W

ith the recent stories of heartbreak and loss for families across the U.S., the upcoming holidays are a great time to pause and think about what is most

important. In a time when it seems we are confronted with atrocities and disasters on a regular basis, remember Jennifer Wing that there is good in the world as well. Editor It doesn’t take a lot to make a difference for someone else. A kind word, a helping hand, even just a sympathetic ear, can help someone who is in despair, or feeling lost, to know they matter. And sometimes it is those who are closest to us that need that reassurance. Perhaps we are so close to them, seeing them every day, that we don’t realize they are suffering. As I was watching the recent tragedies unfold, I found myself reflecting on this. I’m sure families who have lost loved ones have said things that, in retrospect, they now regret. Or wished they had said things to the loved one they lost. I know that my family is aware of how much I love them, so I don’t feel that I don’t communicate that sentiment enough, in words or actions. But I feel I could work on being more positive with my loved ones, focusing on what and who matter most to me. I know, when I am having a bad day or feeling blue, I sometimes can be short with my family, and always feel badly about it after. They mean the most to me, but occasionally see me at my worst. Thank God, they love me anyways. I guess the bottom line is a cliche - life is short. Embrace what matters and the rest needs to take a back seat, especially when you are with the ones you love the most. I’m going to try to keep that in mind the next time I’m stressed from work or the car breaks down or the toilet is clogged. The holiday season will be a great time for me to practice what I preach. I’m going to try to be even more present in the conversations at various family gatherings, making sure to spend real, quality time with the ones I love. I’m going to try not to get bogged down by the trappings of the holidays – the shopping, the traffic and the whole commercialization of the season. Maybe I’ll spend more time outside, skiing, taking a walk on a sunny, but crisp winter day and, perhaps, even throwing a couple of snowballs at some unsuspecting family members and/or friends. As we all gather around our Thanksgiving tables, let’s take a look at who is sitting around the table with us. These are the people we live with. The people we live for. Remember to be thankful we have them.

learning curve Flexible seating offers students in CNY options beyond the desk ara Morrice’s fourth grade classroom at Lanigan Elementary School in the Fulton City School District isn’t lined with desks and chairs in neat rows. In fact, there are very few traditional desks in Morrice’s room. Instead, kids sit on stability balls, yoga mats, wobble stools or other different forms of seating. It’s called flexible seating, and it gives students a bigger variety of options in where they choose to work. “They’re more comfortable and actually have more space to spread out and work. They aren’t right on top of each other,” Morrice said. “I’m able to use all the space in the class much more efficiently.” Flexible seating has become especially popular in the last three or four years thanks to social media. Morrice said she learned about it through a blog post and decided to give it a try. “I was intrigued and implemented a very

loose version in the beginning of the [201617 school] year,” she said. “I was letting kids pick where they wanted to sit each day, but it was mostly just at desks. In November [2016] I took the leap to go all in.” Morrice said she — and her students — are glad she did. “The students love it and so do I,” she said. “I feel like it gives the classroom a more of a ‘home’ feel.” Those who use flexible seating say it helps students to learn. “The need of students is paramount in a flexible seating environment,” said Randy Matthews, who teaches third grade at Karl W. Saile Bear Road Elementary in North Syracuse. “They sit in an area that allows for sensory input that best fits their need, while being more relaxed and focused.” While experts generally accept that sensory stimulation improves learning, scientific research into flexible seating and the larger field of sensory integration — how the

nervous system receives messages from the senses — is lacking. A 2007 Mayo Clinic study found that college students with attention problems who traded desks for stability balls were able to focus better, and a 2014 study at Gannon University found that teachers reported “a significant decline” in the number of interruptions to instruction due to off-task behavior. (That study, however, failed to find any correlation in literacy test scores among students using alternative seating.) The science may not be there yet, but teachers who use it in their classrooms are convinced. “Since implementing our project, I have seen a definite improvement in student attention and engagement,” said Jenn MacArthur, a K-5 reading specialist at East Hill Elementary School in the West Genesee Central School District. “Sometimes a student’s need for movement interferes with his or her ability to learn. Flexible seating has provided

You feel worse, and on top of that, you are now mad at them. What you wanted to hear? “I hate when that happens. It’s frustrating when you’re trying so hard to be on time and you get stuck behind a school bus stopping at every house. “No way! Your boss is a total jerk for

embarrassing you like that, and I know how important that presentation was for you. The point here is this, nothing they can say is going to change what happened, and you already know that you need to do better next time. In this moment, their empathy and connection with you is more important. It’s what gives you the confidence and validation to try again. As opposed to a response that fills you with anger and even more disappointment in yourself. So, why am I going on and on? Because we, knowingly or not, do this to children all the time. Not because we are mean and nagging parents that want kids to feel horrible, but simply because we love our children and want them to be successful. After all, if they fail that homework assignment because they waited until the morning it was due to complete it and then forgot to put it in their folder when we told them to, they will never learn the benefit of being organized and th prepared, they will fail 5 grade, and they will never get into college or get a job. Right? I challenge you to look at it in a different

way. To ask yourself, “Is possible to have empathy while also holding my child accountable? It’s true that your child may fail that homework assignment. But that doesn’t mean they are forever doomed. We all need to learn from our choices, and making mistakes is how we learn as human beings. Some of us learn quickly and others need more reinforcement from natural consequences before it sinks in. So instead of this: “I can’t believe you failed that homework

Empathy from page 20

assignment. If you listened to me this would have never happened.” Try this: “Ouch. It hurts when we don’t get the grades we want. What can you do different next time?” I am not saying, let your child repeatedly skip on homework assignments. If schoolwork is becoming a problem a meeting with your child’s teacher may be in order. Better yet, depending on your child’s age, you can kill three birds with one stone and help your child have their own a meeting with their teacher to brainstorm solutions. In turn, teaching responsibility, communication skills, and problem solving. If your child repeatedly forgets to pack their sports equipment, and you find yourself rushing from work to bring it to them. Ask yourself, what would happen if they just showed up to practice without their equipment? Try this: “Oh no! I am so sorry you forgot your lacrosse stick. That is beyond frustrating! I am at work right now and I won’t be able to

bring it to you. Your coach probably won’t be happy. I am here for you to vent about it when you get home. And if you’d like my help to brainstorm ways to get more organized we can do that too.” Your child will probably then whine or yell at you. Or maybe not. The coach will probably make them run laps for forgetting important equipment to teach them about being a responsible member of the team. And in the end, they will have learned an important lesson about bring prepared. As parents, we have a major responsibility to make sure our children grow up to be responsible human beings. And I agree that some of this is on us. But it is also on them. Children do need our guidance and support as they are learning to navigate this world. But they also need the opportunity to learn from their mistakes. And it is possible for this to be done while having the support of the people closest to them. Was this helpful? contests Nominate ‘Mother of the Year’ American Mothers Inc. seeks women who inspire

American Mothers Inc.is seeking nominations for 2018 Mother of the Year. To qualify, a nominee should be the mother of one or more children, inspirational in her role as a mom, and exhibit an interest in her community. Nominations will need to convey what makes the woman so special via an online form at AmericanMothers.org. “Every year we are amazed by the passion the nominees have for being a mother and improving the lives of those around them,”

said Connell Branan, president of American Mothers. “It’s inspiring to see so many women who embody the selfless, caring spirit of motherhood and who are using that maternal energy to make the world a better place.” As a part of the selection process to determine the 2018 Mother of the Year, each nominee will be asked to submit narrative responses to questions about their philosophy on motherhood and the activities they are involved in, along with two letters of recommendation. 2018 Mother of the Year honorees will serve as representatives of American Mothers

in their state and highlight the importance of mothers at home, at work and in the world. They will be announced in March and recognized in April at a national conference in Washington, D.C., where the National Mother of the Year will be named. She will serve as a national ambassador on the important role mothers play in our world, while promoting important American Mothers initiatives like the National Fifth Grade Essay Contest, the Golden Rule Movement, and the Golden Rule Grant program. Nominations must be received by Nov. 15 at americanmothers.org.

movement in a safe and structured learning environment and helps students stay engaged in intervention groups.” MacArthur’s students said the stools “help me think a lot better,” “help me calm down,” “help me pay attention” and “helps me relax and think better… when I am stuck on a problem.”

SYRACUSE PARENT NOVEMBER 2017

“Students are empowered to have input on how they learn best while demonstrating self-control with parameters around seating,” MacArthur said. While the term “flexible seating” is fairly new, the concept has been around for a long time. Occupational therapists have used alternative seating with special needs students for two decades, and plenty of teachers have employed different methods of seating without using the term.

Katelyn Cleveland, who uses stability balls, wobble stools, scoop chairs, a rug, beanbag chairs, a big pillow and a small couch in her kindergarten classroom in the Syracuse City School District, said though the concept is now popular, it’s been around for a while. “Some teachers in my building have been using flexible seating techniques for many years without the title of ‘flexible seating’ to describe it,” she said.
