Yogi Bear... Family fun-close to you! Jellystone Park marks 42nd year

Open since 1970, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park offers fun activities for families wishing to “get away,” relax and enjoy being outdoors. Weekends from May 1 until the end of October are planned around a different theme. The recreation staff provides planned activities seven days a week from June 25 until Labor Day Weekend. A typical day includes flag raising with Yogi Bear, wagon rides, crafts, field games and time with both Yogi Bear and Boo Boo. Camping facilities include campsites, cabins and park trailers and are available by day, week, month or season. The large Ranger Station includes a game room, Cindy’s Kitchen serving meals and ice cream, a fullystocked store for gifts, souvenirs, RV/camping supplies, hardware, groceries, tackle and live bait. Propane is sold by the pound or metered. Recently one of the newer recreation phenomenons for camping guests — the Jumping Pillow — was installed. The camper response was truly awesome by all ages. Children, parents and grandparents could be observed bouncing on the pillow from open to close each day. The pillow is roughly

CNYW helps with water management in the Oswego River Drainage Basin Central New York Waterways, Inc. has been representing waterfront owners, businesses, fisherman and recreational boaters around the Oswego River Drainage Basin (the Basin) since 1984. Our primary mission is to stabilize water levels across the Oswego River Drainage Basin and as a secondary mission we are working to eradicate invasive aquatic species. The Basin encompasses the Erie Canal from Macedon to Rome and the Cayuga-Seneca and Oswego Canals. It drains a total area of 5,122 square miles into Lake Ontario. The area of the basin is larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined. The draining area is drained by the Oswego, Oneida, Seneca and Clyde Rivers. The drainage area includes all of Seneca County; most of Onondaga, Cayuga, Tompkins, Schuyler, Yates and Ontario counties; large parts of Oswego, Oneida, Madison and Wayne counties; and smaller parts of Lewis, Cortland, Chemung, Steuben, and Livingston Counties. Most of New York’s largest lakes, Oneida and Finger lakes are in the Basin. The working partnership between the NYS Canal Corporation and CNYW provides a better understanding of what is happening and possibly why on both sides. On site evaluations provided to the Canal Corporation

NEW for the 2012 Season Soaring Eagle Zipline

helps assess different situations. There is a need for more coherent and comprehensive system of water management in the Basin. In 2005 the NYS Canal Corporation recommended a “Canal System-wide real- time monitoring system with the forecasting tools necessary to project flood estimates, allowing lake managers and the Canal Corporation to make decisions based upon an accurate assessment of basinwide conditions. This is necessary to ensure decisions affecting water levels are made after careful consideration of consequences to all parties.” This is a long process and will take a lot of money to make something like this happen but we are working on it! Recently NYW’s has partnered with the Oneida Lake Association. Founded in 1945 to protect, restore and preserve the natural resources of Oneida Lake and its surrounding ecosystem the OLA has evolved from what was once perceived as a fishing association to what has today become a powerful environmental partnership group. Together we are working to improve the weather/flood forecasting for the Central New York region plus obtain additional tools needed to manage a basin of this size. The public is invited to attend CNYW’s annual meeting Wednesday June 20 at the Baldwinsville Library. Please join us and please consider becoming a member. Dues are $8 for individual/family and $25. for a business. For more information contact Doyle at 730-7498 or mjdoyle@twcny.rr.com.

Dream Factory is kicking it old school. The Dream Factory of Syracuse recently wrapped its first fundraiser, which raised nearly $1,000 for the organization. Now volunteers are excitedly working on their next event – Kicks for Kids. A newly formed Central New York chapter of the long-standing, volunteer-based national organization, Dream Factory of Syracuse will host a kickball tournament on Saturday, Aug. 18, with the help of Syracuse Area Kickball Association. “Kickball is a fun, easy game for everyone to enjoy, said Lisa DePalma, the fundraising chair for the Dream Factory of Syracuse. “We think this will be a great way to get people of all ages involved to help advance the goals of our organization, which is granting dreams to children in the greater Syracuse area suffering from an illness. Prizes will be awarded to the kickball team that wins the tournament as well as the kickball team that raises the most funds. Individuals interested in forming teams can call 313-4543. A national organization with 37 chapters, Dream Factory is the second largest children’s wish-granting organization in the United States with a single goal – to give children suffering from a chronic or critical illness a reprieve from the struggles they face on a daily basis. “Just because a child is not terminally ill doesn’t mean every day is not a constant struggle. This is why we extend dream-granting to all children suffering from chronic and critical illnesses, DePalma said “Whether meeting a famous celebrity or sending a child and his/ her family on a dream vacation, Dream Factory gives these children a welcome diversion by granting their dreams, as well as making unforgettable memories for them to share with their families. Call 313-4543 for more information and to register.

Different spokes for different folks

Websites share where to find bike trails, fellow CNY cyclists Ready to do some pedal pushing, but not sure where to go? Looking for long, winding country roads or more challenging, uphill routes? Visit bikecny.wordpress. com to view maps of trails and other pointers about cycling in Central New York.

Join the club

Are you looking for likeminded bike enthusiasts? There are many cycling clubs around, such as the Onondaga Cycling Club, onondagacyclingclub.org or Finger Lakes Cycling Club,

flcycling.org, or visit usacycling.org to find a club near you.

Run, walk or hike

Not looking to buy a bike? Sick of spending all kinds of money on exercise equipment you don’t use? All you need to for a nice walk, hike or jog is a pair of sneakers, a bottle of water and the air in your lungs. Whether on the trails at Highland Forest, on the sidewalk of your neighborhood or on the track at your local high school, there are plenty of places to stretch your legs and get your blood pumping. If you like to idea of having company on your journey, there are many running clubs in the Central New York area, such as the Syracuse Chargers Track Club, syracusechargers.org.

Can your company take the Corporate Challenge? A good company makes it a priority to stay “financially fit” if it wants to prosper, but many do not realize that staying physically fit is a good way to ensure greater financial fitness. “If you’re an employer, and you have healthier employees, your bottom line is healthier. Employees will take fewer sick days, have more energy,” pointed out Dave Oja, a name familiar to serious runners of the Syracuse area. “That sort of thing translates to profit.” This year, on June 19, the JPMorgan Chase & Co. Corporate Challenge celebrates its 30th year of heralding this very message of physical fitness in the workforce to Syracusans of all employment backgrounds and run-

ning abilities. The Corporate Challenge began as a reaction to the New York Marathon, which was just getting started in the late 1970s. JPMorgan was a sponsor of the marathon, but they wanted to come up with something for their clients that was a little more achievable than a 26.2-mile run. Thus, the Corporate Challenge was born with its unique 3.5-mile distance, longer than a 5K, but still doable at nearly any age or level of fitness. The event began in Upstate New York, but now, it takes place in seven countries on five continents. It is bank owned and operated, and the rules are the same in every city in which it is held. Spring Open at Timber Banks a big success

Par 29

The Third Annual Timber Banks Spring Open was held Saturday and Sunday, June 2 and 3, to much success. The always-popular Timber Banks Golf Academy event featured free clinics, led by Director of Instruction Kevin Savage along with help from Jim Roy, Evan LaBarge and the ProNouns. A new addition this year was the availability of demo equipment at the driving range from Titleist, Taylor Made and Tour Edge. This gave those in attendance a great opportunity to try out some of the newest clubs on the market and get a few pointers from the Timber Banks Golf Academy staff. After the golf on Saturday, Timber Banks hosted its first-ever Spring Fling at the Wedding & Banquet Center. The event featured live music, drink specials and free raffle prizes including a chance to win a free driver fitting with a brand new Titleist or Taylor Made driver, open to all who participated in the Golf Academy clinics. Special Events Coordinator Angela Pudney also had new menu items available for guests to try. Sunday was Junior Day at Timber Banks with a U.S. Kids Golf demo day, junior clinic and kids 13 and under playing for free from the PGA Family Tees. In addition to the activities, the Timber Banks Golf Academy had all of its Junior Program information available to parents and offered discounts. Syracuse or Singapore, the race is the same distance, the same price, requires the same number of hours worked to take part, and it is always held after work on a weekday. Even with these same rules, each event has its own identity that reflects the business community of the area, according to Alan Tieuli, a representative for JPMorgan Chase and the Corporate Challenge. The Corporate Challenge allows for the worlds of work and play to coalesce, a way for people to have their cake and eat it, too (although most of what people eat at the event is barbecued!). Oja, the race director for the area Corporate Challenge, attributes its success in Syracuse to the friendly competition. “It’s a nice mix of competition, but you also get this tremendous camaraderie atmosphere, Oja said. “And all that is seasoned with business networking. Running as a company team is an important element of the Corporate Challenge’s attraction. It’s easier to get motivated by running with a group, and as Kristin White notes, “There’s a certain amount of extra pride that goes along with competing for your company name. White is a professional triathlete, and she also works as a pharmacist for Wegmans. She has placed first among women five times at the Corporate Challenge, and she loves the event because of the opportunity to get together with coworkers outside the workplace. She prefers to compete with a team, saying, “I like the extra component of having people out there cheering for you. And even if you’re not doing your best, you can be excited for [your coworkers] if they’re having a good day. There is no event like the Corporate Challenge, and it is always rewarding, whether financially or physically. Oja mentioned some success stories, saying, “People would tell me, the first race I ever ran was the Corporate Challenge. I used to be a smoker, and then it was so much fun, I stopped smoking and became a runner. White expressed a similar sentiment: “There are thousands of people who run, but even if only two people pick up the sport of running or pick up daily exercise, it’s worth it for those two people.
