CElebrating Black History Month CNY Jazz to present duo in cabaret
Following the sellout success of last year’s event, CNY Jazz brings Jackiem Joyner back for a return engagement in a double bill with the soulful singer-songwriter Selina Albright to celebrate Black History Month. The gala wil lbe held on Sunday, Feb. 19, at Drumlins and hosted by Pascale’s. Groundbreaking local broadcaster Jackie Robinson will be present to receive this year’s “Pioneer Public Service” award. Doors open at 4 p.m., showtime is at 5 p.m. Joyner is one of the most distinguished musical alumni that Syracuse’s urban neighborhoods have created. A Fowler High School grad, he is a two-time ACT-SO winner who finished his education as an emancipated student, taken in by his band director, the late Lou Adams, who showed the young Jackiem the ropes of public performance in his local dance band. Albright is a seasoned world traveler who has sung or recorded with many artists including her father,
legendary saxophonist Gerald Albright. A legacy who grew up surrounded by the biggest names in the music industry, she has become a star in her own right. She has been appearing at selected engagements with Joyner for over a year. “Jackiem wants to give back so much to youth, and to his home town,” according to Larry Luttinger, organizer of the CNY Jazz event. “I’m extremely thankful for the long and distinguished list of corporate and academic supporters of his residency here. We always leverage our artists’ presence in Syracuse to create learning enrichment opportunities for local student. Jackiem always answers the call. There’s no one who pays it forward like him.” Veteran local news anchor and talk show host Jackie Robinson will receive the 2017 “Pioneer Public Servant” award at the event. At WSTM, Jackie broke ground as Syracuse’s first female African-American anchor. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door or $10 at the door with Student ID. There will be food stations and a cash bar. For tickets call 479-JAZZ (5299) or visit cnyjazz.org.

Syracuse Auto Expo returns Thursday through Sunday The connected car is the latest buzzword as more vehicles get integrated into our phones, computers and our daily lives. However, experiencing a new car smell, the feel of getting into the vehicle of your dreams or finding perfect leg room is something that can only be experienced in “actual reality” at Syracuse Auto Expo at the Oncenter, Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 16-19. The 109th Auto Expo features hundreds of vehicles spread out through two buildings and four floors totaling 135,000 square feet, and you can experience it all without ever having to step outside into Syracuse’s cold temperatures. Returning for a second year, the Toyota Drive Center is ready to hand you the keys and let you experience their most popular vehicles. Syracuse Auto Expo licensed drivers can get behind the wheel of some of the

On Saturday afternoon there will be two musical acts plus wine tastings from some of the area’s most creative businesses. First up 1-4:30 p.m. “Just Joe” will get your feet tapping with their soulful take on music from the 1970s and 1980s. From 5-8 p.m. “Brickyard Road,” CNY’s premiere modern country will be on stage along with Syracuse’s New Hit Country station 92.1. WOLF. ‘Animal Farm’ staged in Homer
‘Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others’ By Russ Tarby When British satirist George Orwell wrote his famous allegory “Animal Farm” in 1944, he was specifically parodying Russian Communism. Over the years, however, his long-lived parable clearly targets totalitarianism anywhere. “Animal Farm” is a fable with
a sting. As World War II drew to a bloody close, the threat of Communism led to the decades-long Cold War. But Orwell, the farsighted British author of “1984,” exposed the Russian experiment for what it really was; an idealist’s dream, converted by realists into a nightmare. A stage adaptation of “Animal Farm” will be performed this weekend and next by Center Players, the community theater group at the Center for the Arts in Homer, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17, 18, 24 and
25. Ticket prices range from $8 to $12; (607) 749-4900; Center4Art. org. Opening on a note of triumph for the farm animals which have emancipated themselves from the cruel mastery of their human owner, the play mounts to a climax in which the other animals – horses, hens, cows, sheep, donkeys and dogs – discover themselves now subject to the rule of even more ruthless autocrats: the cunning pigs. As the animals drive away the drunken farmer, they adopt the
Seven Commandments of Animalism, the most important of which is, “All animals are equal.” Along the way, Orwell coined at least one immortal phrase: “Everyone is equal, but some are more equal than others.” Intermingling humor and drama, “Animal Farm” will leave audiences shaken by the tragedy that happened in a mythical barnyard far away...but could well happen in our own backyard. Featuring a cast of regional actors, the play is directed by Ty Marshal, the executive director of
the Center for the Arts who previously cofounded the inventive Syracuse theater troupe, Rarely Done Productions. “While Orwell’s novel traditionally explores the Russian revolution and the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union,” Marshal said, “the themes in the play are hauntingly reflective of many of today’s modern events.” The Manchester Guardian called Orwell‘s story “a delightfully humorous and caustic satire on the rule of the many by the few.”
Proposal to offer rebate program for renewable heating and cooling technology Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently announced a $15 million proposal to accelerate the use of renewable heating and cooling technologies in New York to stimulate the clean energy economy. The new policy framework released by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority includes a proposed two-year, $15million program to provide rebates for the installation of ground-source heat pumps. This plan will support the state’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in New York 40 percent by 2030 from 1990 levels. “New York has made great strides to combat climate change by supporting the use of new technologies and growing our clean energy economy,” Cuomo said. “We will continue to make green investments that will encourage the use of clean, affordable energy to reduce our carbon footprint and support sustainable communities
throughout the state.” The proposed $15 million rebate program would provide about $6,000 for a typical residential consumer for the installation of a ground-source heat pump. This technology has tremendous potential to provide New Yorkers with a heating and cooling system that is energy efficient and reliable. However, it is not yet cost-competitive with conventional technologies so providing rebates will help stimulate market growth. In addition to the rebate, the framework identifies a range of options for the next few years to lower costs, reduce barriers and grow the market, including: ✓ Community-based outreach, education and bulk procurements. ✓ Integrating renewable heating and cooling in new housing developments and campuses, which can be more economical-
ly efficient and lower cost due to the scale of the projects. ✓ Developing a unified and streamlined permitting process. ✓ Reducing project development risks by providing support for feasibility and engineering studies. ✓ Introducing renewable heating and cooling technology into existing trade and distribution channels. ✓ Advancing new business models and financing innovations that can mitigate high upfront costs by spreading them over time. The framework also explores methods to implement renewable heating and cooling mandates for public buildings, new construction, and renovation. Several barriers currently stand in the way of widespread market adoption of renewable heating and cooling technologies.
These include higher upfront costs than conventional technologies, cost-effectiveness challenges, inadequate access to lowcost investment capital, limited customer awareness and confidence in the technologies, and a range of supply chain barriers to growth. In addition, heating and cooling equipment is typically only replaced toward the end of its useful life — about 15-20 years — so the opportunity to switch to renewable energy is limited. NYSERDA will accept written comments on the policy framework through close of business on March 10. It will also conduct a webinar at 10 a.m. on March 2. Parties interested in submitting comments on the framework or participating in the webinar, should contact NYSERDA at renewableheatingandcooling@nyserda. ny.gov.
McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center receives over $40k from sports auction The McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center recently received $42,900 as the result of the 12th Annual Charity Sports Auction organized by the Sport Management (SPM) Club at Syracuse University. During the SU men’s basketball game on Dec. 10, supporters placed bids on hundreds of items, including sport memorabilia, electronics and tickets to major sporting events. In conjunction with the live event, Steiner Sports also hosted an online auction, which showcased a number of premium items up for bid.
“As a result of months of hard work on behalf of nearly 100 Syracuse University students, we’ve attained our second highest total in the 12-year history of this event,” said Kate Veley, SPM club co-advisor. “It wouldn’t have been possible without the many products and services generously donated by the Syracuse community, and later bid on by thousands of SU fans. Our thanks to everyone who through their gifts, have allowed us to perpetuate this event in support of the community our students call home.”
“McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center is so proud of the Sport Management Club students for the amazing job they did with their charity auction,” said McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Linda Cleary. “We were honored to be selected as the beneficiary of the charity auction and be able to be a part of it. Congratulations to the students on a job well done! Thank you for helping us put children on a path to healing.” The SPM Club is a student-run orga-
nization in the Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics’ Sport Management Department. Since its founding in 2005, the Club has now raised over $360,000 for local charities. The McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Center is dedicated to ending child abuse through prevention, intervention, and education. In 2016, the Center provided free services to nearly 700 child victims and their families.

summer needs a home
Crossword Janice Carroll
By Donna Newman Are you ready for “Summer?” This pretty kitty originally came to the shelter as a stray. She gets along well with other cats, she’s very affectionate and she’s a staff and volunteer favorite. She’s small and very beautiful, and she has a stump for a tail! She loves to be held and cuddled, and she’ll purr in contentment in your arms. Take Summer home and it’ll be “Summer” all year long! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479 ext. 0.

Leonardo da Vinci exhibit opens at the MOST New exhibit features 16 models of his machines
The Milton J. Rubenstein Museum of Science & Technology opened a new permanent exhibit that examines the genius of Leonardo da Vinci. The exhibit, called “da Vinci: Artist. Engineer. Scientist. Thinker.” last Saturday, which was National Inventor’s Day. Da Vinci was the quintessential Renaissance man, simultaneously pursuing painting, sculpting, experimenting, and inventing. Famous for creating “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper,” he also drew detailed sketches of ingenious machines that were centuries ahead of their time. The exhibit features 16 models of da Vinci’s machines, including his flying machine, parachute, printing press, odometer, and hydraulic screw. Some, like his flying machine, would never work. But others, such as his odometer, introduced a concept for measuring distance traveled that today’s automobile odometers still use. The exhibit also gives a nod to da Vinci’s art with a space for visitors to draw their own masterpieces as well as his unique style of note taking. Da Vinci was left-handed and found it easier to write from right to left, so he wrote in mirror script. The new exhibit is located in the MOST’s large Horowitz Traveling Exhibit Area and is free with general admission. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. For more information, including prices and parking visit most.org.

White’s Farm Supply recognized with Kubota Elite Award of Excellence Kubota Tractor Corporation recently honored White’s Farm Supply Inc., located in Canastota, Lowville and Waterville, with Kubota’s Elite Award of Excellence, the company’s most prestigious dealership certification and designation. The certification program was created by Kubota’s senior leadership team in conjunction with its National Dealer Advisory Board to recognize dealers around the country that are providing customers with the “ultimate Kubota experience” from top quality equipment, to sales and financing, customer satisfaction and best in class service. “Whether it is landscapers, contractors or large property owners, today’s
customers expect equipment dealers to be top-notch, full-service partners. Kubota’s Award of Excellence program recognizes dealers that are already there, meeting and exceeding customers’ expectations,” said Todd Stucke, senior vice president, sales, marketing and product support for Kubota. “Simply put, they are our very best, and they’ve set the bar high. For that, we thank and applaud them.” Unique to Kubota’s Award of Excellence program is its designation criteria. The advisory board and Kubota worked together to narrow down the criteria to 17 core elements that are the absolute most critical for longevity, segment growth and overall business success. These 17
elements fall into five categories: customer experience, financial operations, sales and marketing , building brand value and service. There are two certification levels within the program: premier and elite. In order to be recognized with a Kubota Premier Award of Excellence a dealership must meet all requirements and achieve at least an 80 percent compliance percentage within the five categories as listed above. In addition, to achieve the top “elite” status level dealers must be a premier certified
dealer and achieve a total fiscal sales requirement. “This is the second year of Kubota’s Award of Excellence program and it is already setting a high standard that will pave the way for sustained growth and market segment leadership,” Ray Villarreal, Kubota director of dealer development adds. “We have built a strong reputation for top quality on the manufacturing level and this award recognizes that White’s Farm Supply Inc. is delivering on the Kubota promise before, during and after the sale.”
Don’t delay your tax refund – file file accurately to ensure prompt review, processing
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance today reminded New York taxpayers of the importance of correctly filing their tax return. An accurately filed return, using provable information, is the only way to ensure timely processing and the speedy issuance of any refund taxpayers may be due. “Filing errors or falsified information could cause the return to be pulled from the flow for more scrutiny, delaying any
potential refund,” said Acting Commissioner Nonie Manion. “We want taxpayers to receive all the credits and deductions they deserve, including the Earned Income Tax Credit or Child and Dependent Care Credit, but it’s crucial that they have the supporting documents to prove their eligibility if asked.” Taxpayers may receive a letter from the Tax Department asking for documentation to support a specific credit claim on
their return, but that doesn’t mean they did anything wrong. It’s one more step the Tax Department takes to ensure accurate refunds go to those who are entitled. Respond to any tax department correspondence as soon as possible to avoid delays. The easiest and fastest way to respond is online through the respond to department notice service. In 2016, the Tax Department set aside nearly 382,000 returns for additional re-
view, preventing $554 million in suspicious refund claims from being issued. Taxpayers who suspect that an individual or business is committing tax fraud can confidentially report it online or by phone at 518-457-0578. The information is kept confidential. The tax department takes illegal activity seriously by promptly reviewing each complaint, and taking corrective action when appropriate.

Join the Arbor Day foundation in February, receive 10 free trees
Joining the Arbor Day Foundation is an ideal way to get in the mood for spring planting. Anyone who joins the Foundation in February 2017 will receive 10 free Colorado blue spruce trees or 10 free redbud trees to plant when the weather turns warm. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. “These trees will help beautify your home for many years to come,” said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees will also add to the
proud heritage of your state’s existing Tree City USA communities.” The Tree City USA program has supported community forestry throughout the country for the past 40 years. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The six- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge.
Members also receive a subscription to the Foundation’s colorful bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which contains information about planting and care. To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Colorado Blue Spruce Trees Or Ten Free Eastern Redbud Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410, by February 28, 2017, or visit arborday.org/february.

Celebrating National Wear Red Day Central New Yorkers help raise awareness of cardiovascular disease
Central New York recently celebrated National Wear Red Day today to help raise awareness and funds to fight the number one killer of women – cardiovascular disease. Hundreds of Syracuse-area businesses, community groups, hospitals, towns, and schools wore red on Feb. 3 to help spread the message that heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. In Syracuse, representatives from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) joined with the City of Syracuse to celebrate National Wear Red Day. AHA/ASA advisory board president Dr. Michael Fischi, cardiologist with SJH Cardiology Associates, shared important risk factors and symptoms of a heart attack. Former Go Red For Women Chairwoman Anne Messenger talked
about the impact of the Go Red For Women campaign to educate women about their greatest health threat. Mayor Stephanie Miner proclaimed Friday, Feb. 3, as National Wear Red Day in Syracuse. Sixteen buildings and landmarks around the Syracuse lit up in red or displayed red decorations to help spread this important message in honor of National Wear Red Day. Those buildings included: Clinton Square Ice Rink, Crouse Hospital, CXTec and TERACAI, KeyBank, Loretto, National Grid, Onondaga Community College, Onondaga Tower, POMCO (James Street and Ausman buildings,) St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center (Prospect Avenue and James Street locations,) Syracuse University, Hall of Languages and Hendrick’s Chapel and VA Hospital.
