By Farah F. Jadran It’s the morning rush-hour and you have to get the kids to school on time. You grab lunches, double check that backpacks are packed and you’re out the door. This might be the daily routine for Nicole Johnson, but every weekend between January and March are booked with something else — Monster Jam — and Syracuse is her final stop before World Finals in Las Vegas. Nicole was born in California and now resides in Las Vegas. She is a wife and mother of two boys. Her love and passion for cars, motorsports and driving itself make her family’s extracurricular activities anything but typical. She took the wheel of the Scooby Doo Monster Jam truck last season. Now entering her fourth season of being the driver of a 10,000pound monster truck, Nicole reflected on how she came upon the dirt-piled scene. Since 1992, Nicole has been driving off-road vehicles and in particular, she has excelled in rock crawling competitions which takes custom built buggies on extreme paths complete with an obstacle course. “You can be on a vertical angle and then drop off a steep cliff,” Nicole said. It was her vast experience that made her transition to the Monster Jam arena so smooth. But the open road and the rugged terrain have always had a special place in Nicole’s heart. “I have always been attracted to cars,” Nicole said. “My dad built me a go-cart and I never raced it, but I drove on streets until I stirred up the cops!” Her father, a diesel mechanic, taught Nicole See monster jam, page 3

Monster Jam, the world’s premier monster truck series, is returning to the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, on Saturday, March 8. Tickets are now on sale and affordably priced for the whole family, with seats starting at $10 for kids and $25 for adults. In 2013, Monster Jam at the Carrier Dome nearly sold out with more than 36,400 in attendance. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Entry to the pit party starts at 2 p.m. The 2014 event is expected to feature some of the biggest superstars in Monster Jam, including: Grave Digger and driver Dennis Anderson, four-time World Finals Champion; Max-DSM and driver Tom Meents, 11-time World Finals Champion; Avenger and driver Jim Koehler, two-time World Finals Champion; El Toro Loco and driver Marc McDonald, World Finals Champion; Scooby-Doo and driver Nicole Johnson; Son-uva Digger and driver Ryan Anderson; Cleatus and driver Frank Krmel; Aftershock and driver Bob Robbins, a Western New York native; and additional trucks are expected. Driver’s Village Mall Talk The indoor mall of Driver’s Village, specifically “Center Court� is a buzz with local community event activity. This past Jan. 19 the mall hosted the newest Bridal Show in Syracuse. It was an enjoyable afternoon, and a complete success for everyone involved. The Girl Scouts and their families returned to center court once again with their annual Powder Puff – Grand Prix Race on Feb. 7 and 8. The girls are responsible for creating and building their very own derby race car. The girls exhibited so much enthusiasm it was great fun for both young and the young at heart. The resident CNY Model Train Club has planned two Family Train Days this year. The first one is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1. There will be club members present to answer questions and to run special trains and train exhibits. The second event scheduled for April 12 is much like the first, except it will be a charity fundraiser to benefit The Food Bank of CNY. It’s great fun for all family members interested in trains and their history. On Friday, March 14, Driver’s Village will host the next American Red Cross Blood Drive. known any different. “I don’t know what it’s like to be a total ‘girly girl,’� she said. “I lie awake at night thinking about cars.� Her childhood love for cars grew into a career path and now she sometimes wonders why she is one of few women in the arena. “Everyone said it was not possible for me to have a career in motorsports, but it’s what I know,� Nicole said. “It’s hard for me to know why there wouldn’t be more women in it.� She’s roared into Monster Jam arenas in Houston, Atlanta and Tampa Bay this year alone. Her truck travels with Dennis Anderson’s Grave Digger Monster Jam truck which is an honor in itself, according to Nicole. She flies home between

Nicole’s competitive nature has also come into play when she enters a Monster Jam competition. “I can’t play a game of monopoly without getting competitive,â€? she admitted. Even before breaking into what was once a completely male-dominated motorsport, Nicole was already changing the “normsâ€? by completing a degree in construction management. She and her husband started a construction company together in 2000 and, in 2012, they opened a custom gun shop in Las Vegas. “Guys always think I have a lot to prove, but I put my head down and work hard,â€? Nicole said. Her father taught her to work twice as hard all the time. She grew up working for her father and so he set a higher standard. “He never wanted his employees to think we were handed anything.â€? Of course there is respect to earn in any field, but Nicole has always known that she belongs in Monster Jam. “I always dreamed about having a team of my own,â€? Nicole said. “I realize how rare it is to be in the position to drive a Monster Jam truck. I appreciate it even more.â€? Being a mother of two boys (ages 13 and 15), Nicole said she often catches them bragging to their friends about what their mom does. She recognizes that her kids have become accustomed to how different her job is. “They are proud of their mom‌and I always remind them that I am the coolest mom.â€? Longley Dodge in Fulton recently added a new commercial line of trucks to its already extensive inventory of quality vehicles. “We are now a Business Link Dealer,” said Dennis Longley, president of Longley Dodge. “We offer the full Ram truck line, from the Ram 1500, Motor Trend Magazine’s 2013 and 2014 Truck of The Year, to the 3500-5500 series trucks that are available with dump bodies, stake racks and rollback wrecker units.” “In addition to the full Ram truck line we have also added ProMaster Commercial Vans as part of our full line of quality work trucks.” Longley said the move allows the dealership to further its ties with Chrysler and Dodge, “handling the full line of what they provide.” “Our goal is to support businesses and contractors by extending to them an excellent customer service experience,”

he said. “To improve our level of customer service we have added a new 30,000-pound hoist to handle the heavy duty trucks.” Good service after the sale has been the cornerstone for success at Longley Dodge. Being open 67 years has established a reputation of customer satisfaction and quality service for Longley Dodge. But, even so, the dealership is always looking for ways to improve the level of customer after the sale to make it even better. With the recent addition of Tom Alnutt as service manager they hope to increase their level of customer satisfaction and service. Tom brings 45 years of experience to the dealership. “We have also added a new Customer Resource Management program to our service and sales department,” Longley said. “This program allows us to track customer vehicles, including sales, service, warranty and repair history. The history of each vehicle is there as soon as a customer comes in the door.”

“Our customers are our number one priority, and the service at Longley Dodge in Fulton is what keeps customers coming back,” he said. “We have a large customer base that has been doing business with our dealership for 30 years. We had one family that bought over 30 vehicles from us, starting with a 1960 Studebaker.” Besides the generations of car buyers are the three generations of staff at Longley Dodge. Earl and Harold Longley began the business in 1947 strictly as an auto body shop. The family dealership was established in 1955 and the brothers added the Dodge line in 1964, making Longley the longest standing Dodge dealership in Oswego County. Earl’s son Dennis and Harold’s son Gene run the business now. Dennis’s son, Doug Longley, is in the process of learning the business and will eventually take over as owner when Dennis and Gene retire. “We’re a family organization,” said Longley. “I think that has a lot to do with it, especially sine we’re in a small community.

People like to come here and know they’re going to get good service.” And that service isn’t overbearing, Longley said. “Our sales staff doesn’t pressure you,” he said. “They’re not pushy. We don’t like to operate that way, because it doesn’t really serve the customer as well.” That’s why people keep coming back. “A lot of our business is repeat business,” Longley said. “People come back to us.” And if there is a problem, people know they can go to the top to find a solution.

Bill Rapp Superstore celebrates 60 years of serving customers in CNY

Bill Rapp Superstore on Burnet Avenue in Syracuse will celebrate its 60th year in business this fall, and although times change, the dealership’s reputation for providing the best customer service continues. In October of 1954, Bill Rapp, Sr., started the business as a Pontiac dealership in Downtown Syracuse. In 1965 it moved to its current location. “We were one of the first to move to the ‘outskirts’ of the city,” his son, Bruce Rapp, said. “Most dealers were either located in Automobile Row or somewhere in the city.” Bill had three sons, Bill Rapp Jr. Bruce and Jerry Rapp, and continued to run the business. When both Bill Jr. and Sr. passed away in 2005, Bruce and Jerry stepped in as partners and coowners, carrying on the legacy begun by their father. “He taught us the importance of serving the customer,” Bruce said. “His philosophy was that if someone spends money with you, they deserve your very best effort every day.” Over the years the dealership represented a number of manufacturers, with a lineup of vehicles that included Jaguar, MG, Triumph and Land Rover. “Although we had many different brands come and go over the years, during that time we were primarily a Pontiac dealer,” Bruce said. When the economy struggled a few years back, GM decided to drop Pontiac from its roster. “We still have GMC and Buick, which are an important part of our business, but miss Pontiac – it’s the franchise we started with and had for a number of years.”

Early in the 1970s, the dealership took on a Subaru franchise. “At that time, no one knew what a Subaru was,” Bruce said. “I think we had one little Subaru sitting in the corner of our showroom for a year or so. Finally, someone realized that it was a sedan with four-wheel drive and the Subaru line took off in popularity. We are now proud to say that we are the number one Subaru dealer in the area.” Another wise decision was made by the Rapp family in 2007. “In December of that year we bought a Nissan franchise,” Bruce said. “Going back to our roots, when we had Pontiac, that franchise was known as the ‘excitement’ division within GM, which introduced a lot of new innovations. Then, if they were successful, they would show up on other models. Nissan today is much the same way. It is most innovative - they bring more new models and technology to the forefront and have the widest variety of vehicles for just about every segment of the business.” The line has been so successful that, within a couple of years after first introducing it, Bill Rapp Superstore put up a stateof-the-art Nissan signature facility on Burnet Avenue. “Nissan is extremely popular in Central New York,” Bruce said. “And the company continues to introduce new vehicles that are very current in style and technology, including the latest all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue, which is a beautiful vehicle, and the Ultima, which is in the running to be the number one selling midsize sedan.

East Syracuse Chevrolet to celebrate 85th anniversary 2013 was an excellent year at East Syracuse Chevrolet, according to dealer principle, Gino Barbuto. And 2014, the dealership’s 85th anniversary year, is starting out strong. “It’s a great time to be a Chevy dealer,” said Barbuto. “Chevrolet has its greatest lineup ever, including the North American Car and Truck of the Year,” Barbuto added. The 2014 Corvette Stingray took car honors and Silverado took the honors for the truck of the year at the North American International Auto Show in December. Barbuto said, “And almost every other model we sell has received very high marks, including high marks from the Insurance Institute for safety. We are very, very proud of the Chevrolet brand.” For the third year in a row, East Syracuse Chevrolet was number 1 in sales of Chevrolets in Central New York. When asked about the significance of the ranking, Barbuto said, “ It means more people are coming in to see us and there are more satisfied customers out there with Cuse Chevy.com on their license plate. Satisfied customers spread the word.” Barbuto said someone asked him how many cars he thought they’d sold in their 85 years in business. We’re growing and we’re grateful for the support of our customers.”

The office layout includes a freeflowing floor plan coupled with enhanced technology such as using tablets instead of desktop computers and employees trained to perform a variety of job functions. “It will have some traditional elements of a bank, because people still want that,” he says of the DeWitt location but will also be equipped for customers who prefer to use the latest technology. Features of the new branch office include: a “smart ATM” that makes check deposits immediately available, a conference room for loan closings and a “tech” area with coffee and a tablet for customer use. The bank will also provide commercial banking services and may add some other services such as insurance if demand warrants it, Mello said.

In addition to the new location, Solvay Bank will also be unveiling some new technology in 2014 that will benefit all of the bank’s customers. Within the next month, the bank will launch a redesign of their online mortgage platform, which is easy to use and features online profiles and portals for each of the bank’s mortgage consultants. This spring, the bank will launch Remote Check Capture for Mobile Banking, an additional feature to its already well-received mobile banking app. Customers will be able to take a picture of a check and deposit it from wherever they are using the app on their smartphones. Over the summer, Solvay Bank will continue its mobile banking technology improvements by adding an app designed specifically for the iPad platform.

2014 will bring some exciting changes for Solvay Bank. These include a new “SMART Office” in DeWitt and enhanced technology components that will improve the customer experience. The new office will be located at 6828 East Genesee St, next door to Aldi’s. The location will provide much-needed access for the existing customer base that Solvay Bank already has on the east side of Syracuse. “We need to have an office in that area,” said Karen Zarach, Vice President for Business and Marketing Strategy at the bank. “We’ve been working on this for quite some time.” Construction will start in the coming month and the location should be open in June. The 2,400-square-foot branch office will have three drive-through lanes and employ five people. “The bank wanted to make sure it found a good location before adding the new branch office,” Zarach said. “The site on East Genesee Street will let Solvay Bank easily reach customers in DeWitt, Fayetteville and all
