HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE
2015

The holiday shopping season is upon us, and so it’s time for me to gear up and form a game plan for the unofficial kickoff – Black Friday. I know there seems to be a public outcry about stores being open on Thanksgiving, but I personally have no problem with that notion. I might even go myself, although it would probably take a great bargain to get me off the couch after a side-splitting dinner. From what I gather there will even be morning specials, which would actually be easier for me to do, since I don’t typically cook on Thanksgiving, am notoriously an early riser (and my husband and kids like to sleep in) and am always game for a good discount. Thanksgiving shopping controversy aside, I know I will be among those shopping on Black Friday, most likely from late Thursday night on. Armed with my list and surrounded by my posse, I’ll hit some of the big box stores and then wind up at the mall. Later in the day, my husband and son will most likely meet my daughter and I and our other shopping buddies for lunch and some reconnaissance. I’ll have my own list for my husband, who will probably break away at that point in an effort to get some of his own gift shopping out of the way. Later that evening, we will head for the village of Fayetteville tree lighting– a family tradition that is fun, but usually chilly, with horse drawn wagon rides through streets lit with luminaries and hot bowls of chili, cider and donuts in the warmth of the fire hall. Music will play, the tree will be lit and Saint Nick himself will come on a fire truck for photos and conversation with the kiddies. We always look forward to Thanksgiving dinner, but the day after is also something we anticipate, a way to extend the family togetherness that begins on Thursday around the dinner table and ends when we walk back to the warmth of the car and head home after celebrating with neighbors at a fun community event.

making your community a more successful and more welcoming to place in which to live. It’s all about neighbors supporting neighbors and adding that personal touch to the holiday season.

Shopping advice
Make that list, and check it twice
W
By Jennifer Wing
hen you think of holiday shopping, do you find that your pulse starts to race, and not in a good way? Do you worry that you will end up buying something just for the sake of getting the shopping trip over with, and not because it is “perfect” for the person on your list?
There are a lot of ways to avoid pitfalls during the holiday season - and the answer is not simply to buy online. There are a lot of problems that go along with using your computer to do your shopping, from slow delivery times to incorrect sizing. In this day and age, it seems that shopping at the neighborhood store is becoming more of an option for many consumers. And why not? You can go and see the merchandise available, get personalized care and even advice for the shopper who is unsure of what is “hip” or state-of-the-art. Before the trip you should plan out what you are buying and for whom. The amount of time and effort you take in creating a list is directly proportionate to the length of time and The list, next page

continued from previous page
aggravation you face when actually shopping. A good jumping-off point is to make a list of the people for whom you will be buying gifts. Then, if you have received any hints or suggestions from these people or others close to them, put those down on the list. For the people that have no suggestions next to their names, write down a favorite hobby, music genre or other form of entertainment. This can help you come up with some ideas for gifts. For instance, if the person on your list is an avid traveler, you might then purchase them a piece of luggage, if you plan to spend a few bucks, or, on the less expensive side, a book on traveling Europe or some other destination you know they’ve always wanted to visit. Once you’ve filled in the blanks, look to see what gifts might come from the same store. If you are planning to buy a DVD for one person on your list and a pair of headphones for another, an electronics store could fulfill those purchase needs. If you want to get someone a cozy scarf and someone else a pair of sterling silver earrings, a local boutique such as Isabella in Cazenovia might be perfect for those purchases. Once you’ve gone through your list, you may find that there are some people for whom you were unable to find the perfect gift. In fact, there may be quite a few on your list. In that case, a gift certificate can be your saving grace. Many people would, in fact, rather get a gift certificate to somewhere such as the Syracuse Soap Factory, where they can pick out their own fragrance and type of body care than receive something picked out for them. If you decide to go with a gift certificate, but are worried that it is not personal enough, never fear. There are many places, such as Olive on Brooklea, located in Fayetteville and Syracuse, that have gifts in the $10-$20 range, that you know will get use, and therefore be appreciated. Another nice gift to give to someone is a baked treat. Making homemade cookies or mini loaves (see one recipe, page 22) not only gets you in the holiday mood, but affords you a chance to give gifts to people to show your appreciation and share your seaonal spirit,
such as your mailman, neighbor or children’s teacher. The gift is that much more meaningful because you made it. If you include your children when baking, it also spreads the holiday cheer to them and gives them a sense of being included in the gifting process. Whatever you decide when shopping, it’s always a nice feeling when you buy something for people you care about, especially if you have put thought into that purchase.
