side into a more formal parlor to be used by more genteel patrons. Both rooms retain fireplaces with original period decorative elements. Cooking was done in the fireplace in the dirt- floored cellar, which had access to both rooms on the first floor. The second floor consisted of one large room where public gatherings were typically held in such taverns. Most interior and exterior architectural features from the original tavern exist today. Soon after the tavern was built, a large story-and-ahalf post-and-beam structure was attached to the south side. This attachment contained a woodshed below and sleeping room above. Over the years the woodshed has been remodeled as residential space, bathroom, and kitchen and the second floor of the tavern was subdivided into bedrooms. Later in the nineteenth century, two smaller additions were added to the western side of the tavern to accommodate an apartment for the extended Morse and Bell families. be solved and precedents were set which are now routine items for putting on regattas. There were no one design classes: except the Stars which included boats from Cooperstown and the Syracuse Yacht and Country Club. The race committee had great difficulty in grouping boats from local one design classes to give good racing. Seneca’s 17’ One Designs proved to be well matched with Owasco’s 10’ Catboats. Transportation of boats between lakes for regattas was a serious problem. There were many regattas on Long Island Sound and elsewhere along the coast where boats could be sailed or towed to the scene of the regatta, but this was the first known attempt to assemble a large fleet from distant landlocked lakes. Light trucks and a few homemade trailers were used for the centerboard boats; but the Stars, weighing nearly a ton, offered a major problem. If a marine railway was available as at the old Fay & Bowen Boat Co. in Geneva, the boat could be floated onto a cradle, hauled out and skidded up on a truck and gingerly driven to the launching site where another marine railway was required for the reverse process. Some geniuses at the Syracuse Yacht and Country Club, aided by a blacksmith, built a trailer from a four-wheel Hudson

Cazenovia Lake will be filled with boats of all different sizes on July 9 and 10 for the CNYSA Annual Regatta. chassis with a six-inch gap in the rear thru which the keel could be coaxed. The trailer was backed down a sharply shelving beach into 4 ½ feet of water, where the launching crew in bathing suits struggled to hold the boat in exact position while the trailer was dragged out till the boat settled solidly in position. It was harder to back the 3,000 pound trailer plus boat out into 4 ½ feet of water to launch and both operations were tricky if there were waves of any size. However, the center of gravity was low and boats could be towed at good speed. Copies of these trailers were built here and at other clubs having Star fleets, and quickly spread all over the country. Meet Beauty. Beauty is a sweet five-yearold Black Lab who came in as a stray. Beauty can be a little shy at first but when she gets to know you, comes out of her shell beautifully. She has a lot of energy and would do well in an active home with older children. Beauty is also good with other dogs. If you think Beauty might fit well in your home, come up and meet her or call Wanderers Rest.

The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia will offer a celebration service of Easter at 10 a.m. on Sunday April 24. Easter is the most joyful time of the church year. Celebrated against the background of the shadows and darkness of Lent and Holy Week, this season truly becomes a living expression of the hope that God has brought into the world through the death and resurrection of Jesus. Probably the most traditional way of celebrating Easter is through special music and song. At the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, Music Director Catharine Wheat has planned a program of special music. The Prelude will be “Trumpet Duo by Corelli arranged by Wolff and “Trumpet Voluntary by Boyce arranged by Wolff. Guest trumpeters will include Samantha Kim-

by Brian Wren, music by Beethoven and Choral Setting by Hopson and “The Heavens Proclaim by Marcello arranged by Hopson. Both anthems will be accompanied by the trumpeters. The center of the service will be the message by The Reverend Dr. Steven R. Thomas Jr., “I Have Loved You. The Postlude will be “Trumpet Duet by Purcell, arranged by Wolff with organ and trumpet. If you are looking for an open and friendly place to celebrate Easter, Pastor Thomas invites you to worship at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia. Child Care and Sunday School are available during the service. For more information contact the church at 6553191 or visit the website at cazpres.org. Sharye Skinner is a publicist for the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia.

Make your own paper peat pots On a brisk spring day what could warm you better than a smoky fire and glass of smoky Irish whiskey. In Ireland and Scotland, peat fires dry malted barley before it’s made into Scotch or Irish whisky. Peat grows in bogs or wetlands and is drained harvested and cleaned before it is sold as soil conditioner Peat bogs are as fragile as rainforests and are home to rare wildlife, many found nowhere else on earth. Even though peat moss itself has very little nutrition for plants it helps lighten the soil and retains water so plants survive droughts better. Sterilized peat moss is often used for starting cuttings or seeds. Peat moss is familiar to gardeners as a soil additive and as material in biodegradable pots, called peat pots. Peat pots are filled with soil, seeded and then planted pot and all into the garden. The peat pot rots and the plant roots grow right through it with no transplant shock. In pursuance of a Judgement of Foreclosure and Sale entered in the above entitled action, and bearing date of March 25, 2011. I, Jennifer Basic, Esq., the undersigned, the Referee in said Judgement named, will sell in one (1) parcel, at Public Auction, at the First Floor Lobby, Madison County Office Building, in the Village of Wampsville, County of Madison, State of New York, on May 12, 2011 at 10:00 AM on that date, the premises described by said Judgement to be sold and therein described as follows: ALL THAT TRACT OR PARCEL OF LAND, situate in the Village of Cazenovia, County of Madison, State of New York and being more particularly bounded and described as follows: BEGINNING at a point in the northerly line of Williams Street at the division line between lands conveyed to David G. White by Robert J. Riedl on February 2, 1962 on the west and lands conveyed to Carol and Doris Ayer by The Cazenovia National Bank by deed recorded in the Madison County Clerk’s Office on October 19, 1910 in Book of Deeds 325 at page 593 on the east, said point being easterly a distance of 140 feet from the intersection of the northerly line of Williams Street with the easterly line of Farnham Street; thence N 31º 18’ 00”

Push the bottom of the drinking glass into the newspaper pot, crushing the folded bottom to flatten. This seals the bottom of your pot. Once the pots are filled with soil, the bottom will be secure. Now that you have your paper pots you can fill them with potting soil and plant your seeds. Try to time your seed sowing so that your plants will be ready to set out after the first frost. Cool weather crops like broccoli can be put out earlier than warm crops such as tomatoes and melons. When it’s time to transplant your seedlings into the garden, set the entire paper pot right into the planting hole. The newspaper pots will decompose. You want to be careful that you cover the entire newspaper pot with soil so that any exposed paper doesn’t act as a wick, drying the soil out. Make your own recycled newspaper planting pots, and you not only keep newspaper out of the landfills but you save the wild peat moss for better uses as wildlife bogs. Best of all, in the peat fires drying barley malt for a dram to chase away the cooler spring weather.
