The fate of the recommended joint fire district in the town of Manlius may rest in the hands of a community-driven Implementation Advisory Committee. For the second time in two weeks, the public had the opportunity April 14 to listen to a consultant provide a “stepping stone” toward combining the fire departments in the villages of Fayetteville, Manlius and Minoa, the Kirkville Fire District and northern Pompey. A day earlier, the Manlius Town Board resolved to move forward with the second phase of the management and operations study that includes the formation of the advisory commitSee Study, page 8
F-M school administrators reach compromise with middle school German program Eighth grade students will be offered chance to learn the language online By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com For the first time, the Fayetteville-Manlius School District will offer eighth grade students the opportunity to take German I through distance learning online in 2011-12. The decision comes after two board of education meetings where numerous residents spoke out against the administration’s proposal
to eliminate German I at the middle school level due to low enrollment. Neither Wellwood nor Eagle Hill middle schools had enough students enrolled to meet F-M’s minimum class size requirement of 14 students, according to district officials. Through distance learning, eighth grade students for 2011-12 can take German 1 online if the combined class TAMI S. Consider turf options
To the editor: I commend the F-M Community Sports Facility Association for successfully leading the F-M community through an ambitious fund-raising campaign to purchase and install a new artificial turf field for the youth of this district, a project the local tax payers were not willing to support, but one which many residents felt important for the athletics programs to progress. The group has demonstrated how goals can be achieved by those who don’t want to give up, and this sets a good example for all to live by. However, as wonderful as this artificial turf is anticipated to be, a cloud hangs over, dampening my enthusiasm for this new field. My primary concern, as I and many others have voiced both past and present, both
locally and across this nation, is the question that still remains about the potential health and safety risks of the tire crumb rubber infill that will incorporated in the new field as a shock absorber—mainly the potential inhalation exposure of the dust generated by the tire crumb mixture. This mixture is made up of 20,000 – 40,000 ground up car tires combined with sand for one field. It is known that tire crumbs contain the following chemicals, some of which are carcinogens: carbon black, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, thallium, zinc, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is also known that dust from tire crumbs can be small enough to reach the deep lung, if inhaled, where the chemicals they contain can potentially be released directly into the tissue and blood stream. Although some studies have been done looking at tire crumb safety, critical data is still missing. Studies assessing nano-particle exposure as well as studies looking at chronic exposure to tire crumb dust have yet to be published. Therefore, I believe it is a mistake to currently conclude that exposure to tire crumb rubber infill is safe. The solution? There are many alternative infill materials that are not made from ground up tires which also provide the same shock-absorbing properties for these artificial turf fields. Why not proceed cautiously and use one of these infill materials on this new field instead of using the potentially hazardous tire crumbs? New York See Letters, page 5

Former J-D French teachers return from mission trip to Haiti Eight members of our Central New York Alliance for Haiti returned April 8 from northern rural Haiti. Our six-day mission trip was centered around St. Yves Parish in Thibeau, about 30 miles south of Cape Haitian. My initial impression of the area around St. Yves was one of contrasts. For example, of necessity for communication, many people have cell phones, but are lacking in sanitary needs such as running water and toilets. We were housed and wonderfully fed in the rectory of St. Yves parish. Sunday we adjusted to our new environment and worshiped with about 450 Haitians in a church built with help from people of Central NY. Lunch that day was shared with representatives of the “iF” foundation, a non-profit organization making loans for small local business start-ups. (Example: We ate turkey from an “iF” sponsored turkey farm.) Monday our real work began. St. Joseph’s Elementary is a school of 288 students supported 100 percent by the efforts of St. James Church in Cazenovia and our Cayuga/Syracuse Presbytery Haiti Educational Partnership and friends. At the school, team member Harry Dross instructed the principal of St. Joseph’s Elementary on how to use a flip camera and installed a new hard drive for his computer. Members Georgette Schmidt and Karen Dross made final preparations for in-service training in methods for teaching French and math for the local teachers while Marilyn Cornell visited the venue for workshops in art and reading-readiness for pre-school instructors. Georgette and I facilitated com-
munications by interpreting for Marilyn and Karen from English to French and colleagues Wynetta Devore and Stefan Merchant distributed materials and modeled doing the projects in shapes, colors, bubbles and collages. Marilyn arrived with suitcases full of supplies necessary to complete the lessons. Trip coordinator Bob Hood (from St. James Parish) spent the time inspecting progress in previously planned improvements in the school compound. One of his tasks was to deliver 117 pairs of used eyeglasses collected by students in Jamesville-DeWitt High School to the small medical clinic at St. Joseph’s. These had been measured and marked compliments of Malara Eyecare and Eyewear Gallery in Liverpool prior to our departure. The next two days were spent implementing the trip goals. After a regular one o’clock dismissal the Americans taught the host teachers, student centered lessons as opposed to rote memorization. Thursday, the CNY pedagogues watched while the Haitian instructors demonstrated what they had learned with the children. The school day ended with an assembly including singing, dancing and some speeches by the elementary aged students. That afternoon several of us visited four literacy sites sponsored by our CNY Alliance for Haiti. Most of the classrooms were rustic to say the least, but instruction was most animated and student enthusiasm palpable. Some of the classes were studying voter participation, a timely topic given their recent presidential election. This program was piloted by our own central New York’s Ruth Colvin, affectionately known in Haiti as Tante Ruth (Aunt

Each morning prior to our half hour drive to St. Joseph’s, we taught English lessons to about twenty locals from age ten to sixty. Although the students in attendance varied from day to day, enthusiasm was infectious and the last class ended with requests for more. The classes also gave us an opportunity to practice our Créole during instruction. Continuation is planned for the next group scheduled to travel there in June. Prior to flying back to the US we went on a brief tour of the capital, Port-auPrince. Little of the effects of the year-ago earthquake have been resolved. Tent
cities and port-a-potties are still much in evidence. A bright light was a visit to Matthew 25, a house of hospitality for visitors to Haiti and a school. Recently the tent city housed on its soccer field was closed and the field was now being prepared for play. Visiting Haiti is an eye opener and many more trips will be needed to continue the progress made so far. Scott Manuel is a member of the United Church of Fayetteville and the Cayuga Syracuse Presbytery Haiti Educational Partnership Mission & Ministry team.
Letters City has chosen to only use alternative infill materials on all new fields, rather than crumb rubber infill made from recycled car and truck tires (New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene). We have a responsibility to the children. Shouldn’t we strive to minimize their exposure to potentially hazardous substances, especially when alternatives are available? VALERIE CLARKE MANLIUS
Turf: Wealthy get their way
To the editor: I am a Manlius resident and my children received a comprehensive education in the Fayetteville-Manlius system and participated in the sports program. Having said that: Once again the wealthy have had their way against the wishes of a community. Twice rejected sports stadium and artificial turf field have now been funded by a handful of folks who have enough money (four gave over $100K) to build a field that was rejected by the community. Would these same people however vote for an increase in taxes to pay for teacher raises? As the Syracuse city schools decline (look at Blodgett!), we in the suburbs have a fake grass field for our youth to run around on while real education (math, science, language, etc. and the classrooms) for many of our area young citizens falls far short. Wouldn’t the $1.38 million been more wisely donated to truly educational ventures? The kids in F-M are indeed lucky

Theobald commends ESM, Core
To the editor: On April 6, my company along with Maura O’Toole from Benefit Consulting Group participated in a “Reality Check” program sponsored by the East Syracuse Minoa High School and Core Credit Union. You could call it a game of “Life” where the students would start with a certain amount of money and go table to table to different businesses who provided services such as legal representation, investment situations, automotive situations etc. Our table represented the world of insurance, mostly concentrating on auto, home owners, renters and health insurance. We were all given situation cards where we would ask each student questions about insurance purchases or what would happen if they were ticketed for driving while using their cell phone and how their decisions affected them monetarily. Sometimes they had to roll a die to see what their outcome would be. There must have been more than 200 students who participated in this game of life and they all had an enthusiasm to learn that was just amazing. This went on for almost two hours, but time just seemed to fly by as Maura and I each asked questions from our situation
cards to different students simultaneously. It was exciting, fast paced and all of them seemed truly focused as we quizzed them. They had a real appetite for learning, especially when we would explain to them how their decisions or situations could change their life’s outcome. I would like to commend the East Syracuse Minoa High School and Core Credit Union for providing a true to life
moment for these students and also thank those two organizations for asking me to participate. It truly was a learning moment for all of the students who came to our table of life. ED THEOBALD EDMOND J. THEOBALD FINANCIAL SERVICES

Schools ESM students get a ‘Reality Check’ More than 200 East Syracuse Minoa High School students participated in Reality Check, a student-run financial literacy event, held April 6. The students interacted with area professionals on topics vital to teens like automotive, budgeting and account handling, college and career, credit, discretionary spending, health and wellness, insurance, keeping your money safe, legal issues, and savings and investing. The event followed a game of “Life” format. Students were given “Reality Check” cash to start, received periodic paychecks, and traveled though the game dealing with scenarios presented on “situation cards” at various booths – often rolling dice to see the likelihood of different outcomes for each situation presented. They made decisions that affected their financial situations, received feedback from professionals and learned valuable lessons about life. The event was designed to provide students with a reality check on the consequences of decisions they make in their lives in a fun and engaging environment. Twenty area professionals offered their expertise and insights to students through-
out the evening, including Syracuse University, NewsChannel 9, CORE Federal Credit Union, East Area YMCA, Cooperative Federal Credit Union, Ridgeway and Conger, United Financial Services, Edmond Theobald Financial Services, Liverpool Schools Federal Credit Union, Erie Materials, Benefits Consulting Group, East Syracuse Chevrolet, Northside Collision, attorneys Joseph Lupia and Dominic Cambareri, and ESM School District guidance, nursing, business and communications department personnel. Following the event, students moved to the auditorium to play a consumer awareness game show, “My Money or Yours?” Contestants faced off against 10 of their peers and answered a variety of questions about personal finance and life choices, with a chance for the contestant or the “mob” to win up to $150. The evening was co-sponsored by ESM DECA and CORE Federal Credit Union who, in cooperation with the ESM School district, operates a wide variety of student financial literacy programs, including the first student run credit union in central New York at ESM high school.

The Fayetteville-Manlius Community Sports Facility Association has exceeded its fundraising goal to install a new all-weather turf field and track at the local F-M high school. The project has also received State Education Department approval, thus clearing the way for construction to begin in mid-May. Final details of the project were reviewed with the Fayetteville-Manlius Board of Education at its April 11 meeting. The project is expected to be completed in time for the beginning of the fall sports season in early September. “We are absolutely thrilled that so many residents and businesses in the F-M community, along with F-M alumni from around the world, have responded so generously to help make this dream a reality,” said Kevin Hanlon, co-chair of the association. “We couldn’t be happier to have achieved our fundraising goal in advance of the May 5 deadline, and so we now eagerly await getting shovels in the ground as soon as possible.” A fully landscaped donor recognition area will be built to recognize donors who provided gifts of $1,000 or more to serve as a “permanent tribute to this marvelous accomplishment,” said committee member Becky Pulver. Intensified fundraising efforts over the past several weeks resulted in dozens of new gifts. “This tremendous support from the F-M community, businesses and alumni has not only allowed
us to fund the construction of the project, but we’ve also been able to make a big dent in the $100,000 field replacement reserve fund which we are committed to having in place by the end of the calendar year,” said Brian Sischo, a member of the association. “In addition, the outpouring of support has also allowed us to consider adding a “shock pad” under the turf to improve safety for our student athletes by providing an extra layer of cushion to the field.” Much like including a pad under your carpet at home, the shock pad has a 25-year life and will extend the warranty of the turf from 10 to 12 years. Barring any major construction surprises encountered during initial site work, the FMCSFA anticipates adding this important feature to the project. “The school district and the Board of Education are extremely grateful to the leadership of the association, the hundreds of donors, and the dozens of volunteers that have worked so hard over the past year to make this project happen,” said Superintendent Corliss Kaiser. “On behalf of the students who will benefit from this project for years and years to come, I say thank you to each and every one of you.” The FM Community Sports Facility Association is recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity by the IRS and is comprised of a group of committed local community members who believe passionately in the ongoing development of academics, the arts and athletics for the students of Fayetteville-Manlius School District. For more information about this project, go to fmfield. com.

In a prior phone interview with the Eagle Bulletin, BOE President John Cucinotta said the district had received numerous letters from people who attended the April 4 meeting as well as from F-M graduates who still continue to benefit from learning the language. Parents, students and graduates lauded the foreign language department and its instructors, one of whom recently won a state-wide award. Last fall, German teacher Kate Stewart was awarded the Ruth E. Wasley Distinguished Teacher Award K-12 by The New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. “We are excited at the possibility of using distance learning as a means to allow our students to experience a course that would otherwise be canceled due to low enrollment,” said Superintendent Corliss Kaiser. “In the future, we will
continue to look for creative solutions that best address the challenges we face and to look forward to working with our teachers and community members to develop those solutions.” The district already has the technology available to offer the German course online so there will be no extra costs to taxpayers. There will also be no additional personnel costs. “I am very proud of the work that the parents and the students did to bring this issue to the attention of the board,” said parent Julia Graziano, whose daughter Mackennan took the program and is now studying overseas in Germany. “I’m also proud that the board and the superintendent took a step back, rethought their decision and came up with a responsible and creative compromise.” Graziano said she also hopes the policy of only offering German to honors students will come to an end. In Onondaga County, four out of 17 suburban school districts, including FayetteShe may get her wish. ville-Manlius, offer a German program beginning at the middle school level. The first is which students wishing to enroll in a course actually count toward the minimum class size threshold; the second is how students are assigned to eighth grade language courses. Currently, for an honors level course like German I, only students recommended by a teacher make up the course enrollment number that determines whether the course will be offered. Students’ whose parents request for their child to be enrolled in a course, even though the student does not have a teacher recommendation, do not count toward the initial enrollment figures. As well, students are recommended for honors language courses based on factors such as grades and consistent academic improvement. The administration will review the history of these practices, how they relate to current best practice, and what models are used at similar school districts around the state. Additionally, the administration said staff will work closely with the teaching faculty and provide a full review, with any recommendations for modifications, to the superintendent by Thursday Dec. 1. These will then be presented to the board of education at its December meeting so that any needed changes can be made before the next school year’s sectioning process.

tee. The 113-page report, which is available online at each municipality’s website, was completed March 31 and conducted by RFG Fire Rescue Consulting of Canton, Ga. Principal consultant Ron Graner first met the community March 31. Laura Rolnick of Fayetteville represented RFG Thursday night. The forum was held at Wellwood Middle School in Fayetteville. While the goal of the study outlines strategic rec-
ommendations to improve the effectiveness and efficiency in the utilization of resources with the fire departments, many residents were not convinced the dissolution of the current structure was the answer. “Why isn’t it possible for the current structures to simply work in a closer relationship to achieve the same economic savings?” asked resident Tom Schepp. “Why are you so convinced that one district is needed over the coopera-
tion amongst the existing districts?” Manlius Town Supervisor Ed Theobald said the study is simply intended to provide a starting point to kick-start the next phase. “We will be open-minded,” Theobald said. “The study doesn’t say that in the very end we have to consolidate.” He added, “Who knows what will happen when we’re done knocking this down and putting it together again.”
Others voiced concerns over equipment, personnel, insurance ratings and potential cost-saving measures. Fayetteville Mayor Mark Olson, Manlius Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin and Minoa Mayor Dick Donovan were present and have agreed to work together. Schepp asked the mayors, if the fire departments are dissolved, leaving the Department of Public Works as the lone major department within the villages:
“Will that be the slippery slope to saying, ‘Why do we even have the village organization anymore?’” Although there are no exclusive services, Olson noted the villages are paying more for the emergency services (more than $2 per $1,000) compared to the town of Manlius rate ($1.55 per $1,000). Olson said he is looking at the tax rate numbers to determine, “Can this work?” “If we cannot structure 13218

this deal and put it together to have better service with lower fees on the tax bill, it doesn’t make sense,” Olson said. “I think we [the Fayetteville Fire Department] do a great job in what we do, but I see some validity in looking at this report.” Olson said the report validates that the soonto-be-completed new Fayetteville Fire House is built in the right location, is designed-well and is muchneeded. “I wanted to know are we doing the right thing?” Olson said. “Are we providing the right services? Are we doing it the right way?” The Implementation Advisory Committee will be comprised of fire and government officials along with community members from each municipality. A meeting will soon occur that will begin a 90-day review window and conclude with a recommendation. John Zych is a regular contributing writer for the Eagle Bulletin.

Community News Gage holds Civil War 122nd flag commemoration and she said ‘absolutely.’” The Gage home is now a state and federally designated Underground Railroad site. Among local officials at the event were Onondaga County legislators Bill Meyer (District 3), Kevin Holmquist (District 10) and Judy Tassone (District 4); Manlius Supervisor Ed Theobald and County Clerk Ann Ciarpelli. Members of the Civil War Roundtable arrived in period dress. Meyer, whose district includes the town of Cicero where Gage grew up, presented declarations to Jane Tracy and Dolly Monteleone, two local women who created the reproduction of the original 122nd flag; Jim Keib, an active member of the Civil War Flag Committee; and Darothy DeAngelo and the Onondaga County Civil War Roundtable. Meyer also thanked Onondaga Historical Association Executive Director Greg Tripoli, recognizing that the OHA has played a critical role in the county’s flag restoration project over the last 10 years. “The flag that a lot of the soldiers took off to battle was the flag that their mother, their wife, their sister made,” Meyer said. “A lot of the troops were from the same community; they wanted to do their duty but they wanted to come home with the flag their mom made.” The flag presented to the 122nd regiment had hand-stitched on its stripes, “Presented by the Ladies of Fayetteville.” Onondaga County is the repository for the original flag.
By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation last week held a ceremony on its front lawn to commemorate the presentation of a Civil War flag to the 122nd regiment. The event took place April 12 on the sesquicentennial anniversary of the start of the Civil War. The actual flag presentation by Gage occurred on Aug. 25, 1862, when she presented it to local soldiers who were marching off to war. More than 12,000 men of Onondaga fought in the Civil War from 1861 to 1865. “When the war began, Matilda Joslyn Gage hung a flag from this house to commemorate that this work was being done to end slavery,” said Gage House Executive Director Sally Roesch Wagner. “She saw this as a terrible event, but an absolutely necessary one, because everything to that point had been tried, and war was finally necessary. If this is what it took to bring freedom to African Americans, this is what needed to happen.” Gage had offered her home and continued to offer it as a station on the Underground Railroad, and risked imprisonment – six months in jail and a $1,000 fine (equivalent to $23,000 in today’s money) for each freedom taker she invited into her home. “She said it was one of the proudest moments of her life when the Rev. F-M tennis wins twice; J-D beats ESM By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com
In advance of this Thursday’s showdown with West Genesee (off to its own 8-0 start), the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team did not waver, moving its long win streak to 192 consecutive matches. F-M dominated last Monday’s match against Oswego, sweeping past the Buccaneers 7-0. Mike Mintkosvky had the closest singles match, topping Mike Hart 6-2, 6-1. Nick Westergaard got past Austin DeMott 6-1, 6-1 as Wilbert Geng beat Ryan Patrick 6-0, 6-2. In doubles, the teams of Danny Miron-James Miron, Sam Badalina-Alex Martin, Kunal Sangani-Scott Trobert and Alex McCarthy-Eric Rosenthal lost just two games in eight sets of work. Much the same thing happened in Friday’s 7-0 win over Nottingham, as five of the seven matches were 6-0, 6-0 decisions. Westergaard beat Justin D’Antonio 6-0, 6-1. Also on Friday, Jamesville-DeWitt met neighbor East Syracuse-Minoa – and the Red Rams came out on top, beating the Spartans 5-2 as it was helped by a pair of singles forfeits. The contested singles matches were split, J-D’s Andrew Lee sweeping Shane Stone 6-0, 6-0 as ESM’s Tyler Underwood outlasted David Zhang 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Jim Quartier claimed a forfeit. A doubles classic saw the Spartans’ tandem of Brandon
and Parker Stone edge Erik Davis and Reed Tso 6-7, 7-6, 107. Otherwise, J-D saw Amir Nazem and Steve Procopio beat Esef Hamzic and Tyler Rosso 6-3, 6-2, with Alex Katsarsky and David Rapp-Kirshner getting a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jeff Espiscopo and Mushtak Mozeb. Earlier in the week, J-D moved to 3-0 by beating Cortland 6-1, mostly based on a doubles sweep. Allen Zhou lost in three sets to Donovan Prior 6-4, 3-6, 10-8, but Quartier handled Kyle Davis 6-1, 6-4, with Abraham Davis and Jack Alexander dropping just one game in their singles wins over, respectively, Kyle Fussner and James Williams. On Tuesday, J-D beat Homer by that same 6-1 margin, denied the sweep when Tso had a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 defeat to Keefe Garrett in singles play. Otherwise, the Red Rams won every match in two sets, anchored by Abraham Davis fighting past Riley Bauer 6-4, 7-5. Nazem and Procopio worked hard in doubles to beat Bob Chambrone and Allen Perry 6-1, 7-5. CBA could manage just one point in last Monday’s 4-1 defeat to Cazenovia, as in singles Colin Nardella dominated Lee Cudney 6-0, 6-1. The Brothers had to forfeit a singles match, though, and in doubles Ash Kamani and Dan Mantooth fell to Crozer Connor and John Lyga 6-4, 7-6. Joel Castellini and Paul Mullen had a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to Pat Marris and Noah Zimsmeister. ESM lost to Homer 5-2, swept in all four doubles matches. Singles proved a bit different, though, as Parker Stone beat Bauer 6-1, 6-4, while Brandon Stone rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jeff Eves.
Though it was closer Tuesday, the Spartans fell to Fulton 4-3. Parker and Brandon Stone again both won in straight sets, and this time Underwood contributed a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Doug Sherwood. But the Red Raiders won every doubles match in straight sets. Bishop Grimes arrived last Tuesday and beat LaFayette by that familiar 4-1 margin. Between them, Matt Miller, Mike Bespiaty and Greg Ostaszewski dominated with straight-set singles wins, while Christian Freeman and Sean Kilpatrick topped Evan DeRosier and Ashley Scholes 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in doubles competition. The Cobras dropped a 7-0 non-league match to West Genesee on Thursday, then fell to Chittenango 5-2 on Friday afternoon, despite Bespiaty beating Scott Mohr 6-4, 7-5 and Miller handling Daiki Terada 6-0, 6-2. Ostaszewski had a 6-2, 2-6, 10-6 defeat to Caleb Mannix. Manlius-Pebble Hill returned on Tuesday for its own 41 win, this time over Onondaga. Tristan Amond and Tyler Greco held off Sarah Grillo and Max Konstantanidi 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, with Alex French-Lawyer and Ben Parks topping Eric Rush and Alexis Smith 7-5, 6-2. Justin Oh and Ethan Rothschild both won in straight sets as Jon Koss fell to Kyle Stapleton 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. Then MPH defeated LaFayette in yet another 4-1 decision on Thursday afternoon, aided by Koss, Oh and Rothschild all winning their singles matches in straight sets. French-Lawyer and Parks put together a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 doubles win over Dave DePalma and Tyler Verzosa.
CBA girls get top state ranking, fall to Marcellus For at least one week, the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team carried the coveted title of the best in all of New York State. Yet the Brothers’ state no. 1 Class C ranking was bound to end in the wake of Thursday night’s 12-11 defeat to Marcellus at Alibrandi Stadium. The Mustangs, who occupied the no. 6 spot in those same state rankings, built a five-goal margin in the first half, then withstood CBA’s late rally with a pair of key defensive stops as time wound down. All looked normal when Taylor Poplawski and Taylor Gait scored in a 10-second spurt early in the first half. But the Brothers’ 2-1 lead did not last as Marcellus reeled off six unanswered goals, five of them from the duo of Nora Barry and Molly McGuane. It took a pair of saves late in the first half by goalie Courtney Henderson to switch the momentum. Poplawski and Marisa Romeo scored to cut the margin to 7-4 by halftime, with Romeo and Gait finding the net early in the second half to make it 7-6. Now they exchanged spurts, as Marcellus expanded the lead to 9-6, only to see
the Brothers catch up, Gait’s third goal with 16:14 left tying it 9-9. Again, though, the Mustangs regrouped as Ellen Brooks scored with 12:45 left and McGuane’s fourth goal three minutes later made it 11-9. Still down 12-10 as time wound down, the Brothers made one more comeback attempt. Poplawski found the net with 2:29 left, and in the final minute CBA swarmed at Marcellus, looking to force overtime.
Both Gait and Romeo would fight their way in for free-position shots. Both times, Mustang goalie Renee Poullott stopped them, her 11th and 12th saves allowing Marcellus to hang on. Before the Marcellus game, though, the Brothers had enjoyed a satisfying week, starting with the news of that no. 1 state ranking, and including last Monday’s 14-2 romp over neighbor and rival Jamesville-DeWitt.
Right from the opening draw, CBA imposed its will on J-D at both ends. Every Red Rams attack was repelled, and the Brothers were steadily productive, pitching a 7-0 first-half shutout and continuing to pull away in the late stages. Just as important was the way the attack was deep and balanced. Poplawski had three goals and two assists, while Gait, Caroline Webster, Romeo and Meg Hannan each found the net
twice. Kara Dell’uomo and Kallee LeTourneau scored, too, as Romeo and Hannan added assists. J-D would bounce right back a day later, ripping Whitesboro 19-5 as it scored 12 times in the first half alone to atone for all the struggles it had against CBA. Free to produce, Taylor Fallon had three goals and three assists. Lauren Swan also found the net three times as Taylor Bierwagen, Lauren Beville, Kaleigh Ca-
vanaugh and Sonia Narispur each scored twice. Bierwagen added two assists, with Caitlin Cariseo doing the same as she and Katie Coughlin got single goals. On Saturday, the Red Rams lost 16-6 to Fairport, never recovering from the visitors’ 10-2 first-half blitz. Swan and Beville earned two goals apiece, with Bierwagen adding a goal and two assists. Fallon had one goal and one assist.

NEWSPAPERS
Baseball Hornets fall to CNS By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Favored again in the CNY Counties League American division, the Fayetteville-Manlius baseball team quickly wanted to reinforce those pre-season expectations in its first action of the 2011 season. By far, the most important action would come Friday afternoon, when another pre-season favorite, Cicero-North Syracuse, would pay a visit. It would turn into a game of missed opportunities – and lots of them – as F-M notched 11 hits, yet still took a 3-1 loss to the Northstars. Brooks Weigl gave up a first-inning run, but the senior right-hander shut down CNS over the next four frames as, in the bottom of the second, F-M tied it 1-1 when Jeremy Mapstone legged out an infield hit, scoring Dave Nuzzo. Fine defense, especially from second baseman Louis Testone, kept
the Northstars off the board. Other than in the fourth, F-M had someone reach base in every inning against CNS left-hander Kyano Cummings, but could not translate those chances into run, especially in the late going after Cory Burrows’ RBI single in the top of the fifth put the visitors back in front 2-1. The sixth inning, in particular, proved frustrating. Testone reached second on a dropped fly ball, but when Bryan Hill singled, Testone tried to score – only to have left fielder Mark Sherlock throw him out at the plate. Moments later, Mike Palermo singled off Cummings’ foot. Still, Cummings stayed in and, after walking Jim Novakowski to load the bases, got Mapstone to fly out. CNS added a run in the seventh off reliever Zach Tucker, but still it wasn’t over. In the bottom of the seventh, with James Coleman pitching in relief of Cummings, Mike Perry and Mike Monashefsky both singled to get the tying runs on base with one out. Testone hit into a fielder’s choice, though, and Hill struck out to end the game.
The Hornets hosted Central Square in last Monday’s opener and unleashed all kinds of offense during a 17-3 rout of the Red Hawks. Amid wind and warm temperatures, F-M scored three runs in the first inning, then broke a 3-3 tie with five runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead for good. A five-run rally in the fifth would follow as the Hornets, in all managed 14 unanswered runs. F-M’s 14 hits included a home run from Pat McClure, who had a team-best four RBIs. Mike Perry had two hits and drove in three runs, while Jeremy Mapstone managed two hits and two RBIs. Bryan Hill and Mike Palermo both had two hits and one RBI. Dave Nuzzo scored three runs. Given plenty of run support, Zach Tucker pitched four innings and amassed 11 strikeouts on his way to the win. Brooks Weigl and Billy Patrick tossed three innings of scoreless relief. This week, F-M is set to play Camden and Rome Free Academy before a key Saturday game against Baldwinsville.
ESM, CBA, J-D baseball deal with defeats By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Looking back from the perspective of just a single week, the East Syracuse-Minoa baseball team’s 8-3 upset of Bishop Ludden on April 7 looks even more impressive – and odd, given what would immediately follow. The very next time the Gaelic Knights took the field against Christian Brothers Academy, the Brothers lost 130, victimized by pitcher Ryan O’Kane’s no-hitter. As O’Kane was amassing 10 strikeouts and allowing just two CBA hitters to reach base (one error and one walk), Chris Davis smashed a pair of early home runs off pitcher Luke Alletzhauser, who took the loss. James Murray and Ciro Frontale added fourth-inning blasts. Meanwhile, ESM moved on and, hosting Fulton, got its own pitching gem from Steve Brownell in a 5-0 shutout of the Red Raiders. Going the route, Brownell only allowed three hits and struck out nine Fulton batters. It helped to have an early lead, as ESM notched single runs in the first and second inning, then scored three times in the bottom of the third. Brownell, to help his own cause, got two hits, including a double, and earned a pair of RBIs. Mike Para had three hits, scoring once and adding an RBI. Steve Loder had two hits and scored twice, while Joe Greco also drove in a run. Just as quickly, though, the Spartans sputtered in last Tuesday’s home game against Mexico, unable to even get on the board in an 11-0 loss to the Tigers. Mexico scored twice in the first inning, then tacked on
three more runs in the fourth and, just to be sure, put things away with a six-run outburst in the seventh. Greco took the loss as he, Ben Loder and Joel Clark all saw mound duty. Despite four hits, ESM could not solve Tigers pitching ace Tyler Dunsmoor, who went the route and struck out five. It got worse on Thursday when ESM could not contain Homer, who relied on 14 hits to beat the Spartans by a score of 11-8. Homer notched runs in each of the first four innings, overcoming an early 3-2 deficit to lead 6-4. Then it scored five more times in the sixth and seventh frames, making it 11-4 before a frantic ESM rally in the bottom of the seventh fell just short. In defeat, Casey Sullivan and Brendan O’Donnell each drove in two runs, with Para, Loder and Jeremy Fletcher earning one RBI apiece. Para and LeGro each scored twice. Homer unleashed lots of power as Zach Blanden, Zephan Kash and Andy Parker hit home runs and combined for seven RBIs. Jamesville-DeWitt fell below the .500 mark thanks to Cortland, who mostly used one big rally to subdue the Red Rams in a 10-6 defeat. They were tied, 1-1, until the bottom of the second, when the Purple Tigers batted around and plated six runs, forcing J-D into catch-up mode the rest of the game. Evan Kimber took the loss, with Max Bregande seeing a long stint in relief. Eric Thompson scored twice and managed a solo home run, while Justin Marzella and Jimmy Sinopoli also drove in runs. Chris Lenish doubled
Grimes baseball beats Port Byron, Cato-Meridian By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com The Bishop Grimes baseball team aimed to establish itself as a main contender in the OHSL Patriot division – and succeeded, to a large degree. Hosting Port Byron last Monday afternoon, the Cobras mostly relied on one big rally to earn a 10-2 victory over the Panthers. Grimes took a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the fourth, where it amassed six runs to take command and give pitcher Matt Allan all the support he needed. Allan went five innings for the win, combining with Mike Timpano to hold Port Byron to seven hits. David Campese doubled and drove in two runs for the Cobras as Evan Pitonzo also had a pair of RBIs. Allan himself had two hits and scored twice as Will Commisso and Artie VanHousen gained one RBI apiece. Zac Cousineau scored a pair of runs, too. Without any rest, the Cobras turned around 24 hours later and, visiting Cato-Meridian, did enough to beat the Blue Devils 9-6. Steady and productive, Grimes scored at least twice in four of the first five innings, helped by six Cato errors that negated the Blue Devils’ 10-7 hit advantage. Cousineau, Connor Sohl and Ryan Gosson each drove in two runs, with Josh Allan scoring three times and Mike Timpano crossing the plate twice. Pitonzo was shaky on the mound, but still pitched a complete game. Bishop Grimes’ softball team lost Monday to Port Byron 17-9 in a game tied 8-8 until the Panthers took over late with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. In defeat, Elizabeth Vinciquera and Alexis Kuberski each had two RBIs, while Lauren Vaughn and Nicole Donati also drove in runs. A day later, the Cobras lost to Cato-Meridian 21-0.
and scored a pair of runs. Alex Stacy led Cortland with a double and three RBIs. And the Red Rams couldn’t recover Thursday, losing to Fowler 5-3 in eight innings Marzella’s three-run home run in the bottom of the first was all J-D could muster as Falcons pitcher Tommie Spinner blanked them the rest of the way, amassing 15 strikeouts. Marzella also pitched a shutout into the sixth before Fowler tied it, 3-3. Bregande replaced Spinner, only to see the Falcons score twice in the top of the eighth to win it, aided by shoddy J-D defense as the Rams committed four errors. It got worse on the weekend, with J-D falling 1-0 to Fulton Friday despite fine pitching from Dan Canfield and Matt Yonta. The Red Raiders’ Max Fobes drove home the game’s only run in the seventh as the Rams managed just five hits. On Saturday, the Rams lost 22-8 to Cicero-North Syracuse as the Northstars put up eight runs in the third inning and seven more runs in the fifth. In defeat, Marzella did smash a pair of home runs and earn three RBIs as Tyler Kirwan and Paul Fitzgibbons each drove in one run. CBA lost Friday to Cortland 9-6, victimized by the Purple Tigers batting around in third inning and getting six runs. The Brothers closed within 7-6 before a two-run seventh inning helped Cortland get away. Dave Anderson had two RBIs, with Mike Trasolini, Steve Gangemi and Sean Lavin also driving in Runs. Purple Tigers teammates Ryan Flatt and Connor Griffin both hit home runs.
CBA softball topples Cazenovia, falls to Marcellus By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com
Add the Christian Brothers Academy softball team to those thinking that it can rise to the top of the OHSL Liberty division. In a rousing season opener, the Brothers met league favorite Cazenovia and, with a combination of pitching and timely power, beat the Lakers 2-1. Cazenovia returned every starter from a team that went to the Section III Class A finals a season ago, including pitcher Nicole Chairello, who matched CBA Jordan Sheridan with zeroes through the first four innings. But Sheridan broke up the shutout with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth. After Cazenovia tied it 1-1 in the top of the fifth, CBA struck again in the bottom of that
frame, Hannah Morris driving home Monica Hanson with an RBI single. From there, Sheridan blanked the potent Lakers, finishing off a five-hit complete game as she allowed two walks, striking out three and getting sparkling defense behind her. Yet that good feeling did not persist, as the Brothers fell the next day to Marcellus in a 4-3, 10-inning classic. Down 2-0 late in regulation, CBA rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth (both scoring on Monica Hanson’s single) to tie it. After an eighth and ninth inning where neither side would score, the Mustangs went back ahead with two runs in the top of the 10th, then held off the Brothers’ attempts to catch up again. Sheridan allowed 12 hits, which overcame her eight strikeouts.

Girls golf teams return; F-M, J-D earn early wins By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Warmer weather arrived just as the area’s quartet of girls golf teams started their action for 2011, and early results proved quite telling. Fayetteville-Manlius, an annual power, started out by sweeping a three-way match against Rome Free Academy and Liverpool. The Hornets held off the Black Knights 179-191, with the Warriors (243) much further behind. In a big change, F-M moved home matches from Butternut Creek to Green Lakes State Park. Also, head coach Anne Miller has 22 girls on her roster, the highest total in years. As for that season opener, F-M saw its top returning player, Alex Seabury, shoot a 41 for nine holes, the same as RFA’s Mary Ann Bulawa. But the Hornets had more depth as Meghan Kingsley managed a 45 and Maria Mintskovsky added a 46 ahead of the Black Knights’ next-best total. Lela Feldmeier and Brianna Winslow shot matching totals of 47 as one of
the newcomers, Kenzie Kingsley, added a 49. In a big local showdown at the Poolsbrook, Jamesville-DeWitt scored a 175 to knock off Christian Brothers Academy, who posted a 177. Host East SyracuseMinoa trailed them both with 239. Among individuals, the Brothers’ Mary Fletcher did best, scoring a 38, but the Red Rams had a balanced effort behind Molly Hair’s total of 41 as Kristina Hartung led ESM with a 38. J-D didn’t stop there, going to Woodcrest on Wednesday and shooting 147 to roar past Chittenango (191) and Cazenovia (206). Kara Capstraw shot a 33, one of her best individual totals, while Hair improved to a 37. To complete a perfect opening week, J-D beat Marcellus 154-197 at Butternut Creek as Capstraw again took over, shooting a 30, her lowest high-school score yet. Hair was solid, too, posting a 38. Meanwhile, CBA was beating Chittenango 180-243 behind Fletcher’s 37 and ESM was absorbing a 268-284 defeat to Skaneateles at Skaneateles Country Club. Neither of the boys teams from Bishop Grimes or ManliusPebble Hill would win any opening-week matches.
