Help with ‘the list’ Each year, as we approach the holiday season, stores begin to fill up with the trimmings and trapping of the season — bows, bells and baubles to decorate the home and hearth. This overwhelming selection of home décor and furnishings is no doubt meant to ensure that your family’s celebration is filled with the warmth, glitz and whimsy that comes along with the birth of Christ and a visit from Santa. The stores also fill with the best and brightest gifts for all who are on your shopping list — in ages ranging from one month to, let’s say, 1, 212 months of age. There are bibs that tout “Baby’s first Christmas” and shirts that boast “No. 1 Grandpa.” One thing I’ve noticed about my shopping list is the way it has changed over the years.

The children’s gifts have downsized — not in price, mind you, but dimensions. While once I would have purchased a play kitchen, complete with working sink and light-up refrigerator, I now am looking at video games no larger than a matchbook. I find that I am having to actually do research about what is new and hot when it comes to tech gifts, toys and even fashion for my daughter. (I long for the days when she would willingly wear outfits by Baby Lulu in various shades of pink.) The downturn in the economy felt in the last couple of years has caused many consumers, I among them, to spend more time evaluating how they spend. It is with this in mind that I offer you, my

There are some people who get the ultimate rush by waking up early and waiting in line for some amazing doorbuster deals at the stores. ticipated shopping events for shoppers to score momentous deals, it has also proven a recipe for disaster. Stampeding masses of eager shoppers has become all too common on Black Friday through the years. Coupled with anticipation of impending sales and the sheer volume of shoppers waiting outside of stores, mob mentality often prevails. It’s survival of the fittest as some shoppers push, shove and run inside to nab the must-have products on sale. In 2008, a sales clerk was trampled to death by a crowd of 2,000 people who knocked the man to the ground at a Wal-Mart store in Valley Stream, N.Y. Later the same day, two people were shot dead at a Toys ‘R’ Us store in Southern California after an argument. Many store employees have tales of picking up trampled people who have been run over at various retailers on Black Friday. Although “Black Friday refers to a store’s profit margin and their ability to be “in the black when tallying end-of-year sales, the moniker

does seem to have an ominous feel to it. “Black Friday seems to conjure images of something bad happening. When unruly mobs race into stores, something bad may just happen. Last year, Dr. David Michaels, the Assistant Secretary for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, was quoted as saying, “Crowd-related injuries during special retail sales and promotional events have increased during recent years. Many of these incidents can be prevented by adopting a crowd management plan. Just what is a crowd-management plan? OSHA has developed a guide for retailers to help avoid accidents and mayhem. The National Retail Federation also issued guidelines for similar promotional events that draw crowds. Contingency plans for larger-than-expected crowds should be put into place, as should thorough communication plans. Some stores have implemented their own policies, including requiring wrist bands to control the amount of people in the store at any

fun fact:

The term “Black Friday originated in 1966 in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving.

given time. Other stores have formed lines in separate areas to avoid crowds at the front of the stores. Individuals shopping can also do their part. While Black Friday shopping has become a tradition for many, oftentimes better deals can be had at different points in the holiday season. Some argue that shopping on Thanksgiving Day yields better sales and that those doorbusters are only tactics to draw shoppers into the store for other products that don’t have the same “wow factor. Keep in mind that many online retailers also offer Black Friday sales that are comparable and shoppers don’t have to wait outside in the cold to get them.

The Syracuse Violin Academy is a teaching studio for the violin and viola and offers talented young students the opportunity to play popular favorites before a live audience. Syracuse Violin Academy was established two years ago, and Joshua Diesti, a Julliard trained violinist, takes pride in his teaching. The academy, located at 300 W. Genesee St. in Syracuse, is more than just a music studio. It is a very large, professional space that gives students the feeling of performing and a sense of being open with their sound. The students also have access to a recording system, which is an amazing tool, allowing students to hear themselves and discuss how to make their performance better. Students can also make CDs for their friends and family. Diesti said he gets excited when he hears that someone is considering playing the violin or viola. “There are so many fantastic benefits to playing an instrument and especially the violin/viola,” he said. “The discipline that can be gained is legendary. There are studies showing that it helps spatial intelligence that can help with everything from solving complex math problems to organizing a suitcase. It definitely helps children to learn that there are sometimes more than one right answer to a particular problem. That in turn can develop creativity. It gives a sense of respect for hard work, and gives you a great feeling of accomplishment. Confidence, and being able to control your anxieties are another benefit. I could just go on and on.” See Syracuse Violin Academy on page 7

The parent of one of his students agreed that there are many benefits to learning an instrument, particularly at the Syracuse Violin Academy. “We had been searching for a violin teacher for our daughter Sarah ever since we moved to Manlius from Manhattan,” Alec Rienfeld said. “We tried so hard to find a teacher that was enjoyable for Sarah to work with, but at the same time helped her progress. We tried four different local teachers and none of them worked. Finally, we called Sarah’s old teacher and she recommended Joshua. By the second lesson everything was wonderful. Joshua gives his all in every lesson, and his love of music is contagious.” Diesti said teaching is rewarding for him as well. “I love watching my students progress.” Diesti said. “I love helping to bring out the talent of others and seeing the results of their hard work.” His students also are given the chance to perform in the community, in places such as libraries, nursing homes and even the Candlelight series that is performed in from of the MOST. “I always try to give them opportunities to perform in front of others if they want to. Students have the opportunity to receive recognition from not only the school, but also the entire CNY community,” he said. He stressed that it is fine if a student does not want to perform in front of an audience. “People have different goals when it comes to learning to play.” A goal of Diesti’s is to gather musicians into a chamber or string

Maybe it will happen sometime in the near future.” Joshua Diesti has performed nationally and internationally for many years and has worked with famous musicians such as Cho-Liang Lin, Dorothy DeLay and Sally Thomas. Holiday health and beauty tips

Battle the bulge this holiday season begin, or under the assumption that there just isn’t any time. Here are a few simple tips to help you stay true to your personal fitness goals and avoid the holiday weight gain that seems to creep up on you every season.

By Jennifer Nastasi, Champions Fitness Center

The holidays are fast approaching, and if you’re anything like me you will soon have a list of parties and events to attend. If you’re not mindful, when the season has concluded, the party indulgences, coupled with a lack of time for exercise, will result in a few unwanted pounds. A few pounds may not seem like much, but once gained, well, they are rarely lost. Seven out of 10 adults aren’t getting the recommended amount of physical activity they need for optimal health? Many of us are perfectly capable of exercising, but are fearful of potential injury, unsure where to

peanut butter, a handful of almonds, or whole wheat crackers with hummus spread.

Be aware

Be aware of what you are eating. It’s easy to get carried away in conversation and eat too much.

Don’t deprive or stuff yourself

Munching on a green salad while everyone else is feasting on turkey and stuffing could cause you to binge later in the day. Don’t overeat either.

Prepare healthier dishes

Eat a small meal

Create a plan

Make a few small changes such as mashing potatoes with low-fat milk, adding less butter to the food, using more spices, and serving more salads and veggies.

Before you leave your house have a small healthy snack such as apple slices with natural

Business is alive and well at Innovations Salon & Spa beauty and wellness needs of the residents of Central New York and surrounding areas. Upon opening in this location Innovations staff has grown from 27 to 40, and boasts having some of the most trend-setting salon and spa services as well as professional products to support them. Innovations is one of just 126 salons nationwide to be certified and promote the “Ouidad” carving and slicing method of hair designing to control unruly, naturally curly locks, resulting in silky smooth curls like nature intended. Looking for a flawless complexion? Innovations was the first in Liverpool to carry

Jennifer Richardson, owner of Innovations transformed the unsightly brick house into what is now a well-known, elegantly decorated premier Salon & Spa that caters to the

This line of 100 percent pure mineral makeup does wonders for any skin type and is only in select salons and spas throughout the country, as well as bareMineral boutique locations, some higher end department stores, Sephora and QVC. Most recently, Innovations has taken on the “Surface” line of hair care products, not only for the safety and well being of their guests and staff, but for the safety and concern for the environment. Surface is a family owned company that proudly presents their Vegan structure infused with natural corn and sugar starches rather than dangerous plastics for hold, Cationic Vegan proteins for repair and Babassu,Aloe and Flaxseed Oil for moisture. Here we grow again. Some say beauty is only skin deep. Innovations is proud to unveil their brand new Notch Skin and Body center this December. Surface Remedies will make its debut Sunday, Dec. 11, at Innovations’ third annual Holiday Market. At the Holiday Market guests can enjoy a marketplace with distinct

Besser’s Whistlestop...CNY’s largest discount model and train store Trains are alive and well at Besser’s Whistlestop. An American tradition is the toy train running around the Christmas tree or little brighteyed children staring in amazement at a new train layout on a table that Santa Claus had somehow found time to build while the kids were snugly tucked away in their beds. There was nothing like coming down the stairs early Christmas morning to see an electric train and even maybe two running around or through a brightly lighted village whistle blowing and bell clanging. This scene never ceases to dazzle young and old alike. Everyone from toddlers to senior citizens are frequent visitors to the story which draws people from long distances to Besser’s

Whistlestop miniature train store in Baldwinsville. There are trains of all shapes, sizes and gauges to suit everyone’s taste from the steam trains of yesteryear to the most modern replicas of today’s real trains. The story also displays models from the tiny “N” gauge right up through the more popular HO, S, O 027 and G gauges in addition to a “Thomas the Tank Engine” display. The first time this years the story is carrying slot car sets. Besser’s is Central New York’s largest discount model and train store. It is operated by Kevin and Mark Besser at 2731 Brundage Road, near the corner of Sixty Road, just north of the village. There are about 3,000 square feet devoted to miniature trains and another 481 feed of operating layouts.

Mark Besser stands in front of Besser’s Whistlestop, the train store that looks like a real train station. Centerpiece of the store is an HO scale model of the New York Central’s Buffalo Terminal which Kevin created, including the dozen of tracks that once served it. The model is 32 feet by 13 feet. Items not seen in the store can be special ordered. Besser’s

has numerous catalogues for shoppers to look at and the store carries model trains made by most manufacturers. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Call 638-6448 for further information.

Come visit the world’s handmade marketplace

CNY Etsy is a group of Etsy shop sellers all residing in the Central New York area. The area ranges as far North as Saratoga Springs down to Binghampton, Syracuse, Utica and all around the CNY area. Shop Local, online.

11078

www.Etsy.com is the “World’s” handmade marketplace. Started in 2005, in New York, it is a safe way to shop online using credit cards and PayPal.

Etsy’s beginning

Etsy was conceived by Rob Kalin in early 2005. A painter, carpenter and photographer, Rob found there was no viable marketplace to exhibit and sell his creations online, as other e-commerce sites had become too inundated with overstock electronics and broken appliances. Ever industrious, he, along with Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik, designed the site, wrote the code, assembled the servers, spliced the cables, and launched Etsy on June 18, 2005, after only three sleepless months.

11065

The mission of Etsy is to empower people to change the way the global economy works. Etsy sees a world in which verysmall businesses have much more sway in shaping the economy, local living economies are thriving everywhere, and people value authorship and provenance as much as price and convenience. We are bringing heart to commerce and making the world more fair, more sustainable, and more fun. We are headquartered in DUMBO, Brooklyn, and also have offices in Hudson, NY, San Francisco, CA, and Berlin, Germany.

hire a personal trainer to work with you once or twice a week to help you stay motivated.

Increase your daily activity

Make a special effort to take the stairs, go for walks on your lunch break, and use that bicycle or treadmill you have at home.

Make a commitment to yourself

Write down and quantify your goals and write out the steps you’d be willing to take to make them a reality.

Say no to leftovers

There’s something for everyone at...

Exercise can be hard to fit in to your busy schedule around the holiday season, but it’s essential that you do at least a little bit of physical activity. Most everyone begins the holiday season with good intentions, but good intentions don’t always last. Just know that you don’t have to be like the average American who starts the New Year off sporting a muffin top and an extra ten pounds. Cook healthy foods, make healthful food choices, practice self control, hold yourself accountable, stay active, and avoid those dreadful fattening leftovers. Take action now and devise a plan so that when the shopping, work, kids, and parties inundate your life, you’ll be prepared.
