he Syracuse Crunch weren’t singing “Auld Lang Syne” on New Year’s Eve. Instead, they belted out bar after bar of “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” North Division rivals the St. John’s IceCaps made their first appearance of the season at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena to face off against the Crunch who stood in first place in the American Hockey League’s North Division,
a single point ahead of the second-place Caps. It seemed the IceCaps had something to prove here on Saturday, Dec. 31. Just 14 seconds after the initial faceoff, St. John’s pesky winger Bobby Farnham got into it at center ice with Syracuse forward Jeremy Morin soon joined by Crunch captain Luke Witkowski and IceCaps defenseman Joel Hanley. Morin and Hanley were slapped with roughing penalties while Farnham was penalized for two minutes for

Syracuse Crunch retains first place after an unruly New Year’s Eve victory unsportsmanlike conduct. Crunch first-year head coach Benoit Groulx applauded Witkowski for taking charge. “I’m proud of our captain and our team, the way we stood up for ourselves out there,” he said after the game. After quickly shutting down the visitors’ intimidation tactics, the Crunch scored four goals in a mere 2 minutes and 47 seconds in the first period on the way to a hard-fought 7-5 victory. Along the way, harried
referee Alex Garon issued
30 penalties, including seven majors and a game misconduct for IceCaps winger Stephan Matteau. Three bona fide fights were broken up by the linesmen, and an additional half-dozen scrums, including a massive blow-up in front of the Crunch bench, kept the 4,543 fans rising from their seats to better view the swinging fists. While the action was often stopped to accommodate the ongoing parade to and from the penalty boxes, the two teams managed to fire a total of 41 shots on goal, 12 of
which scored. After Syracuse took its four-goal lead in the first, the home team seemed to lose focus. Toward the end of the first period, St. John’s scored three goals in a four-minute period to draw within one. From there, the score remained close until the end. Afterwards, Crunch blueliner Adam Comrie called it a “good, old-fashioned hockey game, lots of grinding.” But the Syracuse squad got set back on its heels, Comrie commented, after St. John’s scored its three quickies late
in the first. The homeboys held on, despite the IceCaps antagonism, as Crunch wingers Jeremy Morin and Cory Conacher each netted two goals, and Syracuse went 3-for-4 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Crunch netminder Adam Wilcox earned his 13th victory by turning aside 11-of16 shots, and goalie Charlie Lindgren stopped 19 for the IceCaps. For the second time this season, the Crunch scored a season-high seven goals.

Bring birds for winter beauty, entertainment By Melinda Myers
Brighten your winter days by inviting birds into your landscape. Their beauty and motion help enliven the garden and lighten your spirit. Not only do they provide entertainment, but also an opportunity for all ages to stay involved with nature year-round. Increase the number of visitors to your yard by including all the essentials these winged visitors need; food, shelter and water. Plants are the easiest way to bring birds into your landscape. These natural feeders provide seasonal food and shelter for the birds. Take a walk through your yard and look for trees, shrubs and perennials that provide food and evergreens that provide year-round shelter. Plan on adding a few of their favorites that provide food and shelter and seasonal beauty you can enjoy. In the meantime, add a few feeders. This is a great way to increase the number and diversity of birds visiting your garden. Place feeders in a quiet, sheltered location where you can easily watch these visitors come and go. Avoid placing feeders too close to plants that provide easy places for squirrels to jump onto the feeders and cats to hide while hunting for a meal. Select feeders to attract the type of birds you want to bring into the garden. Tube feeders with metal ports keep the seeds fairly clean and dry and are somewhat squirrel resistant. Feeders with short perches attract small birds like chickadees, titmice, and finches. Those with the perches above the feeding port are suitable for birds like goldfinches, chickadees and pine siskins that can
feed upside down. Thistle feeders and socks have extra small openings designed to hold the small seeds of thistle. You’ll find small songbirds like finches feeding at these. Suet feeders hold blocks of high energy food made of animal fat filled with seeds and berries. They attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, jays and starlings. Platform feeders attract the greatest variety of birds, but give squirrels easy access to the seed. Plus, the open environment subjects the seeds to spoilage from damp weather and droppings from feeding birds. Enclosed hopper or house feeders are attractive to most birds, but once again the seed can be exposed to the weather and spoil. Be sure to thoroughly clean the feeders monthly to avoid the spread of disease. Cover droppings and spoiled seed on the ground with a fresh layer of mulch. Add additional feeding stations by dressing up your evergreens with bird-friendly ornaments. You can purchase seed coated ornaments or make your own. Roll an evergreen cone in peanut butter or suet and coat with birdseed. Coat a stale bagel with peanut butter and seed. Hang these on the tree with colorful yarn. Add a few orange slices and strings of cranberries for added food and color. And once the holidays are over move a discarded holiday tree into your bird feeding station. It provides shelter from cold winter winds and makes another place to hang a few edible ornaments. Keep the birds coming by adding a birdbath for a constant supply of water for drinking and bathing. Shallow birdbaths with slop-

ing sides and a maximum depth of two inches in the center provide easy access for all birds. Keep the water flowing despite cold temperatures with the help of an immersion heater designed for birdbaths or purchase a birdbath with a built-in thermostatically controlled heater. And once you create a bird-friendly environment you’ll be enjoying them yearround. Listen for their songs, watch them raise their young and thank them for helping keep garden pests under control. Crouse Medical Practice to participate in national initiative preventing heart attacks, strokes Crouse Medical Practice (CMP) has been selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) as one of 516 awardees in 47 states to help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes among millions of Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries. Affiliated with Crouse Health, CMP is participating in the Million Hearts Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Model program and will work to decrease cardiovascular disease risk by assessing an individual patient’s risk for heart attack or stroke and applying prevention interventions. Heart disease is the leading cause of death and a major contributor to disability in the United States. One in three deaths are caused by heart attacks and strokes, resulting in more than $300 billion of healthcare costs each year. Currently, healthcare practitioners are paid to screen for blood pressure, cholesterol or other risk factors individually. In testing a new approach, healthcare providers participating in the Million
Hearts Cardiovascular Disease Risk Reduction Model’s intervention group will use a data-driven, widely accepted predictive modeling approach. This method generates personalized risk scores and develops specific plans in partnership with patients to reduce the risk of having a heart attack or stroke. Accepted applicants were randomly assigned to either the intervention or control group in accordance with the model’s randomized control design. “Historically, our healthcare system has focused on acute care rather than preventive care,” said Carl Butch, MD, medical director of Crouse Medical Practice. “This initiative will enhance patientcentered care and give practitioners the resources to invest the time and staff to address and manage patients who are at high risk for heart attacks and strokes.” Overall, nearly 20,000 healthcare providers and more than 3.3 million Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries will participate in
the five-year model. Crouse Medical Practice is participating in the intervention group and will work with Medicare fee-for-service patients to determine their ten-year individual risk for a heart attack or stroke. CMP will then work with patients individually to identify the best approach to reducing their risk of having a heart attack or stroke – for example, smoking cessation intervention, blood pressure management, or cholesterol-lowering drugs or aspirin. Each patient will receive a personalized risk modification plan that will target their specific risk factors. Formed in 2010, Crouse Medical Practice is a multispecialty physician practice with multiple locations and more than 120 providers, including primary care physicians, neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroendovascular surgeons and cardiologists. Cnyspca pet of the week
SUDOKU
By Donna Newman Not being wanted is the worst feeling in the world. Just ask Tucker. His family surrendered him to the shelter when they no longer wanted him. Tucker is very sweet but a little timid when he first meets you. He walks nicely on the leash, he’s patient in the bath and he loves people. He has a very sweet, gentle disposition, but because he’s a little shy, he would do best in a home with older kids and adults. All Tucker wants is a family to love and who will love him in return. Come meet Tucker for yourself and see what a special guy he is. For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 454-4479 ext.0.

The event is a panel discussion with a moderator—Roy Gutterman, associate professor and director of the Tully Center for Free Speech in the Newhouse School—and three panelists: Baldwinsville Messenger and Star Review Editor Sarah Hall; Jason Zenor, assistant professor

effects on news consumers at the Eastern Communication Association conference in March. Stromer-Galley recently penned an article for The Conversation titled “Three ways Facebook could reduce fake news without resorting to censorship.”
