vent registration is now open for the 2017 Canal Clean Sweep. The NYS Canal Corporation and Parks & Trails New York once again requests Central New Yorkers’ participation in Canal Clean Sweep, the annual “spring cleaning” for New York’s Canal and Canalway Trail system. For the past 11 years, participation from supporters like has allowed Canal Clean Sweep to make a great impact for this treasured community resource. This year’s event will take place Friday-Sunday, April 21-23, Earth Day weekend. Besides being a great way to celebrate Earth Day, Clean Sweep will help kick-off the 193rd consecutive navigation season on the New York State Canal System, and the first year of the Erie Canal Bicentennial celebration. PTNY is asking organizers to register their events now so that the organization can post them to its Event Finder Map in order for volunteer recruitment to commence. Some cleanup event organizers may already have a group of volunteers in mind, but by posting the event a whole new set of volunteers will know about Canal Clean Sweep. If the event will be open to the public, interested volunteers will be able to join directly through the Event

Orpheus reimagined

Molly Venter and Goodnight Moonshine to perform Feb. 17

Word games enliven ‘Eurydice,’ opening Friday By Russ Tarby Back in 2003, the year before she turned 40, Illinois-born playwright Sarah Ruhl wrote a play in honor of her father, Patrick, who died of cancer in 1994. Her story was based on the Greek myth of Orpheus who tried to bring his wife, Eurydice, back from the dead with his enchanting music. Ruhl said she wrote “Eurydice” as “a way to have a few more conversations” with her dad who was an accomplished and enthusiastic wordsmith. The play – which opens at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at CNY Playhouse at Shoppingtown DeWitt – explores the use and understanding of language, an interest which Ruhl shared with her late father. From the time the playwright was 5 years old, Patrick took his daughters every Saturday to the Walker Brothers Original Pancake House for breakfast, and taught them a new word, along with its derivation. The language lesson and some of Patrick’s words – ‘ostracize,’ ‘peripatetic,’ ‘defunct’ – are memorialized in “Eurydice,” which retells the Orpheus myth from his wife’s point of view, in which the dead father, reunited with his daughter, tries to re-teach her lost vocabulary. Ruhl’s finished script came complete with talking stones and a Lord of the Underworld who rides a red tricycle. In keeping with the play’s Greek origins, the stones serve as a kind of Greek chorus, commenting on the action and warning the characters, without actually intervening in any of the events. The play explores relationships, love and communication. The CNY Playhouse production is directed by Lizz Allers and stars Alyssa Ashley Otoski-Keim in the title role, Derek Powell as Orpheus, Robert Searle as Father, Jeremiah Thompson as a Nasty Interesting Man, and Kathy Egloff, Christa Wirth and Emilie Pitts as Big Stone, Loud Stone and Little Stone, respectively. The show’s producer is Naomi Sorrwar-Randall. “Eurydice” will be staged at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10 and Saturday, Feb. 11, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12. The run continues at 8 p.m. Feb. 16, 17 and 18, at CNY Playhouse, located near the Macy’s entrance at on the second level of Shoppingtown Mall. Tickets cost $15 on Thursday and Sunday, $17 on Friday and Saturday; cnyplayhouse.org; 885-8960.

Molly Venter and Goodnight Moonshine will perform as part of the Folkus Project on Feb. 17 in Syracuse.

W

hen you first hear Goodnight Moonshine it brings a wave of nostalgia, conjuring teenage heartache - then perhaps a similar sensation to falling deeply in

love. As the music fades you’re left grappling with what it is to stay in love with something both beautiful and flawed. Courageous unveiling and depth of experience make the collaboration between married couple Molly Venter and Eben Pariser addictively captivating.

Molly Venter and Goodnight Moonshine will be performing as part of The Folkus Project at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. Admission is $15. Advance tickets and more information can be found at folkus.org. Goodnight Moonshine is Molly Venter’s latest musical project, a collaboration with her husband Eben Pariser. The group tours as a trio with Adam Chilenski on upright bass.

Concert to benefit children in Haiti

Elevating Christian Ministries is hosting a concert on Feb. 17 at the SRC arena. Featured will be Elevation Worship, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward feeding children in Haiti. Elevation Worship, the music team of the 25,000-member Elevation Church in Charlotte, NC, will be headlining the concert. Elevation Worship will be joined by Christian rock band Audio Adrenaline and D-Will. The goal of the concert is to raise awareness and generate support for Elevating Christian Ministries and their projects in Haiti. The organization is currently feeding 2,500 children a day with nutritious whole-wheat bread that is made with bread ovens the Camillerri’s have built in communities in Haiti. Their goal is to feed 10,000 children a day through support from donors and sustainable empowerment with the communities they are supporting. For more information, to buy tickets, or to volunteer, visit elevatinghaiti.com.

A great assist The American Red Cross has joined forces with the Harlem Globetrotters as its official charity partner through the team’s Great Assist initiative to help people in Western and Central New York prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters big and small. The Harlem Globetrotters will feature the Red Cross at more than 300 games throughout the basketball season including a game on Friday, Feb. 10 at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. For more than 90 years, the Harlem Globetrotters have been a leader in fun and wholesome family entertainment, and committed to being Ambassadors of Goodwill across the world. The Globetrotters’ Great Assist initiative was launched in October 2015. As part of a two-year partnership, the Red Cross will engage the Harlem Globetrotters nationally and locally in all aspects of its mission. During the first year, the team will join the Red Cross, along with local fire departments and other community partners, as

Globetrotters partner to bring help and hope to families

the organization works to install its one millionth smoke alarm by October 2017 to help Americans stay safer from home fires. The Red Cross installed 4,461 smoke alarms across Western and Central New York last year. “We’re honored to join forces with the Harlem Globetrotters in through our disaster response efforts and much more,” said Rosie Taravella, Western and Central New York Region chief executive officer. “The fun and interactive way the team engages with the community will help to build greater awareness around our mission and the critical need to help people at risk for and impacted by disasters every day.” In 2016, the Red Cross responded to 1,397 home fires and other disaster in Western and Central New York, making it a devastating year for thousands of families. In fact, Red Cross volunteers respond to a disaster an average of nearly four times a day across the region. For more visit Redcross.org/HarlemGlobetrotters or Harlemglobetrotters.com.

Syracuse native Martin Sexton to perform Feb. 18 at Auburn Public Theater

Martin Sexton will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at Auburn Public Theater. Opening for Sexton will be Brothers McCann. A native of Syracuse and the tenth of 12 children, Martin Sexton grew up in the 1980s. Uninterested in the music of the

day, he fueled his dreams with the timeless sounds of classic rock ‘n’ roll. Regardless of his reputation as a musician’s musician, Sexton can’t keep Hollywood away. His songs can be heard in many feature films and television including NBC’s Scrubs, Parenthood, and Show-

time’s hit series Brotherhood. Opener: Brothers McCann creates dynamic palettes of sound, weaving sweeping three-part harmonies over rustic reinventions of folk-rock. Mike, Pat, and Erik nurture the heart of their New England musical upbringing with three unique songwriting

styles on rotating display. The raw simplicity of acoustic guitars, keyboard and vocals welcomes the eager, patient listener to invest in their melodies and experience an honest, live performance. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door.

‘both ends of the rainbow’ Schweinfurth exhibit to feature more than 1,000 local artists Each year, the Schweinfurth spends more than two full weeks installing their annual “Both Ends of the Rainbow” exhibit, featuring artwork by the oldest and youngest in our community. “This exhibit is one of the most exciting and well attended as it features so many local students and senior artists, and such colorful artwork,” said SchweinfurthProgram Director Deirdre Aureden. “It’s also the most challenging of all our exhibits to install due to the sheer number of pieces and the physical intensity of installing work from floor to ceiling.” On exhibit at the same time is student artwork in the “Three Lakes Sampler,” organized by the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Talented and Gifted Committee . The exhibits run through March 5, with a special reception for seniors participating in “Both Ends of the Rainbow” from 2 to 4 p.m.

on Thursday, Feb. 9. Both Ends of the Rainbow includes more than 1,000 pieces of artwork by students in pre-school through 12th grade, and seniors in Cayuga County and the surrounding region. This annual community exhibit features a wide range of artwork, from drawings and paintings to clay sculptures. Skaneateles Central School students are among those participating in this year’s exhibit. Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES Three Lakes Sampler features artwork from the area’s three Finger Lakes that encompass the BOCES component school district; Cayuga, Skaneateles and Owasco lakes. The Schweinfurth is located at 205 Genesee St., Auburn. Admission for “Both Ends of the Rainbow” is free. Members, 12 and under are free. For more information call 255-1553 or visit myartcenter.org.

Cnyspca pet of the week

Logan needs a home

By Donna Newman Logan is another word for love! It’s hard to believe that Logan came to the shelter as a stray. He’s an extremely smart, handsome, and affectionate boy who adores people. He “sits” very well and takes treats nicely, and he’s polite around his food, bones, and toys. Logan is young, active and curious, and he would be a great addition to an active family with kids seven and up. And best of all - he loves to cuddle! Logan is a very sweet dog and a volunteer favorite. Come meet Logan for yourself and see what a special guy he is. For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315454-4479 ext.0.
