Join bunco babes against breast cancer
S
tupid Dumb Breast Cancer’s Fifth Annual Bunco Babes against Breast Cancer features dice, drinks, food, prizes, boobs and as the participants have come to expect on an annual basis, way too much fun for a weeknight! On Wednesday, March 8, five dozen rambunctious ladies will gather again at Trappers II, 101 North Main St., in Minoa, to raise awareness and funds for those in the Central New York community whose lives have been impacted by cancer. Proceeds from the event will be contributed directly to CancerConnects, a nonprofit organization that provides free programs and services for cancer patients throughout CNY. “Seats fill up quickly, because everyone knows it’s a blast” says SDBC Founder Ann Marie Giannino-Otis. “Much more than just a night out with friends, our 60-player Bunco extravaganza is an opportunity to help the people of our community. You might even get to wear a tiara!” Bunco Babes Against Cancer kicks off with registration and seat assignments at 6:30 p.m. Play begins at 7 p.m. sharp. Giannino-Otis promises amazing prizes for first, second, and third place winners, as well as a grab bag, raffle, and lively cameraderie among new and old friends. In addition to its usual offerings, Trappers II will feature cocktail specials, just for this occasion. “Register early,” she said. “You don’t want to miss this.” A $20 non-refundable fee is required in advance to reserve a place in the festivities.
What is Bunco? According to the website buncogame.com, Bunco is “a game centered around three dice and sets of four players. It is a game of pure luck…played in upbeat and social settings involving a lot of eating, drinking, and talking.” Requiring no real skill (great news for newcomers!), the game “provides a great reason for a group of people to gather and socialize.” Once you’ve played a round or two, the site says, “it becomes easy to understand that it’s the atmosphere, friendships, and chance to have some genuine fun that makes it an enjoyable past-time that demands an encore!” Founded in 2012, Stupid Dumb Breast Cancer is Giannino-Otis’ fierce and unconventional initiative to promote awareness, research, and advocacy, with a focus on the ravages of metastic cancer and the people who fight it. On behalf of SDBC, Ann Marie has been featured in area publications, appeared on TV (including MSNBC’s NewsNation with Tamron Hall), local radio, and Huff Post Live, and she hosts a series of monthly events. Since its inception almost two years ago, SDBC has raised and contributed over $100,000 to a variety of cancer organizations, including Stand Up to Cancer, Duke Hospital, Wilmot Cancer Center, the Upstate Cancer Center, Cancer Connects, Maureen’s Hope Foundation, and Jill’s Wish. Ann Marie currently serves as community manager for Wisdo and social media advisor for Lyfebulb. Syracuse Crunch cling tenuously to first place in AHL North By Russ Tarby With just 22 games to go in the American Hockey League’s 2016-17 season, the Syracuse Crunch maintain a shaky hold on first place in the North Division. Division rivals the Albany Devils, the Toronto Marlies and the St. John’s IceCaps all remain within a few points of first place Syracuse, which has 26 wins, 17 losses five overtime losses and five shoot-out losses. The AHL’s Calder Cup Playoffs will begin a few days after the end of the regular season in mid-April. February has been a cold and inconsistent month for the Crunch and first-year head coach Ben Groulx. In ten games through Feb. 22 – eight of them on the road
– Groulx’s skaters have won four and lost five. It’s not easy to stay sharp on the road in a bus league like the AHL, but three of February’s four Crunch victories were achieved on opponents’ ice. For instance, on Feb. 19 Syracuse scored first and refused to relinquish the lead as they notched a convincing 5-3 victory over the St. John’s IceCaps, at the Mile One Centre in Newfoundland. Adam Erne led the charge in snapping a two-game skid with a two-goal game, while Ben Thomas, Cameron Darcy and Mike Halmo contributed one each. Goalie Adam Wilcox earned the win with a 27save performance between the pipes for the Crunch, and Syracuse went 2-for-8 on the

Center Cory Conacher, 27, leads the Syracuse Crunch in scoring this season with 12 goals and 32 assists. The native of Burlington, Ont. has plenty of NHL games under his belt, having suited up for the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres, Ottawa Senators and the Crunch parent team, the Tampa Bay Lightning. power play and 4-for-7 on the penalty kill. AHL All-Star forward Matt Taormina continued as the Crunch’s leading scorer with a first-period assist, passing cleanly to Adam Comrie who powered a rocket from
the blue line for Erne to tip down low on the power play. Taormina has tallied 13 goals plus 30 assists for a total of 43 points so far this season. Forward Cory Conacher punched in two goals in an overtime loss in Toronto on
Feb. 22 to surpass Taormina with 12 goals and 32 assists for 44 total points. Left winger Yanni Gourde is the team’s top scorer with 18 goals.

The Crunch face off against the Hershey Bears at
7 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the War Memorial Arena, 800 S. State St., in downtown Syracuse. The next night, Saturday, March 4, the Binghamton Senators skate into town for a 7 p.m. game here. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25; 473-4444; syracusecrunch. com. On Sunday, March 5, the Crunch head south on Route 81 to take on the Senators again at 5:05 p.m. on their home ice at Maines Veterans Memorial Arena, in Binghamton. The Crunch return to the War Memorial to host the St. John’s IceCaps on Wednesday, March 8, before facing off against the Springfield Falcons here March 10 and the IceCaps again on March 11. All Crunch games are broadcast by ESPN Radio 97.7 FM, with play-by-play by Dan D’Uva. In Syracuse, tune to 1200 AM or 97.7 FM and northwest of the city, dial in to 1440 AM or 100.1 FM.

Under the leadership of Board Chair John Copanas; Vice Chair Jeanne Powers; and Treasurer Khristopher Dodson, supported by the full OCRRA board and staff, OCRRA will advance its mission to sustain a world class waste management system that benefits our community and environment by concentrating on four areas: 1) People, 2) Operations and Assets, 3) Community Programs, and 4) Innovation and Leadership. “Having served many years on the board of directors, I was both honored and humbled to
be selected to serve as board chair in 2017. I am proud of the dedication demonstrated by each board member who give so freely of their time and talents to guide OCRRA to world class status,” said Copanas. “Vice Chair Jeanne Powers and Treasurer Khristopher Dodson bring a depth of knowledge and experience to their officer roles which will help OCRRA continue our tradition of offering innovative programs and services to the residents of Onondaga County.” OCRRA updated its core values to include integrity and honesty; safety; environmental stewardship; fiscal responsibility; public engagement and excellence in public service. “Remaining grounded to OCRRA’s core values allows the agency to service the Onondaga County community well,” said Powers,.
“It also helps OCRRA achieve its vision of using effective and fiscally-sound strategies, including waste reduction, recycling, composting, energy recovery, disposal and public education to help make our community a more sustainable and healthy place to live.” Four objectives will guide OCRRA’s investment of its talented staff and resources: 1) Maximize reliable solid waste disposal through recycling, composting, energy recovery while minimizing landfill disposal. 2) Optimize revenue sources, control expenses through efficient operations and build reserves for future sustainable investments. 3) Strive for excellence in recycling, compost, and transfer operations and help advance smart sustainable solid waste in North America.
4) Be a good neighbor, leverage partnerships to reduce litter, and consider OCRRA’s greenhouse gas emissions in operational decisions. “OCRRA commitment to excellence in sustainable solid waste management and fiscal responsibility, being a good neighbor and working with others in our community and industry benefits our Onondaga County neighborhoods and natural resources,” said Dodson. OCRRA’s first community event of 2017 is the Earth Day Litter Cleanup happening on Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22. Gather a group of friends, coworkers or family members and volunteer to beautify our community. Register at OCRRA.org. Learn more and get involved at OCRRA. org, or follow OCRRA on Facebook.
