‘Bright Friday’ is coming Dickens Christmas opens Nov. 24
W
eekends between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the lakeside village of Skaneateles takes its cue from Dickensian England, as “A Christmas Carol” comes to life, enchanting holiday shoppers. The year is 1842, and Queen Victoria has arrived in town accompanied by Charles Dickens, whom she has commissioned to write a Christmas story. To mark the occasion, Mayor Fezziwig and his wife are planning “a celebration like no other, with joyful noise each day at the Midday Revels,” as Mrs. Fezziwig leads the town in caroling. During their month-long stay, Dickens is inspired by a bevy of now-familiar characters, including Scrooge, the Cratchits, Tiny Tim, the Fezziwigs, the Spirit of Christmas Past and the Ghost of Jacob Marley, along with finishing school girls, pickpockets and other villagers. The story unfolds each week, as Dickens and his en-
tourage interact with cast members and passersby. “The real magic of our little Christmas party is the human connection we make when we look each other in the eye and wish each other well,” said producing director Jim Greene. Dickens Christmas draws more than 20,000 visitors each year. It is produced by Scarlett Rat Entertainment and presented by Stifel Investment Services, the Skaneateles Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Skaneateles-area business community. The production opens the Friday after Thanksgiving and runs noon to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday through Dec. 23, with a limited show (noon to 2:30 p.m.) Dec. 24. Highlights of this year’s season include: ★ World’s Smallest Christmas Parade. Nov. 24, starting at noon at the Skaneateles Village Hall on Fennell Street, proceeding east to

Ed Clute to perform Sunday, Nov. 19 Blind stride pianist will dazzle Uriah’s audience
O
By Russ Tarby
ver the past year, Ed Clute – the hard-swinging stride pianist from Watkins Glen – has returned to his Dixieland roots by sitting in with New York City tradjazz sensation, the Hot Sardines, first at the Clemens Center in Elmira and then at the Lewiston Jazz Festival outside Buffalo where he received a standing ovation. This month Clute reunites his own classic jazz combo to play a concert hosted by the Jazz Appreciation Society of Syracuse from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Uriah’s restaurant, in Liverpool. Admission costs $12 for JASS
members, and $15 for others; jasscny. org; 315-652-0547. Uriah’s is located at 7990 Oswego Road (Route 57), just north of Liverpool; 315-622-2250; uriahsplace.com. Ed Clute’s Dixieland Band also features clarinetist Brian Earle, trombonist John Travis, trumpeter Bob Cowle, bassist Charlie Hawthorne and drummer Brad Chamberlain. The band’s audience on Nov. 19 can expect to hear some of Clute’s favorite tunes such as “Avalon,” “Sweet Sue,” “In the Mood,” “Lady Be Good” and “After You’ve Gone.” Sightless since birth, Ed has worked steadily as a solo pianist and sideman for more than 50 years. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Ed combines his classical training with his love of ragtime and swing. He displays a nimble-fingered virtuosity and a keen ear for harmony and has an
abiding love for popular piano styles which allow him to create lush, distinctive arrangements. Since the 1970s he has played at the Finger Lakes Jazz Festival in Hector and the Suncoast Jazz Classic in Clearwater, Fla., where he was featured both as a soloist and as a member of the Red Garter Jazz Band. In 1978, Ed sat in with San Francisco trombonist and bandleader Turk Murphy at the Corning Glass Center in 1978. “I remember, we played ‘Sweet Georgia Brown,’” Ed remembered, “and we did it at a fairly slow tempo, not rip-roaring fast like I do sometimes.” Then, in 1980, he sat in with the King of Swing himself, Benny Goodman. By the way, Clute has a new disc out, A Summer Night’s Magic on Rivermont Records. The recording showcases two dozen pop ballads from the 1920s, ’30s
and ’40s including familiar tunes such as “Deep Purple” and “Moonlight Serenade,” and more obscure numbers like “A Tree Was a Tree” and “Out of the Dawn.” All 22 tracks are solo piano pieces performed in Clute’s carefree style on his treasured 7-foot Mason & Hamlin piano. “Rivermont Records president Bryan Wright picked some of the tunes we recorded like ‘Garden in the Rain’ and ‘Oh, But I Do’, but I picked most of them,” said Ed, a man who owns a vast record collection having saved 78s from his childhood. “I’m really knowledgeable about old recordings,” he said. Three of the tunes Ed chose are “Over the Rainbow,” “Stars Fell on Alabama” and “Just Friends.” To purchase a copy of the new disc, visit Rivermontrecords.com.

Hundreds attend Go Red For Women Luncheon More than 600 local women and men showed that “Life is Why” we unite to fight heart disease at last month’s Go Red For Women Luncheon, held at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse. The year-round Go Red movement raised $370,000. Those funds will be used to fight disability and death caused by cardiovascular diseases and stroke through research, training, advocacy and community education. Heart disease is not just a man’s disease. It is the number one killer of women. One in three women dies of heart disease and stroke. The chairperson of the 2017 Go Red For Women Luncheon, Meg O’Connell, executive director of the Allyn Foundation, has spent the last year helping to raise awareness and funds in the fight against women’s greatest health threat. “The community support and awareness of Go Red For Women is amazing to me,” said O’Connell. “I’m proud to Go Red and be part of the movement to unite against heart disease and stroke. Togeth-
er, we have the power to prevent these deadly diseases.” The program also included heart disease survivor Jean Phillips. Jean had a quadruple bypass about one year ago. Her friend knew something was wrong and encouraged Jean to go to the doctor, saying she “wouldn’t take no for an answer.” Jean had surgery about a week later. The morning’s keynote speaker was Dr. Suzie Mookherjee, a CNY native who now works at Albany Medical Center as an assistant professor of medicine in the division of cardiology. Mookherjee spoke about authenticity and uniting to help each other be the best versions of ourselves. Before the luncheon program, the Festival of Red offered several opportunities for attendees. Women could get moving with the popular Silent Disco, visit the Tribute Wall, get a flu shot, see Red Dress Fashion provided by Macy’s, visit the “50 Shades of Red” lip color demonstration, have fun with social media at the Selfie Station, and learn important heart health information.
submitted photo
Passion Speaker Jean Phillips shares her story with attendees. Amy Robbins, of 93Q, and Lisa Spitz, of CNY Central, served as the emcees. They, and other speakers, shared lifesaving information about women’s health, and the impact the Go Red For Women movement is making. Go Red For Women is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and
CVS Health, and locally sponsored by Loretto; Farone & Son Funeral Home; Kinney Drugs Foundation; Stickley, Audi & Co.; Wegmans; Auburn Community Hospital; Bristol-Myers Squibb; Cardiovascular Group of Syracuse; St. Joseph’s Health; and media sponsors 93Q; CNY Central; Syracuse Woman Maga-
zine; and Eagle Newspapers, with special gratitude to the Allyn Foundation for its support of Go Red For Women. To learn more about Go Red For Women visit GoRedForWomen.org.
Irish musician to perform Nov. 16 at Kitty Hoynes Irish Accordion master and music producer Sharon Shannon will perform on Thursday, Nov. 16, at Kitty Hoynes, 301 W. Fayette St., Syracuse. “Sacred Earth” is her first new studio album in three years and her 10th studio
album to date. Best known for her arrangements of traditional Irish tunes and Irishinfluenced compositions, she’s also always been eager to explore new styles. There are Irish influences here, of course, but these are cheerfully mixed in
with often-unexpected styles from around the world, including for the first time, Africa; Sharon has perfectly mastered an African/Irish crossover. But Sacred Earth is more than this: it contains multiple musical elements from the around the world
along with the Shetland fiddle tradition, hip hop, country and blues that all combine to make this album a ground-breaker in many ways. For tickets and more information visit sharonshannon.com.

By Donna Newman It’s Adopt a Senior Month, and our resident senior is Coby. Coby is an eight-year-old Catahoula mix who came to the shelter in November of 2017. While not classically handsome, Coby has a smile that lights up a room and personality to match. Coby is an active senior who loves treats and going for walks. He’s very smart and can sit, lie down and roll over on command – especially when a treat’s involved! But most of all, Coby loves people. The chaos of small children is too much for him, so he would do best as the only dog in an adult home. Come meet Coby for yourself and see what a special guy he is! For more information about adoption, visit cnyspca.org or call 315-454-4479.

the water that it mixes with in the radiator from freezing or boiling. Coolant is nearly as important as motor oil in vehicle maintenance. Coolant is typically comprised of a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze. These two substances work together to maintain a proper ratio of heat energy and prevent eventual breakdown and destruction of the engine. Coolant is usually changed once per year or at 30,000 miles. *Additional $1,000 off for returning lease customers. Retail purchase only/ Print a $500 Trade-In Voucher online at LongleyDodge.com. ne of the ways to keep vehicles running strong for years on end is to adhere to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Although there are many factors drivers cannot control, including recalls, weather and road conditions, proper maintenance is something drivers can control, and maintaining a vehicle can be very simple.
Oil changes
Motor oil lubricates the engine and keeps it in good working order. Old oil becomes more viscous and can lose its efficacy. While changing motor oil is important, motorists should follow the owner’s manual or the factory maintenance schedule regarding $how $ often it needs to be changed, as all vehicles are not alike. The old myth that cars and trucks need oil changes at set intervals has changed as digital check capabilities have evolved. Car computers can now keep track of more than just mileage. Computers now track starts and stops and trip durations $ to determine when cars need oil changes.

Pioneer Search and Rescue Team hosts pancake breakfast
The Oswego County Pioneer Search and Rescue Team will hold a pancake breakfast with all the fixings from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, Nov. 19, at the Lake City Masonic Lodge, 765 E. Seneca St., Oswego. The event is the team’s major fundraiser. Tickets are $8 for adults; $5 for
children ages six to 16; and free for kids age five and under. Formed 46 years ago, the Oswego County Pioneer Search and Rescue Team was the first civilian search and rescue team in New York state. The team participates in searches for missing persons across the state. Members complete more the 100 hours of initial
training, followed by continuing education and team training. The team works closely with NYS DEC Forest Rangers, NYS Police and local law enforcement. All members are certified Project Lifesaver operators. “We appreciate the support of Lake City Lodge No. 127 in helping us raise funds to support our training
and equipment needs,” said team director Aaron Albrecht. Copies of local author Jim Farfaglia’s book, “Pioneers: The Story of Oswego County’s Search and Rescue Team,” will be available for purchase at the breakfast. For more information visit facebook.com/OCPSAR or oswegosar.org.

Taking steps to prevent premature births Crouse Health awarded $250k grant
Each year, more than 1,000 premature and critically ill infants are cared for in Crouse’s Baker Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the region’s highest level NICU as designated by the New York State Department of Health. To help prevent pre-term birth, Crouse has been awarded a $250,000 grant from the Central New York Care Collaborative (CNYCC), to develop strategies for hospitals and physicians in CNYCC’s program area to increase the use of proven effective actions to prevent pre-term birth in
Onondaga and several surrounding counties. The project will begin with a survey of the eight regional birthing hospitals and all providers in the region to gather information on how they currently care for women who may not be able to carry their baby to 37 weeks, the “normal” gestation time. A baby born before 37 weeks is considered a pre-term birth. Based on survey results, Crouse will develop and share educational materials on best practices for use by providers. Education materials will be uploaded to a website and discussed at one-on-one meetings, webinars and community forums.
As the initiative progresses, Crouse will solicit feedback from participating physicians to determine if project interventions have had an effect on the number of babies born prematurely. According to Joan Dadey, Crouse’s director of women and infant services, the hospital will work on the initiative with Upstate Medical University OB/GYNs, Crouse’s partner in working with pregnant patients for over 40 years. “Crouse and Upstate have had a unique partnership to provide services as the Regional Perinatal Center (RPC). Crouse is the clinical site of the RPC and provides the expertise required by the most acutely sick or at-risk pregnant women and new-
borns, while Upstate houses the outpatient program,” said Dadey. The RPC is responsible for support, education, consultation and improvements in the quality of care for pregnant women and their babies in the 18 hospitals that make up the RPC region, which stretches north to St. Lawrence County and south to Broome and Tioga counties. “This long-time collaboration makes Crouse and Upstate Medical University OB/GYNs highly qualified to begin this new program and, over time, we look forward to reducing the number of preterm births in the region,” said Robert Silverman, MD, chief of Crouse’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Safe pharmaceutical disposal program now available throughout Onondaga County Citizens Campaign for the Environment (CCE) and the Sharps, Needle and Drug Disposal (SNADD) program of Onondaga County are working with police departments to expand safe disposal of pharmaceutical drugs options in Onondaga County. Unwanted or expired pharmaceutical drugs that are flushed pollute our drinking water resources, and drugs left in medicine cabinets contribute to the drug abuse epidemic and accidental poisonings. To stop the unnecessary flushing of drugs and reduce drug abuse, residents are being provided with free and convenient disposal options at local police departments. Since the program launched in 2015, a record total of over 1.5 tons, or 3,500 pounds, of unused and expired medications and over 1,000 pounds of needles/sharps have been collected and properly disposed of. This successful safe pharmaceutical disposal program has now been expanded to include a total of 12 drop boxes at police departments and college campus security offices throughout
Dickens
l
Onondaga County. “Safely disposing of one and a half tons of unwanted medications is an amazing accomplishment. These results demonstrate that when residents are provided with free, convenient disposal options, they will use them. With more disposal options now available, and expanded public outreach to let residents know about the program, we expect even greater results in the future,” said Hanna Ring, CNY program coordinator for Citizens Campaign for the Environment. “Safe pharmaceutical disposal benefits public health and our environment. This program will protect our valuable water resources as well as prevent misuse or abuse of unused medications.” Studies have shown that pharmaceutical pollution in our waters negatively impacts aquatic life, and raises concerns about potential impacts on human health. Unused medications lingering in homes create public health and safety concerns due to the potential for drugs to be stolen,
misused, and abused. The need for safe pharmaceutical disposal programs is greater now more than ever with the opioid related death rate in Onondaga County among the highest in the State, second only to New York City. “We are thrilled with the success of the program,” said Gail Banach, director of the SNADD Program.“With limited marketing efforts to date, we have disposed of over 1,500 pounds of medication since program inception and over 1,000 pounds of sharps in 2016 alone. Reducing the accessibility and availability to these drugs in our home, we reduce the risk of drug abuse and misuse in our communities.” To assist the public with easily and conveniently identifying the location nearest them, Citizens Campaign for the Environment has launched an interactive map of all safe pharmaceutical drop box locations in Onondaga County. The map can be found at citizenscampaign.org/ campaign/pharmaceutical-disposal.asp.
