Syracuse Woman Magazine launches debut edition this week County Exec Mahoney featured as cover story

In a few days, Central New Yorkers will have a brand new “glossy” to get their hands on. Syracuse Woman Magazine is the “younger sister” of the already successful Rochester Woman Magazine, which was first published 10 years ago. RWM publishers Barbara McSpadden and Kelly Breuer bought the magazine in August 2009. A few months later, they re-launched the publication with a new look and feel. “Ever since we launched Rochester Woman Magazine last January, we’ve been asked to bring the publication to Syracuse,” McSpadden said. “We

As the region’s municipalities discuss a potential fire district, village of Manlius officials realize they face a major project to improve health and safety conditions at its two fire stations. The village has contracted with Ron Graner, the principal at RFG Fire Rescue Consulting of Canton, Ga. to study, as part of the formation of a consolidated fire district, the working conditions at the fire stations. Manlius Fire Chief Paul Whorrall said the conditions, which include a leaky roof and other infrastructure deficiencies at Station 2 on Pompey Center Road, pose an immediate health threat to any personnel utilizing the station. In an e-mail correspondence to Whorrall, Graner detailed the visible presence of mold in the small bunkroom and small lounge area. Also, the lounge had a stench of moisture or possible mold and Graner advised Whorrall to immediately seal off affected areas to prevent further contamination. Graner said he could not comment on his findings until the final report was presented to the municipalities involved in the potential fire district. Graner, who has more than 30 years of career and volunteer fire service, public safety leadership and management experience in See Hazards, page 8

Local developer proposes 16 ‘boomer bungalows’ in village of Fayetteville Zone change must be approved to move project forward By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com Developers Ryan and Tom Goodfellow of Mill Street Venture, LLC, are proposing to build a 16-unit residential neighborhood at the old McIntire Paper Mill site in the village of Fayetteville. A zoning change from Industrial to Planned Residential Development must be approved for further consideration. Architect Ed Harrington gave a brief project overview at the Jan. 24 village board meeting. McIntyre Commons, located at the corner of Mill and Clinton streets, would consist of 16 single-family, one-story bungalow homes, about 1,200 square feet in size. The “boomer bungalows,” as Harrington referred to them, would be targeted toward empty-nesters, or families that are downsizing. Each unit would have two bedrooms, two baths, a porch and a full basement. A water generator would be installed by the developers to power the area’s streetlights. “This particular site lends itself to many of the principals of the new urbanism,” said Ryan Goodfellow, using as an example its walkability to the library, parks and nearby shops.

The bungalows are expected to be priced under $250,000 – and that’s on the high end, said Tom Goodfellow. Mayor Mark Olson said the developer has asked the village for replacement sidewalks along the outside of the property and a stop sign at the corner of Clinton and Beech streets. During a public hearing session, residents’ concerns included a higher volume in traffic, the topography of the site in relation to the Ledyard Canal, the proximity to other homes nearby and how the development would change the neighborhood dynamics. “[What attracted me] to Beech Street is the character of the village,” said resident Grant Jackson. “Judging from what you’re showing, it looks cookie-cuttered.” Two variations were shown. Unit A featured a garage located at the rear of the home; Unit B places the garage next to the front porch. Tom O’Shea, a member of the village parks commission, said he was not opposed to the development as long as it was done right. He said he wants to make sure nothing obstructs the flow of the canal, which runs through the property. Board members approved the proposal be sent to the Onondaga County Planning Board for review. The developers will next have to go before the village planning board. The public hearing will remain open for the next scheduled meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday Feb. 7 at the Fayetteville Village Hall.

A lesson on soldier LaFayette – and your village By Jean Edminster Marquis de LaFayette was a French soldier who fought for American independence and was a leader in the French Revolution. He actually thought of the American Revolution as a means to win military glory by fighting against England for France. He became a good friend to George Washington. In 1777, he was appointed a young general in the American Army and was instrumental in the successful negotiations that eventually won American independence. His cooperation with Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson greatly benefited America and France. LaFayette became a hero in two lands. LaFayette inherited a fortune at age 13 when his mother and grandfather died, but he lost his fortune and social position because of his liberal beliefs. In appreciation for all he did as an American officer, a huge tract of land was awarded to him in Louisiana. Congress also voted to grant him $200,000 and a township in Florida. Since he had lost his French properties, he sold most of this American land and returned to France, becoming one of the most powerful leaders there from 1789-1791. His unwillingness to work with the corrupt governing powers led him to lose his popularity by 1791. Late in his life, he spent time in a cold, damp, rat infested prison. His wife and children requested that they be placed in the cell with him rather than be away from him. He died in 1834, but he is remembered in America to this day. A

Random Thoughts: A Super Bowl for the true fan By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com Do not read this column any further if you want a prognostication for Super Bowl XLV. It’s just too tough to call, too close. Great, reasonable, fact-based arguments can, and will, be made for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers before they kick it off in Jerry Jones’ massive pleasure palace in Arlington, Texas. Especially refrain from proceeding if you want any analysis of things that just don’t matter in the larger picture. Expensive commercials, party plans, pre-game and halftime entertainment, celebrities on a red carpet – just stop it already. None of that has anything to do with what I really care about. What we have before us Sunday night is a football purist’s dream. Two franchises of immense history and honor, from places that cherish the game, with fans as loud, passionate and loyal as any in American sports. Here’s hoping they fill Cowboys Stadium with a joyful noise that drowns out all of the Super Bowl’s corporate attempts to stifle them. This immense devotion was not something that came overnight. You won’t see many bandwagons among the Steelers and Packers faithful. They have both enjoyed plenty of grand moments through the decades – but also a lot of pain. Given Pittsburgh’s remarkable success in the Super Bowl era, it’s shocking to consider how bad the Rooney family’s cherished heirloom once was. From the start in 1933 to 1972, there was zero, zilch, nada championships. The franchise had to merge twice during World War II just to survive. The long list of personnel mistakes (cutting John Unitas was the worst) made any Steeler fan cringe. That same story of survival and struggle marked Green Bay’s history, too, as the last of the small-town teams that survived the NFL’s early years. They had

13 straight losing seasons before Vince Lombardi guy showed up. And after he retired, the Packers had to wait a quarter-century for the arrivals of Mike Holmgren, Brett Favre and Reggie White to rise to the top again. These two teams are here partly because their front offices know how to build a team and, at times, make decisions that aren’t initially popular, but pay off in the larger scheme. The Steelers have only made three coaching hires in the last 42 years. Each time, they turned to guys under 40 without any head coaching experience. You could say Chuck Noll worked out. So did Bill Cowher. Same thing with Mike Tomlin, a hire many Pittsburgh partisans questioned in 2007. And some still won’t give him the total credit, saying Tomlin inherited Ben Roethlisberger and defensive wizard Dick LeBeau. But Tomlin is just an impressive coach and man, someone that has become evident over time, and he just may snag a second ring, something Cowher couldn’t pull off. Then there’s the Roethlisberger saga. Ben was certainly guilty of doing young, dumb things, and to assume anything more without legal proof is wrong. Still, many called on the Steelers to dump him for PR’s sake. They did not, and Ben has begun the slow, painful process of character rehab that, in fairness, will take years, not months, to complete. Over in Green Bay, the circumstances were different. A whole lot of Packer partisans wanted to run coach Mike McCarthy or, especially, GM Ted Thompson out of town when it had the nerve to say no to the wavering Brett Favre in 2008 and give Aaron Rodgers a chance. Yes, Favre was a Green Bay legend, but Thompson put the team first, and as Favre’s late-career saga, the good and sordid parts, played out in New York and Minnesota, Rodgers kept his mouth shut and steadily turned into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks, justifying Thompson’s faith in him. Madison Row still in early construction stages By Joseph Raite The village of Manlius Planning Board made little new headway on the Madison Rowe project, a proposed development on the corner of Highbridge Road and Stickley Drive, during its Jan. 25 meeting. “We are very sensitive to what’s happening at the gateway of the village,” said Mayor Mark-Paul Serafin on the progress of the project. “And to have a willing developer to follow our guidelines and work with us, and the planning board has been diligent every step of the way, so we’re moving along.” Developer Michael Dougherty, president of Mayflower, Cos., elaborated on construction plans, but issues of concern were raised over property ownership, storm drainage and building design. Dougherty went over construction plans that will be divided into two phases. Phase I will focus on the site closest to the corner of Highbridge Road and Stickley Drive and will include improvements to Stickley Drive and the village’s

municipal lot off the same road. Phase II will develop the property that borders Limestone Garden Apartments on Highbridge road. The property issue hinges on the Department of Transportation’s ownership of the sidewalk. The planning board intends for the Madison Rowe development site to be pedestrian-friendly public space. In alignment with these intentions, the board envisions an eight-foot green area with trees between the sidewalk and Highbridge Road. The fear is that DOT ownership of the sidewalk could facilitate future lane expansion on Highbridge Road. The planning board, in conjunction with Michael Dougherty and Mayflower, hopes to negotiate a deal with the DOT to prevent any lane expansion plans that would encroach on pedestrian space and safety. Concerns were also raised over storm drainage by Planning Board Member Matt Hodinger. In particular, Hodinger is concerned with storm runoff that has historically flooded the parking lot of Manlius Mart, at 315 Fayette St. Doug

Miller, of Miller Engineers, who is hired as a consultant by Mayflower to review construction plans, assured the board that proper steps have been accounted for to prevent any damaging storm runoff. Various members of the planning board were concerned over design details of a proposed Key Bank on the Madison Rowe development site. The design of Key Bank is the responsibility of Key Bank’s architects in Cleveland, Ohio and not Mayflower. The planning board also expressed concerns over the pattern and color scheme of bricks intended for the bank, among other issues, that would fit into the village’s aesthetic requirements. Dougherty will pass along notes of the planning board’s concerns to Key Bank’s architects. No movements were made at the Jan. 25 meeting. Dougherty will meet with the planning board again on Tuesday Feb. 15. Joseph Raite is a regular contributing writer to the Eagle Bulletin.

And this season, when a laundry list of injuries could have, or should have, crippled the Pack’s championship hopes, McCarthy kept his team going, and Thompson kept finding guys (think James Starks) to plug the holes. It all led to Green Bay’s first NFC title in 13 years.

In so many ways, this Super Bowl is a fun football game to ponder. Rodgers has put up, at times, incredible playoff numbers, but it’s Roethlisberger that owns the two Super Bowl rings and 11-2 post-season record, plus an uncanny ability to make the big play exactly when it’s

needed. Then you have the two defenses, brilliantly put together by LeBeau and Green Bay counterpart Dom Capers. Both are 3-4, both force lots of turnovers and both, as personified by James Harrison and Clay Matthews, can hit you hard.

For all of the history they have generated, the Steelers and Packers have never met in the post-season until now. What a time to do it, in a Super Bowl where all the pretensions and excesses should just take a one-year holiday. Let us have this game, with these fans, and let’s just enjoy it.

Hercules Candy has formula for longtime success By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, consider buying your loved one some premium chocolate treats locally-made since the late 1800s. Hercules Candy Company, a family-owned business on its third generation, is located in a quaint house on a neighborhood street in the village of East Syracuse. The store offers a variety of sugar-based candies such as peanut brittle and gourmet chocolates for the sweet toothed. According to co-owner Terry Andrianos, the two most popular buys are the hand-decorated assorted chocolates and the chocolate potato chips, consistently made with sturdy Ruffles Ridges. The local candymaker uses a Swiss-based formula to make its chocolate. In contrast to those that are commercially-made, Hercules does not use paraffin, a widely-used ingredient found in many chocolates to give it a shiny appearance. “The ingredients of real chocolate are sugar, cocoa butter, chocolate liquor (the most concentrated part of the cocoa bean), milk, vanilla and lecithin, a natural preservative, Andrianos said. “That’s it. Cheaper chocolates will replace the good ingredients, she said, using palm kernel oil instead of cocoa butter, or using whey solids as opposed to fresh whole milk. “It’s still a good-looking chocolate but it won’t be a good tasting chocolate, she said. Hercules doesn’t cut corners with ingredients

or techniques used to make chocolate smooth and creamy. “If you have identical ingredients on two types of chocolate – one is smooth and one’s a little grainy – the smooth one is conched longer, said Andrianos, noting its chocolate has already been conched by its wholesaler. “We just have to temper it, which means melting it slowly and gently over a double boiler and then completely cooling it. The technique contributes to the chocolate’s creaminess. Hercules makes just enough candy to keep its shelves full so customers know their purchase is always fresh, no matter what time of year. Christmas and Easter are its busiest seasons. “Valentine’s Day is more of a last-minute holiday, Andrianos said. “We get lines. It’s a real crush that one week. Holidays play a huge role on the store’s individual retail sales, but Hercules is a favorite to corporate functions, too. Companies call in advance to order candy for in-house events, tradeshows and anniversaries. The store also attracts brides-to-be year-round, who consult with Andrianos for wedding favors. Hercules offers a unique line from which to choose, including personalized boxes for chocolates, invitations, matches, napkins and place cards. It also carries wishing wells and cake knives. The family-run store, in its third generation, also gives tours to organizations such the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. On Saturdays, when applicable, families can watch the candy being made. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to hold Myeloma family support groups

Le Moyne to present Mark Twain’s, ‘Is he Dead?’

As part of the Le Moyne College’s year-long celebration marking the 100-year anniversary of Mark Twain’s death, the department of theater arts, in conjunction with the Boot and Buskin Theatre Group will present the play, “Is He Dead?” Written in 1898 in Vienna as Twain emerged from one of the deepest depressions of his life, the play shows its author’s gift for humor operating at its most energetic. Le Moyne’s performance schedule

New York, is expected to report his findings by mid-month before a final report is developed. The study sponsors are the towns of Manlius and Pompey, the villages of Manlius, Fayetteville and Minoa and the Kirkville Fire District. According to its company statement, RFG Fire Rescue Consulting, which has offices in Georgia and New York, specializes in the development of projects that will achieve savings and improve municipal efficiency through shared services, cooperative agreements, mergers, consolidations and dissolutions. “How can we do our job when we’re threatened,” said Whorrall, who noted the corps of responders at the Pompey Center Road station is volunteers. The hazardous condition certainly has the attention of the mayor and village board.

“We (the village board) are very much aware of Station 2’s present problems as well as future problems,” said trustee and deputy mayor Harold Hopkinson, who also serves as the liaison to the fire department. “They must be corrected soon, regardless of the direction the study takes us.” While Whorrall would like to have something more than a band-aid for the fire stations, village officials are proceeding with caution. Doug Miller of Miller Engineers of Manlius has been contacted to provide, with Whorrall’s input, a scope of necessary services and repairs for presentation at the board’s Feb. 8 meeting. Once Graner’s reporting is completed, Mayor MarkPaul Serafin said he is confident the village board will move forward in a timely matter.

That would please the fire chief, who said the station’s moisture/mold problems are nothing new to the board. Also, additional improvements are needed at each station, Whorrall said, for meeting, storage and office space. “They are looking at the current situation,” Whorrall said. “We are looking at the next forty years.” He added, “It has become embarrassing. The village has got to make a decision on which way to go.” Hopkinson added, “I feel certain the mayor and village board will take all necessary steps required to correct any hazardous conditions.”

going 30 feet 7 ž inches. Ally Fox had a fourth-place long jump of 15 feet 3 inches. Working together, Fox, Vasilou, Fuller and Danielle Doss earned a victory in the 4x200 relay in 1:53.79, beating runnerup Homer by more than three seconds. In the 4x400, Doss joined Liz Pieri, Katy Pieri and Noelle Novakowski as J-D prevailed in 4:24.33, with New Hartford 2.60 seconds behind. More points were attained in the 300-meter dash, where Liz Pieri won in 44.30 seconds and Katy Pieri was third in 45.29 seconds. Ameena Dye, Becca Doss, Hannah Stefl and Avery Share were third in the 4x800 (10:30.52), as Dye, on her own, took third in the 1,500 (5:09.48). Fox was third in the 55 sprint (7.76 seconds), with Vasilou in fourth.Taylor Cook got fifth in the 55-meter hurdles, with Becca Doss fifth in the 600. CBA was fifth in last Friday’s Class B championships with 32 points. Betty Etheredge won the long jump, going 15 feet 8 inches, and matched Clinton’s Eliza Bell by having a top triple jump of 33 feet 8 inches. Corey Hucko was third in the 3,000 in 11:27.58, with Michaela Gildemeyer third in the 600 in 1:46.46. Gabriel Schugg was fifth in the 1,000.

Has the cloak of invincibility disappeared from the Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team? First came the pair of losses at the Jan. 21-22 Prime Time Shootout in West Virginia. Then, on Friday night, the Red Rams’ undisputed status as an overwhelming Section III Class A favorite took a serious hit when it went to Cortland and took a 55-51 defeat to the Purple Tigers. It’s been a long time since J-D has lost three consecutive games, no matter the context. And the Rams had prevailed in 21 straight OHSL Freedom division contests, the last defeat coming to CBA in 2009. But Cortland was a worthy opponent, having roared out to a 12-1 start this season, its only loss coming to CBA on Jan. 19. And the Purple Tigers were at home, playing in front of 1,000 loud and passionate fans ready to see the three-time state Class A champions put to the test. J-D’s defense had a solid

first quarter, but it only led 12-9 at the end of that frame. Sensing a big opportunity, Cortland seized it, controlling the tempo and, more importantly, hitting outside shots as it sprinted ahead, 29-25, by halftime. Even with a faster pace in the third period, J-D could not quite catch up, still trailing 43-41 going to the final period, where

In very different ways, the Fayetteville-Manlius and Jamesville-DeWitt girls indoor track and field teams found their way to Section III championships Saturday at Colgate University’s Sanford Field House. The Hornets relied on n its deep and incomparable pool of distance runners and amassed 108 points to fend off CiceroNorth Syracuse (100 points) and 11 other challengers for the top spot. Meanwhile, the Red Rams left imprints in many different events, finishing with 111 points, well clear of Westhill/Bishop Ludden (80 points) and the rest of the field. F-M went 1-2, and picked up 18 points, in the 600-meter run, where Heather Martin prevailed in 1:37.24, just ahead of Sischo (1:38.55) in second place. Martin also won the 300meter dash in 43.34 seconds and Natalie Zazzara was fourth (45.15 seconds). Also, the Hornets had 24 points in a single event – the 1,000meter run. There, Katie Sischo won in a time of 3:02.63, with

Jillian Fanning second in 3:02.77 as Leah Monsour took fourth place and Emily McGurrin finished fifth. And 18 more points were earned in the 1,500-meter run, where Fanning edged West Genesee’s Laura Leff, 4:42.92 to 4:43.21, for the top spot, with Monsour third in 4:56.25 and McGurrin again in fifth place. Maggie Malone was third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:41.57 and Jenna Farrell (11:07.10) was fifth. Add to that a 4x800 relay where Fanning, Sischo, Malone and McGurrin roared to victory in 9:55.31 (no one else broke the 10-minute mark), and a 4x400 relay where Zazzara, Martin, Isabelle Carapella and Molly Levy prevailed in 4:14.60, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the field, and F-M had most of the points it needed. The Hornets added a fourth in the 4x200 relay as Jhoville Pommels took fifth in the shot put. J-D, on its way to the top, won two field events. Danielle Doss cleared 9 feet to win the pole vault, where Katy Pieri (7 feet 6 inches) was third. Sierra Vasilou threw the shot put 34 feet 2 Ÿ inches to beat the field by more than two feet. Maggie Fuller contributed more points by tying East Syracuse-Minoa’s Nina Zesky for second in the high jump, both clearing 5 feet, whle Liz Pieri got second in the triple jump by

NOTICE OF SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT MEETING OF THE VOTERS OF THE FAYETTEVILLEMANLIUS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF THE FAYETTEVILLEMANLIUS CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT HEREBY GIVES NOTICE that pursuant to a Resolution adopted by the Board of Education of the District on the 10th day of January, 2011, a special meeting of the qualified voters of said School District County of Onondaga, State of New York, will be held at the Fayetteville-Manlius Elementary School Cafeteria, in Fayetteville, New York, in said District, on March 1, 2011, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. prevailing time, for the purpose of voting upon the following proposition: PROPOSITION Shall the Board of Education undertake a project consisting of the demolition and reconstruction of the existing bus maintenance facility and existing transportation offices, renovations at Fayetteville Elementary School, Wellwood Middle School, Eagle Hill Middle School and High School and athletic field drainage and irrigation improvements and sod replacement at the High School including, for all of the foregoing, site improvements, original furnishings, fixtures and equipment, architectural fees, and all other necessary costs incidental to such work and expend therefore a total sum not to exceed $10,502,500, which is estimated to be the total maximum cost thereof, and pay for the project by using $2,600,000 from the Capital Reserve approved by the District’s voters on May 18, 2010 and by the levy of a tax which is hereby voted for the project in the amount of $7,902,500, subject to available State Aid, which tax shall be levied and collected in annual installments in such years and in such amounts as may be determined by the Board of Education and in

points apiece. Back home at Buddy Wleklinski Court, the CBA girls handled Homer 5637, steadily pulling away in the second half as Michelle Wiese led the way with 16 points. Marisa Romeo (14 points) and Kelsey Johnson (12 points) also hit double figures.

lead. That margin remained steady the rest of the way as three Rams scored in double figures. In stark contrast to the J-D drama, Christian Brothers Academy breezed to wins over Homer on both the male and female sides after not playing for more than a week. The boys Brothers (9-2)

with seven seconds to play, Reagan’s pair of free throws clinched Cortland’s big win. In defeat, DaJuan Coleman only managed 12 points and Tyler Cavanaugh struggled, too, with just eight points. Pete Drescher led J-D with 14 points. The biggest irony of the J-D’s boys’ struggles was that, back home, the girls edition of the Red Rams was recording its biggest win of the season as it took out Cortland, the defending Section III Class A champions, in a 51-40 decision. J-D only carried a 6-6 record into this game, while Cortland was 8-3. What was more, the Purple Tigers’ top player, junior Maggie Brown, was coming off a 41-point performance in an overtime win over East Syracuse-Minoa earlier in the week. But the Rams didn’t care about such gaudy figures. Instead, it applied tremendous pressure and made Brown work very hard just to get 19 points, not even half the ESM total. And it did even better against Cortland’s other top player, Nacirema Mann, holding her to four points. On the offensive side, J-D made its decisive move in the second quarter, outscoring the Purple Tigers 17-9 as it seized a 26-19 halftime
