Car Club Association of CNY gives back, keeps members informed on auto issues

By Jennifer Wing

The Car Club Association of Central New York was founded in the fall of 1988 by a group of dedicated car enthusiasts to provide communication among local clubs. “The association is basically a group formed in order to get the hobbyist car clubs together,” association President Dennis Connor said. “It’s a way for the clubs to cooperate, for representatives from the clubs to meet and talk about news and ideas in the hobby. “ Longley, an Onondaga Hill resident, said he was always “a car person.” “In the mid to late 80s I got into older cars and muscle cars, so this was a natural evolution,” he said. “I bought a ‘66 thunderbird in 1987 and got involved cruising with it and met other hobbyists at shows.” With a current membership of 56 clubs, the association now extends from Plattsburgh to Binghamton and from Cooperstown to Jamestown. One of the functions of the association is to aid in organization of the many area car show dates. The culmination of that calendar of shows is the Syracuse Nationals, where members volunteered since the show’s inception 12 years ago. “Car Club Association members come in and do a lot of the legwork at the show for free,” Connor said. “And the fact that we volunteer at the show allows the Syracuse Nationals to save money, which is donated, with over half a million dollars going to charity in the last 11 years.”

The Syracuse Nationals said on their website that the Car Club Association “[has] been strong supporters of the show for the past 11 years and a very important part of the show’s success.”

Working together

According to the association’s website, “Club members often help smaller clubs in their efforts to put on shows. The association also provides the clubs the opportunity to have their show advertised on posters and tear-offs all over the Central New York area.” The association keeps its member clubs in contact “through newsletters, email, attending car shows and ‘Cruise Nights,’” according to cnycca.org.

Driver’s Village – your one-stop shop for all things auto By Jennifer Wing Driver’s Village in Cicero is constantly looking for ways to make both buying a car and getting it serviced a pleasant experience for its customers. Located at 5885 East Circle Drive, Driver’s Village saw growth last year with Fiat USA Studio, now open with dozens of Fiat 500 vehicles including Sport, Pop, Lounge and Cabriolet. These imported European-built vehicles are unmistakeable in design, fit, finish, fuel-efficiency and destined to be a new, Italian classic, today. The dealership also started selling GMC brand last February, and in March Driver’s Village will welcome Chevrolet to its family as it takes over what was formerly Bresee Chevrolet. In addition, Bresee has a commercial truck division, for which Driver’s Village has built a new home on the east side of the building. “That division will sell all of our brands to commercial customers throughout the CNY region,” said Lou Bregou, director of operations at Driver’s Village.

Moving and expanding

The decision to build out the Fiat USA Studio next to Driver’s Village Express & Expressions was the catalyst to move and expand the Finance First offices between Nissan and Mitsubishi on the north side of the facility. Finance First is a one-stop automotive lending center with multiple financing resources to help people secure a loan for their next vehicle, and build their credit score profile, even if they’ve had some troubles in the past. The Expression and Installation Store offers automotive accessories such as remote starters, GPS and heated seats. It also has its own graphic shop with custom designed auto wrap signage, including a state-of-the-art Driver’s Village Collision Center / Body Shop, New York State’s largest and most modern collision facility. Driver’s Village also has made the most of its location, remodeling the old Ames building and moving its expanded used car Warehouse into that space, along with a new reconditioning center. “The reconditioning center was just an internal business,” Bregou said. “It will be open to retail business this spring.”

Driver’s Village has two all-electric vehicles available from Nissan (pictured) and Mitsubishi.

Driver’s Village is concerned about doing its part for the environment and knows many of its customers feel the same. Accordingly, they are moving with the times. “We have installed multiple electric car charging stations and we have two all-electric vehicles available from Nissan and Mitsubishi,” Bregou said.

Syracuse: ‘Fight like a girl’ in 2012 Baldwin, Bregou families unveil CMB Fund vehicle By Farah F. Jadran With a small gathering of family and friends, the Baldwin and Bregou families unveiled a Jeep Laredo donned with the “Fight Like a Girl” logo to spread awareness for the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY, Inc. The pink’d out vehicle was given to Beth Baldwin recently as a token of appreciation for what the organization does for the community. Both the Bregou family and Driver’s Village worked together to make this “moving billboard” a reality. DV Senior

been touched by cancer, not once, but more times than they could keep track of on some days. However, the effort is not about them, according to Lou Bregou, director of operations at Driver’s Village. “It’s not about us or our suffering with cancer,” Lou said. “Instead, it’s about the inside of cancer and about the organization.” Lou, a prostate cancer survivor, said he is grateful for the closeness within the family especially when his mother and three of his four sisters have been diagnosed with cancer. His grandmother passed away from stomach and pancreatic cancer. Instead of asking, “why us?” when it comes to cancer in the Bregou family, Lou says, “why not us?” As the family celebrates the memory of Katherine Bregou Grainger, a part of the Christian Embassy Ministry in England, also they celebrate Virginia Bregou Jablanski who underwent another breast cancer surgery Dec. 20. Grainger was only 50 years old when she lost her battle a few weeks ago. “I miss her,” Jablanski said, “but there’s no regrets. She was a wonderful sister.” Both Jablanski, 59, director of human resources at Driver’s Village, and her brother Lou, 61, say that Katherine’s life was “full and very meaningful.” “She [Katherine Grainger] loved the world,” Lou said. Although her life was short, Lou said she got to

Mall Talk By Terry Formica Driver’s Village

The indoor mall of Driver’s Village, specifically “Center Court,” continues to be abuzz with local community event activity. This past Jan. 15 we hosted what was billed as the largest Bridal Show in Syracuse. It was a complete success for everyone involved. The Girl Scouts and their families returned once again for their Powder Puff – Grand Prix Race on Jan. 28 and Feb. 4. It was so much fun and excitement for both young and the young at heart. On Saturday, Feb. 11 the traditional YMCA Folks March will take place for the first time at Driver’s Village as an “Indoor Walk.” The idea came about, as many individuals prefer to walk in a safe and warm environment, and lends itself to mall walking. In fact, we continue to see many new faces on a daily basis taking advantage of the delightful atmosphere inside the mall at Driver’s Village to safely walk no matter what the weather holds. Check out the Folksmarch Website at: downtownsyracuseymca.org (click on Programs, then the Folksmarch logo). Our resident CNY Model Train Club will host its second 2012 Family Train Day on Feb. 25 with club members present to answer questions and to run special trains and train exhibits. The Second Annual MDA Muscle Walk will take place around the clock on Saturday, March 3. This includes a victory lap through the mall. Many of the MDA sponsors will be present to provide information on their services. Visit mda.org/musclewalk for information. On Friday, March 9, Driver’s Village and SEFCU will co-host the next American Red Cross Blood Drive. Anyone interested in donating may call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule an appointment or visit donatebloodnow.org. The Boy Scouts Pine Wood Derby returns on Sunday, March 11, with scouts and their families attending an afternoon of racing competition and awards. Beginning in April many local high schools will return to use the Carnegie Conference Center facility on the second level of the mall, and Center Court for high school proms and balls. The 2nd Annual Hardeko Helping Paws “Paws with a Cause” Animal Rescue will return on Sunday, May 20 with Shorty Rossi and Hercules from Animal Planet to raise funds and awareness of the needs for all rescue animals. For more information visit: dogdazepetshop.com.

Welcome new tenants inside the mall

The Brick House Café inside Sensational Driver’s Village opens at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday and offers fresh breakfast and lunch and bakery items as well as their signature Finger Lakes coffee. Inside the Café you will find beautiful art and craft items for sale by local artists. A most recent addition is various gift baskets made to order. For more information you may call 452-1556 ext. 2996 or check oneidalakeartisans.com for unannounced special coupons. Relocated from the Ponderosa Plaza in North Syracuse, Linda Facciponte, Dance Arts Studio, has recently made Driver’s Village their new home. The Dance Arts Studio is new to Driver’s Village but not to the dance world, with more than 25 years in business. Linda maintains a quality dance school with a nurturing environment fostering personal growth. The Director Linda Facciponte is highly esteemed in the community and holds various degrees and credentials in dance. Keeping informed

The association also lobbies on behalf of its members in both Albany and Washington. “We address issues that are important to us, Connor said. “One of the more recent ones is that we are against ethanol being put into gasoline – not only does it decrease mileage but it gives off more sulphur dioxide. Another example of a cause the association has gotten behind is to oppose a bill outlawing bumper guards on trucks. “We keep up with current legislation and make sure to keep our members informed, Connor said. “We try to represent, educate and petition our point of view.

Diverse membership

Connor said the area has many clubs for car enthusiasts of all types. “Central New York is very diverse – you

have hobbyists who like Pontiac, Ford, Chevy, Chrysler products, MG, a fire equipment club and truck clubs – all in the association. They each have their own niche, and a common goal: To further their hobby. “Many of the clubs have car shows and events they put on, and we help promote them. They are fun, family-oriented events, Connor said. “For all of us, this is a hobby. We are not professionals and are not in it for personal gain – we just love cars. And although he no longer owns the ’66 Thunderbird, he is still an enthusiast. “My wife has a 2001 Mustang GT and I have a 2006 Mustang Roush, he said. “Anyone who loves cars can join a club – if they visit our website, cnycca.org, and click on club contacts, they’ll see the clubs affiliated with us. For more information on car shows for 2012, check the website at the end of March.

travel the world and do the things she loved. Her husband, John Grainger, and their 10-year-old son Jonathan survive Katherine. Lou says the family will come to Central New York in February to celebrate Katherine’s life. Unveiling the pink-wrapped vehicle today caused the family to come together again, which has been a “positive out of all the brushes with cancer in the Bregou family. Beth Baldwin sat with Jablanski for 12 hours after her most recent surgery, and the sense of family was clear. Baldwin says she is very touched by the Bregou family’s gesture for the CMB Fund, and what it means to the 2012 campaign. Baldwin’s brother, Stephen, traveled to Central New York for the Dec. 27 unveiling to show his gratitude as well. Stephen said he feels humbled by the generosity of Syracuse. “The Central New York community has done very well over the past years raising millions for the fund, Steven said. “I want to be here as a motivator, to pump up Syracuse. Let’s kick some butt in 2012 and ‘fight like a girl’ to beat breast cancer! His mother, Carol M. Baldwin, has said for many years that she would witness a cure for breast cancer in her lifetime. “Now I really believe it, Stephen said. Farah F. Par-K Chrysler-Jeep humming right along Features new body shop, Saturday service hours By Brian Smith Chrysler Group LLC posted its second straight year of improved model sales in 2011, and Par-K Chrysler-Jeep in Fulton is excited to show consumers what the buzz is all about. “We have something for everyone, from the Chrysler 200s and 300s, to the Jeep Compass, Patriot and Grand Cherokee, said Par-K General Manager Thomas Gilbo. “[Fiat-Chrysler CEO] Sergio Marchionne pledged to change everything when he took over two years ago, and those changes, from the body types to the

engines, have all taken place. “The product is very much improved. There was great detail and care taken in redesigning all of the cars, and it shows. A lot of our models have the V6 Penestar engine, and some V8s, which means improved performance and gas mileage. The Grand Cherokee and Chrysler Town & Country are getting close to 30 miles per gallon on the highway; that’s very impressive. Par-K, much like the cars it sells, underwent improvements in 2011. After an ice storm

collapsed the roof on its body shop during Super Bowl Sunday last year, Gilbo said the garage was rebuilt from the floor up, reopening in July. “It’s beautiful; everything is brand new and top of the line in the shop, he added. “We’ve been back to normal with our hours since the summer. “Bill Marshall and Butch Jackowski do an incredible job managing the shop. They do custom work and have multiple cars featured in magazines, and, of course, are there for all the dents and dings and insurance work you may need. Par-K also added Saturday maintenance hours in September. Cars are serviced from 8 a.m. to noon, in addition to the normal 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. hours Monday through Wednesday and Friday. On Thursday, the service department is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. “The Saturday hours are great for people who can’t get off work during the weekdays, or have something they need to take care of in a pinch, Gilbo said. “We do a lot of main-

tenance and brake jobs on Saturdays so you can have your car back on the road for work on Monday. Gilbo urged those in the market for a new Chrysler or Jeep to visit Par-K in February. The dealership is having its annual Presidents’ Day Event, during which certain models have additional $500 rebates for the entire month, according to Gilbo. He also wasn’t shy in divulging a little industry secret as to why February is a great month to buy a car. “In the spring, manufacturers know people are out and about looking for cars, so the MSRPs go up, Gilbo said. “Why not take advantage of the mild winter and come on out and see us this month? To view and test drive any of the Chrysler and Jeep models, visit Par-K, Oswego County’s only Five Star Chrysler dealer, located on Route 481 in Fulton. Par-K is 10 minutes north of the Great Northern Mall. Par-K’s entire inventory is also online at par-k.com. Call 598-8118 for more information.

Deer can be found all over the country, and healthy deer populations are increasingly creeping into residential and urban areas seeking food and mates thanks to developments encroaching on deer habitats. This increases the chances of motorists having run-ins with deer on the roadways around their homes and places of business. State Farm estimates that 2.3 million collisions between deer and vehicles occurred in the United States during the two-year period between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2010. That number marks a 21.1 percent increase in the number of incidents from statistics gathered just five years earlier. West Virgina and Iowa rank first and second, respectively, as the states where a driver is most likely to collide with a deer. Vehicular crashes can cause serious damage to a car and even be fatal. According to National Geographic, the average white-tailed deer can stand at 6-feet-tall and weigh between 100 and 200 pounds. That animal stands as a formidable foe should a collision with a car occur. It may seem like one is hitting into a barrier or an impenetrable object. Although fall, when deer are migratory

There are certain tips that can reduce the chances of a deer and vehicle collision. 3 Keep in mind that deer are most active between 6 and 9 p.m. At dusk, they may be harder to see. 3 Take note of posted deer crossing signs. These are erected in places where deer are most actively crossing. 3 Deer generally travel in herds. so drivers who see one deer should expect to see others nearby. 3 Use highbeams when driving at night to better illuminate rural areas.

3 Drive slowly in areas where deer are likely to be, such as by open fields. 3 Car-mounted deer whistles are not a reliable deterrent. 3 Do not swerve erratically to avoid a deer collision. This can result in a collision with another car and increase risk of injury and damage. 3 In areas where deer collisions are prevalent, extra insurance coverage may be needed on vehicles. Therefore, drivers should speak with their insurance providers.

Northside Collision is celebrating its 38 year in business in Central New York. Northside opened their original location on North State Street in Syracuse in 1974 and has experienced a methodical growth plan over the past 38 years. Northside is owned by President Scott Jones and CEO Gary Bell; they currently have five Central New York locations and over 125 employees. The most recent store opening is in Liverpool on the corner of John Glenn Boulevard and Route 57; they are celebrating their one year anniversary and a very successful one at this new location. Other locations are in Cicero, Dewitt, Camillus and Baldwinsville. Northside has direct repair relationships with several insurance companies; these relationships allow a streamlined approach to the repair process and customers are pleased with the process since the insurance company and Northside Collision are working together to provide a guaranteed repair and a favorable experience rather than an adversarial one, th

says Bell. Northside locations are I-Car Gold Class Certified, which means the company’s technicians have undergone extensive training and certifications in all phases of collision repair. Each facility uses the latest technology available for diagnostics and collision repair; we converted to water based, green, environmentally friendly paints from BASF in 2011, Bell said. Jones, who has been with the company for 25 years, said Northside has become the premier collision repair facility in upstate New York. “If you take care of customers they keep coming back,” he said. We are now repairing vehicles for three generations in some families. Many customers that had their vehicles repaired in the 1970s when the company was started are still returning, as well as their children and grandchildren, for vehicle repairs. Northside Collision offers loaner vehicles, and rentals on site. You can find a Northside Collision location near you at northsidecollision.com.

Energy efficient equals smart savings B’ville biz reduces footprint, educates community By Miranda L. Pennock

sources,” he said. “I can’t believe a business would not take advantage of this.” Even though the panels are practically out of sight from the ground, Hudson & Mowins’ use of green technology isn’t hidden from the community by any means. A 24-inch LCD monitor is set up in the waiting area where customers can see the amount of energy generated from the sun. As of Jan. 19, the solar panels had created enough energy for a car to drive 4,723 miles and prevented 12,161 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Baldwinsville resident Ermine Cunningham, an environmentalist and retired teacher, who has been a customer at the business for approximately 20 years, said she hoped other businesses would take notice of Greg and Cathy’s efforts. “[They are] a real inspiration to other businesses in the area and hopefully it will grow,” she said. Cunningham said she believes people ought to think about future generations when consuming energy from finite sources like coal, which is burned in order to produce electricity. With higher standards for energy efficiency in place, Cunningham said she’s pleased to see Hudson & Mowins taking advantage of solar power and being conscious of the amount of energy the auto shop and parts store uses. “I think it’s wonderful and I am in admiration of them. They decided to take responsibility,” she said. “I was hoping this business could be a model for other businesses.” Occasionally there are hold ups where renewable energy is concerned — red tape at the local level and public hearings — but Cunningham, who has supported the Hudsons’ endeavor from the beginning, said municipalities should have policies in place regarding alternative energy sources. Essentially, local government needs to step up to the plate by backing those trying to be more conscious of their energy consumption. “We should be encouraging these things,” she said. The Hudson family has taken their efforts one step further with the use of a special furnace that burns waste oil drained from automobiles. Greg said they don’t do anything to the oil other than filter it to remove things like strands of paper from the vehicle oil filters. The entire business — 15,000-square-feet of building space — is heated using waste oil. “We’d like to think we took an industry that 30 to 40 years ago might have left the dirtiest footprint on the earth in a whole bunch of ways and turned it into one of the cleaner ones. I think a lot of people can relate and appreciate that,” Hudson said. “If it gains us customers, that’s great, too, but that certainly wasn’t the primary reason.” Hudson & Mowins, located at 62 E. Genesee St. in Baldwinsville, is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Miranda Pennock is a freelancer for the Baldwinsville Messenger. She resides in Baldwinsville with her husband and two daughters.

While some snow enthusiasts have been left wondering where winter is, Baldwinsville business owners and avid snowmobilers Greg and Cathy Hudson are taking advantage of the sun. In the last two years, the Hudson family has doubled the size of their business — Hudson & Mowins on East Genesee Street — with the purchase of NAPA AutoCare Center on the adjacent property and invested in solar panels in an effort to use energy more efficiently. “One of the biggest reasons [for installing the panels] was we took a couple steps back and looked at how much electricity we were using,” Greg said, adding that if there was a way to cut back, they should. Just by switching out lighting fixtures, some of which had been in the building since the business opened in 1958, Hudson & Mowins electric bill was reduced by approximately 20 percent each month. After seeing the savings from installing energy efficient fixtures, the couple opted to research additional means of going green and focused on solar energy. Now, with the seven panels in use, Greg said the business’ National Grid bill for October and November 2011 was 75 percent less than the same months in 2010. Along with a reduction on the monthly bill, the Hudsons receive government incentives for going green. Greg said monetary reimbursements have come partially in direct funding as well as tax credits. Despite budget cuts, government programs encouraging renewable energy remain steadfast and intact. “I’ve talked to a few people in the know from the government [and] they have assured me that as important as it is to save money, it is no more important to find alternate energy

Longley Dodge still going strong By Sarah Hall

Longley Dodge has seen a number of changes over the years, but that hasn’t stopped the dealership, located on Route 57 in Fulton, from continuing to grow and thrive. Longley Dodge started out a body shop in 1947, then started selling GMC trucks in 1956; the dealership sold the brand until the early 1960s. They took on Studebakers in 1959 and sold the iconic models until the brand folded in 1966. In 1963, the shop started selling Dodge vehicles, and they’ve been doing business that way ever since. So what accounts for their longevity? “We’re a family organization,â€? said owner Dennis Longley, who runs the business with his cousin Gene and son Doug. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially since we’re in a small community. People like to come here and know they’re going to get good service.â€? *Additional $1,000 off for returning lease customers. Geico growing in Syracuse

GPS usage tips

By Tami S. Scott Did you know that Geico has a presence in Syracuse? The local sales office opened its doors four years ago on Erie Boulevard East with just two licensed agents. Five full-time agents now occupy the bustling office that sees a steady stream of customers – easily 100 – each day. Incoming phone calls reach upwards to 300 daily. “A sixth agent is coming on board in about a week,” said Tammy Braunscheidel, a twoyear-plus employee with the rapidly growing insurance company. Braunscheidel said she has seen a huge increase in business since she joined the Geico team. “Our agency has almost doubled (in enrollment) in the last year.” Geico, owned by Berkshire Hathaway, is known for its low rates, 24-hour customer service and of course, its little green reptilian mascot Gecko that surfaced the airwaves in 1999. “Fifteen minutes could save you 15 percent or more in car insurance,” has become a long-familiar tagline in both radio and television advertisements.

Today’s drivers rely heavily on GPS technology, or global positioning system devices. GPS has revolutionized the way people drive and use maps and directions. While there are no hard stat i s t i c s on t h e number of people who own GPS devices, thousands of people have either a GPSdevice that comes pre-equipped in a car that they purchased or a standalone device that was bought after the fact. These devices come pre-loaded with maps that work with satellites in space. The GPS receiver figures out the distance to each and uses this information to deduce the location of the device in a process called trilateration. GPS devices have made paper maps obsolete for many people. While GPS devices can be very convenient, especially on road trips, there are some tips to keep in mind. 3 Place the GPSdevice where it won’t obstruct your vision or take your eyes off of the road for a good deal of time. 3 Don’t treat the GPS as if it is infallible. Even with map updates and other accessories, a GPS can still make mistakes. Use common sense, especially where it would seem the GPS is guiding you in the wrong way. 3 Do not play with the controls while operating the car. If you need to adjust something on the GPS, do so only after pulling over to a safe area. 3 Have a general idea where you are going so you’ll know if the GPS is potentially guiding you in the wrong direction and can maneuver in advance.

What about clean air inside your car? Tips to help drivers maintain a healthy vehicle interior Over the last several years, homeowners have increasingly emphasized clean air in their homes. The growing popularity of home air purifiers suggests today’s homeowners want to make certain the environment inside their home is as healthy as possible. While protecting the environment in a home is important, it’s equally as important for motorists to maintain a healthy environment in their vehicles. The average American spends roughly 10 to 15 hours per week inside a car, where dust, odors, smoke and other potentially sour smells can make riding in a car rather unpleasant. In addition, air pollution and allergens inside a vehicle can pose a significant health risk to drivers and their passengers. Fortunately, there are several steps drivers can take to maintain a healthy environment inside their vehicle.

Improve air quality.

Perhaps the best way drivers can ensure their passengers have a healthy environment while traveling in a car is to improve the air quality within the vehicle. The GoPure Automotive Clean Air System from Philips quickly and effectively

purifies the air inside a vehicle by eliminating harmful gases, dust, pollen, smoke, odors, and bacteria. Employing a 3-stage filtering process, the GoPure system, which can be easily placed beneath a seat, in the rear of the vehicle or on a seatback, captures big particles, such as human hair and pet hair, during the pre-filter stage before the HEPA filter removes these particles and others, including pollen and pet dander. In the final stage, GoPure’s advanced HESA filter removes harmful gases and even bad odors, such as those caused by smoke, ensuring the vehicle’s interior is not only healthy, but also pleasant for drivers and passengers alike.

can easily and effectively remove the harmful gases that stem from the new car smell, while continuously removing additional odors as the car ages.

Vacuum carpets, floor mats and between seats.

Carpets and seating are another collection point for dirt and pollutants and need to be vacuumed thoroughly. Make sure to get the floor mats, the floor under the floor mats and all the way under the seats. Pound your seats with something large like a baseball bat to loosen and knock out all the dirt and soil that has settled into the creases and stitching.

Clean the vehicle’s interior.

Many automobile owners pay particular attention to the appearance of their vehicle’s exterior. However, those same drivers don’t spend nearly as much time, if any, tending to the vehicle’s interior. But a neglected interior doesn’t just fall victim to spills and dirt or other particles brought in from the outside. Over time, a neglected interior might begin to grow mildew, which is both unhealthy and unpleasant. In general, clean the vehicle’s interior once a month to prevent mildew growth and the buildup of dirt and grime.

Protect newer vehicles on hot days.

Hot weather can take its toll on drivers, and it can also wreak havoc on their vehicle’s interior. Heat from the sun can cause the vehicle’s plastics, vinyl or leather parts to emit volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, can produce both short-term and long-term adverse health effects. Whenever possible, park in the shade or use a sun shade on the windshield. In addition, slightly opening the windows in spring and summer promotes air flow through the cabin, helping reduce the risk of VOC buildup inside the vehicle. More information about the GoPure Automotive Clean Air System from Philips is available at philipsgocure.com or 800-257-6054. .

Don’t fall in love with the “new car smell.

Few consumers can resist the famed “new car smell. Though enticing, the new car smell is actually an outgassing of toxic chemicals from newly formed plastics, and the chemicals in these gases have been linked to birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, premature births, and early puberty in laboratory animals. Though this doesn’t mean consumers should avoid buying new cars, it The GoPure Automotive Clean Air System fromPhilips purifies air within a vehicle, should inspire consumers to address the new creating a healthier environment for drivers and passengers alike. car smell immediately. Washing the car frequently enough and applying the best quality wax will help keep UV rays from penetrating through the paint. * Over sprays: Life does not stop to allow cars to drive through, particularly when it comes to construction zones. It’s possible for a car to be doused in paint spray, tar, concrete, and other chemicals that are routinely used in construction. Do not allow these substances to harden on the car. Rinse promptly with automotive soap. Try to avoid construction zones whenever possible. * Rain: Both acid rain and regular rainwater (and other sources of water) can dissolve paint over time. Co-owners Bruce and Jerry Rapp continue Bill Rapp Superstore’s tradition of customer service and a wide selection of vehicles. By Tami S. Scott When it’s time for you to purchase a vehicle, think Bill Rapp Superstore. The family-owned dealership sells new, stellar products from Buick, GMC, Subaru and Nissan, as well as numerous pre-owned vehicles of various makes and models. And when it comes to customer service, the dealership is equally impressive. “We’ve always been customer-focused, said vice president and co-owner Jerry Rapp, adding that the store does not rely on special promotions to attract customers. “We’ll give you our best price everyday. Salespeople, he said, take the time to consult with clients about their wants and needs, then offer the best advice and options available, which include leasing or straight-up buying. “It really depends on what the goal of the consumer is, Rapp said. “At the end of the day, [our customers] need to decide what’s best for them. The Superstore offers financing for all its clients,

Whenever the car becomes wet, it should be dried with a towel or chamois and not allowed to air dry. * Natural substances: Tree sap, bird droppings and splattered insects contain compounds that can erode the paint on a car. Avoid parking under large trees where sap and bird droppings may be prevalent. In terms of bug splatter, try to wash it off as soon as possible to alleviate damage. * Eggs: Oftentimes, rambunctious children think it is funny to egg a car. However, the enzymes and sulfur content in eggs can cause paint and clear coat to dissolve, leaving white spots in the wake of the egg. Most people purchase a car for its looks and performance. However, unless the auto is kept in a garage and never driven, it is impossible to keep it in pristine condition. In many cases, damage to the clear coat or enamel paint on the car is something vehicle owners expect. A car owner who decides he or she wants the car to remain in the best shape possible will have to take an active role in maintenence and damage prevention. One of the key things to remember is to never allow any substance to remain on the paint for too long; otherwise the risk for damage increases. Also, it may be very difficult to clean if the offender is allowed to sit on the paint. Here are some other factors to consider. * UV light: Just as UV light can affect skin, hair and other parts of the body, it also can

Confessions of a consumer: Retail therapy or shopaholism? I’m the first to admit that I love shopping. If there is a bargain to be had, I’m Jennifer there. If there is a product in high demand, I will hunt it down. And it doesn’t matter what type of store I’m in. At the grocery, clothing or home store, I have my list, and strategy, mapped out. In fact, I tend to follow a particular route through the stores with which I am most familiar. For instance, at Wegman’s, I start in the deli and cheese area, then hit the produce and meat departments, the bakery, and so on. This can be helpful for my husband if we are shopping together, as he will know where to find me should we decide to divide and conquer my list. There is a lot of great shopping to be had in Central New York – with a great mixture of Mom-and-Pop specialty

on the register receipts? Am I, in fact, a shopaholic? Or am I someone who can simply acknowledge that shopping helps me relax, destress and, well, be happier than I was when I first pulled into the parking lot? I think the answer might be somewhere in between. I can go weeks without a shopping spree, but must get my basics – groceries, for example, every week. And if I have a set strategy for my weekly outing, where’s the harm? Is it so wrong to be looking forward to my next trip to the outlet mall in Waterloo? I don’t think so. Am I addicted to hunting for bargains? Perhaps, but I can’t help but think that isn’t a bad thing. I can’t help but think it might be something in my genes; my mother enjoys shopping as much as I do. I can remember shopping with her, as I do with my children. I think they will probably pass that down to their children, as well. And thus, the economy will flourish, thanks to the Wing family. You can thank me later.

I have some favorites that I hit just about every week, and am always on the lookout for new stores to add to my list of “must-shops. If I’m feeling down, it perks me up to load the kids in the car and visit Towne Center in Fayetteville, with its nice variety of stores and eating establishments. I can feel my mood improving as I wander the aisles, picking out a treat or two for each of the kids as well as my husband and myself. I am always interested in what is current, whether it be a style of swimsuit or new DVD release. I am also always on the lookout for that red sign or sticker which indicates that everdesireable clearance item. In this day and age, it is difficult for me to buy anything that is not on clearance; if it’s not a bargain, it had better be special. So what does that make me? Am I addicted to the sound of squeaky shopping cart wheels, the sight of shelves neatly lined with goods of every shape and size, the smell of the ink
