‘Pursuing artistic beauty and social justice’ Ola Onabule to perform at CNY Jazz Cabaret
C
ontinuing the celebration of its 20th anniversary season, CNY Jazz will introduce Syracuse audiences to the worldrenowned artistry of Ola Onabule, soul-jazz singer, songwriter, studio and record company owner, and current Nigerian UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Ambassador nominee, on Sunday, March 20, at the Sheraton Syracuse University, 801 University Ave. While in Syracuse, Onabule will also speak and per-
form at area colleges. The Nigerian-born Onabule was raised in London and studied law before committing to a career in the music profession. Since then, he has released eight studio albums and performed at major festivals across the globe. He has performed with many of Europe’s most prodigious jazz orchestras, including the WDR Orchestra in Cologne and the Danish Radio Big Band. While in Syracuse, Onabule will also appear at Syracuse University and Le Moyne College, where he will perform for

students and provide a contextual overview of his life and work. “Ola is an incredibly talented, intelligent and compassionate individual with a unique life story that is still unfolding,” said Larry Luttinger, organizer of the event. “He could have chosen a comfortable career in law, but instead chose a path pursuing artistic beauty and social justice. This path is leading him to international acclaim of the first order. Ironically, he is still relatively unknown to American audiences. I also believe that this is the very
first time that a nominee for UNESCO ambassadorship has been presented in concert in Syracuse. It’s an honor to host his short residency here, and a pleasure to put it together.” The CNY Jazz Cabarets always feature fine national talent in a club atmosphere, with cash bar and food stations available starting at 4 p.m. Music begins at 5 p.m. Admission is $30 at the door ($10 with student ID) or $25 in advance at cnyjazz.org or 479-5299. Rochester rivals By Russ Tarby
Why can’t the Syracuse Crunch beat the Rochester Amerks? In their seven meetings over the course of the 2015-16 American Hockey League season, Rochester has prevailed five times against two single-goal victories by Syracuse. This season’s total goals-scored and goals-allowed statistics show that Syracuse and Rochester are practically neck‘n’neck. At presstime, the Amerks had scored 141 goals and allowed 175, while the Crunch netted 144 and allowed 177. But when it comes to head-to-head competition between these Thruway Rivals, Syracuse has scored 21 goals while allowing the Amerks to light the lamp 27 times. In its last three games against Syracuse, Rochester scored 17 goals, as compared to 11 for the Crunch. Syracuse has a chance to improve its dismal record against Rochester at when the Crunch host the Amerks at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at the OnCenter War Memorial Arena, downtown. The Crunch is the top farm club of the NHL’s Tampa

in relief. Syracuse went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Rochester was a perfect 2-for-2.
The last time the Amerks came to town, on Feb. 20, they demolished the Crunch 6-2. Right winger Mike Blunden potted both goals for Syracuse, but the Crunch went down by four after a hat trick by Tim Schaller and a marker by Nick Baptiste. Blunden blasted back-to-back goals bringing the Crunch within two, but that was as close as the team would get, falling to the Americans for the fifth time this season. In the middle of the final frame, the Crunch pulled within two. Yanni Gourde passed to Blunden to score his second of the game from the right circle. The comeback quickly fizzled as the Americans added two more before time expired. Crunch skaters launched 53 shots on goal, but Americans netminder Linus Ullmark earned the win with a season-high 51 saves. Crunch goalie Adam Wilcox turned aside 13 of 17 shots before being chased from the game in the second. Kristers Gudlevskis went on to stop 16 of 17
The night before, the Crunch finally snapped a nine-game skid as they defeated the Utica Comets in a high-scoring affair Feb. 19 at the War Memorial. Syracuse quickly notched two power-play goals by Matt Taormina and Tye McGinn in the opening minutes. As the game continued, Jeff Tambellini found the back of the net twice and Mike Blunden added a man-advantage marker. The following weekend, on Feb. 26, the Crunch outlasted Binghamton Senators, 3-2, before being overwhelmed the next day by the St. John’s IceCaps, 5-1. With its playoff hopes dwindling as the season enters its final weeks, the Crunch picked up a thrilling come-from-behind win Feb. 28 in Binghamton. After Syracuse overcame a three-goal deficit in the third period with goals by Blunden and Joel Vermin, Tye McGinn evened the score with just nine seconds remaining to force the game into overtime. Blunden and Matthew Peca went on to

score in a five-round shootout to defeat the Binghamton Senators, 5-4, at Maines Veterans Memorial Arena. Crunch goaltender Adam Wilcox earned his sixth win, stopping 28 shots and 4-of-5 shootout opportunities. The victory brought the Crunch to 2223-9-2, and left them in sixth place in the seven-team AHL North Division. Two games this weekend The Crunch host the Bridgeport Sound Tigers – top farm club of the NHL’s New York Islanders – at 7 p.m. Friday, March 11, and the Rochester Americans – top farm team of the Buffalo Sabres – at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, both at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena, 800 S. State St., in downtown Syracuse. Ticket prices range from $16 to $24; 473-4444; syracusecrunch.com. On Sunday, March 13, Syracuse buses over to Springfield to face off at 5 p.m. against the Falcons at the Mass Mutual Center, in Springfield, Mass. All Crunch games are broadcast by ESPN Radio 97.7 FM, with play-by-play by Dan D’Uva.

Oswego Museum part of statewide discount promotion The H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego is one of 15 museums and attractions across New York State that are being promoted in the I Love NY Museum Discount this winter. The promotion is sponsored by I Love NY and ends March 31. Visitors can download a coupon and receive 15 percent off admission to a selection of museums and cultural institutions across the state. The H. Lee White Maritime Museum, located at 1 W. First St. Pier in Oswego’s maritime district, recounts more than 400 years of regional maritime history through a variety of exhibits and artifacts. Open year-round, the museum is comprised of several key sites including the main building of exhibits, a fleet of historic vessels, and a boating education center. Vessels
include the National Register of Historic Places 1927 NYS Derrick Boat, the National Historic Landmark WWII Tugboat LT-5, the last American commercial fishing vessel on Lake Ontario the Eleanor D, and the replica 19th century schooner Ontario. “The Maritime Museum’s main building is open all year to visitors telling Oswego’s story as the oldest US freshwater port in the country. Even in the winter, the views from our building looking out onto the harbor, Lake Ontario, Oswego River and the Oswego Lighthouse are spectacular. Several of our vessels can be viewed from the pier as well. It’s a great way to get out and experience maritime life first hand,” said Mercedes Niess, museum executive director. JCC Purim Carnival to be held March 20
The Penny Saver
SUDOKU
Crossword Submitted photo
The JCC’s Schayes Family Gymnasium was bustling with many family friendly activities during last year’s Purim Carnival. The Sam Pomeranz Jewish Community Center of Syracuse will once again put on a fun-filled day of games, activities, food and more during its upcoming Purim Carnival. This annual familyoriented event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 20, at the JCC on 5655 Thompson Road, DeWitt. Plenty of interactive and entertaining activities for preschool and school-age children and their families will be available. Admission is free and open to the public. “It’s always thrilling to open our doors to the community and create an afternoon that’s filled with lots of good family fun,” said Marci Erlebacher, JCC of Syracuse executive director. “Purim is one of the most lively, joy-filled holidays, and what better way to celebrate than with a carnival for our members and neighbors.” The JCC’s Purim Carnival is the center’s largest indoor community event held each year. It has become a tradition for the JCC to hold the celebration as a way of giving back to the community so that families can spend some good quality time together. Children are encouraged to dress in costumes, which is a Purim holiday custom. Kids dressed in costumes will receive a prize ticket at the door. A food drive to benefit the Temple Concord food pantry will also be held. Anyone bringing in canned or non-perishable food will receive a prize ticket for each item donated. Esther’s Café, one of the carnival’s main attractions, will open for lunch at 11:30 a.m. in the JCC’s Anne and
Hy Miller Family Auditorium. A variety of home-cooked, Va’ad-supervised gourmet kosher food by the JCC’s chef, Donna Carullo, will be available. Menu items will include corned beef and turkey sandwiches, hamburgers, hotdogs, knishes and deserts featuring the ever popular hamantashen cookie. The JCC Neulander Family Sports & Fitness Center’s Schayes Family Gymnasium will be transformed into a miniindoor midway of sorts and feature kids carnival games, large inflatable toys and bounce houses, caricature drawings, raffles and more. Other event attractions will include entertainment, a toddler/ preschool bounce house, safe ID and car seat safety checks, PJ Library activities, a used book sale and distribution of the JCC’s 2016 Camp Rishon summer camp guide. The JCC of Syracuse is fortunate to be able to put on its Purim Carnival each year thanks to help from a small “army” of volunteers. Some of the many crucial tasks volunteers will perform include running games, serving food and helping out in the prize room. For students seeking to fulfill community service requirements, volunteering is a great way to earn credit hours, help out the JCC and have some fun! Volunteer shifts are available from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 1:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about the JCC’s Purim Carnival, including volunteer opportunities and donating gently used books for the sale, contact the JCC of Syracuse at 445-2360 or visit jccsyr. org.

Chicago to perform on Labor Day at the Fair Bruce Hornsby, Survivor, Air Supply also coming to Chevy Court
One of the all-time greatest bands in rock history will help bring the 2016 Great New York State Fair to a close, as Chicago performs at 6 p.m. on Labor Day, Sept. 5, at Chevy Court, Acting Fair Director Troy Waffner recently announced. All performances by national touring groups at Chevy Court are free with admission to the Fair. Chicago’s album, “Chicago Transit Authority”, was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2014. Total record sales top the 100 million mark, an incredible 25 of the band’s 36 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has earned 47 gold and platinum awards. In April, Chicago will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This will be Chicago’s first appearance at the Fair in 26 years and its fourth appearance overall. Chicago’s appearance takes place on the Fair’s final day, Labor Day, when admission will be just $1 and all rides on the Wade Shows Midway will be $1. “We are truly excited to have performers of the stature of
Chicago here to send the 2016 Fair out on a high note. They are one of the greatest groups of all time and I know this will be a show that will make wonderful memories for everyone. And you’ll never see a group this great for less,” said Waffner. At the same time, Waffner announced several other performances that will take place at Chevy Court. They are: •Bruce Hornsby and The Noisemakers at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. Hornsby achieved fame with his band, The Range, and the hit songs “(That’s Just) The Way It Is,” “Mandolin Rain” and “The Valley Road.” He has also toured as part of The Grateful Dead and some of the legendary band’s reunion tours. This will be his first-ever appearance at the Fair. •Air Supply at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. The Australian soft rock duo struck gold starting in 1980 with “Lost in Love,” and charted seven more singles into the top five positions of the Billboard pop charts. This will mark the group’s fifth appearance at the Fair, and the first since 1995. •Herman’s Hermits return for a Senior Day performance at 2 p.m. Aug. 29. Peter Noone remains as popular as the first time he appeared at the Fair, in 1991, behind classic singles such as “Mrs. Brown, You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” and “Can’t You Hear My Heartbeat.”
•Survivor, at 2 p.m. Aug. 30. The 1980s rock outfit’s iconic song, “Eye of the Tiger” has never gone out of style. Lead vocalist Dave Bickler’s group makes its second appearance at the Fair, and its first since 2000. •Macy Gray, at 2 p.m., Aug. 31. The soul and R&B singer behind the hit “I Try” continues to record her own music and appear on collaborations with many other artists. This will be her first appearance ever at the Fair. Chevy Court’s 23 free shows are part of the Fair’s commitment to music. Each year, the Fair and its vendors provide approximately 500 free musical performances. Concerts at Chevy Court are sponsored by Chevrolet. The New York State Fair will run from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5 this year. Fair’s mission, reflected in its theme, “Summer’s Best in Show,” is to showcase the best of New York agriculture while providing top-quality entertainment. In addition to the annual New York State Fair, the Fairgrounds host dozens of agricultural events throughout the year, including some of the Northeast’s most prestigious horse and livestock shows. Breast Care Partners receives national accreditation
Collaborative of Crouse Radiology Associates, Hematology/Oncology Associates CNY Surgical Physicians, Crouse Health, St. Joseph’s Health Breast Care Partners has been granted a three-year/ full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Formed in 2014, Breast Care Partners is a diverse group of breast health specialists in Central New York, who have partnered together to ensure each patient the best possible breast care available. Members of the collaborative include Crouse Radiology Associates; St. Joseph’s Imaging; Hematology-Oncology Associates; CNY Surgical Physicians; St. Joseph’s Breast Care and Surgery; Crouse Health and St. Joseph’s Health, all of which have come together to provide a seamless, multidisciplinary program of breast care services – from initial imaging/screening all the way through surgical intervention and post-procedure support, treatment and management of disease, psychosocial and nutritional support, rehabilitation and survivorship. In addition, they are also committed to benign breast health and education in our community. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the
highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review. During the survey process, the center must demonstrate compliance with standards established by the NAPBC for treating women who are diagnosed with the full spectrum of breast disease. The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education and quality improvement. “A breast center that achieves NAPBC accreditation has demonstrated a firm commitment to offer patients every significant advantage in their battle against breast disease,” said Breast Care Partners Program Director Janet Ricciardiello, RN. NAPBC is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care and monitoring of outcomes of patients with diseases of the breast. The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated
that there would be 232,340 patients diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the United States in 2013. In addition, hundreds of thousands of women who will deal with benign breast disease this year will require medical evaluation for treatment options. Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to: Comprehensive care, including a full range of stateof-the-art services A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options Quality breast care close to home.
