Charles Alsheimer to speak at Sportsmen’s Dinner at Driver’s Village

Charles J. Alsheimer, an award-winning outdoor writer, nature photographer, lecturer and whitetail consultant from Bath, N.Y., will speak at the Sportsmen’s Dinner held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Driver’s Village Conference Center. Alsheimer has devoted his life to photographing, writing and lecturing about the wonders of nature. “Central New York has historically been a great place to hunt, because there are great animals, great hunting opportunities and enthusiastic hunters,” Alsheimer said. “The DEC has done a decent job of managing herd and the resources are there. There is a tremendous diversity in the habitat, with many hills, valleys and flatland so the topography varies greatly and lends itself to a healthy deer population with a lot of agricultural land around it. “CNY also has the ability to grow large antler whitetails – that’s a plus,” he said. “Good soils in CNY helps to have a healthy deer population.” His specialty – both as a writer and photographer – is the whitetailed deer. “I was brought up on a farm in Steuben County. My parents were potato farmers and my dad was a deer hunter who introduced it to me at an early age. As you get older you start to wonder how you can make a living doing what you love, so I started taking photographs outdoors of everything from chickadees to grizzlies, but it was the whitetail that I loved. They are incredible athletes and can live in man’s backyard, within 100 yards of people without them knowing it. No other big game animal can do that. His love of the whitetail deer is certainly not unique. “Six out of 10 wildlife photos

published in America are of whitetail deer,” he said. “There are 10 million deer hunters in America, and if you look at an outdoor channel, 70 percent of the hunting shows are about whitetail deer. He said hunting for whitetail deer keeps hunting trips local. “It’s something every hunter in Central New York can enjoy. You don’t have to go to Alaska to hunt; you can do it right in your backyard.” Alsheimer is contributing editor for Deer and Deer Hunting magazine and co-host of the national television show “Deer & Deer Hunting TV,” which airs on NBC Sports Network. He is also a contributing editor for Whitetail News. His photography has won numerous state and national contests, and his articles and photographs have appeared in nearly every major outdoor publication. In addition, he has written six popular books on the whitetail and co-authored a seventh. Alsheimer also owns and operates a white-tailed deer research facility and provides consulting services to various segments of the whitetail industry. See Driver’s village, page 16

Premier antique, classic boat show Sept. 19-20 at Skaneateles Country Club

Miss America IX, the first boat in the world to exceed 100 mph, will be among the 150 boats on display at the Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) Annual Meeting and International Boat Show. The Society’s 39th annual show is open to the public Sept. 19 and 20 at the Skaneateles Country Club, 3344 W. Lake Rd. (Route 41A). The show runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and is handicap accessible. Free parking will be available on the country club grounds off Route 41A, with a shuttle to the show. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children. The international show will be double the size of the successful Finger Lakes Chapter (FLC) show, held each year in Skaneateles the last full weekend in July. The FLC is host to this year’s international show. “Expect to see the nicest vintage boats from across North America, displayed on water and land,” says event co-chair Janice Miller. All classes of antique and classic boats will be represented. Miss America IX, a 1930 Gar Wood Hydro-Plane owned by Charles “Chuck” and Diane Mistele, of Bluffton, S.C., is a legend in the boating world. “[It] takes your breath away in every respect,” Jonathan Stein wrote in Hagerty Classic Cars. Food will be available, and vendors will be set up on the grounds. Tours aboard the Judge Ben Wiles will be offered. Want to buy your own antique boat? You can do that, too, at the Field of Dreams. Boats will be judged on the ACBS’ 100-point format, which factors in

Miss America IX authenticity of restoration, quality of craftsmanship and extent of originality retained in the boat. Trophies will be presented prior to the exhibitors’ banquet Saturday evening, where winners of special non-judged awards and the People’s Choice Award will be named. A silent and live auction, with proceeds benefiting the ACBS scholarship fund, will be held at the exhibitors’ Friday evening dinner. The Antique and Classic Boat Society, founded in 1974 to protect and preserve the heritage of wooden boats, is headquartered in Clayton, N.Y. It has nearly 14,000 members and 56 chapters throughout the United States, Canada and France. For more information, go to acbs.org.

There’s plenty to do this fall at Ontario Orchards. Come and experience the best of New York State during Ontario Orchards’ 11th Annual Fall Jamboree from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 20 and 21, rain or shine. Learn about the farming experience, ride the fields and experience the natural beauty of living on a farm. For more than 45 years, the Ontario Orchard Farmers Market has been providing products from local farmers and our own farms to the surrounding community. The Ontario Orchards Farmers Market had its beginnings when Dennis Ouellette and his brother David began selling fruits and vegetables from their father’s farm. A family owned business for over more than four generations, Ontario Orchards is currently operated by Dennis Ouellette, his wife June, and two daughters, Kathy and Laurie. Ontario Orchards specializes in locally-grown produce, meats, eggs, cheese, apples and fresh-pressed apple cider. Their in-house bakery promises delicious homemade pies, cookies and pastries for any occasion baked fresh daily. The “growing” nursery, garden center and greenhouses provide plants that thrive because they are grown locally, creating products that are hardy to the area for years of enjoyment. A visit to Ontario Orchards is an adventure because there is always something new to be found. The store features a wide range of beautifully crafted items, See ontario orchards, page 22

Salmon River Fish Hatchery Open House planned for Sept. 27

A full day of children’s activities, fishing seminars and outdoor programs are planned for this year’s open house at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Salmon River Fish Hatchery. This is the 19th annual open house at the hatchery, located at 2133 County Route 22 in Altmar. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine on Saturday, Sept. 27. There is no admission charge. “This is the one opportunity during the year where the public is able to access the working parts of the hatchery with a personal tour,” said Fran Verdoliva, Salmon River program coordinator. “People of all ages can watch migrating salmon in the fish ladder through the underwater camera, see an exhibit on rare and endangered fish, and learn about the many opportunities for fishing and outdoor recreation along the Salmon River.” Visitors can tour the hatchery with DEC staff, learn about fishing for Pacific salmon, and learn about rare and endangered fish. Volunteers will teach how to cast a fishing rod, tie flies, and fly cast and fly fish along the beautiful scenery of the Salmon River Corridor. There are several activities for children, including fish identification, discovery of creatures of Beaverdam Brook, the popular “Backyard Bass” and “Hook and Ladders” fishing games, and the Oswego County Cooperative Extension 4-H laser shooting range. Tours of the hatchery will be given every 30 minutes starting at 10:30 a.m. Along with the special presentations, many conservation organizations and agencies will provide exhibits and information about outdoor recreation and conservation in the Salmon River ecosystem. Guests can also visit the nearby Salmon River Falls, a DEC Unique Area located four miles from the hatchery. The 110-foot waterfall offers trails and viewing areas with spectacular scenery. Yogi Bear... Family fun-close to you! Jellystone Park marks 44th year

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,” relax and enjoy being outdoors. Weekends from May 1 until the end of October are planned around a different theme. A typical day includes flag raising with Yogi Bear, wagon rides, crafts, field games and time with both Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. Camping facilities include campsites, cabins and park trailers and are available by day, week, month or season. The large Ranger Station includes a game room, Cindy’s Kitchen serving meals and ice cream, a fully-stocked store for gifts, souvenirs, RV/camping supplies, hardware, groceries, tackle and live bait. Propane is sold by the pound or metered. The Jumping Pillow continues to be extremely popular for camping guests. The camper response was truly awesome by all ages. Children, parents and grandparents could be observed bouncing on the pillow from open to close each day. The pillow is roughly 34 by 70 feet and can accommodate as many as 45 people of varied ages and weights. Parents remarked that family members were tired at the end of the day. They were ready to relax by the campfire then get some rest to be ready for the pillow the next day. Bouncing — fun and healthy exercise at the same time. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is located at 601 County Route 16, Mexico.

Plenty of Halloween fun is planned in September and October, with pumpkin decorating, trick-or-treats with Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo and a costume parade through the park. For more information call 963-7096 or visit jellystonecny. com. Propane is available year-round; call ahead. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
