Tenor titan By Russ Tarby
No wonder he’s New York City’s Number One tenor saxophonists. Even before he attended kindergarten, Harry Allen was absorbing the sweet sounds of American jazz because his father, Maurice, constantly played records for his young son including performances by tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, a vital member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra. As a 7-year-old, Allen took accordion lessons, started playing clarinet at 11 and switched to saxophone at 12. Now 50 years old, Allen has emerged as the world’s top tenor man specializing on swing and standards. His interpretive approach has its roots in the work of classic saxophonists such as Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Illinois Jacquet and Lester Young. “When I went to college [at Rutgers University], I was the only one who was trying to get a mellow sound on the saxophone,” Allen recalls. His thorough embrace of the Great American Songbook has paid dividends as Allen has recorded more than three dozen CDs and toured the world several times over. Last year Allen released two discs,
“The Candy Men” by Harry Allen’s NY Saxophone Band and “London Date” by the Harry Allen Quartet. The former features familiar tunes such as “After You’ve Gone” and “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?” And the latter’s tracks include two joyous jams on “Indiana” and ““Our Love Is Here to Stay” recorded live at the Watermill Jazz Club. Harry Allen will headline the annual January Jazzfest, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Mohegan Manor, 58 Oswego St., in Baldwinsville. Tickets cost $25 in advance, or $30 at the door; 479-JAZZ; cnyjazz.org. Allen will be accompanied here by pianist Dino Losito, drummer Jimmy Johns and bassist Danny Ziemann. Vocalist Nancy Kelly will also step up to the microphone during Allen’s set. The January Jazzfest kicks off with a jazz brunch at 11 a.m. with music by Bob Piorun and Bob Vanderrhoof. Promising four floors of fun at the multi-level Mohegan Manor, CNY Jazz Central executive director Larry Luttinger has booked plenty of top-flight musicians and singers to perform throughout the day. The R&B band Brownskin plays the second level Green Room from 2:15 to
Swingin’ saxophonist Harry Allen headlines January Jazzfest Sunday at Mohegan Manor
4 p.m., followed by a CNY Jazz Alumni Band. Baldwinsville’s own Julia Goodwin -- America’s Got Talent finalist and winner of Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook competition – will sit in with Grupo Pagan Lite at the firstlevel barroom from 2:15 to 4 p.m. The lower-level Basta Cabaret Lounge will hear from singers Julie Howard at 1 p.m., Cookie Coogan at 2:15 p.m., The Swing Cats at 3:30 p.m. Jeff Stockham’s Jazz Police will close out the festival in the lounge with a celebrity jam from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Cash bar and food stations will be available all day. Headliner Harry Allen performed at the 2015 Northeast Jazz & Wine Festival in downtown Syracuse, also staged by CNY Jazz. One of the strengths of his music is that it appeals to almost everyone. “I think it’s a style that your average person, not a musician, finds listenable and likes,” he said. Syracuse jazz collector John Herr agrees. “Harry’s one of the most lyrical stylists of his generation,” Herr said. “Music teachers who want their students to get a grounding in standards and jazz classics should spread the word about this concert.”

Winona Forest hosts Stone Wall Snowshoe Walk and Race Jan. 28

The Winona Forest Stone Wall Snowshoe Race takes place Saturday, Jan. 28, at Winona Forest Recreation Area in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. Pictured is Richard Shumway of Lacona running in last year’s race.
he Winona Forest Recreation Association kicks off its season of winter events Jan. 28 with the Stone Wall Snowshoe Walk and Race through ths sprawling 9,000-acre state forest in northern Oswego and southern Jefferson counties. “Winona Forest is known for its deep snowfalls and winter wonderland appearance, and the Winona Stone Wall has evolved into one of the Northeast’s premier snowshoe events,” said Matt Westerlund, president of Winona Forest Recreation Association. “Shoers can choose from a 5K citizens distance, where they can race, run or walk with friends, or the 15K championship course.” Westerlund urges those who choose the longer distance to be well-trained, and in excellent snowshoe race condition. “This 15K course is very challenging, and depending on conditions that day, could feel like running an ultra,” he said. Both distances offer a variety of conditions over mixed groomed trail, single track packed, and virgin snow single track courses. Winona contains more than 30 miles of multi-use cross country ski, snowshoe, hiking and biking trails, and almost 40 miles of separate snowmobile and ATV trails. The trails are groomed and maintained by volunteer members of the Winona Forest Recreation Association. “The Stone Wall Classic is one of many events that cele-

All pre-registrants will receive a commemorative 2017 Stone Wall souvenir. Snowshoe loaners can be re-
served by e-mailing race director at snowshoerace@ gmail.com. “Winter conditions are unpredictable,” said Westerlund. “You may encounter deep snow, bitterly cold temperatures, blizzardlike conditions, logs to jump, limbs to duck, wet conditions, water holes, downed trees, steep up and down hills, snowmobilers, skiers, and wild animals. It could be a bright, blue, clear winter day, or it could be something much different. Prepare for anything. Regardless of weather, come to enjoy the day with fellow ‘shoers, in a beautiful forest. “ For more information e-mail snowshoerace@ gmail.com. Canal system designated a National Historic Landmark
As New York state prepares to honor the bicentennial of construction of the Erie Canal in 2017, there is new cause for celebration. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Acting Director Michael T. Reynolds today announced that the NYS Canal System has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The designation places New York’s operating canals among the premier historic sites in the United States. A celebration and media event hosted by Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and Congressman John Katko is planned to announce benefits and impacts for Upstate New York on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 10am at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown (former Hotel Syracuse) in Syracuse. “This recognition from the highest levels of our nation reminds us once again of the essential role New York State and its waterways have played in our country’s development and prominence,” said Bob Radliff, executive director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “This designation recognizes the canals’ significance, raises community pride, invites new investments, and enhances their status for residents and visitors.” The National Historic Landmark designation includes the Erie, Champlain, Oswego and Cayuga-Seneca canals. Direct successors of canals built during the 1820s, these waterways were enlarged to their current dimensions between 1905 and 1918. They remain in service today passing commercial and pleasure vessels between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. Less than 3 percent of the thousands of places currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places are designated National Historic Landmarks. The designation specifically recognizes the canal for its role in shaping the American economy and settlement, as an embodiment of the Progressive
Tug Gov. Cleveland in Lock 9 of the Champlain Canal. Era emphasis on public works, and as a nationally significant work of early 20th century engineering and construction. Its 450 miles of navigation channels, locks, lift bridges, dams, power houses, and maintenance shops together represent a significant, distinctive, and exceptional entity. “As we approach the Barge Canal’s Centennial year in 2018, as well as the observance of the Erie Canal’s Bicentennial period between
2017 and 2025, National Historic Landmark designation of the Barge Canal will be a most deserving step in appropriately honoring the prominent role New York’s Canals have played – and continue to play - in the development of the nation’s economic and cultural heritage,” said Brian U. Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corporation. Much credit for the canal’s historical integrity can be attributed to generations of
National Park Service
state canal workers who have operated and maintained the system for the past 100 years. The ongoing stewardship of lock and bridge operators, bank walkers, and tug and dredge crews, engineers and administrators has preserved this nationally significant resource in remarkable condition. CNY community invited to learn about 40-year bald eagle journey Free event followed by birding walk
The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps is hosting “Restoring the Bald Eagle: A 40-Year Journey,” a presentation by Mike Allen, a retired wildlife technician and biologist involved with the bald eagle program in New York state from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 11. The presentation will be held at Destiny USA Skydeck on the sixth Floor. After the presentation, an Audubon naturalist will lead a birding walk along the Onondaga Creekwalk, a popular Bald Eagle viewing location. Founded in 1976, the New York State Bald Eagle Restoration Project was developed to re-establish a Bald Eagle population in New York state. Over a 13-year period, 198 nestling bald eagles were collected from Alaska and the Midwest states, transported and then released in New York. The bald eagle project accomplished its goal of establishing 10
breeding pairs by 1989. This success story has resulted in more than 250 pairs breeding around New York and two to three dozen regularly spending the winter at Onondaga Lake, a priority Audubon Important Bird Area. Interested community members are asked to RSVP to Montezuma Audubon Center at Montezuma@ audubon.org with the subject line “Onondaga Lake” or call 365-3588 by Feb. 3. The event is hosted by the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps, an expanding organization of community volunteers who are contributing to restoration projects that are creating or improving wildlife habitat in the Onondaga Lake watershed. To learn more about the Corps or participate in future activities, contact montezuma@ audubon.org or call 365-3588.

Tully’s, JDRF CNY aim to ‘Strike Out Diabetes’ Tully’s Good Times Restaurants has teamed up with JDRF Central New York to raise money through the month of February at all Tully’s restaurants in Syracuse, Rochester, Batavia, Buffalo, Vestal and Scranton, PA. Tully’s CNY Syracuse locations are on Erie Boulevard, Syracuse, 7th North Street, Liverpool, Route 11, North Syracuse and West Genesee St, Fairmount. “This is a company-wide effort by us to raise money for the local JDRF - to cure Type 1 Diabetes, said Sam Bregande, from Tully’s Good Times. “This year’s baseball theme, ‘Strike Out Diabetes’ features three ways to raise money for the cause. Every day through February, Tully’s wait staff will be selling blue Tully’s / JDRF wristbands for $1. Every Tuesday, Tully’s will donate 10 percent of the sales from original, Buffalo and Asian
tender dinners and healthy menu entrees. The proceeds will go directly to JDRF Central New York. They will also be accepting donations that may be added to a customer’s bill during their meal. “This is our way of partnering with a great diabetes fighting cause where most of the money goes to local programs. And local is very important to Tully’s, Bregande said, “This is our second year partnership with Tully’s. JDRF CNY Executive Director Tracy Foss agreed. “We think the three strike combination that they have created will be very effective in raising donations, she said. JDRF, the leading diabetes foundation funding Type 1Diabetes research, is working to progressively remove the impact of T1D from people’s lives until there is a world without T1D.

WCNY hires new executive VPP and COO
Chris Geiger will join WCNY Public Media in a newly created role of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer on November 1, 2016. In this position, Geiger will work with President and CEO Robert Daino on a broad-based expansion of the company, developing new revenuegenerating enterprises, expanding program production to the national level, and working toward creating a new, more entrepreneurial model for non-profit public broadcasting. Geiger was formerly the President and CEO of CNY Central WSTM TV. He returns to Syracuse after working as an Executive Consultant to Videa, a division of Cox Media Group in Atlanta GA, and as Vice President and General Manager at FOX Connecticut Media Group-WTIC in Hartford CT. While at CNY Central, Geiger rose through the ranks from Sales Manager to General Manager to President and CEO. The CNY Central brand includes WSTM, an NBC affiliate; WSTQ, a CW affiliate; and through a shared service agreement, with WTVH, a CBS affiliate.
“I am extremely happy to be making this announcement and to have someone as talented as Chris joining our team said Robert Daino. “In the past several years, WCNY has taken bold steps to diversify our revenue streams, making us less dependent on government and soft-money funding while at the same time increasing our ability to serve our members and the community. We want to continue this trajectory and increase our capacity which will ultimately increase the value of this community-owed asset. “As we enter a new phase of growth, it takes strong, experienced, and strategic leadership to drive expansion and lead our successful endeavors such as Enterprise America and 415 Productions as well as to continue the development of a robust national presence for our programs and documentaries. Chris’ combination of media company management, digital platform development, and contract negotiation skills are the perfect fit—plus he brings a keen understanding of our regional market that will allow him to make an immediate, positive
impact to our organization and the communities we serve. Geiger is a native of the Binghamton area, a graduate of the University of Virginia and has spent his entire career in the broadcast television and digital industry. He has extensive knowledge of all aspects of multiple television station management, as well as significant, high level business, communit y, and industry relationships. He lives in Manlius. “What Bob has achieved is nothing less than extraordinary, said Geiger. “WCNY has been transformed from a sleepy public TV station into a model for the Public Broadcasting system, moving from an outdated building with aging technology into its new LEED-platinum certified, state-of-the-art facility that’s an anchor for Syracuse’s Near Westside Initiative. Together, we have set our sights on leveraging even more of WCNY’s strengths, of creating and delivering more content and services and charting new opportunities in the exponentially growing digital media market.
Chris Geiger “Having the opportunity to partner with Bob in driving and leading WCNY to its enormous potential is tremendously exciting. I am delighted to be back in Syracuse and I look forward to working every day with the highly capable staff at WCNY on the next step of the company’s journey.

Registration now open for Syracuse Heart Walk Trivia contest held at kick-off event
In celebration of the American Heart Association’s 2017 Syracuse Heart Walk, volunteers, team coaches, and corporate donors came together recently at the Crowne Plaza in Syracuse for a fun trivia night to kick off this year’s event. The trivia contest taught Heart Walk participants details about the event, fundraising tips and heart and stroke information.
This year’s Inspirational Honorees, Carmella Carroll and Chloe Burian, were introduced. Carmella is a stroke survivor and Chloe is a five-year-old girl living with Marfan syndrome. The Heart Walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 1, at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College. The fundraising goal for this year’s event is $660,000. Registration is now open for the Syracuse Heart Walk; participants and teams can register at syracusehearwalk.org.
This year’s Heart Walk chairman is Kimberly Boynton, CEO of Crouse Health.
“Community health is why I’m proud to be a part of the Syracuse Heart Walk,” Boynton said. “Crouse Health is committed to doing our part to keep our community healthy, including supporting and advancing the goals and mission of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.”

By Donna Newman Striper is an eight-year old beauty who came to the shelter when her family had a change in lifestyle. She is extremely sweet, loves to be petted, meows at first, then purrs like crazy. She even likes having her belly rubbed! The only problem is that she’s so bashful that she’s hides under her blanket and no one can see what a sweetheart she is. She’s a volunteer favorite and a very special kitty. Stop by the shelter and take the time to meet Striper for yourself – you’ll be glad you did! For more information about adoption, call 454-4479 ext.0 and visit cnyspa.org.
