Get ready for a booming summer in Syracuse Submitted by Visit Syracuse

S

o far, 2018 has been a busy year for tourism in Syracuse due largely to the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Open Championships, which concludes on July 8. The event will bring upwards to 10,000 fiveplayer teams, plus friends and families, and restaurants and hotels have seen first-hand the impact that the USBC is having on their business: “The bowlers have been great for business! We have been at a summer volume since they arrived,” said Jason Ryan of Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, “One bowler sat at the bar from 4 p.m.-midnight and said he loved it so much he wasn’t leaving!” The new Central New York Welcome Center at Destiny USA has also seen the impact of the bowlers. “We’ve seen a huge increase in sales of our official New York branded souvenir products, we’ve been giving away a bowling pin and ball chocolate mold by Speech Candy as gifts to bowlers for stopping by and we’ve seen about 150-200 bowlers visit us in the past two months,” said Allyson Towndrow, manager of the CNY Welcome Center. County Executive Joanie Mahoney and Legislature Chairman Ryan McMahon worked

collaboratively with Visit Syracuse in 2013 to secure the USBC for 2018. It has certainly paid off. A recent Smith Travel Research (STR) Destination Report validates that in April, thanks mostly in part to USBC business, when measured against competitors from Buffalo, Albany, Rochester and Saratoga, Syracuse went from last place to first place in hotel occupancy at rate of 65 percent. At this half-way point of the USBC Open Championships the community is right on track to hit the local economic impact estimation of over $75 million. In recent years, the impact of increased tourism on the local economy has been undeniable. None of this would be possible without the collaboration of many local businesses, attractions and people working together to enhance our tourism product. The future looks bright with a county and city administration looking to extend this progressive growth for many years to come, as an increase in tourism impacts the entire CNY region. So what more can we expect this summer? With an abundance of festivals, live music, recreation and fun, whether it be a weekend trip, conference, family vacation or visiting friends and relatives, visitors (and residents alike) are looking to get out there and join in on the good times,

the ‘Season of cny’

Syracuse Chiefs have plenty of fun planned for fans this summer

T

he Syracuse Chiefs have lots in store for fans this year. This year’s overarching promotional theme is “Season of Central New York,” said Jason Smorol, general manager. “We saw the pride and how much our community embraced our Salt Potato promotion last year so we decided to up the local flavor this year and truly celebrate our home here in CNY,” said Smorol. This year the Chiefs are recognizing and paying tribute to some of the things that make our hometown unique. Aug. 23-26 will see the Salt Potatoes take the field for four days in a row. This Salt Potato “Power Move” weekend will feature a Dollar Thursday on Aug.

New York State Fair will greet an estimated one million attendees. The current construction of the Expo Center is set to open up new possibilities for the fairgrounds and the region. The new facility is the perfect platform to appeal to the current large and potentially larger equestrian show market, attracting new related events as well. Meetings and conventions are a crucial component to the area’s tourism industry. The redevelopment of the Marriott Syracuse Downtown and it’s designation as the official convention center hotel together with an influx of new and remodeled hotels throughout CNY have enhanced the approach of pursuing convention business. As a result, Visit Syracuse has been able to open up discussions with several large state associations who are now considering or re-considering the destination for upcoming meetings. Visit Syracuse President, Danny Liedka, reported that current meeting/convention/ event business booked directly through Visit Syracuse sales efforts shows definite room
