HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

From the editor

I’m not a Grinch, just a mom facing the holidays I’m certainly not trying to sound like a Grinch this holiday season, but the fact that it is fast approaching is tying my stomach in knots. When I think back to Christmastime when I was little, I realize I don’t have a lot of memories about the season from before the age of 10 or so. Oh, sure, there are the vague recollections of being in my pajamas as I race to the tree and, of course, memories of playing with the toys that could be found beneath its branches. But the memories of sharing a family meal and helping to put tinsel and other decorations on our family tree are most sharp after I turned 10. Knowing that, I feel a certain pressure to make sure that this holiday, now that my children are 10 and 11, be all that they are dreaming of. At this age, I know they, too, will have poignant memories of this year’s festivities. Every year, I have been the one climbing up and down the ladder to hang the icicle lights on our porch roof. I have waited

Wing Momsense

in line at Black Friday sales at 5 a.m. (and even earlier) in snow and rain. I have planned and wrapped and addressed cards and baked cookies. When do I get a break? Certainly not now, with my children’s faces lighting up at the mention of the peanut butter blossom cookies that will fill their tummies or the fact that they want our lights outside to be even more spectacular than last year. Now that they can express concisely what it is that tops their wish list of Christmas presents, I find myself longing for the simplicity of buying what I thought they might like when they were mere toddlers and couldn’t tell me themselves. The thought of fighting crowds for that special bargain has begun to lose its allure. Is the thrill of the hunt gone for this avid shopper? Or is it that the feeling of panic at not having yet made up my to-do list is causing me to lose focus? Grinch, am I? Bah humbug! I’m not a Grinch, or a Scrooge, for that matter. I’m just a working mother, facing another season of planning the holidays, which are over in the blink of an eye, but live on in memories forever. As a mother, my greatest gifts are my children, happy and healthy, and spending these important days with my husband as we enjoy the holidays and look forward to the new year. In writing this I realize that the dread I feel can be easily fought by thinking of what is most important this holiday season – family, faith and the warmth that is brought by bringing together the people who are most dear to me under one roof.

great (and easy) hostess gifts Candles Spa gifts

There’s almost nothing simpler to set the mood than a little candlelight. Tie some candles with ribbon and place in a basket with some pretty candleholders and festive long matches to add a bit of whimsy.

Wine Keepsakes

The gift of relaxation is priceless in this day and age. A gift card to a local spa is a no-brainer, or packing together some bath salts, a loofah and towels can fit the bill for a “spa at home.”

The old standard of giving wine as a hostess gift is still a great way to show your appreciation. Pair it with some cheese, crackers and jams and your hostess can either put out the gift at the party or save it to savor later.

This is more of an openended idea - achieved with a personal touch. A frame with a photo of the two of you or a favorite memory, an ornament personalized with the family’s name or date of the event or even monogrammed kitchen towels can make any hostess feel appreciated.

Why candy canes?

November 2013

A history of the confection associated with Christmas choirmaster there had sticks of candy bent into the shape of a shepherd’s crook and passed them out to children who attended the ceremonies. This became a popular tradition, and eventually the practice of passing out the sugar canes at living creche ceremonies spread throughout Europe. The use of candy canes on Christmas trees made its way to America by the 1800s, however during this time they were still

pure white. They are represented this way on Christmas cards made before 1900, and it is not until the early

20th century that they appear with their familiar red stripes. Source: candycanefacts.com

Uses for leftover candy canes

Listed are 33 uses for leftover candy canes to be found at candyblog. net. Here are just a few: Use them to stir your hot cocoa, tea, coffee or even to stir your cocktail.; crush them lightly to make minty sprinkles for ice cream or cupcakes, and use them in recipes.
