East Syracuse village mayor to run for county legislature

By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com East Syracuse Mayor Danny Liedka announced last week he is running for a seat on the Onondaga County Legislature. Election Day is Tuesday Nov. 8.

Town of Manlius to begin tennis program this June

The two-term mayor wants to represent residents of the newly redrawn seventh district, which covers parts of DeWitt, Eastwood, Sedgewick and East Syracuse, as well as one election district in the city’s 17th Ward. Currently, no incumbent resides in this district.

Last year, Liedka unsuccessfully vied for a seat in the state Senate 49th Liedka District against incumbent Democrat David Valesky. He lost the Republican line in the primary election against challenger Andrew Russo, who later lost in the general

election to Valesky.

In the following Eagle Bulletin Q&A with Editor Tami S. Zimmerman, Liedka says he’s ready for bigger challenges and explains why residents should elect him as their legislator.

What have been some of your achievements as East Syracuse mayor over the last four years?

City for 11 years. “Fayetteville is a real special place in all of New York state,� Graham said. “[It] is one of less than 100 communities in New York that’s recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree City.�

The Manlius Village Board last week adopted a $5,271,165 budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year with a total reduction of 3.1 percent over last year’s $5,441,873 budget. The tax rate will hold the line at $7.38 per $100,000 assessed value, which has remained the same since the 2007-08 fiscal year. “I am grateful to all our department heads for working hard to right-size their budgets to achieve a 3.1 percent reduction in our expenditures for 2011-12,� Serafin said.

Due to the new county sales tax agreement that reduced the village’s revenue stream by 50 percent, village residents will see a reduction in their county property tax bills, said Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin.

The mayor also said the finance committee will be looking at developing a fiveyear budget plan to project its obligations, needs, expenses and revenue.

Tennis program to begin in Manlius this June

Eagle Hill and Wellwood middle schools. “The goal is to give the [students] basic instruction on all strokes of the game, and then get them confident enough to get out and actually play on their own. “The whole idea is to motivate [the kids] and get them out to play, maybe even with their parents,� he said, adding tennis is great exercise for players of any age.

On a national level, tennis is on an uptrend, but locally, Dolan said, lacrosse, soccer and other team-oriented sports take center stage because the schools offer great programs to prepare children for the high school level. Tennis isn’t offered in the middle schools. Public programs are limited and typically offered by private entities, which can get costly due to court fees.

Tennis, however, can be one of the least expensive sports to play, he said; it just requires a racquet, some balls, an open court and a partner. “We have so many wonderful outdoor courts in town with Eagle Hill and Wellwood and the high school that if someone is teaching lessons on those courts, they’re not going to have to pay [to use the] tennis court [in contrast to a club]. A six-week lesson for a beginner with me would cost $60. I’m trying to make it cost effective and get a lot of people involved.�

Additionally, since tennis is partner-dependent, kids who take the course will immediately meet a peer who plays at the same level. “All of a sudden, they have someone to play with,� Dolan said. “Socially, parents are very cognizant of what activities their kids are in. Knowing who they’re involved with, who they’re playing tennis with and knowing it’s a good, healthy

Each of these world-renowned tennis players was at one time a beginner. This summer, the Manlius Recreation Department is offering tennis programs for today’s beginners. See where the road takes you or your children.

Mark Dolan, a 1981 Fayetteville-Manlius graduate, will coach the summer programs to begin in June. Dolan began playing tennis at age 12 and had his first formal lessons through the very same department. “I started hitting [balls] off the wall at Wellwood when I was little,â€? he said. “Then I took the lessons [through Manlius Recreation] ‌ then [my parents] sent me to camp. Once I went to [tennis] camp that was it. I was addicted. I played everyday.â€?

Dolan, who in high school was twice named sectional champion, eventually became a college coach after teaching tennis in private clubs for more than 35 years. He coached at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, Hamilton College in New York and Bradley College in Illinois before returning home to Central New York in 2008. As a coach, he built from the ground up a couple Division I programs to national levels, he said. Currently, Dolan volunteers his time coaching the men’s tennis team at the State University of New York at Oswego. “I’ve played tennis my whole life,� he said. He hopes to introduce more youth to the strategic game through two affordable programs that will take place on the outdoor courts at

‘Run for HOPE’: For you, Time to go to ten? for your loved ones Last week my fiance Tim and I went for an exhilarating jog in the rain and thunder and lightning. I splashed through and hopped over puddles, got soaked and loved it. There’s nothing like allowing the rain to work its magic instead of fighting it off with a bulky umbrella. For us, the experience released joy and laughter; it freed us to let go of silly cares and just be in the moment.

Spring is full of hope; a fresh start. Everything is new again. Trees bud, flowers bloom, birds sing and the days are becoming longer and warmer. The transition from winter to spring always turns my mind to themes of hope and renewal.

A top facilitator of this process in Syracuse is the community organization, HOPE for Bereaved. Since the mid 1970s, HOPE has been dedicated to helping people in their journey from grief to hope through support groups and counseling free of charge. Founder Therese Schoeneck, whose personal loss inspired her to establish HOPE, is known to say, “you may never be the same, but you can be a new you.”

Since “Run for HOPE” is about lifting spirits, remembering loved ones and discovering you again, participants are encouraged to remember their loved ones by bringing a photo, special memento or note to post on a memory board. Those just beginning the journey can make this their first step toward a future filled with hope and happiness again.

September, and baseball is designed to head toward a pulsating climax where every game, every inning, every pitch could decide a season’s fate.

Yet what did we have last September?

The Yankees doing everything but tank in the AL East, knowing they could slide into the wild card and beat up Minnesota again, leaving Tampa Bay to “win” by drawing another division champion from Texas – who knocked the Rays out.

Yes, the Rangers ended up winning the American League pennant, but just the fact that a division title carried no substantial reward may have stuck with Bud Selig and the MLB powers-that-be.

Word has leaked out that Selig wants the playoffs to go from eight to 10 teams in 2012. That means an extra wild card, and the two non-division winners will play off to see who joins the main fray. It may be a single game. It may be two-out-of-three.

As with everything baseball, the debates are going full-blast. Some decry a further dilution of the playoff product – too many teams get in already. Others applaud Selig for recognizing a flaw in the system and working to address it.

My reaction has come in two parts. At first, there were some exhaled groans about baseball, which once just went straight to the World Series, edging closer to NFLNBA-NHL territory with a plan to get one-third of its teams into the playoffs.

But then I started reading some of the game’s better sages, and a different view emerged.

Only since 1995 have we possessed the six-division structure and eight-team post-season. And what’s become clear is that wild-card teams are good enough to win it all – the Marlins twice, Angels in 2002 and Red Sox in 2004.

So just having the wild card was a good move. Yes, purists will point out that 100-win teams got shut out in the past (think the 1993 Giants), but it is, without question, a fairer system.

On the other hand, the unintentional byproduct of this advancement was the fact that a division championship, hard-earned over 162 games and six months, meant close to nothing. All it gave you was an extra home game – if a playoff series got that far.

Make it a 10-team format, and suddenly you have to win a division in order to earn a bye and a few days of much-needed rest. Division leaders, if in a tight race with

a wild-card entry, will have to use their best pitchers to avoid the possibility of falling to Blackwell second.

And here’s where it really can get fun. A Random best-of-three wild-card round would give Thoughts division champs too much rest and no real advantage, either. So why not make it a one-game deal?

Think about it. Baseball has lamented the attention given in September to early-season football, college and pro alike. All that would change, quickly, if we knew that, a day or two after the regular season ended, two wild cards would have their seasons on the line.

There have not been too many decisive games in the baseball post-season in recent years, and no Game 7 in the World Series since 2002. A 10-team playoff with a one-game wild-card classic would guarantee two win-orelse scenarios every season.

Perhaps the best post-season games of the last four years have come in situations like this. There was the 2007 Rockies-Padres epic, with Colorado going 14 innings just to get into the playoffs, fueling a run to the Fall Classic. And there was the 2009 Twins-Tigers classic in the Metrodome, again going to extra innings before Minnesota pulled it out.

Had they taken place in the middle of a series, diehards would remember it, but few others. However, the fact that an entire season hinged on a single game made for better theater.

Sure, it’s contrived. But so is any post-season format at the end of a long regular season in any sport, where a single result can confirm, or refute, all that has taken place before.

Not too long ago, the wisdom over adding three measly teams to the NCAA basketball tournament was severely questioned. Then Virginia Commonwealth, who would have missed a 65-team field, got all the way to the Final Four.

Now Major League Baseball has that chance to create a season-long buzz and to make the phrase “September to remember” more than just a cliché that rhymes. We’ve already heard some union qualms about a longer season, but why would they oppose a chance to get more players into the post-season?

Bud Selig has been criticized or blamed for everything but the weather. But he wasn’t wrong about expanding the playoffs – and he isn’t wrong here, either.

More is better, if done wisely.

From the mailbag Manlius FD recruitment continues

To the editor: The results of our 2011 recruitment drive kickoff open houses on April 9 and 10 were a huge success. Over the two days, approximately 70 visitors stopped by with two families signing up for our smoke detector program and nine individuals expressing interest in potentially joining the department.

We are now in the midst of our second phase of our recruitment drive which consists of several table campaigns being held at local businesses within the community.

On April 23, members of the department set up a booth outside of CVS to speak to residents about the importance of serving the community. During this time we were able to secure the names of five more individuals who wanted to learn more about volunteering.

During the month of May, there will be two more table campaigns that will be held, which will allow members of the community to speak to representatives of the department about the many exciting opportunities we have. The table campaigns will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday May 14 at Brueggers Bagels and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday May 28 at Nice and Easy.

Our recruitment drive winds down at the beginning of June followed by our Orientation Program.

F-M Day 2011 to benefit Fayetteville Memory Garden to be determined. The F-M baseball, softball, and lacrosse teams each have games that day, and there will be a dance 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the high school courtyard for high school students only.

The Fayetteville Memory Garden is a project coordinated by F-M senior Rachael Ristau, who is creating the garden in honor of her father, Michael Ristau, who died of liver cancer in 2005.

Since March 2010, Ristau

has raised about $40,000 toward the project and plans to break ground in May. Several local companies have volunteered their services or

provided them at a discount, including Dalpos Architects & Integrators, Hueber-Breuer Construction Co., O’Brien & Gere, Paragon Supply, and

Avalon Printing. The total cost of the project will depend up on each company’s total contribution, which is still to be determined.

Camp Good Days to host open house Camp Good Days will host an open house May 21 for the Fayetteville-Manlius community at its recreational camping facility on the shores of Keuka Lake in Branchport.

The event is a show of appreciation for raising a total of over $1 million from the annual Dance Marathon at Fayetteville-Manlius High School over the last 20 years.

The open house is open to anyone who has been involved with Dance Marathon this year or any of the past 20 years. Camp Good Days will host a camp-style cook out, offer tours and invite everyone to experience the ameni-

ties of the facility, weather pending. Transportation will be provided. Buses will leave from F-M High School at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday May 21 and return at approximately 5 p.m. the same day.

Camp Good Days attributes its success to donations from individuals and organizations. The efforts of this year’s Dance Marathon alone have resulted in $130,000 in donations for Camp Good Days. Also, dozens of F-M Students volunteer for Camp Good Days each summer.

ESM’s efforts build four wells in Sudan, school is next For the past two years, members of the East Syracuse Minoa chapter of Students Taking Action Now in Darfur have been raising money to help bring fresh drinking water to Sudan.

Their efforts have resulted in four wells being built in South Sudan. On May 6, they will kick off fundraising to rebuild a local school that was devastated by war more than seven years ago in Ariath, South Sudan.

May 6 nationally recognized comedian Myq Kapla from NBC’s Last Comic Standing will do a benefit comedy show from 7 to 9 p.m. in the ESM Central High School Auditorium. Tickets are $7 presale and $10 at the door (if available).

ESM’s STAND Chapter worked with local lost boy, Clement Kuek, to bring the first fresh water well to his home village. The people of his village call one well, “East Syracuse Minoa.”

Headed by ESM senior Angela Shaw, the chapter hopes to construct the school and begin enrollment in Ariath’s first boys’ and girls’ primary school in two years. Funds are being donated to Clement Kuek’s Hope for Boys and Girls in Ariath South Sudan.

“The students’ vision is truly global, and it is to their credit that they noticed a need an ocean away and reached their hands out to help the men, women and children of Ariath, South Sudan,” said Club Advisor Keith Ward, a teacher at ESM. Through this project, the students of ESM are embracing 21st century learning which includes global awareness.

New Schepp Family Funeral Home to be Antique vehicles to be offered for processions beginning built in Minoa this summer

A new funeral home will replace the current 61-year-old R.H. Schepp & Son on East Avenue in Minoa.

Schepp Family Funeral Homes is constructing a new 7,200square-foot facility in a highly visible location. The original, built in 1959 by founder Russell H. Schepp, is on what has become a quiet residential street. “I fear some new residents may not even know there is a funeral home in Minoa,� said his son Tom Schepp.

The new location will be at the corner of Main Street (also known as Schepps Corners Road) and Kirkville Road, just north of the village of Minoa.

The design is similar to Schepp’s two other funeral homes, Eaton-Tubbs-Schepp in Fayetteville and Newell-Fay in Manlius. All facilities will be on one level and provide spacious surroundings for any service request. For instance, many funeral homes have two chapels on each side of a center hall, which makes it difficult to have larger services where everyone can be accommodated in one area. “Our facilities have both chapels next to each other,� Schepp said. “This allows us to divide the chapel into smaller, more intimate areas or open it up for large services where everyone can be seated, see and hear the service.�

Unique to Schepp Family Funeral homes is the introduc-

tion of antique funeral vehicles that may be used during processions. A detached garage behind the Minoa facility will store the classic fleet. “My hobby has been antique cars,� said Schepp, who just finished restoring a 1928 Buick hearse this winter. Olson read aloud two proclamations – one recognizing Arbor Day and the other honoring village historian Barbara Rivette for her longtime service – more than 31 years – to the village. “[Barbara] really is creating history by keeping our history,” Olson said.

Rivette, who was surprised by the official formality, said the village has always been kind to her.

“I enjoy doing [the work] for them,” she said.

The Fayetteville ceremony focused on the Veterans’ Park iconic elm tree, a European elm-on-American elm graft that has survived the scourge of Dutch elm disease for about 50 years. Rivette spoke about the tree’s history, and Bartlett Tree Experts’ Tom Mullarney explained the science that made the tree possible.

At ESM’s Woodland Elementary, students also celebrated trees in song and poem. They planted three trees: an English oak, a read maple and a London planetree in the park across from their school. Bartlett Tree Experts pruned older trees nearby.

My years in village government have taught me that government can be run efficiently and effectively, cutting spending while still delivering vital services. It’s time to

I will focus on lowering taxes, cutting spending and fostering private sector job development. These are the issues on the minds of Onondaga County residents, whether they live in the city or the suburbs. I have a proven track record of delivering on all three of those issues. I will ask people to use my past achievements as a promise of future efforts. Others may talk the talk, but I have walked the walk.

Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently when you campaigned against Sen. David Valesky? If yes, what?

Running for the state Senate was a worthwhile experience. I met a lot of great people. In terms of my personal effort, or the issues I raised, I wouldn’t change anything. I probably should have taken a closer look at the amount of money I needed to raise to run a competitive race. Raising money is tough when you come from a blue-collar background like mine.

Why do you believe you’re the right person for the job?

I have strong record in local government. I relate well to the people I serve. And, I have specific ideas for improving our community.

What is your all-time motto, particularly when faced with challenges?

Always tell the truth, don’t grandstand and, above all, never forget you work for the taxpayers.

Some press reports have called this the “Liedka District,” and claimed that it was drawn specifically for you. How do you respond to that?

First of all, I had no input into the redistricting process. None. Second, if they did draw the district for me, they could have done a better job of it. There are 20 percent more Democrats in it than Republicans. I expect a hard-fought campaign.

F-M crew season opens at Saratoga The rowing season has officially started, Fayetteville-Manlius High School’s crew team traveled to the Saratoga Invitational last weekend, its first regatta of the spring season.

The weather was sunny and beautiful. And it was a large field, with 41 clubs competing from seven U.S. states, plus Canada.

F-M was represented by 77 athletes who competed in the 1,500 meter races on Saturday and 46 varsity athletes who competed in eight rowing races on Sunday in 2000 meter events.

J-D softball wins twice, moves to 9-0

The second varsity four men’s boat placed third and received a bronze medal. The boat was crewed by Matt Foran, Chris Warren, Garrett Tongue, Graham Ritchie, and Connor Williams.

A third medal for FM was awarded to the second girls varsity four.

They, too, were awarded the bronze medal for their third-place finish. The rowers were Nikole Metz, Kaitlin Anderson, Samantha Paige, Kiera Lynn and Claire Meyers.

The next race of the season will be at Onondaga Lake Park as local teams compete in the Section III championships on Saturday.

A 7-0 start planted the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team in a familiar spot – the state Class A rankings, where it stood at no. 12 as last week’s scheduled game with East Syracuse-Minoa got postponed.

In the meantime, the Red Rams took care of two other OHSL Freedom division opponents, starting last Thursday with a 7-2 conquest of Mexico.

J-D led 2-0 in the first inning, saw the Tigers tie it 2-2, and then answered with two more runs in the bottom of the second to move in front for good.

Tessa Devereaux and Leetja Bryant each managed three hits, part of a 13- hit Rams attack. Mary Young, Rachel Honis, Meghan Engstrom and Jessica Sgromo drove in one run apiece as Devereaux scored a pair of runs.

Meanwhile, Engstrom and Kerri Keeler assumed the usual split of pitching duties, combining for seven strikeouts and allowing just one walk between them.

Two days later, the Red Rams combined a

quick start with more terrific pitching from Engstrom and Keeler to shut out Chittenango 6-0.

J-D got to Bears pitcher Kaleigh Koegel for four runs in the bottom of the first.

Honis coaxed a bases-loaded walk, Young stole home and Engstrom capped it with a two-run single.

Engstrom had another RBI single in the third, and she teamed with Keeler on a onehitter. In her three-inning stint, Keeler struck out seven without allowing a walk.

Just before it was first supposed to meet J-D, ESM did face Chittenango last Monday afternoon and needed a late comeback to push past the Bears 5-4.

An early 2-0 lead vanished when Chittenango notched three runs off Julie Maselli in the top of the fifth inning. ESM stayed calm and, in the sixth, had a three-run rally of its own, and reliever Danielle Ventrone recorded the final three outs, despite the Bears scoring once to make it closer.

F-M baseball handles J-D baseball B’ville, Proctor outscores CBA, 12-10

A long time – 10 days to be exact – had passed since the Fayetteville-Manlius baseball team had taken the field, a delay caused mostly by various weather postponements.

One of those rained-out games was an April 23 meeting with Baldwinsville – but when it got made up a couple of days later, the Hornets used a quick start, plus stellar pitching from Brooks Weigl, to beat the Bees 4-2.

Before B’ville pitcher Corey Bruce could settle down, F-M had tagged him for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Louis Testone capped the rally with a two-run double after Mike Perry and Jeremy Kidd drove in the other runs. Pat McClure finished with two hits and one run scored.

Then Weigl did the rest. In a game shortened to five innings by rain, the righthander gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out seven.

This started a big week for Weigl, who again was brilliant on the mound Saturday as the Hornets went to Utica Proctor and beat the Raiders 4-1.

Weigl managed to outpitch Proctor’s ace, Wendell Wright, only surrendering a single run in the first inning as he held the Raiders to six hits and struck out five.

F-M knocked out Wright by scoring three runs in the third inning and another run in the fourth.

Tuesday’s deluge wiped out a trip to

Rome Free Academy, but in the make-up of that game Saturday (just before the Proctor game) the Hornets defeated the Black Knights 6-1.

In its only non-league game of the week, F-M played at Skaneateles Wednesday and unleashed lots of offense in a 13-1 romp over the Lakers.

On its way to 12 hits for the game, F-M saw Weigl and Sean Bright both go deep for home runs and finish with three RBIs apiece. Testone and Jimmy Novakowski also drove in runs as Bryan Hill scored twice.

Jeremy Mapstone, who had an RBI and two runs scored, also pitched five innings of two-hit ball that included six strikeouts to pick up the win. Bright worked the remaining two innings in relief.

F-M then made it three straight wins by taking out defending Class AA champion Auburn in a 13-3 romp on Thursday afternoon at Falcon Park.

The second inning proved decisive as the Hornets, down 1-0, erupted for six runs, tacking on two more runs in the fourth and five runs in the seventh in support of Zach Tucker, who allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings to get the win.

Ten different Hornets players scored runs, including two each from Novakowski, Perry and Mike Palermo. Six players – Palermo, Perry, Mapstone, Testone, McClure and Kidd – managed two hits apiece as part of a 15-hit effort.

And the Red Rams did so in the most satisfying manner, going across town and working through an eight-inning classic to beat Christian Brothers Academy 12-10 on Saturday afternoon.

This one went back and forth, as CBA went ahead 4-1 in the first inning, only to have J-D score seven straight runs to crash into an 8-4 lead. Then it was the Brothers’ turn, with six runs in the fourth and fifth innings to reclaim a 10-8 lead.

J-D had the last surge, though, tying it in the sixth and winning it with a pair of eighth-inning runs as relievers Evan Kimber and Justin Marzella blanked the Brothers down the stretch.

Nine different Rams scored runs, as Jim Sinopoli got three RBIs. Marzella smacked a home run and finished with two RBIs, while Dan Canfield, Mason Schoeneck and Chris Lenish also drove in runs. CBA lost despite Dave Anderson’s four hits and two RBIs as Jack Glover and Tim Corapi both went deep and combined for six RBIs. Long before this, J-D’s latest slide started with last Monday’s 2-0 defeat to the Corcoran Cougars.

The Red Rams’ hitters never could solve Corcoran pitcher Conor Nolan, whose

complete-game effort included just three hits and four walks allowed as he struck out six.

Combined, J-D’s trio of Marzella, Matt Yonta and Max Bregande were solid, giving up just six total hits. But the Cougars used single runs in the first and fifth innings to move out in front.

Following Tuesday’s heavy rains, J-D was back for Wednesday’s game against Homer – and again could not get on the board in a 12-0 loss to the Trojans.

Marzella pitched and kept Homer off the board until the top of the fifth, when it landed three runs. Nine more runs would follow in the next two innings as Bregande, Kimber and Sinopoli took turns trying to contain the Trojans, without success.

Meanwhile, J-D managed just one hit against the Homer tandem of Brent Quinlan and Zach Blanden as Zephan Cash led the Trojans’ attack with three hits and three RBIs. The most frustrating example, though, may have been Thursday’s 6-3 defeat to Bishop Ludden. Thanks to Yonta’s fine pitching, the Rams led 3-1 going into the top of the seventh, only to see the Gaelic Knights get five runs off Bregande and Tyler Kirwan. Sinopoli and Marzella both had an RBI. The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) is the premier resource for cancer doctors and oncology practices in the USA. They provide data and guidance regarding the treatment of cancer, guidelines for care, cancer research, education and public policy and their membership includes over 27,000 doctors and healthcare providers, worldwide. Dr. Jeffrey Kirshner, physician and partner of Hematology-Oncology Associates (HOA) was chosen to present his most recent research at the 2010 annual meeting. This selection signified recognition of not only the importance of his work but also the quality of its conduct. In addition, he has received the distinct honor to be selected as one of the “Best of ASCO.� “It’s very impressive that one of our physicians was selected,� said Carolyn McAuliffe, Ph.D., Director of HOA’s Clinical Cancer Research. Jeffrey Kirshner, MD authored the study: Prevention of Pegfilgrastim-Induced Bone Pain: A Randomized,

Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial of 510 Cancer Patients. “The results of his study were extremely exciting as many patients are unable to continue aspects of their cancer treatment because of unbearable pain,� states Dr. McAuliffe. Dr. Kirshner’s study offers promise that administration of naproxen can significantly diminish this common side effect of pain.

Dr. Kirshner has served as Principle Investigator of the Hematology Oncology Associates Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) for over 23 years.

This unique research program is aimed at providing research typically conducted at large, urban academic medical facilities to smaller, local communities, allowing cancer patients access to state of the art treatment while remaining close to family.

HOA is the only CCOP in the USA not affiliated with a large academic medical center and is only one of two CCOPs in New York Sate – the other on Long Island.

McHarrie Pointe marks one-year anniversary

By Kelly O’Neill-Rossi You’re never too old to fall in love. Evelyn Cady married her husband, Ralph when she was 80 years old.

“We were friends for 50 years before we were married,” Evelyn said. “I never thought I would marry again but it just happened!” For the next seven years, the newlyweds enjoyed retirement living in Sedona, Arizona.

“We walked one and a half miles every day together. We also enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Mexico,” she said.

Unfortunately, health issues brought them back to Central New York. Soon after, Ralph needed 24-hour nursing care due to complications from a stroke. Evelyn, too, needed assistance with everyday living.

Not only did ESMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s game with J-D get pushed back, so did a non-league encounter with Onondaga, one of a long list of postponements everyone had to deal with.

But the Spartans did get on the field Thursday, beating Fulton 6-3. The game was tied 22 when ESM used single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to go in front for good, tacking on two runs in the seventh for insurance.

CBA returned to action on Wednesday afternoon, going to Austin Park and using a big fourth inning as the key to a 9-7 victory over the Skaneateles Lakers.

J-D golfers remain unbeaten

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@ eaglenewsonline.com All of the area’s girls golf teams were supposed to hit full stride in the last week of April –and at least one of them did so.

Jamesville-DeWitt kept itself undefeated, starting last Monday with a 200-231 victory over the Westhill Warriors.

Kara Capstraw managed a 43 in the soggy conditions at Camillus Country Club, while Lindsay Sherling posted a 49. Nicole Deming had Westhill’s low round of 47.

Following the Tuesday rains, the Red Rams returned on Wednesday and romped past East SyracuseMinoa 187-233, led again by Capstraw, who managed a 41 in the windy conditions.

Victoria Roney added a 48 as Kristin Greiner led the Spartans with a 53.

CBA shot 172 to easily win a three-way match over Skaneaetles (247) and Chittenango (248) at Woodcrest.

Veterans Mary Fletcher and Elisabeth Webber led the way, each shooting 40, while Sarah Kitts posted a 45.

Fayetteville-Manlius saw its ‘B’ team defeat Utica Proctor 184-222 at Green

Lakes. Alexandra Millimaci and Allison Donella each shot 45, while Kayla Pallotta posted a 46. Alexandra Kam and Abby Boduch both shot 48 as Caroline Kam posted a 50.

On the boys side, Manlius-Pebble Hill beat Bishop Ludden 232-241, with Mike Kardjian leading the Trojans as he posted a 42 in windy conditions. Bishop Grimes lost to Fabius-Pompey.

CBA swimmers make waves Christian Brothers Academy swimmers recently competed at a number of highlevel regional and national swim meets. Each swimmer was required to meet high quality time standards in order to participate.

Ruthie Speidel, of Manlius; Zoe McCauley, of Liverpool; Maggie Fletcher, of Fayetteville, Lexy McCauley, of Liverpool; and Josh Lacey, of Syracuse competed against swimmers from Central and Western New York at the Niagara District Age Group Championships held March 17 through 20 in Webster.

Highlights of the meet included Speidel winning the 1000 Free, Lacey taking four second-place finishes and two third-place finishes,

and Fletcher swimming in top 5 or better in all her races, including two second-place finishes. The five swimmers also competed on several relays. Speidel, Fletcher, and Lacey qualified for the Eastern Zone Age Group Championships, but only Lacey accepted the invitation. From March 31 through April 2, Lacey traveled to Webster to compete in four events at this meet against competitors from around the Northeast.

While the others swam at districts, Kathryn Coughlin, of Fayetteville, and Summer Schmitt, of Syracuse, qualified for and swam in the NCSA Jr. Nationals in Orlando, Fla., March 15 through 19. Both Coughlin and Schmitt posted best

times and made finals – each one competing against 18 and unders from across the country. Schmitt’s 100 Fly qualified her for the USA Jr. and Sr. National Short Course Championships.

Coughlin and Schmitt then joined Fletcher and Lacey in Buffalo from March 25 through 27 at the Speedo Eastern Championships to compete against the best swimmers from the Northeast. Coughlin finished fifth and eighth in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, respectively. Schmitt made finals in all five of her events and also finished fifth and eighth in the 100 Fly and 200 Fly, respectively. Schmitt’s 200 Fly was another USA Jr. National Qualifying time.

Quiet for most of the spring, the F-M softball team finally returned on Thursday and got another pitching gem from Amy Bright in a 2-0 shutout of Auburn.

Bright limited the Maroons to two hits and amassed 14 strikeouts with her wide variety of tosses. The Hornets used single runs in the second and fifth innings to move out in front as Katie Muller had two hits, scored a run and earned an RBI. Sam

But the Hornets lost 3-2 to Baldwinsville on Saturday. CBA girls top state poll again, fall to West Genny

By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Before returning to league play, the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team first got an intense measure of itself against the best team in the area.

And in that effort, the Brothers lost, 18-7, to West Genesee last Monday night at Wildcat Stadium in Camillus, unable to keep pace with someone deeper and faster.

WG set a quick tempo right away, and CBA could only try and keep up. Despite a solid first half, though, the Brothers trailed 10-5 at halftime, and its chances diminished during the second half as the Wildcats assumed further control.

In defeat, Taylor Gait managed a three-goal hat trick.

Marisa Romeo scored twice, with Taylor Poplawski and Meg Hannan getting the other goals. WG saw Emily Tripodi amass 12 points, through five goals and seven assists, while Erica Geremia found the net six times and Katey Hart had three goals and five assists. Courtney Henderson managed 13 saves.

Ironically, this came just as CBA reclaimed the top spot in the state Class C rankings. And while that might not hold up (again), the Brothers rebounded Thursday by putting together a 17-10 victory over LaFayette.

Steadily, CBA increased its margin on the Lancers by relying on Poplawski and Caroline Webster, both of whom finished with four goals. Romeo scored three times, while

Rachel Perla found the net twice and added an assist. Gait, Racciatti and Kara Dell’uomo had one goal apiece.

As this went on, the CBA boys lacrosse team moved above the .500 mark (5-4) with a 14-6 win over Onondaga.

In what may have been the season’s best all-around effort, the Brothers outscored the Tigers in every period, any OCS run thwarted by the work of goalie Dom Facciponte, who amassed 16 saves.

Offensively, Cody Radziewicz led the way, with five goals and one assist. Nick Papayanakos and Shane Murphy each scored three times, while Willie Walker and Jack O’Brien each had one goal and one assist. Evan Adamo also converted.

F-M tennis fights off Baldwinsville, 5-2

At last, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys tennis team surrendered points in 2011 – but not its epic win streak.

The Hornets got a real test from Baldwinsville on a windy Thursday afternoon, but still did enough to beat the Bees 5-2 and run the win streak to 193 matches in a row.

It helped, of course, that F-M dominated singles play.

Between them, Nick Westergaard, Wilbert Geng and Mike Mintskovsky lost just two total games in wins over, respectively, Jack Jeffrey, Tyler Shaban and Matt Rothenhoefer.

B’ville concentrated its top players in doubles – and it halfworked. Dan and James Miron lost to Tom Hamm and Dan Kot 6-1, 6-3, while Sam Badalian and Alex Martin had a 7-6, 6-4 defeat to Alec Funicello and Grady Schmidt.

To counter, F-M had Eric Rosenthal and Scott Trobert sweep past Cody Buck and Matt McKee 6-2, 6-0, while Alex McCarthy and Kunal Sangani had a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kevin Pregent and Kevin Thompson.

Jamesville-DeWitt, back from its spring break, won three times last week, starting when it beat Mexico last Monday in a rain-abbreviated 4-0 match.

Abraham Davis and Erik Davis had enough time to post straight-set singles wins. In doubles, Andrew Lee and David Zhang beat Andrew DiSanto and Lucas Fanning 6-1, 6-1, while Amir Nazem and Steve Procopio handled Jacob Deno and Nick

After the Tuesday deluge, it cleared up on Wednesday – and J-D won again, this time withstanding a serious challenge from Homer to beat the Trojans 5-2.

With the doubles matches split, the Rams dominated in singles play. Abraham Davis beat Riley Bauer 6-3, 6-0, while Erik Davis defeated Scott McLaughlin 6-0, 6-3. Reed Tso worked through a tough second set, but still got a 6-1, 7-5 win over Keefe Garrett.

Lee and Zhang fell in doubles to Jeff Eves and Cassie Garrison 6-3, 6-7, 6-3. However, Amir Nazem and Steve Procopio handled Bob Chambrone and Matt Schrader 6-3, 6-3, while Noah Kaplan and Jim Quartier got past Allen Perry and Jack Stokoe 6-3, 6-1.

Then J-D took out Chittenango 6-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Zhou fought past Josh Carpenter 6-3, 7-6, while Abraham Davis and Jack Alexander both got singles wins, too. The doubles teams of Tso-Erik Davis and Nazem-Procopio both prevailed in straight sets.

East Syracuse-Minoa was close again in last Monday’s 4-3 defeat to Cortland. Parker Stone swept Kyle Fussner 6-0, 6-0, with Brandon Stone also dominant in a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Jim Williams.

Tyler Underwood overcame an early deficit to outlast Kyle Davis 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, but the Purple Tigers won all the doubles matches in straight sets.

The Spartans fell to Fulton by that same 4-3 margin on Thursday afternoon. Again, Underwood, Parker Stone and

Brandon Stone prevailed in singles, all in straight sets, but Brandon Stone and Tyler Rosso came up just short seeking the clinching point in a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 doubles defeat to Mark Bailey and Tyler Crandell.

Manlius-Pebble Hill beat Bishop Grimes on Friday by a score of 4-1. In singles, the Trojans saw Jon Koss beat Mike Bespiaty 6-0, 6-1 and Ethan Rothschild top Greg Ostaszewski 6-1, 7-5. The Cobras countered with Matt Miller beating Justin Oh 6-4, 7-5.

Both doubles matches went in MPH’s favor. Tristan Amond and Tyler Greco earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Christian Freeman and Matt Leggiero, while Ryley Amond and Wes Sandstrom topped Ryan Biel and Nai Mayen 6-1, 6-4.

Before that, Grimes beat Onondaga 4-1 on Wednesday, watching Bespiaty, Ostaszewski and Miller win straight-set singles matches. Biel and Mayen teamed in doubles for a 75, 6-3 decision over the Tigers’ duo of Eric Rush and Alexis Smith.

The Cobras also won the rematch with OCS 3-2 on Thursday, Bespiaty topping Nathan Kelly 6-3, 6-4 as Ostazewski dominated Rush 6-1, 6-1. Biel and Mayen had a 6-4, 6-3 win over Smith and Sarah Grillo.

Finally back on Thursday, CBA won a pair of 5-0 matches over Marcellus to improve to 3-1. All the matches were single sets to 10 games, with the trio of Colin Nardella, Matt Nardella and Alex Ojugbeli each winning with ease in singles. Drew Derrenbacker and Barnes Werner worked longer for a 10-5 win over Shane Barner and Brian Kershaw.

F-M track sweeps to Chittenango Invitational titles

In the girls meet, the Hornets edged Jamesville-DeWitt by a single point, 100 to 99, and it was just as close on the boys side, where F-M, with 69 points, fended off Ilion (67 points) to finish in front.

Of course, the girls Hornets had compete before Chittenango at the prestigious Penn Relays, in Philadelphia, Pa. There, the distance medley relay team of Katie Sischo, Heather Martin, Courtney Chapman and Jillian Fanning finished in 11 minutes, 34.46 seconds, setting a new Section III record for that event.

And another sectional record fell at Chittenango, in the 1,600 sprint medley, where Sischo and Martin joined Molly Levy and Heather Zazzara to win in 4:11.45, more than 17 seconds clear of runner-up Jordan-Elbridge.

Of those 100 points, 30 came in the main event, the Fleet Feet Mile, where F-M swept the top five spots. Sischo won in 4:55.97, edging Fanning (4:56.79), while Chapman was third (4:58.06), Katie Brislin took fourth (5:10.31) and Emily McGur-

rin was fifth in 5:24.29.

It didn’t stop there, either. Martin tore through the 400meter dash in 58.08 seconds, with Zazzara second in 1:00.11.

Maggie Malone won the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 7:35.05, with Alana Pearl third in 7:58.15.

Isabelle Carapella was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 18.83 seconds and helped Levy, Hannah Lee and Odelia Ryan get third in the 4x100 relay in 52.92 seconds. F-M got fifth in the distance medley.

F-M’s boys saw Ryan Jones win the 100-meter dash in 11.31 seconds. Nick Ryan took second (4:21.54) to Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins (4:19.07) in the Fleet Feet Mile, with Mark McGurrin fifth and Ben Thomas sixth.

Of course, Thomas joined Andrew Roache, Andrew Veilleux and Jules Wellner as F-M won the distance medley relay in 11:23.71, more than 23 seconds ahead of runner-up CBA. Jones, Veilleux, Austin Perez and Langston Lightcap won the 1,600 sprint medley in 3:47.69, 1.16 seconds ahead of JordanElbridge.

Owen Strong got second place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:11.92, while Langston Lightcap (54.60 seconds) and A.J. Blitz (54.61 seconds) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash. The Hornets were also fourth in the 4x100 relay in 49.27 seconds.

Before this, the Hornets smoothly worked their way to vic-

tories in last Wednesday’s meet against Nottingham to stay atop the CNY Counties League American division standings.

The girls Hornets beat the Bulldogs 87-46, watching Malone take the 1,500-meter run in 5:10 and helping Brislin, McGurrin and Mary Bucklin take the 4x800 relay in 11:26. McGurrin took first in the 800-meter run in 2:27.7.

Carapella prevailed twice, following up a victory in the 100meter hurdles (18.0 seconds) by beating the field in the 400meter hurdles in 1:16.0. Jhoville Pommells threw the shot put 27 feet and Carolina Colon had a top triple jump of 27 feet.

Zazzara needed 26.8 seconds to win the 200-meter dash and shared first with Christine Lavoie in the 400-meter dash (both finished in 1:00.6) she teamed with Carapella, Levy and Hannah Smith to claim the 4x400 relay in 4:25.

On the boys side, F-M prevailed over Nottingham 83-48, as Jones won three times. He sprinted 100 meters in 11 seconds flat, had a top long jump of 18 feet 2 inches and beat the field in the triple jump, going 34 feet 6 inches.

Ryan led the distance-running sweep, taking the mile (4:31) and 800 (2:08.2), while Wellner won the 3,200-meter run in 10:18. Whitecap, aside from winning the 400 spring in 52.5 seconds, teamed with Roache, McGurrin and Eric Billinson to run the 4x800 in 8:42. Perez needed just 22.7 seconds to dominate the 200.

Mary Tiedemann, 93

Family was her highest priority Mary Loretta Enright Tiedemann, 93, passed away Thursday April 21, 2011, in Jamesville. She was born in Brooklyn, NY. The greatest love in her life was her husband, Robert, to whom she was married for over 60 years and who passed away in 2004.

Constantly in her thoughts and prayers, her twin sister, Lucille is of Somerset, NJ. Her family was her highest priority. Mary had experienced and endured the very worst of the Great Depression, and she consequently stressed to her children the need for a strong faith, education and hard work.

CNYSA Regatta to be held on Cazenovia Lake

By Jean Doering At Willowbank Yacht Club, plans are underway to host the CNY Sailing Association Annual Regatta, the weekend of July 9-10, 2011.

The “Centrals,” as it is commonly known, is an important date in the regional sailing calendar and will bring participants from 30 sailing clubs to partake in races that weekend. In the next few weeks, a series of articles about the various fleets that will be seen competing on Cazenovia Lake, will be featured.

There will be three race courses set on the lake, to concurrently race boats from possibly ten different fleets. The following classes are expected: Lightening, Laser, Laser Radial, Finn, Sunfish, 420, Optis, O’penBic, Rhodes Bantam, Flying Scot and Flying Dutchman.

The Centrals is an inter-generational regatta, bringing junior sailors, as well as seasoned racers to compete. Being recognized

by U.S. Sailing as a Regional Sailing Association means that sailors both Junior and Senior members are encouraged to use the Regionals to qualify for U.S. Sailing National Championships.

One of Willowbank’s former Junior Fleet members, David Grogono, went on to the Olympics to race a Windsurfer for the Cayman Islands.

The CNY Sailing Association, formerly Central New York Yacht Racing Association, was founded in 1931. The first regatta took place that year at Seneca Yacht Club.

The following information, taken from Seneca Yacht Club’s history, is an account of that event, which will make our regatta committee thankful for one class designs, fiberglass hulls and lightweight trailers and dollies: August 27, 28, and 29, 1931 the combined first annual regatta of the CNYYRA and of the new twelfth District of the Star Class was held concurrently at the Seneca Yacht Club. A 75’ Coast Guard Cutter from Oswego was present to serve as Committee Boat. It was a strenuous regatta for the Stars, as they raced at 10 a.m. in the CNYYRA and 2:15 p.m. in the twelfth District Championships. A strong south wind ended in a terrific thunderstorm during the Star Race the afternoon of the second day. A heavy Northwester on Saturday enlivened the occasion and inspired a healthy respect for Seneca Lake in the visiting sailors.

cocktail parties, etc. Many new problems had to be solved and precedents were set which are now routine items for putting on regattas.

There were no one design classes: except the Stars which included boats from Cooperstown and the Syracuse Yacht and Country Club. The race committee had great difficulty in grouping boats from local one design classes to give good racing. Seneca’s 17’ One Designs proved to be well matched with Owasco’s 10’ Catboats.

Transportation of boats between lakes for regattas was a serious problem. There were many regattas on Long Island Sound and elsewhere along the coast where boats could be sailed or towed to the scene of the regatta, but this was the first known attempt to assemble a large fleet from distant land-locked lakes.

Light trucks and a few homemade trailers were used for the centerboard boats; but the Stars, weighing nearly a ton, offered a major problem. If a marine railway was available as at the old Fay & Bowen Boat Co. in Geneva, the boat could be floated onto a cradle, hauled out and skidded up on a truck and gingerly

driven to the launching site where another marine railway was required for the reverse process.

Some geniuses at the Syracuse Yacht and Country Club, aided by a blacksmith, built a trailer from a four-wheel Hudson chassis with a six-inch gap in the rear thru which the keel could be coaxed. The trailer was backed down a sharply shelving beach into 4 ½ feet of water, where the launching crew in bathing suits struggled to hold the boat in exact position while the trailer was dragged out till the boat settled solidly in position.

It was harder to back the 3,000 pound trailer plus boat out into 4 ½ feet of water to launch and both operations were tricky if there were waves of any size. However, the center of gravity was low and boats could be towed at good speed. Copies of these trailers were built here and at other clubs having Star fleets, and quickly spread all over the country.

Young Playwrights Festival names Fâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ville committee to hold plant sale works to be performed Eight area high school students have been chosen as the winners of the 13th Annual Young Playwrights Festival at Syracuse Stage.

The winning works will be performed by students from the drama department in Syracuse Universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s College of Visual and Performing Arts at a staged reading at 7:30 p.m.

Monday May 9 in the Storch Theatre at Syracuse Stage, 820 East Genesee St. The event is free and open to the public.

Winners of the 2011 Young Playwrights Festival were chosen from more than 100 submissions from area high school students. A panel at Syracuse Stage chose 13 semifinalists to participate in a writing workshop. Those semifinalists revised and resubmitted their scripts for final consideration.

Thinking about adopting, fostering?

Informational meetings for prospective foster, adoptive parents set for May

Families in Onondaga County who are considering foster or adoptive parenting are invited to attend informational meetings offered in Onondaga County from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday May 12 at DeWitt Community Library in Shoppingtown Mall and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday May 18 at Baldwinsville Public Library, 33 East Genesee St. in Baldwinsville.

Registration is required. Attendees of a Learn to Be a Foster/Adoptive Parent meeting will learn about some of the requirements for and the process of becoming certified as a foster/adoptive family.

Onondaga County is especially in need of homes for children 12 and older, sibling groups and children with special medical needs, including mental health and developmental issues.

Attendance at these meetings is not required, but recommended to families interested in completing the 11-week pre-certification program. This program prepares families for fostering/adopting by teaching agency procedures and home expectations.

On Saturday May 14, the Fayetteville Beautification Committee will be holding its First Annual Plant Sale at the Fayetteville Towne Center.

The sale will run from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Plants on sale will be from Debrucqueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Green Houses in

Canastota. There will be a large assortment of annuals, perennials and herbs.

Also, there will be raffles going on throughout the day.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to further advance the on-going beautification projects in the Village of Fayetteville.
