CNY Veterans Parade, Expo set for Saturday ‘Women in the Military: Past, Present and Future’ to be theme
A
simple “thank you” is not strong enough to convey the gratitude that the men and women who served in the military deserve. The 10th Annual CNY Veterans Parade and Expo is being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the NYS Fairgrounds. The purpose of the event is to honor our veterans with a parade and offer them information and entertainment at the expo. The event is being on Nov. 4, a week before Veterans Day, so local municipalities and veterans’ organizations could hold their traditional ceremonies and celebrations. While the CNY Veterans Parade and Expo honors all who served, “Women in the Military: Past, Present and Future” is the theme of this year’s event. A photographic exhibit of Women Air Service Pilots from the National WASP WWII Museum will be featured at the Expo. Women with pilots licenses were called upon to allow male pilots to fly for combat during WWII. The WASPs were sent to Avenger Field in Texas and, for many, it was their first time away from home. They were trained, maintained military standards and observed military regulations, but were still deemed civil service. This set the path for future female pilots in the military. Three local women were selected to be grand marshals, represubmitted photo senting service from the past, currently and in the future. Grand marshals, from left, are First Lieutenant Phyllis Mills Creamer, Chief Master Sergeant Sonja Antoinette CNY Veterans l Page B11 Williams and MIDN 1/C Precious Siddiquee.

Syracuse Silver Knights soccer to play home opener on Nov. 10 Veteran forward Patrick Thompson returns By Emma Henzes
Submitted photo
The Silver Knights continue to bolster this season’s squad as Patrick Thompson returns to Central New York.
On Nov. 10 The Syracuse Silver Knights will take on the Ontario Fury at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena during its home opener. Syracuse opens its season on the road against the Turlock Express on Nov. 3. The Silver Knights continue to bolster this season’s squad as Patrick Thompson returns to Central New York. “Patrick is a dynamic player
who brings speed, a great left foot and experience to our team,” said Silver Knights General Manager Tommy Tanner. “I am excited to see him have an opportunity this year to score a lot of goals for us.” Thompson played in 19 games last year, finishing the 2016-2017 season with four goals and three assists. “I am looking forward to returning for my second season after getting accustomed to the team last year. With Ryan [Hall] being the head coach, we can pick up right where we left off,” Thompson said. “I hope we can put all the pieces of the puzzle together.”
Thompson has previously played for the Pennsylvania Roar of the old Major Indoor Soccer League before playing two seasons for the Harrisburg Heat of the Major Arena Soccer League. Before coming to Syracuse, Thompson always loved playing at the Oncenter War Memorial Arena. “Away games at Syracuse were always one of my favorite trips,” he said. “Getting to play in the arena in front of the Syracuse fans was always a pleasure.” For tickets to every Silver Knights home game, call 315-3037261.

Diane Zeni deFerrante, MD, joins Crouse Health Palliative Care Team
Diane Zeni deFerrante, MD, has joined the palliative medicine team at Crouse
Health. Most recently, deFerrante split her time between
Cortland Regional Medical Center, where she practiced inpatient palliative medicine
and geriatric medicine, and Hospicare of Cortland County where she was associate medical director. Prior to relocating to Central New York two years ago, deFerrante spent her entire career working for Kaiser Permanente in Southern California. There, she practiced as a family physician and hospitalist before finding her passion practicing hospice and palliative medicine. She served many years as medical director for Kaiser Permanente’s home-based hospice and pal-
liative medicine program. Shereceived her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and completed her family medicine residency at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center in California. She is board certified in family medicine and hospice and palliative medicine. “We are pleased to add a physician of Dr. deFerrante’s caliber to Crouse’s palliative medicine program,” says Mindy McMinn, MD, medical director of the program, which
Diane Zeni deFerrante in 2016 provided care and comfort to more than1,680 patients and their families at Crouse Hospital.
Free breast screening patient navigator program helps women access care Breast Care Partners, LLC (BCP), a nationally accredited breast center, recently announced that Leesa Kelley has joined its program in the role of breast screening patient navigator. This new position is a key element of recent funding BCP received to expand services for underserved women, regardless of their insurance status, to navigate the healthcare system to complete breast cancer screenings. The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
(NAPBC) Patient Navigation Project is one of a number of programs that are part of New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s statewide initiative to increase breast cancer screening by 10 percent over the next five years. For questions and concerns about scheduling mammograms, Kelley is directly available to women of all ages and medical providers by phone or text at (315) 3133160. Messages left are confidential. The NAPBC Patient Navigation project began in October 2016 with the goals of: 1. Increasing the number of women screened for breast cancer 2. Improving the quality of breast cancer screening and diagnostic follow up by enhancing existing patient navigation services. The project is being implemented with support from Health Research Inc. and the New York State Department of Health. “The breast screening patient navigator is available at no charge to women or medical providers to help: secure convenient screening appointments; navigate the system of securing insurance to cover screening costs; understand the process of receiving a screening mammogram to alleviate fears; secure transportation to appointments, and more,” said Janet Ricciardiello, RN, BCP program director. “We’re making it easier for women to take advantage of this important cancer screening.” Ricciardiello added that the best protection against breast cancer is early detection and diagnosis. Annual mammograms can detect cancer early — when it is most treatable – often preventing the need for extensive treatment for advanced cancers and improving chances of breast conservation. According to the American College of Radiology, mammography has helped reduce breast cancer mortality in the U.S. by nearly 40 percent since 1990. Breast cancer is the most common
Leesa Kelley cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women in New York and Onondaga County. Kelley joins Breast Care Partners with many years of local healthcare community relations and marketing experience. She most recently served as community health outreach manger for Crouse Hospital, where she worked to address healthcare needs of underserved and underinsured individuals in Onondaga County.
About Breast Care Partners
Formed in 2014, BCP is a diverse group of breast health specialists in Central New York, who have partnered together to ensure each patient the best possible breast care available. Members of the collaborative include Crouse Radiology Associates; St. Joseph’s Imaging Associates; Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY; CNY Surgical Physicians; St. Joseph’s Breast Care and Surgery; Crouse Health and St. Joseph’s Health, all of which have come together to provide a seamless, multidisciplinary program of breast care services – from initial imaging/screening all the way through surgical intervention and post-procedure support, treatment and management of disease, psychosocial and nutritional support, rehabilitation and survivorship. BCP also is committed to overall breast healthcare and education in the community. In 2015, the program received three-year, full accreditation designation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons.

Oswego Health offering free pre-diabetes program By Marion Ciciarelli
Oswego Health is offering a free diabetes prevention program, Prevent T2 Diabetes, to assist community members who are pre-diabetic. Community members who have pre-diabetes are encouraged to enroll and learn how to make important life style changes to improve their health status. This evidence-based, year-long program starts Nov. 8 at Springside at Seneca Hill, County Route 45A. Classes will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays. For the first six months, classes will be held weekly. After the initial six months, classes will be once or twice a month. To register, call Oswego Health Community Health Department at 315-349-5513. This program curriculum was developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Participants learn how to eat healthy, add physical activity to their routine, manage stress, stay motivated, and solve problems that can get in the way of healthy changes. The program’s group setting provides a supportive environment with people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes. Together participants celebrate their successes and find ways
to overcome obstacles. Teaching the class will be Oswego Health’s Certified Diabetes Educator Susan Callaway, RN, and Sarah Wansink, a licensed practical nurse. Participants will learn the skills they need to make lasting changes such as losing a modest amount of weight, being more physically active and managing stress. People with pre-diabetes — higher-than-normal blood glucose (sugar) levels are five to 15 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those with normal blood glucose levels. In fact, many individuals with pre-diabetes can be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes within five years. “One in three American adults has pre-diabetes, so the need for prevention has never been greater,” said Oswego Health Director of Community Health Programs Brenda LaMay, NP. “The PreventT2 program offers a proven approach to preventing or delaying the onset of type 2 diabetes through modest lifestyle changes made with the support of a coach and one’s peers.”

Mountain Division, the 174th Attack Wing, Oswego Coast Guard, and Marines from Echo Company 4th LAR Battalion are among the participants. Every branch of the armed services and every conflict since and including WWII are represented. The expo features displays with a special emphasis on military history and local companies and organizations that serve veterans. Last year more than 90 organizations took part and there will be a large children’s area with magicians, activities and games. Proceeds from the Breakfast for the Brave will go to Clear Path for Veterans. Tickets are available online. There will be numerous opportunities throughout the day to personally interact with veterans and military members and to learn more about local and national history. Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli reinvigorated the CNY Veterans Parade in 2008. His hope was to create the type of military-style parades that he recalled watching as a child along Salina Street. This effort gained a strong following from the Central New York
business and military community and continued to grow in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, the parade was moved to the New York State Fairgrounds to accommodate its growth and to provide the community with additional events which comprise the Expo. The CNY Veterans Parade, a registered 501c3 organization, operates on a minimal budget supported solely by donations and sponsorships. The event is made possible because of support from locally-based companies and organizations including: SRC, Lockheed, Anaren, Welch Allyn, Anheuser Busch, Excellus, Nucor, and numerous other companies to thank and recognize veterans in the community. Admission and parking at is free. Handicap parking is located in front of the main gates. For more information about the CNY Veterans Parade and Expo, visit CNYVeteransParade.org, or Facebook.com/CNYVeteransParade or email cnyveteransparadeandexpo@ yahoo.com.

WCNY to host premiere party for ‘The 46ers’ film
WCNY, Central New York’s flagship public broadcaster invites the community to a Premiere Party for “The 46ers,” a film capturing the imagination and inspiration of those who make scaling the 46 Adirondack Mountain High Peaks in northern New York State a life-changing experience in their lives. The event takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 8 at the WCNY Studios, 415 W. Fayette St. in Syracuse.
From 5–5:30 p.m. light hors d’oeuvres will be served; from 5:30–6 p.m. there will be a Q&A and Meet the Producers and from 6–7 p.m. “The 46ers” premiere will be shown. Tickets are $20 for WCNY members and $25 for non-members and are available at wcny. org/events. R.S.V.P. by Nov. 5 required. Limited seating. About “The 46ers” “The 46ers” is a feature film that captures
the imagination and inspiration of those who make scaling the 46 Adirondack Mountain High Peaks in northern New York State a lifechanging experience in their lives. The film provides an introduction to the men and women of the Adirondack 46ers Club, a group that supports the hiking of the high peaks in summer and winter. As spectacular as the vistas are as seen atop 19 of the High Peaks including Cascasde and Porter, so
are the moving stories of individuals who set out to move through the mountains at paces that range from intense to gentle. The result: memories and stories that last a lifetime. What draws these people? It is not all beautiful views and comfortable conditions, because climbing these mountains is tough. The journey can be treacherous, even life threatening; yet these individuals persevere.
March for Babies to be held Nov. 12 at SRC Arena
On Sunday, Nov. 12, join thousands of families and local business leaders at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena in Syracuse for the 2017 March for Babies, the nation’s oldest fundraising walk, which helps more babies survive and thrive. Right
here in Syracuse, babies are struggling because they were born prematurely or with birth defects. The March of Dimes works in communities across the country to help give every baby a fighting chance. March for Babies, the March of Dimes’ signature fund-
raiser and the nation’s favorite walking event, helps prevent birth defects, premature birth, and other leading causes of infant death and disability. March for Babies will take place in nearly 500 communities nationwide, including here in Syracuse. Onsite registration will
begin at 10 a.m. with the three-mile walk (inside or outside) kicking off at 11 a.m. Community residents can sign up today at marchforbabies.org to start a team with co-workers, family, or friends; or make a donation to help more babies get a healthy start in life.

By Donna Newman ell, hello, Dolly! You’re looking swell, Dolly. It’ll be so nice, to have you back where you belong – in a loving home! Dolly is a kitty of some mystery; she came to us as a stray, so we don’t know much about her. What we do know, we like; she’s sweet, pretty and wants to be loved. Come visit Dolly for yourself and see what a special girl she is. For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315454-4479.
