egendary folk/rock duo Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman have spent a lifetime making music together. With four plus decades as staples of progressive FM radio, major record deals and non-stop touring, they continue to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar and soaring two-part harmonies. Aztec Two Step will be performing as part of The Folkus Project at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 3, at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 East Genesee St., Syrac u s e . Admission is $20. Advance tickets and more information can be found at folkus.org. The story of Aztec Two-Step is intertwined with the history of folk/rock music in America. Originating from a chance meeting in 1971, they took their name from a poem by beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and with four plus decades as staples of progressive
FM radio, major record deals and non-stop touring, Rex and Neal continue to impress audiences with intelligent songwriting, dazzling acoustic lead guitar and soaring two-part harmonies. Their first four albums helped
usher the music of the 1960s into the 1970s and beyond, leaving an indelible mark on the musical genre. As their recording career continued, so did the critical acclaim. In 1986, their album “Living in America” was named in Billboard’s year-end critic’s poll. It also received the New York Music Award for the Best Folk Album. Recording and touring non-stop since the early 1970s, Rex and Neal have accumulated 40plus years of
awards, accolades and TV and radio appearances that include the David Letterman Show, World Café Live and the King Biscuit Flour Hour, and have graced countless stages including those of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. They released their first live album, “Highway Signs” in 1996 in celebration of their 25th anniversary. In 1999 they were the subjects of the documentary, “No Hit Wonder,” which was aired on several PBS stations across America. The Folkus Project is a nonprofit organization that fosters and promotes traditional, contemporary, and multicultural folk music in Syracuse and Central New York. Cnyspca pet of the week
Meet Loki
Crossword
Amelia Beamish
By Donna Newman Loki is very sweet, but he’s not “low-key!” He’s only a year old and is a big puppy who’s looking for love. Loki came to the shelter when his family had a change in lifestyle and couldn’t keep him. Loki’s a little timid and is something of a ladies’ man; he can be uneasy around some men, but once he gets comfortable, he’s a sweetheart. Loki loves having his lower back scratched and his belly rubbed, and he loves the snow and being outdoors. He rides nicely in the car and enjoys treats - especially hamburgers! He’s very young and still has a lot to learn, but he’s very smart, he’s food-motivated, and he’s willing to learn and eager to please – a great combination! He’s energetic and would do great in a home with kids 12 and up. Once you meet him, you’ll go “loco” over Loki! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca. org or call 315-454-4479.

The High Kings come to Syracuse March 11
The High Kings will appear at 8 p.m. March 11 at the Downtown Marriott Hotel, 100 E Onondaga St, Syracuse. The members of The High Kings – Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden – each had a wealth of history in the music business behind them. The heyday of ballad groups such as The Clancy Brothers and The Dubliners was a distant memory for generations of music fans and The High Kings decided to take up the baton and continue a tradition that brings Irish music to thousands of fans worldwide. To say that The High Kings are charting a new course for
Irish Folk music – equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful – is an understatement. They are, essentially, marking out a new and bright era for it, aiming to bring a broad demographic along for the journey. The High Kings will tour the US in support of “Grace & Glory,” their new album, starting on March 3 in Texas and ending in New York City on March 19. For full tour information and tickets go to thehighkings.com/tour-dates/

The High Kings – The Facts
The High Kings sold 11,000
tickets on their Irish tour in December 2015 / January 2016 leading to an extra 11 shows being added in April 2016 due to popular demand. The High Kings sold out 10 of their 12 dates in their most recent tour of the USA in March 2016. They return in July 2016 for a further 6 weeks of festival headline appearances and their own club and theatre headline shows. The High Kings walk on song at every live show is ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ by Thin Lizzy. The new album features a cover version of the classic, which was released 40 years ago on April 17th, 1976. The High Kings performed
for President Barack Obama in The White House on St. Patrick’s Day, 2012. The band also performed for outgoing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Martin E Dempsey, at The Pentagon in September 2015. The general is a huge fan of the band and joined them onstage for a special performance on the day with ‘The Presidents Own’ United States Marine Band, who is the house band at The White House, for a rousing rendition of many of his favorites from The High Kings songbook. For more information on their upcoming Syracuse performance call (315) 474-2424.

Registration now open for World Canals Conference in Syracuse
Hundreds of from across globe expected as celebration of Erie Canal Bicentennial begins The New York State Canal Corporation recently announced that registration has opened for the 2017 World Canals Conference, which will be held this fall in Syracuse as the state marks the 200th anniversary of construction for the Erie Canal. Held annually, the World Canals Conference brings together hundreds of canal experts, enthusiasts and historians to discuss the latest developments, innovations and strategies tied to canals and other inland waterways. The conference was last held in the U.S. seven years ago, in Rochester. “The timing for having the conference in New York couldn’t be better,” said Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “It takes on special meaning as we mark the Canal’s bicentennial and how its building transformed the nation into an economic superpower.” The Canal Corporation is hosting the conference, which will run from Sept. 24-28 at the Syracuse Marriott Downtown, along with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and Visit Syracuse. “New York is proud to host this prestigious conference at a time when we will pay tribute to one of America’s iconic waterways, the Erie Canal,” said Gil C. Quiniones, president and CEO of the New York Power Au-
thority, which runs the Canal Corporation as a subsidiary. “Conference-goers will not only get to experience the Canal as well as many of the great attractions Central New York has to offer.” The Canal Corporation is planning a series of events statewide to commemorate the start of construction of the Erie Canal, which occurred on July 4, 1817 in Rome. It was completed eight years later. The Erie Canal is part of a 524-mile canal system, which also includes the Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego and Champlain canals. The system was recently designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service, which places it among the premier historic sites in the U.S. “The recent National Historic Landmark designation for the NYS Canal System, upcoming bicentennial celebrations, and the World Canals Conference in Syracuse make 2017 a momentous year for the canal,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “We look forward to sharing our world-class heritage and exchanging ideas and innovations with multi-national delegates at the conference in September.” The canal system remains a link for com-
mercial and recreation vessels to travel between the Great Lakes and Atlantic Ocean. In addition, more than 1.5 million people annually use the trails along the canals for a variety of recreational activities, including jogging, biking, hiking and cross-country skiing. As part of his 2017 State of the State message, Governor Cuomo proposed
completing unfinished portions of the Erie Canalway Trail and link it to the Hudson River Valley Greenway to create a 750-mile Empire Trail ranging from New York City to Canada that would be the nation’s largest multi-use trail system. For more on information on the conference or to register, go to wcc2017syracuse.com/.

Champions of Learning recognized
CNY ATD recognized eleven Central New York organizations as “Champions of Learning” for showing commitment to workforce development by recognizing and celebrating Employee Learning during 2016. To increase awareness about the strategic value of learning in organizations, the Association for Talent Development (ATD), the world’s largest association dedicated to those who develop talent in organizations, has declared that “Workforce Development is Everyone’s Business.” Celebrating Employee Learning is an opportunity for organizations to demonstrate the value of employee learning and the important connection between learning and achieving organizational results. ATD research shows that organizations continue to invest in growing the knowledge and skills of their workforce. “Increasingly, business leaders realize that the most important asset in our knowledge economy is talent, and a skilled workforce is the key
to realizing results.” says Tony Bingham, ATD President and CEO. CNY ATD and organizations and individuals throughout Central New York highlighted their commitment to developing the knowledge, skills and abilities of employees while celebrating Employee Learning during 2016 with various activities showcasing learning and development.
