Though he died 18 days before the Manlius Village Election, a New York State Supreme Court judge ruled last week that the late Arnold Ferguson’s vote still stands. Supreme Court Justice John C. Cherundolo ruled that Ferguson’s absentee ballot, one of eight, could stand because it wasn’t challenged before it was counted. “The ruling was simply that a protest had to be filed in person before the ballot was opened,”

FULL POWER: East Syracuse-Minoa sophomore Glen Maldonado, who established three state records during the March 19 New York State Powerlifting Championships. East Syracuse Minoa sophomore Glen Maldonado set three New York State age group and weight class records in the 2011 New York State Powerlifting Championships March 19. Maldonado benched 225 pounds, squatted 270 pounds and dead-lifted 430 pounds, all state records in the 148-pound weight class, for a combined total of 925 pounds. He is coached by Mike Eschbacher, a history teacher and coach at ESM. Maldonado plays football and wrestles, but he excels in the weight room. The NYS meet was hosted in Fayetteville by the 100 percent RAW Powerlifting Federation. Maldo-
nado will compete in the NY American Challenge national competition June 4 in Johnson City and attempt to set national records in his weight class. “It was a great experience and I love competing. I train every day after school and Mr. Eschbacher keeps me conditioned,” he said. “He put up great numbers,” Eschbacher said. “He has grown a lot in here. The only people in the competition with better numbers had 50-60 pounds on him. “It’s not instant gratification, it’s a process,” said ESM athletic trainer Mark Powell. “Glen works hard, he comes in every day and he has found his niche.”

Correction
In last week’s, “Apricot Lane: The road to fashion,” the construction company named in the article was incorrect. The correct construction company that owner Stephanie Chait hired to help design her store is Artesion Design & Construction, located in Jamesville. Additionally, Apricot Lane Fayetteville is located in the plaza next to Wegmans DeWitt, not in the village of Fayetteville. The Eagle Bulletin regrets these errors.

Community News Autopsy shows no criminal activity By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com A March 31 autopsy on 44-year-old Kerry Young, of East Syracuse, revealed no signs of criminal activity, according to state police. The cause and manner of death remain unknown; toxicology results are pending. Young was last seen around 4 p.m. March 25 at the Rite Aid on Kirkville Road in East Syracuse. She had told friends in a Facebook post earlier that day that she was planning to go hiking, said DeWitt Police Chief Eugene Conway. Her mother and her employer, Wolf Aviation, simultaneously reported Young missing on March 28. A trapper in the Adirondacks had first seen her vehicle March 26 but didn’t think too much of it until he saw

it again a couple days later. That’s when he reported the white Toyota RAV4 to the town of Inlet Police Department. It was parked on a seasonal road in an area not common to hikers, Conway said. DEC forest rangers led a Kerry Young search effort and discovered her body about one mile from her car in a stand of conifer trees. Young had recently been estranged from her husband, Robert Allen, of Manlius. She had no children. The New York State Police in Ray Brook is continuing an investigation, which at this time, has also not revealed any foul play surrounding her death.

Opinion Editorial
Local case makes national news
There’s a reason why certain stories grab national attention. The recent Manlius village election results and the subsequent court ruling that allowed a deceased man’s vote to count was picked up by the Associated Press. In turn, major newspapers from Seattle to Boston ran the article online. Why? CBSNews.com asked its readers a similar question. Certain topics reported in the news apparently qualify for, “What’s your take?” where the network lists four choices that readers can select. For the AP article, “Dead man’s vote stands in NY village election,” the choices were Hilarious, Bizarre, Pathetic and Fascinating. The Onondaga County Board of Elections has admitted the absentee ballot should not have been counted. It takes full responsibility for its system’s glitch. Employees were unaware of the man’s demise before it was too late, and the ballots had already been counted. Consequently, a disqualified ballot was treated equally as those that were valid. The national news picked up a fascinating article because it ties into an outdated law that is partly based on a 1937 case where you need to be present for a recount. Technology has advanced over the last 64 years. If a political candidate is aware of an ineligible vote, and attempts to identify the issue prior to a recanvass, that should count for something. Lawmakers: take this opportunity to review and amend laws to include modern advancements. Yes, this was an error on the part of the Board of Elections. But steps should be taken to prevent such mistakes from happening again and protect those who are living and directly affected.

Concertmaster’s last hurrah Violinist Andy Zaplatynsky retires from SSO; plays Bach concert Sunday in DeWitt Syracuse Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Andrew Zaplatynsky played his last concert with the orchestra Saturday, April 2, at Syracuse University’s Setnor Auditorium. After 30 years with the SSO, the first-chair violinist is retiring. Before the SSO hired him in 1981, Zaplatynsky was assistant concertmaster for the Detroit Symphony and associate concertmaster at the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. By happenstance, his retirement coincided with the suspension of the SSO’s golden anniversary season. After performing Saturday’s program of music by Rossini, Tchaikovsky and Beethoven conducted by Musical Director Dan Hege, the orchestra’s five dozen musicians and one dozen staffers were officially laid off Sunday. The SSO Board of Directors voted March 29 to suspend its 50th anniversary season after desperate fund-raising efforts left the orchestra more than $1 million short of its goal. Twenty concerts were Zaplatynsky canceled. Bach concerto Sunday Despite the SSO’s suspension, however, Zaplatynsky will continue to make music. He’ll solo in a performance of Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Major at 7 p.m. Sunday April 10, at the DeWitt Community Church, 3600 Erie Blvd. East, where he is a congregant. Guest conductor Travis Newton of LeMoyne College will lead members of the SSO in the Bach concerto written circa 1720 and in John Rutter’s “Requiem,” featuring the DCC Chancel Choir. Tickets cost $10; 445-0331; dewittchurch.org. “We’ve assembled some of the area’s finest talent for a program of indescribable beauty,” said Mark Sommers, DCC’s senior minister. “This concert speaks to the transformative power of music and to the vital role it plays it our community.” Besides being an articulate musician capable of turning written notes into tangible emotion, Zaplatynsky is also an avid and articulate writer and a self-described “news junkie.” His interests include social and economic policy, education, religion, the arts and ice cream. “I like to think that I am sensitive to the human condition,” he said, “but I’m skeptical of the schemes that politi-
Russ

cians propose to improve our lives.” Symphony budget struggles On his LinkedIn blog, “The compassionate skeptic,” he reflected on the financial travails of contemporary American symphony
orchestras. “I have played in five major orchestras over the span of a 40-year career,” Zaplatynsky wrote, “and I have never seen such a severe budget crisis all across the board for what has always been a fragile institution. Symphony budgets consist of three legs; ticket sales (covering no more than 40 percent of the budget), fund-raising and some government support (usually state or local). The current economic climate has seriously damaged all three sources of revenue.” Gingold’s words of wisdom The violinist was especially saddened by the Cleveland Orchestra’s budget struggle last year. “That orchestra is one of the truly legendary symphonic ensembles and this is a story that I thought I would never see,” Zaplatynsky wrote. “One of the greatest influences my development, both as a musician and a human being, was Josef Gingold, longtime concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra. “It was my privilege to study with Josef Gingold, a remarkable artist/teacher at Indiana University. Gingold was not only a great teacher, he was a truly wise human being… “One time he asked me, ‘Andy, do you know who was the greatest artist that I ever saw?’ I assumed that it would be someone like Jascha Heifetz or Fritz Kreisler. I was wrong. He said, ‘Joe Louis, the boxer.’ I was stunned. Prof. Gingold added, ‘He never made an unnecessary move.’ Hard times come again “Another unforgettable moment came when he shared with me the hardships of the Great Depression. He spoke of his good fortune of getting a steady job in a New York theater pit orchestra. At times, he would call in sick so that an unemployed colleague would get a call to substitute and make a few dollars. The stories were gripping enough, but what he said afterwards simply floored me…‘Andy, remember the world does not owe you a living.’” Gingold’s words of wisdom now echo in the minds of the 60-plus unemployed musicians of the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra. While Zaplatynsky shares his colleagues’ disappointment with the SSO suspension, after three decades with the orchestra, he’s ready to retire. “Thirty years is a long run,” he said. “I was blessed!”

Five weeks ago in this space, I offered the notion that March, and college basketball’s post-season, arrived with a large dose of uncertainty about it, that there was no super team, that the upcoming NCAA Tournament would surprise and confound us before it was done. Well, I turned out wrong. It wasn’t surprising or confounding. It was downright shocking. Okay, some people thought Connecticut would stay hot and that Kentucky would continue its late surge and get to Houston. But Butler again? Virginia Commonwealth? What is going on here? The Rams’ run to the Final Four, after being one of the last four teams in the field and forced to play an extra round, drew particular attention, as much for the vehement criticism that followed Shaka Smart and company everywhere. Right from the moment the selections were announced, commentators and columnists tripped over each other flogging VCU and griping that the likes of Virginia Tech and Colorado weren’t selected. They questioned the tournament committee’s intelligence, among other potshots. And even after the Rams’ extraordinary performance in the Dance, these same “experts” lined up again to take one more whack, begging the NCAA to

never, ever let the tournament expand again. Better to point fingers elsewhere Blackwell than admit you were wrong about VCU. All this has caused me to ponder Random the very nature of the tournament and Thoughts its components – power conferences, mid-majors, and everything in between. Then I would ask the question – how big should the tournament be? Then, once that is figured, who should get in? Maybe the 64-team model was perfect, but those days are gone. The current 68 is incomplete if the snubs are obvious. The much-discussed 96 doesn’t feel right, and though the late John Wooden would have loved it, inviting everyone into the field already happens, to some degree, with conference tournaments everywhere except the Ivy League. Eventually, the number I settled on was 80 teams. Before you say it’s too much, though, let me show you how we would get to that number to insure that (1) the best possible field takes the floor and (2) no more class time is missed, which the NCAA constantly carps about. Here goes: - Give the non-power conferences the option of discarding their tournaments (which don’t make much See Random thoughts, page 5

SSO, DeWitt Community Church concert series continues with program of Bach and Rutter April 10 The Syracuse Symphony Orchestra and DeWitt Community Church—celebrating their 50th and 200th anniversaries, respectively—continue their joint concert series with a springtime program at 7 p.m. Sunday April 10 in the sanctuary of DCC, 3600 Erie Blvd. in DeWitt. Guest conductor Travis Newton of LeMoyne College will lead SSO members in Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E Major, BWV 1042, featuring SSO concertmaster Andrew Zaplatynsky, and in John Rutter’s “Requiem, featuring soloists and the DCC Chancel Choir. Tickets are $10. For more information, call DCC at 4450331, or visit dewittchurch.org. In addition, Dewitt Comunity Church has decided to offer half price admission to our concert, for those SSO ticket holders who have tickets for future cancelled SSO concerts. SSO ticket holders simply present their
ticket for a future cancelled SSO concert at our admission table at the time of the concert. “This concert is arguably the high-water mark of our musical season, said Mark Sommers, DCC’s senior minister. “We have assembled some of the area’s finest talent for a program of indescribable beauty. This concert, and the series, in general, speaks to the transformative power of music and to the vital role it plays it our community. The SSO and DCC have a long shared history. In addition to performing at DCC, the SSO has often rehearsed there. Robert Allen, SSO’s education manager and ensemble manager, recalls many instances during the 1980s and 1990s when scheduling conflicts with Mulroy Civic Center led to the orchestra needing an alternate rehearsal location. “We have utilized the DCC gymnasium as a rehearsal space
for many years, he said. “The church has been a life-saver for us. Allen is DCC’s former music minister. The series concludes with a free outdoor concert (weather permitting) by the SSO Percussion Ensemble at 7 p.m. Monday July 25. About Newton Conductor and violinist, Newton has served in various capacities with the SSO, including guest conductor, and is currently interim director of music at LeMoyne College, where he conducts the LeMoyne College Chamber Orchestra. He has performed and conducted more than 500 performances of Broadway musicals across the U.S. and Canada.

money anyway) and just send the regular-season champion. Then protect their place in the tournament, even if it’s a no. 17 through 20 seed. - Big or small, every regular-season conference champion goes into the main field. Most likely, a Big East, ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12 or SEC champ would be a no. 1 to no. 8 seed anyway. That rewards the regular season. - In all, 48 teams would be protected – the top eight seeds in each region, with all the major conference champions and top at-large teams, plus the champions of the 16 lowest-ranked conferences that, in tournaments past, never had better than a 13 seed. - Then, take the 32 remaining teams, all of them at-large selections by the tournament committee, and play 16 games Tuesday and Wednesday, rather than the “First Four we saw this year. Make them earn their place in the field.
To save time and travel, use the same sites as the next two rounds Thursday through Sunday. Under this system, VCU would not have to justify their place in the field. For all you Syracuse fans, the Orange, instead of getting snubbed in 2007 and ’08, would have made it, with a chance to play their way in. All possible snubs, from power conferences or mid-majors, would get their chance, too. And TBS, TNT and TruTV would be glad to telecast all of them as the appetizer for the main event, once it’s pared down to 64. In short, it’s an old-fashioned compromise between those who say that having 64 teams is the ideal format (because of bracket pools, no doubt) and those, like Jim Boeheim, that insist on expansion because, among other things, coaches get canned for not making the Dance.

With nearly 350 teams in Division I basketball, even an expansion to 80 would still mean that less than 25 percent of the schools get in. That’s less than the NBA, NHL or NFL playoffs, about the same as Major League Baseball, and far less than the bloated college football system where more than half the Division I schools can flag a bowl bid, even if they’re 6-6. Five years ago, George Mason broke new trails when they stunned Michigan
State, North Carolina and Connecticut on their way to the Final Four. Butler did even better, going to the big show twice, and VCU’s stunning rise further confirms that college basketball, at least in late March, is no longer confined to the big names. Deal with it. The NCAA Tournament needs to deal with this changing reality, and make sure that the powers and dreamers alike have their chance at glory. Maybe, with an 80team field, that could happen.

F-M parents speak out for German, language program By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com About 75 parents attended last week’s Fayetteville-Manlius Board of Education meeting to voice their support for the district’s foreign language program – and their opposition to eliminating German from the middle schools. “If we cut German off at the knees, how will we ever go back? asked F-M resident Joanie Dominy at the March 28 meeting.

lic, he said. “We take this role very seriously. But [we] can’t always make the decision that they want us to make. The board could ask the administration to reconsider the staffing and program changes, Cucinotta said, but because there are no budgetary implications, the BOE has a limited role. Superintendent Corliss Kaiser said the administration is not reconsidering because the decision is based on enrollment. If in the future students show an increased interest in German, the district may offer the course in middle school again. Students at Eagle Hill and Wellwood will continue to have the option of enrolling in French, Latin or Spanish. The high school currently offers German through the fifth level, including AP and Honors.

The district administration is making changes to various courses with low enrollment. Classes below 14 students are not considered costeffective. Administrators emphasized there would be no budgetary impact from the German cuts. Both teachers will retain a full load. For instance, the instructor at Eagle Hill Middle School is being reassigned to teach another language in which he has certification. F-M BOE President John Cucinotta said the board has received numerous letters and emails, some from people in the audience, others from F-M graduates who benefited from taking German, one of four foreign languages offered in the district. “Certainly, we listen to the pub-

The Holy Cross School team was able to raise more than $14,000 for the St. Baldrick’s foundation. The school children went to Kitty Hoynes Restarant and had their hair shaved off March 27. These dollars will get into the hands of researchers who will hopefully find a cure for childhood cancers. A special thank you to the following team members who diligently raised funds and were brave enough to shave their heads for this great cause: Matt and Alex Becker, Matthew Boule, Dave and Hayden Braun, Christian Britschge, Owen and Bret Demetros, Andy Jakubowski, Matt and Joey Kosty, Zachary Medicis, Victor Mominey, Garrett Morgan, J.J. Hope springs eternal Chiefs return to Alliance Bank Stadium Wednesday April 13 By Russ Tarby With a baker’s dozen returning players, a new no-nonsense manager and several proven sluggers, the Syracuse Chiefs appear primed to make a run at the 2011 International League playoffs. The last time Syracuse made the IL playoffs was in 1998. The Chiefs last won their division in 1989, and last won the Governor’s Cup championship in 1976. The Chiefs are now in their third year as the top affiliate of the Washington Nationals. New manager Randy Knorr, who played with the Chiefs in the early-1990s before becoming a journeyman major-league catcher, expects pitching
to be the Chiefs’ strong suit. Hurlers with previous Triple-A service here include right-handers Collin Balester, Adam Carr, Yunesky Maya, J.D. Martin, Garrett Mock, Craig Stammen and Josh Wilkie along with lefties Ross Detwiler and Matt Chico. Righty Cole Kimball and lefty Tom Milone are up from Double-A Harrisburg, and southpaw Lee Hyde is here from the IL’s Gwinnett Braves. Catcher Jesus Flores missed all of last season with an arm injury, but Knorr hopes Flores can flourish in Triple-A after hitting .364 in Double-A in 2009. Back-up catcher Carlos Maldonado played for Syracuse last year, while third-stringer Jhonatan Solano played here two years ago. A newcomer, left-handed power-hitter Michael Aubrey, will DH and play some first base. Last year he knocked out 22 home runs, two triples and 25 doubles for the IL’s Norfolk Tides. Chiefs infielders include 21-year-old first baseman Chris Marrero, who hit 18 homers for Harris-

burg last year. Brian Bixler and Seth Bynum – who both played well here last year – will play the middle positions with Chris McConnell, and Alex Valdez will play third. Last season, McConnell and Valdez sweated it out in the Double-A Texas League. Returning outfielders include speedsters Roger Bernadina and Boomer Whiting as well as Corey Brown who played in the Pacific Coast League in 2010 and Jeff Frazier, who hit 25 home runs for the Toledo Mudhens. The Chiefs open the season at 3:05 p.m. April 7 in the Queen City against NY Mets’ farmhands the Buffalo Bisons. The hometown nine start swinging their bats at Alliance Bank Stadium at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, against the Pawtucket Red Sox. said incumbent trustee and candidate Marc Baum, who filed for Judiciary Intervention over the election results. “Email and phone call did not count. The court’s ruling was based in part on a Supreme Court case from 1937, which upheld the law. Baum said had he known his presence was necessary to object a ballot; he would have been at the recount. Ferguson was the father of Nancy Pfeiffer, another candidate who ran and won a seat on the board. When a person dies, his or her vote automatically becomes disqualified, but in this particular case, the Onondaga County Board of Elections did not catch the error in time to remove it from the recanvass held the next morning. After learning Ferguson’s ballot was in the mix, Baum, who was defeated by one vote to incumbent trustee Harold Hopkinson, sent an email to the BOE the evening of March 15, Election Day. He also made a follow-up phone call the next morning, but to no avail. Commissioner Helen Kiggins said his email was not opened and read until after the recanvass took place, which meant there was no way to know whose vote was whose. In response to the way the results were handled, Baum asked the state supreme court

The Associated Press picked up the story April 1 and the case has since attracted national attention on news sources like CBSNews.com, WashingtonPost.com and newsday.com. “It seems to be in every major newspaper and I am receiving lots of emails and phone calls from supporters, Baum said. “I appreciate the people who supported me in the campaign, and I believe it goes to show that every vote really does count. Baum said he also believes it’s time to consider consolidation as only 15 percent of registered voters went to the polls. “It would take 311 signatures on a petition to force the village to go to a public vote on whether or not to dissolve the village. I am surprised that in a hotly contested race such as this, there [weren’t] more people who came out to vote. As for the outcome, he said his opponent Hopkinson has served the community well for over 52 years and is certain he will continue to do so. ESM baseball routs Fowler; J-D F-M boys start 2falls to Mexico 0, give Kenneally By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com
The East Syracuse-Minoa baseball team opened against Fowler on its home field last Wednesday afternoon and piled up plenty of runs in a 16-2 rout of the Falcons. Striking first, the Spartans scored three times in the bottom of the second. After Fowler cut it to 3-2, ESM got a run in the fourth, then broke things open by batting around in the fifth and recording eight runs, adding four runs in the sixth.
Joe Greco had a team-best three RBIs as part of a 16-hit attack. Jeremy Fletcher, Steve Loder, Casey Sullivan, Matt LeGro and Brendan O’Donnell each scored twice as Sullivan and Mike Para produced two RBIs apiece. Para also was the winning pitcher in a three-inning stint as Fletcher, who had three hits, tossed three innings of relief and Greco saw mound time, too. As this went on, Jamesville-DeWitt also opened at home, against Mexico, and rallied in the late stages before falling to the Tigers 5-3 in eight innings. The Rams trailed, 2-0, when it finally got on the board with a run in
the bottom of the sixth inning. Mexico restored the margin, only to see J-D come back and tie it, 3-3, with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Dan Canfield and Chris Lenish were credited with RBIs as Tyler Kirwan, Justin Marzella and Eric Thompson scored the runs. Unfazed, the Tigers struck twice in the top of the eighth, then got the last three outs. J-D lost despite the fact that Marzella and Max Bregende allowed just five hits between them. On Mexico’s side, Tyler Dunsmoor and John Beck combined to strike out 12 Rams hitters.
J-D softball edges ESM, 2-1 By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com In recent years, the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa softball teams have grown familiar with each other since the Spartans entered the OHSL Freedom division. So it only figured that the two sides opened the 2011 season against each other last Wednesday at Lyndon Field,
where the host Red Rams squeaked past the Spartans 2-1. Given the chilly conditions, it wasn’t too surprising that runs would be sparse. J-D went ahead 1-0 in the first inning and, after ESM tied it in the top of the third (Nikki Cassella earning the RBI after Haley Wodarczyk tripled), the Rams went back ahead in the bottom of that frame. From there, two J-D pitchers, Meghan Engstrom and Kerri Keeler,
combined to blank the Spartans. Engstrom went four innings for the win and Engstrom tossed three shutout innings, the pair combining for 12 strikeouts against three walks and four hits allowed. ESM’s Julie Maselli pitched a complete game, but took the loss. Rachel Honis and Mary Young drove in J-D’s runs as Ashley Thompson had a triple of her own.
ESM girls lax starts 3-0; J-D handles Henninger By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@ eaglenewsonline.com In their opening week on the field, the East Syracuse-Minoa and Jamesville-Dewitt girls lacrosse teams both found the win column – and the Spartans didn’t stop until it had a 3-0 start. 300th win By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@ eaglenewsonline.com
Before it could set off on another championship quest in 2011, the FayettevilleManlius boys lacrosse team first had to take care of an important milestone. When the Hornets beat Watertown IHC 16-2 Saturday at Corcoran High School’s turf, it marked the 300th career victory of head coach Chris Kenneally. In all, Kenneally has spent 27 years in the F-M program – 16 as an assistant to Tom Hall, then 11 as head coach. This followed a 10-year stint as a coach at Bishop Ludden. So no one knows better than Kenneally the Hornets’ long frustration in seeking a Section III Class A championship. Despite having a series of top-notch teams and college-bound talent, F-M has not claimed a sectional title since 1993. Even as a top seed in the 2010 sectional playoffs, the Hornets could not reach the title game, falling to Corcoran 13-10, in the semifinals, so the returning F-M players are bent on getting all the way to the top. Keneally’s 299th win came in last Wednesday’s opener
against Cortland, played at Nottingham High School’s turf, where the Hornets took over in the second quarter and beat the Purple Tigers 16-8. Through one period, the game was a 3-3 tie. Then, led by Kevin Lux, Ari Waffle and Jim Krizman, the Hornets outscored Cortland 6-2 the rest of the half and pulled further away in the last two periods. Overall, Lux, a sophomore making an immediate impact in his varsity debut, had six goals. Krizman often fed him the passes, earning five assists to go with his pair of tallies as Waffle, who is on his way to Jacksonville University in the fall, had three goals and one assist. Ryan Simmons also managed a three-goal hat trick, while Joe DeSantis and Chris Anklin each had one goal and one assist. Basile played most of the game in the net, finishing with 10 saves before Matt Wells saw some late duty. Three days later, the Hornets dealt with Watertown IHC and, on the way to getting that 300th win for Kenneally, cleaned up the part about slow starts. It was 7-1 before the first quarter was done, 10-2 by See F-M lax, page 10

F-M girls, CBA boys lacrosse open with defeats By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com A slew of new faces dot the Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse team’s lineup as the 2011 season gets underway. No less than eight senior starters – Carline Trpcevski, Chrissy Primo, Jess Lavelle, Meg Helmer, Taylor Robinson, Sarah Lux, Kieley O’Connor-Chapman and Kelly Perry – departed from a side that went 14-4 came within inches of the 2010 Section III Class A title before falling to West Genesee 14-13 in the championship game. Given the turnover in the lineup, perhaps it wasn’t surprising that, in last Saturday’s season opener, F-M took an 18-14 defeat to Section II power Guilderland.
Making the long trip from the Albany area, Guilderland tore through the Hornets’ new-look defense in the first half, leaving F-M behind 12-6. Though it tried to rally in the second half, the Hornets could not make up the entire deficit, despite Mollie Caputo landing four goals and one assist and Kate Sipple gaining three goals and four assists. Lindsey Trachtenberg also had a three-goal hat trick as Morgan Same added two goals and one assist. Cara Esposito and Christina Kousmanidis landed single goals. Three nights earlier, the Christian Brothers Academy boys lacrosse team opened at Alibrandi Stadium with a 19-11 defeat to Cazenovia. After going 6-11 a season ago, the Brothers was looking for a way to get people’s attention – and beating a champi-
onship contender like the Lakers would suffice, especially after it played Cazenovia to a 5-5 first-half draw. However, the Lakers torched CBA for 10 goals in the third quarter to decide matters. In defeat, Joey Dalfo led the Brothers with five goals, while Cody Radziewicz managed two goals and four assists. Alex Liable found the net twice, with John Duby, Shane Murphy and Willie Walker getting the other goals. For Cazenovia, Joe Nardella had seven goals, with Connor Cannizzaro and Shane Donovan landing four goals apiece. Manlilus-Pebble Hill’s boys lacrosse team opened with a 14-13 overtime victory over Whitney Point where Ben Jaworski had six goals and one assist, while Aaron Glass and Tim Glass each scored three times. The Trojans then lost Saturday to Cazenovia 28-3.
J-D boys handle Homer; ESM romps past Fulton By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com A nice dilemma confronts the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team in 2011 – namely, how to top perfection. The Red Rams were flawless in 2010, going 21-0 and earning the state Class B championship for the second time in four years (and the third time overall) when it beat Garden City 11-5 for the crown. From that team, head coach Jamie Archer lost offensive threats Jake Bratek, Eric DeJohn and Cam Stone, plus defensive standouts Mac Feiner and Dima Bakrukov. However, a strong group is back, from goalie Dan DiStefano to Nick Firman on defense and, to lead the attack, Tim Edwards, Jordan Evans, Alex Hatem and Deke Burns.
For its opening assignment of the season, J-D went to Homer last Friday night and used a long shutout streak in the middle stages to get away and beat the Trojans 12-6. Both sides found success on the offensive side in the first quarter, and the Rams only led 4-3. However, over the next two periods Firman and his back-line mates clamped down, blanking Homer as DiStefano earned most of his eight saves during this time. Edwards flourished, too, scoring five times and adding an assist. Burns stepped up with a three-goal hat trick as Evans and McLaren Brady each had one goal and one assist. Hatem and Ali Akyuz both scored, too. One main Class B rival for the Red Rams is, of course, East Syracuse-Minoa, whom it beat in last year’s sectional semifinals. ESM began its season Saturday at home and
delivered a 12-4 victory over the Fulton Red Raiders. This one got decided early, as the Spartans steadily worked its way to a 9-1 halftime lead. By himself, Garrett Smith outscored Fulton, leading ESM as he got six goals and one assist. In support of Smith, Sean Dooling, Emile Frigon, Jesse Perry, Jeff Koch, Nic Capriotti and Dean Squires landed one goal apiece. Dan MacDougall added an assist. Splitting time in the net, Connor McEachron and Alex Krawec made six total saves. ESM plays its first five games at home, including three this week as New Hartford and Whitesboro visit before a Saturday showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius. J-D goes to Fulton Thursday before Saturday’s home opener against Chittenango.
Community
It’s a play date
On Sunday April 10, the East Area Family YMCA is encouraging all kids and parents in the community to come for a play date and commit to being active every day. It’s all part of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day – the nation’s largest health day for families. This free event will take place at the East Area Family YMCA from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include games and events, local health and wellness vendors, the Healthy Kids Corner and local police and fire departments. As a leading non-profit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when one in three children in the United States are overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever. “At the East Area Family YMCA, we know that
YMCA’s Healthy Kids day aims to get families moving through play parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,â€? said Amanda Coyle, the East Y’s family director. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements – be active and have fun.â€? As part of Healthy Kids Day, the Y encourages families to make play dates every day as a simple way to become healthier, more active, and connected. The Y recommends five simple activities families can do to play together: • Schedule a game night: Play games with the kids that incorporate physical activity, such as charades. • Dance, Dance: Turn on your favorite party music and dance! Make this activity more fun with a dance contest! • Go Riding: Find a new bike path or park for a fun afternoon outdoors; grab your helmets and go rollerblading or bike riding.
• Channel Your Inner Youth: Remember playing hopscotch, jump rope, Simon Says, or freeze tag as a kid? Teach your favorite childhood games to your kids and play them together. • Play Outside: Visit your neighborhood park or camp out in your backyard for some outdoor fun. Get everyone moving with fun sports like soccer, basketball, or baseball. Healthy Kids Day will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, with more than 700,000 families expected to attend this year. YMCA Healthy Kids Day activities for kids and grown-ups will include outdoor running events, make and take art projects, family sports and games, the Healthy Kids Corner and water slide races. Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts can also work towards or earn badges here that day. Additional resources will be available to help kids and families achieve their greatest potential, from building better bonds together to improving their physical health and nutritional well-being.

saw the Spartans move in front 7-4, but its defense tightened in the late going, allowing ESM to get some breathing space as its attack remained potent. DeVona scored four times, often fed by Vlassis, who had four assists to go with her lone goal. Anderalli, Davis and Dam Dooling each had two goals, with Sarah Steinberg and Katie Hall also converting. This strong opening week for ESM concluded Saturday with a visit to Mexico and another impressive effort as it tamed the Tigers 19-8. All through the first half, the Spartans’ defense overwhelmed Mexico, not stopping until it had gained a 12-3 edge. Vlassis, with four goals and one assist, led the way as Nikki DeVona, McEachron and Toole put up three goals apiece. Anderalli had two goals and one assist, with Davis getting two goals and one assist. Haley DeVona and Liz Walsh added goals as Hall added a pair of assists and Kathleen O’Connor also

had an assist. J-D also had to overcome a slow start in last Tuesday’s game at Henninger/Nottingham before prevailing by a score of 9-7. Since Henninger/Nottingham had already played (and beaten Watertown IHC 6-5 on March 26), it had a better game rhythm in the early going. J-D had a hard time winning draws, and at halftime it trailed 5-1. Everything changed in the second half, though. The Rams started winning possession, which led to constant attacks – and plenty of goals, too, as it outscored Henninger/Nottingham 8-2 the rest of the way. Taylor Bierwagen, with two goals and two assists, led a balanced attack where Lauren Beville and Taylor Fallon also had two-goal outings. Lauren Swan put up a goal and two assists as Caitlin Cariseo and Kayleigh Cavanaugh also converted.

halftime, and if that wasn’t enough, the Hornets’ defense pitched a second-half shutout, even with the game well under control. Waffle led with five goals and one assist, but Lux was close behind, scoring four times to give him 10 for the week. Simmons and Anklin both found the net twice, while Krizman notched a goal and two assists. Dave Hajduk and Derek Andrake had single goals in the late going. watched and protected from any contact with water from the moment of harvest on, until the matzahs are ready to be kneaded into dough and baked. The wheat is only harvested on a sunny day and before it is ground into flour, the mill stones are cleaned thoroughly. Special care is taken during its transportation, and when it gets to the bakery the flour is kept in a special dry room. The rationale is that any contact with water before the flour is ready to be mixed and made into dough could cause leavening in the wheat and disqualify its use for Passover. In ordinary matzah, the wheat is watched only from the time of milling. These shmura matzahs are baked entirely by hand under intense scrutiny. The Model Matzah Bakery is made possible by a grant from the Syracuse Jewish federation.

Science teachers eligible to compete for Honeywell scholarships Audubon Society to provide unique learning opportunities to help the area’s best teachers excite and inspire a new generation of scientists in their classrooms. It is part of an overall initiative to recognize the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics education and to educate youth about habitat and conservation. The program is scheduled for Aug. 8 through 12 and combines classroom
instruction with diverse outdoor experiences at sites throughout the Onondaga Lake watershed. The curriculum also is designed to complement the adoption of Onondaga Lake as an Important Bird Area as recognized by the National Audubon Society. Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education provides inquir y-based techniques for teachers to learn about habitats and ecosystems, water quality, birds, native plants and sustainability. The program is aligned with New York State’s standards in math, science and technology, and is adaptable to classrooms. “Audubon is excited to partner with Honeywell, a corporate leader in STEM learning initiatives, to provide educators with techniques that will inspire their students to learn about natural systems and the environment, said Frank Moses, Director of the Montezuma Audubon Center. “The real-world science lessons in the program will inspire students to take a more active role in preserving their environment and encourage them to become environmental stewards in their own communities.   Last summer, 15 teachers from 10 different Onondaga County school districts completed the week-long exploration of the watershed. They examined freshwater and field habitats, explored streams and marshes with environmen-
tal leaders and naturalists, and took a boat tour of Onondaga Lake. “The Honeywell Institute provided a learning experience that directly aligns with our science curriculum, said Jennifer Cohen, a sixth-grade science teacher at Long Branch Elementary School in Liverpool. “The students are excited because they already know about the lake and they take ownership in knowing they are learning about science through our local community. Also, the materials we received were very valuable. We use the statistical information to read tables and interpret data. Honeywell Institute for Ecosystems Education offers participants opportunities to model lessons and learn new teaching techniques, gain practice using field study instruments and technologies, and discover creative ways to integrate natural system studies into their existing curriculum. All teachers who are accepted into the program will receive a full scholarship from Honeywell to attend the five-day program. For more information or to apply, go to honeywell.com/Citizenship/Pages/ habitat-conservation.aspx and click on the Central New York link. Additional questions should be directed to the Montezuma Audubon Center at 315365-3588 or clajewski@audubon.org. Applications are due by June 17.

Grace Bible House Church relocates By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com For its first 55 years, Grace Bible House Church was known as the First Baptist Church of East Syracuse at 100 Eisenhower Ave. Now its moved further east to Cazenovia, where it occupies a 4,000 square-foot colonial style home on six and a half acres of land. “Occupying a fairly large facility with a smaller congregation, we decided to streamline our facility and put a greater emphasis on ministry rather than maintenance, said Pastor Mark Graham, who has served GBC for 13 years. “The church house concept is out of the New Testament itself and accommodates a relational family-style environment where mutual discipleship and accountability grow more naturally.
Grace Bible House Church moved from East Syracuse to Cazenovia primarily for its members, who come mostly from DeWitt, Fayetteville and Manlius communities, and its pastoral staff, who are employed in Fayetteville and Manlius. The new home, located at 5034 Temperance Hill Road, serves as the residence for Graham and provides rooms for Bible studies, fellowship, office work and counseling opportunities. “The primary objective of our ministry is to teach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and sacred scriptures with the utmost care and accuracy, Graham said. Service times are 10:30 a.m. and noon on Sundays, followed by lunch and Bible Study. Nursery care is available. For more information, call 815-5019.

Syracuse Home specializes in short-term rehabilitation In a blink of an eye, Michelle Rurka’s life changed forever. On her way to visit her family in New Jersey, she hit a patch of black ice on the highway and lost control of her car. It flipped several times before resting on its roof. The impact of the crash broke her back. Once stabilized in the hospital weeks later, she chose Syracuse Home’s short-term rehabilitation to help her recover from her injuries. “I am so grateful for the care I received at Syracuse Home. The therapists are welltrained, supportive and committed to helping us return home to our families,” says Rurka. Syracuse Home’s comprehensive short-term rehabilitation has rapidly become one of Central New York’s most recommende d prog rams.
Short-term rehabilitation at Syracuse Home focuses on recovery by helping individuals build the strength, independence and confidence they need to return home. The professional rehabilitation therapies staff works with individuals with orthopedic conditions resulting from elective surgeries like hip or knee replacements or injuries such as multiple fractures resulting from accidents. Physical and occupational therapies develop skills that enable residents to lead independent lives. “After my accident, I never thought I would walk again. Within three weeks of rehabilitation, I returned home. Words cannot describe how wonderful it felt to actually walk into my home. I can’t say enough about my
experience. The nurses went above and beyond their normal duties to address my individual needs. I highly recommend Syracuse Home for short-term rehabilitation,” says Rurka. Occupational therapies address muscle strength, range of motion, plus cognitive and visual skills that enhance every day activities. When appropriate, speech therapies address treatment and management of communication impairments as well as swallowing disorders. Located on a beautiful 150-acre campus in historic Baldwinsville, Syracuse Home offers a full continuum of healthcare programs and services for seniors including; independent retirement living, assisted living, memory care, respite care, skilled nursing care and short-term reha-

HOA is comprised of 16 physicians, 22 nurse practitioners/physician assistants and 200-plus clinical personnel in four locations including one in Rome and three in the greater Syracuse area. They are privileged to have patients entrust them with their medical care and allow them to be an integral part of their healthcare journey. The CyberKnife tackles tumors throughout the body including the spine, brain, lung and prostate – even those deemed inoperable. Because it’s so effective, patients need far fewer treatments. HOA also offers in-house CT imaging, giving their treatment teams quick, desktop access to each patient’s cumulative imaging, so physicians can closely monitor progress. In addition,
their certified laboratory offers extensive on-site testing for exceptional results and patient convenience. What makes their practice truly special is that everyone at HOA is “united in spirit” – a spirit that is filled with possibilities and hope. They believe that effective medical treatment is not only about healing their patients’ physical illnesses, but also about promoting their emotional, mental and spiritual well being. source that helps to improve the examiner’s ability to identify abnormalities that may have been missed under normal lighting. Your dental professional will conduct the exam as follows: 1. First your dental professional will exami=ne your mouth and look for any abnormalities. 2. Next, you will rinse with a solution that will help your dental professional conduct the ViziLite Plus exam. 3. Then, your dental professional will examine your mouth using ViziLite. 4. If a suspicious lesion is detected, it will be marked with TBlue, a blue dye, and documented. What will my dentist see? Most of the time your dental professional will conduct a thorough oral cancer screening examination that includes ViziLite Plus, and will see that everything looks completely normal. That is good news! However, there may be times when your dental professional identifies something that looks abnormal. At that point, your dental professional will use their expertise and may ask you to come back in a few weeks to follow up, or may refer you to an oral surgeon for a biopsy. One American dies every hour from oral cancer. The typical risk factors for oral cancer such as tobacco use and chronic alcohol consumption may be commonly known, however a new risk factor called HPV is now chang-
ing the face of oral cancer. HPV has long been known to cause cervical cancer in women and recent studies show that it may play a role in more than 25 percent of oral cancer cases. The human papilloma virus is a common sexually transmitted virus that is thought to be causing oral cancer in an increasingly younger patient population. Few people, if any, even know they have it. That is why your dentist recommends a potentially life saving screening exam called ViziLite Plus. During April, this $50 procedure will be offered at $25 in recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness Month. If you are looking for a dental provider, Dr. Shapero is featuring a New Patient Special. Receive a free exam with cleaning and X-ray. Offer ends July 1, 2011. Call 625-6643 today for these services and ask about their spring specials on in-office bleaching and adult braces. In order to be more available, the office is now open until 7 p.m. Tuesdays. They are also a par provider for Delta Dental PPO, Delta Premier and DeCare. Local employers include Wegmans, Anheuser-Busch, AARP, Erie Insurance, Lockheed Martin Corp., M&T Bank, New York Power Authority, Clifton Springs Cavalier Transportation and others. The practice of Dr. Suzanne Shapero is located at 1 Charlotte St. in the heart of Baldwinsville. Dr. Shapero and her staff look forward to meeting new patients.

navigate our own internal changes while also navigating all the various changes in the economy and banking regulations,” Russo said. “Many small banks face a merger at the time executive and senior officers retire,” she said. “The continued viability of Seneca Federal is not only a tribute to the board, but also to the retiring officers and employees who provided others with the knowledge and skill sets necessary for the association to carry on for many more decades under the thrift charter and to this end we are very thankful to be given this opportunity entrusted to us.” Looking ahead to 2011, management remains committed to maintaining a steady course in carrying out the responsibilities entrusted to them by the board, as the merger between the Office of Thrift Supervision and the Office of The Comptroller of the Currency occurs in July of this year. “The extensive regulatory changes brought about by the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the passing of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act in 2010 marks yet another transformation in banking activities, which can stretch the resources of small community banks,” points out Russo. Reform will be far reaching into such areas as Federal consumer protection law compliance, state law compliance, and Homeland Security Regulations. The regulatory burden is always disproportionately heavy for reputable lenders such as Seneca Federal as attempts are made by the federal government to police the dishonest few. Russo is emphatic that the association will continue an ongoing commitment to educate and train its employees regarding new and changing compliance regulations to better assist both customers and noncustomers. She believes that it’s reassuring for members to know our officers and employees have the capability and initiative to successfully implement programs required by the complex regulatory environment. This ability is just as necessary as financial performance in keeping community banks viable as dictated by the federal examination process.

CANCER BEWARE “I had cancer. Cancer never had me.” Yesterday, I got out my fishing rod. I couldn’t help thinking of everyone at HOA. It was last spring when I found out. I was overwhelmed, distraught – and scared. I thought my fishing days were over. Then I went to HOA. My medical team all said, “We have the technology to fight this thing!” and showed me the CyberKnife. It sounded scary, but when I learned how it worked and how safe it was, I had hope for the first time. Your attitude really inspired me, your staff always encouraged me and your plan of action worked. I may have had cancer, but cancer never had me. Today, my kids and I are heading up to the lake.

Steve Miles retires as Manlius recreation director By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com
Support a grass roots organization, Kellish Hill Music Farm. Fundraiser event is set from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday May 6 and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday May 7. Cost for Friday or Saturday night: $10; both days $15. Proceeds go to necessary improvements for the first annual American Music Festival to be held mid-July at Kellish Hill Farm. For more information, check out rhbamericana.com. 3192 Pompey Center Road.
“He [k nows] t he v a lu e of recreation in a person’s life no matter what their age.” Miles is also a true professional, she added. He s e r ve d on b ot h t h e C ent ra l Ne w Yo r k R e c r e Miles ation and Park Society and the New York State Recreation and Park Society, and co-chaired two of the NYSRPS conferences. “Steve [has] always [been] someone to look up to and go to with any questions because, for more than 29 years, he worked to keep the residents happy and proud to be living in the town of Manlius,” she said. Re cre at ion Sup er vis or Kr ist ine Zingaro is thankful to have worked with Miles for more than a decade. “This was my first job in municipal recreation,” she said. “Steve made it a great place to work, with his knowledge of recreation, the town of Manlius and his love for what he did.” Miles extends a huge thank you to his staff, Kenyon, Zingaro and secretary Jackie Maher: “Without such a great team, we would not be nearly as successful.” His retirement plans include a few months relaxing at home before seeking part-time employment. “I like to stay busy and productive,” he said. “Putting a smile on someone else’s face is something we should all try to do everyday.”
08520
After almost 30 years employed as the town of Manlius recreation director, Steve Miles has retired. He’ll miss it all, he said about his longtime career, from supervising special events, sports camps and staff to working with all aspects of the budget. The best part of the job, though, was the ability to be creative and see firsthand the fruits of their labor. “It’s great to see the smiles on both children and adults when they are enjoying one of our programs,” he said. Under Miles’ leadership, the department accomplished long-lasting, successful events such as the community center haunted house that ran from 2000 to 2007. The Learn to Swim program held at Green Lakes State Park offers opportunities for area youth to learn swim ming skills in a beach front setting. The annual summer musical is a consistent hit, too. “There is some amazing talent in this town,” said Miles, whose last day was Dec. 28. “And I don’t know of another municipality that offers this type of theater event. It’s something we’re very proud of.” In the 1980’s, the department expanded one small summer playground that served about 40 children at Fremont Elementary School, to three sites throughout town. Now, more than 500 children each year enjoy these spots. Menahem Pressler to perform April 10 Menahem Pressler, co-founder and for more than fifty years pianist of the legendary Beaux Arts Trio, will perform a solo recital in Syracuse on Sunday, April 10th at 2 p.m. The concert will take place at Setnor Auditorium on the Syracuse University campus. Co-sponsors are Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music and the Syracuse University School of Music. Four days before his recital in Syracuse, Pressler will be in Finland to receive one of the music world’s most coveted honors: a Lifetime Achievement Award given by a jury of international music critics. It is the latest of many honors heaped on the distinguished pianist, among them honorary doctorates at several universities, an invitation to dine at the White House, and Germany’s highest honor, the Iron Cross, bestowed on him in 2005 in his native town of Magdeburg, Germany, from which his family had fled to Palestine seventy years earlier, just before the outbreak of World War II. It was as a solo pianist that Pressler began his career, winning a prestigious Debussy competition in1946, and appearing with eminent orchestras such as the Philadelphia under Eugene Ormandy. But his career changed course after he received a life-altering phone call from
cellist Bernard Greenhouse asking if he would be interested joining him in a piano trio. That was the beginning of the Beaux Arts Trio, one of the most long-lived and celebrated ensembles of our time. For more than fifty years, the Beaux Arts performed some hundred concerts annually, and recorded the entire repertoire for piano trio. There were several personnel changes through the years, but Menahem Pressler remained a constant. The Beaux Arts Trio performed their final concert as an ensemble in 2008, but Pressler – at age 87 – is still going strong as soloist and teacher. For his Syracuse program he has chosen three works of extraordinary depth and richness: Beethoven: Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major, Opus 110 Debussy: Estampes Schubert: Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960 General admission tickets will be available at the door at $25, students $10. Senior and disabled parking will be available on campus; other parking at the Irving Garage. For information visit syracusefriendsofchambermusic. org, email sfcm00@gmail.com, or phone 682-7720.

Opinion
For the next few months—April 7 through July 2—Syracuse will be proudly hosting the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Women’s Championships. The Women’s Championships is the world’s largest sporting event for women. This year’s event is expected to bring 30,000 participants to Syracuse competing for a $2 million pot. What is great about a tournament of this caliber is that the 30,000 participants bring their families and friends. With that said, more than 60,000 people will need hotel rooms, places to dine and sights to see. Syracuse has a lot to offer with great restaurants, museums, sporting events, parks and shopping. This event has the potential to bring $40 million in travel spending to the area. Each of the more than 5,600 teams will be in town for about three or four days. Fourteen local hotels are participating in a room block and are expecting a seven to nine percent increase in occupancy. Estimates for the Room Occupancy Tax (ROT) are projected to be over $400,000. The ROT tax helps fund events like the Jazz Fest and arts organizations in order to avoid using taxpayer funds. The sales tax estimates from this event are projected to be over $1,500,000. The increases in sales tax revenues can be used directly to offset property taxes this fall. Events like the USBC Championships are a real boost to our local economy, and ideally will encourage more events in the future. Kathy Rapp represents the Fifth District, which consists of the towns of Salina, Clay and DeWitt.
