According to “The Lookout Tribune” 2019 newsletter and the camp’s 2015 brochure, Camp Lookout was founded near Cazenovia in 1922 by the Madison County Tuberculosis Association to protect the health of children potentially susceptible to tuberculosis. In 1928, the camp moved to its long-term location south of Morrisville, where it continued to serve as a health camp for children. After the Tuberculosis Association declared the camp an unnecessary facility in 1968, the board of directors reorganized as a separate entity, incorporating Madison County Children’s Camp, Inc. as a private non-profit organization. By the early 1970s, Camp Lookout had moved to its current site, which was originally constructed in the 1930s by the Jewish Welfare Association of Syracuse.
Burton points to the camp’s move to Eaton as a pivotal step in the organization’s development.
The current campground includes a 900-foot waterfront activity area, 22 cabins for campers and staff members, a dining and/or recreation hall, an infirmary, and buildings for arts, crafts, nature, and athletics.
Today, Camp Lookout is on a mission to provide a program of fun, educational, and safe camp activities that will help children to thrive physically and emotionally, gain an understanding of their importance and place in the community, and develop the life skills necessary for positive, productive relationships with peers, family members, and other adults in their lives.
The camper program of activities features nature studies, arts and crafts, swimming and canoeing, individual and team sports, cooperative games and activities, and structured time for reading aloud and thoughtful discussions.
As an extension of its camper program, Camp Lookout also provides a Counselor-in Training (CIT) program for ages 14-16.
Additionally, under the guidance of Hospice of Central New York, the camp offers a bereavement weekend of support and activities for teenagers coping with the loss of a significant figure in their lives.
According to Burton, another significant change to the camp occurred when Matzke, who served as camp director from 1977 to 1988, incorporated “cabin time” into the daily program of activities. “Cabin time was set aside each day for the campers and their counselor to work on themes of safety, [team] building, and people making (self-esteem),” he said. Burton started working at Camp Lookout in maintenance in 1978 as a summer job while in college. Upon returning to camp, he got certified as a lifeguard and water safety instructor and eventually became the waterfront director and the assistant director of the camp. In 1990, he took over as camp director. “I have been fortunate to have been a teacher all these years, so I have been able to keep returning each summer, he said. “The experience continues to change me as person and a teacher.” According to Burton, some of the highlights of his experience at camp include seeing former campers return as parents to drop off their children, seeing campers become CITs, seeing former campers and CITs return as staff members, and seeing the camp continue to evolve and adapt throughout the years while retaining its core values and mission. “[It’s satisfying] to witness the transition of a child on Sunday coming to camp for the first time scared and apprehensive of staying here, to a child that does not want to leave on Friday and is already looking forward to their return the following summer,” Burton added. [I also enjoy] seeing what the staff and children ‘become’ as they move on from camp and how much credit they give to the camp experience as making them become who they are.” MCCC is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors who reside in communities served by the camp. Currently, the board includes the following Cazenovia residents: Redmond, Vice President Molly Byrnes Hagan, Randy Light, Lorie Riedl, Bill Tilison, and Winifred Greenberg (emeritus). Redmond, who has served on the board since 1987, was introduced to the camp through his wife’s family, whose involvement extends back to the 1960s. His mother-in-law, Barbara Wheler of Cazenovia, served as president from 1968 to 1975 and was active in the camp for many years prior. “Camp Lookout is a very special place that does a great job of serving the needs of children throughout Madison County,” said Redmond. “Today, those needs seem greater than ever. We have been very fortunate over the years to have a very dedicated and passionate staff who live Camp’s mission every day. . . Jean Holmes Woodworth, 72, Greenville, NC, died on April 9, 2022 at her home.
Jean, daughter of the late John and Helen Holmes, was born on January 16, 1950, in Oneida, N.Y.
She graduated from Oneida High School in 1968, and continued her education to become a registered home health care nurse. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, and reading.
In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2020.
She is survived by her daughter, Paula Coleman and husband William; sister, Ann Holmes and husband Brian Young; stepchildren Pamela Kirch, Kenneth Woodworth, Jr, Jeffery Woodworth and Eric Woodworth.
At Jean’s request no service will be held.

Jean Woodworth
At Cazenovia College there is a saying that the colelge creates experiences and friendships that last a lifetime. One alumna is showing that to be steadfastly true through a recent gift to the college which she made at the age of 99.
Jeanne Moore Cordts grew up locally, just a few miles west of the college on her family’s Pompey farm. In 1940, she was accepted to attend Elmira College to pursue a teaching education, but an unexpected change in her family’s finances upended that plan. A summer storm devastated the family’s apple crop. It was the income source the family had long planned as the means to pay for her college education.
Cordts wasn’t sure she’d be able to attend college at all when then-Cazenovia College President Burritt Harrington called on the family.
He offered Cordts a place in the class, a workstudy job, and a scholarship that would make college possible after all. She applied, was accepted, and graduated with her associate degree in 1942.
She greatly enjoyed the environment the college offered, her chance at the first step in her education, and an educational pursuit that kept her close to home yet allowed her to enjoy many campus activities and make lifelong friends.
Her days there were particularly enjoyable, she reflects, because she was new to dating then, but had a college boyfriend she really enjoyed studying with, going to dances with, and the pair often visited the family farm. They dated for several years, but World War II intervened, and they went separate ways.
Cordts went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees and pursued a doctorate as well, an endeavor that led to her meeting her future husband. As a young couple, they eventually moved to Maryland to take jobs with Frostburg State Teachers College.
Recently, reflecting on how the college president’s offer and act of generosity changed her life, Cordts decided to pay it forward. She visited campus in December with her son to present the college a gift of $25,000, funds that will support student scholarships. She plans to visit the college in May for a dedication ceremony for The Jeanne Moore Cordts ’42 Study at Witherill Library.
She has previously awarded a small scholarship, the Jeanne Moore Cordts ’42 Academic Excellence Scholarship, which is awarded to a returning student who has exhibited academic excellence by maintaining a minimum 3.25 grade point average. She and her husband also present a scholarship at Frostburg State , where both taught for years.
However, with this gift, Cordts said she wanted to do more. She has reflected on how all five children in her family, subsisting on a farmer’s income, consistently needed to work at jobs and work hard to apply for scholarships every year, in order for all to attend college. And Cazenovia College served her family well, she said. In addition to the doors her own scholarship and college pursuits opened, her father attended Cazenovia Seminary from 1910-1913, and an aunt and uncle attended the school as well. “I will always remember the kindness of the scholarship and workstudy offer extended by the president to aid in my college education, and how his visit quelled much of the financial and emotional damage from the hailstorm,” Cordts said. “As it turned out, I was very happy to go to Cazenovia at the time, and I’ve been very appreciative ever since because I was given a chance to do something that might never have happened otherwise, and as it was it changed the course of my life.”
Now, at the age of 99, Cordts said she reflects on the course her life has taken and is “mindful and appreciative of such individual and timely acts and their enduring effects… [and] my hope is that the Jeanne Moore Cordts ‘42 Scholarships prompt others to be generous and kind toward those in need, much as President Harrington did for me eight decades ago.”
The college is naming a study room in the Witherill Library in her honor and plans to display two upstate New York-themed original paintings created by her brother, the artist Roger Moore, as a tribute to commemorate the family’s involvement with the college.

Are golf slumps real? Dr. “Gio” says…”they are real”!
Everyone who plays the game of golf has had to deal with two ve letter words that have plagued us since the beginning of our golf careers. One is the word “ shank”, which usually is short lived and we will deal with in a future article. e other is the word “slump” which can a ect us for weeks, months or perhaps even years. e word “slump” does not discriminate between a 36 handicapper or a +5 handicap player (PGA Tour level). It is simply inevitable that we will eventually be tagged with the word “slump”. Rather than bore you with my personal “slumps” or amateur “slumps” in general, let’s investigate how the word “slump” a ects PGA Tour players and how they have had to deal with it. Dr. Gio Valiante is one of the most prominent sports psychologists in the world. He has worked with many of golf’s top players, including Matt Kuchar, Justin Rose, Sean O’Hair, Davis Love lll and Alexis ompson. Over the past decade his clients have won dozens of championships and he has become the winningest sport psychologist on the PGA Tour during that time. In 2010, e Golf Channel crowned Dr. Valiante… Guru of the Year. His book…Fearless Golf: Conquering the Mental Game, is a standard in golf psychology. He believes the breach in con dence is best cured by a return to the fundamentals and becoming “a student of oneself”. He describes a “slump” this way, “Suddenly, without warning, the once accurate drives nd more rough than fairway. e automatic 2-3 foot putts won’t fall…the hole repelling the ball like an irritating insect. Doubt creeps in. e water faucet of the mind shi s from a controllable drip to an unmanageable monsoon, cascading the brain with negativity. It’s insular”. Now that’s the most brilliant de nition of a “slump” I have ever read. Examples: * Brandt Snedeker - A er winning the 2015 AT&T, ending a 19 month winless drought said, “ e funny thing about golf is when you’re playing bad, you never think you’re going to play good and when your playing good, you never think you’re going to play bad. e game of golf is not easy. I don’t care who you are. Out here everyone’s had their down times. Even the best players in the world go through it. You just have to keep ghting.” * Davis Love lll - When he was in a slump, he remembered a simple mantra his father taught him….”Try less hard”. Tom Watson - Once in a rut, what’s a golfer to do? Tom used to preach that, “it’s how you rebound from adversity that measures a player”. Dr. Valiante says Tom was referring to “cognition and mental awareness”. * Jordon Speith - In 2015 Jordan was acclaimed as the Best Golfer for the Foreseeable Future. From 2017 to 2021 his erratic driver and shaky putter put him in a bad place. “It’s just one of those things where you’ve just got to block out the noise…stay the course…and believe in yourself. * How about Rory Mcllroy ranked # 1 in 2012. By 2013 he called his “Golf brain dead”. * Forgot this about Tiger - From 2013 until August 2015, he had more “missed cuts” (10) than made cuts (7). He also didn’t have a Top 10 nish. In 2004, Dr. Valiante completed a study where he interviewed 50 of the top golfers in the world. “One of the questions I asked was…When you look back on your career, when you nally found ‘it’, from darkness to light, is there a pattern to the problem solving? ALL OF THEM: Nick Price, David Toms, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Vijay Singh - they said yes, FUNDAMENTALS! ere was: GRIP, POSTURE AND BALL POSITION”. MORAL OF THE STORY: Valiante says, “ ink of the word discipline. What is the etymology, what is the genesis? It’s a student. Self discipline is being a student of oneself”. MY TAKEAWAY: PATIENCE & FUNDAMENTALS When you THINK you are in a “slump”, you might be able to recover. When you BELIEVE you are in a “slump”…. YOU ARE! County to host shredding day
The Madison County Department of Solid Waste is partnering with Proshred to provide a free residential document shredding event at the Buyea Road Residential Station this Spring.
Due to limitations in the truck’s capacity, residents are required to register prior to attending the event. Madison County residents can register online at MadisonCountyRecycles.ny.gov.
Spaces are limited and appointments will be on a first-come, first-served basis:
Saturday, May 14, 8 to 11 a.m. at Buyea Road Residential Station, 6666 Buyea Road, Canastota.
Residents can bring a maximum of four filing boxes of personal and confidential documents to be shredded. Material should be loose in boxes or paper bags and easily accessible in the back of the vehicle. Residents must stay in their vehicle at all times. Empty boxes will be returned to the vehicle; please do not put items in plastic bags.
Medical documents, bank information, tax records, and other paperwork containing account numbers or private details are ideal for drop off. Do not bring magazines, junk mail, phone books or photographs. Business waste will not be accepted.
“Many of our residents use our shred events as a safe and secure way to get rid of their confidential documents. We are excited to be hosting another event this Spring,” says Madison County Recycling Coordinator Kristin Welch. “The material collected gets shredded onsite and will be recycled into other paper products. Residents will be able to protect their personal information and, at the same time, help us rethink waste here in Madison County.”
In addition to the shred events, the department is working with LOJO Technology to host Saturday drop-offs for electronic waste.
Residents looking to recycle electronics such as computers and TVs can take their materials to LOJO Technology (634 Birchwood Drive, Oneida) year-round Monday through Friday from 8 to 3 p.m. or on the following 2022 Saturdays from 9to 1 p.m.: April 23, July 16 and October 1. Business waste will not be accepted. Madison County residents only.

County announces booster clinics
For those eligible, Madison County Health Department (MCDOH) will start offering second COVID-19 boosters.
Additional clinics through June are scheduled and appointments for all clinics are available by calling 315-3662361. Walk-ins are also welcome during clinic hours.
Who is eligible for a second booster dose?
Currently only adults age 50 and older and some immunocompromised individuals can now get a second booster at least 4 months after the first booster. If you are under 50 years of age, talk with your healthcare provider or talk to a Madison County public health nurse at 315-366-2361 to find out if you may be eligible for a second booster.
Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are available to choose from for second booster doses.
