refresh your decor Tips for cutting costs when redecorating By Tresa Erickson You’ve been bitten by the decorating bug, and you’re ready to redecorate the major living areas in your home. You don’t have a lot of money to spare, so you’re going to have to cut costs where you can. Not to worry. With some thought and careful shopping, you can create beautiful rooms on a small budget. When shopping, you want to put the bulk of your budget toward any large furniture pieces you need. Don’t cut corners when it comes to these. Sure, you may save some money now, but you will have to shell out more later when the furniture breaks and you have to replace it. When possible, buy multifunctional furniture. Instead of a sectional, buy a sofa bed that you can use for extra guests. Should you need some smaller furniture pieces, consider buying them used and redoing them. Once you have the furniture all set, study your living areas carefully and look for inexpensive fixes. Instead of replacing your carpet, consider redoing the hardwood floors underneath. If you need to hire a professional for the job but can’t afford it, consider painting the
floors until you can save enough money to have them refinished. Instead of papering your walls, paint them to look like linen using a faux finish. Instead of replacing your cabinets, have them refaced or paint them yourself. Add some new hardware, and they will be good as new. One of the easiest fixes involves the use of paint and trim. Both are relatively inexpensive, and you can use them to transform almost anything from drab white walls to plain side tables. Add drama to your living room walls by wrapping a chair rail around the middle and painting the upper half beige and the bottom half chocolate brown. Dress up your plain side tables with some molding and light blue paint, and set them against the freshly painted brown walls for a pop of color. Along with paint and trim, fabric is another inexpensive fix. Don’t have any art? Stretch a piece of interesting fabric across a canvas, staple it into place and hang it up for instant artwork. Need new pillows? Make some out of some fabric and batting, or sew slipcovers for the ones you already have. Drapes ragged at the bottom? Cut off the damaged ends and sew on new bands of fabric. When shopping for fabric for your rooms, start at the remnant table. Chances are you will find exactly what you need for all of your sewing projects at a fraction of the cost. Combine various patterns, styles and textures for a unique look. When it comes to accessories, think outside of the box and look for bargains. Don’t be afraid to use the unexpected. Go ahead and bring in that old garden gate and hang it on the wall. Take advantage of sales, clearance aisles and bargain bins. Shop at flea markets and thrift stores, and remember, you can redo almost anything you find. See a chandelier you like that’s tarnished? Go over it with some tarnish remover or give it a quick dash of spray paint. Add some new shades, and voila, you’ve got a new light at a low cost. Decorating on a shoestring budget is not hard. It just takes some clever thinking and some fine-tuned shopping. Good luck and have fun.

he annual Parade of Homes will be open From June 4 through 19 at Crane Brook, just off of South Eagle Village Road in the town of Manlius. With eight professionally decorated and landscaped luxury homes, not only will attendees see the latest in building and design trends - they will also view the ultimate in home dĂŠcor, appliances, lighting, smart home technology and outdoor living. By Melinda Myers Grow a beautiful flower garden with minimal care by investing a bit of time at the start of the season to reduce on-going care. Always match flowers to the growing conditions and the care you are willing to provide. Low maintenance plants need minimal or no deadheading and staking. This means you’ll be growing good-looking plants with little effort on your part. And if the plants are suited to the growing conditions and resistant to common pests you’ll be doing less work managing insect and disease problems. Further reduce your workload by selecting self cleaning or free flowering annuals and perennials and those bred for long bloom and compact growth. You’ll enjoy more colorful flowers with less pruning and grooming. Ageratum, angelonia, calibrochoa and many of the newer petunia cultivars are just a few of

the annuals that do not need regular deadheading for continual bloom. Include perennials like willow amsonia, bugbane, Solomon seal, turtlehead and sedum autumn joy for lower maintenance and big results. Prepare the soil and provide proper fertilization before planting. Work several inches of compost or other organic matter into the top 8 to 12 inches of soil to improve drainage and water holding ability. Incorporate a low nitrogen organic fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com) at the same time. The slow release formulation provides needed nutrients throughout most if not all of the season. Plus, it promotes slow steady growth that won’t interfere with flowering, is less susceptible to pests and is more drought tolerant. Properly space the plants, making sure they have sufficient room to reach their full size. Overcrowding means you will be thinning or dividing plants more often or battling disease problems instead of enjoying the full beauty the plants provide. Consider removing flowers on annuals at planting. This allows plants to focus energy on establishing roots instead of flowers. Can’t bear to do this? Then remove the flowers on every other plant or every other row. Then a

week or two later remove the flowers on the remaining plants. You will soon be rewarded with full compact plants that will produce more flowers throughout the season. Pinch back long and leggy transplants. Use a hard pinch to remove the tip and several inches of stem. Use your pruners or fingers to remove stems just above a set of leaves. The remaining plant will still look good while you wait for new leaves and stems to grow and produce new blooms. Encourage branching on single stemmed plants with a soft pinch. Remove just the uppermost portion of the stem where the leaves and tip are starting to develop. Soon you will have a well branched plant and more blossoms. Improve plant posture and reduce the need for staking with early season pruning. Keep mums and asters compact by pinching them back to six inches throughout June to encourage compact growth. Eliminate floppy growth and the need for staking on late bloomers like Boltonia, Autumn Joy sedum, Russian sage and Heliopsis Revive catmint and perennial salvia that flop open in the center with pruning. Cut flopping plants back halfway once or twice a
season as needed. And don’t forget to mulch. Covering the soil surface with an inch or two of shredded leaves, evergreen needles/pine straw or other organic material will conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil as they decompose. Always water new plantings often enough to keep the top few inches of soil moist. Once established water thoroughly and only as needed. This encourages drought tolerant roots, so you’ll need to do less watering in the future. With proper planning, plant selection and soil preparation you can keep your ongoing care to a minimum. ow that it has finally started to warm up, many New Yorkers are enjoying their barbecues and other outdoor amenities. And while gas grills, portable fire pits, and patio heaters make outdoor spaces comfortable and desirable places to gather… it’s important that they are used properly. The New York Propane Gas Association helps consumers keep grilling season safe with an interactive online module on grilling from the Propane Education & Research Council at www.propanesafety.com/ grilling-safety. Consumers learn proper grilling procedures using propane, in English or Spanish, and it takes less than 10 minutes to complete! The grilling area should be designated as a “No Play Zone,” keeping kids and pets away from the equipment. To help kids learn about gas grill safety, the Propane Education and Research Council has launched the fun interactive website propanekids.com. Some key safety tips include:
Ventilation
Always keep the lid open when lighting
your grill. Don’t close it until you are sure the grill is lit. Keep the grill in a well-ventilated outdoor area, at least ten feet away from the house— and at least three feet away from trees and shrubs. Never cover the bottom of the grill with foil - it can restrict air circulation. Always use and store propane cylinders outdoors in an upright position. After filling or exchanging a cylinder, take it home immediately. While transporting the cylinder, keep your vehicle ventilated and the valve closed or capped. Do not leave the cylinder in your vehicle.
Firing up the grill safely
Never use matches or lighters to check for leaks. And never use starter fluid with propane grills. Do not smoke while handling a propane cylinder, and keep all flammable materials away from the grill. If the grill does not ignite within ten seconds, turn off the gas, keep the lid open and wait five minutes before trying again. If the igniter fails to light the grill after two or three tries, turn off the gas and replace the
igniter according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Regularly check the tubes that lead into the burner for blockage from insects or food grease. Never attempt to repair, clean or clear blockages on a hot grill.
General safety tips
Always have one person in charge of the fire at all times. Never leave a hot grill unattended. Never attempt to repair the tank valve or the appliance yourself. See a propane gas dealer or a qualified appliance repair person. Be sure to locate your model number and the manufacturer’s consumer inquiry phone number and write them on the front page of your manual. If you smell gas and you are able to, safely turn off the cylinder vale, turning it to the right (clockwise). Immediately leave the area and call 911 or your local fire department.
