Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy As the weather gets warmer, my outlook is brighter. Jennifer Stepping out my front door the other morning, I heard birds chirping – something you don’t hear often in winter, but Momsense take for granted once you are immersed in summer. Driving in my car, I felt a bit overheated, and was able to roll my window down partway in order to cool down. Again, it’s something you do many times in summer without thought, but, in that instant a few days ago, it gave my spirits a lift. That’s right — it’s spring. A time for renewal, rebirth, out with the old, in with the new, etc. etc. It’s also a time for many activities. Like bears emerging from hibernation, suddenly I see my formerly-housebound neighbors out doing yard work, cleaning out their garages or just strolling the neighborhood streets. This time of year also brings many organized activities — baseball, for one, and my son is going to play little league yet again, with my husband as assistant coach. We will most likely take in a Chiefs game as well, cheering on the home team along with our fellow Central New Yorkers. My daughter’s cheer team will soon be heading to a competition in Massachusetts, at a theme park where the kids will not only cheer on stage but will take a turn on the roller coasters and other thrill rides. But certainly there is no need to travel away from Central New York to have some thrills this spring. There will be a lot right here for those who live in our community to do, from attending festivals and other events to hiking, bird watching and swimming at our state and county parks. People will be running and biking on the canal pathways and along our many streets. Golfers will be on the links; anglers will be fishing our streams and lakes; boaters and jet skiers will take advantage of our waterways. It is a bustling, busy time, full of sunshine and breezy days that shake the buds on the trees. Greenhouses are busy, as are home improvement stores, and children start looking with anticipation towards the summer months that are on the horizon. So, just as I feel the sun warming my face during the first days of spring, I can feel something uncurling inside, waking up to the many possibilities of the season. Spring has sprung.

Simple spring activities to lift your spirits Sometimes it’s the little things that make you feel happy and look forward to all the season has to offer. Activities like:

Barbecuing Jen’s chicken kabob recipe Cut three pounds of chicken into one-inch cubes and marinate in Italian dressing; chill for at least two hours. Soak bamboo skewers in water for 10 minutes. Cut into one-inch squares two large green peppers, red peppers and vidalia onions. Alternate chicken and vegetables on the skewers. Heat up the grill, place the skewers on the grill for 10 minutes on each side, or until chicken is no longer pink. Remove and serve over rice or with a side of salt potatoes. Other suggestions for kabobs: tomatoes and pineapple.

Take a hike Pick your route — size doesn’t matter Whether a vigorous, uphill climb through the woods or a stroll around the block, there’s nothing like getting some fresh air into your lungs while enjoying the sights, sounds and smells of the season.

Clean up Serene surroundings The winter snow can cover up a lot of fallen branches, random trash and other debris in the yard and on the deck. Grab a trash bag or can and wander around outside your home. Picking things up now will not only improve your mood, but help you avoid toiling in the hotter months of summer.

Plant it! It is easy being green Visit your local greenhouse or hardware store and pick out some flowers or other greenery to dress up your landscape. There’s nothing like putting spade to fresh earth to get you in a spring state of mind.

Nine of CNY’s greatest holes L

ooking for a challenge? Here are nine great holes at public courses around Central New York. Some make the list for their confounding obstacles while others just provide a fair test and a pretty view. All are worth checking out.

Seven Oaks - No.1

Par 4 – 335/405/433 It may not be the signature hole, but the first at Seven Oaks provides as stiff a challenge as any hole on the course. With the campus as a backdrop, a good tee shot to the landing area in front of the creek leaves an uphill second shot to a well-bunkered green with a lateral hazard looming on the left. The green slopes severely in the front, up to a large plateau in the back. A par will make even the best golfer smile … until he realizes there are 17 more challenges ahead.

Camillus Country Club - No.14

Par 5 – 420/494/502 At 500 or so yards, with little bunkering and no water, accomplished golfers will look at this hole as a birdie opportunity. But while birdies can be had, so can snowmen. More of a semi-circle than a dogleg, woods on both sides find more than their fair share of errant shots, and any shot with a left-to-right tail on it will have the owner reaching into their pocket for another ball. The hole culminates in a long, narrow green that looks pool table flat, but has subtle, unrecognizable breaks. Members at the course often play the hole with three mid-irons, and happily walk away with par.

Radisson Greens - No. 3

Par 5 – 437/514/578 The third at Radisson regularly makes lists of the area’s top holes, and for good reason.

This three-shot par-5 offers multiple challenges to low- and high-handicappers alike. The tee shot comes out of a wooded shoot down to a landing area in front of a large pond – but don’t go too far, or you’ll be penalized before you even get started. From there, the second shot is a lay up to a fairway that gets narrower the more you try to bite off. If you manage the first two shots unscathed, you have a short iron over the edge of the pond to a small, sloping target. Good luck.

Green Lakes - No. 1

Par 4 – 395/363/355 The first hole at Green Lakes isn’t the best hole on the course. It doesn’t provide the stiffest challenge or the most unique experience. What it does provide is the best view. Waiting for your round to get underway at this beautiful spot doesn’t seem like a wait at all. The hole cascades down the side of a steep hill to an undulating fairway, leaving a short iron to a bowl shaped green. But it’s the vistas from the tee box that you’ll remember.

Erie Village - No. 16

Par 4 – 294/275/203 No guts, no glory. This tiny little hole is one of the best short par-4s in Central New York. The hole can be played around the water with a long iron and wedge, or straight across the pond to the smallish green with a driver. The carry from the back tees is less than 260 yards, so it’s drivable for advanced players, but danger lurks on all sides. So what’s it gonna be? Lay up, and work for a par, or bang one over the hazard and make a birdie? Like I said … no guts, no glory.

Lafayette Hills Golf & CC - No. 9 Par 4 – 384/374/293

Although short by comparison with many of the par-4s at Lafayette, the 9th is one of the most challenging, with an awkward tee shot to a landing area in between trees on the right and some ball gobbling bushes on the left. A good tee shot leaves a mid-iron approach straight up the hill to a green that slopes steeply from back to front. Don’t go long of this pin, or you’ll be putting for a while.

Timber Banks - No. 2

Par 5 – 558/514/405 It took a lot of imagination for Jack Nicklaus’ team to carve this hole out of the woods and fields hard by the Seneca River. Like many holes on this tricky course, it is protected by the three Ws: woods, waste areas and water. Target golf at its finest, you may end up hitting driver, 8-iron, 7-iron and be in good shape. But Timber Banks is known for greens that play tricks, and the second is no exception, with a massive swale in the middle of the green that can send balls skipping off in any direction to the collection areas beside the green. Playing it safe is usually the way to go, but on this hole, playing it safe is hard.

Foxfire at Village Green - No. 3

Par 3 – 180/155/133 Pick your poison. It’s picturesque from the tee, but don’t let that fool you. If you protect too much from the woods on the right, you’ll pull it into the water on the left. If that water gives you a chill, you might over compensate and send one into the bushes. And if you hit it straight at the pin, make sure you don’t go long, as that’s dead as well. Maybe it’s better just to stand up on the tee, enjoy the view and let your partner go first. See Nine holes page 13

Conklin Players Club - No. 8

Par 4 – 420/360/300 How much do you want to chew off? The tee shot on this treacherous test of golf goes across the edge of a large lagoon to a fairway that works away from you and to the right. If you bite off too much, you’ll be hit-

ting your third from the drop zone. Bite off too little and you’ll be out of reach for your second shot. Hit the perfect drive and you’re still left with a treacherous second shot to a green that cozies up to the other end of the pond. Although Conklin is a bit of a drive from Syracuse, tests like these make it worth the trip.

wine to pair with a variety of foods and is appealing in warm or cold weather. Dry rosé can also be a good transition to red wine for people who prefer whites because it has qualities of both types of wine, Nocek said. Dry rosé is less than 1 percent residual sugar and typically ranges in color from salmon to a light-red. It can be made through different methods, the most popular including the “Saignee method” which involves soaking the juice with skins (which extracts the red color) for up to 48 hours, then pressing off the juice and commencing the fermentation to dryness. Anyela’s makes its dry rosé through what they call a “modified run-off method.” They let Pinot Noir grapes ferment for four days with the skins on and then remove three-fourths of the “cap,” or skins. The

remaining “must” is then poured through a press to extract the juice and let it ferment to dryness in steel tanks. It is a varietal wine, meaning that it consists of at least 95 percent juice from the same type of grape, in this case Pinot Noir. The flavor of Anyela’s 2011 Rosé of Pinot Noir is described on their menu as: “Cherry, raspberry, and strawberry flavors abound with a finish of spice.” It sells for $14.95 a bottle. Anyela’s Vineyards is located at 2433 West Lake Rd., Skaneateles. They are now open for tastings every day of the week and their wines are available at stores throughout Central New York. Camping 101

Spring 2013

Explore CNY

Family vacations are a tradition for millions of families across the globe. Such vacations have declined in number over the last several years, when many families were forced to cut expenses in the midst of a struggling economy. One of the more affordable and familyfriendly vacation options is camping, and with so many great campgrounds right in Central New York, local families get the chance to experience some of nature’s most idyllic settings at a fraction of the cost of expensive resort vacations. But before venturing out in the great outdoors, a family should consider the following tips to ensure their camping vacation is a swimming success.

Research the weather.

Weather conditions will dictate which gear is necessary for the trip, and packing correctly for the weather can make the trip

more enjoyable. Find an activity-friendly campground. When looking for a campground, look for one that boasts a lot of activities. Adults might enjoy the simple relaxation of camping, but kids will likely need more to do. Look for a campground that can offer activities the children will like, such as hiking, kayaking, rafting, or even mountain biking. Determine who you are as campers. Not all campers enjoy the rustic life of camping. Some need to combine camping with the amenities of modern life, including running water and toilets that flush, such as the amenities to be found at Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville. Veteran campers might scoff at such amenities, and might eye the Adirondacks in selecting a more rugged campground, but families would likely prefer some combination of roughing it in the wild and modern day living.

Make your trip a success

Don’t forget the marshmallows A campfire wouldn’t be the same without roasting these wonderful confections, either to eat alone or in a s’more with the traditional graham cracker and chocolate shell. Or, why not try a variation? Roast a strawberry marshmallow or use a peanut butter cup in the s’more.

Get the right gear.

The good thing about camping gear is it’s reusable. If this year’s camping trip is a success, then next year’s trip won’t cost nearly as much. Visit a local camping store and explain your situation, including what you hope to get out of the camping trip and where you’ll be heading. An associate should be able to help you find the right gear for your trip, including a tent, lights, a water filter, cooking materials, and inflatable mattresses. The materials needed for a successful camping trip are many, but again these materials are reusable and can last a lifetime if families choose the right gear.

Stock up on the essentials.

Once you have purchased the right gear, don’t forget to stock up on the other essentials. Particularly during the warmer months, campgrounds can be very hot and insects abound. Be sure to bring adequate amounts of sunscreen and bug spray and apply each liberally every day. Even if the sky is overcast, apply sunscreen to avoid painful sunburn. Other essentials include toilet paper (bring more than you expect to use), bottled water, plates and utensils, and garbage bags. Be sure to bring extra garbage bags to avoid littering in the campground.

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away, relax and enjoy being outdoors. Weekends from May 3 until the end of October are planned around a different theme. The recreation staff provides planned activities seven days a week from June 28 until Labor Day Weekend. A typical day includes flag raising with Yogi

Bear, wagon rides, crafts, field games and time with both Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. Camping facilities include campsites, cabins and park trailers and are available by day, week, month or season. The large Ranger Station includes a game room, Cindy’s Kitchen serving meals and ice cream, a fully-stocked store for gifts, souvenirs, RV/camping supplies, hardware, groceries,

tackle and live bait. Propane is sold by the pound or metered. The annual Jellystone Park Open House will be May 17-19. The park will be open on Saturday and Sunday for the general public to tour the park facilities. There will be wagon rides, children’s activities, games with Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, a camper yard sale, crafters and entertainment. A great spring family fun day! One of the newer recreation phenomenons for camping guests — the Jumping Pillow — has been well received. The camper response was truly awesome by all ages. Children, parents and grandparents could be observed bouncing on the pillow from opening until closing each day. The pillow is roughly 34 feet by 70 feet and can accommodate as many as 45 people of varied ages and weights. Parents remarked that family members were tired at the end of the day. They were ready to relax by the campfire then get some rest to be ready for the Pillow the next day. Bouncing — fun and healthy exercise at the same time. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is located at 601 County Route 16, Mexico. For more information call 9637096 or visit jellystonecny.com. Propane is available year-round; call ahead. Dream factory seeks local heroes Non-Profit to Host First Annual Buzz Red, White and Blue event The Dream Factory of Syracuse is connecting local heroes with children in need. The not-for-profit will host its first annual Buzz Red, White and Blue Saturday, June 15, at Van Buren Park in Baldwinsville. “This event brings our hometown heroes together for a common purpose – to help grant the dreams of chronically ill children in greater Syracuse, said Crystal Erwin, secretary of the Dream Factory of Syracuse. Held the day after Flag Day, the event invites representatives of local fire departments (red), ambulance services (white) and police departments (blue) to shave their heads in an effort to raise money for the Dream Factory. The all-day event will feature food, fun and camaraderie as well as an opportunity to meet the organization’s existing and potential dream children who will be joining the day’s festivities. “While the event focuses on shaving the heads of firemen, EMTs and policemen, the opportunity is open to anyone who would like to raise money for our cause, Erwin said. To learn more about this event or to obtain a pledge sheet, contact Erwin at crystalerwin@ymail.com with a subject line of “Buzz Red, White and Blue. If you are interested in volunteering or making a financial contribu-

tion to benefit the newly formed organization, call 313-4543 or email Syracuse@dreamfactoryinc.org.

About Dream Factory

A long-standing, volunteer-based organization, Dream Factory is the second largest children’s wish-granting organization in the United States with a single goal – to give children suffering from a chronic or critical illness a reprieve from the struggles they face on a daily basis. “Just because a child is not terminally ill doesn’t mean every day is not a constant struggle. This is why we extend dream-granting to all children suffering from chronic and critical illnesses, said Erin Wisneski, the PR/marketing chair for the Dream Factory of Syracuse. “Whether meeting a famous celebrity or sending a child and his/her family on a dream vacation, Dream Factory gives these children a welcome diversion by granting their dreams, as well as unforgettable memories for them to share with their families, she said.
