FROM THE editor
Go Fish: Public Fishing
Here we go, CNY!
I
don’t know about you, but I am so ready for the Jennifer upcoming months — warmer temperatures, sunny skies and no snow in Momsense the forecast (hopefully!) In my position as editor, I am always looking ahead — getting stories and calendars ready for this, or another publication, weeks, even months ahead. This can be difficult, at times, because I feel I am missing out on the current season. Not so when it comes to planning out Explore CNY, spring edition! Are you ready to get serious about your golf game? Better check your diet By Perry Noun
Besides getting a series of lessons from a CNY PGA Professional, the fastest way to a healthy body and lower scores is to have a proper diet and loose some weight. You should know that golfers live, on average, five years longer than nongolfers because I remember telling you last year about the Karolinska Institute in Sweden who studied more than 300,000 golfers before reaching that conclusion. Those Swedes determined that depending on the length of the course, the terrain and your pace of play, “golfers can burn as many calories as a 45 minute intense workout, especially if they carry their own bag or pull a cart. It also reduces stress. Heart

Research UK was so impressed with the study that they recommended everyone in the U.K. take up golf. Sounds like a great plan for the U.S. general population. As good as it sounds, there is a warning that golfers can undue the good work on the golf course immediately afterwards. “Golfers need to get the balance right - a full English breakfast, heavy lunch and drinks at the clubhouse, could undue all of the benefits gained from your round says the study. Great point! “A good golf diet can not make an average golfer great, but a poor diet can make a great golfer average, said Dr. David Costill, Prof Emeritus Exercise Science, Ball State University. Here is what the doctor says
about Carbohydrates and Protien: Although equipment and physical fitness are important, Costill believes, “a balanced diet is often the most overlooked aspect that all serious golfers must consider. His definition of a balanced diet begins with eating at least 50 percent of your total caloric intake from carbohydrates such as whole grains, breads, pastas, rice, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy. He believes consuming carbohydrates during a round, “helps blood glucose levels that allow golfers to have improved concentration. Also, having six to eight ounces of protein such as round or loin cuts of beef, chicken, fish, beans or legumes are needed for the growth and repair of muscles. Fluids: “Hydration is an im-

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Mexico, N.Y. ... Family camping close 2 home Are you looking for a family oriented, fun filled, relaxing campground that’s Close2Home? Then it’s time for you to check out Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Mexico, N.Y. Bob & Marion Palmer purchased this beautiful campground in 2015, fulfilling a dream they have had for over 30 years. “The majestic summers in Central NY, the beauty of our campground and the wonderful guests who love what we have to offer has made this a great experience for us, actually more than we could ask or imagine.” Nestled along the Little Salmon River, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to ‘get away’, relax, enjoy the great outdoors and make lasting family memories. With their season stretching from April to October, each weekend is a different theme with crafts and activities related to each theme. In addition, campers of all ages enjoy wading, tubing and sunbathing in the Little Salmon River. Other activities include wagon rides with Yogi Bear & Boo Boo, jumping on the Jumping Pillow, racing through an inflatable Obstacle Course, a swimming pool, 18-hole mini-golf course, GaGa Ball pit, basketball court, water
balloon launch game, gemstone mining and so much more. This campground offers a variety of camping options in a beautiful setting including riverfront campsites, water/electric sites, full hook-up sites, deluxe cabins, park model trailers and rustic cabins. When you arrive at the campground store, not only are you greeted by their friendly, customer focused staff, but you are amazed by the huge variety of camping merchandise available, gifts and apparel, groceries, a game room and outstanding softserve ice cream, sundaes, slushies and more. Bob and Marion are very passionate about providing employment opportunities for the community surrounding their campground. With a staff of 28 people, approximately 12-15 are local high school students; oftentimes it’s their very first job. “We believe it’s important to support our local community, and we enjoy providing first-time job opportunities for students to learn skills that will last a lifetime” say the Palmers. “Our returning staff members and new hires last year were fantastic and are clearly part of the reason we have been successful each year.”
Submitted photo Bob and Marion Palmer are pictured with Yogi Bear and Ranger Smith.
The overall customer review ratings on Trip Advisor, Facebook and the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park franchise customer surveys show continuous improvement too. Marion said, “Feedback from returning campers continues to be very positive, they like our approach to customer service and the improvements we make each year to upgrade our campground.” This year the Palmers are installing a new Jumping Pillow, a new Gemstone Mining Sluice and renovating some of their park model trailers. The Yogi Bear Jellystone Park franchise organization also recognized Bob and Marion in 2017 with several awards includ-
ing the Outstanding Customer Service Award, Pinnacle Award (for scoring above 98 percent on their annual campground inspection), Entrepreneur of the Year nominee and Operator of the Year nominee. The Palmers said they are looking forward to another great year in 2018 and appreciate the continued support of their many loyal customers. If you’re looking for a new place to camp, check them out at jellystonecny.com or on Facebook at facebook.com/jellystonecny. 2018 Madison County Visitors Guide now available
M
adison County Tourism, the county’s official tourism promotion agency, announced that the 2018 Madison County Visitors Guide is now available. The 32-page magazine, which features a scenic shot of Chittenango Falls on the cover, presents readers with a taste of what there is to see and do in Madison County. “We’re very excited about this publication,” said Truman Hartshorn, Acting President of Madison County Tourism. “We’ve adapted to shifting tourismplanning trends by eliminating directory-style listings, replacing them with articles about the county and eye-catching photographs that will inspire readers to visit our website for even more information. Also, to help readers from far and wide easily identify where the county is located, we’ve placed ‘Central New York’ at the top of the cover again this year.” Hartshorn noted that for the first time ever, the Visitors Guide can be read electronically on www.MadisonTourism. com.
Madison County Tourism will distribute 35,000 printed copies of the guide at numerous visitor information centers and kiosks throughout the state and county and at more than a dozen trade shows in the US and Canada. The guides will also be mailed to prospective visitors upon request. Tourism is a vital industry in Madison County. According to data from Tourism Economics, visitors spent $88.9 million in Madison County in 2016. This spending generated $6.1 million in local taxes, which saved the average household $412 and sustained more than 2,000 jobs in the county. The guide was produced by Romanelli Communications of Clinton and printed by Kenyon Press of Sherburne. The cover photograph was taken by Jerry Weimar of New Woodstock.
