A jazz happening!
Sounds of Dixie ring out Sunday at Uriah’s in L’pool
W
By Russ Tarby hen the JazzHappensBand returns “(Back Home Again) in Indiana,” the seven musicians turn a warm homecoming into a hot happening. First, trumpeter Jeff Dovi plays a mournful melody before the entire ensemble kicks in to swing it and wing it. Suddenly, they stop…and Dovi blows the slow head again to truly take it home. No wonder their crowds clap like crazy! This Cortland combo revels in authentic Dixieland dynamics. The swinging septet will perform from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan 22, at Uriah’s, 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57) north of the village of Liverpool; 622-2250, facebook.com/ uriahs2016/. The concert is presented by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse (JASS) which has staged traditional jazz concerts at various venues across Central New York for 45 years. On Jan. 22, JASS will christen a new venue, Uriah’s restaurant on Route 57. Admission costs $12 for JASS members, $15 for others; 652-0547; jasscny.org.
‘Ain’t She Sweet?’
Formed in 2005, the JazzHappensBand features trumpeter Jeff Dovi, trombonist Mike Poole, clarinetist Nick Pauldine, tuba player Jim Overhiser, banjo player Robbert van Renesse, pianist Steve Wilson and drummer David Alexander. Bandleader Jeff Dovi feels fortunate to have found six kindred souls with which to make music. “They all enjoy the same kind of music as I do,” he said. But what about that name, JazzHappens, with spaces between the words deleted? “Trombone player Mike Poole credits me with saying, ‘Jazz isn’t planned….it just happens,’” Dovi explained. “Hence the name of the band, The JazzHappensBand.”
The JazzHappensBand performs from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, at Uriah’s restaurant, on Route 57, in Liverpool, presented by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse.
A lifelong admirer of classic jazzmen such as Al Hirt, Fred “Mickey” Finn, Pete Fountain and The Dukes of Dixieland, Dovi and his musicians carefully cover several of jazz’s earliest hits including “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Copenhagen” and “Tin Roof Blues.”
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the initial recordings by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, and JazzHappens pays tribute with its version of “At the Jazz Band Ball.” The JazzHappensBand’s CD, “Turn Up the Music,”
‘Jazz Band Ball’

features tracks such as “Dinah,” “Ory’s Creole Trombone” and “Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gave to Me.” The disc will be available for sale at the Jan. 22 concert. You can sample the band’s sound at jazzhappensband. com/.
January JazzFest to be held at Mohegan Manor

and a celebrity jam session concludes it at 9 p.m. Co-headliners include the spectacular swing sensation, saxophonist Harry Allen, accompanied by Nancy Kelly and her band; dance your feet off to Brownskin and their hard-hitting R&B; catch Julia
Goodwin, America’s Got Talent finalist and winner of Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook competition, with Edgar Pagan’s GPL; the Swing Kats vocal jazz group; Bob Piorun; Cookie Coogan; Julie Howard; Jeff Stockham’s Jazz Police;
CNY Jazz Alumni Jam; and more. Fine food and drink will be available. Tickets are $25 presale; $30 door; $15 students w/ID. For more information contact info@ cnyjazz.org or call 479-5299.

Experience tattoo competitions in more than 20 categories and more than 100 art-
ists from around the world. The local competition, which has aired on many television programs, including The Learning Channel’s program “Amazing America,” will feature tattooing, body piercing, jewelry and many competitions. Hours are 6 p.m. to midnight Friday,
noon to midnight Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Ramada Convention Center is located at Carrier Circle, 6555 Old Collamer Road, East Syracuse. The Lizardman will return to the Tattoo Expo after 12 years of traveling as

In fact the Henry’s purchased the home of famed cabinet maker “ John Goddard “ in Newport, RI during the early 1960s and restored the circa 1750 structure ... furnishing it with period furniture and decorations (see “Building & Remodeling” Magazine 1978 - issue #105). The Henry’s were buying from estates in Newport and all across New England during “the golden years” of Antiquing! WHAT TREASURES THEY ACQUIRED!! Although they had an eye for mainly American antiques they couldn’t resist any piece of quality! You will find Asian, European and English paintings, Rare Furniture and decorations among the Period American items from this estate. It is truly an ECLECTIC AUCTION…Fine Silver, Estate Jewelry, Textiles, China, Glassware, Primitives, Miniatures, Folk Art, Clocks, a Fancy Barometer, Maps, Persian Carpets and more Objects of Virtue are the cement that holds this tremendous sale together!

Resolve to be prepared for disasters in 2017 Red Cross offers tips for keeping you and your family safe
The New Year is here and many are making resolutions about things they want to do in 2017. The American Red Cross asks everyone to add getting prepared for emergencies to their list of resolutions for the coming year. Households need to plan what they would do if an emergency situation occurred,” said Rosie Taravella, American Red Cross, Western and Central New York Region Chief Executive Officer. “All it takes is three easy steps, get a disaster kit ready; develop an emergency plan and be informed about what possible risks you may face where you live.” Families need to plan as to what they should do if a disaster occurs. People can make a difference in your community by knowing what to do when disaster strikes. It’s just a few short steps away: 1. Get a kit. If you’ve ever fumbled to find a flashlight during a blackout, you know what it feels like to be unprepared. Use a downloadable checklist available on redcross.org to make it easy to get your emergency preparedness kit ready. You should include:
3 Three-day supply of non-perishable food and water—one gallon per person, per day for drinking and hygiene purposes 3 Battery-powered or hand crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible) 3 Flashlight and extra batteries 3 First aid kit, medications and medical items 3 Copies of all important documents (proof of address, deed/lease to home, passports, birth certificates, insurance policies) 3 Extra cash 2. Make a plan. Talk with household members about what you would do during emergencies. Plan what to do in case you are separated, and choose two places to meet - one right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency such as a fire, and another outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home or are asked to evacuate. 3 Choose a contact person from out of the area and make sure all household members have this person’s phone number and email address. It may be easier to
call long distance or text if local phone lines are overloaded or out of service. 3 Tell everyone in the household where emergency information and supplies are kept. 3 Practice evacuating your home twice a year. Drive your planned evacuation route and plot alternate routes on a map in case main roads are impassable. 3 Don’t forget your pets. If you must evacuate, make arrangements for your animals. Keep a phone list of “pet friendly” motels/hotels and animal shelters that are along your evacuation routes. 3. Be informed. Know the risks where you live, work, learn and play. If you live or travel often to areas near a fault line, learn how to prepare and what to do during an earthquake. If summer brings to mind not just beaches and picnics but also tropical storms and hurricanes, arm yourself with information about what to do in case one occurs. Remember that emergencies like fires and blackouts can happen anywhere, so everyone should be prepared for them.
Find out how you would receive information from local officials in the event of an emergency. Learn First Aid and CPR/AED so that you have the skills to respond in an emergency before help arrives, especially during a disaster when emergency responders maybe delayed. Visit redcross. org/takeaclass for online and in-class offerings and to register. Download the Red Cross Emergency App to receive emergency alerts and information about what to do in case of emergencies, as well as locations of open Red Cross shelters. It is a single ‘go-to’ source for 14 different types of emergencies and disasters and allows users to notify loved ones who are in an affected area. Download the Monster Guard App so 7- to 11-year-olds will have a free, fun, gaming environment to learn how to prevent emergencies, like home fires, and how to stay safe if severe weather or natural disasters occur. People can download the apps for free in their app stores or at redcross.org/apps.

all within 90 minutes, according to CMP Medical Director Carl Butch, MD. “In adults, the number one cause of non-traumatic blindness is diabetic eye disease,” said Dr. Butch. “We have found that less than 50 percent of our diabetic patients are undergoing annual retinal exams. This high-tech camera allows for early detection of retinal abnormalities, and with early detection 95 percent of vision loss cases can be prevented.”

President of WCNY honored with award
WCNY Public Media President and CEO Robert J. Daino was named the recipient of the 30th annual Rhea Eckel Clark Citizenship Award at the Central York Regional Planning & Development Board’s annual meeting held on Oct. 28. Daino has held these positions at Central New York’s public broadcasting company since 2005. During his tenure, Daino has: 3 Expanded the organization’s viewership and engagement by expanding its programming to 5 digital television channels and 3 digital radio stations, with broadcast signals reaching 19 counties and 1.8 million viewers in Central New York and parts of Canada, reaching a worldwide member audience through web streaming. 3 Moved the company headquarters to Syracuse’s Near Westside, anchoring the rebirth of the area with a remarkable high-tech
restoration of a former brownfield site into a state-of-the-art facility featuring the only LEED® Platinum Certified broadcast center in the world that integrates new technologies throughout its collaborative work spaces, and innovative programs and services that support the local community and provide partnership opportunities with organizations across the region as well as new revenue streams for WCNY. 3 Created the vision and shaped the effort that launched Centralcast LLC, a groundbreaking model for public broadcasting and the first collaboration of its kind within the PBS system. Through a single hub located inside WCNY’s facility, Centralcast delivers content for all public broadcasting stations in New York and New Jersey as well as Philadelphia, Hawaii, Charlotte, Connecticut, Washington State, Utah, Georgia, and many other
stations across the county, reaching nearly 40 percent of the nation’s PBS viewers. 3 Opened an Education Center as part of the company’s new facility that hosts a unique model for experiential learning, the Enterprise America program. Enterprise America provides middle school students an immersive learning experience focused on STEM (science, technology, education and math) skills, entrepreneurship and financial and civic literacy. It’s the first of its kind in New York State and has the potential to reach 700,000 students within a 2-hour radius of Syracuse. 3 Entered a partnership with OCM-BOCES and Onondaga Community College to launch an innovative co-curricular program for high school students. Students who graduate from the twoyear program will earn a Regents diploma with technical certifica-
tions, 18 college credits, and have invaluable practical experience in all aspects of working in a multimedia broadcast environment. 3 Led the way in 2007 to become the only station in the national PBS system to eliminate program-interrupting televised pledge breaks, thus providing viewers with an additional 330 hours of programming each year. Daino also led the effort to leverage the technical, programmatic, and operational opportunities of all nine New York State stations by linking them together through a high-speed fiber optic interconnect. Daino started his professional career at General Electric in Syracuse, where he worked for 13 years before becoming the founder, President and CEO of PROMERGENT and ServeCentral LLC. He has more than 25 years of change/ workflow management and Internet technology experience.
Robert J. Daino He also has developed software and hardware in highly complex integrated electronic systems for the U.S. Navy, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and a multitude of commercial businesses. He holds a bachelor’s of art degree in Computer Science from the State University of New York College at Oswego.

Season celebrated with half-price admission, annual photo contest
E
mbrace winter with a visit to the Rosamond Gifford Zoo! Annual “Snow Leopard Days” means half-price admission during the months of January and February. Adult tickets (ages 19-61) are $4, youth (ages 3-18) are $2 and seniors (ages 62+) are $2.50. The zoo is open year-round, and winter is a wonderful time to visit. Outdoor exhibits feature animals chosen for their ability to adapt to the region’s climate. These are animals “made” for the cold, like snow leopards, red pandas, bison, Amur tigers and red and gray wolves. Prefer warmer temps? Sixty percent of the zoo’s exhibits are indoors, making it a great destination even on cold and snowy days. By Donna Newman Magic came to the shelter with Houdini when their owners could no longer afford to take care of them. Houdini is adopted, but Magic is still waiting for her “FURever” family. Magic is a beautiful rabbit who is looking for a patient family who will take the time to help her learn to trust. If you’re looking for some “bunny” to love, come and meet Magic for yourself and see what a special girl she is! For more information, call 454-4479 ext.0 or visit cnyspca.org.
