Take me out to the ballgame — soon! To me, nothing says spring like a trip to NBT Stadium. Jennifer My husband and I gather up the kids, along with others such as the grandparents or friends of the family, Momsense and head to the ballpark to root on our hometown Chiefs. This tradition was started long ago in my famiy when I was a child and my parents brought my brother and I to McArthur Stadium to root on our team. The all-American sport of baseball comes with the feeling of springtime as you breathe in the scent of popcorn, peanuts and, well-you get the idea. Now that my children have come to expect a trip or two to see the Chiefs play, I have found a new love for the sport. Rain or shine, win or lose, we have had many memories made for our young family to treasure as we grow older together, and I know my children will bring their chidren to the park someday. But, enough with the sentimental side of things. Let’s hope our Chiefs do us proud this year! They, as well as well, get a fresh start in the spring. Many of you may remember that we at Eagle Newspapers host a popular event— a night with the Syracuse Chiefs, with free tickets availabe to our readers at our main office at 251 James St., Suite 100, in Syracuse. We have not yet set a date for this annual event, but stay tuned to eaglenewsonline.com and an announcement will be coming down the pike shortly. So, with winter behind us, the thought of watching as the Chiefs run the bases and field balls to the delight of the crowd, inevitably finds me thinking of spring and sunshine. After the long, cold winter, I couldn’t be happier to know that soon I will be taking a walk down memory lane as I enter the stadium.

Enjoy tastings, food at Wine in the Woods Tickets are on sale to the public for the Second Annual “Wine in the Woods” fundraising event for Camp Good Days and Special Times. This event sold out in its first year, so it will be doubled to two nights in 2014, Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 at Green Lakes State Park in Fayetteville. The one-of-a-kind event will feature six stations on a portion of the Green Lake Trail that will be offering medal-winning wines from around the world from the organization’s Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, and some light local appetizers, including bread with dipping oil and balsamic vinegar from Olive on Brooklea, and cheeses from Cabot’s Creamery. Some of the stations will offer beer tastings and other non-alcoholic refreshments, provided by Middle Ages Brewing Company and others. Following the tastings on the trail, there will be a reception in the Old Administration Building, where guests can enjoy more wine and beer tastings, local food from Diamond Catering and other refreshments. Local entertainment will include Ronnie Leigh on Friday night, with Saturday’s entertainer pending. There will be a silent auction featuring items such as sailing lessons for two on Skaneateles Lake with Skaneateles Sailing Club, a year of beer from Empire Brewing Co., an overnight stay at Bonnie Castle Inn Resort and Marina in Alexandria Bay, and a hot air balloon ride. “We are so grateful for the outpouring of support from our community last year that made this event so successful, and that we’re receiving ten fold this year. We are happy to be able to expand to two nights this year and anticipate a very quick sell out!”, said Claire McKenney, Camp Good Days CNY Regional Director. “Fundraisers like this are so important, because they have

Carpenter’s Brook Fish Hatchery is geared up and ready for trout fishing season with the return of the popular public fishing program. Through May 25, families and individuals can enjoy a morning of fishing at the facility. Sessions are offered each Saturday, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost to fish is $5 per person with bait, rods and reels provided. Reservations are required. Jellystone Park marks 44th year

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,” relax and enjoy being outdoors. Weekends from May 2 until Oct. 17 are planned around a different theme. The recreation staff provides planned activities seven days a week from June 27 until Labor Day Weekend. A typical day includes flag raising with Yogi Bear, wagon rides, crafts, field games and time with both Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. Camping facilities include campsites, cabins and park trailers and are available by day, week, month or season. The large Ranger Station includes a game room, Cindy’s Kitchen serving meals and ice cream, a fully-stocked store for gifts, souvenirs,

RV/camping supplies, hardware, groceries, tackle and live bait. Propane is sold by the pound or metered. The annual Jellystone Park Open House will be May 17 and 18. The park will be open on Saturday and Sunday for the general public to tour the park facilities. There will be wagon rides, children’s activities, games with Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, a camper yard sale, crafters and entertainment. A great spring family fun day! One of the most popular recreation phenomenons for camping guests — the Jumping Pillow — has been well received. The camper response was truly awesome by all ages. Hot air balloons will take to the skies over the Sandy Creek Fairgrounds and there will be plenty of action on solid ground with music, a petting zoo, crafts and vendors June 6, 7 and 8 at the Oswego County Balloon Festival. The event opens at 3 p.m. Friday, June 6, and closes with music by Frostbit Blue Sunday night, June 8. At least 10 hot air balloons in a variety of styles are scheduled to fly, with balloon launches Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday morning, and Saturday and Sunday nights, weather permitting. After the sun sets Saturday evening, spectators will be treated to the sight of glimmering hot air balloons in flight during the “balloon glow” from 9 to 10 p.m. The event is being organized by All Over Events of Pulaski. “The Sandy Creek Fairgrounds are an ideal setting for a balloon festival,” said event planner Melissa Stevens. “Back in the days of the traditional agricultural fairs around the turn of the century, hot air balloonists were frequent visitors at country fairs. Kids Fishing Weekend held at Wellesley Island Wellesley Island State Park, the largest undeveloped stretch of waterfront in the scenic 1000 Islands region of the St. Lawrence River, will be the site of a kids fishing weekend over the Memorial Day Weekend. Held at the park’s Minna Anthony Common Nature Center, the weekend will kickoff with two kids fishing classes conducted by author/photographer Spider Rybaak on May 24, and a fishing derby on May 25. Free fishing classes lasting for two hours each will be held on Saturday: bait and lure fishing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.; followed by fly-fishing lessons from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 pm. All bait and tackle will be provided for the classes; bring your own if you have it. Students 16 and over must have a fishing license. On the following day, a fishing derby will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. It will be restricted to children 14 and younger. Prize packages containing several hundred dollars’ worth of fishing tackle and accessories will be awarded in three categories: the longest, heaviest and most fish. Staged as a fund raiser for the nature center, a $2 entry fee will be charged to compete in the derby. Participants will be required to fish from shore along the Nature Center’s waterfront. Fish must be taken with rod and reel; all legal baits will be allowed. The weekend is sponsored by Friends of the Nature Center, Spider Rybaak, SAMPO, Shakespeare, Berkley, Cortland Line Co. and Ande Monofilament. The parade of world-class, nationally televised boxing events continues at Turning Stone Resort Casino as the ESPN Friday Night Fights Boxcino Championship tournament will hold its middleweight semifinals in the Event Center, Friday, April 18. The championship finals in the lightweight and middleweight divisions will also be held at Turning Stone, Friday, May 23, also live on ESPNâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Friday Night Fights. The middleweight semifinal bouts will be eight rounds each, and will feature Willie Monroe Jr. (16-1, 6 KOs) of Rochester, taking on undefeated Vitaliy Kopylenko (23-0, 13 KOs) of Ukraine. The other semifinal bout pits Brandon Adams (13-0, 9 KOs) of Los Angeles, Calif., against Raymond Gatica (14-2, 9 KOs) of Austin, Texas. Kopylenko, Adams, and Gatica each advanced to the semifinals with knockout victories Feb. 28. Monroe won a unanimous decision in his quarterfinal bout, for his sixth consecutive victory. The full list of undercard bouts for the April 18 boxing were not yet announced at press time, and all bouts are subject to change. The middleweight semifinal winners will return to Turning Stone, Friday, May 23 for the Boxcino Championship final. The May 23 event will also feature the lightweight championship final. Hello from the Land of Oz Parade to feature new elements

The annual OZ-Stravaganza! Parade will be held starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. The OZ-Stravaganza! committee announced some new elements to the parade this year, hoping to build on what is already a great event. They are going to be introducing the parade, scene by scene from the original movie. Anyone interested in doing a specific scene from the MGM movie and does not want to duplicate another unit, contact Jim Raulli at jraulli@townofsullivan.org. A list will be compiled based solely on the information given by other parade units on their application.

If a duplicate occurs, the second unit will be contacted and give the option to change their entry. This list will be based on the first-received basis. Annual ‘Royal Historian of Oz’ Writing Contest held Entrants in this year’s contest must write a story of 400 to 500 or fewer words depending on grade level, and using all of the 15 words listed at oz-stravaganza.com. There are five categories for

World record attempt planned in Chittenango As promised at the 2013 Oz-Stravaganza!, the 36th annual Oz-Stravaganza! festival in Chittenango will include an attempt to break the world record for most people in “Wizard of Oz” movie character costumes in one location. The attempt will take place on Satur-

day June 7 prior to the Grand Oz Parade. Everyone young and old are encouraged to participate in this history making event. Costumes must be easily recognizable and must be full costumes. Costumed characters are encouraged to march in the parade following the

Come to the Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum for this statewide event to to celebrate, improve and enhance state parks and historic sites. In Oneida, come join the Oneida Rail Trail Committee to celebrate I Love My Park Day, when volunteers will help pick up litter, clear overgrown brush, assess maintenance/painting projects and make other improvements along the three-mile stretch of the Old Erie Canal from Route 46 in Oneida to North Court Street in Wampsville.
