Musical melting pot
The Mike + Ruthy Band combine country twang, Cajun chug, R&B swing and gospel fervor The Mike + Ruthy Band will be performing as part of The Folkus Project at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, at May Memorial Unitarian Universalist Society, 3800 E. Genesee St., Syracuse. He’s a songwriting guitar-slinger with a knack for clawhammer banjo. She’s a fiddler and uke-chanteuse who grew up in the American roots underground, the daughter of Grammy-winning fiddler, Jay Ungar. These two believe in the transformative power of a great live show. They write top-tier songs, tour with their peerless five-piece band (a sound they’ve taken to calling rural rock), and perform for audiences worldwide with a charm and on-stage ease that might make you think they’re your new best friends. When it comes to chemistry this fivepiece band from Woodstock, featuring Mike Merenda and Ruth Ungar from The Mammals, has plenty to spare. The Mike + Ruthy Band sets the indie-folk scene ablaze. Singers and storytellers, poets and parents, Merenda and Ungar tour with their children and band in tow, embodying a down-home approach to Americana. Bouncing between festivals and intimate venues, the troubadours bring harmonydriven fiddle and banjo tunes to more than 100 shows a year. Road-tested material such as the pair’s celebrated recording of Woody Guthrie’s “My New York City” cement Merenda and Ungar’s status as a national treasure. In 2016, Hudson Valley based songwriters Merenda and Ungar enjoyed a high-water mark year buoyed by critical acclaim for their June release, Bright As You Can (Thirty Tigers) and a commitment to touring once

again as a crack five-piece ensemble - reintroducing a high-energy folk rock sound that they helped define in the early 2000’s. Mike + Ruthy are “musicians’ musicians” who have found fans and friends in the Americana world and beyond. As word of their well-loved record spread, the band quickly found themselves sharing bills with
industry luminaries as diverse as The Avett Brothers, Milk Carton Kids, Elephant Revival, Ani DiFranco and The B-52’s, setting the stage for a tremendous 2016 which included invitations to 15 major music festivals across the US and and Europe. Admission is $18. Advance tickets and more information can be found at folkus.

‘Nature as Resource’ art exhibit to open By Gallery Coordinator Karen Jean Smith
Two artists express complimentary visions in the upcoming exhibit at Baltimore Woods Nature Center. From Jan. 6 through Feb. 27, “Nature As Resource”, an exhibit of oil paintings by Marybeth Sorber and raku wall tiles by ceramic artist Peter Valenti will be on display in the Art Gallery of the John A. Weeks Interpretive Center at 4007 Bishop Hill Road, Marcellus. The public is invited to attend the reception from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7. In addition, the show will be available for viewing from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturdays . There is no admission or parking fees and all art work will be for sale. For this exhibit, nature is the resource for both theme and materials. Sorber’s paintings are inspired by her surroundings, including mountaintops, lakes, forests and animals. Valenti’s tile wall pieces are comprised of more intimate depictions, like leaves from trees at Baltimore Woods, that he has pressed into clay and embellished with additional imprints and glazes. “I love painting landscapes,” said Sorber. “In nature, I have
free reign to explore and exaggerate color and shadows. I would love to have people feel like they want to be in the woods or on the mountain where my painting idea originated.” Sorber utilizes oil paint, a material most commonly made with linseed oil, because of the extended drying time and flexibility of color mixing that oil paint provides. She also enjoys the luminous effects that can be created by using glazes (paint diluted with a medium) so that underlying layers of paint can be seen, giving the paintings a richness not otherwise possible. Sorber has lived in Central New York most of her life and currently lives on Onondaga Hill. Her artistic training includes numerous college-level courses, workshops, classes, and study with local artists. She has exhibited in several venues in central New York including Crouse Physician’s Office Building, libraries, the Tech Garden and shows sponsored by her guild, the Onondaga Art Guild. She has also been a loyal supporter of the Members’ Exhibit at Baltimore Woods. “I see my tile work as representing a moment in time.” said Valenti. “The leaf impressions are like fossils that will survive beyond the life of the plant.” As for his process: “The Japanese
method of raku gives intriguing effects that are rich in texture and color. I use an Americanized version that involves heating glazed pieces until they are red hot, removing them from the heat, exposing them briefly to the air and placing them in a combustion chamber where carbon is absorbed into the clay to make it black and the glazes are chemically altered, often resulting in metallic effects.” Originally an education major with a minor in art, Valenti “discovered clay” just prior to graduating. “I felt an immediate affinity for it.” he said. Also a production potter who creates functional pieces, Valenti can be seen at arts and crafts shows around New York State and beyond. He grew up on Long Island but has been a native of central New York for more than 30 years, 29 of which he spent as a ceramics instructor at East Syracuse-Minoa High School. He has also been actively engaged in supporting the arts in central New York over the years through his participation in the Scholastic Arts Committee, Feats of Clay (a community high school event) and the Independent Potters’ Association.

‘One Man, Two Guvnors’ opens Jan. 13
The Central New York Playhouse will present “One Man, Two Guvnors,” which will run for 10 performances from Jan. 13 through 28. Brighton, England. 1963. Change is in the air, and Francis Henshall is looking to make his mark. Fired from a skiffle band and in search of work, he finds himself employed by small-time gangster Roscoe Crabbe, in town to collect a fee from his fiancee’s gangster father. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother, herself in love with Stanley Stubbers (her brother’s killer) who, in turn, becomes our hero’s other ‘guvnor’. Fighting a mounting sense of confusion, Francis goes out of his way to serve both bosses. But with the distractions of a pneumatic book keeper, a self-important actor and select members of the criminal fraternity (not to mention his own mammoth appetite) to contend with, how long can he keep them apart? Richard Bean’s hilarious comedy received five star reviews from

CNYSPCA PET OF THE WEEK
sampson needs a home
S
By Donna Newman
ampson is full of contradictions - he’s strong but sweet, happy but vulnerable, active but mellow and sensitive but curious. He came to the shelter as a stray. He’s a loving, happy boy who will do great in a home with children of any age. Sampson was recently a Canine Ambassador for the CNYSPCA, and he visited dozens of students at a local school. He loved everyone he met, and everyone loved him! Come meet Sampson for yourself and see what a special dog he is. For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 454-4479 ext.0.
