ew things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the weather warms, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. ✓ Check the area for any needed repairs.

Prepare for outdoor entertaining this summer

When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult a contractor. ✓ Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and

family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie's List to read reviews of his or her work. ✓ Think about closing in a portion of a deck or patio. The use of a canopy, netting or even greenery to protect an entertaining space can help minimize weather-related damage to outdoor furniture. Having a bit of concealment also means you can create a private space that a neighbor or passersby can’t easily view. ✓ Plan well-defined areas. Establish a sitting

nook where guests can gather and talk. Have a bar or serving area where refreshments are made and served. Make sure there is a shaded area for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don't forget to establish a spot for the kids to See Decks on page 2

Leading woman manages construction firm with ease By Farah F. Jadran She drives around Central New York in her silver Suburban ready for meetings with government entities, but in an instant she can ditch the designer heels for the Timberlands in her backseat. “I just never know when I have to be on site and look at land,” said Joy Anthis Weatherup, construction manager and designer. When Joy steps onto a construction site, she’s in charge. Whether the team is working on an electrical phase or a framing stage, and there’s two men or 10, they’re looking to Joy as their leader. Without flat out saying it, Joy is, as are any women in the construction management field, a minority in her profession. However, she’s always been “the only one” for as long as she can remember. Since Joy was a young girl in high school,

she was working with her father for his fencing business, Central Fence. “My father felt like a kid should learn the value of hard work,” she said. So, while other kids were out playing or meeting up with friends, she was at the office with her dad. Joy would work on cost accounting and review blueprints, and her father would even send her to bid openings for large-scale municipal jobs, correctional facilities and airports, nothing residential. “Not only was I extremely young, and basically a little girl…I was uncomfortable at first.” But after a while, she was just one of the guys bidding on a big project. “The best advice I ever got was from my dad,” Joy said. “When I was still in high school he told me, ‘You could have 10 [college] degrees, but the world is full of people…and if you can’t get along with people, it doesn’t matter how educated you are.’”

Joy went on to earn her degree from Le Moyne College, while still working for her father. And since, she has a New York State Certified Women-Owned Business Enterprise. She’s currently in the process of recertifying her business to capitalize on a commercial construction management component of her business. “I love residential work and working with individual families, but there’s a lot going on with commercial and municipal…I’d be remiss if I ignored that.” Because there is a lack of women construction managers, her business has received even more opportunities because of its unique nature. Joy said more than ever, she has been meeting with several consulting agencies and engineering firms to talk to them about how a woman-owned business in construction can help them satisfy See Designing on page 5

Replacing weedy areas one daylily at a time Weeds are plants whose merits are yet to be discovered. Regarding weed control, whatever you do, do it yesterday. The key is to prevent a weed from producing seeds or you’ll have the same problem over and over for years. In the big scheme of things, weeds are pretty significant competitors. Here’s a fun fact: Smooth crabgrass, that stubborn lawn weed, is the ONLY plant that thrives and reproduces in Antarctica! Yikes!

In the end, you’re measured not by how much you undertake, but by what you finally accomplish. It’s far better to clean up a modest area and improve it one step at a time than to try the Weekend Warrior approach of shock and awe. That generally ends with “aw, shucks.” All plants need light to reach their full genetic potential. Desirable plants can be stunted by surrounding weeds that steal light and compete for moisture. After

It’s your money By Sean Sullivan Are you thinking of hiring a contractor to do some home repair? Do you have a plan? Do your homework and avoid getting scammed. 1. Investigate contractors. Just like a job interview, you need to ask your contractors questions, such as do they provide free estimates; how long have they been in business; can they provide references; do they guarantee or warrantee their work; and are they licensed, bonded and/or insured? Get a copy of their insurance policy or certificate of insurance and contact the references they provide. This can be a missed opportunity for important information. 2. Shop around. Many companies give free inspections and written estimates. It’s a good idea to get two or three before choosing a contractor. Be sure to compare costs, materials and methods of work to be done to know what is right for you and your home. The lowest price may not be the best deal for you and what you need for satisfaction. 3. Get a written contract. Review the contract to be sure it includes things like a detailed description of the work that will be done and the materials (including quality) that will be used. The contract should state a starting date and estimated completion date. Make sure the price and payment arrangements are as you discussed with the contractor as well as include any finance charges (if applicable). 4. Don’t be pressured. Ask for the contract ahead of time. You need time to read through it and make sure you understand everything it covers. Don’t sign it if you feel confused or if the contract has missing information (pages), or

Doing home repair? Beware of scams

if it is different from what you discussed. Remember to keep a copy of the signed contract, including the contractor’s insurance information and any guarantees or warrantees of service. 5. Don’t pay until it’s done. After the work is done, make sure you inspect the work and site for completion. Save your final payment until you are satisfied with all work (including cleanup). Here are a few warning signs of a contractor or salesman you should avoid: 1. Someone who knocks on your door or calls to make repairs. 2. Someone that indicates repairs need to be made immediately. 3. Someone who speaks quickly and pressures you to sign immediately. 4. Someone who indicates he or she is in the neighborhood and has extra materials to use on your home. 5. Someone who will give you a discount for referring others only if you sign today. 6. Someone whose offer seems too good to be true. 7. Someone who is not a local business, but is in the area “helping out.” If you have a problem with a home improvement contractor and can’t resolve it yourself, you can file a complaint with the New York State Department of State online at dos.ny.gov or by calling 1-800-697-1220. This and more information on consumer protection can be found on the New York State website, dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection/.

you’ve removed the weeds, remediate those stressed plants with a shot of liquid Neptune’s Harvest Fish and seaweed tonic every two weeks. Summer is the best time of year to enjoy a cold beer, and your plants feel the same. I never waste unused liquids from my mug, coffee cup, iced tea pitcher or water saved from boiling vegetables. It would be a shame to waste these wonderful, free nutrients. Just pour the cooled liquids onto stressed plants that you want to motivate. Once you eliminate the weed competition, recognize that if you don’t plant something in its place, Mother Nature will do it for you. Some of the most colorful and easy choices to plant right now are daylilies. They thrive in dry, wet and everything

‘American Pickers’ stars to visit the Fair

That thing you’ve got stored in the attic because you think it might be worth something? Bring it to the Midway Music Series State at the Great New York State Fair at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, and cast members from the History Channel’s “American Pickers” will tell you whether they think it’s “Treasure or Trash!” Frank Fritz, one of two antiques hunters who travel the country looking for items to restore, and their office manager, Danielle Colby Cushman, will talk about their experiences, show bloopers from the program, take questions from the audience and, after the stage portion of the show, sign autographs and say hello to fans. The heart of the appearance, however, will be the opportunity to have an item checked by Fritz for its potential value. If you are among those “Picked,” he will not tell you what your item is worth or attempt to buy it from you. Instead, he will deliver a simple verdict — it’s either “treasure or trash.” For more information, visit nysfair.org.

between. I love to plant them at the base of mailboxes since they tolerate salt and will live for years. The fastest and easiest way to add interest right now is with reblooming dwarf daylilies. Consider reblooming perennials in place of expensive and disposable annuals. You’ll get blooms all summer with daylilies from the Returns family (Happy Returns, Rosy Returns) and the whole Stella family ranging from yellow to purple to red. Easy to plant and they taste great! No kidding… try some zesty fresh daylily buds. They have a fresh cucumber flavor with a delightful kick. Include them raw in a salad or toss into a stir fry. It’s an unusual edible that tastes great, is less filling and really adds some pop to your landscape.

Hill’s Heating and Air Conditioning Inc.: Winner of Angie’s List ‘Super Service Award’ Better customer service sets Hill’s apart

Hill’s Heating and Air Conditioning was recently voted a “Super Service Award winner on Angie’s List. For the Central New York region, Hill’s received an A excellent rating, the highest rating you can get. “This is an unsolicited rating that comes from customer comments, said owner Terry Hill. “It measures the total effort of the company from the person who answers the phone to the person who explains and sells the product, to the product itself, including warranties — the whole customer experience. Our vendors have to perform to get our products delivered on time to make deadlines. We must perform — across the board. It is a true team effort. When asked how his company was different from other companies in the field, Hill said, “customer service. “We have over 15,000 customers in our database and we take care of them all, Hill said. “Our database software enables us to look at their history, from day one to the present. It’s a big advantage — we’ve been able to help with extended warranty issues because we have the data. Hill’s was featured in an online article, “How to Run a DataDriven Business, by Gene Marks, that appeared on Forbes.com in 2010. In the article Marks writes, “Terry Hill, owner of Hill’s Heating and Air Conditioning in Baldwinsville, thrives on data

Hill’s is also different from most competitors in other ways. “We’re bigger than most and better equipped,â€? Hill said. “We’ve served Central New York for over 39 years and our customers know us. We have customers who know their service tech. Some even baked cookies for their tech at Christmas time. We are customer-oriented and we have customers in a service region that stretches from Cortland to Pulaski and Utica to Geneva.â€? Hill’s Heating and Air Conditioning is fully insured and all work is guaranteed. They feature six fully stocked service trucks throughout Central New York. In fact, if you have purchased your system from Hill’s and require an emergency service call, chances are 99 percent that they have the repair part on the service truck. Hill’s features service contracts with maintenance and full-service contracts on all brands of heating and air conditioning equipment. And parts‌ Hill’s has made a strong commitment to inventory and parts, with more than 11,000 square feet of warehouse stocked with equipment, parts and accessories. Thousands of parts in excess of $600,000 in value, all on hand to better serve their customers. Owners Terry and Elli Hill’s commitment to customer service is shared by Shirley Hammond, who manages the 25 employees at Hill’s, some whom have worked there for more than 30 years. Colonial Laundromats Seneca Federal upgrades Serving CNY with 34 locations and updates into the future For the past six months, Seneca Federal Savings and Loan Association has been implementing various forms of Information Technology upgrades and replacements to older systems. Our most significant technology platform change involved an extensive upgrade to our core processing platform and a soon-to-be-unveiled updated website. As we become more comfortable with these upgrades it will enable us to provide you with greater connectivity for your banking needs through our 24/7 available website and position the Association to better serve you well into the future. Please consider the convenience of using our enhanced website for routine transactions, reconciliations, banking and web-safety information. As with any major IT implementation/upgrade, despite our best efforts it has not always been as easy as we would like for some of our members. We would like to thank all the members who experienced some unfamiliar long lines as our front-line became comfortable with the new screens and processes as a result of the core processing upgrade. Our staff has been working hard to assist members through this transition, helping members in the lobbies and on the phone. While assisting members, the supervisors and officers also have been actively listening. The supervisors have brought your feedback to executive management — they are great advocates and always looking out for you, our members. We have heard you — and we — are making additional enhancements to our online system to simplify our website and enhance your user experience through the addition of various financial calculators and information to protect your personal and banking information. Our website has been updated to become more user-friendly and intuitive while maintaining a straightforward navigation capability. While the world continues to move online, we also know many of you appreciate being able to talk to a “real person at our community-based branches. Seneca Federal’s staff is second to none in answering your banking questions, and we strive to give you that small-town banking experience. We continue to experience a trend toward a higher number of calls and the request for telephone transfers. While a high call volume is a good thing from many perspectives, we are concerned that this could eventually result in a rise in wait times. We are taking steps to See seneca federal, page 5

When Central New York residents think of laundromats, only one name comes to mind. Established by father-son team Jerry and Tim O’Connell in 1983, Colonial Laundromats grew auspiciously from a laundry equipment distribution business into, 29 years later, Central New York’s No. 1 laundromat. Tim O’Connell says the main difference between his laundromats and the competition is cleanliness. “Laundromats don’t necessarily have the best image, said O’Connell. “We put cleanliness and safety above all else in our laundromats. All Colonial Laundromats are well-lit, safe and open 24 hours a day to meet the needs of their customers. An attendant is almost always on duty, primarily to keep the store clean, but also to answer questions and be helpful. “Our employees won’t do your laundry, but they’re very friendly and willing to assist with any questions you might have, O’Connell said. Colonial Laundromats are becoming popular with people who want to save money on their water, gas

And look at the savings on their water, gas and electric bills. A top loader at home, with 20-pound capacity, will use 28 gallons of water; Colonials uses 24 gallons for the whole cycle, and that’s good for the environment. More and more people are thinking like that. Come here, and for $10 you can do a lot of laundry. We have more and more men coming in and helping with the family laundry. They like to

get it done fast – and they can do that with these large capacity washers. Colonial Laundromats are located within a 90-mile radius in the Syracuse area, with 34 different locations. Its newest addition is at 416 Velasko Road in Western Lights, open 24 hours a day. About 55 different selfserve washers are available at each location. Sizes range from standard front-loader machines to 35, 55 and monster 80-pound washing machines to meet any laundry challenge you may have. While keeping a classic style for most of her designs for clients, she said she is sure to target their needs in their home. “I try and get into the heads of my clients. I try to figure out what they need, Joy said. “I find out what they’re looking for. For example, many clients have issues with their dining rooms. Joy said older dining rooms tend to be narrow and cannot fit china cabinets. She will measure the old one and help the client determine how much more space is needed.

Another popular concept she uses for homes is the pocket door to save room and the walk-in pantry for kitchens. They’re both functional, save space and offer convenience. She has even brought this concept into the bedroom by utilizing an alcove in a client’s home so that a small countertop and electrical outlet allowed for a coffee maker and toaster oven. It ended up being extremely functional, and welcomed the client to make her coffee and a small breakfast in her bedroom in the morning while she got ready for the day. From the beginning of the design process to the final walk-through of a job, Joy said she is not only involved every step of the way, but that her clients are too.

Roto-Rooter Syracuse celebrating 125th year of family business with cover story in a national publication By Jennifer Wing Christine Bauer Armstrong and her husband Mark Armstrong are part of a proud lineage as the fourth generation running their family business, Bauer Plumbing – Roto-Rooter which is now 125 years old. That doesn’t mean they are relying upon their sterling reputation alone, as they are always looking for ways to make their excellent customer service even better. With that in mind, they recently hired a new service technician and purchased two new high-velocity pressure jets. “We want to have the best equipment and the ability to do get the job done for the customer in the quickest, most efficient way, Mark said. “When they need a job done, we don’t have to keep our customers waiting. The machinery or tool that is needed for the job is already available. In fact, we buy a variety of heads and nozzles that our competition most likely doesn’t have, so we can do the job in a quick, efficient and convenient manner. Cover story And now, their family business is being recognized nationally for its long history of excellence. The company is the cover story for the August edition of Cleaner, a monthly national magazine for drain and pipe line cleaning inspection and rehabilitation professionals. “It was a great experience, Mark said. “They sent a photographer to Syracuse who took pictures of us here and followed us around on calls to various customers. He said he’s excited to be the cover story of the national trade magazine. “We’re very proud to be featured, he said. “Between our family having the pride of carrying on tradition, with my wife and I as the fourth generation and our children being the fifth generation in the business, there’s that great feeling that folks of our community have used the services of this company for so long. For the magazine to pick us because of that as well as because we are the oldest Roto-Rooter franchise in the nation is a great honor. “ For more information and to read the article when it is released, visit cleaner.com.

A legacy of customer service In 1888, the company was founded by Christine’s greatgrandfather. In the beginning, Christine’s great-grandfather offered plumbing services, steam fitting, pumps, sinks, tinning and tin roofing, in a building that was just a few blocks north of their shop today. The family built this building in 1913, 100 years ago, to house a grocery store. In 1927, Bauer Plumbing moved from S. State Street to its current location at 1911 S. Salina Street, as a plumbing shop, tinsmith and hardware store, operated by Christine’s grandfather. In 1937, Christine’s father, Donald J. Bauer, the company’s licensed master plumber, traveled as boy to Rochester with his father to see this new machine entering the plumbing industry called the Roto-Rooter, with an available franchise serving Onondaga County. Over most recent years, the company made the decision to brand the Roto-Rooter company name. The name is a familiar one to many people across the country who may be relocating to the area. In today’s world with similar name confusion it’s important for them to have their customers identify the right company. “We pride ourselves on our company’s history, professionalism and unmatched customer service to all of our customers serving Onondaga County, Mark said. “We are the oldest RotoRooter franchise in the nation and have owned the franchise for over 76 years. As anyone who has had a plumbing emergency knows, time is of the essence when a repair is needed. The company specializes in commercial and residential Roto-Rooter 24/7 emergency service plumbing-sewer and drain cleaning service. Their history of excellent customer service and professionalism has allowed them to continue the legacy started long ago by Christine’s great-grandfather. “We have had many great employees over the years taking care of all the needs of our community, Mark said. “We would like to say ‘Thank you’ to all our customers for allowing us to be the company of choice. Offering a wide range of services

Your Plumbing Experts.

Christine Bauer Armstrong and her husband Mark Armstrong are part of a proud lineage as the fourth generation running their family business, Bauer Plumbing – RotoRooter which is now 125 years old. More people depend on Roto-Rooter than any other company for residential plumbing and drain cleaning services, and homeowners can trust Roto-Rooter for all of their installation, repair and replacement needs including: sewers and drains, faucets, sinks, toilets, showers and tubs, waterlines, pipework, disposers, dishwashers, water heaters and septic tanks. In addition, Roto-Rooter is the company to call for any commercial plumbing work, drain cleaning, high-pressure water jetting, underground leak and line detection, video camera pipe inspections, grease trap and liquid waste pumping, backflow protection, automated drain care programs and pipe repair and replacement. The tradition continues Mark and Christine started with Bauer Plumbing – RotoRooter, more than 25 years ago when the company was celebrating its Centennial, 100 years in business. Now, with their son Brandon Armstrong, who works part time at the business while attending Syracuse University College of Law, and daughters, Ashleigh Armstrong, who has worked in the office over the last couple of years, and their youngest Aryanna Armstrong, helps out part-time when off from school, they serve as a fifth generation strong working the family business. “And away go troubles down the drain.

shaky economy.â€? Route 5 and Kingston In fact, McLaughlin reRoad, Elbridge ceived a note from state martysbarncellar. Senator John A. DeFrancom. cisco congratulating him on 689-9927 the business. “He said he was glad to hear about us purchasing Marty’s Barn Cellar and helping the local economy,â€? McLaughlin said. As a longtime member of the community, McLaughlin knows what Central New York families are faced with, and knows what they want when it comes to home furnishings. “We now offer a large inventory of finished furniture,â€? he said. “And we still have unfinished furniture available as well.â€? It’s obvious that the word has gotten out about the many changes that have occurred since McLaughlin and his wife, Colleen, took over the business a few years ago. “There have been so many changes,â€? he said. “We are not just an unfinished furniture store, and we want people to come and see what’s different here – even the dĂŠcor of the store is completely different.â€? Looking back McLaughlin took a roundabout route to get where he is today. When he took a buyout from New Process Gear, he didn’t really have a plan for where he would go to work, or what he would do next. Little did he know that he would revisit his past, and that past would lead him to his future. Before working at New Process Gear, McLaughlin worked for Dennis Hemming at Marty’s Barn Cellar for about two decades. The business, started by the Hemmings, was well-known by McLaughlin, and the Hemmings became like family. In fact, his wife said Mike coming back to Marty’s Barn Center is “like he’s returning to his roots, and he loves it.â€? In 1982, McLaughlin was a teenager looking for work. It was winter break when he was hired by Hemming to move some furniture at the store. Then, a month later, Hemming found he was in need of another employee, and hired McLaughlin, then almost 17 years old. McLaughlin would continue to work at Marty’s Barn Cellar until 2001, when he left to take a job at New Process Gear. It was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up, he said, but it was still difficult to leave the job he had held for so many years. Fast forward about eight years to a phone call he received from Hemming after he took the buyout. It turned out that two of Hemming’s employees needed some personal time off, so he needed someone to mind the store for a little while. From there, the two men started talking and struck a deal, as Hemming was ready to retire. And so, the tradition continues at Marty’s Barn Cellar, with the McLaughlins at the helm. With a fresh perspective on the business, the couple made cosmetic improvements to bring the building up-to-date and make the shopping experience even more appealing to customers. The store is located at Route 5 and Kingston Road in Elbridge. For more information call 689-9927 or visit martysbarncellar.com.
