FROM THE editor

Summer is all about fun

With the temperatures finally where I like them, I have my priorities in Jennifer line: Family fun in the sun first, work second and anything having to do with chores or laundry a distant third. Time Momsense is short, particularly summertime in Central New York, and to waste a moment of it, in my mind, would be a crying shame. I’m not saying that my house will be in hibernation mode, with food spoiling in the refrigerator and the furniture covered in bed sheets, but if you can’t eat off of my floors or if my piano doesn’t pass the white glove test for dust, I am not going to cringe in embarassment. With my family’s camp holding the promise of so many great memories to be made and the deck at my house offering the perfect spot on which to lounge, cook out and host friends and family, I plan to spend as much time in the sunshine as possible. Unfortunately, summer is but a few months out of the year, gone in the blink of an eye. In fact, the only thing that helps me get through the end of summer is the New York State Fair. Thank goodness for this week-plus event packed with great food and entertainment to help take the sting out of the fact that fall is right around the corner, which is a bittersweet time for me as well as

Wing

many Central New Yorkers, I’m sure. So make sure to enjoy the season – summer is all about fun and family. On the pages of this edition of Explore CNY you will find many ideas for outings and events to make the most of this, my favorite season.

Water Safari adds new attraction for little ones One predictable question asked every year about Enchanted Forest Water Safari is; “What’s new this year? This summer the youngest ones in the family can experience the thrill of downhill water racing at Enchanted Forest Water Safari with the premiere of “Walter’s Wild Slide. Named after the park’s moose mascot, Walter Safari, the new attraction is a brilliant purple- and green-colored, four-lane, Kiddie Pro-Racer manufactured by Proslide Technology Inc. of Ottawa, Ontario. “This new ride is designed with the park’s youngest guests and their parents in mind, said co-owner Katie Wojdyla. “There are four side-by-side lanes that riders slide down feet first into a splash pool. The lanes create a fun racing environment that adds a sense of competitive excitement for the youngsters. At 70 feet long, “Walter’s Wild Slide is the park’s largest water slide specifically for kids. “It’s bigger and it’s better than any other slides we’ve done for the little ones, Wojdyla said. “Our mascot, Walter Safari, is a lovable, friendly character and this new slide name ties in perfectly. The construction of the new ride has been underway for several months and it is expected to open this summer. Located in New York’s Adirondack State Park in Old Forge, N.Y., the Enchanted Forest Water Safari is New York’s largest water theme park with over 50 rides and attractions including 32 of the wettest and wildest water rides.

On May 22, the official ground breaking for the new Northwest YMCA located on River Road in Baldwinsville was held at the Timber Banks Wedding and Event Center. The ceremony began with Timber Banks owner Gary Pooler handing over the deed to the land to Northwest’s YMCA Chair Cindy Dowd Greene. Pooler was thanked for his vision and generosity in bringing the YMCA to Timber Banks. More than 75 people attended the event along with every major news outlet in Central New York. This is a very exciting time to live in the Baldwinsville-Clay area. The YMCA will be a central hub for many family and children’s programs. The staff of Timber Banks is very excited to be a part of the new YMCA. The 98,000-square-foot YMCA is expected to open in June of 2015.

The camper response was truly awesome by all ages. Children, parents and grandparents could be observed bouncing on the pillow from opening until closing each day. The pillow is roughly 34 feet by 70 feet and can accommodate as many as 45 people of varied ages and weights. Parents remarked that family members

were tired at the end of the day. They were ready to relax by the campfire then get some rest to be ready for the Pillow the next day. Bouncing — fun and healthy exercise at the same time. Lake Ontario summer fishing forecast By Spider Rybaak

A preliminary report published recently by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation indicates the fishing on Lake Ontario has improved steadily over the past decade, and this summer promises to see more of the same. “New York’s 2013 Lake Ontario Fisheries Program Highlights,” dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27068. html, gathers fisheries data from DEC sources, combines it with information gleaned from the U.S. Geological Survey, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and other partners, and compiles a glowing report on the tiniest Great Lake’s fishery. The section most relevant, especially to anglers planning fishing trips this summer, is the Sportsfishery Assessments starting on page 3. Drawn from the 2013 Open Lake Fishing Boat Survey conducted between April 15 and Sept. 30, 2013, the highlights of its findings include: 3 Based on information provided by charter boats, last year’s per-hour catch rate for salmon and trout was the fourth highest in the survey’s 29-year history. 3 Last year was the 11th in a row of excellent king salmon fishing, with growth rates remaining above average. 3 Catch rates for brown trout approached near record levels, reaching almost 22 percent

in the 29-year data series. 3 Atlantic salmon appeared regularly in creel surveys. 3 While the estimated number of boat trips targeting smallmouth bass dropped to its lowest level in the data series, reflecting the dramatic See fishing, page 16

decrease in bronzeback populations during the first decade of the century, populations have rebounded dramatically, sparking a 69.7 percent increase in angler interest over the past three years.

More of the Same

Scott Prindle, Senior Fisheries Biologist with NYSDEC’s Region 7, said, “This year’s fishing should be every bit as good as [in 2013]. Salmon and trout may be smaller because last winter’s severity had a negative impact on alewife populations but, overall, salmonid numbers are higher.” “Even with slightly smaller fish, Lake Ontario still offers the largest salmonids in the Great Lakes,” said Prindle.

Lake Ontario’s Incredible Productivity

NYSDEC deserves a lot of the credit for launching the tiniest Great Lake’s fishery to world-class status and keeping it there. Its hatcheries greatly augment the lake’s natural reproduction. In addition, the agency’s zealous cormorant management program and its never-ending battle against lamprey eels are bearing fruit, increasing long term survival rates of all the lake’s sports fish, free of the terrible scars that marred large numbers of trophies in the recent past. Still, not all of Lake Ontario offers consistent, diverse, year-round populations of freshwater’s most popular fish. For that, you have to go to where the food and waters flow. And the best spot on the eastern half of the lake is the territorial waters of Oswego County. • Installation & Service • Fully Insured • Chain Link, PVC Ornamental Iron, Custom Wood • Stockade, Post & Rail (Split Rail) • Insurance Estimates (Repairs)

Home to the world-famous Salmon (massive quantities of monster trout, salmon and smallmouth bass) and Oswego Rivers (trout, salmon, walleyes, black bass, catfish, carp, sheepshead and panfish), and watered by more skinny creeks than you can shake a long rod at on a good day, Oswego County claims the most productive corner of the lake. Add spectacular sunsets and scenic waterfront to the picture and you come up with the stuff dreams are made of. So gather the family and come up to Oswego County’s magical stretch of New York’s north shore. You’ll make memories you’ll be talking about for years. ‘Slip and whip’ into summer at the Lorenzo Driving Competition By Janis Barth Move over “wine and dine.” The Lorenzo Driving Competition is bringing “sip and whip” to Cazenovia this summer. Lorenzo does sport and pleasure like no other event. Elegant horses, drivers in Victorian finery and a chance to sample the region’s best food and drink: There’s no better reason for anyone who loves horsemanship — or a good time — to come to Cazenovia in July. “The magic of the Lorenzo Driving Competition is that it provides both a historical and modern perspective of what horses meant to society,” said Tim Williams, co-manager of this year’s show. “The format of the show provides exposure to a wide Gene Gissin Photography range of types and breeds of horses not normally seen in one place. We are so lucky to have these resources, and their presence on the show grounds is exciting.” Information on how to make reservations for both nights is available on the Lorenzo competition website, lorenzodriving.com, or by calling Woltman at 655-5496. For anyone in need of more pampering, a drawing for a luxurious weekend at Mirbeau Spa, Skaneateles, will be held Sunday; a limited supply of tickets are available for $10 each. While the nights are about celebrating the good life, the daytime is a showcase for classical carriage driving. New this year is an Antique Carriage Turnout class, featuring carriages made before 1940, set for Sunday following the lunch break. The Pleasure Drive, a five mile cross-country class, also will take place on Sunday morning. Spectators may watch from the Lorenzo grounds or from various points along the way, including the water crossing near Burlingame Road. Two spectator favorites are also returning this year: “The timed obstacle classes are fun to watch to see competitors quickly negotiate obstacles or sets of cones without disturbing them,” Buckhout said. “The carriage dog class (Saturday just before the lunch break) is always a popular class for spectators to watch.” Please “like” the Lorenzo Driving Competition on Facebook to keep up to date on the show. Volunteers are always needed — no horse experience necessary — to help with all aspects of the show. Contact Liz Martin at 607-345-1379 if you’re interested in becoming part of the show team.

Symphoria — formerly called the Syracuse Symphony— will perform a free concert on the front lawn of Lorenzo July 11.

This July, for the first time in three years, Symphoria — formerly called the Syracuse Symphony— will return to the front lawn of Lorenzo to offer a free summer concert that will feature a combination of well-known classical, patriotic and film music. The concert is still in the planning stages, and the configuration of the orchestra that will play will depend on the amount of funds that Symphoria can raise between now and the July 11 concert date. “We are very excited to be coming back to Cazenovia,” said Catherine Underhill, Symphoria managing director. “We are aiming to have the full symphony orchestra there; that’s the goal. If not, we will modify program to fit — it could be a chamber orchestra, or it could be an ensemble. But we’ll be coming no matter what.” The summer Symphoria concert will bring back a former musical tradition at Lorenzo that occurred for 21 years. The Syracuse Symphony previously played free concerts every summer at Lorenzo from 1989 to 2010. The annual event, which necessitated significant fundraising to bring to fruition, would include a patron dinner under a tent on the lawn prior to the concert; during the show, attendees were welcome to bring blankets and chairs, picnics and wine and enjoy the show. The symphony went defunct in 2010, and there has been no summer concert at Lorenzo since 2011, when a brass quintet — former members of the symphony — played. This year’s concert will take place Friday, July 11, with a patron tent again offered before the concert, which is tentatively scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. An alternative venue will be designated in case of rain. “The symphony concert was always a signature event for Lorenzo, so we’re very excited they will be coming back this year,” said Lorenzo site director Barbara Bartlett. “There’s nothing more majestic than experiencing the concert on the front lawn with the sunset on the lake and the stars rising over the mansion.” The Friends of Lorenzo always have made an annual allocation to the concert on the lawn event, and this year already have allocated $1,000 as its contribution to the Symphoria concert. Symphoria is currently undertaking fundraising for the concert, and has sent out letters to individuals, businesses and organizations in the Cazenovia community. “We have engaged some community members who have committed to idea to help make this happen,” Underhill said. “We are trying to raise a significant sum, so any and all contributions are appreciated.” See Symphoria, page 22
